La thèse a pour objet de caractériser les concepts de division technique et cognitive du travail et vise également à mettre en évidence la montée de la dimension cognitive du travail dans les activités situées au cœur du processus de création de valeur, notamment dans l’industrie manufacturière postfordiste. Elle met l’accent sur les transformations historiques de la division technique du travail, qui ont caractérisé l’évolution du capitalisme industriel et sur la position relativement hégémonique de ses principes dans l’organisation de l’industrie manufacturière durant la période des Trente Glorieuses. Puis, elle insiste sur l’émergence d’un nouveau modèle d’organisation du travail qui a caractérisé le capitalisme contemporain durant la période postfordiste. Ainsi, avec l’avènement du capitalisme cognitif, l’accent est mis sur la montée en puissance des principes de la division cognitive du travail, dans l’organisation de l’industrie manufacturière postfordiste et cela au détriment des principes de la division technique du travail, qui perdent leur position dans l’organisation du travail. Des faits stylisés ont été mobilisé pour justifier cette tendance au développement des principes de la division cognitive du travail, dans l’industrie manufacturière postfordiste
This thesis has for object to characterize the concepts of technical and cognitive division of the work and also aims at highlighting the rise of the cognitive dimension of the work in the activities situated at the heart of the process of value creation, in particular in the postfordiste manufacturing industry. She emphasizes the historic transformations of the technical division of the work, which characterized the evolution of the industrial capitalism on the relatively hegemonic position of its principles in the organization of the manufacturing industry during the period Thirty Glorious. Then, she insists on the emergence of a new model of organization of the work which characterized the contemporary capitalism during period postfordiste. So, with the succession of the cognitive capitalism, the accent is put on the increase in importance of the principles of the cognitive division of the work, in the organization of the manufacturing industry postfordiste and in to the detriment of the principles of the technical division of the work, which lose their position in the organization of the work. Stylized fact was mobilized for justifying this trend to the development of the principles of the cognitive division of the work, in the postfordiste manufacturing industry

Digital maps of geographic areas are increasingly common in many types of workplace, in education and in the public domain. Their interactivity and visual features, and the complexity of geographic(al) information systems (GIS) which create, edit and manipulate them, create special cognitive demands on the end-user which are not present in traditional cartographic maps or in most human-computer interaction (HCI). This thesis reviews cross-disciplinary literature regarding cognitive aspects of viewing and interacting with digital maps. Data from an observational study of GIS use, including real-time recordings of normal workplace activities, was analysed using various approaches to examine the interactive and visual aspects of people's work. The implications for cartographic, psychological and HeI aspects of GIS are discussed, in the context of the actual tasks people perform with them (rather than the computationally advanced analyses assumed by most literature). The second phase of the research examined the spatial knowledge attained and used during this interaction. The relevance of specific concepts in cognitive psychology, and of factors that create individual differences in cognition, are discussed in depth, alongside work in environmental and educational psychology, cartography and geography. A controlled experiment examined the degree to which task characteristics induce a different spatial model or reference frame when viewing a digital map. It was shown that even novice users can switch between considering the map as an abstract geometric display or as a geographical representation, without affecting performance. However, tasks forcing subjects to focus entirely on the geometry rather than the geography did affect performance in a surprise post-test photograph identification task. Map users' mental model or reference frame is apparently affected by these task constraints; this has implications for GIS design and practice as well as for understanding spatial cognition The study also considered the role of expertise and other individual difference factors, although conclusions were limited by sample size. Further research issues are highlighted, particularly regarding the knowledge structures and spatial language used in interpreting digital maps.

Fairness is an important concept that regulates many everyday transactions in human societies. While a large literature on the subject of fairness exists within the social sciences, the subject of fairness has not yet been explicitly addressed by researchers working in the area of computer- supported cooperative work (CSCW). One reason for this is that fairness may not seem especially critical for collaboration and, therefore, appears irrelevant to technological design. Yet perceptions about what is ‘fair’ often influence decisions concerning the assignment of tasks, the investment of effort, and the distribution of rewards during collaborative projects. Additionally, making accurate judgements about fairness can be difficult in computer-mediated settings where awareness of shared efforts is limited. This thesis investigates the relationship between fairness and division of labour in collaborative work. We adopt a mixed methods approach to explore the prevalence of fairness in initial, distributive allocations of workload, as well as how fairness comes into play during the enactment of collaborative tasks. Our first study finds that initial allocations of work are made on the basis of fairness, and that perceptions about fairness in division of labour are linked to overall satisfaction with group outcomes. We then introduce a novel model of workload assignment based on the classic ‘ultimatum game’, and explore our model in a series of empirical studies using collaborative search tasks. Our findings provide further evidence of fairness norms in the allocation of work. We also report an emergent matching effect in participants’ task completion times, which we take as further evidence of fairness in the enactment of collaborative workloads. We then report a qualitative study of collaborative search tool use in everyday tasks. This study draws attention to the importance of context in determining the extent to which people police fairness, and provides numerous implications for the design of collaborative search systems. Our final thesis study explores the potential for supporting fairness during CSCW. We suggest that designers should provide awareness about individual contributions and should allow individuals to assess fairness via social comparisons. We report a study of how groups in the online game World of Warcraft use awareness mechanisms to keep track of individual contributions to the collective effort. Our study implies the potential utility of contribution meters while also shedding light on potential side-effects. The thesis ends by considering the implication of our results for current understandings of fairness. We propose a theoretical model that describes the process by which people assess fairness in the division and completion of collaborative workloads.

