En los últimos años, el consumo de servicios multimedia ha aumentado y se prevé que esta tendencia continúe en un futuro próximo, convirtiendo el tema de la evaluación de la Calidad de la Experiencia (QoE) en un tema muy importante para valorar el servicio de los proveedores. En este sentido, la optimización de la QoE recibe cada vez más atención ya que las soluciones actuales no han tenido en cuenta, la adaptación, la viabilidad, la rentabi-lidad y la fiabilidad. La presente memoria se centra en la caracterización, diseño, desarrollo y evaluación de diferentes aplicaciones multimedia, con el fin de optimizar la QoE. Por tanto, este trabajo investiga la influencia que la infraestructura de redes, las características de los videos y los terminales de los usuarios, presentan en la QoE de los servicios multimedia actuales en Internet. Esta tesis se basa en la investigación exhaustiva de la evaluación subjetiva y objetiva de QoE en redes heterogéneas. Los desafíos y cuestiones relacionados con el estado de la técnica y se discuten en esta disertación. En la primera fase, diseñamos una metodología de prueba para evaluar la QoE en la transmisión de video en directo y a través de plataformas de video bajo demanda en redes Wi-Fi y celulares. A partir de esta fase inicial, propondremos los problemas a investigar y las preguntas para resolver a lo largo de esta disertación. Nuestra metodología hace uso de métricas subjetivas y objetivas para evaluar la QoE percibida por los usuarios finales. Se realiza un conjunto de experimentos en laboratorio donde nuestra metodología de pruebas es aplicada. Los resultados obtenidos se recopilan y analizan para extraer las relaciones entre la Calidad de servicio (QoS) y QoE. A partir de estos resultados, se propone un mapeo de QoS-QoE que permite predecir la QoE. En la siguiente fase de la investigación, desarrollamos los algoritmos de optimización de QoE basados en la administración del sistema de red para redes Wi-Fi y celulares. Los algoritmos usan los parámetros clave que se tuvieron en cuenta para la evaluación de QoE. El objetivo de estos algorit-mos es proporcionar un sistema de gestión flexible para las redes con el ob-jetivo de lograr un equilibrio controlado entre la maximización de QoE y la eficiencia del uso de los recursos. Por último, se diseña el banco de pruebas del sistema para evaluar el rendimiento de las aplicaciones de servicios multimedia genéricos en los diferentes entornos de prueba. El banco de pruebas del sistema se basa en el enfoque de virtualización; usa los recursos compartidos de un hardware fí-sico para virtualizar todos los componentes. El banco de pruebas virtualiza-do proporciona funciones de red virtualizadas para diferentes escenarios, como Internet (las redes de distribución de contenido - CDNs) y redes inalámbricas. Por lo tanto, se adoptan protocolos livianos y mecanismos ágiles en el sistema, para proporcionar un mejor servicio a los usuarios fina-les. Los resultados de QoE son proporcionados a los proveedores de servi-cios de acuerdo con los parámetros que se definen en el proceso de la eva-luación. Como resultado hemos obtenido un sistema que presenta un servi-cio rentable como una forma factible para la evaluación de la prueba.
In recent years, multimedia services consumption has increased and it is expected that this trend will continue in the near future, becoming the evaluation of Quality of Experience (QoE) as a very important issue for assessing the quality of providers' services. In this sense, the optimization of the QoE is progressively receiving much attention considering that current solutions are not based on the adaptation, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. The present dissertation is focused on the characterization, design, development and evaluation of different multimedia applications aimed to optimize the QoE. Therefore, this work investigates the influence that the networks infrastructure, the videos' characteristics and the users' terminals present on QoE of the current Internet multimedia services. The work is based on a comprehensive research of subjective and objective assessments in heterogeneous networks. Challenges and research questions related to the state of the art are discussed in this dissertation. In the first phase of this dissertation, we design a test methodology for assessing QoE of live video streaming and video on demand platforms to be transmitted over Wi-Fi and cellular networks. From this initial step, we will propound the related research issues and questions to solve this dissertation. Our methodology considers the use of subjective and objective metrics to evaluate the QoE perceived by end-users. A set of laboratory experiments is conducted where our proposed methodology is applied. The obtained results are gathered and analyzed to extract the relations between Quality of Service (QoS) and QoE. From the results, we propose a QoS-QoE mapping which allows predicting QoE. In the next phase of the research, we develop QoE-optimization algorithms based on network system management for Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The algorithms use the key parameters that were taken into account for QoE assessment. The goal of these algorithms is to provide a flexible management system for the networks in order to achieve the desirable trade-off between QoE maximization and resource usage efficiency. Lastly, the system testbed is designed in order to evaluate the performance of generic multimedia services applications for the different environments under test. The system testbed is based on virtualization approach; it uses the shared resources of a physical hardware to virtualize all components. The virtualized testbed provides virtualized network functions for the different scenarios such as the Internet (Content Delivery Networks - CDNs) and wireless networks. Therefore, lightweight protocols and agile mechanisms are adopted in the system to provide enhanced service to end-users. The QoE results are reported to the service providers according to the parameters defined in the evaluation process. As a result, we have obtained a cost-effective system, which is considered as a feasible way for test evaluation.

