Collecting recipes was an established tradition that continued in elite English households throughout the eighteenth century. This thesis is on medical recipes and advice, and it addresses the evolution of recipe collecting from the seventeenth century and throughout the eighteenth century. It investigates elite domestic medicine within a cultural history of medicine framework and uses social and material history approaches to reveal why elites continued to collect medical recipes, given the commercialisation of medicine. This thesis contends that the meaning of domestic medicine must be understood within a wider context of elite healthcare in order to appreciate how the recipe collecting tradition evolved alongside cultural shifts, and shifts within the medical economy. My re-appraisal of the meaning of domestic medicine gives elite healthcare a clearer role within the narrative of the social history of medicine. Elite healthcare was about choice. Wealthy individuals had economic agency in consumerism, and recipe compilers interacted with new sources of information and products; recipe books are evidence of this consumer engagement. In addition to being household objects, recipe books had cultural significance as heirlooms, and as objects of literacy, authority, and creativity. A crucial reason for the continuation of the recipe collecting tradition was due to its continued engagement with cultural attitudes towards social obligation, knowledge exchange, taste, and sociability as an intellectual pursuit. Positioning the household as an important space of creativity, experiment, and innovation, this thesis reinforces domestic medicine as an important part of the interconnected histories of science and medicine. This thesis moreover contributes to the social history of eighteenth-century England by demonstrating the central role domestic medicine had in elite healthcare, and reveals the elite reception of the commercialisation of medicine from a consumer perspective through an investigation of personal records of intellectual pastimes and patient experiences.

The influence of the architect Philip Webb (1831-1915) on Arts and Crafts houses, or the so-called English Domestic revival, has been, generally acknowledged for many years, yet this dissertation is the first full-scale scholarly study-of his philosophy, and contains the first comprehensive, presentation of his work in his chosen field of domestic architecture. Webb's life, thought, and work were bound into a complete unity by his devotion to architecture, his love for the English landscape and its old buildings, and his views on art and society. For convenience and clarity, however, the thesis is divided into three main parts, the first of which is concerned with his life, including his involvement with William Morris in, the firm commonly known as Morris and Company, with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and with socialism. The second part is an investigation of Webb's architectural philosophy and its evolution, based on his own comments in letters and supported by evidence from his buildings, and of the clients who accepted it and of his relationships with them, and, with his assistants and contractors. The third part is devoted to the history, description, and analysis of Webb's houses and major enlargements, illustrated by 230 plates including plans of most of the buildings discussed. The dissertation demonstrates that Webb made an early and important contribution towards" preservation of "the architectural heritage, including' houses of all sizes, in''Britain and elsewhere; that he was one of the most original and influential architectural thinkers of the nineteenth century; and that he evolved a challenging philosophy which escaped from prevailing revivalism to produce, in his own hands and those of his followers, vigorous, inventive, and pleasing houses of national and local character.

The turn of the Century in this country brought with it the introduction and ensuing growth of water-born trade markets, facilitating the establishment of a series of metropolitan hubs scattered along the coastline. The subsequent hundred years has seen a major increase in population within these areas accompanied by an economic shift away from maritime trade. Older ports have been abandoned, leaving behind antiquated urban infrastructure. The subsequent dismantling of these vast waterfront industrial areas has provided an opportunity for the reconfiguration of these spaces and the implementation of new urban and landscape strategies. Through a recycling of the existing fabric and introduction of new uses, many cities have revitalized their industrial wastelands and integrated these areas within the existing urban fabric. Other coastal cities have merely overlooked these neglected districts and focused development in their periphery, transforming these former economic focal point into physical and typological barriers.

The residential building sector currently makes up one-half of the total U.S. building industry; yet less than five percent of residential construction involves architectural services. This irrelevancy has only further distanced the already unfamiliar role of American architects from their clientele. Domestic spaces in production homes are defined by continuous generic surfaces. This thesis recognizes the latent architectural opportunities that current domestic surfaces provide. The thesis aims to establish a framework of design methods and building strategies for creatively engaging common domestic surfaces. Using laminate as a case study, the project advocates that such methods and strategies may be implemented to advance the seen value of architectural design in the American home. The framework supports sustaining these methods by weaving material working processes with industry trades and manufacturers. The thesis should be viewed as a generative seed in which future research and innovation may be continued with a similar focus.

