Home in May 1868, the editor likely anticipated letters about the legitimacy of spiritualism—a topic of considerable media attention. Instead, he received multiple letters scrutinizing the discourse of scientific authority as asserted by its most renowned figures. This article analyzes that month-long sequence of letters and commentary to parse the criticism of authority on the unexpected grounds of language itself, illuminating how PMG correspondents resisted the reification of scientific objectivity by suggesting that even esteemed scientific investigators conveyed personal prejudice.

With the onset of America’s involvement in World War II in December 1941, there was a marked upswing in the popularity of all patriotic music, including the “Marines’ Hymn.” This article provides insight into the story of the “Marines’ Hymn” during World War II, including the increase in demand for published sheet music editions and the numerous suggestions of new lyrics to reflect the wartime experiences of Marines around the globe. It also highlights the role played by Marine Corps leadership in encouraging the hymn’s popularity, both at home and in the directives given to their combat correspondents reporting from the front.

This study highlights how military-press relations evolved in the 19th century towards institutionalising press accreditation during the armed conflicts with the aim of gaining the public trust and promoting the reputation of military organisations by managing the information release to audiences. A special focus is on the nascent press accreditation practices used by the military when interacting with correspondents sent by European and North American publications to cover, first-hand, the Eastern Question events unfolding on the battlefields of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), in which Romania fought to win its national independence. The study reveals the crystallisation of Public Relations techniques and procedures in wartime – press officers’ appointment, written regulations on the terms and conditions for the press accreditation, ground rules for correspondents’ access to press briefings, interviews and documentation activities at combat units as members of press pools or as embedded journalists. These practices are enshrined nowadays in the Public Relations policies on media relations, and their emergence deserves better recognition in the history of communication sciences.

War journalism is becoming increasingly dangerous. Journalists who define their careers by longevity in war zones have a lifetime prevalence of PTSD similar to frontline combat veterans. Local journalists can also confront grave danger, but unlike foreign correspondents, they work and live in dangerous places. They too have rates of PTSD and depression that well exceed that seen in the general population. Local journalists whose families are targeted are particularly vulnerable in this regard. Journalists who chose these dangerous career paths differ cognitively from their colleagues who have chosen less adventurous careers, most notably when it comes to decisions that entail risk. The ability to manage anxiety and fear in extreme situations may to a degree be modulated by epigenetic factors.

The article highlights the problems of the legal status of journalists and their protection during the war on the basis of international legal acts. Attention is focused on the norms of the Geneva Convention of 1949 and its Additional Protocols, which regulate the status of journalists during armed conflicts. Attention is focused on the fact that it is necessary to distinguish two categories of journalists: war correspondents and independent journalists, which are considered separately, and war correspondents are protected by the armed forces, and independent journalists do not have such special protection. It is noted that international humanitarian law considers journalists working in areas of armed conflict as civilians subject to the protection by Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols. Deficiencies in the protection of journalists in the context of considering them as ordinary civilians are pointed out. The possibility of creating a single special international legal act is being considered, which will determine the legal status of journalists during their stay in combat zones, taking into account their important mission of conveying true information to society and the functions they perform at the same time. Attention is focused on the need to identify journalists, provide assistance and protection by states, ensure free movement of journalists and respect the confidentiality of their sources. The importance of investigating cases of violence or deaths of journalists was emphasized.

Quality shows ability and reliability in carrying out tasks, especially in the security sector work unit. Quality indicators are a must, because in carrying out the task of maintaining security there is a risk of loss of life or the integrity of the country. This study aims to see the effect of professional training and education on improving the quality of competence of Indonesian soldiers. To show that there is influence, a quantitative research method is used on the basis of data disclosure. A total of 80 marines from the headquarters of the Indonesian National Armed Forces who became research correspondents. Data analysis using statistical regression test. Research data was collected through a purposive method by distributing questionnaires. The results of the study show that there is a strong allegation that the quality of competence increases significantly if soldiers receive professional and educational training programs. This means that the quality of soldier competence needs to be strengthened both in terms of technical ability and knowledge, so that soldiers have a comprehensive level of combat intelligence, encompassing technical intelligence, intellectual intelligence and mental maturity.