En aquest sentit, l'optimització de la QoE rep cada vegada més atenció degut a que les solucions actuals no tenen en compte, l'adaptació, la viabilitat, el rendiment i la fiabilitat. La present memòria se centra en la caracterització, disseny, desenvolupament i avaluació de diferents aplicacions multimèdia, amb la finalitat d'optimitzar la QoE. Per tant, aquest treball investiga la influència que la infraestructura de les xarxes, les característiques dels videos i els terminals dels usuaris tenen sobre la QoE dels serveis multimèdia actuals d'Iinternet. Aquesta tesi es basa en una recerca exhaustiva de l'avaluació subjectiva i objectiva de QoE en xarxes heterogènies. Els desafiaments i preguntes relacionats amb l'estat de la tècnica es discuteixen en aquesta dissertació. En la primera fase, dissenyem la metodologia de prova per a avaluar la QoE de transmissió de video en directe i de plataformes de video baix demanda en xarxes Wi-Fi i cel·lulars. A partir d'aquest primer pas, proposem els problemes de recerca relacionats i les preguntes a resoldre a través d'a-questa tesi. L'objectiu d'aquests algoritmes és proporcionar un sistema de gestió flexible per ales xarxes que permetrá aconseguir un equilibri con-trolat entre la maximització de la QoE i l'us eficient dels recursos. Finalment, el banc de proves del sistema està dissenyat per a avaluar el rendiment de les aplicacions de serveis multimèdia genèrics en els diferents entorns de prova. El banc de proves del sistema es basa en l'enfocament de virtualització; usa els recursos compartits d'un equip físic que virtualitza tots els components. El banc de proves virtualitzat proporciona les funcions de xarxa virtualitzades per a diferents escenaris, com Internet (les xarxes de distribució de continguts - CDNs) i xarxes sense fils. Per tant, s'adopten protocols lleugers i mecanismes àgils en el sistema per a proporcionar un millor servei als usuaris finals. Els resultats de QoE son proporcionats als proveïdors de serveis d'acord amb els paràmetres que es defineixen en el procés de l'avaluació. Com a resultat, hem obtés un sistema que presenta un servei rendible i com a viable per a l'avaluació de la prova.

With the emergence of wireless communications and mobile computing. new ways for people to interact with each other and their surrounding environment are emerging. Mobile devices, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with wireless communication interfaces are able to communicate directly with each other if they are "close enough". If such devices are also able to act as message relays (routers), then a very powerful facility in the form of a mobile ad hoc network can be made available to applications. Although present day PDAs have sufficient networking and processing capabilities to support interesting interactive applications, as yet, there is hardly any software available for constructing and maintaining ad hoc networks and not many practical interactive applications have been built and tested. Rather, much of the research work is still at simulation and modelling stage. Thus it is difficult at this stage to decide what system support (middleware) for interactive applications a PDA should contain. This work is a step in the direction of remedying the situation by considering a class of applications where interactions between users can be supported by one of the nodes in the ad hoc network acting as a server. The thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of three such applications on PDAs, and based on that experience, describes what system support (middleware) for such applications is required. These applications are: Auction, Bingo game and Chatting that work over ad hoc networks. The work presented here can be used as a basis for deciding how the current generation of PDA operating systems can be extended for supporting ad hoc networking and what additional services are required for interactive applications.

