This thesis deals with environmental scene analysis, the auditory result of mixing separate but concurrent emitting sources. The sound environment is a complex object, which opens the field of possible research beyond the specific areas that are speech or music. For a person to make sense of its sonic environment, the involved process relies on both the perceived data and its context. For each experiment, one must be, as much as possible,in control of the evaluated stimuli, whether the field of investigation is perception or machine learning. Nevertheless, the sound environment needs to be studied in an ecological framework, using real recordings of sounds as stimuli rather than synthetic pure tones. We therefore propose a model of sound scenes allowing us to simulate complex sound environments from isolated sound recordings. The high level structural properties of the simulated scenes -- such as the type of sources, their sound levels or the event density -- are set by the experimenter. Based on knowledge of the human auditory system, the model abstracts the sound environment as a composite object, a sum of soundsources. The usefulness of the proposed model is assessed on two areas of investigation. The first is related to the soundscape perception issue, where the model is used to propose an innovative experimental protocol to study pleasantness perception of urban soundscape. The second tackles the major issue of evaluation in machine listening, for which we consider simulated data in order to powerfully assess the generalization capacities of automatic sound event detection systems

In agreement with the cognitive anthropology of the directions, which tries to apprehend the springs of the singular and the social one, this ethnographic work falls under a reflexion on the unit of the cultures and more precisely questions the cultural phenomenon through an anthropology of the co-operation concerned with a singular sensory experiment, the olfactive experiment. With this intention, we made laboratories of sensory evaluation and their experiments our ground of study. Within the framework of an approach materialist, naturalist and pragmatic, we observe an action being done thus that the cognitive event ‘odor’ from the point of view of the co-construction of which it is the object. This framework tightened around shared action to smell an odor enables us to approach close to the “olfactive cultures”. Consequently, according to the principles of an anthropology of perception close to the activities, we could work on the perceptive attentions which engage this research on the traces of a cooperation closely lived and incarnated. Thus the cooperation which interested us is given to read during the experiments, during the meetings of group known as ‘of panel’, through the situations met and of the distribution of cognitive devices contributing to the evaluation of olfactive perception. This framework enabled us to question the cooperation in a more general way by raising the question of a possible shared cognition including a new percept: the cooperative percept

Introduction: Sensory, emotional and social cognition represent the processing of internal and external information required by the subject to adapt to the environment. A psycho-trauma is defined as an event that threatens the physical and psychological integrity of an individual, and acts as a sudden and intense intrusion of the cognitive system exposed to danger. This psycho-traumatic intrusion leads to sensory, emotional and social cognitive damage, caused by alterations in the neuromodulation system of the brain structures affected. These cognitive sequelae give rise to the post-traumatic symptoms that constitute post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including perceptual disorders. PTSD is also associated with other comorbid psychiatric disorders, including psychotic disorders. Our work proposes the hypothesis of a "cascade" clinical understanding of psycho-trauma. It supports the idea that sensory, emotional and social cognition articulate with each other and with the environment, and participate in the evolution of the continuum between psycho-trauma and psychotic disorder. Methods: The aim of our research is to study the role of sensory, emotional and social cognition in post-traumatic perceptual disorders. This work is illustrated by two prospective, longitudinal 6-month clinical research studies. PROJECT 1: Identification of markers of emotional and social cognition associated with acoustic-verbal hallucinations (AVH) in the general pediatric population, then in the clinical pediatric population with PTSD. PROJECT 2: Impact of persistent post-Covid-19 olfactory disorders on quality of life, hedonic experience and anxiety and depression dimensions in an adult population. Results: PROJECT 1: The study, carried out in a general pediatric population, included 40 patients (30 girls, 10 boys) with a mean age of 12.8 years. Negative emotions (sadness, fear, anger) were significantly found in the group with persistent AVH at 6 months. Persistent AVH were significantly associated with the diagnosis of PTSD (p=0.01). The study conducted in a clinical pediatric population with PTSD included 31 patients (25 girls, 6 boys) with a mean age of 12.9 years. Negative emotions (patient guilt and maliciousness of HAV) were significantly associated and correlated with persistence of HAV. Negative emotions (disgust, fear and anger, and diagnoses of depression and anxiety) were also associated with PTSD persistence at 6 months. The persistence of HAV was significantly associated with the emergence of a diagnosis of psychotic disorder at 6 months (p=0.01). PROJECT 2: The study included 56 patients with a mean age of 39 (33 women, 23 men). Olfactory disorders were significantly associated and correlated with negative emotions (quality of life, loss of pleasure). Patients with sensory distortion (parosmia, phantosmia) were more significantly impacted emotionally than patients with no sensory perception (anosmia). Although they "objectively" recovered their sense of smell on the psychophysical test, patients who "subjectively" perceived the persistence of an olfactory disorder responded to PTSD symptoms and were more emotionally impacted (quality of life, loss of pleasure, anxiety and depression). Conclusion: Sensory and emotional cognitions are significantly linked after a traumatic event. Their articulation contributes to the onset and maintenance of perceptual disorders. They are also involved in the development of post-traumatic clinical symptoms, PTSD and other associated psychiatric disorders, including psychotic disorders. The evolution of post-traumatic symptoms requires a dimensional reading for a better clinical understanding, preventive monitoring of risk factors for poor psychiatric evolution, and a therapeutic proposal targeting sensory and emotional cognition

