Born on 28th April, 1783, John Lee was educated at St. John*s College, Cambridge, where he was fifth wrangler in 1806. He obtained a LL.D degree in 1816, after which he travelled extensively in Europe and the East. He assumed the surname Lee in lieu of his patronymic by royal licence in 1815, in compliance with the will of his maternal uncle William Lee Antonie of Colworth House, Bedfordshire, devisee of Sir George Lee, Bt. Sir George being without issue on his death in 1827, the whole of the property devolved on John Lee.

Cliff Salter made a notable contribution to geology by amassing a very large collection of fossils from the Carboniferous Limestone at Cliff Quarry (NCR ST541568), Compton Martin, in the Mendip Hills, Somerset. The fossils from this quarry have been known for a long time (e.g. Sibly 1906, p.351), but Cliff Salter's meticulous work resulted in one of the largest collections of Carboniferous Limestone fossils ever made from a single locality.

The article analyses the book collection of Heinrich Johann Grotzian, a Livonian Protestant pastor living in Derpt in the 17th century. Part of his library was included in the library of Theophan Prokopovich and later in the library of the Novgorod Theological Seminary. The reconstruction was carried out on the basis of the manuscript Inventory of the library of the Novgorod Theological Seminary for 1929/1930, compiled by Vladimir Vladimirovich Maikov, a member of the manuscripts department of the State Public Library in Leningrad, and the books identified in the collections of the Russian National Library.

The Biblioteca degli Uffizi acts as a documentary ‘black box’ for all the notable collecting that has taken place in Florence during the past 500 years. The Library’s collections stretch from the autograph 22-year diary of the 15th-century painter Neri di Bicci and the different editions of Vasari’s Lives of the painters, through the inventories and lists of objects acquired and held successively by the Medici, the House of Hapsburg-Lorraine and the new Italian united kingdom, and to all the memoirs and plans and catalogues of the directors and ‘royal antiquarians’ of the Uffizi Gallery. In addition it contains major works on art history, artists, public and private art collections, exhibitions and many related topics. The Library holds 77,000 printed books and more than 440 manuscripts; its catalogue is shared with the IRIS consortium of art history and humanities libraries and contributes to artlibraries.net through this shared bibliographic database. Several digitisation projects have already been completed or are currently in progress.

A series of high-profile thefts of museum specimens in recent decades highlights the vul- nerability of collections to such incidents. With the increasing value of mineral specimens, mineral collections may increasingly become the target of such thefts. Although system- ic funding and staffing issues at many institutions limits the practicality of implementing more sophisticated security measures, there are a number of low-cost measures that can be implemented to augment existing security measures and increase relative collection se- curity. These include physical actions such as limiting access to collection specimens and space by using locking cabinets, safes, and locking collection spaces, as well as behavioural approaches such as controlling information, escorting visitors, and restricting what items can be brought into collection spaces. Knowing the value of specimens can also allow one to understand where to concentrate security measures. As outreach is used to teach the public about collections and specimens, measures should be taken to limit the distribution of monetary value and the security measures implemented.

This literature places less emphasis on how the risk taken in the creation of art is assumed and borne by the agents who compose this market. Inspired by the publication “Art Collectors as Angel Investors” (2023) by Whitaker and Kräussl, this study examines a real collection of a Brazilian collector to verify whether the investment strategy employed in the purchase and sale of the works in the collection aligns with the definition of an angel investor presented in the reference article.

This book, however, shows just how much a dedicated investigative journalist can add to the record, details that are not only useful in trying to understand the mentality of Breitwieser (by no means an isolated case as this account shows) and even more useful in showing the loopholes in the investigations, the lack of coordination between countries, and the sheer ineptitude of many institutions in securing their collections. Noce, editor of the cultural section of the French newspaper Libération, has joined the select company of Karl Meyer (articles in the New York Times) and Peter Watson who have added greatly to our knowledge of how the illicit trade works. Josef Ryš (* 1879, † 1960) was a high school professor at the Real School in Jevíčko, a prominent local researcher - mineralogist and head of the local physical education unit Sokol. Between 1909 and 1958, he published a total of 11 works on the geological and mineralogical conditions of the greater Jevíčko area. He has collaborated with important institutions, such as the Moravian Museum in Brno, Masaryk University in Brno, Charles University in Prague and the National Museum in Prague. He has built a quality collection of Czech and world minerals, of which a total of 913 pieces are stored in the collection of the National Museum in Prague. From this collection, 65 minerals were selected for the new permanent mineralogical exhibition of the National Museum.