This thesis has been carried out in cooperation with a company which develops mobile sensor platforms. The sensors measure different types of data such as temperature, pressure etc.. They will communicate through the internet with a server that stores data in a database. This system will be controlled and monitored through a web page. The project's aim has been to develop this system and to implement a server, a database, a website and a client application that simulates sensor signals. In addition, the performance of the server should be measured and a usability test should be performed. To measure the performance of the server, different variants of the client program, which continuously sent data from an increasing number of clients to the server, were developed. In the usability test the participants had to solve a number of tasks after which they answered a survey and were interviewed.The result is a communication system that works according to the requirements and a client program that is also used for testing the server. The investigation of the server performance showed a maximum bandwidth of about 370 kb/s while serving up to 70 clients. The database consumed 95% of the bandwith. However, with a rising number of clients there was a continous decline in the performance. In usability tests, there was a big difference in how people perceive computer programs depending on their experience and education. For this application, the server worked well, but if the project is to be developed into a large scale, it then becomes relevant to move onto an asynchronous working server instead of a thread-server. Queries to a database (MySQL) considerably decreases bandwidth and should be optimized where possible.

Visualizing large datasets poses challenges in terms of how to create visualization applications with good performance. Due to the amount of data, transfer speed and processing speed may lead to waiting times that cause users to abandon the application. It is therefore important to select methods and techniques that can handle the data in as efficient a way as possible. The aim of this study was to investigate if a server-client architecture had better performance in a visualization web application than a purely client-side architecture in terms of selected performance metrics and network load, and whether the selection of implementation language and tools affected the performance of the server-client architecture implementation. To answer these questions, a visualization application was implemented in three different ways: a purely client-side implementation, a server-client implementation using Node.js for the server, and a server-client implementation using Flask for the server. The results showed that the purely client-side architecture suffered from a very long page loading time and high network load but was able to process data quickly in response to user actions in the application. The server-client architecture implementations could load the page faster, but responding to requests took longer, whereas the amount of data transferred was much lower. Furthermore, the server-client architecture implemented with a Node.js server performed better on all metrics than the application implemented with a Flask server. Overall, when taking all measurements into consideration, the Node.js server architecture may be the best choice among the three when working with a large dataset, although the longer response time compared to the purely client-side architecture may cause the application to seem less responsive.

Having timely and accurate information is essential for effective management practices and optimization of limited resources. Information is scattered throughout organizations and must be easily accessible. A new solution is needed for effective and efficient management of data in today's distributed client/server environment. Java is destined to become a language for distributed computing. Java Development Kit (JDK) comes with a broad range of classes for network and database programming. Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) is one such class for providing client/server database access. There are many different approaches in using JDBC, ranging from low level socket programming, to a more abstract middleware approach. This thesis will analyze three different approaches: Sockets, Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and Commercial Middleware servers. Among the three approaches this thesis examined, database access through RMI is the most viable approach because it uses an effective distributed object model. RMI abstracts the communication interface to the level of a procedure call. Instead of working directly with sockets, programmers can invoke a remote procedure as if it resided locally

Modem organizations struggle with controlling computer platform maintenance expenses. This maintenance effort is further complicated by the existence of multiple, heterogeneous platform environments. A diverse composition of Computer maintenance engineers is responsible for diagnosing and carrying out tasks required to assure quality platform performance. Client/server notification systems are an effective tool designed to manage these computer resources, and yet one of the least mature within the computer platform maintenance domains. The system requirements for a new expert system generalized inference engine were developed based upon research and analysis of expert system generalized inference methods to date, in addition to related efforts accomplished in the Client/server notification system arena. These computer notification systems have done little to address the issues related to the increased complexities in monitoring and managing the maintenance of multiple computer platforms, each with their own unique environments and applications. The systems requirements for a generalized inference engine that utilize binding, matching and unification to categorize alarms written in Prolog have been developed and validated. When the inferencing method was applied to the notification interface, it generalized the heterogeneous data. The rules were applied to an instance of a frame through unification. The inference engine then identified the correct node reporting the error, and applied the appropriate resolution. The requirements also detailed an explanation. The system requirements for the new expert system generalized inference engine provide for effective centralized processing of multiple computer alarms generated by diverse systems. The systems requirements have been tested via test case execution to verify the logical processing of the new generalized inference engine. The results indicate that the growing discipline of Computer maintenance engineering will benefit from the system requirements for the generalized inference engine that provides for effective centralized processing of computer alarms generated by diverse computer platforms. The implication is that organizations will be able to achieve cost-effective centralized heterogeneous platform maintenance with fewer Computer maintenance engineers, each with a lesser degree of expertise required on multiple platforms.

