The thesis of this study is that Classical studies at the University of Malawi, Chancellor College, has been taught with almost no reference to its African context, yet the Classical world, as Ogilvie (1979:2) observed ‘is far removed in time, geography, and philosophy from the world of Africa'. Classics in Malawi is currently taught as in the West, with which it has immediate ties, but if there are to be meaningful gains on the part of students learning Classics in Malawi, we need to contextualise its teaching. The purpose of this study was to identify ways in which Classics teaching at undergraduate level in Malawi might be strengthened in order to make the learning of Classics more meaningful and relevant to the Malawian context, by bridging the gaps between Classical Antiquity and African cultures. The comparative approaches explored will facilitate revision of the University of Malawi Classical Studies curriculum to fulfil the needs and interests of Malawians with the main purpose of contextualising Classical Studies in Malawi. The thesis consists of five chapters which deal with issues relating to Classics teaching in Malawi, namely: the evolution of Classical Studies in Malawi and its challenges; the need to change with the times; views of Latin/Classics teachers about Latin teaching at secondary level; attitudes and perceptions of undergraduate Classics students at Chancellor College to Classics, their perceptions about skills and Classics teaching in general; and views from Classicists from other universities on Classics teaching in general. The main comparative element in the thesis draws on analysis of similar issues in a wide variety of other institutions, including in the UK, the USA, Asia and Africa. Literature relating to Classics pedagogy and Comparative Education approaches, specifically Bereday's Model, has been reviewed. In addition, Classical Reception theory and Social Constructivism theory, particularly with regard to pedagogy, have been surveyed. The study used purposive sampling. Five types of samples and their corresponding data capturing instruments were used, broken down in the following categories: two types of interviews (one involving Malawian Latin or Classics teachers at secondary level, and the other universities' Classics lecturers); review of various documents of international universities' Classics programmes; lecture observations for Classics; and student questionnaire interviews administered to University of Malawi Classics students. The research was a mixed-method design, combining both quantitative and qualitative data analysis, but overall, the study was more qualitative than quantitative. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analysed using the thematic analysis method. These analyses were followed by discussions of the findings of both quantitative and qualitative data. The major conclusions and implications of the study point to the need for a curriculum review of all Classics courses to ensure that Classics becomes more relevant in the Malawian context.

This research aims to answer three questions: why do we study an ancient reception of a text, in the 21st century ? Why do texts change their meanings throughout time ? How does this occur in our case study, Marius’ life? The methodologic approach is based on Jauss’ hermeneutic ; Gramsci’s cultural hegemony ; László’s construction of cultural identity ; Hardwick’s classical reception studies ; Lausberg’s literary communities. Moreover, I propose to define cultural communities. These communities reuse texts according to their own perception (voluntarily or involuntarily). So, I have selected a corpus of authors, linked to Plutarch and Marius, that have been catalogued by different cultural groups. The results show that under the Antonine dynasty Marius’ existence is almost forgotten, but the moral message of Life is systematically reused. The 3rd century exalts the authoritarian Marius, according to the political program of the Severan dynasty and military emperors. The 4th and 5th centuries reused Marius’ life in two ways : Christians describe a bad man, while pagans portray a hero, because the former want to condemn, and the latter want to glorify Roman tradition. These results have already answered the third question, on how meanings change. They allow us to answer the second question: why ? Because of the change of political aims. Finally, I can answer the first one: why is this important for us ? Because contemporary cultural communities reuse classical texts in the same ways as the ancient ones. So, this analysis of the past can explain the present too

This thesis analyzes the narratological structure of the Life of Aaron, a hagiographical text from Late Antique Egypt. Such an analysis has not yet been performed on this text, and the method is still rarely applied to hagiographical literature. In the short term, I intend for this thesis to expose the complex yet consistent structure of this fascinating text. In the long term, I see this thesis as part of a broader movement to incorporate Coptology into the mainstream study of Late Antique literature. My general introduction discusses the Life of Aaron, its manuscript and archaeological evidence, and the state of scholarship on it. Following this, my first chapter compares the text to five significant Late Antique hagiographical works from Egypt: the Life of Antony, the Life of Pachomius, the Historia Monachorum in Aegypto, the Life of Onnophrius, and the Life of Shenoute. My second chapter surveys the ancient (Aristotelian) and modern (structuralist) narratological methods employed in this thesis. Finally, my third chapter contrasts the Life of Aaron’s literal structure with its underlying chronology - what narratologists call the fabula - and exposes the story’s narrator hierarchy. An epilogue then proposes avenues for future research, and the thesis closes with two short appendix graphs which summarize my analysis.

