After neglecting the temporal aspect of social groups for a long time, a growing body of research in social psychology now apprehends groups as entities that move through time and suggests that people’s representations of the collective past and future, in addition to being continuously (re)constructed according to the present, are relevant for understanding current collective behaviours. This new line of research has recently led to the idea of a collective mental time travel (CMTT) -i.e., the collective equivalent of individual mental time travel, that would gather the cross-influences between people’s representations of the group’s present, past, and future. This thesis aimed to examine the dynamics and consequences of these CMTT in light of perceived societal anomie -i.e., perceiving that current society is disintegrated and disregulated. Through nine correlational and experimental studies, we found that perceiving anomie within current society (a) lead individuals to reinterpret the national past (e.g., even more positive representations of the former French president Charles de Gaulle) (b) fostered the projection of negative, anxiety-inducing national futures and (c) influenced the relationships between people’s representations of the national past and future (e.g., declinist representations of the nation across time that were steeper when current society was perceived as highly anomic). Moreover, these CMTT were in turn associated with people’s current support for and intention to engage in various types of actions aimed at defending France (including anti-immigration actions)

The escalation of environmental exposure factors and the way in which they are evolving in time and space are creating both scientific controversy and uncertainty over the potential health risks for people today and in the future. There is a need for a preventive and coercive liability regime based on the precautionary principle, one which is able to meet the specific temporospatial nature of the emerging risks and capable of envisaging the potential for cross-generational damage in all its dimensions. The introduction of this type of liability will require prior recognition of the right to life of the generations of tomorrow. The admissibility of a claim would involve extending the concept of personal interest to include the concept of societal interest under criminal law, and the concept of group interest pursuant to civil law. Furthermore, the cross-generational nature of the risk is justification for the absence of any statutory limitation period for preventive liability claims. In civil law, this new liability model will also overturn the three requirements for bringing a claim in tort. This may open the door for new categories of claimant to bring a claim for preventive liability on their own behalf as well as on behalf of the generations of tomorrow, as part of a group claim for defending and protecting the objective right to life of future generations. It could be used to defend the legal rights of the generations of tomorrow before a specialist jurisdiction dedicated solely to public health law, thus paving the way for jurisdictional reform
Scott, Angelique. "Truth in collective investment fund advertising : evidence on future performance and fund flows." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50207.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study project, the performance and fund flows to open-end collective investment schemes available in South Africa that are advertised in the Personal Finance newspaper and Financial Mail magazine, are examined. The sample consists of 34 open-ended unit trust funds from 4 different asset managers. Two main objectives are addressed: the first main objective is to test whether collective investment schemes advertisements are used to signal superior management skills by examining the performance of the funds prior to placing the advertisement and measuring the performance in the post-advertising period. The second main objective is to test whether advertising is used to attract more fund flows to the funds. The results indicate that the fund managers advertised their funds at a time when the funds were under-performing, showing no significant superior performance. In the one-year period following the advertisement their performance was marginally better than the bench marked performance. The results indicate that superior fund management skills exist and that timing of the placement of the advertisement is important. The fund flow analysis shows that advertised funds attract significantly more money in comparison to the funds in a control group with similar characteristics. Once again the results could be attributed to superior fund management skills or the timing of the marketing department.

This research intends to study the future of adolescents in foster care within the collective imaginary of psychologists. The study can contribute to the debate over the conduction of the victims of social suffering to foster care shelters by addressing a professional group aware of the importance of adolescence during the personal life. This approach consists, from the methodological point of view, in structured interviews conducted with eight psychologists using the story-drawing procedure with a theme. Such meetings were registered under the form of transferential narratives, which, along with the drawings and the stories, were considered through the psychoanalytical method. This way, it was possible to reach the interpretative production of three affective-emotional meaning fields or relative unconsciousness: Bound to fail, Saved by Magic and With help and will. The general framework reveals a trend of the participants to consider that the sheltered adolescent will hardly come off from a miserable future. Thus, it is clear that these professionals position themselves critically to the foster care shelter reality, conceiving them as institutions that are not able to fulfill their social function satisfactorily

Adolescent delinquency represents a significant threat to the health and future of developing persons. Due to the important implications of adolescent problem behaviors, it is essential that we understand the complex mechanisms in the life and mind of a developing person that may lead to these behavior problems in adolescence. I proposed that early family instability, including residential moves and changes in household composition, would be a primary predictor of adolescent problem behaviors, including risk-taking and externalizing behaviors. This relation was predicted to be mediated by future orientation. When young children are faced with uncertainty, they may develop a shorter-term view of their own life. Therefore, family instability is predicted to influence the developing orientation to the future, which is predicted to be related to problem behaviors in adolescence. Deviant peer association and family routine were predicted to be moderators in the model. The results reveal a significant association between early family instability and adolescent externalizing behavior. This association is significant while controlling for later family instability and other demographic variables, such as socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and child IQ. This indicates that early family instability is directly related to adolescent behavior beyond the effects of continuing instability and other individual factors. Additionally, the level of future orientation was associated with adolescent risk-taking behavior for boys but not for girls. This indicates that for boys, lack of thoughts about one's future is predictive of risky behaviors in adolescence. Early family instability was not significantly related to future orientation, precluding future orientation as a mediator in the relation between early family instability and later problem behaviors. Family routine and peer deviance were not found to be significant moderators in this study. The results of this study indicate the important role family instability plays in adolescent behavior problems. These results demonstrate that experiences in the first five years of a child's life have potentially long-term effects on the individual. Additionally, future orientation appears to be a significant predictor of adolescent risk-taking behavior for boys. As risk-taking behavior may be detrimental to the individual's life and future, it is important to understand factors that predict risk taking. Future studies should examine the development of future orientation and its role in adolescent adjustment.

