The authors introduce the concept of competence portfolio for graduates of physical and engineering majors, the relevance of which is undoubtful due to recently emerged dynamic of the content of physical and engineering majors. One needs to make up a portfolio to achieve two goals. The first - is to create a complete "picture" of the content of graduates’ competencies for employers, which is modified annually. Such portfolio, along with achievements of social and scientific activities includes competency structure as a hierarchical graph. The nodes of the graph contain learning disciplines, the study of which helps students of physical and engineering majors to develop this competence. The second goal – is the accumulation of graduate’s memory bank, which includes semantic structure of educational problems of physical and engineering disciplines that make an important contribution to the development of competencies. This article describes the strategy of achieving the first goal.

An aspect of quality in higher education is the quality of the outcomes achieved. Higher education adds value by developing job-related skills and competencies. It is also not known to what extent, graduates’ competence goes in line with the demands of the employers. This study was to assess the employability and competency of statistics graduates. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysis the using SPSS version 23. This study employed a Kaplan–Meier estimate to compare the duration of unemployed times from two or more groups. To assess whether there is a real difference between groups, we used Log-rank test. From a total of 303 statistics graduates, 17.7% were unemployed and 82.3% were employed. Of employed graduates, 65.8% had a permanent worker and the rest 16.5% of graduates had a temporary worker. The mean duration of unemployed statistics graduate at Bahir Dar University was 12.9 month (95% CI, (9.9, 15.9)). This study revealed that there is a percentage of graduates who are not yet employed and never been employed. Therefore, the department must be a linkage with the different government organization and NGO.This may improve the employability of statistics graduates.

Abstract Changes in the environment of industry may affect the expectations related to the competencies of the employees. Changes to the education system and curricula may be required. The main purpose of this research paper was to analyze the expectations of the industries related to competencies of graduates of engineering programs. The paper presents preliminary research. The survey was conducted at twenty-eight companies within the area of technical university in Poland. Based on the survey, data was collected related to the level of preparation of engineering graduates as well as the industry expectations related to the preparation of engineering graduates. This was done for the purpose of determining the gap between industry expectations and the level of preparation of the engineering graduates. Enterprises expect a wide range of competences from engineering graduates. The most important areas of competence included soft competences and practical knowledge and skills. The biggest gap between industry expectation and graduate’s preparation are the soft skills. Recommendations were suggested which would be incorporated in the engineering curriculum for the purpose of continuous quality improvement.

This study aims to classify graduates based on the similarity of competency characteristics by referring to the indicators of graduate user satisfaction. The indicators are implementation of Islamic values; integrity, ethics, and morals; expertise based on knowledge (professionalism); foreign language skills; ability to use ICT; communication; teamwork; and self-development. The survey was aimed at graduates of five study programs totaling 211 people. Determination of respondents using the purposive sampling technique. Data was collected through a questionnaire containing statements about the eight indicators. Data analysis uses descriptive and multivariate statistics with the non-hierarchical cluster method or K-Means cluster analysis, assisted with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) software. The results show that based on the similarity of competency characteristics, graduates are grouped into three clusters, namely Cluster 1 with 13.27% with characteristics of graduates with low competence, Cluster 2 with 32.7% with characteristics of graduates with high competence, and Cluster 3 with 54.03% with the characteristics of graduates with moderate competence. Thus, a strategic program that is systematic, comprehensive, and continuous is needed to develop human resources to shape the quality mentality and competence of students and to be competitive with students and by the needs of the workforce or users. For this reason, it is necessary to develop an e-tracer system that is integrated with the campus web and to strengthen synergistic cooperation with stakeholders, including users.