The Greek historian Thucydides wrote his History of the Peloponnesian War because he realized that war would be big, the biggest one ever happened. His work marks a transition of narrative technique: if in Herodotus, the father of History, according to the Latin orator Cicero, the fable persists, in Thucydides there is a break with the mythos, that is, the narrative is constructed by concrete, researched and previously analyzed terms (logos). This removal is, however, seeming. In fact, the historian makes use of reason to make his narrative, as well as he sometimes uses a language âdryâ and âroughâ and he asserts to keep himself stick only to facts. Then how can we relate him to a literary world? We should analyze the picture of the historian from another perspective. Like asserts White (1994), the perspective of how an historical situation depends on the subtlety harmony between the structure of the plot and the group of actions that build, by way of this process, a literary operation, which creates the fiction. The author researches, gathers, analyzes, interprets and, finally, recreates the facts, rearranges and reconfigures them, in order to produce something concrete, impartial. However, the historical is not that simple: there are many possible interpretations, and there are many intersections with other genres (like epic, tragedy and comedy), and with other areas of knowledge (philosophy, politics, economy). Thus, the aim of this work is precisely to point out these characteristic of the text, proving the artistic value, the work with the Greek language and the constructive imagination of the Greek historian when he writes his work.

Ancient histories of the disabled body are often characterised by the extent to which disabled people were cast out, maltreated, and stigmatised. Modern examinations of disability have frequently designated ancient Greece as the origin of the stigma and discrimination that has carried into modern times. This stance is typically supported by two key assumptions about the ancient world. The first is the common assumption that the Greeks practiced infant exposure: that any child deemed not worth rearing would be hurled off cliffs or removed from the city and left as food for beasts. The second is that, because the Greeks prioritised the beautiful body seen throughout classical sculpture, any physical body that differed from the classical rippling musculature, near-nudity, and perfect symmetry, must have been discriminated against. Yet, there is ample evidence from the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. that suggests that there were many different discourses of disability, not simply a collective rejection. This thesis conducts a versatile examination into the discursive and textual evidence for physical disabilities in classical Greece (480 – 323 B.C.) to show that ancient views of disability were more ambivalent and flexible than has hitherto been admitted by a modern scholarship. The evidence does show that ancient Greek peoples were prejudicial against disability, but prejudice is not the whole story. By overemphasising the prominence of the ideal body and neglecting bodies deemed variant, we permit and perpetuate a skewed vision of ancient discourses. As a reaction, this study seeks to restore physical disability to a more ambiguous position on the spectrum of ancient bodily perspectives, a position that is less fixed at the negative end than orthodox studies would suggest.

This portfolio of compositions and accompanying commentary explores methods of engagement with iconic works from Western Art Music as an embedded, contingent aspect of a wider contemporary Western culture. The primary aim of this portfolio was to create a set of compositions that concretely engaged with well-known works from the Western Art Music canon explicitly as works and not as quotation. Secondly, it aims to find a set of methods for treating these historical works that not only engages with their materiality, but also with aspects of cultural association and reception that have accrued around them. To these ends, the portfolio draws on historical approaches to the application of Critical Theory in other artistic disciplines such as theatre and the visual arts. These approaches, which are discussed and critiqued within the opening methodological section of the commentary, form a set of frameworks that provided stimulation for the compositions that are presented in the portfolio. The portfolio of compositions, and their discussion within the commentary, are presented in the chronological order of their creation. This thesis, therefore, provides a selection of snapshots in time that reflect an on-going and dynamic process of composition, performance and critical reflection, whereby reflection on the approaches applied to one work feed directly and indirectly into the composition of the next. The portfolio and accompanying commentary thereby blends narrative account with systematic inquiry.

This thesis looks at two disparate problems relating to Schottky groups, and in particular what it means for a Schottky group to be classical or non-classical. The first problem focusses ofl the uniformization of R.iemann surfaces using Schottky groups. We extend the retrosection theorem of Koebe by giving conditions on lengths of curves as to when a Riemann surface can be uniformized by a classical Schottky group. The second section of this thesis examines a paper of Yamamoto ([40]), which gives the first example of a non-classical Schottky group. We firstly expand on the detail given in the paper, and then use this to give a second example of a non-classical Schottky group. We then take tIns second example and generalise to a two-variable family of non-classical Schottky groups.

