Na contemporaneidade, a intensidade dos processos e a velocidade dos acontecimentos marcam as relações humanas e as relações que estas estabelecem com o espaço. A sociedade é alvo de mudanças que alteram a rede de relações que a sustenta, relações entre sociedade e a natureza, estabelecidas a partir do trabalho. A produção do espaço é iminente à produção da sociedade no movimento histórico da sua reprodução. Neste Sentido, objetivamos entender a produção do espaço da cidade de Nova Friburgo inserido no conjunto de relações que dão conteúdo e sentido à vida da cidade, tendo espaço e desenvolvimento como os principais conceitos norteadores da pesquisa. Objetivamos realizar uma crítica ao modelo capitalista e a razão ocidental como pressuposto da mundialização que tem como propósito manter as estruturas de poder e exploração, e não o desenvolvimento autônomo de lugares, ou seja, aqueles lugares em que quando é explorada as tradições pode-se gerar um desenvolvimento livre sem imposições de agentes externos à comunidade. O objeto da dissertação é o processo mais recente de produção e reprodução do espaço urbano da cidade de Nova Friburgo baseado em um modelo capitalista de acumulação flexível e conceitos de metropolização e modernidade, construídos socialmente, estabeleceram condições de risco em um sítio susceptível a deslizamentos, que a partir de inúmeras apropriações torna-se urbano. Neste sentido é necessário investigar as contradições do processo de urbanização que se manifestam na cidade de uma forma desigual e combinada.
In contemporaneity, the intensification of the processes and speed of events marks human relationships and, the relationships they establish with the space. Society is subject to changes, which can changes the relationships that sustain it, relations between society and nature, which is connected by work. The production of space is imminent production of society in the historic movement of reproduction, in this sense; the objective of the paper is to analyze the production of the city of Nova Friburgo inserted in the space of relations that give content and meaning to everyday life city in actuality, having space and development as the fundamental concepts of the paper. We intend to realize an criticism to capitalist model and globalization presupposes that aims to maintain the structures of power and exploitation, and not to encourage the autonomous development, it means the rising of those spaces that when traditions are explored can generates a free development without external impositions of the community. We have as object of the paper the most recent production and reproduction process of urban space in the Nova Friburgo city based on a capitalist system, flexible accumulation and concepts of metropolisation and modernity, that are socially constructed, established risk conditions at a site liable to landslides, which from numerous appropriations becomes urban. In this sense it is necessary to investigate the contradictions of the urbanization process manifested in the city in unequal and combined forms.

Istanbul undertakes about half of the imports and exports of the country which has been increasing the importance. It is the most developed city in Turkey with a population reaching up to 13.255.685 people in 2010 consisting of %17.98 of the national population. The service sector demand and the real estate production are expected to be high together with the Istanbul&rsquo
s rising position in the globalization process. Upon the increase in demand for global sectors, the production of the commercial real estate tends to increase, which can be observed from construction statistics that are published by the Turkish Statistical Institute. The world city literature developed in several respects. As to the world city/global city concept, there are three main theories that play major roles in understanding the emergence of global command centers and strongly influenced the world city literature that belong to John Friedmann, Saskia Sassen and Manuel Castells. Developments in lines with the world city/global city concept appeared in Istanbul with the 1980&rsquo
s reforms towards economic liberalization, together with the support of the Government to make Istanbul a &lsquo
global city&rsquo
. The city is the primary gateway of Turkey to the global economy and Istanbul has been well ranked in academic rosters of world cities since the beginning of the 21 st century. v When the case of Istanbul is considered, the city as a world city is expected to be relatively at an earlier stage of globalization process, and with respect to these major theories

. In order to figure out the place of Istanbul in the globalization process in the country, Istanbul&rsquo
s data are compared with the same data for Ankara and Izmir comprising the years between 2002 and 2010. It is aimed to figure out the developed sectors of Istanbul and to clarify how Istanbul is leading in the production of real estate for the global sectors of both manufacturing and service activities. The developments in respect of globalization process of the city can be expected in the direction of the formation of world city as defined in line with the Friedmann&rsquo
s theory, since not only buildings for service sector activities are produced in Istanbul, but also industrial real estate production at almost equal level during much of the investigated period. It is expected that global city functions, in lines with the Saskia Sassen&rsquo
s framework will develop as world city functions consolidate in Istanbul. Therefore, the commercial real estate production is expected to be more rapid and more in line with the growth of world city functions in Istanbul, compared to two other most developed cities of Turkey which are Ankara and Izmir.