As Local Area Networks becoming increasingly popular, the need to develop protocols for remote login, client/server based peer to peer connections, and event driven windows protocol for IBM PC/PS2 is ever greater. This thesis is primary devoted to the development of a real-time multitasking system for the IBM PC/PS2, and a client/server, event driven Windows protocol similar to X-Window protocol available in computers based on Unix platform. In addition, features such as interprocess communication queues, virtual windows, heap managers which are necessities in a distributed environment are provided also. Program developer may include this multitasking program in the kernel of the PC network operating system such as Novell Netware, and Microsoft Lan Manager. Consequently, a multitasking kernel is developed to provide dynamic tasking spawning, fast task switching, and MS-DOS independent dynamic memory allocation. In addition, a window manager based on this multitasking kernel is developed to manage dialog windows or tasking windows in a distributed environment. Windows may be sent across the network and be displayed remotely.

The Naval Security Group currently requires a modem architecture to merge existing command databases into a single Enterprise Information System through which each command may manipulate administrative data. There are numerous technologies available to build and implement such a system. Component- based architectures are extremely well-suited for creating scalable and flexible three-tier Client/Server systems because the data and business logic are encapsulated within objects, allowing them to be located anywhere on a network. The first tier represents the visual aspects of the data on the client side. The middle tier consists of server objects that represent the persistent data and enforce the business logic functions. The third tier maintains the database management systems. The client interacts with the middle-tier server objects via Common Object Request Broker Architecture. CORBA provides a language and platform independent architecture that enables objects to transparently make requests and receive responses in a distributed environment. Java is an object- oriented, multi-threaded, secure mobile code system that allows applications to run on all major computing platforms. This thesis examines the design of an EIS using Java Applets that use Inter-Orb Protocol to communicate with CORBA middle- tier server objects. The third tier will incorporate Java Database Connectivity to communicate with database management systems.

This thesis is concerned with the role played by software tools in the analysis and dissemination of linguistic corpora and their contribution to a more widespread adoption of corpora in different fields. Chapter 1 contains an overview of some of the most relevant corpus analysis tools available today, presenting their most interesting features and some of their drawbacks. Chapter 2 begins with an explanation of the reasons why none of the available tools appear to satisfy the requirements of the user community and then continues with technical overview of the current status of the new system developed as part of this work. This presentation is followed by highlights of features that make the system appealing to users and corpus builders (i.e. scholars willing to make their corpora available to the public). The chapter concludes with an indication of future directions for the projects and information on the current availability of the software. Chapter 3 describes the design of an experiment devised to evaluate the usability of the new system in comparison to another corpus tool. Usage of the tool was tested in the context of a documentation task performed on a real assignment during a translation class in a master's degree course. In chapter 4 the findings of the experiment are presented on two levels of analysis: firstly a discussion on how participants interacted with and evaluated the two corpus tools in terms of interface and interaction design, usability and perceived ease of use. Then an analysis follows of how users interacted with corpora to complete the task and what kind of queries they submitted. Finally, some general conclusions are drawn and areas for future work are outlined.

This paper describes a distributed network client-server system developed for researchers to perform real-time or near-real-time analyses on ensembles of telemetry data previously done in post-flight. The client-server software approach provides extensible computing and real-time access to data at multiple remote client sites. Researchers at remote sites can share similar information as those at the test site. The system has been used successfully in numerous commercial, academic and NASA wide aircraft flight testing.

This paper describes a PC-based Advanced Telemetry Processing and Display System (ATPDS)- a highend, real-time telemetry processing and display system implemented on a COTS PC platform. for A network-centric architecture was chosen from candidate architectures as the most viable for the ATPDS. The network-centric architecture is Windows NT-based, client/server based, supporting clients and servers on both local or remote PC workstations. The architecture supports distributing processing loads across multiple workstations, optimizing mission processing requirements. The advantage of this system is its flexibility and expandability with low acquisition and life-cycle support costs. The ATPDS allows the user to configure one or more small systems into a larger high-end system based on varying mission requirements.