This study begins by defining epic to determine if Byron's claims, regarding Don Juan,to be writing an epic, are justified, concluding that though most epics preserve the form ofearlier epics, substituting a different "message" or heroic ethos, Byron, in defiance of thistradition, attempts to preserve the essence of Homeric epic, particularly its new heroicethos, but in a new form. This is where Byron and Vergil's imitations of Homer differ,Byron rejecting both Vergil's manner of imitation and his heroic ethos. In a series ofimitations, Byron parodies Vergil, borrowing his imagery to suggest the unnatural and thesterile. Differences are exposed in their respective treatments of war, Byron advocatingthe self-justifying act of love rather than the consolations of duty and fame offered byVergil, which rely on a perception of cosmic order lacking in Byron's view, a view whichlinks him to Homer and the Attic tragedians. The Greek view of the darkness andconfusion of the cosmos Byron finds congenial, appreciating the opportunities it affordsfor open-endedness, though aware that this open-endedness is always subsumed by largerclosure due to different levels of perspective (actors, chorus, and gods). In ChildeHarold's Pilgrimage, Byron attempts to emulate this multilevelledness as a means todistance himself from the cycles of Nature from which he is painfully excluded due to hismixed body and spirit nature, finally breaking out to channel these cycles of Natureproductively through art. In Byron's dramas, too, there are cycles of evil whose origins liein Attic tragedy. Ever present in Byron, as in classical tragedy, is the Promethean dilemmabetween submission, and defiance leading to inevitable defeat. In his later poetry, Byronis more reconciled to the cycles of life, though continuing his Promethean quest in thefields of love and literature.

This study is a comparative analysis of the warfare traditions of classical China and Classical Greece. The first part of this study is designed to provide a framework for understanding how certain characteristics of a society's military tradition arise, and in particular, why certain aspects of the military traditions of classical China and classical Greece are dissimilar while other aspects are similar. Specifically, chapter two demonstrates that the particular socio-political situation of a given state sets constraints upon the way that state can mobilize, organize, and employ a military force, and shows that intensive militant competition places a market incentive on a state to innovate and to select the most efficient defensive action options from the feasible set of possibilities. The third chapter suggests that the major differences in warfare character between classical Greece and China stem from the robust differences in the socio-political situations of the two societies. The methodological approach for the second part, chapters four and five, is simple comparative analysis. Chapter four examines organizational differences of classical Greek and Chinese warfare specifically differences related to armaments, force structures, and command and control elements. The subsequent chapter five examines the main differences relating to classical Greek and Chinese operational concepts.

Classical planning problems consist of an environment in a predefined state; a set of deterministic actions that, under certain conditions, change the state of the environment; and a set of goal conditions. A solution to a classical planning problem is a sequence of actions that leads from the initial state to a state satisfying the problem’s goal conditions. There are many methods for finding solutions to classical planning problems, and a popular technique is to exploit structures that commonly occur. One such structure, apparent in many planning domains, is a breakdown of the problem into multiple agents. However, methods for finding and exploiting multiagent structures are not prevalent in the literature and are currently not competitive. This thesis sets out to rectify this problem. Its first main contribution, is to introduce a domain independent algorithm for extracting multiagent structure from classical planning problems. The algorithm relies on identifying a generalisable property of agents in planning; namely, that agents are entities with an internal state, a part of the planning problem that, under a certain distribution of actions, only they can modify. Once this is appropriately formalised, the decomposition algorithm is introduced and is shown to produce identifiably multiagent decompositions over all of the classical planning domains used in the International Planning Competitions, even finding more detailed decompositions than are used by humans in certain cases. Solving multiagent planning problems can be challenging because a solution may require complex inter-agent coordination. The second main contribution of the thesis is a heuristic planning algorithm that effectively exploits the structure of decomposed domains. The algorithm transforms the coordination problem into a process of subgoal generation that can be solved efficiently under a well-known relaxation in planning. The generated subgoals guide the search so that it is always performed by one single-agent subproblem at a time. The algorithm is evaluated and shown to greatly outperform current state-of-the-art planners over decomposable domains. The thesis also includes discussion of the possible extensions of this work, to include the multiagent concepts of self-interested agents and concurrent actions. Results from the multiagent planning literature are improved upon and a new solution concept is presented that accounts for the ‘farsightedness’ inherent in planning. A method is then presented that can find stable solutions for a certain class of multiagent planning problems. A new method is introduced for modelling concurrent actions that allows them to be written without requiring knowledge of each other agent in the domain, and it is shown how such problems can be solved by a translation to single-agent planning.