Available documentary and researchevidencesreveal that the majority of Tanzania universities’ graduates (public and private universities) lack competencies or technical skills (employability skills) required for the job market and by potential employers, despite massive curricular reforms implemented in the public higher education sector since the early 1990s. Lack of employability skills which consequently leads to graduate unemployment or un-employability is attributable to the fact that curricular reforms and design in Tanzania public universities undertaken by lecturers and professors do not incorporate basic Tuning principles of competence-based teaching and learning which puts emphasis on competencies and skills by identifying generic and specific competencies during course design or curriculum reform. This study using the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)’s School of Education sought to: (1) explore faculty and students’ views on the application of the Tuning approach in curricular reforms and degree/course design as a mitigation of university graduates’ unemployment and un-employability, (2) solicit stakeholders’(academic staff and students) perceptions of Tuning approach and its relevance in higher education curriculum reforms and design to make higher education more competence-based, and (3) find out students perceived causes of graduate unemployment and un-employability and whether the application of Tuning approach in curriculum reforms and design in universities can be a solution to graduate unemployment. Findings from the study reveal that both faculty and students concur that application of Tuning approach in higher education reforms and curricular design could enhance graduates competences and skills and reduce graduate unemployment.Published online: 30 November 2017

Background: Pharmacists possess a unique and complex body of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to enable them to optimize health outcomes. Pharmacy organizations publish routinely updated versions of professional competencies that help pharmacy schools integrate advances into their curricula. In Lebanon, no national framework for pharmacy education is officially adopted yet. In 2017, the Official Pharmacists’ Association in Lebanon [OPL - Order of Pharmacists of Lebanon] took the initiative to develop a pharmacy core competency framework. Objective: The primary objective of this survey was to evaluate graduates' perceptions of pharmacy-related competencies “taught” across Lebanese pharmacy schools/faculties, based on the suggested Lebanese Pharmacy Competencies Framework. This study also explored the association between graduates' demographics, university attributes, and self-assessed competency performance. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving pharmacists who graduated from Lebanese universities was performed through a 40-minute online questionnaire distributed over social media platforms and groups of pharmacists. Results: Pharmacists perceived their competence as moderate upon graduation, the lowest scores being in fundamental knowledge and medicine supply; the highest reported scores were in personal skills and safe/rational use of medicines. Moreover, females, younger graduates, PharmD holders, and pharmacists working in hospitals/clinical settings and academia had the highest perception of their competencies. Pharmacists in the public sector and medical laboratory directors had the lowest perception of competence. Conclusions: When comparing the taught curriculum to the suggested Lebanese Pharmacy Competency Framework, all domains need to be improved to optimize the perception, education, and practice of pharmacists. It is essential to emphasize fundamental knowledge, medicines supply, and public health competencies in undergraduate curricula and improve continuing professional education.

Purpose It is widely reported that there is a competence deficit between graduating from Australian higher education (HE) and becoming work ready and that the deficit is becoming more pronounced. The purpose of this paper is to examine the work readiness competencies of Australian HE and vocational education (VE) graduates. The reported competence deficits, the causes of these deficits and the potential strategies to overcome these deficits are discussed. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative, inductive research design was used to examine Australian graduates’ work readiness competence, potential deficits, their causes and possible solutions to gain some preliminary insights and help shape future research. A multiple case design was used comprising key stakeholders’ in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. In-depth semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to gain insights from the key stakeholders. Findings The stakeholders reported that the Australian VE and HE sectors do not sufficiently prepare graduates in terms of their work readiness skills. Self-management skills, communication (written and expression), team-work skills, cognitive skills, system thinking and innovation and creativity were the main work readiness competency deficits reported by the stakeholders. Research limitations/implications The research has its limitations in terms of the limited sample and time frame, and the absence of input from graduates. The results of the study indicate the deteriorating state of the Australian graduate labour market and emphasise that an integrated approach is urgently required from all stakeholders to facilitate the transition and reduce the time taken from graduation to employment. Originality/value The focus of the study is located in the Australian labour market in terms of the competencies that reportedly are present upon graduation and the competencies that employers are looking for on recruitment. The requisite competency list and the deficits are examined through the lens of four stakeholder groups; government representatives, industry representatives and VE and HE representatives.