Geographic Information Systems and Network Information Systems are important tools for our society, used for handling geographic spatial data and large information networks. It is therefore important to make sure such tools are of high quality. GIS/NIS applications typically deal with a lot of data, possibly resulting in heavy loads of network traffic. This work aims to evaluate two different communications protocols and serialization formats for client-server communications efficiency in GIS/NIS applications. Specifically, these are HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, Java Object Serialization and Google's Protocol Buffers. They were each implemented directly into a commercial GIS/NIS environment and evaluated by measuring two signature server calls in the system. Metrics that were examined are call duration, HTTP overhead size and HTTP payload size. The results suggest that HTTP/2 and Google's Protocol Buffers outperform HTTP/1.1 and Java Object Serialization respectively. An 87% decrease in HTTP overhead size was achieved when switching from HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2. The HTTP payload size is also shown to decrease with the use of Protocol Buffers rather than Java Object Serialization, especially for communications where data consist of many different object types. Concerning call duration, the results suggest that the choice of communications protocol is more significant than the choice of serialization format for communications containing little data, while the opposite is true for communications containing much data.
Geografiska informationssystem och nätverksinformationssystem är viktiga redskap för vårt samhälle, vilka används för hantering av geografisk data och stora informationsnätverk. Det är därför viktigt att se till att sådana system är av hög kvalitet. GIS/NIS-applikationer behandlar vanligtvis stora mängder data, vilket kan resultera i mycket nätverkstrafik. I det här arbetet utvärderas två olika kommunikationsprotokoll och serialiseringsformat för kommunikationseffektivitet mellan klient och server i GIS/NIS-applikationer. Specifikt är dessa HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, Java Objektserialisering och Googles Protocol Buffers. De implementerades var och en i en kommersiell GIS/NIS-miljö och utvärderades genom mätningar av två signaturanrop i systemet. De aspekter som observerades är kommunikationstiden, mängden HTTP-overhead och mängden HTTP-payload. Resultaten tyder på att HTTP/2 och Googles Protocol Buffers presterar bättre än HTTP/1.1 respektive Java Objektserialisering. En 87% minskning av mängden HTTP overhead uppnåddes då HTTP/1.1 ersattes med HTTP/2. En minskning av mängden HTTP payload observeras också med användning av Protocol Buffers snarare än Java Objektserialisering, särskilt för kommunikationer där data innehåller många olika objekttyper. Gällande kommunikationstiden tyder resultaten på att valet av kommunikationsprotokoll påverkar mer än valet av serialiseringsformat för kommunikationer med små mängder data, medan motsatsen gäller för kommunikationer med mycket data.

E-health systems are widely used in today’s world, and have a stillbrighter future with the rapid development of smart phones. A fewyears ago, e-health system could only be carried out on computers.But recently, people are using this as a phone application, so thatthey can get information at any time and anywhere. In addition,some smart phones can already measure heart rate and bloodpressure, for example, ‚Instant Heart Rate‛ and ‚Blood PressureMonitor‛. By using these kinds of applications, users can easilymeasure their health data and store them in their mobile phones.However, the problem of privacy has been attracting people’sattention. After uploading their data to the database, users do havethe right to protect their privacy. For instance, even the doctor hasthe authority to obtain the health record; the user's name can behidden, so that the doctor does not know who the owner of this datais. This problem also includes anonymization, pseudonymity,unlinkability, unobservability and many other aspects.In this thesis work, an android application is proposed to solve thisproblem. Users can set their own rules, and all data requests shouldbe dealt with by calling the rules. In addition, a module in the serveris to be developed to carry out the whole process of privacypreserving and the users’ data should be stored in the database.A standard for users to set rules is determined, which is bothdynamical and flexible. The application realizes some additional rulechecking functions to determine whether users have set a valid rule.Privacy rules can be created, deleted, or uploaded. In addition, userscan update their health record and upload it to the database. Theserver will call different protocols to deal with different requests, andthe data which obtains the requests is responded to by calling theusers’ own privacy rules.