A theoretical study of possible production systems for future production of a side panel made ofcomposite material and belonging to an urban city car has been carried out. The study has takenplace within Team H2politO at the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy. Three different productionvolumes have been analyzed considering dimensional limits, economy, production rate, machinery,material and environment. These have been set to 1 000, 10 000 and 100 000 components/year.Previous studies within the field have been analyzed, combined and used as a basis in order to arriveat an appropriate choice of production methodology regarding the different production volumes. Acomparison with production methods for the side panel if it would have been manufactured withaluminum has been made and the profitability of composite production has been evaluated.Production‐ and material data have been collected from the software CES EduPack and revised basedon study visits and interviews. The side panel has thereafter been edited and dimensioned in termsof recommendations for optimization of a future production. Modeling has been made usingAutodesk Alias Design, Photoshop and Edraw Max. Furthermore, overview plan drawings ofproduction plants have been made.The study has given results in terms of recommendations and requirement specifications for futureprojects within the field. For continued studies about the profitability of composite production, anaccurate study about different composite materials including tests of material characteristics issuggested. A detailed plan of the production plant with exact dimensions and technical data foroptimization of production time is also recommended. In addition to this, it is essential to develop abetter assembly system between the side panel and the roof panel as well as investigate thepossibility of a more profitable production method for medium‐ to large scale production ofcomposite details.
En teoretisk studie av möjliga produktionssystem för framtida produktion av en sidopanel ikompositmaterial på en stadsbil har utförsts. Studien har ägt rum inom Team H2politO på TekniskaHögskolan i Turin i Italien. Tre olika produktionsvolymer har analyserats med avseende pådimensionsgränser, ekonomi, produktionstid, maskineri, material och miljö. Dessa har valts till 1 000,10 000 respektive 100 000 komponenter/år. Tidigare studier inom ämnet har analyserats,kombinerats och använts som underlag för att komma fram till lämpligt val av produktionsmetod förde olika produktionsvolymerna. En jämförelse med produktionsmetoder för sidopanelen om denskulle ha varit tillverkad i aluminium har gjorts och lönsamheten av komposittillverkning förkomponenten har utvärderats. Produktions‐ och materialdata har hämtats ur datorprogrammet CESEduPack samt reviderats utifrån studiebesök och intervjuer. Sidopanelen har därefter med hjälp avrekommendationer anpassats och dimensionerats för att optimera en framtida produktion.Modellering har skett i datorprogrammet Autodesk Alias Design, Photoshop och Edraw Max.Ytterligare har översiktsritningar på produktionsanläggningar gjorts.Studien har gett resultat i form av rekommendationer och kravspecifikationer för framtida projektinom området. För fortsatta studier inom lönsamheten av kompositproduktion föreslås ennoggrannare analys av olika kompositmaterial samt tester av materialegenskaper. En detaljritning avproduktionsanläggningen med mer exakta mått och tekniska data för optimering av produktionstidrekommenderas också. Utöver dessa förslag, är det nödvändigt att utveckla en bättre lösning påmontering mellan sidopanelen och takpanelen samt en mer lönsam produktionsmetod för medel‐ tillmassproduktion av kompositdetaljer.

Umeå är en av de städer i Sverige som växer snabbast och innerstaden behöver förtätas för att lyckas tillgodose framtidens behov av bostäder. Att förtäta medför ett ansvar att ta hänsyn till stadens invånare och existerande byggnader. Det är framförallt unga vuxna som drabbas av bostadsbristen. Undersökningar har visat att många av de unga vuxna skulle vilja bo tillsammans med andra istället för att bo själva. Projektet förtätar varsamt en centralt placerad tomt i staden genom att dels bygga bostäder på underutnyttjad mark och dels genom att bygga på en redan existerande byggnad. Däremellan skapas samtidigt en innergård som delvis är publik. Projektet undersöker också ingående material och tektoniska aspekter genom att utveckla en keramisk fasad i hög detaljnivå. Undersökningen av det keramiska materialet bedrivs genom studieresor, tillverkning och modellering i fullskala. Projektet förser tomten I Umeå med ett genomtänkt förslag på förtätning av staden genom att kombinera undersökningar i både stor och liten skala.
The fast growing city of Umeå needs to densify its inner city as a strategy to cope with its current and future housing situation. Densifying comes with a responsibility to care both for the existing inhabitants’ needs and the city’s built structures. It is largely young adults who are affected from the housing shortage. They often want to share their apartment with others, rather than living alone. The project deals with careful densification of a centrally located site by creating new structures on underused space, by adding to the already built and by creating a public space in-between. Furthermore, the project investigates the building’s material and tectonical aspects by developing a ceramic façade in detail. The investigation of the ceramic material is carried out through study trips, fabrication and modelling in full scale. The project provides the site in Umeå with an accurate solution for densified housing combining both large and small scale investigation.

Our interactions with cities are increasingly mediated through a complex array of technologies, including location-aware mobile devices and a vast number of online platforms. However, we often also use these tools to create content about the places that we live in and travel through. My thesis examines what I define as "place-based media," that is, user-generated content produced about place. This content - photos of street life, overheard quotes, and local reviews, for example - emerges out of daily routines, and has a reciprocal relationship with the urban environment, both contributing to, as well as reflecting the life of the city. In this thesis, I aim to explore the relationship between the technologies and practices involved in the production of place-based media. In my approach, I situate place-based media within relevant historical precedents, such as street photography. In addition, I examine content produced about a single neighborhood, Central Square, Cambridge, in order to better understand the social and affective qualities of content that is created in dialogue with place. Ultimately, this project examines the production of place-based media as an everyday urban practice, with an eye towards the potential implications these media could have for contemporary cities and city neighborhoods.

In the past decade, the creative city discourse has pulsated with activity, with academics, policy wonks, national organizations, and community non-profits attempting to find footholds in the conversation. By applying the lessons of 20th-century industrial complexes, or "technopoles," to a new conception of production in the 21st century, city builders, planners, and business developers tackle the new role of fitting the commercial creative sector into Castells's 'networks' and this creative city discourse, in order to generate innovation in the creative city. The thesis aims to closely examine the role that for-profit creative production now plays in the 21st century urban economic engine and the ways in which synergy may be created by and among many individual creative firms in the city. The thesis uses the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City, as a case and example of how to go about supporting new kinds of urban creative clusters. The thesis proposes principles, guidelines, and an approach to cluster development, not as a universal solution for currently uncoordinated clustering, but as a place-based example for applying the principles of this thesis. I will review the evolution of 21st-century production and the emergence of the creative economy, including the case for locating creative production centers in metropolitan locales, in order to illustrate the shape of the new production landscape in the creative city.
(cont.) I next present a framework for organizing and developing a 21st-century creative cluster, and outline fourteen key ingredients to their development. Finally, I apply this framework to a creative-cluster development strategy in Brooklyn, identifying three possible areas of intervention where creative firms already operate, and propose a public-private management entity structure to provide the necessary synergistic 'glue.'