This research is based on the well-known but seldom stated premise that the design of complex engineered systems is done by people -- each with their own knowledge, thoughts, and views about the system being designed. To understand the implications of this social dimension, the Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE) environment, a real-world setting for conceptual space mission design, is examined from technical and social perspectives. An integrated analysis demonstrates a relationship among shared knowledge, process, and product. The design process is analyzed using a parameter-based Design Structure Matrix (DSM). This model, consisting of 682 dependencies among 172 parameters, is partitioned (reordered) to reveal a tightly coupled design process. Further analysis shows that making starting assumptions about design budgets leads to a straightforward process of well-defined and sequentially executed design iterations. To analyze the social aspects, a network-based model of shared knowledge is proposed. By quantifying team members' common views of design drivers, a network of shared mental models is built to reveal the structure of shared knowledge at a snapshot in time. A structural comparison of pre-session and post-session networks is used to compute a metric of change in shared knowledge. Based on survey data from 12 design sessions, a correlation is found between change in shared knowledge and each of several system attributes, including technological maturity, development time, mass, and cost. Integrated analysis of design process and shared knowledge yields three interdisciplinary insights.
(cont.) First, certain features of the system serve a central role both in the design process and in the development of shared knowledge. Second, change in shared knowledge is related to the design product. Finally, change in shared knowledge and team coordination (agreement between expected and reported interactions) are positively correlated. The thesis contributes to the literature on product development, human factors engineering, and organizational and social psychology. It proposes a rigorous means of incorporating the socio cognitive aspects of design into the practice of systems engineering. Finally, the thesis offers a set of recommendations for the formation and management of ICE design facilities and discusses the applicability of the proposed methodology to the full-scale development of complex engineered systems.

Companies are always looking for ways to reduce their costs, cost reductions which allow companies to increase their overall profits. There are various cost reductions strategies, such as: change materials and/or design of the products, change suppliers, and offshore engineering. This last strategy, offshore engineering, is a common practice in today's global industries. This thesis applies the cost-reduction strategy of offshore engineering to the automotive industry. Specifically, this thesis presents an analysis of the Seat Subsystem, which assists the corporation in selecting which components of the subsystem are optimal to be offshored. Based on product architecture design structure matrices, this analysis identifies clusters of components within the Seat Subsystem which are highly interrelated. After adding three variables: experience needed to develop each of the components, current experience of the offshore office, and supplier location of these components, a proposal of which components should be offshored is presented. Further, in this thesis a Process/Organization DSM is used to identify when in the seat development process the Seat Engineers have closer relations with other departments within the organization. The results of this Process/Organization DSM will assist the company in creating travel plans for the engineers. After establishing which components of the seat should be offshored, an additional analysis is presented which assists the organization in determining where to offshore these components. This analysis is based on three frameworks: CAGE, ADDING, and Porter's and virtual diamond. A summary of the results of this analysis presents a quantitative evaluation of three offshoring options: China, India, and Mexico. In addition, in this thesis an analysis is presented to determine how the Seat Organization Architecture needs to be adapted in order to support the Offshore Strategy. This organization transformation is based on three methodologies: Enterprise Architecture Sequence Model, 4P's of Strategy, and Seven Strategy Questions. At the end of this thesis, a six-step process is presented to assist other organizations when an offshore strategy is needed to breakdown the development of a product or system and determine where to offshore each of the components.

The structure of the family unit in the United Kingdom has undergone monumental changes in recent decades. The legal definition of a family has evolved substantially to include a wider range of family forms, most recently same-sex marriage, which became legal in the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) in 2014. Legal changes in the family accompany a range of social changes - among the most common of these is an expansion in the number of different-sex non-marital co-residential unions (concisely called "cohabitation") (Ermisch and Francesconi, 2000; Beaujouan and Bhrolcháin, 2011). Since the 1970s, these types of relationships have become widely accepted (Coast, 2009) and increasingly common (Office for National Statistics, 2012a). However, despite its prevalence, cohabitation in the United Kingdom is seldom studied independently of marriage. My dissertation strives to fill this gap in the literature. Specifically, my dissertation adds to the understanding of the household division of labour during cohabitation. Instead of merely examining cohabitation as one homogenous relationship type, Chapter 2 profiles three groups of cohabitants: 1) pre-marital cohabitants; 2) non-marital short-term cohabitants; 3) long-term cohabitants who reside together for five years or longer. Subsequent chapters examine how each of these groups, in turn, addresses the household division of labour - pre-marital and early couple formation cohabitation in Chapter 3, couples transitioning from cohabitation to marriage in Chapter 4, and during long-term cohabitation in Chapter 5. This dissertation is a significant contribution to the field of economic sociology because the household division of labour has not yet been explored during cohabitation in this way.

