Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) commonly used as plasticizer enters into aquatic environment from the industries manufacturing plastic products, PVC resins, cosmetics and many other commercial products. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the acute toxicity effects of Dioctyl phthalate on fresh water fish Clarias batrachus. The 96 hour LC50 of Dioctyl phthalate in Clarias batrachus was estimated as 14.5ml/L. Histopathological changes in liver of Clarias batrachus were determined by exposing them to a fraction of LC50(1/5th) dose with every change of water for 30 days. The liver of Clarias batrachus was excised at every interval of 30 days and histological changes of liver were studied under light microscopy. Liver tissues showed abnormalities. Centrilobular vacuolation, necrosis, eccentric nuclei and enlarged nuclei, Centrilobular degeneration of hepatocytes were observed in liver tissue of fish.

AbstractCannibalism is an important characteristic of African catfish that significantly reduces the number of stocked fish at harvest. This study evaluates the effect of reciprocal hybridization of Clarias batrachus and Clarias gariepinus on cannibalism and growth performance of their progenies in an indoor rearing system. The result obtained reveals excellent performance of hybrids of C. gariepinus ♂ and C. batrachus ♀ over the purebreds in terms of growth. However, the reciprocal hybrids between C. gariepinus ♀ and C. batrachus ♂ all died few hours after hatching. Cannibalism was significantly reduced in the crosses between C. gariepinus ♂ and C. batrachus ♀ with 100% survival after five months of culture. Hence, this could be exploited in commercial production of catfish to reduce cannibalism and increase harvest size of fish farmers.

Catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil contain the highest amount of omega-3-PUFA among other freshwater fish. The omega-3-PUFA in fish oil produced eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is known that EPA and DHA in essentials fatty acid (EFA) could improve BMP-2 expression. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is bone stimulator which capable of inducing differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblast, stimulating bone formation in wound healing process of dental extraction. Purpose: To prove the increasing expression of BMP-2 after catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil application. Methods: We have used the post test only design in this research. There have been 21 Rattus novergicus as research samples, and those were divided into 3 groups, group KK as control, group KP1 was given catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil in 5% concentration, and group KP2 was given catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil in 10% concentration. Catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil were applied into the socket of dental extraction. Rat was decapulated 7 days after fish oil application and the jaw in the treated regions and control group were cut for immunohistochemistry examination to observe BMP-2 expression. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA test. Result: There is significant difference increased of BMP-2 expression between control and treatment group. In samples given with 10% concentration of catfish oil had the most significant increase of BMP-2 expression. Conclusion: Catfish (Clarias batrachus) oil in 10% concentration could increase the expression of BMP-2 post dental extraction.Key words: Catfish oil, BMP-2, dental extraction.

Acephate is an insecticide made up of organophosphates. It is applied to food crops, citrus trees, on golf courses, in commercial or institutional buildings, and as a seed treatment. Products containing acephate can be purchased as tablets, liquids, granules, powders, and water-soluble packs. Acephate 75% brand name-Asataf insecticide manufactured by TATA RALLIS was used for the test. The solvent used was glass double distilled (g.d.d.) water. Fresh water catfish Clarias batrachus were collected from local water bodies of Cuttack district. All the fishes were acclimatized for fifteen days in laboratory aquaria containing 30L dechlorinated tap water prior to the initiation of the experiment. The peripheral blood smear slides were prepared from the blood collected by caudal incision in accordance with Al-Sabti (1986) and Das and Nanda (1986) with some modifications which were prepared animals were sacrificed after 24, 48 and 72 hours of Exposure and were used for each treatment group in both types of administrations (IP and dermal). The increased concentration of acephate directly affects our biological fish sample i.e. Clarias batrachus. Acephate is causing serious problems in fish as per our genotoxicity study of acephate on Clarias batrachus. Clarias batrachus is a commonly found fish species in fresh water habitat which includes ponds, ditches, wetlands and rice fields of India specially in Odisha. The irrational use of pesticides containing acephate in agriculture cause harmful effects on Clarias batrachus, which is a most important species of fish for maintaining the aquatic diversity.

Arsenic trioxide contamination has increased due to anthropogenic activities such as urbanisation, industry, and transportation. As is contaminated by mining and mountain erosion. In this study, numerous changes were observed in the blood serum protein of catfish (Clarias batrachus) in the biochemical parameter of the fish caused by As2O3. By monitoring Clarias batrachus in As2O3 contaminated water inside the allotted period, arsenic trioxide has lowered its protein content, indicating that As2O3 decreases content of protein.

