In the Indonesian language course, communication can be included in the area of speaking and writing. To carry out effective communication, the stages must be carried out, namely fact finding, planning, communicating, and evaluation. The purpose of this research is to describe the concept map of effective communication material based on powerful words. This research method uses qualitative research methods with data sources in the form of books by Erwin Parengkuan et al. entitled Talk-inc Points published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Trianto's book entitled Designing an innovative-progressive learning model published by KencanaPrenada Media Group. The data analysis carried out by researchers is as follows: (1) data reduction (2) displaying data by compiling relevant data, (3) drawing conclusions to get a meaning that scattered symptoms have deep meaning. The results of this study indicate that the use of powerful words in the preparation of effective communication materials produces a concept map for effective communication materials. Making a concept map for effective communication material becomes easier to learn and understand, that in effective communication there are four stages that must be done, namely fact finding, planning, communicating, and evaluation. Key words: effective communication; material preparation; powerful words

The research aimed to investigate the English proficiency level, what English conversation materials are needed, and what obstacles hawkers face in Mandalika Special Economy Zone when communicating with foreign tourists. This study utilizes a qualitative research paradigm with a descriptive approach; this study paints a comprehensive picture of the language abilities of Mandalika's hawkers, the materials of English conversation needed by hawkers, and the hawkers' obstacles when communicating with foreign tourists. Methods of collecting data consist of interviews, documentation, and observation. Some steps to analyze the data collected are data condensation, data display, verification, concluding, and data validity. Findings reveal a diverse spectrum of English proficiency levels among hawkers, ranging in primary and intermediate proficiency levels. Specifically, from 20 hawkers as research subjects, 13 hawkers exhibit a basic level of proficiency, while seven hawkers demonstrate intermediate-level skills. The assessment of English proficiency level is based on three crucial aspects that the hawkers always use namely understanding of English communication, non-verbal communication strategies employed by the hawkers, and vocabulary usage. These materials vary depending on the type of goods hawkers sell, highlighting the importance of tailored language resources. This research found 4 (four) crucial materials or topics to be mastered when communicating with foreign tourists: greetings and welcoming, describing specialties, providing personal/additional information, and discussing prices and payment. Additionally, the research uncovers obstacles faced by hawkers in their communication with foreign tourists. These challenges encompass hawkers' difficulty in explaining products, the low English proficiency of most Hawkers, and also language and vocabulary constraints of hawkers.

This study aims to examine the communication phenomenon of autistic children who are influenced by echolalia. One of the difficulties faced by autistic children in communicating, especially for children who experience severe barriers, is in mastering language and speech. This study uses a qualitative approach, in which the researcher describes the existing reality. The main informants in this study were a teacher at the Center for Emotional Focus Therapy and a teacher at the Behavior Therapy Center. The results showed that learning to communicate nonverbally with autistic children was more dominant by instilling language concepts through visual media by means of the teacher asking questions and the children answering things with their abilities. The teacher helps by showing visual pictures and asking autistic children to imitate them. As for verbal autistic children, both teachers emphasize adding or expanding vocabulary. The difficulty of autistic children in communicating is caused by having language disorders (verbal and nonverbal), even though language is the main communication medium. They often have difficulty communicating their desires both verbally (oral/speaking) and nonverbally (gestures/gestures and writing). Most of them can speak, using short sentences with simple vocabulary but their vocabulary is limited.

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) material to the critical thinking skills of Grade 10 students in Mathematics. The study used experimental research design by measuring the improvement on the performance of the students after the implementation of the researcher-made PBL material. It also used survey strategy to assess the acceptance of the students on the quality of the developed PBL material and correlated the results with the critical thinking skills before and after the use of the material using paper and pen test. Results revealed that learning experiences relate to inferring, communicating, and problem-solving. There is also significant relationship between learning outcomes and communicating and problem solving. Both effectiveness and efficiency and user-friendliness significantly relate to communicating learning experience while congruence relates significantly to all critical thinking skills. Thus, learners’ use of the PBL material increases their critical thinking skills as evidenced by the t–test results showing significantly different critical thinking skills before and after the use of PBL material. With the improved level of students’ critical thinking skills, the PBL material may be used as a supplementary in the delivery of the lessons in any subject area.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to communicating accurate information about vaccines because of the spread of misinformation. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) tried to reassure the public by communicating early on about the development and approval of COVID-19 vaccines. The EMA surveyed patients/consumers, healthcare professional organizations, and individual stakeholders, both at the EU level and in an Italian regional context. The objectives of the study were to see if the EMA’s core information materials were informative and well-understood and which communication channels were preferred by the public. The main findings showed that individual patients/consumers generally prefer to obtain information about COVID-19 vaccines from the internet or mass media, while organizations and individual healthcare professionals prefer to obtain information from national and international health authorities. Both at EU and local levels, participants had a good understanding of the key messages from regulators and found the materials useful and relevant. However, some improvements were recommended to the visual, text, and dissemination formats, including publishing more information on safety and using a more public-friendly language. Also, it was recommended to maintain the EMA’s approach of using media, stakeholder engagement, and web-based formats to communicate about COVID-19 vaccines. In conclusion, user-testing of proactive communication materials aimed to prebunk misinformation during a public health crisis helps to ensure that users understand the development and safety of novel vaccine technologies. This information can then be used as a basis for further evidence-based communication activities by regulators and public health bodies in an emergency context.