The contribution of agricultural universities to long-term food security in developing countries is widely acknowledged. The extent to which these universities in each country are helping students develop the requisite competence to meet employment needs is unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore Haitian faculty members’ perceptions of student competence at graduation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 37 lecturers who taught at five of the major agricultural universities in Haiti. The results of this revealed that (a) the employment conditions for university graduates were challenging; (b) faculty did not believe it was important for their students to graduate proficient in all the GFRAS New Extensionist competency areas; (c) faculty believed students should have research skills, the ability to be self-directed, and the ability to work in teams; and (d) faculty generally believed their institutions were producing graduates with the competencies needed for employment, although several lecturers identified specific areas for improvement. Recommendations for curricula reform and additional research are suggested.

This study aims to address the problem of competencies offered by the Romanian universities, from the perspective of the players interested in them and present on the labor market: post-university graduates and employers, as competencies’ beneficiaries. We started from the premise that postgraduate studies can make a difference in a changing labor market, and the Master specializations offered by the Romanian universities can provide the competencies required by the employers, particularly in the business world. Our exploratory research aimed mainly to clarify the following aspects: the perception of post-university graduates on the competencies acquired and the perceived level of these competencies; if there is a link between the postgraduate programme and the job currently held by the graduate; if graduates are satisfied /dissatisfied with their job and what is the main reason for satisfaction / dissatisfaction; if the competencies provided by the university coincide with the competencies required by the employer. The results of the research showed that there are categories of competencies perceived to be deficient, both by graduates and employers. However, the graduates declare that, broadly, they are satisfied with their jobs, the reasons not being linked, in most cases, with their level of competence.

Abstract Starting points: In Slovenia, the higher education institution for nursing started exploring employability opportunities in nursing care in connection with the achievement of competencies from students’ and employers’ point of view. This article highlights the importance of monitoring nursing graduates’ employability. Its aim is to examine the employability of nursing care graduates based on the self-evaluation of competences obtained during the last study year and to establish a link between the self-evaluation of competences and students’ academic performance. Methodology: A questionnaire was distributed to full and part time nursing care students attending the last study year at five different healthcare/health sciences faculties in Slovenia and to employers (healthcare institutions) where the majority of nursing care graduates finds employment. We examined the level of competence achieved by nursing students and the level of competences required by employers. The sample included a total of 485 students. 194 surveys were returned, which represent a 40 percent response. We used Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for each individual joined competence. Further, we compared employability skills of students and employers with Mann-Whitney and Wilcox rank-sum test. For correlation between two variables we used Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The Mann-Whitney and Wilkson Rank test show that employers generally assess competences with a higher average grade in comparison to students and these differences are statistically significant. By applying the Spearman correlation analysis, we established that a statistically significant weak correlation may be observed between the “average grade” and “competences” variables. Discussion and conclusion: Our findings show that a continuous monitoring of general and subject-specific competences gained by students, along with a periodic verification of competences demanded by employers, is necessary. It is very important to monitor the requirements of the labour market in terms of ongoing communication with employers who can best estimate special knowledge needs.

The article raises the problem of the formation of entrepreneurial competencies in response to the current situation in the country’s economy, which arose due to the lack of specialists capable of organizing innovation and technology business in the Territories of advanced socio-economic development (TOSED).The authors have analyzed the professional preferences of graduates of the National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (Russia), the University of Zagreb (Croatia), and the University of Lyon (France) and identified the reasons why graduates do not create their own business. In order to determine the necessary cluster of entrepreneurial competencies of university graduates with basic technical education, a survey involving the representatives of Russian and foreign companies working in Russia, including TOSED residents, was conducted. As a result, the authors have received a list of key entrepreneurial competencies necessary for entrepreneurial activities and the formation of graduate competence in the field of management and business. The authors believe that for the formation of entrepreneurial competence, certain conditions must be created in the educational process for preparing a student for entrepreneurial activities, in particular a number of disciplines (entrepreneurship, technological entrepreneurship, project management, business planning) should be included in the curricula; interactive design training methods aimed to develop graduate’s readiness to create their own business should be applied. It is also necessary to provide an the interaction between universities and business structures, which are mostly the residents of TOSED.