Presbycusis is a disease that occurs in more than 12 million French people, but which is still not well known. If it is not treated early, it can lead to serious complications such as communication disorders, depression and cognitive impairment. The current situation is that very few presbycusic patients are treated, and when they are, the result seems insufficient. The purpose of this thesis is to propose using current data, solutions tailored to the needs of these patients, from screening to rehabilitation. Three studies were conducted: the "AcoumAudio" Study, available in three components showed that the vocal acoumetry was a good hearing test to screen elderly people, to evaluate the degree of hearing disorders and to measure functional auditory gain after rehabilitation; Study 1 entitled "Auditory deprivation and cognitive functioning in the elderly" showed that wearing hearing aids could preserve from cognitive deterioration; and Study 2 entitled "Feasibility of a Conjoint Rehabilitation involving audiology and speech therapy for presbycusis (FRéCAOP)" showed that it was possible to offer a more complete and efficient management of presbycusis, in the hearing circuit of GRAPsanté, necessarily including a caregiver

Quality of sensory vision, eye movements and cognition have been broached one by one so far. However, recent studies suggest possible interactions between these fields without clarifying the link. On the one hand, vergence/accommodative (V/A) dysfunctions leads to visual symptoms like sore eyes, blurry or double vision but also problems of attention, concentration, and appear to have a negative impact on academic performances. On the other hand, people diagnosed with vergence disorders also show poor coordination of their saccades, which are essential in reading and cognitive demanding activities. The goal of this thesis is to go into this analysis in depth and to propose experimental ways to evidence the links between V/A disorders, control of the saccades and their influence on cognition. In a first part, we studied the impact of typical V/A disorders and the impact of an induced A/V conflict on the performances during the Stroop test, which is a neurological test known for evaluating cognitive executive functions like inhibition, demanding a high attentional deployment and stimulating basic reading skills. Results show that vergence dysfunctions and V/A inducted conflict have a negative influence on the Stroop performances in students, leading to a diminished control of cognitive functions. These results suggest a more parallel interaction between visual and attentional processes instead of a serial model where vision would be a prerequisite to cognition, slowing down the cognitive processes when disturbed. Secondly, we pursue this theory: vergence rehabilitation in subjects diagnosed with vergence disorders permitted an increase of the vergence capacities, showed an improvement on the coordination of the reading saccades and had a positive influence on the cognitive aspect during reading. This work gives new research possibilities at different level: (1) at a theoretical level, it permits to cross fields like neurology, cognitive psychology, eye movements and optometry; (2) at a clinical level, it suggests typical tests for a more efficient screening and opens new perspectives on solutions to rehabilitate people with V/A disorders; (3) at an educational level, it gives clues on how visual functions could affect academic performances

Paraplegic people are particularly subjects to pressure sores because of their motor, but mainly sensory, disabilitie that prevent perception of sensory alerts. We used the concept of perceptual supplementation, that consists in supplying a deficient sense by informations conveyed by another modality, to develop a device that provides to paraplegic peoples a perception of potentially dangerous overpressures. This device is composed of a pressure map fixed on the wheelchair and a stimulator that is activated in case of danger. Three studies have shown the efficiency of the device on valid and paraplegic people. Ergonomy studies have led to deep modifications of the device, that have been tested again