This paper presents a case study of the Western Range Centralized Telemetry Processing Subsystem (WR CTPS). This system was developed by Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems and Global Services and L-3 Communications Telemetry-West as part of the Range Standardization and Automation (RSA) IIA program. Requirements included real-time simultaneous acquisition of 16 PCM streams at rates of up to 30M bits per second; real-time processing; and data display on workstations connected over a gigabit Ethernet network. This system is designed for range safety and needs to be fault-tolerant while maintaining 100 percent data availability in the event of a single failure during an operation. The development of such a system demanded a rigorous Systems Engineering approach to ensure the successful upgrade and deployment onto the range infrastructure. This case study provides an overview of the system technical requirements and its architecture. The summary presents challenges encountered during the development and lessons learned while meeting them.

Redan 1991 skrev denerkände kritikern Stewart Alsop, dåvarande chefredaktör på InfoWorld att den sista stordatornskulle tas ur bruk den 15 mars 1996. Det visade sig att detta uttalande var felaktigt, vilketStewart Alsop även erkände i InfoWorld bara dagar innan hans förutsägelse skulle ha infallit.När vi nu går in i ytterligare ett paradigmskifte i och med att många tjänster går över tillmolnet, ställer jag i denna uppsats frågan om IBMs stordator har en framtid i en molnbaseradIT värld, och hur den i så fall ser ut. Syftet är att genom litteraturstudier och intervjuer undersöka om IBMs stordator kan överlevaytterligare en genomomgripande teknikrevolution eller om den har spelat ut sin roll.Undersökningen mynnar ut i slutsatserna att IBMs stordator har en stark position i dagsläget,framförallt inom bank och finanssektorn d.v.s. inom branscher med speciellt höga kravbeträffande tillgänglighet, skalbarhet, och säkerhet. Sannolikt har stordatorn en viktig roll attspela även för framtidens satsningar i molnet. IBM erbjuder redan idag molnlösningar sominkluderar mainframes, och det framgick även i de intervjuer som gjordes på IBM, att de seren ljus framtid för IBMs stordatorer. With the advancement in information technology, online assessments are getting more attention and online examinations are regarded as important parts of online learning. Online examinations can be easily taken by remote students, help the students get exam results quickly and save their time; online examinations also aid instructors in collecting students' exam answers and generating the exam reports effectively. In addition, online examinations can help reduce cost and save trees for our world. Multimedia elements like images, graphics, video and audio have been widely integrated into online learning environments. They not only help instructors design more engaging online learning content, but also help provide more interactive and pleasant learning experience for learners. However, integrating multimedia elements into online examination systems is rarely reported. Multimedia elements generally consume amounts of computing resources in a separated software system running on a single computer. "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" has become a new software paradigm and cloud-based software systems are becoming more attractive due to their dynamic scalability and effective usage of computing resources. Yet, how to effectively integrate multimedia elements into a cloud-based software system for online examinations is not significantly investigated. Although a variety of online-assessment tools have been developed, few of them adopt the "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" paradigm and most of them focus on the assessment in a specific domain or an application area with short of multimedia elements. There is a lack of a comprehensive software solution for online multimedia examinations. This thesis tries to utilize the "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" paradigm, design and develop a cloud-bAsed softwaRe systEm for oNline multimediA examinationS (ARENAS), and explore a comprehensive software solution for the online assessment field. ARENAS employs a multi-tiered client-server architecture and includes five subsystem modules: user module, question repository module, exam module, exam report module and configuration module. The developed cloud-based software system can present online questions with multimedia elements, and also support a myriad of question types, flexible accounts to the exam-takers, randomized question order in an online exam, flexible grading mechanisms, and analytical exam reports. For instructors, the developed system can help design more engaging online questions; for exam-takers, the developed system can help provide more user-friendly experience; for other educators and researchers, the design and development processes of ARENAS can be taken as a reference to designing and developing other large-scale cloud-based educational software systems.