Clarias batrachus (Linn.) is widely recognized in Indian sub-continent for its nutritional and economic significance. At present, it remains at a merely vulnerable state. Pathogenic infections, diminution of natural habitats and introduction of allied exotic fishes are the causes of productivity constraint, particularly in Southern Asia. Conversely, African cat fish Clarias gariepinus has been significantly identified as a potential threat to biodiversity, despite being its large scale cultivation across the world. Thus emphasis on indigenous C. batrachus farming is becoming inevitable. Currently, screening of autochthonous probiotic organisms for the cultivation of C. batrachus in semi-intensive manner is getting importance. At the same time, molecular omics-based technologies are also gaining considerable attention to identify potential probiotic markers. This review provides an overall concept of probiotics, its application and future perspectives in relation to the cultivation of C. batrachus.

The African catfish Clarias gariepinus has been introduced for aquaculture in Bangladesh due to the scarcity of indigenous C. batrachus fingerlings. However, the government of Bangladesh has banned the farming of C. gariepinus due to the carnivorous nature of this species. Recently C. gariepinus has been reported by fish farmers and consumers in Bangladesh, and unplanned hybridization between native and exotic species has been suspected. This study attempts to know the purity of C. batrachus by analyzing mitochondrial genes. Both directly sequenced and retrieved Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb) genes from C. gareipinus and C. batrachus were analyzed by MEGA software. The morphologically dissimilar C. batrachus showed the least genetic distance (0.295) from C. gariepinus, which provided evidence of hybridization between the two species. Maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees showed that C. batrachus from Bangladesh did not cluster with C. batrachus of other countries, instead C. batrachus clustered with the exotic C. gariepinus. The suspected hybrid formed sister taxa with the exotic C. gariepinus. The study corroborates the genetic deterioration of C. batrachus by unplanned hybridization with the invasive C. gariepinus. Unplanned hybridization has deleterious consequences; therefore, immediate action is necessary for aquaculture sustainability and biodiversity conservation in Bangladesh.

We have cloned and characterized two highly reiterated, tandemly repeated, and A + T rich MboI DNA fragments, one in Cirrhina mrigala (Cyprinidae), with a monomer size of 266 bp, and one in Clarias batrachus (Clariidae), with a monomer size of 227 bp. The MboI fragment in C. mrigala is species-specific and absent in other carps, such as Catla catla and Labeo rohita. The MboI fragment in C. batrachus was also present in two other catfishes tested, namely Clarias gariepinus and Heteropneustes fossilis. In C. mrigala xC. catla and C. mrigala x L. rohita hybrids, the C. mrigala specific MboI fragment is inherited uniparentally. In the reciprocal hybrids of C. batrachus xH. fossilis, the satellite ladder contains the bands of both parental species. The MboI satellite of carp may be useful in genetic introgression analysis and that of catfish in distinguishing between gynogenetic progeny and true hybrids.

The present investigation has been conducted to evaluate the egg and sperm quality of thecatfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.) cultured in sugarcane bagasse substrate medium. Adult Clariasbatrachus (av. wt. 196 g for males and 215 g for females) were reared at 20 per tank. No feed wasprovided to the fish in 3 of the substrate-added tanks (T1), while a pelleted diet was fed to the fish inthe remaining 3 substrate-added tanks (T2) and the other 3 tanks without substrate (T3). Five pairs ofmatured male and female Clarias batrachus were bred by hypophysation using OVAPRIM. Spawningsubstrates made from cut nylon mosquito nets were spread inside the tank to a depth of 10cm for thepurpose of incubation. Fertilized eggs obtained by mixing stripped eggs and spermatozoa fromOvaprim-induced brood fish were immediately spread thinly on the substrate for between 24-36hours for incubation and hatching. The brood fish fed the fishmeal-based diet and diet with sugarcanebagasse substrate had significantly higher (p<0.05) oocyte diameter, milt density, milt volume, sperm motility, higher percentage of egg fertilization, hatching and crude protein and lipid contents. These results showed that sugarcane bagasse can effectively be use as a substrate for the culture ofthe catfish Clarias batrachus.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the comparative capability of producing infections and causing mortality of the experimental Magur (Clarias batrachus) with motile Aeromonas species. A total of 200 apparently healthy C. batrachus were acclimatized to the laboratory conditions for experimental study. Nine different groups (each group consisting of 20 fish) of healthy C. batrachus was injected with nine motile Aeromonas isolates (A. hydrophila-3, A. sobria-3 and A. caviae-3). Experimental C. batrachus were infected with motile A. hydrophila, A. sobria and A. caviae to groups 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9, respectively while group 10 was injected with sterile physiological saline (0.85% NaCl) and served as the control. The selected motile bacterial species via intramuscularly were injected at the rate of 4.5 × 105 cfu/fish for pathogenicity study on C. batrachus and monitored up to two weeks. The highest clinical infections were noticed 90% in group-3 whereas only 35% in group-8 within the experimental period. After two weeks of the experiment, the cumulative mortality rate was also found highest (60%) in group-3 but lowest (15%) in group-9 while no infection or mortality showed in group-10 (control group). The development of infection and mortality to the injected C. batrachus was associated more severely by Aeromonas hydrophila than A. sobria and A. caviae used in this study. However, the isolates motile Aeromonas species could serve as the primary cause of skin lesions as well as mortality in cultured C. batrachus. Asian Australas. J. Food Saf. Secur. 2017, 1 (1), 45-50