Despite the widespread use of digital technologies in the workplace, there is littleknown about how social aspects and contextual influences affect the usage. Asdigital technologies get more integrated in work duties it creates new possibilitiesfor how work can be conducted, however, the integration also induce new demandsand expectations. This thesis takes an exploratory approach to study social aspectsand contextual influences, and how these affect the usage of a decision supportsystem. The theoretical framework, cognitive work analysis, was adopted to conduct a workdomain analysis, and a social organization and cooperation analysis. Interviews,observations and an online questionnaire were used with the cognitive workanalysis framework to study the social aspects and contextual influences. The results of this thesis can be boiled down into the following outcomes: a modelof the work domain where the system is used; eight themes that were identified asthe main source of influence on the users’ attitudes and motivations toward thesystem; a social organization and cooperation analysis that tie together thepreviously outlined results, this to provide three scenarios that illustrate socialaspects of work with the system.Keywords: cognitive work analysis, work domain a

The aging population in the United States will increase drastically in the next decades. Consequently, the field of aging will need more social workers. Beyond the usual cognitive decline of this stage in life, older adults may face conditions that include cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. This research studied the extent to which personal experience and previous work exposure influences social work students’ interest in working with the elderly with cognitive impairment. This study used a cross-sectional survey design and collected the participants’ answers using a survey which was sent out through classroom visits and online via email; participants’ answers (n=133) were analyzed using a quantitative method. Results suggested that previous work exposure to an elderly with cognitive impairment has influence on the students’ current interest, while previous experience through interaction with family and friends was not an influence. Findings from this study may help promote the creation of internships or other ways of supporting social work students interested in developing a career in aging, as an increase in the number of future social workers in this field will help fulfill the needs of older adults.

The purpose of this research is to discuss employment in the United States (US) service sector. The main concern is not pinpointing numerical estimates, but instead identifying trends which lead to job growth or job loss. Like manufacturing jobs that have been lost to offshore locations or productivity gains, so too are service jobs at risk. Offshoring - the outsourcing of business functions overseas - and automation have the same effect of displacing workers. What keeps a service job in the US and what makes it ideal to ship overseas or replace with a computer? Consumers have several choices between different product and service offerings. And, different products need varied levels of aftermarket service. What makes customers go out and spend money rather than completing tasks themselves? This thesis attacks these questions by outlining characteristics of products, services, and consumers which could help label jobs as "safe" or "at-risk." First is a discussion of these characteristics. Then, the range of product and service alternatives that consumers have to choose from is presented and applied to examples.
(cont.) Overall, jobs which may be at-risk are those occupations that can be offshored, automated, or easily performed by consumers themselves. On the other hand, jobs that may prove safer are those with high barriers to self-service, those that offer a customized service or experience, and those that require physical contact to be performed.

The effectiveness of an integrated treatment program utilizing group-administered cognitive-behavioral therapies for panic disorder was examined. Treatment was based upon the cognitive model of panic disorder. Subjects meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder received six 1.5 hour sessions of outpatient group therapy over an 8-week period. Subjects were given an extensive rationale of the deve1opment and maintenance of panic disorder, breathing retraining, progressive relaxation training, cognitive therapy to identify and modify maladaptive beliefs and dysfunctional cognitive schemas, as well as training in imagery desensitization. An assessment battery which included measures of panic, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and self-efficacy was given at pre-and post-treatment and at 1-and 2-month follow-up. All subjects were free of spontaneous panic attacks at post-treatment, and 50 percent of subjects showed improvement in the areas of anxiety, depression, and self-efficacy.

Reconfigurable computing architectures are well suited for the dynamic data flow processing requirements of software-defined radio. The software radio concept has quickly evolved to include spectrum sensing, awareness, and cognitive algorithms for machine learning resulting in the cognitive radio model. This work explores the application of reconfigurable hardware to the physical layer of cognitive radios using non-contiguous multi-carrier radio techniques. The practical tasks of spectrum sensing, frame detection, synchronization, channel estimation, and mutual interference mitigation are challenges in the communications and the computing fields that are addressed to optimally utilize the capacity of opportunistically allocated spectrum bands. FPGA implementations of parameterizable OFDM and filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) radio prototypes with spectrum awareness and non-contiguous sub-carrier allocation were completed and tested over-the-air. Sub-carrier sparseness assumptions were validated under practical implementation and performance considerations. A novel algorithm for frame detection and synchronization with mutual interference rejection applicable to the FBMC case was proposed and tested.