Focused attention represents a high-level cognitive function enabling humans to selectively facilitate specific actions and perceptions. In a world full of choices of action, and of perceptual possibilities, focused attention appears to be a vital component of human cognition. One observation however, is worth making: human-beings are unable to maintain stable states of focused attention indefinitely. This inability manifests during sustained attention tasks with the progressive occurrence of sensory-motor deficiencies with time-on-task. The phenomenon - called attention decrement - is characterized by increases in motor impulsivity and in response times to imperative events, and by a reduction in perceptual sensitivity. So far, the neural underpinnings of attention decrement have not been fully elucidated and this lack of knowledge is clearly palpable within two disciplinary fields : Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Engineering. In Cognitive Neuroscience, the associated question is why are human-beings unable to maintain an optimal sensory-motor performance during sustained attention tasks? In Cognitive Engineering, the lack of a complete scientific understanding of attentional issues impacts the development of efficient passive Brain-Computer interfaces (BCI), capable of detecting the occurrence of potentially dangerous attention decrements during the performance of everyday activities. Both issues have been addressed in this thesis. In terms of Cognitive Neuroscience, I demonstrate that sustaining focused attention on a visual stimulation rapidly leads to an inhibition of the visual cortices. This sensory inhibition can be causally related to the lack of changes in perceptual stimulation typically characterizing sustained attention tasks. While the mechanism may be beneficial during visual search tasks as it helps humans avoid processing the same stimulus, the same object, the same location several times, it can lead to the occurrence of sensory deficiencies when sustained attention is required. As such, the sensory inhibition provides a compelling explanation as to the decrease in perceptual sensitivity and to the increase in reaction time that typify attention decrement. I show in a second study that attention decrement is associated with an increase in the activity of motor- and attention-related neural structures (i.e., cortico-spinal tract, primary motor, prefrontal and right parietal cortices). This excessive engagement reflects a compensatory process occurring in response to the sensory disengagement already highlighted and to the related degradation of the quality of perceptual representations. It is notable that the excessive engagement of the motor neural structures with time-on-task provides a potential explanation for the increase in motor impulsivity typifying attention decrement. In terms of application of these new findings, I investigated the potential of exploiting these neural correlates of attention decrement to discriminate between two different attentional states (i.e., with or without attention decrement) through a passive BCI system. To do so, we applied supervised classification analyses on near-infrared spectroscopy signals reflecting the hemodynamic activity of prefrontal and parietal cortices as recorded during a sustained attention task. We achieved relatively promising classification performance results which bode well for the future development of passive BCI. When considered together, the results described in this thesis contribute towards a better understanding of the neural correlates of attention decrement and demonstrate how this novel knowledge can be exploited for the future development of systems which may enable a reduction in accidents and human error-driven incidents in real world environments

The topic of this thesis was the rehabilitation of movement of paralyzed limbs through functional electrical stimulation (FES). The objective of the project was to explore the possibility of using information from sensory nerve fibers of muscle receptors as feedback of the closed-loop control of FES systems using intrafascicular peripheral nerve electrodes. Acute animal experiments were performed to record afferent muscle spindle responses to passive stretch. The recordings were performed using the new thin-film Longitudinal Intra-Fascicular Electrode (tfLIFE), developed by Dr. Ken Yoshida at Aalborg University in Denmark. A first-order model of muscle spindle response to passive muscle stretch was proposed that manages to capture the non-linear properties of the afferent neural activity. Moreover, estimation of muscle state from the recorded multi-channel ENG provided more robust results compared to using single-channel recordings. For the abovementioned model to be usable in a estimator of muscle state, the rate of change of muscle length during movement must have negligible effect on model parameters. A neural spike detection and classification scheme was developed for the purpose of isolating sensory neural activity of muscle receptors having minimal sensitivity to the velocity of muscle motion. The algorithm was based on the multi-scale continuous wavelet transform using complex wavelets. The detection scheme outperformes the commonly used simple threshold detection, especially with recordings having low SNR. Results of classification of units indicate that the developed classifier is able to isolate activity having linear relationship with muscle length, which is a step towards on-line model-based estimation of muscle length that can be used in a closed-loop FES system with natural sensory feedback. One of the main issues limiting the interpretation of ENG data is the low level of the neural signal compared to the level of noise in the recordings. Our hypothesis was that shielding the implant site would help improve signal-to-noise level. Experimental results from a preliminary study we had performed indicate that placing a standard cuff electrode around the tfLIFE active sites increases the level of ENG signal in the recordings