The second half of the twentieth century was a time of change marked by increased global mobility and the exchange of ideas, a context framed by the diversification of approaches that occurred at the confluence of modernism and postmodernism. Responding to this context of dispersal and fragmentation, the Canadian-born educator Alvin Boyarsky (1928-1990) acted as a collector of ideas, drawings and people, and, consequently, a promoter of novel forms of architectural pedagogy that affected architectural culture worldwide. His Transatlantic web of educational, curatorial and publishing venues absorbed new disciplinary discourses and propelled careers of protagonists like Zaha Hadid, Bernard Tschumi, and Rem Koolhaas, who in turn influenced architectural ideas and built work around the world. As Boyarsky’s pedagogical experiments poured into practice, they engendered a form of architecture that distanced itself from any national or professional confines, thriving instead on international displacement of people, ideas and images. Boyarsky embraced this peripatetic context – the growing national and professional mobility of architectural ideas, artifacts and educators – allowing his collections of postcards, books, and drawings to act as itinerant sites of architectural production worldwide. His pedagogical models echoed these collections, embracing estrangement, opposition and resistance not only as pragmatic opportunities conducive to global economic change, but also as engines of disciplinary transformation that erased boundaries between academia and practice, the local and the global, and production and consumption. In blurring such boundaries these pedagogical models imploded traditional institutional, national and disciplinary structures and heralded a truly international era of architectural education and practice. Rather than mere globalisation of architecture, they signalled a more nuanced estrangement of architecture – a time when strangers and foreignness resurfaced as globally significant categories whose diverse narratives were only reconciled within the loose framework of a collection and the constantly shifting desires of its collector.

This thesis examines architectural discourse and spatial practices as manifestations and experiences of order in eighteenth-century Qing dynasty China. It reviews the development of the historiography of Chinese architectural history as an academic discipline, and proposes that in the Qing there was an unprecedented rupture between domestic architectural style from that of the court. An alternative design strategy in spatial planning and detailing was adopted. It is argued that the Qing architectural discourse, its intertextuality, was implicitly linked to the historical formation of the Qing self, and that it was pivotal to the rise of domestic culture. The study approaches architecture as historical statements and arguments, and focuses on the production of space, human agency, gender, and subject positioning in early modern China. The study analyzes the Yugong mansion, Beijing, the Rong mansion in the Qing novel The Dream of the Red Chamber, and the Manchu imperial city, as examples.

Par leur position sociale, les parlementaires constituaient la catégorie la plus influente et l’une des plus riches au XVIIIème siècle. Ils jouissaient également d’un prestige culturel qui les plaçait dans l’élite cultivée du Siècle des Lumières. Ce travail vise à établir les rapports que les parlementaires bordelais entretinrent avec les arts et les milieux artistiques. La première partie évoque le Parlement de Bordeaux et le mode de vie de la noblesse robine notamment à travers la fortune de ses membres et la place du groupe parlementaire au sein des grands foyers intellectuels et culturels bordelais. La seconde partie est consacrée à l’étude du patrimoine bâti. Elle fait état des réalisations architecturales que commanditèrent les magistrats, grands bâtisseurs dont les imposants hôtels particuliers richement parés et les prestigieux châteaux viticoles, conservent encore le témoignage de leur puissance. La dernière partie se propose d’analyser le cadre de vie mobilier et les différentes collections rencontrées chez Messieurs du Parlement, qui montrent leur goût et traduisent les sensibilités artistiques de cette classe d’humanistes éclairés. L’étude s’achève par la mise en évidence d’un éventuel mécénat parlementaire
Through their social position, the members of Parliament were the most influential and the richest class in the eighteenth-century. They also had the cultural prestige that allowed them to be in the well educated elite of the Age of Enlightenment. This work is to establish the relationship between the members of the Bordeaux Parliament and the artistic environment. The first part discusses the Bordeaux Parliament and the robine nobility’s lifestyle specifically through the fortune of his members and the place of the parliamentary group within the cultural and intellectual elite of Bordeaux. The second parts deals with the study of the architectural heritage. It states the architects achievements financed by the magistrates "master builders", whose imposing, private, and richly adorned hotels plus the prestigious chateaux, still represent their power at the time. The last part analyses the furniture design and style and the different collections of the Members of Parliament, that show the taste and the artistic sensibilities of this enlightened class. The study ends by identifying a possible patronage from the members of Parliament