Research has shown that self-efficacy is one of the most important personal resources in the work context. However, research on working life has mainly focused on a cognitive and task-oriented dimension of self-efficacy representing employees’ perceptions of their capacity to successfully complete work tasks. Thus, little is known about the influence that believing in one’s social and emotional competence could have. This thesis aims to expand previous theory regarding self-efficacy in the workplace by investigating social, emotional, and cognitive self-efficacy dimensions in relation to leadership, health, and well-being.   The thesis rests on four empirical studies, all related to health and well-being, and including at least one self-efficacy dimension. Study I employed questionnaire data from 169 Swedish high school students. The other three studies were based on questionnaire data obtained during a three-year international health-promoting leadership research project. These participants were employees and leaders from 229 different teams in 12 organizations in Sweden and Germany representing a wide range of occupations. Study I supported the idea that emotional self-efficacy is an important antecedent to prosocial behaviour and also highlighted the value of differentiating between different dimensions of self-efficacy. Study II validated the new work-related Occupational Social and Emotional Self-efficacy Scales; and indicated that these dimensions are positively related to well-being. However, Study III showed that emotional exhaustion in followers crossed over to leaders when the leaders’ emotional self-efficacy was high. Study IV revealed that transformational leadership and social self-efficacy can be positive for team climate. The main theoretical contribution of this thesis is to expand previous theory regarding self-efficacy in the workplace by incorporating social, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. The main practical implication is that the new Occupational Social and Emotional Self-efficacy Scales can be used to promote health and well-being in the workplace through activities such as recruitment, staff development, and team-building. This thesis suggests that (a) training managers to exert transformational leadership behaviours may simultaneously promote team climate, and this process may be mediated by social self-efficacy, (b) it may be counterproductive to enhance leaders’ emotional abilities in a team of exhausted followers, since the result can be an exhausted leader rather than an exhilarated team, (c) interventions aimed at improving health and well-being should be specific to each work setting, and (d) a more holistic approach where the mutual influence between leaders and followers is considered may be beneficial for healthier work environments.

Often building on existing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) policy, efforts have been taken to encourage entrepreneurship by, for example, reducing red-tape and improving access to financing. However, these efforts do not appear to be having the hoped effect of fostering more entrepreneurship. Starting from the maturing field of literature that applies cognitive science to entrepreneurship, this thesis examines what motivates entrepreneurs to start new ventures. I then use this understanding to develop policy options that aim to directly target individuals and foster more entrepreneurship as a unique interdisciplinary contribution to the literature on entrepreneurship policy. This thesis develops a framework for a cognitive approach to policy, which aims to put the entrepreneur at the heart of entrepreneurship policy. The cognitive approach is a tool for policy-makers to enable them to more readily understand entrepreneurs' mindsets and the policy options that can foster entrepreneurial intentions in their constituencies. In applying the cognitive approach to the entrepreneurial environment, this thesis shows that the types of policies necessary for fostering entrepreneurship are different from those currently favored by policy makers. Unlike SME policies, fostering entrepreneurship requires policies that help individuals build self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intentions through personal experiences, networks, feedback and mentorship. In the final chapters, the cognitive framework is applied to the MIT-Portugal Program, demonstrating how to apply this framework pragmatically and highlighting considerations for exporting entrepreneurship curricula from MIT to Portugal.

This thesis is about nursing work and the ways in which nurses in a general hospital accomplished occupational jurisdiction. It is based on ethnographic data generated on a surgical ward and a medical ward in a single NHS trust hospital. The study is set in the context of recent developments in nursing and medical education (DHSS, 1987; GMC, 1993; UKCC, 1987) and health policy (DH, 1989) which have created the impetus for shifts in the division of labour in health care, reviving deep-rooted historical tensions between professional and service versions of nursing. Drawing on the work of Hughes (1984), Abbott (1988) and Strauss and colleagues (Strauss et al, 1963; Strauss et al, 1964; Strauss, 1978) the aim of this project was to move on from the policy debates and develop a less essentialist account of the nursing role through an exploration of the ways in which nurses managed the parameters of their work in the course of their everyday activities. Hughes concept of 'dirty work' is employed as a sensitising device. The work of hospital-based general nurses is explored through the analysis of five key nursing boundaries: nurse-doctor, nurse-support worker, nurse-patient/relative, nurse-nurse, and nurse-management. The professional and sociological literature suggested that as a result of recent policy developments, there would be an increased need for negotiation of nurses' inter-occupational boundaries with medicine and support workers and that this was likely to be subject to some tension. But field observations revealed that nurses accomplished these inter-occupational boundaries with minimal negotiation and little explicit conflict. Conversely, there were policy-related tensions at the three other key nursing boundaries - at nurses' infra-occupational boundary, at the boundary between nurses and patients and their relatives, and at the boundary between ward-based nurses and nursing and general management - which were largely unanticipated.

