Investor Relations (IR) has become a key area of focus in academic and professional debates over the last few decades. Although the identity of the field is contested, with both finance and communication disciplines claiming the fledgling field, there is consensus across disciplines that communication is paramount in IR success. However, a number of scholars (see Schutzmann, 2013; Laskin, 2011; Watson, 2008) argue that IR is not being fully utilised to maximise fair valuation and obtain favourable return on company investments due to lack of strategic communication expertise among IR practitioners who usually have a purely financial background. It is against this background that this study evaluated communication strategies employed by IR practitioners in South Africa to build and maintain relationships with investor stakeholders. The purpose is to contribute towards theoretical debates on strategic communication practice in IR, an area that remains under theorised and understudied, especially within a developing country context. The theoretical frame of the study was derived from public relations Excellence theory and the two-way symmetrical communication (Grunig and Hunt, 1984). The research methodology of the study was qualitative and employed an explorative design to gather data through a combination of document analysis, indepth interviews and content analysis. The findings show that financial and non-financial information is disseminated to investor stakeholders. However, the communication of financial information by IR professionals to investor stakeholders remains dominant in South Africa. Importantly, two-way symmetrical communication and two-way asymmetrical communication strategies are used in different ways to build and maintain relationships and to disclose mandatory key corporate information to investor stakeholders. One-on-one meetings in different formats and online dialogue with closed feedback emerged as the dominant key two-way symmetrical communication strategies of nurturing and sustaining relationships with investor stakeholders. This includes two-way asymmetrical communication strategies such as the corporate publications and IR websites. IR policies that promote two-way symmetrical communication, trust, honest, transparency and credibility emerged in the study as being implemented by IR professionals of South Africa. In addition, the findings show that such characterised IR policies advances the rules of investor stakeholder relationship building and engagement. However, it remains unclear from a South African standpoint whether IR professionals are ready to engage in an open dialogue with investor stakeholders using social media. The findings show that IR in South Africa has trascended into a synergy era where two-way symmetrical communication is emphasised. It further shows that the theoretical frame of the study as derived from public relations Excellence theory and the two-way symmetrical communication (Grunig and Hunt, 1984) has positive implications in the investor relations efforts of building relationships and information disclosure. However, investor stakeholder preferences of engaging with IR professionals require further exploration. This will assist in theorising communication strategies ideal for IR practice.

As design build (DB) becomes more popular, different ways of writing contracts and forming relationships with the various parties are being considered. The main point of this paper is to look at the relationships between the various parties involved in the design build delivery method. Contracts are what legally tie the parties together, but there can be many different problems with these contracts. A poor contract can easily strain good working relations. Contracts will divide the responsibility among the contractor and the designer. There are many different ways to mitigate risk for the design build team in a contract. This paper considers several ways to improve the working relations in a design build team. The contractors and designers face a considerable problem when placing a bid for a DB project. Their team could potentially lose a great deal of money if they under bid the project and win. But they risk not winning a project if their bid is high even if it is reasonable. Communication between the owners, contractors, and designers needs to be effective. There are various problems that have been stated by owners that they believe limit design build. The use of a third party has been popular by public project owners to ensure quality and to check the design build team's work. This relationship with third parties needs to be changed so that the project will not be slowed down. There are a few different ways that are discussed to improve the relations between the contractors, designers, and owners and ways to improve many of mentioned problems.