In addition to larger collections of Mapuche artifacts acquired during the prolonged stays of Milan Stuchlík (1932–1980) and Vaclav Šolc (1919–1995) in Araucania, Chile, during the 1960s and 1970s, the Náprstek Museum also houses two smaller collections of Mapuche jewellery. The first four jewels were purchased from Eduard Tauer in 1896 and two more pieces were acquired in 2024 from the estate of diplomat Stanislav Svoboda (1926–2015). This article serves as the first introduction to the Mapuche jewellery collection originating from these two collectors. It examines the use, age, and material composition of the artifacts and the collectors responsible for the acquisitions and compares this collection with the Mapuche jewellery collection in the Weltmuseum Vienna. Furthermore, the article outlines potential avenues for further research.

ORION is a digital art history research-oriented project focused on the study of art collections and collectors in Portugal, supported on a relational database management system. Besides the obvious advantage of organizing and systematizing an enormous amount of information, promoting its analysis, this database was specifically designed to highlight the relationships between data. Its relational capacity is not only one of the most relevant features of ORION, but a differentiating quality, one step forward in comparison to other international databases and studies that use digital methodologies. This article discusses the methods and the advantages of using ORION in research related to the history of collecting, art markets and provenance of art objects in Portugal, where it is the very first time that an approach such as this is intended, looking for a systematization of data that paves the way to the emergence of new research questions. Furthermore, and because ORION aims to share the data and knowledge with other projects, institutions and researchers, the database uses different international standards, such as data structure (CIDOC-OIC and Getty-CDWA), controlled vocabulary (Iconclass, Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN), and Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)) and communication and exchange of information (CIDOC-CRM).

This article explores the collection of archival records in the nineteenth century and its impact on historical archives. The discussion begins with archival theory’s traditional distinction between collections and archives. Where collections are broadly defined to include artifacts, books, media, documents and various materials, contrasting with the more specific categorisations within the archival community of “archives” (or “fonds”) and “artificial collections”. In the context of contemporary archival practices that increasingly embrace collecting while simultaneously questioning the objectivity of archives, the Jacob Westin Collection and the Axel Oxenstierna Collection, along with the Swedish Autograph Society’s Journal from 1879 to 1898, are examined. The study places special emphasis on the ef­fects of these collections on archives, particularly from the perspectives of provenance and original order. During the nineteenth century, the popularity of collecting autographs and historical documents surged, influencing how archival records were managed. The study highlights how collectors have profoundly influenced public archives through acquisition methods including purchase, exchange, and at times, theft, often reorganising materials according to their own systems. It encapsulates discussions on the differentiation between collections and archives, the role of collectors in preserving historical materials and considerations in archival practices.

An essay about a researcher who made a significant contribution to the formation of zoological collections and faunal research in Zhytomyr and Kyiv zoological centres. Yuriy Prozhyha collected numerous specimens of mammals, birds, and insects in various locations, primarily in the vicinity of Zhytomyr and several districts of Zhytomyr region (1914–1922, 1929–1932), as well as in Kyiv (1928) and Uzbekistan (1929). His mammal collections include 116 osteological specimens housed in the Paleontological Department of NMNH, NAS of Ukraine. He also wrote two articles on beavers (1928, 1929) and a book on plant protection from pests (1931).

One enormous problem confronting visual resources (VR) collections internationally is the time, labor and expense of converting or creating digital collections while maintaining and even adding to the analog collection. It will take considerable time to reach the critical digital mass that will begin to reflect the richness already available in our analog collections. The analog collections must be maintained in tandem with the digital development. As one might logically conclude, this is twice the work. It is improbable that any of us will see our staffs doubling. This underscores the need to define clear goals for digital collection development that are reasonable given the level of staffing and the need for continuation of analog services for the foreseeable future. This conundrum may have an up side in that it will tend to encourage resource sharing and consortial development of digital resources.

The paper presents the architecture of the control and statistical data collection system for solar thermal collectors, describing its operating principle and analysis of individual elements, in order to anticipate possible problems and find their solutions. Expanding functionality of the controller of solar thermal collector with online features one can collect data on solar thermal collectors performance in different regions. The paper describes the structure diagram, according to which the system will register operational parameters of the heating system and weather conditions. Data transfer mode, which allows avoiding instant database server load is offered. It is shown, that the simulation of the solar thermal collector operating cycle and optimization of recorded data stream allows over 14 times to reduce the amount of transferred data.