This thesis is based on image practices dealing with the sensation of movement. Images and films are designed with drawings, objects and natural environments that change over time, like through biological mutations (plants), shift of scenery (lights), or manual constructions (buildings). Their processes of transformation open the way on the relationship between the body and the animation device. Cinema and visual arts are thus the main fields canvassed to investigate thecognitive and sensory experiences of motion. They concern the connection to affective places, shaped by the embodied experience of space, but also by technology. By focusing on the creative processes of animation films, visual arts productions and their devices, we examine our relationship with creation tools in everyday environments. The work of animation is approached as filmmaking and artistic creation, but it also reveals a particular relationship to the real, to the body set in motion. Based on the films of Jan Švankmajer, Lesley Adams, Blu, William Kentridge, Pierre Hébert or Virgil Widrich, this research explores the ambiguous connection to objects, to the memory as sensitive material, and the uncertain distance between the animate and inanimate. By shifting the organization and functions of elements, bymanipulating their images and objects, some animation practices reflect a disturbance of the sense, giving rise to imaginative projections and to a poetic potential. To examin the body as an interface of the resonance of animated images, the experience of motion is also approached throughout performative arts such as dance and theater. This research questions the limits of the body, the issue of fragmentation and partition, both in our cognitive arrangements and in manufacturing systems of animation

Althought the development of invasive (implants or non-invasive (sensory substitution system) visual prostheses started 40 years ago, the use of such devices in the visually-impaired community is still anecdotal. Technological means are not likely to account for this situation. Since the former approaches, the means to interface a video-camera with the brain are more and more sophisticated and diversified. The question about how transmit the signal is thus well documented. However, the question about what signal should be transmitted is rarely addressed. In this thesis, we will identify tools to push the conception of visual prosthesis beyond the scope of mere interfacing. Active theories of vision are our guideline to do so. Moreover, our work is inspired by natural visual systems : from a model of the human' early visual system established in our laboratory, we have derived a simulation software and implemented it in a recent visuo-auditory sensory substitution system named The VIBE. Our approach is validated with human subjects wearing the device under different tasks requiring localization and/or mobility. Observation of the subject's behavior when using the device demonstrates the interest of signal processing in a visual prosthesis, and give new trails concerning its role in the visual process, be it artificial or natural

Audiovisual interactions taking place during the perception of audiovisual events were explored in two mainly auditory phenomena: speech perception and representation in auditory sensory memory (ASM), by means of behavioural and electrophysiological measures. Concerning speech perception, we have shown that seeing lip mouvements can speed up auditory speech processing in a phonological discrimination task in normal hearing conditions. This behavioral facilitation was associated with both an activation of the (mainly secondary) auditory cortices by lip movements, as shown in intracranial ERPs in epileptic patients, and a decrease of auditory activity within 50-200 ms after sound onset, as shown both in intracranial ERPs in patients and surface ERPs in normal subjects. We have also shown that a behavioural facilitation can be observed even if the visual speech cues carry temporal, but no phonetic, information, but only in noisy environments. Concerning ASM, we have shown that the detection of a rare audiovisual event delivered in a sequence of standard events is faster than that of either visual or auditory events. This facilitation was associated with interactions of the auditory and visual detection processes, based on the existence of auditory and visual sensory memory traces, as indexed by auditory and visual MMNs of the scalp ERPs. We also showed that the representation of an audiovisual event in ASM, as indexed by the auditory MMN, differs from that of its purely auditory component, but only if the unimodal components of this event are regularly associated. However, we failed to show that a representation of such a regularity can trigger an MMN to its violation

The main objective of this thesis was to test the possibility to improve cognitive functioning (working memory, episodic memory, speed of processing, executive functions) and psychological health (self-esteem, memory complaint, satisfaction of life) with leisure activities during aging. The present work was based on four programs using leisure activities, from unimodal to multimodal composition including pretests and posttests and compared to control groups. Globally, results show that the programs heterogeneously improve cognitive performances and provide evidence of benefits transfer to psychological health, except for the unimodal program. Overall, results show that unimodal cognitive training only improve cognitive functioning (Experience 1), whereas playful and multimodal interventions improve psychological health and influence cognitive performance (Experiences 2, 3, et 4). Eventually, our results show that leisure activities during lifespan are associated with a better psychological health (Experiment 3), improve subjective well-being and help to better adapt to ageing. This work supports the idea that leisure activities during life span are in line with psychological health. It also highlights that multimodal cognitive interventions contribute to successful ageing more than unimodal programs