The purpose of this study was to explore the communication of positive illusions (PIs) during big fights in dating relationships. A communicative analysis of PIs was investigated. Both members of dating couples individually completed a survey that measured PIs, communication of PIs, and communication satisfaction. The results suggest that partners' PIs are strongly associated with one another, individuals communicate their PIs to a moderate degree during big fights in dating relationships, and individuals' PIs are strongly associated with their communication of PIs during big fights. Only limited support was found for the hypothesis that increases in the communication of PIs would be correlated with increases in communication satisfaction. Several implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Background: Evidence from population-level studies demonstrates that adolescent sexual health outcomes are associated with social exclusion, and that certain groups, including young people looked after by local authorities often experience poorer sexual health outcomes. The poorer sexual health outcomes observed for looked after young people has led to the Scottish Government recommending that looked after young people be prioritised for the delivery of sexual health and relationships education, and that residential carers, foster carers and social workers should play a key role in the delivery of sexual health and relationships information to looked after young people. This recommendation builds on existing policy initiatives that have emphasised that parents should be routinely talking to their children about sexual health and relationships. Despite a growing research interest in the health of looked after young people, there is currently little known about how sexual health and relationships discussions are undertaken within the care setting. This is because much of the research that has been published to date has focussed upon identifying barriers to communication rather than establishing how communications are shaped by the characteristics of carers, looked after children and the wider context of the care system. In this thesis I hope to address this research gap by exploring what factors shape communications about sexual health and relationships within the care setting, and examining the extent to which connectedness, monitoring and supervision — parenting factors identified as promoting positive sexual health outcomes for adolescents within the wider literature — mediate these discussions. Methods: 54 in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with looked after young people (aged 14-18), care leavers (aged 16-23), residential workers, foster carers and social workers in one local authority in Scotland between August and December 2011. Data were analysed thematically, with data collected from corporate parents and looked after young people used to compare and contrast experiences of talking about sexual health within the care setting. Findings: The results presented in this study demonstrate that there has been a perceived shift in attitudes towards talking to looked after young people about their sexual health, and that residential carers, foster carers and social workers believe that talking to young people about sexual health and relationships should be a core responsibility of the corporate parent. Despite this, the results of this study demonstrate that talking to young people about sexual health and relationship is a subject that is fraught with tensions, with many of the corporate parents interviewed expressing difficulties reconciling their own views about the appropriateness of talking to young people about sexual behaviours with their professional responsibility to inform and protect looked after young people from risk. Looking specifically at how communications about sexual health and relationships were undertaken within the care setting, the results of this study show that talking to young people in care about sexual health and relationships is mediated by the impact or pre-care and care histories, in particular maltreatment and poor attachment security, upon young people’s understandings of relationships and their ability to trust other people and seek out help and support. Whilst corporate parents emphasised the need for training to help them identify strategies for talking to young people about sexual health and relationships, the results of this study show that corporate parents are already undertaking sexual health and relationships work that is tailored to the age and stage of the child, and is balanced by the provision of monitoring and supervision to minimise risk. Conclusions: The results of this thesis show that discussions about sexual health and relationships need to be underpinned by a trusting relationship between corporate parents and looked after children. As such, an emphasis needs to be placed upon improving young people’s ability to trust other people. Improving permanency for young people in the care system, in conjunction with the development of attachment based sexual health practices, may result in the promotion of positive outcomes for looked after young people. Future policies and training relating to the provision of sexual health and relationships education within the care system should reflect this fact.

The prevailing approach to managing persons with criminal histories involves community supervision professionals like probation and parole officers partnering with other mental health providers to address clients’ needs. The relationships between individual professionals are seldom researched, though, and the current study aims to address this deficit in the empirical literature. This study utilized interviews about professionals’ perceptions of their work experiences, analyzed open-endedly to identify major themes. Mental health providers’ themes included appreciation and process of collaboration, individual characteristics and roles, characteristics of collaboration, elements of interprofessional relationships, and involvement of the courts. Community supervision professionals discussed issues pertaining to appreciation and process of collaboration, individual characteristics and roles, when conflict occurs, and the lack of basic knowledge about other professionals. Second, these partnerships were examined in light of interprofessional healthcare competencies. Themes identified here resembled healthcare values and ethics competencies and roles and responsibilities competencies; healthcare competencies regarding interprofessional communication and teamwork showed partial congruence with the current themes. Overall, interprofessional collaboration is valued. This research highlights the strengths of this type of interprofessional collaboration and offers suggestions for improving the efficacy of collaboration.

Music is widely used to accompany moving images, in films, advertising, television programmes and computer games. The process of choosing and using a piece of pre-existing commercial music for this purpose is known as synchronisation. The addition of music to a piece of film enhances the final work with cultural meaning, and generates additional income for the rights holders. This research examines the information needs of professionals involved in the selection of music, including Users from the advertising and film communities and Owners from the recording and publishing industries. A tentative communications model is developed and proposed from musicological, semiotic and communications literature. Interviews, knowledge organisation systems, queries and observations are identified as rich potential sources of textual data relating to the communications process around satisfying the Users’ information needs. The content of these texts is analysed to identify key musical facets. Mood is found to be an important factor when searching for unknown musical items. Using a Discourse Analytic approach to the interview texts, four discourses, or interpretive repertoires, are identified. These repertoires carry conflicting meanings of music and are employed throughout the community, although relative emphases vary according to the viewpoint of the stakeholder. This is supported by an analysis of the written texts of both the Owners (music search engines) and the Users (written queries, or briefs). A comparison is drawn between the emphasis of the repertoires and the precision of the search engines. The repertoires are applied to the theoretical communications model, which is revised to reflect the findings of the analyses. This is used to make recommendations on how to improve the disintermediated communications process, by emphasising the repertoires employed by the Users rather than those of the Owners.