The purpose of this study is to identify and examine students' written mathematical communication skills in geometry subject over the last five years. This study is a literature review that was conducted by looking for and assessing similar previous studies. Several stages were completed in this research: (1) identifying articles that discussed communication skills in geometry material, (2) analyzing student mathematical communication abilities in working geometry questions, and (3) identifying similarities in mathematical communication inhibiting factors. According to the findings of the study's six articles, pupils had difficulties articulating ideas, mathematical circumstances in writing with visuals, and algebra, expressing ideas or mathematical situations in everyday life in algebraic form. Students' mathematical communication abilities have not achieved their full potential. Of course, there are numerous elements that influence this, including pupils' lack of desire to describe or comprehend the challenges or problems they confront. Students do not understand the fundamental principles involved in answering these questions. Some pupils also do not understand the context of the questions, resulting in carelessness factor in communicating it mathematically.

Mastery of English in the era of digital-based communication and technological advances is very important for students at Madrasah Aliyah of Darussalam Islamic Boarding School, Kepahiang, Bengkulu. Unfortunately, the students are used to memorizing grammar structures (Nahwu and Shorof) when learning Arabic, and when learning English, especially in reading skills, they are more likely to memorize and prioritize grammar than the flexibility to explore language and convey it into spoken and written language. Then, the teaching materials used by the English teacher as learning media in English subjects, especially in reading competence, tend to focus more on and burden students with grammatical patterns and do not develop students' skills in reading based on experience, the context of life, or their needs in communicating. This study aimed to assist in the implementation of the results of the development of English reading materials with Islamic materials and values for students at Islamic boarding schools based on Communicative Language Teaching to reduce the problems faced by students in learning English reading. This research used the Participatory Action Research method, which looks for something to link the research process to the process of social change. Through several stages of the activity cycle, starting with planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting, which are implemented on the subjects assisted by the students through activities planned in a participatory manner by stakeholders, teachers, and students, The results of the implementation of English teaching materials that occur can be concluded to be that students are able to identify problems in terms of the learning process, share experiences they have gained from previous learning activities, solve problems with solutions they consider strategic, slightly recognize that they need empowerment, and understand that every human being has the potential to be able to communicate in English, depending on their willingness to hone skills and improve abilities.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide novel insights into arts consumption behaviour and patterns of communication displayed by arts consumers using Peterson’s theoretical framework, and to identify differences in the use of communication channels across arts segments. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted an a priori market segmentation study, with two variables serving as segmentation criteria, namely, the frequency of and the variety of arts events attended. The authors tested for differences in communication patterns. Findings – Four segments were created: low-frequency univores, low-frequency multivores, high-frequency multivores and high-frequency omnivores. They differ in their communication patterns and online behaviours, including their online activities before and after attending arts events. Printed materials and e-mail newsletters were the most effective communication channel for raising awareness of all arts consumers. Research limitations/implications – Understanding these communication patterns can help arts marketers to increase the attendance of low-frequency segments and broaden the variety of arts events attended by the univore and multivore segments. The generalisability of the findings is limited as the survey was conducted among online Australian arts consumers only. Originality/value – The paper adds the dimension of arts consumption frequency to the taxonomy of omnivores and univores proposed by Peterson, which is based on the variety of consumed arts only. The paper contributes to communication and arts marketing literature by identifying key differences in communication patterns across segments of arts consumers and the most promising communication channels to engage them.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to understand how low-income, ethnically diverse, Medicaid recipients read, interpret and use culturally tailored health communications, specifically health plan report cards and health intervention/wellness program recruitment materials. Design/methodology/approach The paper reports two exploratory studies on message design. Researchers considered 12 focus groups for Study 1, consisting of 51 African-American, Hispanic and non-Hispanic White men and women who were enrolled in Medicaid and had a behavioral health diagnosis and a chronic disease. Researchers considered 22 focus groups for Study 2, consisting of 102 Hispanic, African-American and non-Hispanic White women enrolled in Medicaid. Findings The paper provides qualitative insights into how underserved populations interpret the visual and verbal aspects of health communications. Key findings include problems with cultural tailoring and monetary incentives for health improvement program participation, message components that show respect and are more likely to be read, how visuals can expand verbal messages and provide symbolic models and specifics on the desired image content. Research limitations/implications Because of the qualitative approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Thus, researchers suggest conducting quantitative studies to test these findings. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the development of powerful verbal and visual messaging for underserved populations. Additionally, the findings suggest a need to include emotional response in health communication theories and to incorporate visual communication theories in message design studies. Originality/value Research on health communication with underserved populations is limited, yet these populations have higher incidences of death and disability from disease. This paper fulfills a need to discover best health communication practices with underserved populations.