We study the problem of distributing a single global task between a group ofheterogeneous robots. We view this problem as a fair division game. In this setting,every robot defines a preference function over parts of the task according to its sens-ing and motion capabilities. These preferences are described by density functionsover the task. We want to find an allocation of the global task that maximizes theprobability of task completion. We first formulate the task distribution problem as afair subdivision problem and provide a centralized algorithm to compute the alloca-tions for each robot. We provide a complexity analysis and computational results ofthe algorithm. We also provide a decentralized approach, based on the decentralizedcomputations of non-differentiable linear programs using the subgradient methodand discuss its convergence properties.

Evidence is presented that in the early stages of design or composition the mental processes used by artists for visual invention require a different type of support from those used for visualising a nearly complete object. Most research into machine visualisation has as its goal the production of realistic images which simulate the light pattern presented to the retina by real objects. In contrast sketch attributes preserve the results of cognitive processing which can be used interactively to amplify visual thought. The traditional attributes of sketches include many types of indeterminacy which may reflect the artist's need to be "vague". Drawing on contemporary theories of visual cognition and neuroscience this study discusses in detail the evidence for the following functions which are better served by rough sketches than by the very realistic imagery favoured in machine visualising systems. 1. Sketches are intermediate representational types which facilitate the mental translation between descriptive and depictive modes of representing visual thought. 2. Sketch attributes exploit automatic processes of perceptual retrieval and object recognition to improve the availability of tacit knowledge for visual invention. 3. Sketches are percept-image hybrids. The incomplete physical attributes of sketches elicit and stabilise a stream of super-imposed mental images which amplify inventive thought. 4. By segregating and isolating meaningful components of visual experience, sketches may assist the user to attend selectively to a limited part of a visual task, freeing otherwise over-loaded cognitive resources for visual thought. 5. Sequences of sketches and sketching acts support the short term episodic memory for cognitive actions. This assists creativity, providing voluntary control over highly practised mental processes which can otherwise become stereotyped. An attempt is made to unite the five hypothetical functions. Drawing on the Baddeley and Hitch model of working memory, it is speculated that the five functions may be related to a limited capacity monitoring mechanism which makes tacit visual knowledge explicitly available for conscious control and manipulation. It is suggested that the resources available to the human brain for imagining nonexistent objects are a cultural adaptation of visual mechanisms which evolved in early hominids for responding to confusing or incomplete stimuli from immediately present objects and events. Sketches are cultural inventions which artificially mimic aspects of such stimuli in order to capture these shared resources for the different purpose of imagining objects which do not yet exist. Finally the implications of the theory for the design of improved machine systems is discussed. The untidy attributes of traditional sketches are revealed to include cultural inventions which serve subtle cognitive functions. However traditional media have many short-comings which it should be possible to correct with new technology. Existing machine systems for sketching tend to imitate nonselectively the media bound properties of sketches without regard to the functions they serve. This may prove to be a mistake. It is concluded that new system designs are needed in which meaningfully structured data and specialised imagery amplify without interference or replacement the impressive but limited creative resources of the visual brain.

'Complex sociotechnical systems' are systems made up of numerous interacting parts, both human and non-human, operating in dynamic, ambiguous and safety critical domains. The system design, and representation, has significant implications for the usability of the system, its performance, errors and reliability. Due to its formative constraint-based approach, Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) has been frequently proposed as a framework for modelling these complex systems, further it is contended that the approach can be extended to design for interaction without significant deviation from the accepted framework. This thesis presents a number of applications in complex military domains to explore and develop the benefits of CWA. Unlike much of the previous literature, particular attention is placed on exploring the CWA framework in its entirety. This holistic approach focuses on the system environment, the activity that takes place within it, the strategies used to conduct this activity, the way in which the constituent parts of the system (both human and non-human) interact and the behaviour required. Each stage of this analysis identifies the constraints governing the system; it is contended that through this holistic understanding of constraints, recommendations can be made for the design of system interaction; increasing the ability of users to cope with unanticipated, unexpected situations. This thesis discusses the applicability of the approach in system analysis, development and evaluation. It provides process to what was previously a loosely defined framework.