This thesis contributes new knowledge about music cities and relies on the key concept of what I define as a city’s ‘undersong’. I define undersong as the aural foundations of a city from a political economy and placemaking perspective. It includes the social, cultural, political, pedagogical, and infrastructural substrata that feed into the music-making practices of a city. This research provides new theory for what are being described as ‘music cities’. Through qualitative analysis and my lived experience as a musician and music producer, I examine how various factors ultimately inform what I term the undersong of a music city.

This project is speculation in search of possibilities and rethinking the potential of Gamla Stan. Society is continually changing, as are the cities that we live in. The old town is mainly a residential area, but also a “living, pedestrian-friendly museum”. This is a place out of time and frozen in its form, a certain sensitivity is required when thinking about such a fragile context. However, the urban structure is not a fixed entity, but a dynamic and evolving one. By gentle carving in the existing city fabric, the aim is to re-introduce a workshop space in a contemporary manner. The idea is tested on the block of Cassiopea, where its building components get interconnected to make a continuous interior. The new space is about forgetting about the hyper-productivity mindset, with an intention to promote aesthetic pleasure and a slow pace of life. This collective and multifunctional space is a representation of artistic expression, a city atelier for making craft using technology. A space for artists, makers, and education, visible to the public.

The potential of emerging technology to address poly-urban issues is a growing focus on the agendas of cities worldwide. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding how and in whose interests it should be applied - should the aim be to establish 'smart cities' or to encourage 'smart citizens'? The 'bottom-up' approach advocates the latter and recognises the potential of technology to facilitate the prioritisation of issues and co-production of spaces. Particularly in a developing context where resources are severely limited, the ability to prioritise interventions to have maximum impact is exciting. However, these projects and the processes which enable them are under-researched. In this dissertation, a combination of Network Action Research and case study methods are used to guide the application of a selection of digital tools in combination with semi-structured and indepth interviews, surveys, and focus groups to a specific context. The products of this are insights regarding the processes which enable inclusive bottom-up smart city projects; the application of the Network Action Research method; and a context-specific resource of information to guide the future prioritisation of projects and planning in the study area. This dissertation explores the value of inclusive participation in planning, and the role that technology can play in facilitating this. However, it also uncovers the complex and non-linear nature of these projects, ultimately arguing that although technology is a valuable resource, it is not a catch-all. A hybridised approach to bottom-up smart city projects is crucial to their success.

A relação que o homem estabelece com o espaço natural a partir da necessidade de ocupação e humanização do território no Brasil, ao longo do processo histórico, sem dúvida passa por percepções conflitantes ou até mesmo antagônicas. A partir de um mapeamento das intrincadas relações entre natureza e artificio na constituição das paisagens brasileiras, tomando como referência principalmente o ambiente cultural da cidade do Rio de Janeiro desde as primeiras ocupações até o século XX, este trabalho busca gerar uma reflexão e uma problematização acerca da construção de uma espacialidade moderna, caracterizada por uma dependência complexa e orgânica entre arquitetura e meio, capaz de esmaecer seus limites e fronteiras, desconstruindo a velha dicotomia rígida entre campos, e propondo pensar natureza, arquitetura, paisagem, cidade,como novos domínios disciplinares de caráter híbrido.
The relation that man establishes with the natural space since the need to occupy and humanize the territory in Brazil, during the historical process, certainly involves conflicting or even opposed perceptions. From a mapping of the intricate relation between nature and artifice in the constitution of Brazilian landscapes, taking as mainly reference the cultural environment of Rio de Janeiro city since the first occupations until the twentieth century, this work seeks to generate a reflection and questioning about the construction of a modern spatiality, characterized by a complex and organic dependency between architecture and environment, capable of fade their limits and boundaries, deconstructing the old rigid dichotomy between fields, and proposing to think nature, architecture, landscape, city, as new disciplinary fields of hybrid character.

Traditional paces of production in an urban context have been crudely built as machines, exploiting the resources of a location without care for the consequences. Their success has been measured primarily in terms of how efficiently they can accommodate a particular process in order to achieve an end product. This dissertation explores the manifestation of a new model for a light production facility within an urban context. A new clothing production facility is proposed in reaction to the infestation of imported apparel wear within the city. The new facility punctures into existing structures of a production typology, exploring how edge conditions and production processes can become more responsive to the urban environment, advocating a hybrid production facility. The design of the facility is informed by a theoretical premise, exploring labour, which refers to elevating the act process above product. This draws parallels to the way in which architecture can, through cyclic processes, become both artefact and utility within its context.