In our daily lives, we are surrounded by audiovisual associations: we perceive and memorize them throughout our lives. However, the mechanisms involved in their learning are not fully understood. In particular, factors such as motor skills that promote such learning are rarely studied from a memory point of view. Thus, the general objectives of this thesis are to: i) study the cognitive mechanisms underlying the learning of audio-visual associations, ii) better understand the impact of motor skills on the effectiveness of its mechanisms, and iii) propose original methodologies likely to increase the effectiveness of these mechanisms and/or compensate for possible deficits.More precisely, this thesis work focuses on the benefit of motor exploration in learning grapho-phonemic correspondences (GPC). In addition to the purely theoretical interest in studying this learning, the importance of this acquisition for young pre-readers adds a practical and pedagogical dimension to this work. What stands out from this thesis is that two areas of study, the one of learning to read and the one of memory are combined. Though both of them deal with learning hence memory, there has never been a real attempt to apply memory models to help understand the mechanisms of learning word reading and writing, and conversely, memory research has rarely looked to research on learning to read and write to validate their assumptions. However, one of the interests of the Act-In model used to support this thesis is precisely to propose an integrated approach to cognitive functioning and not only to memory

Research in biomedical engineering for human disability is becoming a national public health priority. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), dealing with the functional restoration of a person affected by physical disability, is particularly concerned with this medical/societal issue. Among the disciplines coordinated by PMR, physiotherapy is one of the most important, contributing to the diagnosis and therapy of postural control. Within this context, the present work aimed at the development and validation of innovative biomedical systems to improve bipedal postural control in patients suffering an alteration of the sensorimotor system. As the implementation of these medical solutions requires to determine an objective, reliable, valid and useful postural evaluation, and to deepen our understanding of the fundamental processes dealing with these solutions, three complementary objectives have been pursued: From a methodological point of view, our results enabled to determine a reliable, valid and useful postural evaluation procedure for the patient's diagnosis and follow up. From a fundamental point of view, our results allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in postural control.

Digital technologies are omnipresent in children and adolescents’ daily life. Interactive technologies such as touchscreens seem particularly attractive and easy to use, bringing benefits on school learning. The question arises whether these benefits can be also observed with other types of activities that are not subject to learning. In this work, we will specifically focus on creative framework. Although creativity is conceived as a multifactorial phenomenon, sensorimotor components have been very little integrated in creative process. Yet, Dietrich and Haider (2015) recently suggested that the process allowing to generate a creative idea would use the same mechanism than the one used to control a real or imagined action through sensorimotor prediction. Thereby, sensory afferences being central in sensorimotor action control, could be considered as one of the constitutive factors of creativity. In this thesis, we question this relationship between creativity and sensorimotricity. Through 4 experimental studies, we varied available sensory afferences in a creative drawing task by asking 6 to 15 years old children and adolescents to draw on touchscreen with finger, with stylus, and on paper with a pen. The results indeed show that enhancing sensory afferences with finger on touchscreen enhances originality at all age. However, lowering sensory afferences with the use of a stylus does not bring to the same effects on originality performance according to the age of participants. In children aged 6-7 years old, using a stylus on tablet does not modify originality performances. After 8 years old, children realize more original drawings with the use of a stylus on touchscreen than with a pen on paper. The observed benefits on creative performances from this age could be explained by the acquired capacity to compensate a sensory loss, that allow to maximize sensory information, thus leading to originality benefits. These benefits with finger and with stylus are also observed with adolescents who, because of disruptive behavior disorder, show difficulties in mobilizing cognitive capacities. Qualitative data acquired from adolescents with this trouble yields a major preference for tactile rather than paper support, that would be linked to a higher sensory mobilization in the production of graphic gestures on the interface. We discuss of the implication of these results for the creative process nature and its development, as well as using sensory afference to help typical and atypical children and adolescents to mobilize cognitive capacities more efficiently

Despite the fact that olfactory perception arouses scientific interest, cognitive aspects are rarely studied. This PhD thesis aims to analyze in the framework of the categorization theories, the influence of the context on cognitive aspects linked to categorization, description and representation of women's fragrances. In the first area of study, we compared the perception and description of fragrances based upon two tasks (a comparison task of triads and a sorting task) in order to measure the effect of the task on the descriptions variability and on the representation. In the second area of study, we built an olfactory properties typology in order to examine semantic categories underlying olfactory perception at a linguistic level. Our results indicate that 1) the variability of olfactory descriptions is influenced by the context of the task; 2) the fragrance representations are complex and structured around varied elements: "odor", "person" and "atmosphere" and 3) the description of olfactory stimuli heavily relies on figurative language. The results are discussed in the framework of the categorization and knowledge representations models. A methodology of olfactory perception from verbalization is proposed

