The painting Plaza Mayor de Lima de los Reinos de el Peru, año de 1680, which is held in the collection of the Museo de América in Madrid, presents an idealized image of social interaction in the Plaza Mayor with its depiction of people from a variety of social groups. Little is known surrounding the painting’s commission, and recent scholarship focuses primarily on the colonial architecture within the image. This thesis seeks to shift the scholarly dialogue by examining the depictions of the female figures within the painting. As this thesis will argue, both the portrayal of the female figures in different modes of dress and the location of the figures within the painting document the ways in which distinctions in race and economic class were understood in seventeenth-century Lima. By analyzing the dress and the positioning of the figures, the interactions of Europeans, West Africans, indigenous and mixed raced persons are revealed.

Native and Colonial Americans had vastly different approaches to the world, and viewed nature and other people in quite dissimilar ways. The concept of self is central to this project because personal values and attitudes toward others are grounded in agency - actions that emerge from the self and define the way that one treats his or her surroundings and everyone or thing in it. The way that one's self is perceived is necessarily communicated within the context of social settings. Situation in a world of other people (and of nature) requires that actions be weighed in accordance with agency. The very concept of what it is to have self is a key way to understand a world-view, because the values that are central to cultural communities have their locus within self. As such, the importance of defining to what or to whom one is agent must be addressed. The concepts of self that were fostered in members of tribes and early settlement communities contributed greatly to the world-views of their members, and consequently the treatment of their surroundings. One aim of Native American religions was to cultivate within tribal members the worthiness of respect harbored within beings of all sorts. Native American oral traditions established in members, from early on, the skill of actively listening to nature and the mindset that the earth and its inhabitants should be approached with care and respect. This was apparent in the treatment of nature, for personhood was extended to living creatures of all kinds, and even what we might regard as inanimate objects. Native Americans viewed themselves as vitally related to all other living powers of the world. These approaches to interacting with nature, combined with a word-view that was willing to accept a wide array of entities as beings, instilled a broad concept of self within Native American peoples. In contrast, based on traditional Western thought - foundationally that of Descartes and highly influenced by John Locke - Colonial Americans developed a very different concept of self from which members of this culture saw the world as hierarchical. As a result, selves turned inward and understood personal existence as other than, or separate from, nature. Persons were manifestly cognitive beings with moral agency, and only other beings with the same attributes should be afforded equal respect or regarded as having rights, as such. The thematic that developed as a result was, and still is today, founded upon the value of property ownership and the utilization of property and natural resources for production. Why is it important to look at the individual Native American tribe member or Colonial American community member? Since the actions of each member contribute to the wellbeing of the whole group, and consequently of nature, it is important to grasp how self-conduct that is necessarily a product of the individual self, fits into the bigger picture and affects the attitudes and actions of the individual toward other people and the environment. This coincides with the purpose of this project to show how the concept of self for Native Americans can be illuminating in many ways, consequently casting light on how we might learn from their ways, rather than give the impression to readers that one concept of self is any better or worse than the other. It is my aim to illustrate the unique and intriguing way that Native Americans view the self as part of nature, and investigate how these differing concepts of self, in relation to nature, affect how the these groups act toward nature. My hope is that readers will be encouraged to reflect on their own values and the roles that those values play in modern America, including some of the implications that these concepts of self have had in the past and continue to have for the future.

The Longfellow House in Cambridge, Massachusetts is one of America’s best known historic homes. Built in 1759 by Major John Vassall, the grand house exemplified Colonial English tastes and was at the center of a cycle of Colonial Royalist mansions. After the American Revolution, however, the house quickly became a symbol of American patriotism. Occupants ranging from General George Washington and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow each added to the legacy of the house. Early in the nineteenth century, the Longfellow House’s distyle portico- pavilion traveled to Canterbury, Connecticut, becoming a colloquial house-type. Aided by its connection to General Washington and its appearance in two World’s Fairs, the house gained further popularity around the American Centennial. This thesis provides the most expansive history of the house’s impact on American architecture to date and is the first to connect the house to both the Greenhouse at Mount Vernon and Connecticut’s “Canterbury Style.”