This study looks at the recent rise of the public relations profession and its influence on national news production in Britain. Simply put, has public relations undermined the notion of the fourth estate media in Britain and has it advantaged certain kinds of news source over others? The thesis breaks down into three parts. The first part documents the rise of public relations in Britain, its profile, and distribution amongst a range of institutions and organisations. The developing public relations and media industries are compared and the literature, on the relations between 'news sources', PR practitioners and journalists, is critically evaluated. The second part focuses on corporate public relations generally and, more specifically, on financial and City PR. Industry and fieldwork data are contrasted with radical and liberal accounts of media-corporate source relations. The findings suggest that corporate PR has had limited success in influencing mainstream news but been considerably more adept at managing specialist news sections. It is thus argued that PR has benefited the corporate sector, less by influencing journalists and the general public, and more by excluding them. This pattern is supported with a detailed case study involving Granada's take-over of Forte in 1995/96. The third part discusses 'resource-poor' and 'outsider' groups - more specifically, British trade unions. Fieldwork data is used to test radical and pluralist accounts of the coverage of such groups in the mass media. The findings argue that unions have found new ways to increase their media access using PR - and with rather more success than earlier studies suggested. The conclusion is borne out by a case study of the UCW's (Union of Communication Workers) successful PR campaign to halt Post Office privatisation in 1994. Finally, the separate findings of the thesis are used to develop a fuller description of how public relations affects media production and news source access.

Cultural production constitutes a significant force in the reconstruction, reterritorialization, and reimaging of the postindustrial inner city, the privileged site of clustered production within a reconfigured metropolitan space economy. This has been best demonstrated within older precincts notably characterized by the adaptive reuse of heritage structures, often to the extent of the comprehensive restoration of entire blocks or subareas. The unique material characteristics of these enduring new industrial districts have led to an association of cultural production with a heritage built environment, generating an alluring and paradoxical aesthetic where the brick and iron of an older industrial vernacular mixes with the auras of technology, globalization, and modernity. Following the work of scholars who have introduced spatiality and materiality to the cultural industries research domain, this thesis addresses the reflexive relationship that cultural producers maintain with the unique material and semiotic characteristics of these enduring new industrial districts, in which heritage imageries and signifiers of collective memory inform creative personas, processes, and outputs. This ‘reflexive project of the self’ influences the maintenance of the built environment and has the capacity to alter imageries and collective memory wherever signifiers are re-associated or obscured. Drawing on interviews in Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as on a broad literature review incorporating sources on cultural production, the aesthetics of residential gentrification, and the ‘city of collective memory’; this paper seeks to assess a range of responses to the history of Vancouver’s inner city landscapes. The analysis demonstrates how Vancouver’s historical imageries have been romanticized and reinterpreted to inform a mythology of cultural production in the city. Our conclusions will be of interest to geographers attempting to ‘place’ cultural production within their understanding of the changing landscapes of the twenty-first century city, as well as to planners in need of a more critical interpretation of the dynamics undergirding the insistent upgrading of production districts.

Contemporary art and exhibition-making is increasingly deployed in the urban development and marketing of cities for political-economic benefit, yet the examination of the aesthetic and cultural aspects of urban life is curiously limited. In probing the unique political conditions of Brisbane, Australia, this thesis contrasts two periods — 1985-1988 and 2012-2015 — in order to more fully understand the critical pressures impacting upon the production of contemporary aesthetic projects. While drawing upon Henri Lefebvre's right to the city, and insisting upon a right to imagine the city, this thesis concludes that a consistent re-articulation of critical pressure, which anticipates oppositional positions, is necessary.

This thesis project is an exploration of process in both design and winemaking. Wine has long been a part of Virginia’s history and culture and in recent years has influenced architecture and design that is specific to winemaking and hospitality. Through an interior intervention, this project addresses the many challenges of marrying production and hospitality design criteria under one roof. The final design encourages understanding of process through links between production and consumption with both a winemaking facility and laboratory that are integrated into the surrounding hospitality-oriented spaces. This visual exposure to the facility stimulates patron interest and intuitive knowledge of the intricate nature of the winemaking process. The concept of process is revealed through the use of materials and their application, designed in such a way to encourage patrons to explore how they are constructed. The use of natural materials that patina are used to celebrate the aging process that is inextricably linked to both design and wine. In addition, new ways of using materials that are part of the winemaking process are employed to expose patrons to nuanced aspects of the process that otherwise remain hidden.

This dissertation argues for a re-grounding of world city research in world-systems and dependency theory. It proposes to conduct 'vertical world city research', which explicitly investigates the spatial interconnectedness between world cities and peripheral locations of production, rather than focus on the relationships between different world cities. The idea of vertical world city research is partly a response to recent post-colonial critiques of world city research. Advanced Producer Services (APS) have long been considered command and control functions over global capital. Constructions of world city networks have largely relied on data based on large APS firms. While this research has made important contributions to our understanding of the interconnectedness of world cities, the argument of this dissertation is that it may not adequately capture the role of other essential sectors in the global economy. It is proposed that world city research needs to investigate the global control networks over monopolistically (or more correctly oligopolistically) organised processes. The focus of this dissertation is therefore the urban control network of the monopoly over natural resources. The dissertation investigates the locations of ownership control over the world's ten largest non-fuel mineral producers. These ten firms account for more than one third of the world's non-fuel mineral production by value. It also investigates specifically the platinum industry, which is controlled by a very small number of firms. While cities that are often identified as world cities, including New York and London, feature in the lists of cities that host the owners of the global mining industry and the platinum industry in particular, a number of cities in middle income economies are at the top of the list. The last part of the dissertation focuses on the role of nation states in the formation of global cities and how corporate decisions are administered through a network of cities. The effect of these decisions on mining communities is explicitly studied. This part focuses on Johannesburg and South Africa. The research suggests that the spatial organisation of the world economy and the concentration of power is more dispersed than previously suggested.