The work is devoted to the study of narrative sources about the battles of the 108th tank division of the Red Army west of Trubchevsk on August 30 – 31, 1941. Central attention is paid to the memoirs of the famous Russian weapons designer M. T. Kalashnikov, who took part in this battle as part of the 216th tank regiment. In the work, fragments of M. T. Kalashnikov's memoirs, as well as memories of other participants in the events, on the one hand, and documentary sources, on the other, are subjected to comparative analysis. For example, among the documentary evidence one can name the log of combat operations of the 108th tank division, reports of its headquarters from September 4 and 6, 1941. Among the narrative evidence, the most important are the memoirs of L. G. Katz, an ordinary tankman of the 216th tank regiment, and the future general of tank forces, Soviet Union Hero I. N. Shkadov, in 1941 – chief of reconnaissance of the regiment. In addition, a number of memories of front-line correspondents are used. The author comes to the conclusion that, despite the fact that from a chronological point of view, M. T. Kalashnikov’s memoirs are completely unreliable, in detail they quite accurately reflect the reconstructed events of August 30-31. In particular, almost any specific combat episode of these memoirs can be compared with any specific message in the documents. In addition, the designer’s memories practically do not contradict the memoirs of other participants in the events. Moreover, as the experience of comparing narrative monuments has shown, M. T. Kalashnikov’s memoirs are the most voluminous and detailed among them. It should be recognized that no scientific reconstruction of the battles of the 108th Panzer Division is possible without taking into account this monument.

The role of journalists in satisfying citizens’ right to free access to socially important information in war conditions is highlighted. The importance to inform the public about the progress of the military campaign is emphasized because it provides the civilians’ emotional and volunteer support for the army and military, political, and economic decisions. The history of the emergence of “embedded journalism” and the experience of implementing this type of journalism in Ukraine are analyzed. The author focuses on the ambivalent nature of “embedded journalism” from the point of view of researchers and practitioners. The legal basis for the journalists’ activities in hot spots is outlined, in particular the restrictions introduced after the full-scale offensive of the Russian Federation on Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The challenges for Ukrainian journalists regarding the implementation of the practice of “embedded journalism” and the completion of this project in Ukraine are pointed out. The author considers the specificities of the military correspondents’ activities and the recommendations developed by Ukrainian journalists and media experts regarding how to behave and how to communicate with the military and how to resolve conflict situations in the combat zone.

Although television conflict reporting has usually been limited by risks to journalists’ safety, the death throes of Baathist Iraq in April 2003 provided viewers with a unique opportunity to vicariously witness the fall of a large modern city. Yet if the iconic moment of the Second Gulf War came when Saddam Hussein’s statue in Firdos Square was toppled, then it was at the expense of another image event which unfolded earlier a short distance away. Because the US military’s violent destruction of the equestrian statue close to the ‘Hands of Victory’ monument better encapsulates the conflict than the sterile bloodless ‘cakewalk’ description it’s usually labelled with. This article shows how the tale of these two statues is also in some ways the tale of two Fox News correspondents, and how an alienation from military service conditions and methods can leave reporters and their audiences with no sense of what the participants on their screens endured in order to reach Baghdad; or what they had also inflicted upon others. In retrospect, the circumstances which allowed one Fox reporter to provide the world with what might have been its first taste of live, unedited combat footage seem more like an accidental success than the result of systemic best practices. Especially when this network and even its most credible host remain committed to ensuring a particular partisan perspective dominates all their broadcasts.

This article examines Kodak photographs made by participant soldiers and photographer–correspondents working in the field for the illustrated press during the concluding phase of the 1883–1898 campaign to defeat an Islamist insurgency in the Egyptian Sudan, whose leaders sought to create a regional caliphate. It explores how the presence of early generation portable cameras impacted on image making practices on British operations, and how aspects of campaign experience were subsequently represented in Kodak-derived photograph albums. With reference to graphic art and commercial photographic practices associated with Nile tourism and recent military activity in the Nile valley after 1882, the author argues, firstly, that the representation of combat was transformed by handheld photography and, secondly, that in the context of photographs of logistical activity and leisure, picturesque aesthetics were occluded by a ‘documentary’ mode of representation synonymous with the increasingly industrial nature of Western armed conflict. The article also calls attention to how photomechanical reproduction made possible the widespread availability of affordable albums for a public here identified as the readership of the illustrated general interest weeklies. More generally, the sheer number of photographs resulting from the use of Kodak technology prompted a more fluid use of montage-like techniques by album makers, for public and private use, including text and multiple image combinations, to build more dynamic visual narratives of experience on campaign than had hitherto been possible.