Using content analysis of the three largest United States Newsweeklies this thesis explores representations of young women's sexuality during the early 2000's. While popular culture during this period is focused on "Girls Gone Wild" causing widespread feminist concern over the "third wave's" definition of a feminist sexuality, no young women with sexual agency are presented in the magazines. Instead the women presented, who are overwhelmingly white, are either too pure to posses any information regarding sexual activities, engaged in sexual activities that they are coerced or forced into, or are celibate. The combination of these discourses expose a narrative of female empowerment through chastity that mirrors the Victorian-era ideals of white womanhood. Using post-colonial theory the thesis argues that this representation, combined with the erasure of all other alternatives is indicative of a identity crisis within the collective United Sates conscious

Анотація:

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian polynomials. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We derive a formula for the generating function of these colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which reduces to a formula of Shareshian and Wachs for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We show that applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of colored permutation statistics. The family of colored permutation groups includes the family of symmetric groups and the family of hyperoctahedral groups, also called the type A Coxeter groups and type B Coxeter groups, respectively. By specializing our formulas to these cases, they reduce to the Shareshian-Wachs q-analog of Euler's formula, formulas of Foata and Han, and a new generalization of a formula of Chow and Gessel.

The purpose of this paper is to examine and to analyze the arguments about a possible Swedish law against the veil. I have therefore highlighted how notions about the veil creates and reproduces power-structures and meaning-systems. I structured the arguments in a pro et contra schedule and then analyzed them by using a theoretical framework consisting post-colonial feminism, orientalism, multi-culture and intersectionality together with research produced by Joan Wallach Scott (2010), Pia Karlsson Minganti (2007) and Anne Sofie Roald (2003). The results of the study shows that the people who either argue for or against a veil-law agree that the veil is an oppression of women and that it must be resisted. To be objective in the discussion of the veil seems to be impossible and the women it affects deprived voice. A piece of cloth has never been as controversial as the veil and the question is whether it is possible to reach consensus on its symbolism, the arguments that I analyzed contradicts it.

A pesquisa tentará compreender as conturbadas e contraditórias relações entre a Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana no Brasil Colônia, oficialmente sob o domínio do Estado português sob o regime de Padroado régio, mas oferecendo-lhe resistência através das Ordens leias ao papa, vinculadas à Propaganda Fide. O que levou o Brasil Colônia a ter sob seu território duas Igrejas, uma sob o comando do rei, outra que respondia ao papa, será a problemática enfrentada no presente estudo. Levando-se em consideração que relações conflituosas e contraditórias, bem como alianças e convergências são uma constante na história da Igreja de Roma, procuraremos nossa compreensão não apenas na análise da época da vigência do Padroado português no Brasil Colônia, mas tentaremos encontrar as respostas em períodos históricos anteriores, como a Antiguidade Tardia e a Idade Média, onde as relações entre Igreja e Estado também alternaram momentos de tensão, convergências e conflitos, e as formulações ideológicas que deram à Igreja sua mentalidade perante o Estado tiveram sua origem e desenvolvimento, muito antes da Conquista da América. Não objetivamos aqui reescrever a história eclesiástica, porém alguns recortes históricos serão utilizados aqui para nos ajudar a esclarecer as questões propostas. Partiremos do pressuposto de que os conflitos verificados não são apenas disputas de poder entre Roma e Lisboa, mas abrigam mentalidades cristalizadas em ideologias, que deram origem a estruturas mentais que não foram abandonadas pela totalidade da Igreja, e sobreviveram sob uma perspectiva de muito longa duração. Como se formaram tais mentalidades e estruturas e como chegaram até o Brasil colônia, quais foram estas mentalidades e estruturas e como elas se enquadram na longa duração será objeto de análise neste estudo. Tais mentalidades e estruturas tiveram origem na Antiguidade Tardia, antes da Igreja se aliar ao poder estatal, e tiveram, com as devidas transformações, continuidade e desenvolvimento na Idade Média, até chegarem ao Brasil, colônia de Portugal.
This research will try to comprehend the troubled and contradictory relations in the Apostolic Roman Catholic Church in colonial Brazil, officially under the domain of the Portuguese state under the regime of Régios Patronage, but offering resistance through the Loyal Orders of the pope, tied to the Propaganda Fide. The problem that will be confronted in this study is what led Colonial Brazil to have in its territory two churches, one under the command of the king, and the other that responded to the pope. Considering that conflicting and contradictory relations, as well as alliances and convergences are constant in the Roman Churchs history, we will seek our comprehension not only in analyzing the period during the Portuguese Patronage in Colonial Brazil, but we will try to find answers in historic periods previous to this one, like in the Late Antiquity and in the Middle Age, where the relations between the Church and the State also exchanged periods of tension, convergences and conflicts, and the ideological formulations that gave the Church its mentality before the State had its origin and development, way before the Conquest of America. We do not have the objective of rewriting the ecclesiastic history, although some historical clippings will be used here to help us clarify the proposed questions. We will start from the understanding that the verified conflicts arent only power disputes between Rome and Lisbon, but accommodate mentalities crystalized in ideologies, which originated mental structures that were not totally abandoned by the whole Church, and survived under a very long term perspective. So, the object of analysis in this study is how these mentalities and structures were formed and how they got to Colonial Brazil, what were the mentalities and structures and how they can be framed in the long term. These mentalities and structures had their origin in Late Antiquity, before the Church allied itself to the States power, and had, with the due transformations, continuity and development in the Middle Age, until it got to Brazil, Portugals Colony.