Denna rapport beskriver utvecklandet av en applikation till operativsystemet Android. Här sätts utvecklingen av applikationen i förhållande till god användbarhet och hantering av resurser på en mindre plattform. En server med tillhörande databas kommunicerar med applikationen som klient. De båda utgör tillsammans helheten i ett system designat för bokningsbolaget Current and Able, verksamt i Sverige, som önskar presentera sitt utbud av exklusiva varor och tjänster direkt till fans av bolagets artister.   I projektet avhandlas grundläggande klasser och komponenter för utveckling av applikationer till Android och hur de bäst samverkar för att optimera användandet av resurser. Java användes huvudsakligen som programmeringsspråk. På serversidan utvecklades ett gränssnitt i PHP mot en MySQL databashanterare.
This study describes the development of an application for the operating system Android. We consider the developing of the application in relation to a good user experience and the managing of resources on a smaller device. A server with an appurtenant database communicates with the application as a client. Together they constitute a unity in a system designed to serve Current and Able, a managing and booking music agency in Sweden, who whishes to offer their supply of goods and services to the fans of their related artists.   In this project we deal with basic classes and components regarding development of Android applications and how they interact to achieve the best possible performance when using system resources. Java was the main programming language used. On the server side we developed a graphical user interface in PHP, targeting a MySQL database management system.

Given the current state of input/output (I/O) and storage devices in petascale systems, incremental solutions would be ineffective when implemented in exascale environments. According to the "The International Exascale Software Roadmap", by Dongarra, et al. existing I/O architectures are not sufficiently scalable, especially because current shared file systems have limitations when used in large-scale environments. These limitations are: Bandwidth does not scale economically to large-scale systems, I/O traffic on the high speed network can impact on and be influenced by other unrelated jobs, and I/O traffic on the storage server can impact on and be influenced by other unrelated jobs. Future applications on exascale computers will require I/O bandwidth proportional to their computational capabilities. To avoid these limitations C. Filippidis, C. Markou, and Y. Cotronis proposed the IKAROS framework. In this thesis project, the capabilities of the publicly available elastic-transfer (eT) module which was directly derived from the IKAROS, will be expanded. The eT uses Google’s Gmail service as an utility for efficient meta-data management. Gmail is based on the IMAP protocol, and the existing version of the eT framework implements the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) client-server connection through the ‘‘Inbox’’ module from the Node Package Manager (NPM) of the Node.js programming language. This module was used as a proof of concept, but in a production environment this implementation undermines the system’s scalability and there is an inefficient allocation of the system’s resources when a large number of concurrent requests arrive at the eT′s meta-data server (MDS) at the same time. This thesis solves this problem by adopting an asynchronous non-blocking event driven approach to implement the IMAP client-server connection. This was done by integrating and modifying the ‘‘Imap’’ NPM module from the NPM repository to suit the eT framework. Additionally, since the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format has become one of the most widespread data-interchange formats, eT′s meta-data scheme is appropriately modified to make the system’s meta-data easily parsed as JSON objects. This feature creates a framework with wider compatibility and interoperability with external systems. The evaluation and operational behavior of the new module was tested through a set of data transfer experiments over a wide area network environment. These experiments were performed to ensure that the changes in the system’s architecture did not affected its performance.