This paper addresses the descriptions of single combats and tournaments with participation from the emperor as described by the Late Byzantine writers (George Akropolites, John Kantakouzenos, George Pachymeres, Nikephoros Gregoras). The research is aimed to define the features of the use of stories about the participation of Byzantine emperors in single combats on the battlefield, trial combats, jousts (gaming combats), and collective faceoffs (tournaments) in the historical writings of Late Byzantine authors and to observe the authors’ value judgments about these cases. It has been taken into account that the Byzantine historians often applied traditional rhetorical models, imitated the language and style of ancient Greek and Roman authors, and used the allusions to the texts of the Holy Scripturee, and the works of other historians in their written works. It has been established that the descriptions of the eagerness of Michael Palaiologos to clear his name by judicial duel in connection with accusation of treason (1253) allowed Pachymeres to present Michael in a favorable light and deflect an accusation of treason from him. It has been shown that the writers used the stories regarding the participation of emperors in single combat on the battlefield (or their eagerness to participate) and in sports games (“jousts” and “tournaments”) to present the rulers in positive or negative way. Late Byzantine writers paid special attention to the characterization of manifestations of courage and other military virtues of Byzantine emperors, and to the correspondence or inconsistency of their actions with the imperial dignity. The influence of the imperial propaganda on the works of the authors, as well as the reflection in them of some features of the self-consciousness of the Byzantine aristocracy of that time, has been established.

The functionality and purpose of combat wheeled vehicles (CWV) models are determined by both the requirements of the armed forces and the financial and technical capabilities of military equipment manufacturers. This leads to a discrepancy between the technical characteristics of the CWV model and its combat purpose. For the classification of CWV, an approach is proposed that consists of using generalized indicators that characterize the combat properties of CWV models, which allows establishing a correspondence between the technical characteristics of CWV models and their functional purpose, provides an opportunity to develop rational protection options and to justify specific technical solutions to increase the level of survivability of CWV models within groups.

AbstractGraphs are a central object of study in various scientific fields, such as discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science and network science. These graphs are typically studied using combinatorial, algebraic or probabilistic methods, each of which highlights the properties of graphs in a unique way. Here, we discuss a novel approach to study graphs: the simplex geometry (a simplex is a generalized triangle). This perspective, proposed by Miroslav Fiedler, introduces techniques from (simplex) geometry into the field of graph theory and conversely, via an exact correspondence. We introduce this graph-simplex correspondence, identify a number of basic connections between graph characteristics and simplex properties, and suggest some applications as example.

This study examines a painted combat scene on a ceramic vessel of the Moche culture (ad 100–800) of the north coast of Peru. The scene portrays a series of distinctly Moche warriors fighting adversaries who feature characteristics (weaponry, ornaments and dress) that are unconventional for Moche visual culture. Correspondences in Recuay pottery and stone sculpture instead support the argument that the enemies were groups from the neighbouring inland valleys and highlands of the Pacific Andean flanks. The analysis of the imagery and its implications illuminate how societies without writing sometimes perceived and configured interaction with other groups — namely, through representations of warfare.

The article is dedicated to the pre-war poet Yury Inge, who was killed at the very start of the German invasion of the USSR. A war correspondent during the Winter War (1939–1940), Inge joined the newspaper Krasnoznamyonniy Baltiyskiy Flot in 1941 at its headquarters at the new Soviet naval base in Tallinn. Inge took part in the so-called Tallinn disaster, a tragedy yet to be fully explained: the Soviets lost two-thirds of their Baltic Fleet ships during evacuation to Kronstadt. Inge was leaving on the icebreaker Valdemārs, when it was sunk by a naval mine placed by the Soviet military just days before. A witness account describes the poet, wearing a long black naval coat and equipped with a gas mask and a pistol, helping women and children into a lifeboat, while remaining on board of the damaged ship the entire time. Inge died before reaching his 36th birthday. The article offers a first estimation of the tragedy’s scale and lists all literary workers attached to the Baltic Fleet who met their end on the 28th–29th of August, 1941.