This manuscript is devoted to classical mechanics and quantum mechanics, especially in the presence of magnetic field. In classical mechanics, we use Hamiltonian dynamics to describe the motion of a charged particle in a domain affected by the magnetic field. We are interested in two classical physical problems: the confinement and the scattering problem. In the quantum case, we study the spectral problem of the magnetic Laplacian at the semi-classical level, in two-dimensional domains: on a compact Riemmanian manifold with boundary and on ℝ ². Under the assumption that the magnetic field has a unique positive and non-degenerate minimum, we can describe the eigenfunctions by WKB methods. Thanks to the spectral theorem, we estimated efficiently the true eigenfunctions and the approximate eigenfunctions locally near the minimum point of the magnetic field. On ℝ ², with the additional assumption that the magnetic field is radially symmetric, we can show that the eigenfunctions of the magnetic Laplacian decay exponentially at infinity and at a rate controlled by the phase function created in WKB procedure. Furthermore, the eigenfunctions are very well approximated in an exponentially weighted space

"Who controls the past [...] controls the future: who controls the present controls the past". In the first century BCE Diodorus of Sicily described a corner of the British Isles he called Belerion and drew attention to the ingenious way the inhabitants extracted tin and the civilised manner they had acquired through trading that metal. In 2012 a tourist may stay in a bed and breakfast near Penzance or buy books from a shop named after that promontory. However, during the nineteenth century a debate amongst historians arose as to the meaning of Diodorus' Greek text, its relationship to other classical texts and the status of Cornwall in antiquity. The discussion involved at least ten treatments specifically of the topic in Cornwall alone and was incorporated into a variety of other narratives. The debate offers an unusual insight into the role of classical texts in the description and understanding of local identity. This thesis looks at passages from the classical world that have been linked to Cornwall and which often have very little academic scholarship relating to them, and examines how they have been interpreted by Cornish historians. It will show how, despite the inconclusiveness of the ancient material, a connection between Cornwall and Greek and Roman traders has been constructed by Cornish writers, and why they were interested in doing so. This thesis suggests that the political and social contexts of local historiographers has actively shaped the interpretations of the texts often assigning a meaning to classical texts that allows a narrative of independence, cultural sophistication and unbroken mining innovation to be constructed concerning Cornwall. As such this thesis will form part of a rapidly expanding inter-disciplinary interest in our understanding of responses to the Classics and to our conception of the formation of regional historical narrative.

Cellular responses to viral infection and non-self tissues depend on presentation of antigenic peptides by polymorphic MHC class I molecules. The regulatory mechanisms controlling MHC class I expression are fundamental to effective immune responses, and in the pig are not fully understood. In this study the cellular responses of SLA class I genes to cytokines were studied by measuring SLA class 1 expression at the cell surface and also by fusing the promoters of the classical genes SLA-1, -2 and -3 and non-classical genes SLA 6 and -7 independently to a luciferase reporter gene. Cell surface expression of SLA class I was measured on Max cells, Shimozuma cells and porcine aortic endothelial cells isolated from inbred pigs of the d/d haplotype and outbred pigs of an unknown haplotype. IFN-alpha and -gamma treatment increased SLA class I expression on d/d PAECs and Max cells but not on outbred PAECs or Shimozuma cells. Analysis of SLA class I promoter activity in Max cells showed constitutive activity of SLA-1, -2, -3, -6, -7 and MIC-2 promoters. In summary, classical SLA promoters were responsive to IFNs and co-expression of the transcription factors IRF-1, NF- KB p65 and CIITA. In contrast to their human counterparts, combined treatment with TNF-alpha and IFN-alpha/-gamma had no synergistic effect on classical SLA class I promoter activity. SLA-1 responded to TNF-alpha and co-expression of the transcription factors IRF-3, -7 and -9. Non-classical promoters were not induced by IFN-alpha or -gamma or CIITA. SLA-7 was responsive to TNF-alpha and co-expression of IRF-1 but not co-expression of NF-kappaB. Interestingly, basal expression of MIC-2 remained unaffected by cytokines or co-expression of transcription factors. These results suggest locus-specific responses of SLA class I genes to cytokines and transcription factors, which can be explained in part by sequence variation in three key SLA class I promoter motifs: ISRE, Enhancer A and SXY. Furthermore, this study has demonstrated that the porcine virus CSFV decreases SLA class I surface expression early during infection and that this effect correlates to decreased constitutive activity of SLA-1, -2 and -7 promoters.