Abstract Although imatinib is highly effective in inducing remissions in CML patients, the long-term durability of response is not clear. Here we report updated results of a clinical trial investigating the feasibility and efficacy of collection and storage of PBSC from patients in complete cytogenetic remission (CCR) on imatinib, for use in autologous transplantation in the event of subsequent relapse. PBSC were collected from 36 patients [31 CP, 5 AP (at start of imatinib); median age 45 years (range 22–70); 21 males, 15 females; median time from diagnosis 25 months (mos) (6–90); median duration of imatinib treatment 13 mos (6–41); median time from CCR 7 mos (1–26)]. Patients were administered G-CSF (10μg/kg/day), and PBSC collection initiated on day +5 with a targeted minimum of 2x106 CD34+ cells/kg. Imatinib was continued during G-CSF administration and PBSC collection. The G-CSF dose was escalated in case of poor collection. The median number of CD34+ cells (106/kg) collected was 2.56 (0.31–6.19) with a median of 3 phereses (1–13). Five patients failed to collect the target number of CD34+ cells, achieving a median of 0.87x106 CD34+ cells after a median 5 collections. Seven patients required >6 collections to reach the target cell dose. There was no significant relationship between rapid (≤3) or slow (>3) collection, or failure to collect, and clinical characteristics such as age, sex, disease stage, prior interferon, time from diagnosis, time on imatinib, and duration of CCR. PBSC collections were evaluated for BCR/ABL contamination by cytogenetics and PCR (Q-PCR and nested RT-PCR). Ph+ cells were detected on cytogenetic examination in 1 or more collections from 5 patients and Ph- abnormal clones were detected in 4 patients. Patients with Ph+ PBSC were slower collectors than those with Ph- PBSC (median 8 vs. 3 collections, p=0.04). BCR/ABL mRNA was detected by PCR in 1 or more collection from 30 of 32 patients evaluated. Two patients, both with BCR/ABL mRNA detected in pre-mobilzation marrow, collected with a single PCR negative collection. Three patients had collections with low levels of BCR/ABL mRNA detected only with more sensitive nested RT-PCR. Of 134 separate collections analyzed, BCR/ABL mRNA was detected by Q-PCR in 113 (84%), by nested RT-PCR in 11 (8%), while 10 (8%) were PCR negative. Rapid collectors had significantly lower BCR/ABL mRNA levels in their collections compared to pre-mobilization marrow (p<0.05), whereas slow collectors did not show significant change in BCR/ABL levels. CD34+ cells isolated from PBSC showed significantly increased BCR/ABL mRNA levels compared with total nucleated cells (BCR/ABL:B2M ratio of 0.0006±0.0002 for NC vs. 0.03±0.01 for CD34+ cells, p=0.002). PBSC were injected into NOD/SCID mice to evaluate for presence of BCR/ABL+ progenitors capable of in vivo engraftment. Human cell engraftment was confirmed by flow cytometry in 3 of 4 patients, and BCR/ABL mRNA was detected in engrafted cells by Q-PCR. Our results indicate that cytogenetically negative PBSC collections can be obtained from CML patients receiving imatinib, but that mobilization is relatively poor. Rapid collectors have reduced BCR/ABL+ cell contamination in PBSC collections, and PCR negative collections are possible. However, the majority of PBSC products show evidence of persistent malignant stem cells. Additional strategies to enhance reliability and rapidity of collection and further deplete BCR/ABL+ stem cells in the PBSC product need to be explored.

The article continues the historical outline of graphic art collecting in Russia and is concerned the 19th century. Over the course of this period, the circle of graphic art collectors has been significantly expanding and democratizing, with private individuals taking a leading position in this process; the graphic collections of newly established state museums and educational institutions were formed on the base of private collections. Many collectors demonstrated a decisive turn towards Russian graphics, as well as to thematic collections of prints focused on portraits, views, or book illustrations: extensive collections of drawings and prints were present in complex thematic collections. In the second half of the century, the role of art collections and collectors-connoisseurs increased. With the emergence of Art Nouveau, collectors turned their attention to Japanese prints, posters, book design elements as items of collecting; small collection of drawings for aesthetic pleasure became an important feature of the period.