The design and development of a gas turbine engine for aircraft applications is a highly integrated process, and requires the integration of efforts of large numbers of individuals from many design specialties. If the design process is well defined and the product architecture is stable, the outcome of the process will become highly predictable and repeatable. In the case that there are significant architecture changes due to technology insertion, customer requirements or overall changes in component configuration for performance, this large and integrated design process may become more challenging. Communication of design intent, requirements and predicted performance for all of the components, systems and subsystems must be made without error to all involved in the development of the product. Pratt & Whitney is a large gas turbine engine design company, and has been in the engine business since it's inception in 1925. In 2008, P&W designed, built and flew a large "Geared Turbofan" engine which was a demonstrator for a new product architecture being developed, the first of the new product family being the PWl 524G. This new engine architecture is different from the more traditional turbofan engine architecture in the use of a reduction gear set between the fan and the turbine shaft which drives it. Earlier work in examination of gas turbine engine product-design process interactions has been performed with a traditional high bypass ratio gas turbine engine architecture using the PW4098. Using two test cases, the PW4098 and PW1524G, this work seeks to map the architecture of a gas turbine aero engine in the Design Structure Matrix format, with all major connectivity shown, and then to apply organizational information in the form of Domain Matrix Maps to the physical architectural connectivity to determine which portions of the architecture result in additional or functional group interactions. The determination of the architecture driven changes in the number of functional group interactions is made first, and then isolation of "novel" functional group interactions is made with the original architecture serving as the baseline for organizational interaction. Analysis of these results is then performed to examine the potential organizational impact of moving from traditional turbofan architecture to a geared turbofan architecture. The potential impact to the organization in assessed and recommendations are made to minimize the potential impact of the change. The analysis presented shows that the change in engine architecture represents a move to a more distributed and less modular architecture. The DSM shows a 20% increase in density of connectivity between components. From an organizational impact perspective, there is a 30% change overall in the total number of functional group interactions in the integration of the engine. The impact of these changes on particular design functional groups is discussed, and the data suggests that the more distributed architecture of the PW1524G likely will require more system integration effort than the traditional turbofan architecture of the PW4098.

US Air Force fighter aircraft underwent a remarkable transformation in the period from 1950 to 1980. Whereas the lone fighter pilots of earlier fame relied on the power of their eyesight, the finesse of their piloting skills, and a steady squeeze of the trigger to achieve victory, later pilots vanquished their foe by focusing on a four-inch-square cockpit display, manipulating electromagnetic waves, and launching rocket-propelled missiles from miles away. Two popular historical narratives dominate this period in fighter aviation: one of "great machines," which focuses on the technologies; the other of "great pilots," which focuses on the oft-heroic aviators. The former conjures notions of technological determinism; the latter, a timeless "myth of the fighter pilot." Regrettably, the two distinct approaches obscure the important human-machine interactions that linked the pilots with their fire control technologies. This study presents an alternative perspective of fighter aviation, viewing it instead as an inseparable system of humans and machines working together. I develop a cognitive history of the air-to-air fighter pilot, analyzing three sequential experiences: the F-86E Sabre during the Korean War, the F-4C Phantom II during the Vietnam War, and the F-15A Eagle during a pair of air combat evaluations conducted in 1977. In each case, new fire control systems were introduced to simplify weapons employment and thereby free the pilot to focus attention on other tasks deemed more vital, such as flying itself. The pilots, however, soon realized that within air combat, their traditional flying skills were becoming less critical to their success and survival; in contrast, the skills required to operate their new fire control systems were growing in significance and complexity. With the pilots uniquely vested in sustaining the "fighter pilot myth," tension and conflict ensued, both within individual fighter cockpits and in the social relationships that extended between fighter cockpits. This study offers fresh insight into issues of technological change that confront today's military aviators, especially regarding remotely piloted aircraft. More generally, this study addresses the tensions that often arise when increasing automation alters or displaces the tasks that have historically defined an individual's profession.

This content analysis of existing literature explored the published research supporting cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder and assessed if the research documented a sufficient number of Latinos in the samples of participants to be generalized for success in this population. The instruments used to measure panic disorder were assessed for cultural and linguistic validity for Latinos. The findings indicated that the research supporting CBT for panic disorder included insufficient Latino participants in the samples. Therefore, the success of CBT for Latinos with panic disorder is uncertain. Furthermore, there is paucity of culturally validated instruments that measure panic disorder. Panic disorder has been associated with many cultural expressions and syndromes that need to be adequately assessed when measuring panic disorder symptomatology.

The purpose ofthis study was to examine the effects of age of initial sexual orientation and family composition on cognitive distortions among adolescent Caucasian and African American male sexual offenders. This study was based on the assumption that the age of initial sexual orientation and single parent households effect the amount of cognitive distortions present in Caucasian and African American males who have been identified as sexual offenders. Parenting make-up (single parents or married couples) and age of orientation to sexuality were considered the two independent variables in this study. The dependent variable was identified as cognitive distortion. A case study analysis approach was used to analyze data that were obtained from completed Adolescent Cognition Scales and Psychosexual Assessments provided by a clinical social work expert in the field of adolescent sexual offenders. The conclusion drawn from the findingsindicated that there was a weak positive relationship between age of initial sexual orientation and cognitive distortions. The findings further revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between family composition and cognitive distortions and that African American adolescent sexual offenders had a slightly higher degree of cognitive distortions than Caucasian adolescent sexual offenders.