Distributed systems can be seen in a variety of applications that is in use today. Tritech provides several systems that to some extent consist of distributed systems of nodes. These nodes collect data and the data have to be processed. A problem that often appears when designing these systems, is deciding where the data should be processed, i.e., which architecture is the most suitable one for the system. Decide the architecture for these systems are not simple, especially since it changes rather quickly due to the development in these areas. The thesis aims to perform a study regarding which factors affect the choice of architecture in a distributed system and how these factors relate to each other. To be able to analyze which factors do affect the choice of architecture and to what extent, a simulator was implemented. The simulator received information about the factors as input, and return one or several architecture configurations as output. By performing qualitative interviews, the input factors to the simulator were chosen. The factors that were analyzed in the thesis was: security, storage, working memory, size of data, number of nodes, data processing per data set, robust communication, battery consumption, and cost. From the qualitative interviews as well as from the prestudy five architecture configuration was chosen. The chosen architectures were: thin-client server, thick-client server, three-tier client-server, peer-to-peer, and cloud computing. The simulator was validated regarding the three given use cases: agriculture, the train industry, and industrial Internet of Things. The validation consisted of five existing projects from Tritech. From the results of the validation, the simulator produced correct results for three of the five projects. By using the simulator results, it could be seen which factors affect the choice of architecture more than others and are hard to provide in the same architecture since they are conflicting factors. The conflicting factors were security together with working memory and robust communication. The factor working memory together with battery consumption also showed to be conflicting factors and is hard to provide within the same architecture. Therefore, according to the simulator, it can be seen that the factors that affect the choice of architecture were working memory, battery consumption, security, and robust communication. By using the results of the simulator, a decision matrix was designed whose purpose was to facilitate the choice of architecture. The evaluation of the decision matrix consisted of four projects from Tritech including the three given use cases: agriculture, the train industry, and industrial Internet of Things. The evaluation of the decision matrix showed that the two architectures that received the most points, one of the architectures were used in the validated project.
Distribuerade system kan ses i en mängd olika applikationer som används idag. Tritech jobbar med flera produkter som till viss del består av distribuerade system av noder. Det dessa system har gemensamt är att noderna samlar in data och denna data kommer på ett eller ett annat sätt behöva bearbetas. En fråga som ofta behövs besvaras vid uppsättning av arkitekturen för sådana projekt är huruvida datan ska bearbetas, d.v.s. vilken arkitektkonfiguration som är mest lämplig för systemet. Att ta dessa beslut har visat sig inte alltid vara helt simpelt, och det ändrar sig relativt snabbt med den utvecklingen som sker på dessa områden. Denna uppsats syftar till att utföra en studie om vilka faktorer som påverkar valet av arkitektur för ett distribuerat system samt hur dessa faktorer förhåller sig mot varandra. För att kunna analysera vilka faktorer som påverkar valet av arkitektur och i vilken utsträckning, implementerades en simulator. Simulatorn tog faktorerna som input och returnerade en eller flera arkitekturkonfigurationer som output. Genom att utföra kvalitativa intervjuer valdes faktorerna till simulatorn. Faktorerna som analyserades i denna uppsats var: säkerhet, lagring, arbetsminne, storlek på data, antal noder, databearbetning per datamängd, robust kommunikation, batteriförbrukning och kostnad. Från de kvalitativa intervjuerna och från förstudien valdes även fem stycken arkitekturkonfigurationer. De valda arkitekturerna var: thin-client server, thick-client server, three-tier client-server, peer-to-peer, och cloud computing. Simulatorn validerades inom de tre givna användarfallen: lantbruk, tågindustri och industriell IoT. Valideringen bestod av fem befintliga projekt från Tritech. Från resultatet av valideringen producerade simulatorn korrekta resultat för tre av de fem projekten. Utifrån simulatorns resultat, kunde det ses vilka faktorer som påverkade mer vid valet av arkitektur och är svåra att kombinera i en och samma arkitekturkonfiguration. Dessa faktorer var säkerhet tillsammans med arbetsminne och robust kommunikation. Samt arbetsminne tillsammans med batteriförbrukning visade sig också vara faktorer som var svåra att kombinera i samma arkitektkonfiguration. Därför, enligt simulatorn, kan det ses att de faktorer som påverkar valet av arkitektur var arbetsminne, batteriförbrukning, säkerhet och robust kommunikation. Genom att använda simulatorns resultat utformades en beslutsmatris vars syfte var att underlätta valet av arkitektur. Utvärderingen av beslutsmatrisen bestod av fyra projekt från Tritech som inkluderade de tre givna användarfallen: lantbruk, tågindustrin och industriell IoT. Resultatet från utvärderingen av beslutsmatrisen visade att de två arkitekturerna som fick flest poäng, var en av arkitekturerna den som användes i det validerade projektet

Nowadays, users of mobile devices are growing. The users expect that they could communicate constantly using their mobile devices while they are also constantly moving. Therefore, there is a need to provide disconnection tolerance of transactions in the mobile devices’ platforms and its synchronization management. System on Mobile Devices (SyD) is taken as one of the examples of mobile devices’ platforms. The thesis studies the existing SyD architecture, from its framework into its kernel, and introduces the proxy module enhancement in SyD to handle disconnection tolerance, including its synchronization. SyD kernel has been extended for the purpose of enabling proxy module. SyDSync has been constructed for synchronization with the proxy. The timeout has been studied for seamless proxy invocation. A Camera application that tries to catch a stolen vehicle has been simulated for the practical purpose of using the proxy module extension.

This Thesis deals with the problems of medical image data management. It analyzes a metadata extraction problem from medical format DICOM and their efficient saving. System is designed as a client-server application. System provides an interface for DICOM data storing, interface for searching, data editing and exporting. System cooperatives with the collaborative system VCE. Implementation was carried out in C++ and PHP language with support of SQLite and MySQL database.