The article analyzes the ergatic system «man-machine-environment» in order to build a model of a combat tracked vehicle simulator as an element of the system «crew-combat tracked vehicle-combat situation-environment». A description of a simulated combat tracked vehicle is made as an object of control of the operator of a combat tracked vehicle simulator, as a subject of control with the definition of a person’s role in this system. In the course of the study, it was determined that the combat tracked vehicle simulator should be considered as a system with a complex internal structure. It is advisable to divide this system into two subsystems: the first subsystem is dynamic, this subsystem includes the dynamic platform of the simulator; the second subsystem is informational, in this subsystem the level of conformity of the conceptual model of machine control to the expected control result and the degree of achievement of the control goal is assessed. It should be noted that the dynamic and information subsystems are in constant close interaction with each other and determine the hierarchical structure of the simulator. The very same hierarchical structure of the simulator consists of two levels: dynamic and information-guiding. The directions of further research have been determined, which will ensure maximum correspondence between the simulated and real combat tracked vehicle. Namely, it is necessary to construct a spatial model of the movement of a combat tracked vehicle in a terrain with a complex profile, which will include modeling the oscillations of the vehicle body while moving on the surface of a complex profile and the dynamic effect of braking and acceleration of the vehicle on body oscillations. Army newspaper “Geroicheskaya krasnoarmeyskaya” edited by D. I. Ortenberg covered the fighting of the Workers and Peasants' Red Army in the Khalkhin Gol area. The best front-line correspondent was V. P. Stavsky. He was also the most famous and highest-ranking writer in the USSR. Ortenberg and Stavsky turned the combat leaflet into a highly professional newspaper read by soldiers on the front lines. Stavsky created a permanent column “Heroes of Khalkhin Gol”. His essays and reports educated soldiers, commanders and political workers.

Abstract In this short paper, we will review the proposal of a correspondence between the doubled geometry of Double Field Theory and the higher geometry of bundle gerbes. Double Field Theory is T-duality covariant formulation of the supergravity limit of String Theory, which generalises Kaluza-Klein theory by unifying metric and Kalb-Ramond field on a doubled-dimensional space. In light of the proposed correspondence, this doubled geometry is interpreted as an atlas description of the higher geometry of bundle gerbes. In this sense, Double Field Theory can be interpreted as a field theory living on the total space of the bundle gerbe, just like Kaluza-Klein theory is set on the total space of a principal bundle. This correspondence provides a higher geometric interpretation for para-Hermitian geometry which opens the door to its generalisation to Exceptional Field Theory. Anglo-Catholics were enthusiastic in support of the war, but simultaneously used it to promote Anglo-Catholicism and combat what they perceived to be the errors of non-Anglo-Catholic Anglicanism and the various Protestant groups, opening what might be considered a second front against these religions.

Abstract This article explores an axiomatic approach to distinguishing different usages of correlativity and investigates Hurd and Moore’s disagreement with Hohfeldian correlativity, in terms of a choice of axioms. Detailed critical consideration is provided of three negative steps, ascribing theoretical positions to Hohfeld that Hurd and Moore wish to amend or depart from; and three positive steps taken towards vindicating their stated objectives of avoiding moral combat and providing recognition to active rights. The conclusion is reached that the actual state of any normative system, moral or legal, can best be captured by the finer-grained analysis of correlativity found within Hohfeld’s scheme of analysis. Supplementary discussion is provided on the role of Hurd’s “Correspondence Thesis” within a correlativity axiom for permission (liberty/privilege); the relationship between the correspondence thesis and a set of compossible rights; the compatibility between a logic of correlativity and deontic logic; and, the relationship between moral and legal normative systems, or, our perceptions of them.

Este estudo consiste de uma análise histórica dos programas de combate à fome no Brasil no período de 1930 a 2003. Como critérios metodológicos de análise foram estabelecidos três cortes transversais, correspondentes a contextos específicos da trajetória da política social de alimentação e nutrição no Brasil: 1930-1963; 1964-1984; 1985-2003. Em cada corte investigado, procurou-se identificar e descrever os programas de alimentação e nutrição e evidenciar as suas principais categorias discursivas. A análise dos programas aponta importantes mudanças, sobretudo depois da metade dos anos 1980. A partir desse período, a política de combate à fome no país transitou do planejamento autoritário ao participativo; da centralização à descentralização administrativa; da universalização à focalização de benefícios; do controle estatal ao social; da distribuição de alimentos à transferência de renda em dinheiro; do financiamento público à parceria entre público e privado, entre sociedade civil e Estado.

