This chapter presents profiles on the delegation and pooling of authority in five international organizations (IOs) in the Asia-Pacific. Each profile explains how the coding scheme is applied to the IO by charting a path from the primary and secondary evidence to scoring judgments. They tell the reader how the assembly, executive, secretariat, consultative body, and dispute settlement of each IO are composed, what decisions each body makes, and how they make decisions. The profiles chart these developments annually since 1950. The authors indicate four kinds of uncertainty in superscript: α‎ for thin information; β‎ for a case that falls between the intervals on a dimension; γ‎ for disagreement among sources; δ‎ for inconsistency between written rules in the IO. Each profile is followed by tables summarizing the authors’ observations. Data and codebooks for the Measure of International Authority (MIA) are available on the authors’ websites.

Figurines of the Indus Civilization (c.2600–1900 BC) provide unique insights into technological, social, and ideological aspects of this early urban society. The Indus script has not yet been deciphered, so figurines provide one of the most direct means to understand social diversity through ornament and dress styles, gender depictions, and various ritual traditions. This chapter focuses on figurines from the site of Harappa, Pakistan, with comparative examples from other sites excavated in both India and Pakistan. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic terracotta figurines, and special forms with moveable components or representing composite or fantastic creatures, are found at most sites of the Indus Civilization, with rare examples of figurines made of bronze, stone, faience, or shell. The raw materials and technologies used to make figurines are discussed, along with the archaeological contexts in which they have been discovered. These figurines provide an important line of evidence regarding Indus society and religion.

An Endangered History is an account of the little-studied region of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of British-governed Bengal from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. The CHT lie on the crossroads of India, east Bengal (now Bangladesh), and Burma (contemporary Myanmar). An area of lush rivers and fertile valleys, it has historically been celebrated for its haunting natural beauty and religious heterodoxy, from the chronicles of Mughal governors to the ethno-histories of colonial British administrators. The region is composed of several indigenous or ‘tribal’ communities, whose transcultural histories defied colonial and later postcolonial taxonomies of identity and difference. In particular, this book focuses on how British administrators used European knowledge systems—botany, natural history, gender and sexuality, demography and anthropology—to construct the autochthone groups of the CHT and their landscapes. In the process, British administrators and later South Asian nationalists would misunderstand and falsely classify the region through the reifying language of religion, linguistics, race, and, most perniciously, nation, in part due to its unique, and at times perilous, location on the invisible fault lines between South and Southeast Asia. In this manner, this book argues that the colonial archive serves not only to exhume a long-forgotten regional past but also to illuminate a dynamic interconnected global history. It hopes to re-establish the vital place of this much marginalized border region within the larger study of colonial South Asia and Indian nationalism.

This article surveys taxation in the Hellenistic kingdoms of Asia Minor in the Near East, focusing on the Seleukid Empire and the Attalids of Pergamon. It argues that the study of Hellenistic systems and habits of taxation can tell us much about the distribution of sovereignty in these composite, multiscalar kingdoms. The negotiation of fiscal rights and privileges in these kingdoms drew cities, kings, courtiers, priests, and soldiers into frequent, even ritualized interactions. The article discusses taxation’s role in the competition over territory and resources, both interstate and internal, while also highlighting the role of taxation in the articulation of each state’s sovereignty claims on communities and individuals. Key sources are reviewed, both epigraphic and archaeological, including cuneiform documents from Hellenistic Babylonia and Greek inscriptions from Asia Minor (Anatolia) and Coele-Syria (Levant).

Acesta este un ghid practic. Asa cum o spune definiția termenului, „practic” trebuie sa insemne ceva care se intemeiaza pe „simțul realitații” iar „realitate” inseamna aici testul la examenul de Bacalaureat. Exista pe piața acestor produse didactice doua direcții de indepartare de realitate. Prima, cea mai la indemana, este excesul de teorie, fara finalitați aplicative precise. Ghidurile de felul acesta, in cel mai bun caz, expliciteaza teoria din manual. Dar ele nu ajuta efectiv candidatul, ci doar ii dubleaza efortul de invațare. La sfarsitul lor, acesta se regaseste la fel de timid, de neajutorat, cum era la inceput, nestiind CUM sa faca ceea ce i se cere sa faca. A doua indepartare de realitatea de pe teren a examenului este ghidul cu multe teste, dar cu indicații de soluții la fel de sumare, precum cele intalnite in baremurile de evaluare de la subiectele examenelor naționale. Nici acestea nu ajuta prea mult, neavand un rol calauzitor-corector. Daca a gresit, candidatul nu ințelege unde a gresit; daca a raspuns corect, nu stie de ce a fost corect! Asadar, era necesara cea de-a treia cale: de la ce se cere la ce trebuie sa stiu pentru a rezolva. Motiv pentru care am recurs la teorie numai din necesitați minimale, conducand-o de fiecare data spre finalitați practice: rezolvarea testului. Nu am vizat teoria ca teorie, ci teoria ca o cale spre aplicație. Mai mult, am prezentat teoria in modalitați aplicative.