Le domaine de Kerazan, ensemble encore méconnu, fut légué à l’Institut de France par Joseph-Georges Astor en 1929. Situé en plein cœur du Pays Bigouden, sur la route de Pont-l'Abbé à Loctudy, le manoir de Kerazan est aujourd'hui l’un des fleurons de l’art de vivre au XIXe siècle, en sud Finistère. S’étalant du XVIe siècle à 1934, toute une collection d’arts décoratifs imprègne le manoir : toiles de maîtres régionaux, meubles bretons ou encore faïence de Quimper font vivre ce bâtiment comme ils font vivre le passé. Cet ensemble éclectique fut composé par une famille de trois collectionneurs : Joseph Astor II, Maire de Quimper de 1870 à 1886, conseiller général (de 1877 à 1895) et premier Sénateur républicain du Finistère, élu en 1890, et qui le restera jusqu’à son décès, en 1901. Son fils, Joseph-Georges Astor, docteur en droit, compléta la collection familiale tout au long de sa vie, avant de léguer - sous certaines conditions - l’ensemble de la collection à l’Institut de France. Dernier membre de cette famille de collectionneurs, beau-frère de Joseph Astor II et oncle de Joseph-Georges Astor, Georges Arnoult fut élu Député de la seconde circonscription de Quimper de 1876 à 1885. Le manoir et son domaine, connurent de très amples modifications, depuis la fin du XVe siècle à nos jours, et c’est ce que nous allons aborder ici, par le prisme de différentes disciplines, à savoir : histoire politique, histoire sociale et histoire des arts.Ce fut donc sous l’action de plusieurs familles et collectionneurs que le manoir fut modifié : tant dans son architecture, que dans ses décors intérieurs. Enfin, nous analyserons, l’histoire du goût au travers de l’exemple de la constitution de la collection de Kerazan. Peintures, mobiliers et objets quotidiens demeurés en l’état méritent-ils l’appellation de « collection bretonne » ? Quels étaient les objectifs de cette collection, quelles impulsions peuvent en être dégagées, et quels processus avons-nous pu déceler ? Ces derniers peuvent-ils être comparés à d’autres collections ?
The domain of Kerazan, still an underestimated set, was bequeathed to the Institute of France by Joseph-Georges Astor in 1929. Placed right in the heart of the Bigouden County, between Pont-l'Abbé and Loctudy, the manor house of Kerazan is today one of the jewels of the lifestyle in the XIXth century, in South Finistère. Spreading out from the XVIth century to 1934, a whole collection of decorative arts fills the manor house: paintings of regional masters, Breton furniture or still earthenware of Quimper make this building live as they make the past live. This eclectic set was made by a family of three collectors: Joseph Astor II, Mayor of Quimper from 1870 to 1886, member of the “General Council” (from 1877 to 1895) and first republican Senator of Finistère, elected in 1890 until he died in 1901. His son, Joseph-Georges Astor, Doctor of Law, continued the family collection throughout his life, before bequeathing - under certain conditions - the whole collection to the Institute of France.Last member of this family of collectors, brother-in-law of Joseph Astor II and uncle of Joseph-Georges Astor, Georges Arnoult was elected Member of Parliament of the second district of Quimper from 1876 to 1885.The manor house and its domain, have known very important modifications, since the end of the XVth century up to nowadays, and that is what we are going to study here, thanks to various subjects, that is to say : political history, social history and art history.Thus, the manor house was changed thanks to several families’ and several collectors’ actions in its architecture and also in its internal decoration. Finally, we will analyze, the history of taste through the example of the constitution of the collection of Kerazan. Do paintings, furniture and daily objects deserve the name of " Breton collection "?What were the goals of this collection, which trends can be observed, and which processes could we identify ? Can the latter be compared with other collections ?

Although current networked systems and online applications provide new opportunities for displaying and sharing personal information, they do not account for the underlying social contexts that frame such interactions. Existing categorization and management mechanisms for digital content have been designed to focus on the data they handle without much regard for the social circumstances within which their content is shared. As we share large collections of personal information over mediated environments, our tools need to account for the social scenarios that surround our interactions. This thesis presents Collections: an application for the management of digital pictures according to their intended audiences. The goal is to create a graphical interface that supports the creation of fairly complex privacy decisions concerning the display of digital photographs. Simple graphics are used to enable the collector to create a wide range of audience arrangements for her digital photographs. The system allows users to express their preferences in sharing their personal pictures over a disembodied environment such as the Web. The system also introduces an original approach to the presentation interface of photographic collections on the Web: a viewing application that takes into account the viewing history of the photographs and the integration of text comments to images.