The expectation for ever-present broadband connectivity is growing along with the proliferation of "always-on" mobile devices such as PDAs, laptops and cell phones. The International Telecommunications Union predicts people worldwide will soon live in "ubiquitous network societies," where interconnected appliances and devices provide relevant content and information whatever the location of the user. While some public spaces currently offer wireless internet, broadband subscribers typically lose guaranteed connections each time they leave their access points. One increasingly popular solution, shared broadband signals, relies on a model of peer-to-peer networking. Instead of information passing from "one to many," it may travel from "many to many." This form of viral networking is taking hold at the grassroots level of media activism, as well as within the elite realm of venture capitalism. This study encompasses both semi-structured qualitative interviews and a survey in order to gain a deeper understanding of a complex phenomenon: the potential for peer-to-peer signal sharing to expand digital inclusion in the United States. The research approaches WiFi signal sharing as more than a promising "last mile" technology. Rather, it finds that WiFi sharing communities have the potential to disrupt the current political economy of telecommunications by privileging digital inclusion, innovation and localism over profits and globalization. This research extends knowledge by delving into the demand-side of the peer networking movement as a means of better understanding potential pathways to connectivity. The interview findings reflect the perspectives of people who opt to share their WiFi signals, policymakers, incumbent ISPs, and both non-profit and for-profit entities that facilitate peer-to-peer networking. Local officials stressed the need for wireless community activists to work with residents of disenfranchised neighborhoods, who stand to benefit the most from free broadband access. Federal-level informants suggested that high quality spectrum--so called "white spaces"--could enable peer-to-peer networks to transmit more powerful WiFi signals. Responses to a questionnaire disseminated to mesh network members suggest that these grassroots communities facilitate public participation in technology, as well as encourage civic engagement. The study concludes with recommendations--geared toward federal policymakers, local officials, ISPs and broadband activists--for supporting and sustaining peer-to-peer networking communities.

This paper examines recent advances in new media technology and the profound effect that the digital turn has had on the way in which archivists and public historians preserve and present the past. Included is an investigation of the process of digitization, and the creation of digital databases that addresses concerns regarding authenticity in the digital age. As the history consuming public has grown increasingly reliant on digital technology it is essential for public historians to use new media as a way to embrace the public in a historical dialogue. Yet, the public is interested in a history that is far different than that which is produced in the academy and it seems as though historians have drifted away from the public eye. So how should historians connect with a public that finds their work largely inaccessible without having to compromise the integrity of their scholarship? This thesis argues that new media technology can help bridge the gap between the professional history done in the academy and public history that relies on community engagement. Looking to public science at the turn of the twentieth century, this paper shows how including the public in scholarly discourse has been a point of contention for over a century. Understanding how men of science attempted to blend professional and vernacular science in the nineteenth century provides insight for public historians trying to reach out to diverse publics today. Lastly, this paper will show how one institution in particular, the Wagner Free Institute of Science, has used new media throughout its existence as a way to bridge the gap between professional and public science.

The study we have undertaken is an attempt to understand how members of Brazilian society consider themselves and their social organization. To achieve this, we carried out an analysis of the Brazilian presidential elections of 1998, taking the act of voting as a social duty illustrative of the social values of the members of this society. We suggest that it is imaginary significations which influence electoral decisions, in attributing political legitimacy to one candidate rather than another. The winning candidate who is seen as the authentic holder of socially valued characteristics becomes the symbol of the nation par excellence. Among the characteristics which contribute to his political legitimacy is that of being a modern icon, who will lead his country towards a greater future in accordance with the dominant political values. We consider that the candidate participates in this way in the construction of an official society which would allow the country to be included in the league of democratic nations, which nevertheless present enormous differences with the practices of the main political figures in Brazil, including the exclusion of subordinates from any kind of decision-making. Brazilian electors, believing they had elected a candidate who would lead Brazil to its glorious future, maintain, paradoxically, the link with the country's colonial past. We regard this paradox as one of the greatest dilemma of Brazilian society, as it is by means of this process of political legitimazation tha a socially unequal structure is sustained despite the internal dynamism of its institutions

Affiliates of the United States settlement house movement provided a historical precedent for engaged, community-centered museum practice. Their innovations upon the social survey, a key sociological data collection and data visualization tool, as well as their efforts to interpret results via innovative, culturally democratic exhibition techniques, had a contemporary impact on both museum practice and the history of social work. This impact resonates in the socially-responsive work of community museums of the recent past.