The university classroom is an invaluable site for social activism. In this study, I focus on the university classroom in order to consider how university instructors care for students. More specifically, I consider what I call critical care--that is, care underscored by critical and critical communication pedagogy. I start by defining care, critical pedagogy, and critical communication pedagogy. Then, I focus on my own experiences autoethnographically to understand some of the ways I have come to understand care. After conducting interviews with teachers and those teachers' former students, I conducted dyad interviews between the teacher and the teacher's former student. I use the transcripts of these interviews as the data for an analysis of how these teachers and students understand care in their relationship. Because the teachers selected must have some background with critical and/or critical communication pedagogy, I also use the transcripts to build a case for critical care. I argue that critical care is the best way to build more humane and equitable classrooms.

Influencer marketing is today a well-known marketing strategy used by many companies and the phenomenon is growing day by day. This is mostly a strategy with the spotlight on how the company can reach their consumers through famous people on social medias, not with focus on what relationship is created between all the parties. This study has the purpose to create a better understanding of how influencers use a marketing communication strategy to build a relationship with their target groups. To delimitate the research the focus will be on Instagram as a platform for influencers to work on. To get an answer on the purpose, a qualitative case study consisting of three interviews with influencers, together with three complementary content studies have been executed. The theories used in the study are influencer marketing along with a marketing communication strategy and relationship marketing model. These are the foundation and the theoretical framework for the study and used to investigate the influencer - follower relationship from the perspective of the influencer. The collected data presents a result that shows that influencers are concerned about their relationship to the followers and are dedicated to improve this. They all see a meaningful gain in creating a long-term relationship with respect and trust shown from both parties. The influencers are in some ways conscious about their usage of marketing communication strategies and in some ways not. We can see similarities and differences between all the influencers regarding all theories. The differences can depend on various nationalities among the respondents and inequality in the number of followers. As a conclusion and theoretical contribution from this study we claim that several parts of the marketing communication strategy used can have a direct impact on specific parts of the relationship marketing model used in this research. Influencers and companies who are aware of these factors may have a bigger chance of success.

This qualitative study explored the lives of 11 Black men to better understand how Black men who were raised in single Black mother homes build romantic relationships with Black women. One focus group and a series of individual in-person interviews were conducted with the participants who ranged between 23 and 43 years of age. Participants were asked questions that inquired about their family of origin, messages they received about relationships, how they define masculinity, their perceptions of Black women, and their previous and current experiences building romantic relationships. Guided by a narrative approach, several different coding methods were used to help reveal six core themes related to the study. Some of the more significant themes include: 1) conflicted feelings towards their parents and Black women; 2) male mentorship; and 3) masculinity. Because the study was conducted using a non-deficit approach, the findings were analyzed using Helms’ “Black racial identity development model”, critical race theory, and intersectionality; to conceptualize the participants’ experiences though the lens of White privilege, racism, oppression, and racial identity. The study revealed an inequity of empathy among the group of men related to their feelings towards their mothers and fathers. Additionally, then men’s feelings towards their mothers had a larger impact compared to their fathers on their perceptions of Black woman and how they build romantic relationships. This study is significant because it is the first study to simultaneously explore single Black mother homes and Black men and romantic relationships. Additionally, the study is significant because it provides rich insight about this specific topic and other features of the Black experience along with culturally relevant interventions and implications for counselors and counselor educators.

Although research has described mentoring programs to have positive effects with youth, there are few studies that describe how mentors build relationships with homeless youth. In this study, I sought to explore how mentors of a community-based organization, Starting Right Now, built relationships with homeless youth. Starting Right Now is a multi-faceted, community-based intervention developed in 2009 in Tampa, FL. They provide services to homeless adolescents who are no longer living in the custody of a parent or guardian. The program provides residential, educational, recreational, and professional development services, as well as mental and physical health care. Additionally each youth in the program receives a trained mentor. A qualitative approach allowed mentors to share what strategies they used to connect with their mentee and overcome challenges within the relationship. Five female adults were recruited from Starting Right Now to participate in individual semi-structured interviews. Results showed that for some mentor-mentee pairs, the relationship developed easily if they found similar commonalities (e.g. outgoing personalities). Further, mentors discussed the strategies and activities that created a closer relationship and how they overcame challenges with the relationship. Finally mentors discussed the advice they would give to someone else looking to mentor a homeless youth. Overall mentors in this study reported that commitment and patience are major components to being a successful mentor to a homeless youth.