Systems engineering exists as a discipline to enable organizations to control and manage the development of complex hardware and software. These methods are particularly essential in the development of space systems, which feature extremely challenging demands for engineering performance, coupled with extremely limited resources for accomplishing them. Success requires careful attention to the relationships between various components as well as the organizations constructing them. Unfortunately, aerospace organizations routinely struggle with the traditional systems engineering process, and as a result, program managers experience pressure to conclude, curtail or ignore critical elements. The consequence is that cost overruns, slipped schedules and outright failures are a regular feature of the industry. Recent advances in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methods provide an opportunity to rectify these issues by better integrating systems engineering capabilities into the engineering development process. By directly networking the engineering models used in the development process to each other and the systems diagrams which describe them, MBSE has the potential to make the development process more responsive to design evolutions and account for changes across the entire space system. In this way, systems engineering could become a more integrated part of the development process and better contribute to successful space systems. Unfortunately, current-generation MBSE tools and methods have yet to fully realize this potential. Critical capability gaps have deterred adoption and relegated their use to academic endeavors. This thesis argues that many of the difficulties encountered in current systems engineering practice - as well as attempts to reform that practice - can be explained with reference to distributed cognition, control theory and the wider field of cognitive systems engineering. Existing tools and techniques, while nominally fulfilling the purposes assigned to them, generally fail to adequately support systems engineers in the cognitive tasks associated with the control and management of development processes. As a result, systems engineers are frequently overburdened in their roles and are unable to fully address the myriad of concerns relevant to the design of good system solutions. A cognitive analysis of the software and hardware devices situated in practical instantiations of development activities can reveal opportunities to improve performance and enhance effectiveness. Such changes would make systems engineering tools easier to use and better tailored to the needs of the system engineering task, encouraging adoption and accomplishing the goals of the MBSE community. A cognitively-informed MBSE approach, in addition to better linking the elements of the engineering effort, can also be used to link the engineering effort to the higher-level needs which drive the engineering process in the first place. One of the biggest challenges any engineering organization faces is managing the "how," "why," and "what" of system development, that is, the engineering logic which determines "how" a given program or system will be built and the business, political or policy logic which determines "why" and "what" system will come into being. Often, these latter concerns are poorly addressed by the space system development process, which can lead to sub-optimal outcomes for the wider organizations involved in the engineering project. Methods which better systematize, quantify and direct the process of stakeholder analysis, concept generation and architecture exploration can aid in the selection of system architectures that better meet the strategic objectives of the organizations which develop and operate space systems. Such methods are demonstrated with respect to an evaluation of possible architectures for a notional large, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) optical space telescope to succeed Hubble in the late 2020s to early 2030s timeframe. This research draws on MBSE concepts and the legacy of tradespace modeling for system design to extend tradespace modeling to the realm of architectural exploration. Its particular interest is the quantitative treatment of "programmatic factors": the business, policy and political considerations which govern high-level decision-making. Through modeling, these considerations can be directly associated with engineering performance factors, enabling better selection decisions and reinforcing linkages and understanding between the engineering and management levels within an organization. This thesis aims to evaluate the Turkish Labour Law on the basis of a new approach to legal studies that follow the internal tendency of legal science to resolve its own problem, which is that of convincingly defining the point of contact between norm and fact (form and content), materially connecting the juridical organisation of power with the social structuring of power, while avoiding both formalist and positivist deviations. Against this background, the thesis aims to assess the correlation between the recent changes in the international division of labour and the structural forms, on the axis of which the Turkish legal system functions. This endeavour includes an attempt to view law in its location as a component to a general and persistent process of social regulation that secures general patterns of social domination. This study argues that the role of the collective labour law over the stabilisation of wage relations is increasingly deteriorated by the changing nature of the state and of work, including the new institutionality and the increasing influence of business over labour politics. of the importance of the universal principle of the freedom of contract in labour law, the regulatory powers of individual labour law have extended to the realm of capital-labour relations having an impact over the social division of labour and have acquired a relative dominance.

In this research, I used a mixed-methods approach employing both autobiographical reasoning and psychometric instruments through a survey design to explore how the four cognitive mechanisms of Work Identity Theory (WIT) were developed in 754 college-educated participants’ lives. WIT is a vocational identity theory, which posits that, four cognitive mechanism: Effort, Reflection, Appraisal and Fusion are used by individuals to define their vocational identities. By vocational identity, I am referring to the sum total of a person’s self-thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and actions that are informed by work experience. By cognitive mechanisms, I am referring to the mental processes used to develop a vocational identity. Multiple theories have emerged over the past one hundred years to explain the concept of a vocational identity. This study seeks to make two new contributions to the set of existing theories. First, the definition I propose of vocational identity does not have an implied, positive valence for having a well-developed vocational identity, but it encompass the many ways people define themselves in relation to their work. In contrast, the most frequently cited vocational identity theories are stage theories in which the highest stage is regarded as optimal. I posit this difference is important because it permits individuals to have different attitudes toward work and themselves without being stigmatized by the theory. Second, the focus of this research is to identify how the cognitive mechanisms come to exist through the study of participants’ self-identified most important developmental experiences in relation to each WIT cognitive mechanism. In addition to experiences, I also study the participants’ Need for Cognition (NFC), the propensity to engage in and enjoy thinking. This study has two key finding. First, people who think more deeply about their own lives, experience more development, at least in the cognitive mechanisms of WIT. Second, our life experiences do not matter as much as the depth of thought we give to them and subsequently what we take from them concerning the development of WIT’s cognitive mechanisms.