Navigating in a familiar or unfamiliar environment is a frequent challenge for human beings. Many patients with brain injury suffer from topographical difficulties, which influences their autonomy in daily life. Virtual Reality Tools enable the evaluation of largescale spatial navigation and spatial memory, resembling a real environment. Virtual reality also permits to add stimuli to the software. These stimuli can be contextual, that is to say linked to the task that participants have to accomplish in the Virtual Environment, or non-contextual, i.e. with no link with the require task. This thesis investigates whether visual or auditory stimuli influence spatial navigation and memory in Virtual Environments of patients with brain injury or with a neurodegenerative disease. The first part of the thesis showed contextual auditory stimuli type a sonar effect and the names of products of the shopping list improved spatial navigation of brain-injured patients during a shopping task in the virtual supermarket VAP-S. The second part of this thesis highlighted that non-contextual auditory stimuli with a high perceptual or cognitive salience decreased spatial navigation performance of brain-injured patients during a shopping task in the VAP-S. The third part of this thesis showed that visual cues like directional arrows and salient landmarks improved spatial navigation and some aspects of spatial memory of patients with Alzheimer’s disease or Mild Cognitive Impairments during a navigation task in a virtual district. The last part of this thesis demonstrated that auditory cues, i.e. beeping sounds indicating the directions, increased spatial navigation in a virtual district of patients who have had a stroke with contra-lesional visual and auditory neglect. These results suggest that some visual and auditory stimuli could be helpful for spatial navigation and memory tasks in patients with brain injury of neuro-degenerative disease. It further offers new research avenues for neuro-rehabilitation, such as the use of augmented reality in real-life settings to support the navigational capabilities of these patients

Methods to evaluate night-vision devices present an evident lack of technique preventing the testing of these devices with the operators themselves. To set up these methodology types and establish a link between evaluations in laboratory and flight tests, subjects’ performances were measured thanks to various methodologies in order to compare different night-vision systems. The final aim is to improve the predictability of laboratory evaluation to better prepare flight tests. A first series of experiment deals with the implementation of sensory methodologies thanks to the improvement of two classic methods: visual acuity measure and contrast sensitivity evaluation. The results enabled us to discuss the role of accommodation/convergence conflict in the type 2 systems, with tubes IT moved at each side of the head. A difference in contrast sensitivity between type 1 and type 2 systems seems to be confirmed. A second series of experiment proposes a new cognitive methodological approach with the development of two new methods called "simulation" and "stimulation". In the first study, the detection is influenced by the subject’s experience, night level and contrast sensitivity function, whereas decision-making seems only to be dependent on experience and contrast. With functional night-vision systems, detection and decision-making are dependent on night level. The last part discusses the modifications made to existing sensory methods and to the new developed cognitive methods. The methodological contributions are also presented, as well as other experimental approaches to set up. In conclusion, the experiments led including humans “in the buckle” brought new methods to evaluate night-vision devices. It appears as well that according to the type of experiment led, it is essential/very important to properly select the chosen population, as regards to the visual performance criteria, but also as regards to the subject’s operational experiment

This work aimed to assess the place of cognitive sensorial information processing in balance performance. These results were discussed in terms of age-dependent evolution of the relative places of automatic and cognitive processings in balance performance, particularly for the validation of the assumption that ageing induces a requisite increase of cognitive load with expression in a large mobilisation of attentional resources and cognitive operative processes which, in the same time, decreased in availability and potentiality
Chambers, Claire. "Context effects in ambiguous frequency shifts : a new paradigm to study adaptive audition." Thesis, Paris 5, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA05T099/document.
In this thesis, we developed a new experimental paradigm for studying how recent sensory history (the context) affects a basic aspect of auditory perception, the comparison of successive frequency components. Stimuli were devised to include ambiguous transitions between frequency components, as it was hypothesized that such an ambiguity would make the task especially prone to reveal context effects. Six psychophysical experiments are reported. Using pairs of Shepard tones (Shepard, J. Acoust. Soc. Am., 1964), we first demonstrate a strong hysteresis effect when successive pairs are judged, whereby past trials affect current judgments. We then isolate the cause of this context effect, by contrasting perceptual reports for a same ambiguous test pair when preceded by different contexts. We show that frequency shifts are preferentially reported when they encompass a frequency regions that was stimulated during the context. This context effect is rapidly introduced, as a single tone as short as 20ms can produce a reliable bias. Yet it also has an enduring effect on perception, persisting over more than 30s. Using random chords pairs designed to include ambiguous frequency shifts, it then shown that the context effect is not specific to Shepard tones but rather reflects a generic process acting on the tonotopic representation of sounds. Finally, the context effect is modulated by both low-level (ear-of-entry) and high-level (selective attention) manipulations, suggesting an interplay between several processing stages for the underlying neural mechanism. Our findings show that one of the most ubiquitous and basic tasks of the auditory system, comparing successive frequency components, is not a fixed function of the physical stimulus. Rather, it is highly malleable and depends on the ongoing context