Questions about the role of the "informal sector" color much of the discussion of urban economic development in poor countries. Why is there an informal sector (and how to define it)? Are informal businesses stagnant or dynamic, and can they contribute to development? In the small Bolivian city of Sucre, site of this study, there is no "informal sector"; rather, the entire economy demonstrates informal characteristics. With a handful of exceptions, businesses are all very small and household centered. Most manufacturing is done by hand or with simple machines, and informal labor and trade relationships predominate. This thesis describes Sucre's producers, especially chocolate-makers and carpenters, and the local organizations which work with them to promote business growth. Despite attempts by local NGOs, grassroots organizations, and business people, Sucre' businesses stay, small and informal. The reasons for this include: (A) the size and composition of the local market; (B) the problems of trust and contract enforcement which raise transaction costs (for hiring workers, contracting distributors and forming partnerships); (C) the inability to "catch up" with more efficient, mechanized competitors in neighboring countries; and (D) a tendency for households to diversify their investments as a response to risk and uncertain markets. The main problem impeding business growth in Sucre is not the businesses' informality (which is principally a result of their smallness), but the local social, economic and institutional environment in which they must work. This is an environment in which business owners have learned to survive and even, occasionally, prosper, but one which they have thus far been unable to change.

In the eighteenth century, Durham City was an important centre of political power, the nucleus of which was the cathedral whose own wealth and power was immense. The Bishop, as the King’s representative, governed County Durham, and Durham City, as the capital of the palatinate, was a vibrant socio-economic centre. Those with means spent much of their free time patronising the large number of concerts, balls, assemblies, or theatrical productions that were frequently held in the city. For a musician, these public events provided ample opportunities to make a living. There were also opportunities to teach the children of wealthy patrons and to publish compositions. In consequence a large number of musicians came to the city, either to live or to visit, with race and assize weeks (the busiest time of the year) as a major focus of their employment. The centre of musical life in Durham was the cathedral which dominated the production of both sacred and secular music. In order to attract good quality singers to the north, the cathedral’s Chapter offered unusually high salaries to its lay-clerks. The clerks, as able singers, forged a high reputation as a musical force in the region at a time when the quality of sacred music and cathedral choirs was in serious decline. Some of the lay-clerks, most notably Edward Meredith and William Evance, would travel large distances to perform. Until 1763 the cathedral organist was James Hesletine who was succeeded by Thomas Ebdon. Both men were also involved in the local concert scene, although, under Hesletine, a significant dispute with the Newcastle musician Charles Avison took place which ultimately led to the establishment of a rival subscription series by Avison in partnership with John Garth. Music permeated all levels of society at Durham. In addition to what was produced for concerts and at the cathedral, music was prevalent in many other arenas. Music formed part of worship in all of the city’s churches, although it was only at St. Mary le Bow that it reached an appreciable standard. As part of the broader matrix of performances of secular music, Durham possessed its own musical society, and, as part of its wider public role, music performed a key role in civic and other ceremonial occasions as well as for local freemasonry, an organisation to which many of Durham’s musicians belonged. Other forms of music-making took place in the domestic environment, but it was also possible to find music performed in the city’s taverns. Furthermore, the performance of folk music and the presence of the town waits and military bands meant that music was commonly heard on the city’s streets. This thesis is based on a detailed study of several primary sources. The most important of these is the local newspapers, but ecclesiastical records, diaries, personal letters, published books on music and local history, and the music itself (both printed and in manuscript), have also been closely examined. By means of this archival work it has been possible to examine the whole spectrum of musical life across the city, a study which amply demonstrates that Durham was one of the most important provincial musical centres outside London. In fact, notwithstanding its provincial location, Durham was by no means insular in its outlook, nor was it entirely backward-looking, as can be seen in the distinctly innovative and inventive work of Garth.

Privately built satellite cities are becoming an increasingly common form of urban development in peri-urban areas of Southeast Asian cities. However, while they are beginning to receive academic attention, the majority of studies focus on design and planning issues and have a limited capacity to fully explain how satellite cities are produced. In this thesis, I investigate the production of satellite cities in Phnom Penh drawing upon recent theoretical advances that critically consider the relational and territorial geographies of urban development. The satellite cities in Phnom Penh are driven by the mobility of urban development capital, concepts and expertise that are predominately intra-Asian in scope. In examining these intra-Asian connections I avoid casting satellite cities as universal, Western urban forms and contribute to debates that problematise the Western-centrism of urban knowledge production. In the late 1990s, Cambodia emerged from several decades of conflict and communism to become more integrated into the regional and global economy. This political and economic transition led to rapid changes in the urban landscape, including the construction of satellite cities. Drawing upon interviews with key informants, I suggest that satellite cities are not simply a result of the government’s incapacity to provide infrastructure and plan for urbanisation, but the state also has an essential role in allowing land acquisitions and encouraging inflows of foreign investment. I examine in detail two satellite cities, one developed by a South Korean and other by an Indonesian company, and suggest that the South Korean company’s activities are underlined by the close relationship between their home country and Cambodia, as well as the supportive role of the South Korean developmental state. In contrast, the Indonesian company pioneered the ‘satellite city’ concept in Indonesia and is now exporting the concept to other Asian countries. A critical examination of the intra-Asian geographies of satellite city production opens up the possibility of viewing Southeast Asian cities on their own terms without relying solely on Western theory.

