Sharp movements in crude oil prices and their impact on other commodities have renewed interest in the assessment of dynamic interactions between commodity futures markets. This chapter examines this topic by investigating the intensity and direction of volatility transmission across three major classes of commodities, including agricultural products (corn, coffee, and soybeans), energy (crude oil and gas), and metals (copper, gold, and silver). Overall, the evidence suggests that important volatility episodes and fluctuations exist across major commodity markets; the total cross-market spillovers are limited until the onset of financial crisis of 2007–2008. As the crisis intensified, so too did the commodity volatility spillovers, with substantial stress carrying over from the energy and metal markets to others. These findings are important in understanding the level and transmission mechanism of risk across commodity futures markets and are relevant to regulators in formulating policies to tackle excessive volatility, particularly during turbulent periods.

This concluding chapter brings together the evidence gathered in the ten case studies. It concentrates on two key questions. First, what ignites growth within a country? Then once growth is ignited how is it maintained? The framework highlights that how the political settlement and rent space interact determines the deals space in which elites operate. Feedback loops, both positive and negative, exist within the case studies analysed. Transnational factors such as commodity price movements on international markets, the role of foreign donors, foreign direct investment, and neighbourhood effects can all have a significant impact on transitions between growth episodes. Implications for development policy are considered.

It interrogates global patterns of property formation, the dispossessions property markets enact, and the popular movements to halt the growing waves of evictions and land grabs. This collection brings together original research on urban, rural, and peri-urban India; rapidly urbanizing China and Southeast Asia; resource expropriation in Africa and Latin America; and the neoliberal urban landscapes of North America and Europe. Through a variety of perspectives, the book finds resonances between local stories of land's fictional powers and global visions of landed property's imagined power to automatically create value and advance national development. The book unpacks the dynamics of land commodification across a broad range of political, spatial, and temporal settings, exposing its simultaneously contingent and collective nature. It advances understanding of the politics of land while also contributing to current debates on the intersections of local and global, urban and rural, and general and particular.

This chapter revisits the experience of land reforms in Kerala and West Bengal to provide a comparative analysis of the impact of left reformism on the nature of capital accumulation in these two states. The chapter builds on a conceptual framework combining a contemporary Marxist reading of the agrarian question and the theoretical justification of land reforms from a developmentalist perspective. The analysis in the chapter shows that land reforms were not able to generate a process of inclusive industrial development in either state. In Kerala, land reforms did not revitalize agricultural production primarily because of a powerful trade union movement leading to overpricing of labor and resistance to technological upgrading while in West Bengal the sharp increase in agricultural productivity could not be transmitted to dynamic process of capital accumulation in the larger economy. This is interpreted as a disarticulation of the accumulation problematic of the agrarian question.

He mentions the key areas where the disparity is most evident—in international structure; global monetary system that creates imbalances in distribution of credit; in commodity trading, where developing countries are not given a fair price of their products; in case of free trade, where there is restriction on free movement of labour. He urges the developing countries to come together to demand a re-structuring of international institutions for economic and intellectual liberation and independence of the Third World.

This chapter discusses the continued decline of amateurism in the late twentieth century. As professional sport grew in popularity, the lines between amateurism and professionalism blurred further. An expanding global media apparatus, in concert with avaricious corporations and shrewd marketing agencies, transformed professional athletes into global sporting icons. The Olympic Movement faced higher competition. Although the fusion of nationalism and Citius, Altius, Fortius made the Olympic Games an attractive commodity, the Internatioal Olympic Commitee's eligibility code—and the forced prohibition of some of the world's leading athletes—dampened the spectacle. Public condemnations and accusations of hypocrisy damaged the Olympic brand. With multimillion dollar television broadcasting deals at stake, Olympic officials displayed an unwillingness to make the necessary sacrifices to preserve amateurism.

This chapter seeks to elucidate the relations of U.S.-listed global commodity futures, the business cycle, and stocks and bonds of emerging markets. It shows that global investors poised to benefit from investing in emerging market securities can concurrently learn from and better understand the dynamic intermarket relations when establishing such trading strategies. Investment in emerging markets can enhance the performance and sturdiness of an equity or bond portfolio strategy. Evidence lends support to the conjecture that a subtle contemporaneous and occasionally trailing effect exerted by the movement of global commodities on the business cycle exists. Global commodities also affect equity and bond market dynamics. The evidence also reveals differences in terms of economic significance and magnitude among selected emerging nations and across various commodities.

