Повний текст джерелаThe atmosphere of a space, whether it’s a neighborhood, a street, or a simple public corner, plays a fundamental role in everyone’s daily experience. It influences our well-being, emotions, interactions, and perceptions of the surrounding environment. Urban atmospheres are much more than the sum of their architectural and functional elements. They reflect the multiple stories, cultural identities, and social dynamics interwoven in the fabric of our cities. However, these atmospheres are neither fixed nor homogeneous. They are often the battleground for complex struggles and rivalries that shape the urban environment. This thesis delves into the intriguing phenomenon of heterogeneity in atmospheres in two transforming neighborhoods of Beirut: the Syriac Quarter and Ouzaï. It also explores how residents, local actors, tourists, and newcomers engage in subtle conflicts to define, control, and influence the environment through its ambiance. The study examines how these struggles shape the materiality, aesthetics, functionality, and significance of urban spaces, and in turn, how these spaces impact the battles of atmospheres. But how can one approach such complexity? This research relies on a methodological protocol that combines the method of itineraries and “windowology”. Narratives provide privileged access to individuals’ perceptions and experiences, while “windowology” allows us to delve into the visual aspect of urban spaces, exploring windows as silent witnesses to these struggles. The four main facets, outcomes of this research: the struggle for the preservation of sociocultural identity, the struggle for control of public space, the struggle for influence and representation, and the struggle for access to daily needs help understand the dynamics at play and envision more tailored urban policies

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis reconstitutes the ottoman millat system through research on the archives of the greek-orthodox community of beirut. It apprehends the constituting elements of the millat : individuals, families, professions, living standards and residential areas. Far more important was the analysis of the organizing structure, the majlis al millat. The internal structure and the various insitutions of the millat were identified, its functions understood. Four phases were identified. The first one covers the 1860s and corresponds to the edits of the tanzimat which required the installation of a lay administration. The second phase is a period of internal re-adjustment and development. In 1888, when the wilayat of beirut was created, the community was headed by a powerful economic elite which reinforced its networks and consolidated its power. The french mandate period was one of decline characterized by deep social transformations, a weak elite, a lack of concern which lead to the marginalization of the community in the city and in the new lebanese state

Повний текст джерелаThis dissertation offers a glimpse into early 20th century Beirut’s musical life by unveiling the type of music that prevailed at the time, the famous singers, the places of singing. It follows the ways in which the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the arrival of the French mandate changed and affected entertainment and leisure in Beirut, by focusing on its evolving musical scene, as it manifested in changing places of consumption, sociality and the distribution of music as a new form of commodity. It does that by studying expert, lay and intellectual debates on music and music criticism in this period, as they emerged in in the press. Moreover, this dissertation looks at how new developments in technologies affected music at the beginning of the 20th century by focusing on how the evolution of the record industry imposed and produced new forms of expressions, of music, and new places of entertainment. A reading of how the social and political transformations in early 20th century Beirut affected and created new forms of entertainment, leisure, musical expressions and commodities allows us to understand the role of music in making a national identity and discourse in the newly established State of Greater Lebanon

Повний текст джерелаThe "Hawch" is an inherited element in Beirut urban planning. It is a dense grouping of traditional habitat, surrounded by an enclosure wall and accessible from a "Zoukak" –a narrow service street-. It contains in its interior a community life identical to that of Lebanese society around a structuring green space. By its peripheral location to Beirut's Downtown that's being rebuilt, the “Hawch” is subject to stress conditions. The first is an external pressure: first, in an economic order that is due to land and property speculation, the second in terms of urban densification and sprawl. The second is an internal tension coming first by the community fallback presented by its inner society facing Beirut's trend towards individualization and Westernization and secondly the "competence of the owner" to modify the space at the expense of the "Hawch"'s ecological microclimate balance. The "Hawch" comes as a response to the discourse on today's urban policy. Three intrinsic components: social, spatial and environmental landscape corresponding to the three sustainable development pillars meet the challenges of the modern city of Beirut. The potentialities of living together in the social dimension, urban spatial ecology of the spatial dimension and the environmental dimension microclimate as landscape predisposes it to persist in the contemporary city of Beirut as "Hawch" Revisited that we call the "Neo-Hawch "