O debate sobre a destinação de recursos para a COVID-19 tornou-se necessário para a efetiva implantação de estratégias de enfrentamento da doença. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os recursos aplicados no combate à doença pelo governo do Paraná. Tratou-se de estudo descritivo e retrospectivo, utilizando abordagem quantitativa. Coleta de dados documental a partir da divulgação da execução orçamentária de 2020 e 2021 pelo Portal da Transparência. Após análise exploratória por meio de estatística descritiva, os dados foram sintetizados em gráficos. As funções que receberam maior repasse de recursos em 2020 foram Saúde, Educação e Agricultura, correspondendo a 0,23% do PIB local. Já em 2021, foram destinados principalmente à Saúde, Educação e Urbanismo, representando 0,15% do PIB do local. Os resultados revelaram importantes falhas na destinação de recursos para a contenção da doença no estado, em especial na Saúde e Educação, que já apresentavam evidências de um subfinanciamento crônico.

While the Council of Europe as an Intergovernmental Organization has proven remarkably resilient, its archives and records appear to be increasingly fragile. This article documents and analyses the development of records management and archives management within the Council of Europe between 2000 and 2003. This was a period that saw major changes in the way that records were treated in the organization, notably the preparation and implementation of an organization-wide archives policy, and the introduction of an archives management training programme for Council of Europe staff. The concept of archives and records was extended from paper to electronic and audio-visual materials. An internal network of archive correspondents was introduced to increase communication, consultation, co-ordinate RM and facilitate the implementation of the archives policy, and a series of measures was taken to improve access to the archives and records. It was during this period that the first steps were taken in the introduction of archives and records management standards ISAD(G) and ISO 15489. The article highlights the lack of continuity of RM and the increasing vulnerability of records within the organization, suggesting that the lack of professional staff is the most critical issue; the analysis of the developments in this period also illustrates the impact that personal initiatives can have in such a context.

El artículo busca mostrar un acercamiento al estado que guarda el problema de la corrupción en México, así como la comprensión del modelo actual de combate a la corrupción y la incidencia que ha tenido este a partir de la reforma constitucional de 2015 donde justamente se agrega como sello principal, el involucramiento ciudadano. Si bien, hasta ahora, se han realizado múltiples esfuerzos desde el gobierno y la sociedad civil para tratar de frenar y revertir este problema que le ha causado a México un gran costo social, económico e institucional, tal parece que la semilla sembrada no ha dado los frutos esperados. Desgraciadamente, podemos concluir que muchos de esos esfuerzos, sobre todo los que corresponden al poder político, se han instrumentado solo como formas de justificar el poder y han carecido de dos ingredientes fundamentales: la participación ciudadana y la voluntad política. En lo que, sí se ha avanzado, es en el trabajo que, desde las organizaciones sociales, académicas y de comunicación, se ha llevado a cabo para analizar, proponer y visibilizar el problema, lo que, sin duda, obliga a la autoridad a actuar y rendir cuentas.

Introduction. The article examines newly discovered documents to further analyze the participation of Kalmyks in the Russo-Turkish war of 1735– 1739. Goals. The work introduces new data on the actual circumstances to have preceded the involvement of Kalmyk cavalry into the campaign of 1736 and describes their combat activities. Materials and methods. The paper focuses on documents from the National Archive of Kalmykia — and specifically the then correspondence between Khan Donduk-Ombo, other Kalmyk landlords and regional authorities of South Russia — including dispatches and reports by Kalmyk affairs executives. The comparative historical method proved instrumental in compiling an event chronicle of the 1736 campaign on the basis of coinciding details contained in most of the sources studied. Results. The article publishes a total of ten documents describing the participation of Kalmyk cavalry in 1736 Kuban hostilities. Each of the former clarifies certain circumstances experienced by the Khanate during the military mobilization and sheds light on Kalmyk combat efforts supported by Kabardians, Don and Greben Cossacks. Conclusions. The introduced documentary materials shall significantly contribute to historical reconstruction of not only the Russo-Turkish war of 1735–1739 but also histories of all involved peoples across the North Caucasus and Black Sea Coast.