The disruption of an anastomosis is the most significant single cause of morbidity and mortality following colonic surgery. A number of factors are known to increase the risk of anastomotic breakdown in the colon, and these are reviewed. The physiology of the intestines is discussed, with particular emphasis on the effects on the bowel of anaesthetic drugs, techniques employed during anaesthesia, and other factors pertaining to the peri-operative period. A retrospective clinical study of patients who had undergone colonic anastomosis either during spinal nerve block with a light general anaesthetic or under conventional general anaesthesia is pre¬ sented and the findings discussed. There appeared to be a trend sugg¬ esting that spinal nerve block might result in a rather lower incid¬ ence of anastomotic breakdown. Because oxygen delivery is an important factor in wound heal¬ ing, and because anastomotic healing is known to be impaired by an inadequate blood flow, an animal model was developed for the measure¬ ment of colonic blood flow. The model was designed in such a way that the integrity of the nerve and blood supply was maintained, and was validated by comparison with other techniques. The effects of a number of factors of relevance to the peri-op¬ erative period were investigated using the model. Hypocapnia was found to reduce colonic blood flow, and hypercapnia to increase it. The increase in flow associated with hypercapnia diminished over a 60 min period. Moderate hypovolaemia decreased blood flow to the colon. Spinal nerve block and halothane both resulted in increased flow, al¬ though i.v. methoxamine or hypovolaemia during spinal nerve block produced substantial reductions. The clinical relevance of these findings is discussed.