This study was done by administering household surveys to 50% of the families in the three communities. Families were selected through stratified random sampling. This allowed us to determine how much families are exploiting species that have a significant level of production as well as whether they use them for a commercial activity or subsistence. With regard to cows, 60.40 ± 4.72% of families use them. Each family has an average of 1.68 ± 0.21 cows. Productive cows make up 36.9% of the above percentage, which is a majority. The measured rate of production was 6.48 ± 0.25 L/cow/day. Overall, 40.16 ± 3.17% of production was used for household consumption while the rest was sold. These parameters as well as the sale of live animals helped San Nicolas have an annual income of 735 US dollars, which shows that this community relies more on commercial activity. On the other hand, San Clemente and San Francisco had annual incomes of 367 and 279 US dollars respectively. This shows that these communities focus more on familial subsistence. Of the major species, sheep are the least exploited with 54.80 ± 8.74% of families using them. The first lambing occurs at 17.79 ± 0.48 months. Newborns are weaned at 5.57 ± 0.11 months by only 27.27 ± 4.47% of families. Of the weaned newborns, 60.69 ± 5.13% are kept and the rest are sold. Every 10.46 ± 0.47 months, 77.96% of the wool produced is sold. Generally, the sheep are sol d at 22.84 ± 1.75 months of age. This generates an average annual income of 40.85 ± 19.26 US dollars, which indicates that this activity is focused on familial subsistence. Swine production is the most common form of animal production. Pigs are exploited by 81.86 ± 7.17% of families with each family having an average of 2.11 ± 0.16 animals. A sow’s first delivery occurs at 16.48 ± 0.48 months and their productive life comes after reproducing 1.98 ± 0.15 times. Each litter has 5.72 ± 0.19 offspring with a post-weaning mortality rate of 28.99 ± 4.82%. Offspring are weaned at 2.90 ± 0.12 months. Overall, 65.13% of the weaned offspring are kept and the rest are sold. Annual revenue from pig production is 63.2 ± 22.46 US dollars which indicates it is used for familial subsistence, acting as a safeguard against economic emergencies at times. Of the minor species, the guinea pig is the most exploited. It is used by 86.11 ± 3.65% of families with each family having an average of 12.04 ± 1.31 guinea pigs. The mothers have an average of 2.44 ± 0.06 offspring per litter with a weaning rate of 75.81 ± 4.33%. Overall, 86.91% of production is used for family consumption and the rest is sold. The annual income generated by this activity is 6.24 ± 0.51 US dollars which indicates that this is an activity dedicated to providing food for the family. Rabbits are used by 49.42 ± 5.23% of families, each having an average of 4.03 ± 0.64 animals. There is an average of 6.57 ± 0.29 newborns per litter with a weaning rate of 41.16 ± 5.20%. Overall, 80.18 ± 4.16% of production is used for family consumption. This activity is similar to guinea pig production seeing as the annual income it generates is only 12.80 ± 1.10 US dollars. Chickens are exploited by 77.33 ± 4.39% of families with each family having an average of 5.88 ± 0.60 animals. Broiler chickens make up 48.22% of the poultry population with the rest being made up of native and field hens. Overall, 68.96% of broiler chickens are used for family consumption while 89.31 ± 3.27% of hens are used for family consumption. The annual income from this activity is 40.13 ± 19.24 US dollars. This makes it appear to have a slight tendency toward commercial use. We conclude that the three communities have different levels of animal exploitation. San Nicolas was the most successful of the three, partially using their livestock production for commercial purposes. San Clemente used part of theirs for commercial purposes as well, but on a lower scale. San Francisco, on the other hand, focuses their livestock production solely on familial subsistence. We recommend that a study be conducted regarding all points involved in the feasibility of production projects in these communities, especially in regard to the organization in each community. This will help improve production levels and make way for a change from a subsistence based economy to a more commercially based economy, ultimately improving the social and nutritional levels of these families.

My thesis is an examination of Singapore's aspiration to become a Global City for the Arts as set out in the Renaissance City Report released in 2000. By examining the key issues surrounding Singapore's attempt to become a Global City for the Arts, this thesis discuss the reasons why Singapore want to be achieve this aim and identifies the key obstacles in realising this goal. Using a Pierre Bourdieu framework of analysis, I provide a different way of examining Singapore's perception of its position in relation to other cities in the world and highlight key areas that Singapore needs to develop as it seeks to truly become a Global City for the Arts. By expanding and extending Bourdieu's concepts of 'field' and 'habitus', I show how the Government firstly, uses a variety of rules and regulations to manage the cultural production of arts and culture in Singapore and secondly, how it attempts to inculcate an appreciation of a specific aesthetic style in both Singaporean artists and audiences. I argue that Singapore's quest to become a Global City for the Arts is stymied due to its inability to develop a meaningful international global profile through the way it attempts to micro-manage the creation, production and consumption of culture in Singapore. These issues coupled with a rapidly changing Singapore society only serve to undermine Singapore's attempt to become a Capital of Culture. I assert that unless there is a fundamental shift in the way policy directives are implemented and enforced in Singapore, it is highly unlikely that Singapore can truly attain its goal of becoming a Global City for the Arts.