Three communities of Green City, Olean, and Craig Missouri offer silent witness to the settlement patterns, economic development, and rise of popular housing in three different regions of the state. The buildings that remain provide tangible links to the past for citizens in each community. They also show how such disparate forces as evolving building technologies, mail-order catalogs, and the changing economic bases of these communities affected the design of local architecture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For the most part, the contribution of these buildings to an understanding of the social history of the state and the visual and aesthetic importance of these buildings to today's landscape have not been fully investigated or appreciated.This thesis seeks to develop an understanding of the full range of influences on local Missouri architecture through a study of three communities, all of which were established as a result of the coming of the railroad during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Green City, Olean, and Craig; Missouri were selected because they are representative of hundreds of small rural communities in Missouri.The time period 1880-1930 was chosen because the largest percentage of construction took place during this time period. As a result of the economic conditions set forth by the Great Depression and the gradual decline of the railroad, few buildings were constructed after 1930. During this fifty-year period each community was transformed from wilderness into an ordered, productive agricultural landscape. The dramatic change can be seen in the buildings constructed - from the temporary, hewn-log buildings of the first settlers, to frame buildings, to more substantial brick buildings reflecting the prosperity of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries coinciding with the growth and prosperity of the railroad. The thesis will investigate the hypothesis that a majority of the buildings constructed between 1880 and 1930 drew inspiration in design, form, and type from pattern books and mail-order catalogs rather than architects.

Manuscript recipe books come in all shapes and sizes and run from tens to hundreds of pages. Those from the eighteenth century are not exclusively culinary, also incorporating medical, veterinary and household recipes. Surviving examples are almost all from genteel or elite households, the people who had time and resources to create them, and are preserved in local archives or dedicated collections. This thesis examines the medical recipes in particular and considers their role at a time when alternatives to domestic healthcare were proliferating: increasing numbers of physicians and surgeons, a growth in apothecaries’ shops, commercial offerings such as proprietary medicines and a variety of irregular practitioners. Advice and remedies in print were also widely available in books, periodicals and newspapers. This is the largest study of eighteenth-century manuscript medical recipes yet undertaken, encompassing 241 collections and a total of 19,134 recipes. It begins by considering the collections themselves as material objects, rather than merely text, which no other major study in this area has done. The range of recipes and ailments are assessed against prevalent illnesses and causes of death, and variations in recipe types identified regionally and temporally. Detailed case studies of coughs and colds, gout, hydrophobia, diet drinks and Daffy’s Elixir illustrate the variety of ingredients and methods, as well as regimens for health and differences by gender and age. Examination of compilers and contributors of recipes demonstrates that both women and men were involved in this practice. Recipe exchange is delineated as a form of social currency requiring trust and reciprocity, and case studies show how knowledge circulated through three forms of network: familial, sociable and political. Finally, a major contribution of this thesis is that it identifies manuscript medical recipe collections as fulfilling four important functions for their compilers: oeconomic, symbolic, personalised and instrumental.

This paper examines issues of cultural, religious, and personal identity as reflected in domestic space, with the premise that expressions of the built environment evolve from concepts of self. These themes are particularly apparent in the case of residential architecture of the Moriscos, a cultural group of former Muslims forcibly converted to Christianity in 15th and 16th century Spain following the Reconquest. The Morisco houses of Granada from 1500-1570 reveal architectural forms resulting from acculturation as well as desires to protect identities and traditions in the midst of threat of cultural extinction. The architectural elements of these residences may be read as subversive attempts by a subordinated cultural group to conceal meaning from the dominant Christian population.

This dissertation explores the transformation of the Iranian home in twentieth century Iran. While surveying the socio political underpinnings and aesthetic ends of domesticity in Iranian culture from the early twentieth century through the first two decades of the revolution, this study also examines the impact of the Cold War on the daily life of Iranians. A showcase for the West's humanitarian efforts in the region, the "reform" of the Iranian home was first brought about by missionaries, architects, and other foreign parties. They engaged in a hybrid dialogue that helped bring about a reconfiguration of houses, home cultures, and behaviors and tastes in domestic life. The Point IV Program of the Truman administration exported American home life by establishing home economics schools for Iranian girls. Subsequently, the Iranian domestic market was flooded with a plethora of new home goods. The influx of new spaces and goods raised questions about the authenticity of Shiite daily life, indigenous taste, consumer culture, and gender relations. Since 1979 the focus on Iran's internal politics and its foreign relations has distracted attention from more subtle transformations, which took place prior to and in the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution. By looking at the roles and opinions of religious scholars, the Left, and the revolutionary elites this study can also be seen as one that re-examines the history of Iran's revolution through the lens of the everyday and private lives of people.

Subsequently, this dissertation details the ways in which new ideas regarding the relationship between public and private spaces were put forward by numerous architects, urban planners, and cultural critics both during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1941-1979) and in the two decades following the revolution. Finally, it shows how, since 1979, Iranians have contested the dichotomies of "public" and "private" as manifested in the Islamic Republic's texts, images, and actual physical spaces. Towards this end, this dissertation explores the interplay between foreign influences, religious rhetoric, gender roles, economic factors, and education as they intersect with taste, fashion, and architecture.