About three years ago I started developing a project from Classical to Flamenco music with the clarinet as the main voice. There is a mix of music with basically two styles in the project in a concert form. I approached a new style that was not mine, and with some work of exploration I have been learning how to play and connect with it from a classical perspective into the flamenco style and tradition. This work is based on research of the tradition. I have been exploring the history of this art to understand how it has evolved and the main characteristics. After this, I looked for classical musicians who started to learn flamenco and got some inspiration for my project. The last part is the action phase, where I started to make the project real and what the process looked like. This thesis is concerned with the classical and semi-classical behaviour of solitons in three dimensions. In Chapter 2 we consider the zero mode quantization of the minimal energy Skyrmions for nucleon numbers between four and nine and also the conjectured solution with nucleon number of seventeen. The method relies on determining the contractibility of the loops in the configuration space corresponding to the discrete symmetry of the minimal energy solution. We find that for nucleon numbers four, six and eight the ground states obtained agree with the observed quantum numbers of the ground states of Helium, Lithium and Beryllium. But for nucleon numbers five, seven, nine and seventeen the spins obtained conflict with the observed isodoublet nuclear states. In Chapter 3 we discuss the gradient flow curves for two well-separated Skyrmions. The form of the equations are quite simple and lead to an unambiguous interpretation of how the solution curves behave. There exists a large number of symmetries which enable us to find the solutions in closed form in the case of massless pions. An algorithm is described that estimates the positions and relative orientation of two-separated Skyrmions, given the numerically generated Skyrme field. Chapters 4 and 5 are concerned with monopoles in SU(3) gauge theory. In Chapter 4 we consider charge two monopoles in the minimally broken case. A certain class of solutions looks like SU(2) monopoles embedded in SU(3) with a transition region or "cloud" surrounding the monopoles. We solve for the long-range fields in this region, confirming the existence of the cloud. The moduli space metric found by Dancer, is expressed in an explicit form. Chapter 5 discusses the case of maximal symmetry breaking for SU(3) monopoles for magnetic charge (2,1). Some properties of this space are discussed, we also find the axially symmetric geodesic submanifold of the moduli space and study the case of monopole scattering there. We analyse the limit where minimal symmetry breaking occurs, comparing to the results in Chapter 4.

This dissertation looks at the nature, role, use and evolution of contracts in classical Athens, the legal provisions relating to their use and the remedies, both formal and informal in the case of non-compliance. It begins by examining and evaluating the evidence available to support the study. Chapter 2 then establishes that the concept of contractual agreements was known to the Athenians and used in a variety of fields. Via a comparison with other legal systems and the use of oratory it identifies the key criteria that define an Athenian view of a contract. In Chapter 3, the laws relating to contracts and their operation are drawn together: we note the absence of caveats and prescription, and the special procedures for maritime contracts. An examination of the language and structure of contracts (Chapter 4) reveals a lack of technical language and a high degree of convergence between contracts for differing purposes, concluding that contracts were normal in every day life. Chapter 5 looks at the capacity of individuals to enter contracts, the differences between theory and practice and whether the modem concept of agency operated in practice in such circumstances, even if not defined as such by the Athenians themselves. The evolution of written contracts and the reasons for using written or unwritten contracts are examined in Chapter 6, Chapter 7 discussing the security and storage needs of written documents. The final chapter (8) examines sanctions for breach of contract. These encompass the standard legal methods and informal sanctions which require no recourse to law: the latter act as forces for compliance, drawing on the bonds that bind together 'closed' societies whose trading existence depends on a high degree of trust and integrity. The thesis concludes by drawing together the findings and suggesting areas for further study.