Despite the existing communication strategies and health information available online during the COVID-19 outbreak, the general public has found that some parts of the world got the lowest COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rates. Looking at the developmental dimension of communicating vaccine information, this paper gauges the underlying context and factors of the vaccine hesitation. This is to further assist the health information communicator to effectively craft strategies for public health. Interviews were administered as instruments of the study while the respondents were chosen through Simple Random Sampling. Thereafter, the data were analyzed by utilizing the Individual Differences Theory. As far as communication strategies are concerned, the Department of Health have found a high level of acceptance (47.2%) from the parent-respondents despite the vaccine hesitancy deeply rooted on the negative exposure to vaccine related to the dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia. Further, a significant relationship was established in the correlation between the use of social media and the age of the respondents (0.040*); poster and educational attainment (0.005**); poster and employment (0.018*); and seminar and educational attainment (0.011*), in communicating COVID-19 information. Following the framework for analysis, the exposure to COVID-19 vaccine messages leads to an attitude shift that changes the parent-respondents action towards the vaccination of their children. This study concludes that the exposure of parent-respondents to communication strategies and materials have been proven to be statistically significant factors and played a significant influence in the spread of COVID-19 vaccine information. Consequently, the use of social media as a source of information in rural communities was statistically low. This study inferred that there is a barrier in communicating health information for respondents who didn’t finish their studies and reside from rural areas whereas there is a lack of available communication materials with local context.

This paper focuses on the role of the structure of turns in quasi-synchronous text-based computer mediated-conversation. Prior research has found that interactants in this type of communication submit their messages in two ways: either as a long single message or as a sequence of shorter postings. We hypothesize that the latter strategy – called utterance splitting – facilitates communicating online both in terms of turn-taking (initiation of repairs and holding the floor) and sentence processing (predicting informational content and lowering entropy). To evaluate the hypothesis, an experiment in which naive participants interacted with a confederate writer was conducted. We found that although communicative success did not depend on the condition to which the participants were assigned, the conversations in which the confederate sent split utterances were, on average, shorter and re-quired less words to communicate the same intention.

Our research presents the results of experimental work of dialogical speech mastering during individual English lessons. After years of studying English language in a secondary school many students have various difficulties, both linguistic and psychological during communicating with native speakers. With the help of individual lessons, it is easier for teachers to adjust the learning process and fill in the gaps in the student’s communicative competence. One of the main conditions for organizing a dialogue is creating an atmosphere of trust and benevolence, freedom and mutual understanding. In addition to the traditional methods, rolebased communication, BYOD technology and a set of dialogized exercises for audio and video materials were used during one-to-one classes. The control test showed that students of the experimental group have a higher level of proficiency in dialogue skills.