Revolution 4.0 requires the Universitas Terbuka Statistics study program to change the educational curriculum that aims to produce quality graduate competencies. Therefore, to collect informationand evaluate the competence of graduates, it is necessary to conduct tracer study research on each graduate. This study aims to measure user satisfaction with graduate competencies using Gap analysis, Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA), Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI), and a multi-attribute Fishbein model. Based on the value of Gap and Science, the main priority that must be improved by graduates to meet user expectations is the ability to solve problems, generate ideas, and be able to present the results of these ideas in the form of reports/journals. The value of the level of suitability between user satisfaction and the importance of the ability of graduates is very good at 92.87% and a CSI value of 78.25%, which means that overall user satisfaction with graduates is good, besides thatbased on the results of the multi-attribute Fishbein model, an Ao value of 158.20 which means that graduate users have a positive attitude towards the abilities of UT Statistics program graduates.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to conceptualise graduate work-readiness (GWR) and to develop a scale to measure it. Design/methodology/approach The methodology entailed the compilation of a literature review and the conduct of qualitative interviews and a focus group to generate items. This study used the “resource-based view” approach to conceptualise a multi-dimensional–“work-readiness integrated competence model (WRICM)”–consisting of four main factors (namely, intellectual, personality, meta-skill and job-specific resources), with a further ten sub-dimensions. Further, a series of tests were performed to assess its reliability and validity. Findings A final 53-item WRICM scale covering four dimensions and ten sub-dimensions of GWR was developed based on the perceptions of 362 HR professionals and managers from seven Asia-Pacific countries. The ten sub-dimensions covering 53 work-readiness skills reflect the perceptions of stakeholders regarding the work-readiness of graduates. The scale was found to be psychometrically sound for measuring GWR. Research limitations/implications Though the WRICM model is based on the inputs of different stakeholders of GWR (employers, educators, policy makers and graduates), the development of the WRICM scale is based on the perspectives of industry/employers only. Practical implications The WRICM model has implications for education, industry, professional associations, policy makers and for graduates. These stakeholders can adapt this scale in assessing the work-readiness of graduates in different streams of education. Originality/value The authors believe that the WRICM model is the first multi-dimensional construct that is based on a sound theory and from the inputs from graduate work-readiness stakeholders from seven Asia-Pacific countries.

Traditionally, graphic design (GD) education focuses on the training of technical production skills to prepare graduates for entry-level employment. However, due to the new challenges and the expanding opportunities of emerging practices, GD graduates are expected to master a wide range of additional competencies beyond traditional scope. The study aims to identify the competencies required by future GD graduates in the context of Malaysia. A two-round modified Delphi technique was used to gain consensus from a panel of experts consisted of design educators and industry practitioners regarding the competencies needed by the graduates for effective work performance. A total of 108 competencies were generated. All accepted competencies were ranked ‘very important’ and ‘extremely important’ by at least 75 percent of the respondents in Round Two. These competencies could be classified into 29 subdomains under five components, i.e., cognitive competence, functional competence, personal competence, ethical competence, and meta-competencies. The findings of this study are useful for enhancing the education and employability of graphic designers as they provide a common vocabulary to relevant stakeholders about the standards of performance for new entrants to the GD profession.

This paper aims to develop a systematic review on graduate employability and competence development, intending to present an international perspective on the matter. It analyses the role of higher education institutions in promoting the development of competences for employability. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) statement was used as a formal systematic review guideline for data collection. Data was obtained from research studies over the period 2009–2019. The analysis included a total of 69 papers from Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. Results show that Europe leads the number of publications on these topics during the past decade. One of the main issues associated with competence development and graduate employability found in the review is related to the (mis)match between university graduates’ competences and employers’ needs. Findings indicate that higher education institutions are concerned with using strategies to enhance the development of competences for graduate employability. Graduate employability and competence development around the world depend on a strong sense of innovation and collaboration practices implemented in higher education.