Based on the superposition principle, any two states of a quantum system may be coherently superposed to yield a novel state. Such a simple construction is at the heart of genuinely quantum phenomena such as interference of massive particles or quantum entanglement. Yet, these superpositions are susceptible to environmental influences, eventually leading to a complete disappearance of the system's quantum character. In principle, two distinct mechanisms responsible for this process of decoherence may be identified. In a classical decoherence setting, on the one hand, stochastic fluctuations of classical, ambient fields are the relevant source. This approach leads to a formulation in terms of stochastic Hamiltonians; the dynamics is unitary, yet stochastic. In a quantum decoherence scenario, on the other hand, the system is described in the language of open quantum systems. Here, the environmental degrees of freedom are to be treated quantum mechanically, too. The loss of coherence is then a direct consequence of growing correlations between system and environment. The purpose of the present thesis is to clarify the distinction between classical and quantum decoherence. It is known that there exist decoherence processes that are not reconcilable with the classical approach. We deem it desirable to have a simple, feasible model at hand of which it is known that it cannot be understood in terms of fluctuating fields. Indeed, we find such an example of true quantum decoherence. The calculation of the norm distance to the convex set of classical dynamics allows for a quantitative assessment of the results. In order to incorporate genuine irreversibility, we extend the original toy model by an additional bath. Here, the fragility of the true quantum nature of the dynamics under increasing coupling strength is evident. The geometric character of our findings offers remarkable insights into the geometry of the set of non-classical decoherence maps. We give a very intuitive geometrical measure---a volume---for the quantumness of dynamics. This enables us to identify the decoherence process of maximum quantumness, that is, having maximal distance to the convex set of dynamics consistent with the stochastic, classical approach. In addition, we observe a distinct correlation between the decoherence potential of a given dynamics and its achievable quantumness. In a last step, we study the notion of quantum decoherence in the context of a bipartite system which couples locally to the subsystems' respective environments. A simple argument shows that in the case of a separable environment the resulting dynamics is of classical nature. Based on a realistic experiment, we analyze the impact of entanglement between the local environments on the nature of the dynamics. Interestingly, despite the variety of entangled environmental states scrutinized, no single instance of true quantum decoherence is encountered. In part, the identification of the classical nature relies on numerical schemes. However, for a large class of dynamics, we are able to exclude analytically the true quantum nature.

In this paper I wish to trace some connections between Donald Davidson's work (1917-2003) and two major representatives of the classical pragmatist movement: Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) and William James (1842-1910). I will start with a basic characterization of classical pragmatism; then, I shall examine certain conceptions in Peirce's and James' pragmatism, in order to establish affinities with Davidson´s thought. Finally, and bearing in mind the previous con-nections, I will reflect briefly on the relevance –often unrecognized- of classical pragmatist ideas in the context of contemporary philosophi-cal discussions.

Durability, Utility and Beauty are the three Vitruvian principles of architecture. They are also my belief of what constitutes architecture. In order to pursue the essence of architecture, I hope to find at least in part an answer through the study of classical buildings that adhere to those principles. Classical architecture is often organized through basic geometric elements such as square, circle and triangle. These geometric elements have endured the history of architecture and suggest being applicable to any contemporary building. Since ancient time, humans had intimate relationships with animals, including horses. Even today, where the utility of the horse is no longer important, people still love to engage with horses on many levels. From this perspective, a horse is in a way a symbol that syncretize ancient and modern times. A horse stable offers itself as a great example to study the relationship between man and horse. As a site, Blacksburg, a small town with a significant animal research branch of the university has rich pasture resources. The proposed architecture seeks to recognize the long-standing horse culture in classical terms, a very usable and beautiful ensemble, based on strong principal geometric elements.

This thesis is concerned with the derivation of similarity solutions for one-dimensional coupled systems of reaction - diffusion equations, a semi-linear system and a one-dimensional tripled system. The first area of research in this thesis involves a coupled system of diffusion equations for the existence of two distinct families of diffusion paths. Constructing one-parameter transformation groups preserving the invariance of this system of equations enables similarity solutions for this coupled system to be derived via the classical and non-classical procedures. This system of equation is the uncoupled in the hope of recovering further similarity solutions for the system. Once again, one-parameter groups leaving the uncoupled system invariant are obtained, enabling similarity solutions for the system to be elicited. A one-dimensional pattern formation in a model of burning forms the next component of this thesis. The primary focus of this area is the determination of similarity solutions for this reaction - diffusion system by means of one-parameter transformation group methods. Consequently, similarity solutions which are a generalisation of the solutions of the one-dimensional steady equations derived by Forbes are deduced. Attention in this thesis is then directed toward a semi-linear coupled system representing a predator - prey relationship. Two approaches to solving this system are made using the classical procedure, leading to one-parameter transformation groups which are instrumental in elicting the general similarity solution for this system. A triple system of equations representing a one-dimensional case of diffusion in the presence of three diffusion paths constitutes the next theme of this thesis. In association with the classical and non-classical procedures, the derivation of one-parameter transformation groups leaving this system invariant enables similarity solutions for this system to be deduced. The final strand of this thesis involves a one- dimensional case of the general linear system of coupled diffusion equations with cross-effects for which one-parameter transformation group methods are once more employed. The one-parameter groups constructed for this system prove instrumental in enabling the attainment of similarity solutions for this system to be accomplished