This PhD project aims at understanding better choice, liking and consumption of vegetables in 8- to -11-years children in natural situation of a school meal. In a first step, we focused on subjects (i.e. children) and studied their visual and perceptual knowledge of vegetables. We showed that carrots, tomatoes and lettuce were the three most familiar vegetables in children. Lexical knowledge of vegetables increases with age and is more important in rural children than urban ones. We did not observe a link between perceptual knowledge and children’s characteristics (i.e. age, gender, living environment or the possession of a vegetable garden at home). In a second step, we manipulated the shape and the duration of cooking for two objects (i.e. vegetables) selected at the end of the first step (i.e. a well-known and appreciated vegetable: carrots; a less known and less appreciated vegetable: broccoli). We studied the influence of these factors on children’s food behavior. Results showed that arrows are more frequently chosen, appreciated and consumed with a familiar shape and when less cooked. Visually, children preferred the broccoli presented in small florets rather than the big ones. The duration of cooking did not influence choices, liking and consumption of broccoli. The third step dealt with the influence of a situational variable: food labels. Firstly, we examined children’s preferences for several food labels, and secondly we studied the influence of these labels on children’s choice and consumption of two new recipes of carrots and broccoli. Adding a food label referring to the name of the vegetable was an effective mean to increase the probability that children would choose a new vegetable dish provided that no other more appreciated alternative was presented simultaneously. This research underlined the importance of children’s familiarity with the vegetable and its culinary form in their acceptance: children choose, appreciate and consume much more a familiar vegetable with a familiar culinary form. Also, the results showed that the food label participate to children food choice and underlined the importance of situational factors in food behavior

This research is part of a broader study of postural control and focussed particularly on the sensorimotor and perceptual-cognitive behaviours of gymnasts. The first goal was to characterize the relationships between the sensorimotor processes used in the maintenance of two motor skills (handstand and erected posture) and the performer's perceptual style (visual field dependence-independence), according to the level of gymnastics expertise. The second goal was to determine the effects of, firstly, light contact and, secondly, tactile-kinaesthetic training on postural performance in handstand. The results of the first three studies highlighted the effect of expertise on the use of sensory information to maintain posture both during the handstand and in erected posture. As opposed to the non-experts, a high level of practice allowed the expert gymnasts to use types of sensory information interchangeably when some was missing or disturbed. Moreover, gymnastics expertise had an effect on the more general perceptual choices and on the relationships between these choices and the sensorimotor processes used during postural maintenance. Lastly, the final two studies tested two methods of improving postural performance in handstand. The results revealed a stabilizing effect of light touch on handstand maintenance, both for the experts and non-experts. Moreover, tactile-kinaesthetic training had a beneficial effect on the control of this specific posture

Vision plays an essential role in the control of movement (Lee, Lishman & Thomson, 1982 ; Pailhous & Bonnet, 1989). It allows us to pick various information concerning our environment. Sensory information (visual, auditive, proprioceptive), inform us about our environment, are essential to the control and orientation of posture (Massion, 1997). In horse riding, the horse rider has to adopt an uncommon posture : sitting on a horse. Balance is a decisive element, depending on the interaction of the sensorimotor systems of the rider. Very little research has been devoted to understand the sensory motor interaction in the practice of horse riding. The main objective of this thesis was to evaluate the role of visual information in horse riders’ postural control, considering different expertise levels : expert riders and non-expert riders. Our research was based on five experimental studies, including classical postural tests on force platform, specific postural tests on the Persival simulator, perceptual experiments and visual search. The results show 1) a dominance of proprioceptive information over visual information in the control of balance ; 2) more control and stability of posture among expert riders, and, more specifically of the head ; 3) a different way of using visual information according to the rider’s expertise. These experiments allow a better understanding of the horse-riding expertise. Perspectives of this PhD work are located at the fundamental research level as well as at the applied level, regarding training and the acquisition of basic horse-riding skills