A strong correlation of the problem of guaranteed information security provision with the human factor and the escalation of threats to information security for professional activity in information society prove the importance of the relevant proper training of highly qualified personnel. The theoretical justification of the integrated approach to modeling students’ information and communication competence (IC competence), including new structure and content of students' preparation under integration of the classical system and e-learning with the development of adequate forms and methods of teaching, promotes the high level of professional competence. The scope of research is represented by the principles of computational modeling of IC competence, formed as a result of continuous staged personnel training in "Professional Education (by Industries)" based on the Federal State Educational Standard of Russia. The research offers an integrated approach to computational modeling of students’ IC competence based on the classification of competencies demonstrating the projection of a professional competency vector on a plane of information and communication technologies (ICT plane) acting as a model of students’ IC competence. Here, any ray of the ICT plane may act as a model of IC competence in a certain specialization of proper training of highly qualified personnel in any industry. Such an approach to IC competence of a graduate of an educational organization is determined by respective aims and fields of professional activity corresponding to IC competencies. The methodology of content design has been developed for educational disciplines in continuous information and academic training of graduates under e-learning, as well as an algorithm based on the competence approach, making it possible to explicitly determine the generation path of IC competence of professional education organization graduates having different basic training, which eliminates the threat of insufficient or excessive content of the intended study materials.

Early career experience can play a significant part in lifelong professional capability and the support and knowledge gained during the early years of graduate employment can influence future career direction and success. Whilst there are prescribed models of graduate development relative to the surveying professions, for example, those relating to the APC utilised by the RICS, there has been little evaluation in terms of their relative contribution to career success. Through the use of a questionnaire survey, the issue of learning and development for new graduates in their early career, the extent to which new graduates perceive themselves to be competent in various major quantity surveying activities and, the range of graduate training provided by the employer were explored. The main conclusions drawn from the study are that: new graduates exhibit a high level of self-doubt in professional competence; task competence is influenced by frequency of application, years of postgraduate experience and the mode of study taken by graduates in entering the QS profession. There is a difference between training received by graduates working for consultant and contracting employers. Graduates from full time study mode tend to receive more training from their employers compared to part time graduates.

In facing the challenges of era 4.0, graduates are undoubtedly faced with language and communicative competency struggle to ensure that there is ease of transition from that of the academia to the workplace. This transition would entail innovative insight in language learning to equip graduates with apt technical and non-technical competencies for purposes of employability and work readiness. Graduates will need to familiarize themselves with the professional environment and be familiar with the language of the community of practice. To be considered a legitimate member of a community, the situated learning theory postulates that continued participation and engagement over a period of time with a community, provides one the ability to be considered as member of a community. For this purpose, a mixed method research was conducted in a private university to obtain the views of graduates and employers involved in student internship programs at an Information Technology (IT) company. Respondents were required to provide their feedback on communicative competence expected of interns for employability and work readiness. This study aimed at investigating the problems of Arabic teachers’ professional competence in improving the quality of the graduates at MA Al-Musdariyah 2 Cimahi. Phenomenology, scientific approach, and a formal juridical approach were used as the method in this study. This study belonged to a case study. The result of this study showed that the main problems related to the teacher’s professional competence in teaching and learning Arabic were an unsuitable academic qualification, the lack of teachers’ welfare, teachers’ discipline and awareness, tutoring, and training. The implication of this study indicated that teachers’ professional competence to improve the quality of the graduates had been implemented. However, the implementation of teachers’ professional competence was considered less than optimal. It influenced the quality of the graduates. In other words, the objectives of teaching and learning activities were not achieved. Therefore, in this case, teachers as the most important factor in teaching and learning processes should improve their competences as a manifestation to improve the quality of the graduates.