The major promise of computational technology for learning is in making discovery and acquisition of knowledge accessible to a wider range of people. The protean expressive and constructive nature of computational technology facilitates more powerful and effective learning methodologies. Enabling multiple forms of representation through computational approaches to thinking about various phenomena not only potentially opens new domains of knowledge, but also permits a re-structuration of domains by rethinking content and activity. This thesis provides an exemplar of this potential through children learning about Balance Control in Dynamic Systems (BCDS), which adds a particular value given that BCDS is considered too complex for young learners. A Balance Control Microworld was created to help learners think about how to program physical robots to perform balancing acts, such as balancing an inverted pendulum, based on the observations of their own body motions. A Spatial Computing Paradigm (SCP) was developed to allow learners to carry out various control operations using familiar 2D properties of on-screen objects. The physical robots have a dual-mode ability that allowed learners to record and observe motions while controlling the robots manually by hand as well as under program control. The study involved two groups of learners, ages 13 to 15, over twelve months. BCDS concepts that emerged include the role of speed, creating predictions, managing system states, and analyzing system's stability. Moreover, powerful ideas in computational and mathematical thinking helped enable thinking and understanding in BCDS as well as reflection over the whole process. The evolution of the Microworld was guided by a practice of applied epistemological anthropology.
(cont.) An iterative process was used to identify important themes as they emerged during the course of the fieldwork. The resulting themes, as reflected in the case studies, come in three flavors: One focuses on ideas in BCDS that were learned by youth and could lead to deeper understanding in that rich field; the second shows how the tools and approach evolved to better support the learner along with the role of the researcher in the learning process; the third discusses the learning implications of a technology-enhanced Microworld by demonstrating common learning assumptions that need careful reconsideration.

It also intends to assist Xennial BZ Solution with advice to a basis of decision-making while executing their relationship marketing strategy on social media.  Methods: This thesis has been conducted as a qualitative cross-sectional study with an exploratory purpose and an inductive approach. The data has been collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through a qualitative data analysis.  Result and conclusions: I conclude that social media presence engages customers on the financial services business market in relationship building if right content is created on right platforms to right customers. It appeared in the result that customers use social media in the information-seeking process and in the interaction process and that successful integration and understanding of the platforms contribute to higher response rates, which promotes relationship building.  Delimitations: This study aims to focus on customers on the Californian market for financial services, which delimits the scope of this study. It is also delimited to only cover SMEs and might therefore not be relevant for larger organizations. This thesis is also delimited to just focus on selected social media platforms and might therefore not be applicable to all situations.  Theoretical and practical contributions: The theoretical contribution from this thesis fills the knowledge gap concerning how social media content engages customers on the financial iv  services business market to build relationships. This research examined Facebook friendships between college/university instructors and students. Based on the development of instructor-student dual relationships, this study described instructors’ Facebook use with students. This included explanations for allowing/not allowing students, communication with students, and ethical concerns. Rooted in the theories of impression management, self-monitoring and role conflict, plus the concept of ambient awareness, hypotheses predicted relationships between instructors’ individual differences and Facebook use: (1) self-monitoring would be positively related to role conflict; and (2) self-monitoring, (3) role conflict, and (4) ambient awareness would be positively related to instructors’ self-presentation, impression management behaviors, and privacy management. Emails were sent to faculty at 270 colleges/universities throughout the U.S. and 331 instructors completed the online survey. Of these, 56.2% allowed students as friends. Open-ended answers revealed that instructors allowed students as friends to communicate, to facilitate learning about each other, and because it was difficult to decline requests. Some instructors did not allow certain students (e.g., problematic students, undergraduates). They communicated by commenting on and liking posts on students’ pages, and had ethical concerns about negative consequences. Open-ended answers revealed that instructors did not allow students as friends to maintain the professional divide and avoid favoritism, which explained their ethical concerns. Hierarchical regression analyses tested the predicted relationships. Results revealed that self-monitoring approached significance as having a positive relationship with role conflict and a negative relationship with privacy management, but was not related to self-presentation or impression management behaviors. Role conflict was not related to impression management. Awareness of students was positively related to self-presentation and impression management behaviors, but unexpectedly, perception of students’ awareness of instructors was negatively related to privacy management. A partial correlation analysis tested high/low self-monitors separately and not only replicated the results, but also revealed that high self-monitors’ perception of students’ awareness was positively correlated with self-presentation and impression management behaviors. These findings indicate that ambient awareness is related to online communication and should be studied further. This is especially intriguing since the two types of ambient awareness related differently to the three types of impression management studied in this research.