99 adult specialists in combat sports ( n = 21), team sports ( n = 37), gymnastics ( n = 22), and swimming ( n = 19) ( M age = 20 yr., SD = 2; 64 young men, 35 young women) performed three 25-m swimming tasks whilst “blindfolded” by opaque goggles: front crawl in a straight line, dolphin-kicking on the back, and dolphin-kicking on the front. Even though the gymnasts (like the swimmers) were at ease in all 3 situations, the motor skills of the “motor interaction” specialists (team sports, combat sports) put the latter at a disadvantage. The similarities between the gymnasts' and swimmers' behavior (confirmed using factorial correspondence analysis with the TRI-DEUX program) are undoubtedly related to the fact that these sportspersons essentially live in the same sensory space in their respective practices: exteroceptive information is subordinated by proprioceptive information. In contrast, the 99 subjects' timed freestyle swimming performances over 75 m depended so much on their physical and anthropometric qualities that the results were independent of the sporting specialties for the novice swimmers. Hence, the mere fact that the 22 gymnasts, who tended to be shorter, with a higher proportion of women, were more at ease in the water did not turn them into great performers.

O crescimento mundial da fitoterapia como método de prevenção e combate as patologias, acabou estimulando a avaliação das atividades no controle de biofilme dental a partir de extratos de plantas. Objetivou-se realizar uma breve revisão da literatura sobre as principais plantas medicinais que são utilizadas no combate ao biofilme bucal pelo mundo. Trata-se de uma análise de dados secundários, por meio de uma revisão da literatura do tipo narrativa com base nos bancos de dados: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo), National Center for Biotechnology Information (Pubmed), Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline). Foram utilizados os descritores biofilme dental, fitoterapia, plantas medicinais, além dos termos correspondestes em inglês e espanhol. Utilizados como critérios de inclusão trabalhos publicados em português, inglês e espanhol no período de 2009 a 2019 no formato de artigo, tese e dissertação, tendo a busca dos dados ocorrida de julho a agosto de 2018. Dentre as famílias mais utilizadas no combate ao biofilme dental, destacaram-se as famílias Asteraceae e Anacardiaceae, sendo as que mais apresentaram estudos sobre esse tema. Diante da revisão realizada pode-se concluir que as plantas medicinais têm apresentado resultados bastante significativos no combate ao biofilme dental, seja por suas propriedades antimicrobianas ou pelo seu potencial antiaderente frente as bactérias formadoras do biofilme dental. Sugere-se a realização de mais estudos e ensaios clínicos para métodos convencionais no combate ao biofilme dental e consequentemente da cárie dentária.

The article is devoted to perceptions of life and death by men at war. This study is based on correspondence, letters and diaries of Soviet Jews, as soldiers of the Red Army during WWII, which were recently collected in the archives of the Diaspora Research Centre at Tel Aviv University (2012-2017) and now, for the first time, are being used for academic purposes. Analysing this correspondence, the author seeks an answer to the question, why did Jews seek conscription in the army? Was this a manifestation of Soviet patriotism or a desire to protect their families, parents, wives, and girlfriends? How did Jews feel in the Red Army among comrades-in-arms of other nationalities? The article describes how they fought, and what helped soldiers to survive – the belief not to be killed; combat experience; skillful handling of weapons and the art of war; accident, or fate. It concludes that the health of a whole generation of people who survived the war was undermined not only by hunger, overwork, lack of sleep, exhaustion, and disease but also by mental suffering. However, those who survived to victory learned to value life in a way that could not be done by those who did not go to war and were not familiar with death.

The war in Iraq through the eyes of Polish and Czech reporters: The example of texts by Paweł Smoleński, Mariusz Zawadzki, Michal Kubal, František Šulc and Barbora ŠámalováThis paper analyzes three reportage books focusing on the war in Iraq in 2003. Two reportages are Polish, the authors of the third book are Czech journalists. Paweł Smoleński focuses primarily on the knowledge of Iraqi culture and mentality in the face of building a new Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The armed conflict itself remains somewhat in the background of the reporter’s interest. Smoleński’s texts are closest to so-called literary coverage. Mariusz Zawadzki as an embedded correspondent — among other things — accompanied U.S. troops to cover combat operations. The texts of Czech reporters, some of which were in Iraq since the very beginning, are closer to the so-called “feature”. In addition, they are stylized as a reporter quasi-diary.