As transformações desencadeadas pelo conjunto de processos que se convencionou chamar de globalização repercutiram profundamente em diversas escalas e, na contramão do discurso dos fluxos e da morte do lugar, encontramo-nos cada vez mais concentrados nos espaços urbanos, que vêm sendo caracterizados como os grandes centros dinâmicos da nova economia. Assim, partindo da hipótese de que o modelo prescritivo neoliberal institucionalizado pelo Consenso de Washington foi projetado na cidade sob a forma do planejamento estratégico, o presente trabalho procurará enquadrar o Rio de Janeiro não apenas como a síntese dos processos hegemônicos de mercadorização das relações e espaços, e de espetacularização e espoliação urbana compartilhados pela maioria das cidades contemporâneas – que encontram nos megaeventos grandes catalisadores – mas também como exemplo das contradições inerentes ao contexto histórico-geográfico de um Brasil marcado pela desigualdade e pelo subdesenvolvimento.
The transformations triggered by the set of processes that are conventionally called globalization deeply resonated in various scales. Despite the talk of flows and the alleged death of the place, we find ourselves increasingly concentrated in urban areas, considered the great dynamic centers of the new economy. Assuming that the prescriptive neoliberal model institutionalized by the Washington Consensus was transposed to the city in the form of strategic planning, this dissertation seeks to frame Rio de Janeiro not only as the synthesis of the hegemonic processes of commodification of relations and spaces, and urban spectacularization and spoliation shared by most of the contemporary cities – and catalyzed by the mega events – but also as an example of the contradictions inherent to the historical and geographical context of Brazil as an unequal and underdeveloped country.

This study is an empirical comparison between statistically recorded and unrecorded garment establishments in Shubra El-Kheima. The comparison covers three main areas: labour, marketing channels and forms of cooperation between establishments. Within the area of labour, our findings suggest, firstly, that there are no significant differences in wages, working conditions and secondary terms of employment between workers in recorded and unrecorded establishments. Secondly, that both types of establishments recruit most of their labour from the same pool. And thirdly that differences in the technology used in the production process are limited. These findings challenge some of the assumptions of dual labour market theories. In the area of marketing channels our findings suggest that there are significant differences between the unrecorded and the recorded establishments. The two kinds of establishments rely on different kinds of cloth and use different markets for dissemination. In both cases there was no evidence of links to export markets. These findings suggest that the two types of establishments are part of two different and distinct commodity chains. The unrecorded establishments are linked to a global commodity chain through imported cloth and import competition. The recorded establishments are part of a local commodity chain linking the large textile mills and local retail. In the area of cooperation, our findings suggest that there is a significant level of horizontal cooperation between the unrecorded establishments. This type of cooperation was found to be lacking in the case of the recorded establishments. The findings also suggest that although Shubra El-Kheima has a concentration of firms at each stage of the textile and garment industry, there are no backward linkages between the private garment producers and the local textile industry. Finally, our findings suggest that a combination of intense import competition coupled with policy restrictions on legally imported cloth, have prevented the emergence of an industrial cluster in Shubra El-Kheima, with the varieties of vertical and horizontal cooperation associated with successful clusters in other developing cities.

L’étalement urbain, ses conséquences, la nécessité de tendre vers un urbanismerenouvelé et plus durable amènent à porter un nouveau regard sur les fortifications urbaines. Au-delà de son aspectsymbolique, ce type d’architecture est marqué par des caractéristiques spatiales hors-normes (localisation, volumétrie,géométrie) qui engagent à l’analyser au travers des prismes méthodologiques et conceptuels que fournit la géographie.Comment l’héritage des fortifications urbaines peut-il aujourd’hui être mobilisé afin de créer un espace urbain cohérent,tant sur le plan spatial que social ou symbolique et ainsi répondre aux aspiration des villes actuelles ?La première partie de la thèse porte sur les enjeux auxquels les “villes fortes” sont aujourd’hui confrontées (modernisation,croissance étalement urbain, etc.) et la manière dont leurs “ouvrages lourds” sont affectés. La deuxième partiedu travail s’attache à caractériser le phénomène des “villes fortes” en France aujourd’hui par le biais d’approchesdescriptives, empiriques et statistiques qui permettent de formaliser et d’analyser les logiques et les règles qui régissentle devenir des anciens ouvrages défensifs. La dernière partie de la thèse étudie le potentiel d’urbanisation des zones etouvrages militaires et propose de mesurer l’impact de leur transformation en logements dans le cadre d’un scénariode renouvellement urbain compact pour la ville de Besançon. Il s’agit d’évaluer les conséquences de telles mesuressur le schéma fonctionnel des villes et les formes urbaines. L’ensemble de ces travaux montre l’intérêt du recours auxouvrages défensifs dans le cadre d’un urbanisme à la fois renouvelé, mais aussi plus “durable”, en conformité avec lesformes urbaines, les demandes contemporaines et les projets des villes
A large number of french cities host military historical edifices (citadels, barracks, bastions, defensive walls, etc.). Although their initial defensive functions have been lost over time, these edifices remain deeply rooted in the urban fabric of their host cities. They continue exerting an impact on these cities’ urban morphology and modern-time functions as well as the way in which the concept of city is understood. Cities nowadays face some new challenges,the increasing awareness of urban sprawl and its consequences, coupled with an urge to promote a renewed and sustainable urbanism, invites us to adopt new approaches to study urban fortifications. In addition to their symbolic aspect, fortifications are characterized by their out-of-the-common spatial measure (location, volume and geometry),requiring researchers to use methodologies and geographical concepts for their academic endeavour. Against this background : how can urban fortifications be used to create urban space that is spatially, socially and symbolically coherent with their historical heritage and that also satisfies the functional need of modern cities ?The first part of this doctoral dissertation present modern-day challenges that fortified cities face (modernisation,urban expansion and sprawl, etc.), and the ways in which their “heavy buildings” are affected. The second part sheds light on the relationships between cities and their fortifications, thanks to descriptive, empirical and statistical analyses. The statistical study noticeably builds on a database to examine the rationale and rules underpinning there habilitation of ancient military edifices. The last part of the dissertation proposes an evaluation of the potential of rehabilitating ancient military edifices and spaces for modern urban usage. For this purpose the impact of transforming these fortifications into residential blocks is assessed in a fortified French city (Besançon). This assessment aims at evaluating the consequences of such urban planning measures on urban morphology and functions. Overall, the analysis provided in that doctoral dissertation demonstrates that ancient military buildings have their place in contemporary urban planning. They help to achieve a renewed and sustainable urban design in line with the urban morphology,modern social and functional requirements and the development perspectives in their host cities