"Quare Contestations: Bridging Queer, Lesbian, and Feminist Narratives of the Irish Diaspora" examines three sets of biographical and autobiographical narratives about Irish who migrated to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dwelling primarily in queer studies and diaspora studies, this thesis participates in the construction of a queer Irish diaspora archive by analyzing the spaces of overlap between Irish queer, feminist, and lesbian - together, quare - theory and lived experience in these narratives. In my analysis, I demonstrate the fluidity, movement, and interdisciplinary scope of a quare framework for approaching studies of gender and sexuality in the Irish diaspora context. This thesis intervenes into the work already being done to queer Irish diaspora by examining the contestations of "Irishness" appearing in the narratives that are analyzed, and by in turn contesting and complicating the action and meanings made by "queer" in the existing archive of queer Irish diaspora literature.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo aplicar a técnica do Filtro de Kalman Estendido com ruído colorido a uma aeronave do tipo quadrotor para atenuar a interferência eletro-magnética proveniente de linhas de transmissão de energia de modo a aumentar a confiabilidade e segurança de voos em suas proximidades. Com o intuito de executar missões de monitoramento autônomo, a técnica desenvolvida visa estimar o valor da interferência eletromagnética produzida por linhas de transmissão de energia em alta tensão para que seja possível aplicar a correção necessária. Essa estimação e´ feita a partir do modelo matemático do campo eletromagnético da linha, que leva em consideração a posição, corrente da linha, sistema físico de transmissão, entre outros. Para a avaliação dos resultados, utilizou-se os índices de performance não intrusivos que levam em consideração a integral absoluta do erro (IAE) e a integral do erro quadrático (ISE). Os resultados foram considerados eficientes e aplicáveis com base nos índices de desempenho, permitindo que o quadrotor executasse todas as missões como planejadas, sendo possível ainda a diminuição da distância entre o veículo e a linha de transmissão que, por consequência, permite uma análise mais detalhada e aumenta a qualidade do monitoramento e identificação de avarias ao longo do percurso.
This work aims to apply the Extended Kalman Filter technique with colored noise to a quadrotor-type aircraft to attenuate electromagnetic interference from power trans-mission lines in order to increase the reliability and safety of nearby flights. To perform autonomous monitoring missions, the developed technique aims to estimate the value of the electromagnetic interference produced by high voltage power transmission lines, which makes possible to apply the necessary correction. This estimation is made from the mathematical model of the power line electromagnetic field, which takes into ac-count the position, line current, physical transmission system, among others. In order to evaluate the results, it was used non-intrusive performance indexes that take into account the integrated absolute error (IAE) and the integrated square error (ISE). The results were considered efficient and applicable based on performance indices, allowing the operator to perform all the missions as planned, and the distance between the vehicle and the transmission line can be reduced which, consequently, result in a more detailed analysis and increases the monitoring quality and the faults identification along the route.

Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for detection of dysplasia in the colon. Resection of dysplasia at colonoscopy has been shown to reduce the subsequent risk of colorectal cancer. With the recent advent of National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme the number of colonoscopies performed in the United Kingdom has increased significantly. In addition, the recent drive for quality improvement has resulted in increased number of dysplastic lesions detected, resected and sent for histopathology. This has led to substantial increases in the cost associated with the procedure. This thesis investigates how advanced technology can improve detection and characterisation of dysplasia at colonoscopy, potentially contributing to time and cost savings. The introduction reviews the literature on dysplasia detection at colonoscopy, both in terms of basic withdrawal technique and how advanced technology can help reduce miss rates. The significance of small colorectal polyps is reviewed and the accuracy of recent colonoscopic technologies in polyp characterization considered. Three studies examined detection of dysplasia: a small randomized control trial showed that magnetic endoscope imager did not improve caecal intubation or dysplasia detection rates in selected patients when used by experienced colonoscopists. Two studies, one of which was in patients with long standing colitis, did not demonstrate the benefit of narrow band imaging for detection of dysplasia. A cohort study revealed that in vivo characterization of dysplasia can be done accurately and is feasible in routine clinical practice although the inter-observer agreement is moderate at best as assessed by a retrospective study. A computer algorithm was devised to attempt to reduce the inter-observer variability and has shown promising results in a pilot study. A training module on the use of narrow band imaging in characterization was developed and validated leading to improved accuracy and reduced variability amongst the participants. Finally, a quality assurance study confirmed that the still photographs of polyps are adequate record of optical diagnosis.

Aims and objectives: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the development of full-thickness laparoendoscopic excision (FLEX) as a surgical innovation in the management of early colonic neoplasia. The objectives were to (1) evaluate current approaches to surgical management, (2) explore challenges to surgical innovation and (3) evaluate novel surgical techniques in early colonic neoplasia. Methods: Objective 1: The impact of colon cancer stage on postoperative outcome was analysed using a prospective, international clinical dataset. A decision analysis model explored the potential patient impact of offering local excision to T1 colon cancer. A systematic review evaluted the quality of reporting of innovation in laparoendoscopic colonic excision. Objective 2: A systematic review of patient treatment preferences for management of colorectal cancer was undertaken. A Delphi consensus was formed on endpoints to measure in FLEX. The accuracy of CT colonography (CTC) to analyse local anatomy in early colonic malignancy was evaluated. Objective 3: Feasibility studies of sentinel node mapping for early colon cancer and FLEX for complex, benign polyps were undertaken. Results: The morbidity of colectomy is unaffected by stage of neoplasia. Local excisional approaches for T1 colon cancer could preserve quality-of-life, especially in elderly, comorbid groups. The current methods of reporting surgical innovation in laparoendoscopic surgery are deficient. Patients are prepared to trade survival to avoid surgical seqeulae. Consensus endpoints for FLEX focus on early safety-related outcomes. CTC can accurately assess local anatomical features that will be used in patient selection for FLEX. Sentinel node mapping is feasible in early colon cancer. FLEX is feasible for removal of complex, benign polyps in clinical practice. Conclusion: This thesis has shown that the FLEX technique can allow patients to avoid the morbidity of colectomy for complex, benign polyps and that structured reporting frameworks should guide future investigation of this surgical innovation.

