Анотація:

Bitterness perception in mammals is mostly directed at natural toxins that induce innate avoidance behaviours. Bitter taste is mediated by the G protein-coupled receptor TAS2R, which is located in taste cell membranes. One of the best-studied bitter taste receptors is TAS2R38, which recognizes phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). Here we investigate the sensitivities of TAS2R38 receptors to PTC in four species of leaf-eating monkeys (subfamily Colobinae). Compared with macaque monkeys (subfamily Cercopithecinae), colobines have lower sensitivities to PTC in behavioural and in vitro functional analyses. We identified four non-synonymous mutations in colobine TAS2R38 that are responsible for the decreased sensitivity of the TAS2R38 receptor to PTC observed in colobines compared with macaques. These results suggest that tolerance to bitterness in colobines evolved from an ancestor that was sensitive to bitterness as an adaptation to eating leaves.

Анотація:

Colobine monkeys are known for the anatomical complexity of their stomachs, making them distinct within the primate order. Amongst foregut fermenters, they appear peculiar because of the occurrence of two different stomach types, having either three (‘tripartite’) or four (‘quadripartite’, adding the praesaccus) chambers. The functional differences between tri and quadripartite stomachs largely remain to be explained. In this study, we aim to compare the apparent digestibility (aD) in tripartite and quadripartite colobines. Hence, we measured the aD in two colobine species, Nasalis larvatus (quadripartite) and Trachypithecus cristatus (tripartite), in two zoos. We also included existing colobine literature data on the aD and analysed whether the aD of fibre components is different between the stomach types to test the hypothesis of whether quadripartite colobines show higher aD of fibre components than tripartite colobines did. Our captive N. larvatus specimen had a more distinctively varying nutrient intake across seasons with a larger seasonal variation in aD than that of a pair of T. cristatus, which mostly consumed commercial foods with a lower proportion of browse and less seasonal variation. We observed higher aD of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) in the N. larvatus specimen, suggesting a higher gut capacity of N. larvatus provided by the additional praesaccus forestomach chamber. Based on the analysis of literature data for aD, we also found that quadripartite species achieved higher fibre digestibility at similar dietary fibre levels compared with tripartite species, supporting the hypothesis that the additional gut capacity offered by the praesaccus facilitates a longer retention and hence more thorough microbial fermentation of plant fibre.

Анотація:

Exceptional species and phenotypic diversity commonly are attributed to ecological opportunity (EO). The conventional EO model predicts that rates of lineage diversification and phenotypic evolution are elevated early in a radiation only to decline later in response to niche availability. Foregut fermentation is hypothesized to be a key innovation that allowed colobine monkeys (subfamily Colobinae), the only primates with this trait, to successfully colonize folivore adaptive zones unavailable to other herbivorous species. Therefore, diversification rates also are expected to be strongly linked with the evolution of traits related to folivory in these monkeys. Using dated molecular phylogenies and a dataset of feeding morphology, I test predictions of the EO model to evaluate the role of EO conferred by foregut fermentation in shaping the African and Asian colobine radiations. Findings from diversification methods coupled with colobine biogeographic history provide compelling evidence that decreasing availability of new adaptive zones during colonization of Asia together with constraints presented by dietary specialization underlie temporal changes in diversification in the Asian but not African clade. Additionally, departures from the EO model likely reflect iterative diversification events in Asia.

Nous tentons de decrire les caracteristiques socio-ecologiques de c. Satanas, d'etablir si elles sont specispecifiques ou soumises a des variations interpopulationnelles et comparons nos resultats (gabon, makande) avec ceux obtenus sur une population voisine du gabon et sur une du cameroun. La structure sociale est de type multimales. La cohesion des groupes est assuree par les relations sociales (epouillage) et par des comportements de contact. Reseaux de proximite spatiale et d'epouillage traduisent trois affinites : les males adultes interagissent entre eux, les immatures aussi, tandis que les femelles adultes interagissent entre elles et assurent le lien entre les classes d'age. Le role de ces femelles dans la cohesion du groupe et leur tolerance des comportements alloparentaux suggere une organisation matrilineaire. Mais les liens relationnels entre males adultes et le fait que males et femelles emigrent suggerent des caracteristiques patrilineaires. L'emigration en sous-groupes rend l'organisation sociale originale et rappelle la notion de communaute au sein de laquelle s'effectuent des fissions-fusions. C. Satanas est essentiellement granivore et l'exploitation du milieu varie selon les ressources et leur repartition. Domaines vitaux et deplacements sont plus importants a la makande ou l'exploitation semi-nomadique du milieu, les faibles densites de colobes et le faible taux de natalite pourraient resulter de la composition floristique de la foret. La dominance des caesalpiniaceae et les caracteristiques phenologiques de leur fructification accentuent la penurie des ressources en grande saison seche et provoquent des periodes critiques. De facon stochastique, ceci pourrait induire des chutes recurrentes de la population. Les caracteristiques socioecologiques et morpho-anatomiques de c. Satanas soulignent sa position clef dans la phylogenie des colobes africains, il pourrait etre la forme la plus proche de leur ancetre.

Nous décrivons un colobome papillaire isolé associé à une néphropathie évoluant vers l'insuffisance rénale terminale. Cette association est retrouvée chez trois membres d'une même famille sur trois générations successives. L'unique ponction biopsie pratiquée sur la fille du probant montre des lésions de type hyalinose segmentaire et focale ainsi qu'une sclérose interstitielle. L'hypothèse d'une troisième association, celle du syndrome de Parsonage et Turner reste en suspens. La revue de la littérature nous permet d'affirmer l'originalité de ce syndrome oculo-rénal. Cette association oculo-rénale ne serait pas fortuite. Son caractère hérédiataire orienterait vers un trouble constitutionnel.

The Colobines are a group of Afroeurasian monkeys that exhibit extraordinary behavioural and ecological diversity. With long tails and diverse colourations, they are medium-sized primates, mostly arboreal, that are found in many different habitats, from rain forests and mountain forests to mangroves and savannah. Over the last two decades, our understanding of this group of primates has increased dramatically. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the current research on colobine populations, including the range of biological, ecological, behavioural and societal traits they exhibit. It highlights areas where our knowledge is still lacking, and outlines the current conservation status of colobine populations, exploring the threats to their survival. Bringing together international experts, this volume will aid future conservation efforts and encourage further empirical studies. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in primatology, biological anthropology and conservation science. Additional online resources can be found at www.cambridge.org/colobines.

Abstract This paper presents the kinematic and mechanical design of Manus Colobi, a robotic mechanical hand developed for industrial applications. A review of the design constraints and a general discussion of the objective tasks to be performed by the hand are first presented. This leads to a description of the kinematic properties and the mechanical design of the hand. Applications envisioned for the hand are robust industrial tasks involving rather large forces which justifies the new design presented here.