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of attendance longevity participation in an after school program, attending one and two times or three times weekly for two years, designed to build intentional relationships and support academic success, on urban elementary school students' achievement, attendance, and positive school awards. Independent variable attendance fidelity condition one was those students who attended the Hope Center for Kids after school program regularly scheduled after school activities one and two times weekly for two years (n = 9) and independent variable attendance fidelity condition two was those students who attended the Hope Center for Kids regularly scheduled after school activities three times weekly for two years (n = 10). Same urban school district control students (n = 11) did not participate in the after school program served as the study control group. The null hypothesis for between group California Achievement Test Normal Curve Equivalent posttest-only average and below average reading scores where F(2, 27) = 2.07, p = .145 was not rejected. Null hypotheses were also not rejected for between group California Achievement Test Normal Curve Equivalent posttest-only average range language scores where F(2, 27) = 1.09, p = .350 and between group California Achievement Test Normal Curve Equivalent posttest-only average range math scores where F(2, 27) = 0.38, p = .687. School attendance as measured by total end of the fifth-grade year overall absence totals were not statistically different where F(2, 27) = 0.65, p = .530 and school-wide awards and recognition as measured by end of the fifth-grade year overall awards presented totals were also congruent where X 2(2, N = 48) = 0.591, p = .744. Findings suggest that even limited student participation in Hope Center for Kids after school program resulted in achievement, attendance, and earned awards consistent with the study's control group students who were not in need of these after school services.

College student persistence has long interested scholars and universities alike (Bean, 1983; Goodman, & Pascarella, 2006; Hlinka, 2017; Moschetti & Hudley, 2014; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Tinto; 1993; 2012). While universities have given attention to the academic integration of students (e.g., their GPA and general academic performance), social integration has become increasingly more studied as an integral component to a student’s likelihood to persist (Tinto, 1993; 2012). This study incorporated social capital theory (Coleman, 1988) as a lens to understand how social integration may affect a student’s likelihood to persist. Using survey methodology and a sample of first-year students at large midwestern university (n = 101), the results showed that strong school social capital in the form of relationships with peers and authority figures at college may help a student overcome structural disadvantages embedded within their family and home community social networks. Specific differences in the formation of social capital between nonrural and rural students were also explored with meaningful results. Rural students were more likely to perceive stronger relationships with authority figures at college than nonrural students, and nonrural students were more likely to perceive their home communities as more supportive of higher education than rural students.

The Design-Build delivery method has gained popularity in the construction industry in the 21st century among clients seeking singular responsibility, shorter delivery time frame and management of complex works. In this exploratory study, a model that considers the effects of project technical system on the project organisation structure has been proposed. Project technical system comprises of two dimensions: technical uncertainty and technical complexity, while integration, organisational differentiation, information processing and project size were considered as dimensions of the project organisation structure. Several hypotheses linking the relationship between technical uncertainty, technical complexity and project structure has been developed. A self-administered questionnaire was developed as the data collection instrument. Field data were collected from design-build projects in the civil and architectural construction industry in Taiwan, and analysed at the project level. The technical system-structure relationships were tested statistically mainly by multiple regression. Results indicate that various scholarly perspectives of uncertainty have a common underlying construct. Several inter-correlations among components of the technical system were identified, and interactively they affect the project organisation structure. Technical uncertainty was found to be a better predictor of information processing and internal integrative efforts than technical complexity. Less structured and flexible information processes and coordinative mechanisms were favoured under high levels of technical uncertainty and complexity. Technical complexity was found to partially predict organisational differentiation, particularly by the interacting effects of project scope and concurrency. The level of technical staffing could be explained by project scope and technical differentiation of the complexity dimension. Lastly, the results were mixed for technical complexity as a predictor of the extent to which project work is subcontracted. The findings of this study contributed to the understanding of the relationships between technical system and organisation structure in complex Design-Build projects. Various managerial implications were outlined. The model proposed in this study can be extended to include project effectiveness, which may lead to the identification of key structural arrangements that contribute to improved project performance.

The residential designs of Fay Jones embody the ideals of organic architecture in the highest degree. Working in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright, Jones produced a wide range of houses that represent an intensely personal endeavor. Although the chapels and public pavilions designed by Jones are his most famous works, the meticulous construction detailing and elaborate material joints in Jones' houses reward long-term residents, who discover new details and new compositions of light and shadow for years after moving into their homes. The careful working and reworking of details contribute to a unifying generative idea that enforces the part-to-whole relationship of organic building, but it is also an outpouring of Jones' belief that caring is an “imperative moral issue.” It is difficult to occupy a Jones building or study the work without getting swept up in Jones' notion that “[one] must idealize, even romanticize, what [one] is doing.” Through a consideration of clients' relationships with Fay Jones and the spaces they occupy, this study reflects on Jones' hope that “perhaps the inhabitants can be more comfortably and more meaningfully integrated into the natural forces of life.” Jones' thoughts about architecture, recorded in his journals and lecture notes, reinforce the accounts of key, residential clients who benefited from Jones' earnestness about building and living. The carefully arranged joint details of Jones' designs form a physical representation of the close relationships of Jones, his clients, and the craftsmen who built the work.