Building marketing communications is certainly one of the important aspects that must be considered in doing business. However, in communicating also needed a good strategy to support this success. This is also driven by the times that make business people must be able to take advantage of communication facilities both through offline and online or commonly called digital marketing. The purpose of this study is to find out how the implementation of marketing communication strategies carried out by Branding.in as a creative digital agency in Samarinda to increase the number of clients and run digital marketing in an effort to build branding or promote clients' products/brands, as well as find out what are the supporting and inhibiting factors in Branding.in during marketing communications. This research was carried out with a qualitative approach method with data collection techniques carried out by interviews, observations, and documentation, as well as sampling techniques using purposive sampling with 3 informants. The data analysis technique of this study uses analysis techniques by Miles and Huberman, and the validity of the data uses triangulation. The results of this study show that Branding.in use elements of Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) which include advertising, sales promotion, personal selling, interactive marketing, and public relations. These five elements are indeed carried out but need to be maximized even more in the future. Then, Branding.in also applies the points of the 7P Service Marketing Mix consisting of product, place, promotion, price, people, physical evidence, and process as its marketing communication strategy. Then, in carrying out marketing communications, Branding.in have supporting factors consisting of brand and product quality, as well as inhibiting factors in terms of human resources (HR).

Subcentimeter wireless computers capable of interfacing physically with their environment and communicating with each other have progressed from concept to commercial reality in the past decade. Wireless sensor nodes are an exciting technology, as they provide a backbone to measure almost any quantity in a spatially disperse way, allowing time-synchronized correlations over meters or miles. Before these devices can be deployed to monitor and protect environments (such as grid power distribution systems, buildings, factories, or even the human body) for long periods of time, they need a power source. Environmental generation looks to be a promising method.

The article is devoted to the study of adolescent discourse in the linguopersonological aspect. The subject of the study is the linguistic and communicative-pragmatic characteristics of the discourse personality of a teenager. The object of the study is a set of linguistic means of implementing manipulative strategies and tactics by a teenager. A discourse personality is considered as a participant of certain communicative events, the communication scheme of which determines the choice of linguistic means – lexical, grammatical, stylistic. In the research quantitative, descriptive-comparative, contextual and situational-interpretative research methods were used. The article examines the role of the intention realized by a teenager in two discursive dyads while communicating with peers and with adults. The novelty of the study is determined by the fact that for the first time a study of communicative strategies and tactics of manipulative influence of adolescents in interaction with the environment is conducted on the material of television series. A discourse personality in television series is a reflection of a real teenager. As a result, it was found out that the behavior of a manipulative teenager is determined by gender parameters, as well as anchoring to the zone of discursive space. Dominant communicative strategies and tactics of a discourse personality of a teenager are the following: tactics of blackmail, verbal insinuation, threats. It seems promising to study typical discourse personalities in other types of communication, as well as a more detailed description of the gender aspect from the standpoint of gender linguistics.

This community-based participatory research (CBPR) project used a collaborative process to develop a culturally relevant workbook for parents of overweight children. We followed a mixed methods iterative process to assess clear communication using a CBPR approach. Materials were evaluated using readability tests, the Clear Communication Index (CCI), and the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM). In addition, we used surveys and focus groups to investigate parents’ perceptions and gather feedback from delivery staff using the workbook. While workbook materials maintained adequate grade reading levels, our iterative process and the use of CCI and SAM led to significant improvements in (a) clearly communicating the objectives of the program, (b) being culturally relevant, and (c) reaching a high satisfaction among users. These findings suggest that evaluative measures for written materials should move beyond readability and need to account for level of clarity and cultural appropriateness of messages. Furthermore, we found that that an iterative process to intervention’s material development using clear communication strategies while involving community members, parents, and research partners can lead to workbook materials that are culturally relevant to the target audience, and better communicate program objectives. Finally, this is a potentially generalizable process for improving clear communication of written health information materials.

AbstractHumankind and, in general, all life on earth, face a fundamental sustainability crisis. We have realized many decades ago that both our sources and our sinks on our planet are limited. International treaties have been adopted, panels have been formed and assessments have been published. Yet, almost all nations regularly fail to comply with their goals. Many potential barriers to swift actions exist, and sustainability in its many facets reveals complex interdependencies and rebounds. Humankind relies on an infrastructure in terms of energy supply, housing, and others, which take decades to change. At the same time, we face tipping points, which describe an irreversible acceleration of degradation of our fundamental life’s resources. This concerns not only the climate crisis, which is visible in so many nations with floods and heat waves and a surge of new temperature extremes and costs due to mitigation and adaptation. No, the problem also lies in a set of planetary limits, including a terrifying loss of agricultural soil, an increasing level of acidity in the oceans, enhanced nitridation, and loss of biodiversity and natural habitats. In this situation, it appears obvious, that scientists, meaning all scientists beyond our representatives in international panels, need to respond. We need to inform ourselves across the disciplines and disseminate available information into society. We need to spell out that a transformation of society is required combining technological advances and a change in lifestyle with a reduction in demand for our planet’s sources and sinks.