The thesis focuses on how well suited lifestyle patterns are to different spatial types currently existing in the domestic architecture of the Yoruba people of South Western Nigeria, and on meanings underlying space use, in traditional and contemporary housing. Changes in Yoruba domestic architecture are quite marked, with contemporary residences gaining new uses and losing others, due to the development of new buildings for some previously domestic activities. The contemporary condition, which is the main thrust of the research, is also typified by changes in income levels, family structure and education in post-colonial Nigeria. Although some studies have addressed these changes, the actual influence of traditional housing on new housing layouts is little researched. The hypothesis is that social changes will be manifested in transformations of the configuration of interior spaces and of space use with consequent spatial patterning that is a modification of the new within the existing. The analysis of activity and object locations proved valuable in unpacking social meanings embedded in the domestic space. A number of households were studied in four residential areas of Ile-Ife, each representative of distinct socio-economic groups and construction periods, using structured interviews, and analysis of the floor plans. The results revealed a core set of space labels specific to each spatial type, expressed in old spatial types that are absent from the new areas, in the new spatial types absent from older areas, and in the enduring spatial types found in all the areas. There was a strong correlation between house types and lifestyles, manifested via variations in income and education, and most obvious in differences in space use in the traditional orowa (central hall), and the kitchens and living rooms of new house types. Satisfaction with the domestic space was shaped by respondents' ideals, which were related to socio-economic factors. The study demonstrated a link between lifestyle and space use, and the effect of ideals on how the domestic space is perceived.

Breeding success in the broiler chicken has been accompanied by gait problems which are detrimental to productivity and welfare. Although these gait issues have not been reported to the same extent in Pekin ducks, there is concern that such problems will manifest if the duck continues on its current selection trajectory. In order to understand how changes in morphology due to selection have affected gait in both species, divergent lines were objectively assessed for gait using a pressure platform (12 birds per line at three, five and seven weeks of age). The broiler chicken was compared to the slower growing layer chicken and the Pekin duck to its slower growing ancestor, the mallard. Two breeding lines of Pekin duck were also assessed. After gait assessment, the leg bones (femur and tibiotarsus) were scanned by computed tomography to measure morphological changes which have occurred due to selection for high growth and meat yield. Results were analysed by ANOVA, accounting for age and sex. During walking, heavy lines walked at a slower velocity, displayed a wider stance and spent more time supporting their mass on both feet than their lighter conspecifics, strategies which are likely to improve balance. The foot angle while walking differed between lines; all duck lines rotated their feet internally whereas the layer chickens’ feet were aligned with the direction of travel. Conversely the broiler chicken rotated its feet externally by seven weeks of age. Morphologically, the main differences were between species. Duck lines reached adult leg size earlier than chickens, which may be a response to differing adaptive environments prior to domestication. This early cessation of bone growth in ducks may provide more opportunity for the bones to remodel to handle the loads imposed on them. Lower levels of porosity and a unique cortical architecture observed in ducks endow relatively greater bone strength. Bone curvature also differed between species; the tibiotarsus curved more laterally in ducks than in chickens and may be a swimming adaptation that hinders locomotion on land in the modern production bird. In order to improve the objectivity of selection for better gait in poultry, the genetic parameters of gait components selected on the basis of results in this thesis were estimated using a linear mixed model in a population of Pekin ducks of known pedigree. As they are a simpler measure, similar or improved heritability estimates were estimated for these gait components when compared with the standard commercial gait score which is based on a subjective view of walking ability. Intense selection for economic traits has altered gait in similar ways in both species. To improve gait in poultry, greater breeding success may be achieved by focussing on those components of gait which have changed through selection, rather than using a subjective overall visual gait score. Furthermore, in both species, adaptations for pre-domesticated life may have affected the ability with which the selected lines have accommodated their gait to other morphological changes associated with increasing body mass.

This research study investigates the extent to which evaluation of housing forms may be affected by functional, experiential and emotional factors. The study also investigates the influence of the Western civilization on the Iranian culture through perceived imagery associated with architectural form.A set of twenty photographs representative of architectural styles commonly found in the city of Tehran, Iran as well as a questionnaire survey were the tools used in this perception study.After analyzing the responses , it was concluded that Iranians were in agreement in their perception of Persian, Western, and Ancient architectural styles and preferred the Western architectural style over the other styles. Iranians associated familiarity with newness. Throughout the study it was evident that the Western civilization had a strong influence on the Iranian culture in the perception and preference of architectural forms.