Повний текст джерелаThis present thesis discusses the formation of the orientation project of young high school students in Lebanon, and its future for the Lebanese adults expatriates in Paris. Our primary question is how the orientation project has evolved from the young age into adulthood? Two surveys has been conducted. The first relates to the representations done by the young high school seniors, concerning the influence of social learning on the elaboration of their orientation project. The social learning takes place in two social contexts: the family and the school. This learning is divided into two types: the first is instrumental, that includes the mastering of a scholar subject and the practice of a cultural activity. The second is associative, composed of the imitation of a professional and the identification of a prestigious profession. This is a quantitative survey which allow us to show the representations of the young students according to their belonging to one or the other social groups, such as gender, types of school public/private, the followed branch scientific/literature, the socio-professional origin and the level of success. The second survey is qualitative, it concerns a sample of twelve Lebanese adult expatriates in Paris that were old senior high school students in Lebanon, it is a complimentary survey to the first one. This second surveys’ objective is to provide, from the evocation of the adults surveyed, a meaning to the process of formation and evolution with the advancing age. The data analysis of the survey was approached through a thematic analysis which determine the themes of analysis in relation with the hypothesis concerning the second survey. A singular vertical analysis is preliminary to a second horizontal analysis, which allow us to cross-reading the entire interviews conducted with the adults surveyed
Traboulsi, Fawwaz. "Identités et solidarités croisées dans les conflits du Liban contemporain." Paris 8, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA080847.
Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this thesis is to study the effects of two forms of identification and solidarity, the sects and the classes, in the conflicts of contemporary lebanon. Succeeding to a section on methodology dealing with the concepts of sect, clientelism and class, is one which traces the emergence of the sectarian phenomenon, the formative phases of the lebanese entity and the ascent to power of the commercial-financial oligarchy. A chapter is devoted to the thought of michel chiha (1891-1954), leading ideologue of free trade and secterianism, another deals with the problematic of the state submitted to the "double bind" of sect and class, a third analyses the social crisis and the social movements on the eve of the war. The third and last section on the civil war analyses the projects of society of the protagonists, the "mafian" features of militian power and concludes with a survey of the mecanisms and rituals of violence. The conclusion, which highlights the explosive factor of class frustations imbedded in sectarian politics, poses a number of questions and challenges facing the process of peace, reconstruction, democracy and secularism in post-war lebanon

Повний текст джерелаThe objective of this study is to develop a smart framework for post-disaster reconstruction of buildings, with a focus on the Beirut explosion as a case study, due to its complex geopolitical context, extensive damage, and socio-economic crises. The study delves into various dimensions encompassing physical, economic, and social to prioritize marginalized community groups in the recovery efforts and advocate for the “Build-Back-Better approach”, according to the recommendations of « Sendai Framework For Disaster Risk Reduction ».To attain these objectives, the thesis starts with a literature review (Chapter 1) to identify research gaps and existing post-disaster reconstruction frameworks. Drawing from this review, a research methodology is formulated to address these gaps with emphasis on Beirut city in Lebanon (Chapter 2). It includes the local context study, the data analysis methods, and an understanding of the challenges facing the post-disaster reconstruction with a focus on Beirut. A comprehensive framework for assessing post-disaster buildings in Beirut following the explosion is developed (Chapter 3), comprising 12 indicators spanning physical attributes of the building and socio-economic profile of its residents. This framework facilitates the calculation of a Priority Index for a large set of damaged buildings in Beirut (Chapter 4). The assessment assists decision-makers and stakeholders involved in the reconstruction process manage and monitor building renovation projects while encouraging the affected community engagement. It prioritizes the most vulnerable individuals, thereby fostering a people-centric approach to recovery, underpinned by the principles of building-back-better and inclusivity. The data-based framework and results presented in this thesis form a step forward in the post-disaster reconstruction field. However, this research shows some limitations including the data collection via crowdsourcing and the lack of people participation, the dynamics and the complexity of the post-disaster context, and the focus on the building sector only. Future research could focus on (i) considering all the sectors affected by the disaster, (ii) investigating the social acceptance for participating in the data collection process, (iii) and diversifying the data collection sources