What Crumpling a Polychronic Materials map can reveal… is a reflection on the Research Through Design Conference that was held at Microsoft Research in Cambridge UK in 2015. It focuses on the issues involved in offering a design methodology as a collaborative experience within the environs of a research through design conference. In considering the use of an interactive research exercise, such as crumpling maps of materials and time to communicate tacit knowledge and the process of designing, this reflection explores some of the constraints involved both in communicating in conferences and the process of research through design itself.

Background Posterior communicating artery aneurysms are often associated with a high rupture risk. This study compares the differences in the rate of growth and morphological characteristics between growing posterior communicating artery aneurysms and other types of growing aneurysms. Materials and methods Thirteen patients with growing internal carotid artery aneurysms were scanned using Siemens 64 slice computed tomography scanners. Three patients had ophthalmic aneurysms, three had superior hypophyseal aneurysms and seven had posterior communicating artery aneurysms. Each aneurysm case had three distinct time points, with an average separation time of 1.3 ± 0.6 years. Annual aneurysm dimensional growth, annual volume growth, annual increase in surface area, size ratio, aspect ratio, and non-sphericity index were analysed. Results Posterior communicating artery aneurysms demonstrated significantly higher annual increases in dimensional growth, volume and surface area when compared to other internal carotid artery aneurysms. Posterior communicating artery aneurysms also demonstrated a significantly higher increase in aspect ratio, size ratio and lower non-sphericity index. Discussion Posterior communicating artery aneurysms had significantly greater growth per year when compared to other types of internal carotid artery aneurysms, and had different morphological characteristics.

Abstract Background : The posterior communicating artery is the main collateral channel between internal carotid artery and verteberobasilar system. There are considerable variations in the posterior communicating artery which have both surgical and endovascular implications. Objectives: The present study aims to study the variations of posterior communicating artery such as hypoplasia and absence of the artery. The incidences of the three types of configurations of posterior communicating artery were also noted. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in 60 randomly selected brain specimens fixed in 10% formalin for 10 days in the department of Anatomy. The posterior communicating artery was carefully dissected and observed. Photographs were taken to document the observations. Results: The Posterior Communicating Artery was normal in 13 circles unilaterally [21.7%-Rt.l3%andLt.9.7%] and bilaterally in 30 circles [50%]. It was hypoplastic in 15% of circles unilaterally and in 10% of circles bilaterally. It was absent in 6.7% of circles unilaterally. Of the three configurations of posterior communicating artery, adult configuration was more common. The other two variant configurations, fetal and transitional were observed in 15% of cases unilaterally. Conclusions: An intact circle of Willis is essential for the stable and constant blood flow to the encephalon. Any changes in its morphology may condition the appearance and the severity of syndromes of vascular insufficiency in adults.

Semiconductors play important role in communication applications right from allowing solar panels to harvest light energy along with acting as the receiver elements of light‐based communication network. These self‐powered nodes allow network of communicating devices to be assembled within the Internet of things, wireless sensor network, mobile/vehicular ad-hoc network and many more potential applications. After initial uses of binary and ternary semiconductors, the research paradigm has now shifted towards quaternary and pentanary semiconductors. These classes of semiconductors are playing dominant role in communication devices because of their flexibility to get easily fabricated by changing the composition of their elemental materials. This paper deals with such novel semiconductors whose properties would certainly leverage the future direction of research in wireless communication systems.

Wireless Sensor Networks are very convenient to monitor structures or even materials, as in McBIM project (Materials communicating with the Building Information Modeling). This project aims to develop the concept of “communicating concretes,” which are concrete elements embedding wireless sensor networks, for applications dedicated to Structure Health Monitoring in the construction industry. Due to applicative constraints, the topology of the wireless sensor network follows a chain-based structure. Node batteries cannot be replaced or easily recharged, it is crucial to evaluate the energy consumed by each node during the monitoring process. This area has been extensively studied leading to different energy models to evaluate energy consumption for chain-based structures. However, no simple, practical, and analytical network energy models have yet been proposed. Energy evaluation models of periodic data collection for chain-based structures are proposed. These models are compared and evaluated with an Arduino XBee–based platform. Experimental results show the mean prediction error of our models is 5%. Realizing aggregation at nodes significantly reduces energy consumption and avoids hot-spot problem with homogeneous consumptions along the chain. Models give an approximate lifetime of the wireless sensor network and communicating concretes services. They can also be used online by nodes for a self-assessment of their energy consumptions.