Clarias batrachus is a commercially important food fish. In the present study, effect of varying dietary protein levels was evaluated on the survival, growth parameters and proximate composition of C. batrachus. Diets comprising 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% crude protein (CP) were supplied to fish in T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6, respectively, at the rate of 5% of fish body weight for the entire 90 days, twice daily. Size of each stocked C. batrachus was recorded after 15 days. Results revealed 100% survival rate of C. batrachus in all treatments. Significantly highest (P<0.001) mean value of weight gain (g/fish), percent weight gain, daily growth rate, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio (PER) in C. batrachus were recorded, reared in T4 by feeding 40% CP in diet. The best FCR value (1.90±0.02) for C. batrachus was obtained in T4 by feeding 40%CP in diet. Mean value of water, ash, fat and protein contents (wet mass) were ranged 74.10–79.23%, 3.12–4.68%, 3.90–4.43% and 13.09–16.79% for C. batrachus in the studied treatment groups. Water content (%) was found significantly (P<0.05) higher in the body of C. batrachus for T1, T2, T3 and T6 than for T4 and T5. Ash was found significantly (P<0.05) higher in the fish reared in T4 and T5. Fat content in the wet body mass of C. batrachus was found significantly higher in T4 and T1. While, significant higher (P<0.05) values of mean protein content was noted in C. batrachus reared in T4 and T5. Body composition of C. batrachus was also categorically affected by body size, however, condition factor showed non-significant correlation in most of the relationships in the present study. Overall, results indicated that feeding appropriate diet (containing 40% CP) to the fish resulted good growth performance, lower FCR and higher protein content in the fish. Present study provides valuable knowledge of optimal dietary protein level in C. batrachus which will help in commercial success of aquaculture.

Cortisol is a major hormone directly associated with stress in fish and is a reliable physiological indicator of primary stress response in fish, whereas glucose and osmolality are the indicators of secondary stress response in fish. This study explored the stress levels in the catfish, Clarias batrachus (Magur) by measuring the cortisol, glucose, and osmolality levels in plasma by exposing the fish to three different kinds of interventions namely, non-anaesthetized, anaesthetized, and stressed. No statistically significant changes were reported in the plasma cortisol, plasma glucose, and plasma osmolality levels when the blood samples were collected after the three interventions. These results indicated that Clarias batrachus is a sturdy fish, which can withstand routine laboratory handling, and that the blood samples can be collected without anaesthetization.

The walking catfish (Clarias batrachus Linnaeus, 1758) is an omnivorous bottom feeder, incorporating various food sources in its diet, such as insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, and vegetable matter. It is primarily nocturnal. However, it can adapt to pond conditions and readily switch to a more carnivorous diet. During observation, the main focus is to examine the morphometric relationship of Clarias batrachus for that total ten morphometric characters were measured for each specimen. Notably, a linear relationship was observed between the total length and other morphometric characters. The results highlight a strong correlation between most morphometric parameters and the total length of the catfish. However, it was found that the anal length does not show a significant correlation with the total length.