Tristetea exista pentru a ne ajuta sa savuram bucuria prin contrast. Este o stare in care ne lasam sa alunecam sau nu. Depresia este sora mai mare a tristetii. Mai mare si mai imperativa. O sora dependenta care se agata de noi ca un parazit si ne consuma energia. Depresia ne doare, apoi ne amorteste si apoi iar ne doare. Depresia produce o bucla, temporala si spatiala, in care ne cuprinde si ne impresoara. Ne inchide ferestrele si usile si orice alta cale de evadare. Dar exista inca in noi germenii sperantei. Pe aceia nu ni-i poate ucide complet. Nu ne poate anula forta de a supravietui. Depresia este o stare... o stare de adanca scufundare... o stare care ne pune la incercare. Este ca o lectie, grea, dureroasa, dar dupa care invatam ca putem sa traim bine, sa fim multumiti cu ceea ce suntem si ca suntem. Depresia este o tristete nebuna si acaparatoare, dar noi, si mai nebuni, ne desfacem de ea si o privim de sus, o lasam sa se indeparteze si sa dispara cu desavarsire. Putem sa facem asta, avem resursele necesare, trebuie doar sa le gasim in noi.

By examining the creative and interactive processes that take place between members of the Kronos Quartet and musicians from non-Western traditions, the research discussed in this chapter extends beyond the standard conventions of the classical string quartet repertoire to embrace unusual and unpredictable combinations of notation and improvisation. Examples of Kronos rehearsing with singers and instrumentalists from Central Asia, and with Ukrainian vocalist Mariana Sadovska, illustrate how conventional Western constructions of composer and performer become blurred when musicians work together across cultural boundaries. The chapter uses rehearsal and interview data to address questions regarding roles and responsibilities, the distribution of creativity in rehearsal, and the way composition, performance and improvisation are defined and re-defined in this context.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Dawānī (d. 908/1502), a distinguished scholar of Shiraz in the late fifteenth century, composed many works in logic, theology, philosophy, and ethics. Moreover, he had several written and oral disputes with another outstanding scholar of Shiraz, Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Dashtakī (d. 903/1498). These heated debates, which stretched over a period of more than two decades, significantly influenced Dawānī’s and his intellectual competitor’s thought. It also became widely disputed for centuries throughout the Islamic world—in Iran, the Ottoman lands, central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. The controversy between Dawānī and Dashtakī animates a number of their respective writings, especially their glosses on ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn al-Qūshjī’s commentary on Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī’s Tajrīd al-iʿtiqād. This chapter focuses on major metaphysical disputes presented in these glosses.

This chapter examines the contested meanings of territoriality in decolonizing South Asia, building on recent scholarship on nationalist thought. It argues that when independence came, bringing with it the Partition of Punjab and Bengal, the spatial basis of the Indian and Pakistani nation-states was hardly stable. As the British colonial government prepared to withdraw, nationalists put forward competing visions of what independence could bring. Many of these visions had a difficult relationship with the idea of a national territory. The Indian National Congress sought a composite Indian national identity to hold together a vast and diverse region, while the Muslim League proposed a new entity called ‘Pakistan’, but with little clarity regarding the state’s location, extent or constitutional relationship to India. These territorial uncertainties provided the political context in which the Indus waters dispute became a matter of state sovereignty after independence.

People everywhere engage in social and solidarity economics to help themselves, community, and society on their own terms. Through a specific form of mutual aid, we examine the people who conscientiously organize financial cooperatives known as rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs) to bring positive changes to their own lives as well as others. ROSCAs are an ancient practice which are well documented, especially among Global Majority people. This book spotlights people in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Asia who organize and use ROSCAs, commoning and similar cooperative systems, which are made up of voluntary members who cooperatively make regular contributions to a fund that is given in whole or in part to each member in turn. These collective money structures vary greatly across countries in the Global South, composed of ordinary people belonging to similar class origins. People who take up these systems decide on the rules jointly and in the interests of the collective, the members. The book is organized into case studies, and each case engages with J. K. Gibson-Graham’s community economies theory, as well as drawing on local theories and ideas to recognize distinct cultural contexts. This edited collection is the first of its kind organized by scholars concerned about empirical research, and mostly written by Global Majority scholars and activists to write stories using community economies theories about how people, no matter where they live, do their part to make business inclusive.

Transforming India into a digital state has been an objective of successive governments in India. However, the digital, by its very nature, is a capricious, multi-dimensional entity. Its operationalization across multiple sectors in India has highlighted the fact that the digital compact with publics in India is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, devices such as mobile phones have enabled access and efficiencies, and on the other, they have increased the scope for surveillance capitalism and the expansion of governmentality. The digital is at the same time a resource, commodity, and process that is absolutely fundamental to most if not all productive forces across multiple sectors. As a part of the Media Dynamics in South Asia series, this volume explores the making of digital India and specifically deals with the contradictions of an imperfect democracy, internal compulsions, and external pressures that continue to play crucial roles in the shaping of the same. Mindful of the key roles played by political economy and context and based on conversations with theory and practice, it makes a case for critical understanding of the digital embrace in India.

This chapter traces the origins and development of amateurism, from the plans to revive the Olympic Games of classical Greek antiquity in 1894 through its global diffusion. Though often misattributed to ancient Greece, amateurism was a distinctly modern invention born in Great Britain during the latter half of the nineteenth century. A holistic and loosely articulated set of ideas, beliefs, and practices, amateurism is commonly defined as being “about doing things for the love of them, doing them without reward or material gain or doing them unprofessionally.” The amateur played the game for the game's sake, disavowed gambling and professionalism, and competed in a composed, dignified manner. From its institutional seedbed in Victorian Britain, amateurism traveled the sporting globe, from the cosmopolitan Dominion cities of Cape Town, Sydney, and Toronto to distant British imperial outposts in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Like the spread of modern sports and games, the British diffused amateurism via a series of interrelated mechanisms: notably, the public schools, the economic and industrial system, the imperial British army, the evangelical and muscular Christianity movements, and a vast literary network of sporting journals, male adventure stories, and imperial tracts.