Local government and social enterprises are significant development actors in local communities. Local governments are representatives of the people as agents of place. As agents of place, the primary role of local government is to shape place for the people through community engagement and community development. Social enterprises are businesses as well as social change agents, engaging citizens in local communities to build capacity and social capital. This thesis explores the nature of cross-sectoral relationships between local government and social enterprises, and their potential for public value creation. There has been little academic interest in community value creation through relationships between social enterprises and local government. This study contributes to understanding the nature and extent of existing relationships between local councils and social enterprises and the possible influence of these relationships on community capacity building. Local government is being challenged to reform its role and rethink how it engages with community, and to recognise that communities can create change. There is an emerging policy interest in social enterprises as social change agents and development organisations within local community. This research examines the relationship between local government and social enterprises as it plays out in particular communities of place in the island State of Tasmania. The research is conducted within the framework of the constructivist-interpretive paradigm utilising an eSurvey and case study methodology. The purpose of the constructivist approach is to capture diverse, reflective and experiential knowledge on the perceived social reality of participants. The research focuses on the interface and logic of relationships between local government and social enterprises. Over half of 29 councils in Tasmania responded to the eSurvey, and twenty six qualitative interviews were undertaken with four case study councils and eight case study social enterprises. The research demonstrates a bureaucratic top-down approach that local government takes to community development, compared to a high level of self-initiated and self-organisation of community development by social enterprises. The research also illustrates the strength of social enterprises in their entrepreneurial responsiveness to finding local solutions to local issues, and suggests social enterprises have a potential role in community development partnerships with local government. And while each contributes significantly to public value, it is clear from the results that the idea of cross-sectoral collaboration to provide local solutions to local problems is not yet considered an option by either local government or social enterprises. Most councils struggle to understand the potential for social enterprises to contribute to the economic as well as the social fabric of their communities. The results from this research are important to scholars researching cross-sectoral relationships that create public value. They are also of importance to local government and social enterprise practitioners within the community development space. This study contributes to knowledge of both local government and social enterprises by developing a conceptual framework to guide analysis and understanding of the complexities and dynamics of existing relationships between these two diverse organisations. The study suggests further research to examine the potential of cross-sectoral relationships between local government and community organisations such as social enterprises, as a strategic mechanism to resolve local social issues. The research illustrates that community is the common factor between these local government and social enterprises. Community is where each organisation operates, serves the people and engages with citizens of community. Therefore, community is identified as a potential terrain for collaboration.

There is a common perception of marketing as convincing consumers to buy products that they don’t really need. While this may be true in certain cases, this perception fails to acknowledge the full potential of marketing and its importance in the world. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate and discuss the applications of marketing in the nonprofit sector, among international nonprofit organizations. The dissertation will focus on the role of Facebook in nonprofit marketing; while in the past this medium has been dismissed as superficial and not being associated with real change, this study aims to investigate the connection between Facebook engagement and real world behavior – in this case, donation and volunteer activity. The goals of this dissertation were accomplished through a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research backed by a thorough literature review. The content of three nonprofit organizations’ Facebook pages was analyzed, and a survey was administered to the followers of these organizations. Findings revealed that a follower’s perceptions of the content shared by the nonprofit organization, as well as his/her relationship with that nonprofit organization, positively influences that follower’s engagement on Facebook in the form of likes, comments and shares. It was also revealed that engagement via Facebook has a positive correlation with a follower’s real-world donation and volunteer behavior. To achieve success via Facebook and garner donors and volunteers, international nonprofit organizations must therefore focus on sharing interesting and engaging content as well as building relationships with their followers through Relationship Marketing techniques and online interactivity.

Embora possa ser verdade em alguns casos, este senso comum não permite que se compreenda todo o potencial do marketing e a sua importância no mundo. Esta dissertação é uma proposta de investigação e discussão da aplicação do marketing no sector de organizações sem fins lucrativos. A dissertação irá focar no papel do Facebook no marketing sem fins lucrativos; enquanto que no passado este meio foi desconsiderado por ser superficial e não associado a mudanças reais, este estudo procura investigar a relação entre o engajamento no Facebook e o comportamento no mundo real – neste caso, donativos e voluntariado. Os objetivos desta dissertação foram cumpridos através de ambas pesquisas quantitativa e qualitativa, suportadas por uma profunda revisão de literatura. Foram analisados os conteúdos de três páginas de organizações sem fins lucrativos no Facebook e levado a cabo um questionário aos seguidores dessas três organizações. Os resultados mostraram que a percepção dos seguidores sobre o conteúdo partilhado pela organização sem fins lucrativos, bem como a sua relação com a organização, influencia positivamente o engajamento no Facebook no que se refere a likes, comentários e partilhas. Igualmente, foi evidenciado que o engajamento via Facebook está positivamento relacionado com o comportamento do seguidor no mundo real, relativamente a donativos e voluntariado. Para terem sucesso no Facebook e angariar doadores e voluntários, as organizações internacionais sem fins lucrativos devem se focar na partilha de conteúdos interessantes e apelativos, bem como construir relações com os seus seguidores através de técnicas de Marketing Relacional e interação online.