Increased production of aquacultured freshwater fish, such as Pangasius pangasius, Oreochromis niloticus, and Clarias batrachus, wich have low commercial value as potential alternative raw materials for surimi. This study aimed to determine the sensory characteristics of chikuwa produced using different raw materials of surimi and increase the diversity of processed fishery products that are highly nutritious with recommended physical quality. This research used the randomized block design (RBD) method with three repetitions. The treatment used were the difference in raw materials of surimi, P1 (Pangasius pangasius), P2 (Oreochromis niloticus) and P3 (Clarias batrachus). Parameters in this research included physical analysis of surimi (gel strength), chemical analysis of surimi (protein content and moisture content), and chikuwa sensory analysis. The results showed that Pangasius pangasius had a significant effect on surimi gel strength, surimi protein content and surimi water content, but had no significant effect on Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias batrachus. Based on the chemical analysis results, all raw materials for surimi have met the standard of SNI 01-2694-2013 except for Pangasius pangasius surimi protein (11,94%). Different raw materials of surimi had a significant effect on the appearance, taste, color, and texture of the organoleptic test. However, it had no significant effect on the chikuwa aroma parameters. Chikuwa (P1) produced the best characteristics from an organoleptic.

Different parts of plant have been used since many decades by humans for catching fishes. In this investigation, ‘ketuke ‘leaf effect was observed on behavioral change and histological alterations in the kidney of Clarias batrachus. Few fishes were kept as control i.e. not exposed to plant piscicide. The other fishes were exposed to 3gm per 30 liters of water for 24 and 48 hrs. In exposed fish’s restlessness, vigorous movement, excessive secretion of slime and loss of appetite was seen. Histologically, glomerular contraction, clumping of melanomacrophages, degeneration of epithelial tissue along with the degeneration of renal tubules and others were seen. Increase in the Bowman’s space was one of the noticeable changes. Extract accumulation was seen in the tissues. Exposure to sub lethal concentrations of Ketuke (Agave americana), caused duration dependent histopathological alterations in the kidney of Clarias batrachus which is discussed in the paper.

A year round field investigations were conducted with the aim to examine the seasonal variation in population dynamics of helminth parasites in Clarias batrachus from different natural aquatic habitat of north-eastern region of Bangladesh, Sylhet. This article summarizes the percentage of prevalence, mean intensity, abundance and index of infestation of helminth parasites in the C. batrachus during different months and seasons of the year in accordance with temperature, humidity and rainfall. The investigation period were categorized into four seasons i.e. pre-monsoon (February-April), monsoon (May-July), post-monsoon (August- October) and winter (November- January). A total 180 C. batrachus host individuals were examined and among them 139 (67.87%) specimens were found to be infested with 2205 individuals of parasites of three different groups namely trematode, cestode and nematode. Almost (100%) prevalence of helminth infestation were recorded from both male and female C. batrachus during the winter (Nov-Jan), followed by (Feb-April) pre-monsoon (66.67-86.67%) and (Aug-Sep) post-monsoon (66.67-80.00%) while lowest (53.33-60.00%) in monsoon or rainy season (May-July). Lower range of environmental temperature (21.05–25.050C), associated with moderate humidity (62.00-64.00%) and scarcity of rainfall increases the intensity of helminthes parasitic infestation in C. batrachus. In consistent to this, with the gradual increasing in ambient temperature (28.01- 30.010C) and humidity (75.00-89.00%) associated with moderate rainfall (33.40-790.90 mm) declining the intensity of helminthes infestation in C. batrachus of the study area.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2015), 5(2) 86-89

Abstract Clarias gariepinus is an economically important fish belonging to Siluriformes. In order to understand the characterization of catfishes, the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the African catfish C. gariepinus was determined using 17 pairs of primers. The complete mitogenome is 16,508 bp in length and contains 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding, two rRNA, and 22 tRNA genes) and a control region as in most other fishes. Moreover, a comparison of C. gariepinus with Clarias batrachus, Clarias fuscus and Clarias sp. NM-2010 indicated that the four mitogenomics were similar in length, total nucleotide compositions and codon usage patterns, but different in 13 protein-coding genes, control region and other aspects. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of C. gariepinus would contribute to better understanding of population genetics, conservation, biogeography and evolution of this species.