This thesis sets out to examine the hypothesis that some patients with idiopathic constipation, notably those who develop their symptoms following childbirth or hysterectomy, have regional as opposed to total colonic dysmotility. Such a group may be amenable to segmental rather than total colonic resection. Several clinical studies are presented which establish postchildbirth/hysterectomy constipation as a distinct subgroup of idiopathic constipation. Studies of gastric emptying demonstrate that patients with postchildbirth/hysterectomy constipation have normal motility in the proximal gastrointestinal tract. In contrast, patients with idiopathic constipation have prolonged gastric emptying indicating that proximal GI dysmotility may form a significant component of the presenting symptoms. Having identified that the proximal GI tract appears normal in patients with postchildbirth/hysterectomy constipation the next task was to identify in which region of the colon the dysmotility was most severe. Segmental colonic transit studies, using radio-opaque markers, identify delayed transit in the left colon, while dynamic radio-isotope studies localise the area of abnormality to the sigmoid colon. Colonic manometry studies, using a water-perfusion catheter point to a region of hindgut dysmotility which manifests as an excess of low pressure waves at rest and a specific failure to generate high pressure propagative waves. The usefulness of prostigmine provocation testing is examined critically in this group of patients and the pitfalls of this technique are presented.

The T-box transcription factor Brachyury (T) has a well-established role in essential morphogenetic movements in the developing embryo, but in recent years has emerged as a cancer biomarker and promising therapeutic target. Studies in patientderived cancer tissues and cancer cells suggest that Brachyury is associated with poor patient survival and the epithelial to mesenchymal transition. These observations suggest that Brachyury has an important function in the progression of several cancers. However, the exact mechanism by which it is involved in cancer progression is still incompletely understood. Here, we show that Brachyury has two expressed transcript variants (TV1 and TV2) that are expressed in both normal and cancer tissues. We report the expression of Brachyury in a subset of enteroendocrine cells (EECs) of the normal human colonic crypts, marked by the EEC marker Chromogranin A and occasionally by the reserve stem cell marker Lrig1. We hypothesise that these cells are a population of reserve stem cells in the normal colonic crypt and that Brachyury contributes to their maintenance and plastic response to damage and environmental cues. Brachyury positive EEC-like cells were observed in colorectal adenomas, primary colorectal cancers and metastases of colorectal origin. Furthermore, expression of Brachyury in EEC-like cells in primary colorectal carcinomas confers a poor survival outcome and progression-free survival in patients in which they are present.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen presenting cells, which recognize, acquire and present tumour antigens to adaptive immune cells for effective anti-tumour immune response. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality in UK. The potential role of DC-based immunotherapy in adjunct to conventional CRC treatment has not yet been fully explored. Research to-date suggests that the theory of tumour immunoediting is applicable to CRC, but there is limited evidence on the role of DCs in this process. The overall aim of the work in this thesis was to identify differences in systemic and colonic DC characteristics between healthy controls, “pre-cancer” groups (FAP and UC with higher risk of CRC) and CRC patients. Furthermore, “host” and “disease” factors influencing systemic and colonic DCs were investigated. Results demonstrated that systemic DCs in CRC were more activated and lymph node migratory. The proportion of “homeless” DCs and circulating Th-1 cytokines were significantly higher in CRC. There was evidence of colonic DC compartmentalization depending on the location of CRC. Tumoral DCs were more activated and lymph node migratory but remained phenotypically immature. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that tumour cells mediate the up- regulation of CCR7 in tumour-infiltrating cells, whereas tumour-associated adipocytes mediated the up-regulation of scavenger receptor (CD36) in tumour-infiltrating cells. In vitro colonic DC conditioning with leptin led to up-regulation of scavenger receptors, but not in systemic DCs, highlighting the potential importance of mesenteric adipocyte-derived factors in tumour-mediated DC modulation. This study highlighted that changes in systemic and colonic DC characteristics occur after development of CRC. Both tumour-derived and patient factors play an essential role in modulating DC characteristics. Tumour-associated adipocytes and adipokines have a role in colonic DC modulation in CRC. Further studies are required to explore the potential pathways of DC immunomodulation in CRC which has been identified in this study.