Objective: We have analyzed Brazil’s initial COVID-19 combat actions by the regional innovation ecosystem actors.Methodology/approach: This is a descriptive and qualitative study using documentary research. In total, 471 reports collected via web scraping were submitted to content analysis (using a codebook and intercoder test) and correspondence analysis.Originality/relevance: From an innovation ecosystem perspective, this study fulfills an identified need to understand how different actors have proposed initial solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, considering different geographic regions.Main results: According to the seminal literature, in the more economically and socially favored regions, the government-industry dyadic model was corroborated, while in the less favored regions, the most innovative actors were universities and society. Our results have not shown the quintuple helix’s performance, which leads us to ponder the use of this model in crises. Furthermore, although the quadruple helix model was observed in our analyses, in the Brazilian geographic regions the helices were not designed in a transversal way.Theoretical contributions: We propose that the geography of a pandemic combat occurs unevenly by the innovation ecosystem actors. Moreover, the helices ordering refers to the theoretical development process and not to the complementarity of the role between actors.Practical implications: This article highlights the need for integrated management of the innovation ecosystem’s initial actions in a pandemic, preventing regions from being neglected, especially those with lower levels of wealth or quality of life.

Purpose: to develop a methodology for evaluating the reaction of the choice of combat athletes using computer technologies and to conduct research on testing and determining its validity. Materials, participants and methods: the total number of participants in the study was 77 people (mean age: 13.8±0.7 years, 28% girls, 72% boys). To evaluate the choice reaction, the computer program «Visuomotor Choice Reaction» for mobile devices was developed and implemented. The following methods have been studied: analysis of scientific and methodological information and Internet sources; summarizing best practices; computer programming method; methods of mathematical statistics. Results: the study was carried out in three stages. At the first stage, the correspondence of the selected colors and shapes to the tasks that should be solved during the test was determined. Measuring the speed of response to a single color and to individual shapes showed that the values are evenly distributed, the range of variation for the response to color was 50,7 ms, and the response to shapes was 133,4 ms. At the second stage, indicators of the reaction of choice were obtained and the operation of the computer program was tested in the "field conditions". The practical application of the program made it possible to obtain indicators of the reaction of the choice of taekwondo novice athletes and determine the stability of its work. The obtained data of the third stage determined the reliability and validity of the proposed method for assessing the reaction of choice. Conclusions: based on the analysis of scientific and methodological literature and the competitive activity of martial artists of various specializations, conversations with coaches and qualified athletes, a computer program «Visuomotor Choice Reaction» was developed to assess the choice reaction. According to the results of the study of the reaction of choice of taekwondo novice athletes using the proposed methodology, in order to test it, it can be argued that the «Visuomotor Choice Reaction» computer program allows you to obtain indicators of sensorimotor reactions, is simple and reliable when using it. According to the results of the correlation and dispersion analysis, it can be argued that the proposed method for assessing the choice reaction is reliable and has a significant level of validity and meets all metrological requirements.

Relato de experiência: Trata-se de um relato de experiência do tipo descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, em relação à campanha de vacinação da COVID-19 do grupo prioritário dos idosos durante o período de pandemia, desenvolvido por acadêmicos de enfermagem de uma Universidade Pública Federal localizada na cidade de Belém, no estado do Pará, realizado em março de 2021. A ação foi efetuada por intermédio da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde (SESMA) do município e coordenada por uma enfermeira da mesma instituição. A campanha deu-se início com a faixa etária de 84 anos ou mais do grupo correspondente. Considerações finais: Através da vivência na campanha de vacinação contra a COVID-19 foi possível perceber a importância da vacinação para a sociedade e o papel principal que a enfermagem exerce frente à campanha vacinal, além da experiência adquirida quanto acadêmicos e futuros enfermeiros.