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of three most commonly used growth promoters from different pharmaceutical companies on growth performance of hybrid walking catfish (Clarias batrachus × Clarias gariepinus). The experiment was done in the wet laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, BAU, Mymensingh, with a total of 10 aquaria and 160 fish having mean initial weight of 6.3 ± 0.48 g. The three growth promoters, “Charger gel” from Fishtech (BD) Ltd., “Growth gel” from Advance Agrotech (BD) Ltd. and “Hepaprotect-aqua” from Renata Animal health Ltd., were used in separate nine (9) aquaria at recommended, lower dose and higher dose respectively. One aquarium was used as control (diet without any growth promoter). The fish were fed with paragon nursery floating feed at 20% of body weight in each aquarium for 28 days. Doses of Charger gel were given as 80, 60 and 100 mg/20 g feed/day, that of Growth gel, 0.14, 0.12 and 0.16 ml/20 g feed/day and of Hepaprotect-aqua, 30, 15 and 50 mg/20 g feed/day. Re-circulatory system was used throughout the experimental period. By applying recommended, lower and higher dose of “Charger gel”, mean final weights were found as 23.0, 21.9 and 35.9 g; average daily weight gain as 0.60, 0.56 and 1.06 g and specific growth rate (SGR) as 2.01, 1.93 and 2.70% respectively. For “Growth gel”, mean final weights were found as 22.8, 17.3 and 31.1 g; average daily weight gain as 0.59, 0.39 and 0.88 g and SGR as 1.99, 1.57 and 2.48 % respectively. For “Hepaprotect-aqua”, mean final weights were found as 24.2, 17.5 and 28.2 g; average daily weight gain as 0.64, 0.40 and 0.78 g and SGR as 2.09, 1.58 and 2.32% respectively. In all the cases survival rates were 100%. All the three growth promoters showed better results at their higher doses in comparison to their results in lower and recommended doses. However, in average Charger gel showed the best result than the other two growth promoters. This information on the efficacy study of growth promoters needs to be disseminated to the farmers for improved fish production.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. March 2017, 3(1): 103-108

Fish samples collected from K.R. market, BAU campus came from various waterbodies. Sex, total length (cm), standard length (cm), head length (cm) and weight (g) were recorded. Five different species of caryophyllaeid namely Djombangia penetrans, Lytocestus indicus, L. birmanicus, L. parvulus and Bovienia serialis were identified from the host. Severe infestations of caryophyllaeid cestodes were found in C. batrachus. Changes in the nature of growth and loss of weight as a result of parasitic infestation were noticed. Accordingly length, weight and condition factors were found to be greatly affected. Loss of total length (8.73%) and the highest loss of mean head length (4.49%) were found in smaller infested length group fish. Loss of weight (1.63%) and the highest percentage loss of weight (26.38) were noticed in the small length group while it was 7.44 in large length group. The highest condition factor (1.13) was found in uninfested fish and lowest (0.85) in infested fish. Suggestions were made for further investigation on blood composition and gonadal development of infested host. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jasbs.v38i2.15594 J. Asiat. Soc. Aedes aegypti acts as a primary vector of the dengue virus which causes Indonesia to become a dengue-endemic country. Chemical and physical vector control methods to prevent the spread of DHF are considered less effective so that additional biological vector control is needed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential ability of catfish predation as Ae. aegypti vector controller. This paper was prepared by reviewing eight Indonesian research journals, eight international research journals, reports and regulations of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, the website of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the University of Florida Entomology and Nematology, and one textbook. The results showed that the predation ability of African sharptooth catfish (Clarias garipenus) was 80.3% greater on average than Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and Oreochromis niloticus as well as the predation ability of Walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) with an average of 79.6%. larger than Anabas testudineus, Oreochromis niloticus, and Poecilia reticulata. Further experimental research to deepen scientific information on the predation ability of various catfish species against Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae are still needed. Cooperation between fields and communities is also needed to prevent the spread of dengue disease properly. Mosquito larvae eating fish belonging to catfish species, namely African sharptooth catfish (Clarias garipenus) and walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) have the potential to be a new biological vector controller because they have very high predation power compared to other mosquito larvae eating fish.

Imidacloprid is a Neonicotinoid pesticide extensively utilized in Indian agriculture to manage insect pests. Its water solubility and systemic nature are widely acknowledged to present a risk of contaminating adjacent water bodies. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Imidacloprid pesticide on the hematological parameters of Clarias batracus. In a controlled experimental setting, various sub-lethal concentrations (3, and 4 ppm) of Imidacloprid were administered at different time intervals. The impact of the pesticide was more pronounced in the short-term experiments. Hematological alterations were observed in the fish blood, where the hemoglobin (Hb), Red blood cells (RBCs), Packed cell volume (PCV), Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin(MCH) declined with increasing concentrations, while the white blood cells (WBCs) increased under the same conditions. The results demonstrate statistical significance at the P < 0.05 level. These findings demonstrate that Imidacloprid can lead to significant variations in the hematological characteristics and induce a certain level of stress in fish. Therefore, the hematological factors of fish could serve as a sensitive tool for assessing their health status.