Rationale and Objectives There is convincing evidence that physical activity (PA) reduces risk of colon cancer (CC) and may improve survival after cancer, although few older adults achieve recommended PA guidelines. Numerous barriers to participation exist, though few studies focus on socio-cultural influences. This study explores barriers specific to individuals at elevated risk of CC following screening colonoscopy, as well as how health professionals or a ‘diagnosis’ may provide additional motivation to change. Methods Interviews were conducted with colonic polyp patients and CC survivors over 60 years old, selectively sampled from a feasibility study for a randomised controlled PA intervention. Narrative accounts enabled discussion of influences on health behaviour throughout participants’ lifetimes, the impact of their recent ‘diagnosis’, and attitudes towards PA. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with health professionals to triangulate data collection. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and a constructivist grounded theory approach to data analysis was followed. Findings Despite not meeting current PA guidelines, participants perceived a lifetime of ‘natural’ PA. CC survivors were more inclined to initiate PA engagement to improve their health; conversely, elevated risk individuals were often not aware of their change in health status, leading them to conclude that no lifestyle change was necessary. Professionals confirmed that no PA guidance is currently offered to screening patients, but believed that there may be scope to implement health promotion advice. Barriers towards this however, are complex and numerous. Conclusions The ‘meaning of PA’ is situated and understandings may differ. Despite reporting perceptions of high PA, this study sample did not seem to understand what constitutes sufficient PA to elicit a positive health response. Risk status awareness and the benefits of PA is lacking in elevated risk individuals. For the screening setting to be utilised, questions around ‘why’, ‘when’ ‘who’ and ‘how’ health promotion should be delivered, need to be addressed.

Circulating endothelial progenitor cells may be important in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) and give rise to endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) in culture. These cells represent an accessible surrogate population to investigate endothelial dysfunction in IPAH. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured from healthy volunteers (n=25, 72% female; age range 23-57 yr) and IPAH patients (n=30, 60% female; age range 22-56 yr). Older IPAH patients (n=6, 50% female; age range 62-82 yr) were also sampled. Distinct colonies appeared after 13-35 days and exhibited a typical cobblestone morphology. The average frequency of colonies and clonal growth of isolated cells was similar in healthy volunteers and IPAH patients. Age-dependent differences were observed however in the number and frequency of colonies, which declines with age in the control but not in IPAH subjects. The endothelial phenotype was confirmed by immunostaining and flow cytometry, exhibiting endothelial and progenitor markers, but not hematopoietic markers. Endothelial cell functions, including proliferation, angiogenesis, migration and responses to apoptotic stimuli, were compared in cells between passages 4 to 7. IPAH cells showed enhanced angiogenic capacity (tube formation on Matrigel), significantly less apoptosis (lower caspase-3/7 activity) in response to serum and growth factor deprivation, and impaired migratory capacity compared with control ECFCs. Dysfunctional transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and bone morphogenetic protein receptor expression and signalling are implicated in IPAH and were assessed by RT-PCR and western blotting. IPAH and control ECFCs differed in their TGF-β type I (ALK5) receptor expression/signalling and in the expression of other regulatory proteins (e.g. chloride-like intracellular channel-4). Blood-derived ECFCs display an endothelial lineage similar to that of mature endothelial cells. ECFCs from IPAH patients have a distinct functional phenotype and exhibit differences in TGF-β receptor superfamily expression/signalling, which may contribute to endothelial dysfunction and vascular remodelling in IPAH.