A hipertensão arterial sistêmica é uma doença de enorme importância a nível de saúde pública nacional e internacional, fato corroborado pela expressividade da prevalência dentre a população, associado a um quadro de morbimortalidade extremamente significativo. Os principais fatores de risco associados à doença são comuns a maioria da população e o enfrentamento dos mesmos, compõem a melhor estratégia no combate a hipertensão arterial sistêmica. Nesse contexto, o combate ao sedentarismo demonstra ser medida de elevada recomendação científica, com a indução da hipotensão pós-exercício (HPE) mediante a prática de exercícios físicos sendo uma importante ferramenta não-medicamentosa no combate à doença. A atual pesquisa objetivou realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre a indução de hipotensão pós-exercício como técnica terapêutica da hipertensão arterial sistêmica. Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura realizada por meio de buscas nos bancos de dados Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), National Library of Medicine (PubMed) e Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). As palavras-chave utilizadas foram “hipotensão pós-exercício”, “exercício” e “pressão sanguínea” e seus correspondentes em inglês associados ao operador booleano AND. Na literatura selecionada foram encontrados estudos que evidenciaram uma redução dos níveis de pressão arterial após a realização de exercícios físicos de modo significativo. Estudos demonstraram que a pressão arterial pode ser reduzida por até oito horas através do fenômeno da hipotensão pós-exercício, sendo um mecanismo que pode ser obtido tanto em atividades aeróbias quanto resistidas, além de exercícios mistos. Redução da pressão arterial sistólica de 6,9 mmHg a 5,6 mmHg após uma hora de exercício foi verificada, demonstrado capacidade como ente terapêutico de relevância. A hipertensão arterial sistêmica demonstrou ao longo das décadas ser uma doença de enorme importância, e o seu combate, atuando na prevenção e redução de eventos adversos se faz uma medida imperiosa pelos sistemas de saúde mundiais.

Resumo O estudo que conduziu a este artigo atenta na forma como a lei e o direito português proporcionam mecanismos que permitem levar a cabo políticas de combate às transferências bancárias ilegítimas com recurso à Internet. A abordagem metodológica consistiu não apenas numa análise rigorosa do enquadramento jurídico da questão mas também numa análise estatística de dados correspondentes aos crimes de burla informática e nas comunicações registados pelas autoridades policiais. É apresentada argumentação a favor de que as transferências bancárias ilegítimas com recurso à Internet devam ser consideradas fraudes ao invés de burlas, e são apresentados dados que corroboram a ideia de que, nos próximos cinco a dez anos, este problema se tornará muitíssimo relevante para o sistema judiciário e para a sociedade como um todo. Finalmente, e como parte do esforço em prol de uma política internacional concertada, sugere-se que estudos futuros alarguem a investigação da temática apresentada a outras regiões geográficas, de que é exemplo a América do Sul e, em particular, a países com grande proximidade a Portugal, como é o caso do Brasil.

Abstract Before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, previous research cautioned that complex and meaningful quotidian rituals involving intimate touch need re-evaluation as these pose a hygienic concern in pandemic culture. Faith-based practices entail human-to-human contact that could inevitably cause the virus infection contagion if not appropriately addressed. In a World Health Organization document, the crucial role of inter-faith collaboration and sharing of best practices to combat the spread of the virus are encouraged. In this correspondence, we assert that taking home ashes and launching digital Lenten ashes filter are non-traditional yet creative ways for the Catholic Church to perform the ritual practice in celebrating Ash Wednesday. We argued that such creative ritual practices changed the landscape of faith-based practices and implied trans-local participation of the Catholic community as witnesses of faith while upkeeping public health.

AbstractThe noted Episcopal theologian William Porcher DuBose was a seminarian when the American Civil War began. He was torn between continuing his studies for ordination and joining the Confederate Army. He felt duty bound to defend his homeland, and he served heroically, wounded in combat, and taken as a prisoner of war. Troubled by the senselessness and inhumanity of war, he was eventually ordained and served as a military chaplain. He devoted himself to faith and ministry when he realized his country and culture were lost. DuBose vividly presents his views on war and faith in his wartime correspondence with his fiancée and later wife Anne Barnwell Perroneau, and other writings. His experiences of loss and poverty were the basis for his theology of the cross and his understanding of the role of suffering in the Christian life, and he subsequently dedicated himself to faith, peace, and reconciliation.

Section 213 of the 1932 Federal Economy Act mandated that if both members of a married couple worked for the federal government, one of them—usually the wife—would be dismissed when cuts were made. The law codified widespread prejudice against employed wives. This article interrogates how Depression-era feminists used their organizational publications to combat Section 213, primarily through sensationalist narratives about family hardship and couples scandalously cohabitating. These narratives were amplified in the mainstream press and in a widely syndicated fictional newspaper serial, which was optioned by Warner Bros. for a movie. That mainstream newspapers picked up feminist narratives illustrates the power of sensationalism at a time when objectivity is believed to have dominated news practices. The feminist campaign complicates that view, demonstrating sensationalism’s value as a persuasive tool and its use in “political mimesis,” with feminists asserting political agency by creating “correspondence” with opponents to raise consciousness.