Research background. Reality of everyday life requires from a young person continual improvement, competitiveness and efficiency in striving for goals needed at work. Employers are increasingly demanding results “faster, better, cheaper”. The main goal of higher education institutions is to prepare good and motivated specialists. Increasing migration of youth, among them the most qualified professionals, to foreign countries has shown that a large part of the workers are not prepared for employment and work in Lithuania (Čepas, 2008a). Thus, employability competence is becoming a more important issue. Previous research results showed that there was no clear opinion about the concept of employability competence, which skills, abilities, personal qualities and knowledge are needed that young people could realize themselves in the world of labour. The first part of article discussed the concept of employability competence, employability competence structure / content, typology and the most important factors conditioning the graduates’ employability competence. Employability competence is defined as “skills, personal qualities and values that must be acquired by all graduates regardless of their direction of study subjects (HEC, 1992). According to the author (Čepas, 2008) employability competence is explained as ability to chose a workplace, ability of preparing for work activities, employment and ability to save this job based on the knowledge, skills, abilities and values as a whole. Generalization structure of employability competence needs to emphasize the choice of workplace, to acquire and have special abilities to adapt in the workplace. Graduates’ employability competence is largely determined by students, employers and higher education institutions’ interaction and collaboration. Therefore, in the scientific literature we can find a lot of discussion about the graduates’ employability competence. The object of the survey was the importance of employability competencies for employment. The aim of the survey was to analyse the importance of employability competencies for graduates’ employment in tourism sector. Research methods. In order to be more aware of the importance of graduates’ employability competence in the tourism sector, two quantitative studies were carried out. The first study was done with students in tourism studies and the second one – with the employers of tourism organizations. The study data were processed using the methods of mathematical statistics. Research results. Rresearch results showed that the employability competence of graduates in accordance with their gained specialization in the tourism sector is a most important skill among personal abilities and personal characteristics.

Graduate competency standards have been implemented by the government through relevant regulations for all subjects courses at all levels of education. It is necessary to make efforts so that Christian religious education can be organized without losing its essence. One form is his efforts to investigate the competency standards of Graduates of Christian religious education based on the Gospel of John. The goal is to uncover the essence of the standard of competence of Graduates of Christian education. This effort is carried out using hermeneutic methods. As a result, two standard models of competency of religious education graduates were found, namely the standard of competence of religious graduates in the Jewish perspective and the standard of competence of religious graduates in perspective. The implication for the learning of Christian education in Indonesia is to maintain the essence of the substance of Christian religious education, develop proficiency in the presentation of materials especially related to the use of terms and languages, sharpen the skill in observing the environment to create learning opportunities and increase the contribution and active role of educators, learners, parents and the church.

Different sector of industry has different standard of quality. The interpretation of employers towards graduates counts the job placement of graduates. It is hard to standardized quality across industries. Several attributes show that competence relatedness and autonomy do influence the quality of graduates. A quantitative method was used in this study for data gathering. All items were using 10-point likert scale. The content validity of this questionnaire were reviewed by five human resource professionals, and Cronbach alpha for each item is more than 0.75 which is acceptable. Questionnaires were given to the human resource officers in the company through email. Convenient sampling was applied in this study for data collection. 50 questionnaires were distributed across manufacturing industry and services industry in Malaysia. Using Partial least square to analyze the data, this study found out that competence in communication is the same criteria which majority across industries are seeking upon graduates. Therefore, Industries that involved are manufacturing (34.38%) and services (65.63%). Measurement model and structural model were assessed to see the relationship. In modern conditions, the task of integrating science, education and innovation activities is of great importance. The need for highly qualified and proactive employees leads to the natural integration of the University and employers, who are the main external stakeholders and consumers of educational services. The article discusses the main forms of interaction between Polotsk State University and the main enterprises and organizations of the region. The main results of comprehensive monitoring of employers ‘satisfaction with the quality of training specialists in the higher educational institution are presented. The assessment of consumer satisfaction with educational services in the framework of this monitoring was carried out on the basis of a competence campaign. This is primarily due to the fact that the quality of education is determined precisely by the competencies formed by the graduate, which allow applying the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities in solving specific professional tasks. The monitoring demonstrated a high level of development of a number of competencies, in particular the competence “ability to use information and communication technologies”, which highlights the fact that the educational programs of compulsory and additional education implemented at Polotsk State University provide the knowledge and practical skills necessary for using the latest ICT in professional activities. Employers have also identified the scarce skills of graduates, namely “Ability to take decisive action in case of uncertainty”, “Ability to anticipate a problem” and “Ability to use time effectively”. Based on the self-assessment of graduates, during their studies at Polotsk State University they have to a large extent developed the competences required for successful work in today’s economy. The success of Polotsk State University graduates is clear evidence of the high quality of their training.