The article studies the causes of conflict situations between a doctor and a patient in the communication, associated with the problems of using the language code and the compliance of communicative and ethical norms. The research focuses on conflict-generating factors caused by the violation of the patient’s right to information about the state of health, which include, in particular, the volume and details of such information, as well as the forms it was provided. Methods of verbalizing the information about the patient’s health are discussed, taking into account the requirements of accessibility and sensitivity. The author examines problematic situations caused by the «non-linguistic» nature of legal regulation in the field of doctor-patient communication. The aim of the study is to identify conflict-generating factors of communication in the medical field, which lead to a violation of not only ethical, but also legal norms of communication between doctors and patients. The empirical base was formed by questioning the patients. The study also used blogosphere, social media materials, and personal interviews with patients. The analysis of sociolinguistic data made it possible to identify 4 conflict-generating factors: 1) the availability of information; 2) volume (details) of information, 3) delicacy / indelicacy; 4) the quality of the doctor’s feedback for the patient. As a result of the study, conclusions were drawn that allow to linguistically interpret the communicative failure that arose in the process of communicating with the doctor. This gives reason to develop criteria for communicative violations that are potentially conflict ones and have legal effect

The world is moving towards alternative medicine and behavioural alteration for treating, managing, and preventing chronical diseases. In the last few decades, diagrammatical models have been extensively used to describe and understand the behaviour of biological organisms (biological agents) due to their simplicity and comprehensiveness. However, these models can only offer a static picture of the corresponding biological systems with limited scalability. As a result, there is an increasing demand to integrate formalism into more dynamic forms that can be more scalable and can capture complex time-dependent processes. In this paper, we introduce a generic disease model called Communicating Stream X-Machine Disease Model (CSXMDM), which has been developed based on X-Machine and Communicating X-Machine theories. We conducted an experiment on modelling an actual disease using a case study of Type II Diabetes. The results of the experiment demonstrate that the proposed CSXMDM is capable of modelling chronic diseases.

Background. Effective communication is essential for cancer care therefore a communication skills training program was developed by the Lithuanian Association of Psychosocial Oncology. This study aims to identify the efficacy of the new program designed for Lithuanian specialists. Materials and methods. Self-report questionnaires for health care professionals were designed. Surveys were based on three topics – stress, confidence level, and personal opinion about the training and ability to apply learned communication skills. 88(67.2%) respondents completed the questionnaire. Results. Stress: 38.6% of respondents indicated that they usually experience stress while communicating with oncology patients or their relatives; Confidence level: 61.4% of participants agreed that their level of confidence improved after trainings. 83.0% of participants agreed that the establishment of a connection with patients and their relatives improved, but requires further development. The participants’ personal opinion about specific aspects of the communication skills training was evaluated as well. It was found that women are more likely to think that their skill of empathy had developed, but still needed to be improved, while men believed that their empathy had not changed, or stated that it had developed and needed no further improvement (p = 0.003). Conclusions. The study found improvements in participants’ confidence (61.4%) and specific skills while communicating with oncology patients (75.0–90.9%). Health care professionals evaluated the program as well and very well (86.4–92.1%). The Lithuanian communication skills training program is appropriate to use to enhance the quality of cancer care.

AbstractCommunicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformations (CBPFM) are extremely rare. We present a complex case of type IB CBPFM with esophageal atresia and distal tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TOF), duodenal atresia/annular pancreas (DA/AP), and intestinal malrotation who underwent primary repair for EA/TOF on day 3. Bilious aspirates on day 8 prompted an upper gastrointestinal (GI) contrast revealing a duodenal obstruction and communication between the right lung lower lobe and the esophagus (T8-T9 level). DA/AP and malrotation were repaired by a gastrojejunostomy and Ladd's procedure. A repeat contrast swallow identified a 2nd communication from the esophagus into the right lower lobe (T5-T6 level) raising the suspicion of a recurrent TOF. Computed tomography (CT) thorax confirmed above findings with an anomalous blood supply to right lung. An exploratory thoracotomy identified a three-lobed lung. However, the lower lobe was enlarged and connected in two separate locations to the esophagus. The child recovered after the disconnection of the esophageal connections and partial right lower lobectomy. CBPFM are extremely rare anomalies requiring a high index of suspicion, use of an upper GI contrast series, and CT scans for diagnosis. The treatment of choice is resection of the affected lung and disconnection of the esophageal communications.