Egypt in the early Byzantine period was a bilingual country where Greek and Egyptian (Coptic) were used alongside each other. Historical studies as well as linguistic studies of the phonology and lexicon of early Byzantine Greek in Egypt testify to this situation. In order to describe the linguistic traces the language-contact situation left behind in individuals' linguistic output, this thesis analyses the syntax of early Byzantine Greek texts from Egypt. The primary object of interest is bilingual interference in the syntax of verbs, adverbial phrases, discourse organising devices and formulaic sections. The thesis is based on a corpus of Greek and Coptic private letters on papyrus, all of which date from the fourth to mid-seventh centuries, originate from Egypt and belong to bilingual, Greek-Coptic, papyrus archives. The data is analysed with a particular focus on three interrelated questions: (1) What kinds of deviations from the standard pattern appear and to what extent can language-internal confusion account for them? (2) How are instances of language-internal confusion and bilingual interference distributed over the selected syntactic domains? (3) Do deviations from the standard accumulate in certain letters or archives belonging to the corpus and do they correlate with additional indicators of bilingualism such as code-switching or circumstantial information about writers? In addition to answering these questions, the thesis seeks to explain the observed distributions. The results obtained from this study suggest that bilingual interference is linked to the way writers assimilated structures. In fact, there is a marked difference between deviating syntactic structures in non-formulaic and formulaic contexts. The study further suggests that bilingual interference does not affect every domain of syntax to the same degree. The degree of complexity of the syntactic structure in question as well as the degree of divergence from the corresponding Coptic structure seem to play a role.

Since 1916 intriguing questions have arisen from the study of Black Holes (BH). Only some of them have been resolved. Indeed, we are faced with regimes where the yet unknown interplay between quantum theory and spacetime unveils. BH physics is a gateway to the quantum nature of gravity. My thesis has been completely devoted to this central domain of theoretical physics, with the guiding aim of understanding in the widest possible manner the debate around those questions. The process has produced original results that constitute the main core of the manuscript. 1- The maximal volume surfaces of evaporating BHs are studied. An astrophysical BH will end its life with an external planckian area $10^{-70} m^2$ hiding $10^5$ times the volume of our observable Universe. This can have consequences on the viability of the “remnant scenario” as solution to the BH information paradox. 2- The “black-hole-to-white-hole scenario” is analyzed. The model is shown to be strongly unstable, and a minimal resolutive modification is proposed. 3- A generalisation of the four laws of BH thermodynamics is proven for intersecting light cones in Minkowski spacetime. 4- Conformally flat spaces where such laws acquire the standard thermodynamical interpretation are studied. The simplest one is the Bertotti-Robinson spacetime, known to encode the near-horizon geometry of a charged BH. 5- It is shown that, if the correct energy-momentum tensor is identified, the Eintein-Cartan’s field equations can be recovered as a thermodynamical equilibrium equation of state just like in the GR original case. Such results contribute to the intense debate on the opening crucial questions

The strong association of the human leukocyte antigen HLA-B27 (B27), with spondyloarthropathies (SpA), was discovered more than four decades ago, yet the role B27 plays in disease pathogenesis remains unclear. It has been demonstrated that HLA-B27 can form non-classical FHC forms, including B27 FHC homodimers (B272) and misfolded FHCs. Two leading theories of SpA pathogenesis proposed that both cell surface NC-B27 (the B27 homodimer theory) and intracellular (the B27 misfolding and UPR theory) can drive immune responses in SpA. Several studies demonstrated that cell surface NC-B27 binds to immune receptors and suggested that these interactions can activate Th17 immunity. My DPhil project focuses on the investigation of the cell surface expression of NC-B27 molecules in cells and tissues obtained from AS patients and B27 TG2 rats. I used both existing reagents and a novel HD6 antibody, generated against B272, to examine the expression of HLA-B27 by flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and immunoprecipitation. This thesis provides evidence that the expression of HD6- and HC10-reactive molecules in AS patients is rather restricted to specific cell types (e.g. osteoclasts) and possibly particular environmental factors and tissue types (e.g. synovial fluid and joint tissue). My data using B27 TG2 rats demonstrated that resident joint cells express HD6- and HC10-reactive molecules before the onset of clinical manifestations. Furthermore, I showed increased expression of NC-B27 on antigen presenting cells (APCs), and CD161+ and CD8+ cell populations in blood and secondary lymphoid organs. Based on these findings I hypothesized that cell surface expression of NC-B27 may not only be crucial for activation of Th17-driven immune responses, but may also shift the balance between immune tolerance and activation. Importantly, the expression of potentially pathogenic HD6-reactive molecules is restricted to specific cell and tissue types hence HD6 antibody may be a potential future therapeutic agent in SpA.