abstract: The purpose of the study is to explore the identity development and organizational culture of a student organization, the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations council (NALFO) by implementing a community of practice approach at a large, public university in southwestern United States. The objective is to construct a sustainable camaraderie among the existing Latino fraternal organizations at the university to influence leadership development, work toward a common vision, and a cohesive and systematic approach to collaboration, consequently transforming organizational culture. This study investigates the factors that contribute to and/or inhibit increased communication and collaboration and to describe the experiences of Latino fraternal members who are purposefully engaged in a community of practice. There are 57 fraternal organizations in five umbrella councils at the university, including predominately Caucasian, historically African American, Latino, and Multicultural groups, whose platforms are commonly leadership, scholarship, and philanthropy. This action research examines the experiences of six NALFO members individually and working as a community with the guidance of a mentor (the researcher). The researcher employs use of an anonymous initial and post electronic survey, a participant personal statement, an intentional and purposeful community of practice, a semi-structured individual interview, and focus groups to collect data. Findings suggest that length of membership and fraternal experience influence participant responses; however, the themes remain consistent. Building relationships, perception (by members and outsiders), identity development, organizational management, and challenging perspectives (from outside influences) are factors that influence the organizational culture of the organization. On the post electronic survey all participants indicate that the implementation of an intentional community of practice can benefit the organization by encouraging participation and increasing communication. While participants suggest activities for encouraging member engagement, they determine that actual participation would be dependent on individual motivation.

This research endeavor investigated the possibility to combine the visual advantages of both graphical schedule visualization methods, the Linked Gantt Charts (LGC) and Flowline graphs (FLG), derived from the activity-based and location-based scheduling systems, to help resolve some of their shortcomings by capitalizing on their combined strengths. In order to accomplish the goal of the research, a graphical representation system that combines these two scheduling visualization methods, LGC and FLG, is developed. Afterwards, the research attempted to empirically validate the ability of the proposed tool to visually communicate and combine logical and spatial relationships between scheduled activities. This is compared to comprehending the same information by looking at a stand-alone LGC or FLG. The accuracy and time, of deciphering various details of a sample project schedule, are used as parameters to evaluate the proposed scheduling visualization tool, and compare it to the existing LGC and FLG systems. The Hybrid Graphical Representation (HGR) is the tool developed by this research to combine Linked Gantt Chart bars from the activity-based scheduling approach, and flow-lines from the location-based scheduling approach. The HGR concept is founded on the basic idea that both LGC and FLG share a common X-axis, Time. The only difference is in a LGC the Activities are listed on the Y-axis, while the FLG shows Locations on the Y-axis. This research proposed adding a third dimension to the FLG, listing the project Activities on a Z-axis. Viewing the HGR 3D graph from the top, the user will observe the Gantt bars with Time on the X-axis and the Activities listed on the Z-axis. Observing the schedule from the front view, the user will see the flow-lines developed from the location-based scheduling approach with Locations on the Y-axis and Time on the X-axis. After conducting a series of online surveys measuring the time and accuracy of using a prototype HGR schedule, it was found that the users were able to reap the benefits of both scheduling approaches (LGC and FLG), and visually link and communicate information concerning the activities' logical relationships and spatial relationships. However, it took the participants a relatively longer time to achieve that higher accuracy utilizing the HGR tool.

Forming positive teacher-student relationships with students has been identified as a protective factor for students. However, many teachers struggle to form and maintain a positive relationship with students diagnosed with an emotional disturbance. It is essential that teachers have tools to help build and maintain positive teacher-student relationships.

This study focused on investigating licensed special education teachers that have taught seventh through twelve grade students with emotional disturbances. Out of the nine individuals who were sent the survey, all nine participants completed it. The survey was conducted to identify common negative behaviors and to identify what strategies teachers would like more information about to help them form positive teacher-student relationships. The survey consisting of short answer questions, multiple choice questions, yes or no questions, and questions that ask them to explain their answers.

The findings from the literature review and the survey data supported a need for a handbook to be created in order to inform special education teachers of ways to develop and maintain positive teacher-student relationships with students diagnosed with an emotional disturbance. Strategies are included in the handbook for teachers to reduce negative behaviors with students diagnosed with an emotional disturbance.