Brain oscillations in the beta frequency band (15-35Hz) are observed in a wide range of tasks, from simple movements to complex perceptual and cognitive tasks. Here, our objective was to determine whether spatially distinct beta-band EEG activities (i.e. observed within different neural circuits) could be identified in the context of a motor adaptation task. For example, to reach a visual target while wearing prismatic glasses, shifting the entire visual scene laterally, at least two types of adaptive mechanisms come into play: automatic/implicit sensorimotor adaptation processes and cognitive/explicit mechanisms, which allow reducing motor errors within a few trials. Our observations strongly suggest that, in the context of a motor adaptation task, beta activity within lateral centro-parietal regions reflects automatic/implicit adaptive processes, while activity within medial motor areas is modulated in relation to cognitive mechanisms of movement control

This research is part of the area of sensorial marketing and followed a perspective that views the shopping as a source of pleasure for the consumer. We measured the main and interactive effects of the olfactory condition, the lighting and the temperature from a store on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral consumer's responses. In parallel, we assessed the mediating role of cognitive and emotional reactions as well as the moderating role of hedonic value that can be gathered from a shopping experience. Our study took place in a real market conditions, in a ready-to-wear tricot clothes store in Brazil, where we manipulated the olfactory condition (no sent or with a pleasant "refreshing" scent), lighting ("hot" light 2700 K or "cold" light 6500 K) and air temperature (23°C or 18°C). According to our results, the lighting did not influence the consumers' reactions. However, the 18°C temperature had a more positive effect than the 23°C temperature on the feelings of stimulation and pleasure, as well as over the evaluation of the store atmosphere. The presence of a scent, in turn, has positively influenced the amount of time customers stayed in the store, and the time they devoted to try clothes. Finally, according to our analysis, we noted that the effect of the pleasure derived from the shopping experience on consumer behavior decreases to the extent that this pleasure increases. So, we conclude that the value of the shopping experience plays a moderating role on the relationship pleasure-behavior, especially, because according to our results, this relationship does not appear to be linear but curvilinear

Technical, functional, ergonomic and aesthetic perfection: luxury is in a perpetual search for excellence in order to be as desirable as possible. Satisfying these aspects raises a particular challenge because it is based on subjective criteria. Thus, the perceived quality of a product, let alone a luxury product, has a complex and unpredictable multidimensional character. In our case, it is not enough to simply increase the quantity or quality of the functions offered to make the product more attractive and contribute to its success. Rather, it is a question of mastering the sensations felt by a customer who comes into contact with the product. We will talk about mastering the sensory perception of the product. Through this research, we wanted to demonstrate that we could integrate the analysis of sensory perception in design while considering the constraints of the luxury market. For the subjectivity of feelings, we set up a process of identification, objectification and integration in design of different criteria that make up the perceived quality of a luxury product. This methodology makes use of several evaluation tools for sensory perception but also creates new ones. All these tools have been tested different luxury watch and jewelry companies in order to evaluate their relevance. We therefore propose applied research in several companies with a scientific, methodological and industrial impact

The work presented in this dissertation is based on the combination of two research paradigms in the field of cognitive psychology: mental rotation and intermodal/inter-task transfer of learning. In our first study (Experiments 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, and 2b), the objective was to evaluate the processing dependence/independence of visual and tactile information during two mental rotation tasks: the Mental Rotation Test (Vandenberg & Kuse, 1978) and an object mental rotation task (Shepard & Metzler, 1971). Using an intra-subject experimental design, we compared four experimental conditions including intramodal learning: 1. Visual-Visual ; 2. Tactile-Tactile, and intermodal transfer: 3. Visual-Tactile ; 4. Tactile-Visual. Subjects performed two successive tasks in similar perceptual conditions or different perceptual conditions (session 1 and session 2). Our results revealed that mental rotation can depend on treatment processes of mental representations specific to the perceptual modality being used. The information derived from visual prior experience can be used in the tactile condition, whereas we observed few significant tactile transfers in the visual condition. Visual and tactile treatments on complex three-dimensional objects thus permit specific mental imagery strategies (Visual-Visual-IM vs. Tactile-Spatial-IM), derived from different perceptual exploration strategies (visual-global vs. tactile-spatial)