How can a single tree species affect human projects on the scale of empires and nations? Rubber and the Making of Vietnam explores this question for the rubber tree in Vietnamese history. Dating back to the nineteenth-century transplantation of a latex-producing tree from the Amazon to Southeast Asia, rubber production has wrought monumental changes worldwide. During a turbulent Vietnamese past, rubber has transcended capitalism and socialism, colonization and decolonization, becoming a key commodity around which life and history have flowed. Synthesizing archival material in English, French, and Vietnamese, this book narrates how rubber trees came to dominate the material and symbolic landscape of French Indochina and postcolonial Vietnam, structuring the region’s environments of agriculture, health, and violence. Once established, private and state-run plantations became landscapes of oppression, resistance, and modernity. Agronomists, medical doctors, laborers, and leaders of independence movements form part of this narrative as they struggled over various visions of labor in nature and the nature of labor. Mosquitoes and plasmodia also play a part in this narrative as they helped spread malaria among Vietnamese who planted and tended rubber trees. Rather than a human-centered past, this book adopts an ecological perspective as it tells twentieth-century Vietnamese history starting with the view from a rubber tree and branching outwards in multiple directions. In other words, this book taps the rubber tree to examine the entanglements of nature, culture, and politics and demonstrates how the demand for rubber has impacted nearly a century of war and peace in Vietnamese society.

This chapter focuses on the Obama Administration's International Strategy for Cyberspace which, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared, constituted nothing less than “a new foreign policy imperative.” It examines several interlocked U.S. Executive Branch initiatives that were organized during the digital depression in an effort to affirm and bolster U.S. policy for the extraterritorial internet. The Department of State's contribution to this policy program was to project a refurbished rhetoric of human rights centered on what Secretary Clinton in 2010 pronounced as “internet freedom.” The chapter considers the role played by Google in the State Department's cyberspace initiative, which signaled the United States's determination to project power over critical internet resources and over the extraterritorial internet, primarily in an attempt to secure the continued, untrammeled movement of data throughout networked commodity chains.

This chapter examines the impact of the 2007–08 global financial crisis on the regulation of private investment funds in the United States and in the European Union. It begins with a review of Dodd-Frank, which can be seen as the U.S. movement towards the international consensus that private fund managers should be directly regulated by the national financial regulator. It then considers Dodd-Frank’s repeal of the so-called ‘private adviser exemption’ previously found in the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, along with its exemption of ‘foreign private advisers’ from registration. It also explains the distinction between ‘US advisers’ and ‘non-US advisers’, Dodd-Frank’s compliance requirements for various types of investment advisers, and Rule 204(b)-1, jointly approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under the Investment Advisers Act. This chapter links the themes of cannibals, pirates, and colonial conquest of islands to the consumption of literary texts as a commodity embedded within paradigms of domination and control. It specifically explores Comme un vol de papang' by Monique Agénor and La montagne des signaux by Marie-Thérèse Humbert, and relates these texts to questions of island specificity as base for discussion. The reading of Agénor's Comme un vol de papang' underscores the movement and dispersal of peoples within the Indian Ocean, and more precisely on the formation of the Afro-Malagasy diaspora in the Reunion Island. The reading of Humbert's La montagne des signaux explores the representation of the tourist as a power-hungry conqueror whose appetite for spectacle and illusion can only be sated by appropriation and more appropriation. Through an exploration of women writers, the chapter also highlights the gendering of the desert-island story as a male-centered text.

This chapter applies spatial practice theory to the intersections of power relations, social spaces, and embodied performance in the dance culture of Great Depression-era Harlem. Tracing the movement in black communities away from signifiers of ethnicity toward social-class-based hierarchies, it shows how ethnicized tropes have been used to exoticize and commodify black identity and to create the American black/white racial binary. This strategy has its roots in the marketing labels of the slave trade and the performative tropes of minstrel shows, and it continued in the floor shows of the Cotton Club and other “jungle alley” nightclubs in Harlem. The chapter charts the trajectory of the Savoy Ballroom’s drift from an upscale, dignified dance palace to an incubator for the lindy hop and Harlem’s other popular dance innovations. It argues that considering dance demands a model of ethnicity that creates more space for individual agency and processes of self-definition.