Rice is nowadays very important not only for Vietnamese people but for supporting as food to poorest people all over the world. In fact, Vietnam is one of top countries in rice production as well as rice export. However, there are little foreign people who knows about Vietnamese rice, and that the price in Vietnam is lower than its of Thailand. This is because there are no brand names for all kinds of Vietnamese rice in the international market. The objective of this article is to measure the relationship between brand equity dimensions which are brand awareness, perceived quality, brand loyalty and brand association with perceived value, customer satisfaction and post-purchasing intention to build strong brand for Vietnamese aromatic rice in the domestic market. This survey was conducted in summer occasion, 2012 at Long An province, Vietnam country with 29 questions to ask 500 people who have well-knowledge or related to rice information. Finally, there were 210 questionnaires for using to analyze and SPSS method (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) was used to test 5 hypotheses following the concept of research model. The results showed that all hypotheses were supported. It found that, quality of rice is a key driver to build strong brand in the Vietnamese aromatic rice industry and following drivers are brand awareness, brand loyalty and brand association, respectively. Moreover, understanding clearly the perception and satisfaction as well as intention of customers are so vital for building a strong brand. Implications for managers are discussed in detail below.

For this study, we would discuss the relationships of Workload, Work-Life Balance and Job Performance for employees, and adopted Communicating Media as a Moderating Variable. The travel industry practitioners were taken as the research subjects and send out questionnaires for surveying. Using the statistical package software SPSS20.0 was adopted to analyze the 343 valid copies of questionnaire. According to the research results, (1) Workload have partially effects on Job Performance;(2) Workload have partially effects on Work-Life Balance;(3) Work-Life Balance have partially positive effects on Job Performance;(4) Communicating Media cause partially disturbance between Workload and Job Performance;(5) Communicating Media cause partially disturbance between Workload and Work-Life Balance;(6) Communicating Media cause partially disturbance between Work-Life Balance and Job Performance;(7) Work-Life Balance didn’t have any mediation effect between Workload and Job Performance. This demonstrates that the selection of Communication Media occupies a certain degree of influence to improve employee’s performance. It is hoped that the result of this study could be used as a reference for practical or theoretical in the future.

Under the influence of globalization and market liberalization, textile manufacturers are no longer only threatened by local competitors, but also face challenges from all over the world. In order to survive in this highly competitive market, traditional transactional marketing approach has proved inadequate, and many manufacturers have begun to adapt the relationship marketing approach to the current rapidly changing business environment. However, it will be very costly for manufacturers to implement relationship marketing for all customers, and more resources should be invested in their “key customers”. Although a lot of foreign literature has focused on how to manage key customers, there is relatively little domestic concern on this topic. The textile industry was once an important force in Taiwan's post-war economic recovery and of Taiwan's export industry as well. However, as the rise of labor cost and currencies appreciation, many textile players move to other developing counties. In such a changing environment, how to find key customers and establish long-term cooperative relationships with key customers is a problem that enterprises need to face. Therefore, this study selected a successful Taiwanese dyeing manufacturer as the case study object. Through in-depth interviews with the manufacturer, literature review and theoretical analysis tools (4C Strategic Marketing Analysis Model), the results present how Taiwanese companies can establish long-term and stable relationships with key customers in global market. This study anticipates that the research results will provide the strategic thinking that Taiwanese companies should have when managing key customers, enabling them to occupy a stronger position in global market. In short, companies needs to explore the real needs of their key accounts through long-term relationships, and improve products and service continually. Those accumulated experience can inversely provide companies with new opportunity of discovering new key accounts and building up new relationship.

abstract: The current study is the first qualitative investigation aimed solely at understanding what it means to communicate conditional forgiveness in serious romantic relationships. Conditional forgiveness is forgiveness that has been offered with the stipulation that the errant behavior cease. It is a provocative topic because some argue genuine forgiveness is not conditional, but recent discoveries that have associated its use with severe transgressions and relational deterioration suggest it is a critical site for investigation. This inductive analysis of open-ended data from 201 anonymous surveys identified both distinctions between and intersections of conditional forgiveness, forgiveness, and reconciliation. A relational dialectics analysis also revealed that reconcilable-irreconcilable was the overarching tension for conditional forgivers and six additional tensions also were also discovered: individual identity-couple identity, safety-risk, certainty-uncertainty, mercy-justice, heart-mind, and expression-suppression. Of particular intrigue, the current analysis supports the previous discovery of implicit conditional forgiveness--suppressing conditions, sometimes in response to physical and substance abuse. Ultimately, the current analysis contributes to the enduring conversation aimed at understanding the communication and pursuit of forgiveness and reconciliation. It addresses one of the basic instincts and paradoxes of existing with others--the balance between vulnerability and protection.