Persian classical guitar repertoire falls largely into two categories. The first is a collection of early works by Persian composers that reflects European compositional styles and rarely show signs of the modes and melodic gestures associated with Persian traditional repertoire (radif) or folk music. A more recent trend incorporates the sounds and spirit of Persian classical music in two distinct ways: a) pieces that apply thematic material derived from Persian music, and b) pieces inspired by the improvisational aesthetics of Persian music. The main question this thesis seeks to answer is: “How can we bring performance practices associated with classical Persian music into the delivery of modern compositions based on Persian music?” In this thesis, I draw out of the literature specific sites of agency in Persian music performance practice, including but not limited to ornamentation, melodic phrasing, various types of melodic and rhythmic variation, and intonation. Through a comparative study of recordings, I then map out the wide range of approaches to performance this agency yields and ponder how the spectrum of practices documented in this analysis might inform the delivery of five pieces written for the classical guitar: Khorasani and Nava by Mehrdad Pakbaz, Five Persian Miniatures by Dušan Bogdanović, Nam by Carlo Domeniconi, and my own composition for flute and guitar, Le Yarei. The lecture recital submitted as my major creative work presents stylisations of these compositions that draw on the findings of my performance practice analysis.

In this thesis we develop and analyse mathematical models describing phase change phenomena linked with novel technological applications. The models are based on modifications to standard phase change theory. The mathematical tools used to analyse such models include asymptotic analysis, similarity solutions, the Heat Balance Integral Method and standard numerical techniques such as finite differences. In chapters 2 and 3 we study the melting of nanoparticles. The Gibbs-Thomson relation, accounting for melting point depression, is coupled to the heat equations for the solid and liquid and the associated Stefan condition. A perturbation approach, valid for large Stefan numbers, is used to reduce the governing system of partial differential equations to a less complex one involving two ordinary differential equations. Comparison between the reduced system and the numerical solution shows good agreement. Our results reproduce interesting behaviour observed experimentally such as the abrupt melting of nanoparticles. Standard analyses of the Stefan problem impose constant physical properties, such as density or specific heat. We formulate the Stefan problem to allow for variation at the phase change and show that this can lead to significantly different melting times when compared to the standard formulation. In chapter 4 we study a mathematical model describing the solidification of supercooled liquids. For Stefan numbers larger than unity the classical Neumann solution provides an analytical expression to describe the solidification. For Stefan numbers equal or smaller than unity, the Neumann solution is no longer valid. Instead, a linear relationship between the phase change temperature and the front velocity is often used. This allows solutions for all values of the Stefan number. However, the linear relation is an approximation to a more complex, nonlinear relationship, valid for small amounts of supercooling. We look for solutions using the nonlinear relation and demonstrate the inaccuracy of the linear relation for large supercooling. Further, we show how the classical Neumann solution significantly over-predicts the solidification rate for values of the Stefan number near unity. The Stefan problem is often reduced to a 'one-phase' problem (where one of the phases is neglected) in order to simplify the analysis. When the phase change temperature is variable it has been claimed that the standard reduction loses energy. In chapters 5 and 6, we examine the one-phase reduction of the Stefan problem when the phase change temperature is time-dependent. In chapter 5 we derive a one-phase reduction of the supercooled Stefan problem, and test its performance against the solution of the two-phase model. Our model conserves energy and is based on consistent physical assumptions, unlike one-phase reductions from previous studies. In chapter 6 we study the problem from a general perspective, and identify the main erroneous assumptions of previous studies leading to one-phase reductions that do not conserve energy or, alternatively, are based on non-physical assumptions. We also provide a general one-phase model of the Stefan problem with a generic variable phase change temperature, valid for spherical, cylindrical and planar geometries.