A single system research design was used. It was found that a 12 week session of cognitive behavioral coping skills reduced the alcohol consumption of the client.

This was a study of avoidant behavior and intrusive thoughts that occurred in a rape victim diagnosed with PTSD. Cognitive restructuring as a behavioral intervention was used to decrease the frequency of avoidant behaviors and intrusive thoughts displayed by the subject. Test results depict a significant decline in the frequency of avoidant behaviors and intrusive thoughts. Limitations to this study include an inability to provide strong evidence as to whether or not the intervention caused the observed changes, lack of control for any alternative explanations, and time restraint. This study was not conclusive. Further study is warranted to fully understand the relationship between cognitive intervention and the avoidant behaviors and intrusive thoughts that occur within the diagnosis of PTSD.

Little research has been conducted examining the use of dream interpretation in brief psychotherapy. This study examined the efficacy of transpersonal dream interpretation methods taught in a brief workshop. A mixed-method, control-group design was used. Participants included male and female Americans of European, Hispanic and Asian descent. The mean age of participants was 39.5 with most having some college education. Quantitative data was collected using the Outcome Measures 30 (OQ30), the State of Hope Scale (SHS), and the Gains from Dream Session Questionnaire (GDSQ). Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interview questions and thematic analysis of participant dream journals. Repeated measures ANOVAs conducted on the OQ30 failed to demonstrate significant improvements within the dream work group compared to the control group. A paired sample t test failed to demonstrate measurable improvement within the dream work group compared to the control group. Participants noted some improvement in their responses to the GDSQ. The qualitative data collected indicated, based on subjective participant commentaries, that the dream work was considered useful by most of the workshop participants. Implications for further research are discussed.

At the present time, most systems engineers do not have access to cognitive work analysis information or training in terms they can understand. This may lead to a disregard of the cognitive aspect of system design. The impact of this issue is system requirements that do not account for the cognitive strengths and limitations of users. Systems engineers cannot design effective decision support systems without defining cognitive work requirements. In order to improve system requirements, integration of cognitive work requirements into the systems engineering process has to be improved. One option to address this gap is the development of a Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) framework using Systems Modeling Language (SysML). The study had two phases. The first involved aligning the CWA terminology with the SysML to produce a CWA framework using SysML. The second was the creation of an instruction using SysML to inform systems engineers of the process of integrating cognitive work requirements into the systems engineering process. This methodology provides a structured framework to define, manage, organize, and model cognitive work requirements. Additionally, it provides a tool for systems engineers to use in system design which supports a user's cognitive functions, such as situational awareness, problem solving, and decision making.

The Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) framework is widely used by researchers for the analysis of complex systems. It, however, lacks the same impact amongst industrial practitioners. This thesis investigates possible adaptations of the framework to project and industrial constraints, and the consequences associated with such adaptations. Long haul heavy vehicle transportation is the application domain for the work presented in the thesis. The CWA framework has been applied within the Methods for Designing Future Autonomous Systems (MODAS) project. Adaptations have been made to fit the framework within the project constraints and the industrial contexts. Interviews with stakeholders in an industrial organization regarding possible use of models from the CWA framework have been made. The CWA was scaled to available resources when applied within the MODAS project. From this we realized that prioritization of work activity can have consequences on the resulting systems ability to handle unforeseen events. Further, a focus on the current system probed a rapid out-dating of the analysis due to technical development. The conclusion is that even if advantages are lost during adaptation due to practical constraints, the CWA framework could add value to practitioners within industry if adapted to the industrial context.

Psychosocial working conditions play a significant role for health during working age, as well as in post-retirement life. However, little is known about the impact of work stressors on cognitive and physical impairment assessed in combination. The aim was to study associations between midlife work stressors and physical and cognitive impairment in older age for women and men separately. The data were derived from two Swedish nationally representative surveys. The same participants were followed through three waves at the mean ages of 54, 61, and 81 (n=360). Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the association between work stressors, and test of cognitive and physical function. Low control and passive jobs were associated with higher odds of cognitive impairment, and cognitive and physical impairment when assessed in combination. These findings were driven by associations found among men. Accumulated low control and passive jobs across midlife were associated with physical impairment in older age among men, but not among women. These results highlight the importance of work stressors for physical and cognitive impairment in older age. Improving psychosocial working conditions in midlife, in particular increasing the level of control among employees, may promote healthy aging.