Purpose: This study aims to determine the meanings, motives and experiences of the collectors in collecting Vinyl. Research methods: This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection technique was done by interviewing. Informants in this study are three Vinyl collectors who have been collecting Vinyl for over 5 years and owning hundreds of Vinyl pieces. Results and discussion: The results in this study are (1) the meaning of collecting Vinyl is a representation of the collector’s love for music, Vinyl is a part of life, collecting Vinyl creates an addiction, Vinyl is a basic need, Vinyl is a daily routine, and Vinyl is a transaction tool. (2) The collector’s motive in collecting Vinyl is to appreciate musical works, want to contribute to the preservation of musical works, Vinyl a source of economy, physical factors and sound quality produced by higher quality Vinyl, Vinyl artwork that has aesthetic valued, history value, and the rarity of Vinyl. (3) Collectors’ experience in collecting Vinyl, namely consistency from the past until now collecting Vinyl, continuing to add to the Vinyl collection which numbered in the hundreds to thousands, making sacrifices in terms of finance, other basic needs, and social life in order to buy Vinyl, doing special and intensive care so that the sound and physical quality of Vinyl is maintained, providing a special room for Vinyl collections, and buying and selling and bartering transactions between Vinyl collectors. Implication: The development of technology made the world community switch to listening to music from Vinyl to digital platforms. However, there are still some people who are still loyal to use Vinyl as a medium for listening to music and collecting it.

The article focuses on the knowledge of the formation circumstances and development of folklore collections in Belarus in historical perspective. The history of collecting Belarusian folklore is explored, concentrating on the main ideas and the most influential collectors and groups of collectors. The research questions concern the main collection centers, gathering strategies, and their changes in accordance with the dominant state ideology and cultural policy. The study reveals that the growing interest in collecting folklore was closely connected with the process of national revival and the creation of the Belarusian state. Initiated by the passion of individual amateur collectors and local historians, the collection of folklore gradually became an important national task and was concentrated in the main scientific centers. Besides state ideology, the greatest influence on the formation of folklore collections, their form and content, is exerted by the goals and approaches of individuals. The personality, the level of education and age of the collector have a direct impact on the collection processes and, respectively, on the data obtained as a result.

Wet electrostatic precipitators (wet ESPs) are good options for effective control of PM2.5 emission. However, the common problems of uniform water film formed on rigid collector limited the applicability of typical wet ESPs, thus could be tend to cause "spark-over" and "back-corona". This research was designed to test the performance of the polypropylene fibrous as collection electrodes for PM2.5 control in wet ESP. Meanwhile, drop spreading feature and volume resistivity measurements of polypropylene fibrous collector were investigated. The results show that drop spreading existed in imbibitions experiments between hydrophobic fabrics contacted with water. The difference of spreading characteristics was accordance to the physical woven properties of fabrics. The relationship between the volume resistivity of polypropylene fibrous and the water addition rate has been investigated. The secondary current by polypropylene collection electrode was 5~20 percent higher than that by FRP. The average number collection efficiencies by polypropylene collector amounted to 89.21% for PM2.5 when the gas residence time was 1.33s at 60kV. The relationship between water addition rate and average number collection efficiency was not more regular than other factors such as gas treatment time or applied voltage.

Mr Samuel Carrington of Wetton, Staffordshire, was a careful collector of Carboniferous fossils over many years. In particular, he collected many fine and unusual examples of brachiopods, including several new species described by Thomas Davidson (mostly in 1863); some of these remain unknown from other localities and with insecure classifications. The value of Carrington's material lies in the detailed notes on localities and associated faunas which accompany his fossils, and which Davidson commonly quoted in his publications. Several of these notes remain with Carrington specimens in the collection of material figured by Davidson in his classic Palaeontographical Society Monographs, now housed in the British Museum (Natural History).

In May 1975 the newly-created North East Fife District Council inherited museum collections in the burghs of Cupar, Newburgh and St Andrews. All three museum collections had suffered years of neglect through lack of curatorial care. In late 1982 the district council appointed a curator whose priority tasks were the cataloguing and conservation of existing collections. The museum service moved into its present accommodation in Cupar (the old police station) in December 1984. Since then cataloguing and conservation work has been fully operational. In November 1984 a Manpower Services Commission team was appointed, including a part-time geologist. 1 joined the team in April 1985. Since only the Cupar and Newburgh collections contain geological material, this account will not consider the St Andrews collection further.

COLLECTIONS OF invertebrate fossils are commonly maintained in museums, at universities, and by individual researchers and interested private collectors. Twenty years ago, the Committee on North American Resources in Invertebrate Paleontology (CONARIP) estimated that there more than 550 institutions housed invertebrate paleontological macro- and micro- fossil collections (Glenister, 1977). Historically, collections have been developed, managed and maintained by paleontologists as a resource for their research (e.g., museum curator or university faculty) (Hebda, 1985). Since the early 1970s, the field of collection management has evolved and the increased professionalization of collection manager positions has been instrumental in improving the management and preservation of invertebrate fossils as well as other natural history collections (Cato, 1991; Simmons, 1993; Simmons, 1995).