Under capitalist mode of production urban processes gain specific features and meanings. Fundamental is the relationship between processes of capital accumulation and the production of built environment. In this context, the capital switching theory claims that as profit levels are lowered, the probability that higher levels of capital tending to enter the property sector increases. In the first stage of a two-staged research, a macro-analysis on construction activities in Turkey limited to post-1980 period indicates that there no counter-cyclical relationship prevails between productive sectors of the economy and construction activities. It is observed that the state intervention and its supportive policies regarding the production of built environment are the dominant determinants in the Turkish case. Based on these findings, a second focus was on the relationships between the state and capital engaged in the production of urban built environment. Various forms of state intervention, mostly as examples of deregulation and liberalization of planning controls and urban development legislation are identified at this stage. The major findings lead to the conclusion that urban processes are open to the profit-oriented and speculative efforts of political actors as well as the economic actors. Hence the necessity of development of counter-strategies and policies as parts of planning and urban development system verified.

This thesis aims at increasing knowledge about climate research in developing countries and how research can be constructed, implemented and evaluated to be useful for local capacity building and climate action. This has been achieved by studying a concrete research project in Kota, India. Semi-structured interviews and one workshop has been conducted with researchers, stakeholders and one research financier to identify their perspectives on the studied research project as well as future participatory climate research. In the analysis, some identified opportunities for climate research were local knowledge and engagement, stakeholder awareness about the studies issues, a common platform to discuss research outcomes and research that presents possible solutions to local problems. Identified barriers were a lack of representation of specific groups, organizational problems among stakeholders, complex texts and a lack of policies or guidelines. This thesis also suggests some important factors to consider when performing participatory projects, such as planning the project carefully with a thought about timing, evaluation and involvement of many societal groups.

The thesis regards a conceptual distinction between the city as the place for food consumption, and the countryside as the place for food production. This distinction turns to be problematic because of the illusory possibility of endless consumption generated within the city to be inconsiderate of the limitations of rural production. On this ground, the thesis demonstrates this distinction to relate to historical patterns of food production and consumption within, respectively, rural and urban environments. It does so by illustrating how the industrial expansion over the historical city walls and its consequent de-industrialization have fostered a progressive functional and physical segregation of urban spaces of consumption. The thesis acknowledges that any assumption as to the countryside’s separation from the city can be overturned by a more nuanced relationship between these two entities. This thesis argues that this can be achieved through the combined application, upon the urban environment, of selected principles of the Slow Food movement, conflating food production with the pleasure of food consumption; and a conception of agriculture not in antagonism with the city.

Hong Kong and Taipei embraced global city formation in the late 1990s as part of their socio-spatial ‘repositioning’ amidst the rise of China and transformations in global capitalism. This thesis investigates the production of space in Hong Kong and Taipei, focusing on socio-spatial struggles over global city formation. The focus is informed by a central challenge the thesis sets itself, which is to develop a relational and dialectical understanding of the production of space and global city formation in Hong Kong and Taipei. Drawing from relational geography and the method of incorporated comparison, this thesis explores Hong Kong and Taipei’s global city formation, understood as moments of spatial-temporal differentiation. By also furthering a spatial political economy perspective, the thesis situates Hong Kong and Taipei’s global city formation within national, regional, and international contexts in the 2000s, as mutually interacting urban processes. The thesis addresses scholarship on city branding and the production of the built environment to uncover the particularities of Hong Kong and Taipei’s global city formation in the 2000s. Here, the thesis highlights the role of the state, at multiple scales, in the production of global space in both cities. The thesis also specifically explores everyday global city experiences in Hong Kong and Taipei through critical engagement with public housing provision. Drawing on a dialectical strand of socio-spatial theory, the thesis finally turns to questioning the contradictions and contestations of multiple spatial imaginaries and differentiated claims to urban space in Hong Kong and Taipei’s global city formation.

In this research, the “Smart City-edifice” of Lisbon has been examined through qualitative field work carried out in the city. The concept of the Smart City- edifice has been designed by the author in an attempt to grasp the ambiguous Smart City ambition as an assemblage of (i) specific techniques incorporated into the urban environment (ii) the modes of governance which these techniques allow for, particularly real time data collection & (iii) issues of city branding, placemaking and urban, Smart regeneration. The highlighted empirical material has been produced in collaboration with interlocutors from three different projects, and relate to the three different facets of the Smart Cityedifice: A developer of a gamification scheme (e-governance), a sustainable neighbourhood project (Tech-driven sustainability and governance/civic participation) and lastly a creative hub (branding, creativity & regeneration). These facets are being examined in the context of Lisbon, a city which has gone through a re-formulation of urban agendas in the capitalist restructuring of the economy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. The post-crisis strategy in Lisbon is interpreted as a sort of “attraction hysteria” (Anttiroiko, 2014), as much effort has been placed on attracting global capital and tourism, incentivised not least by a liberalized, profitable housing market. This attraction hysteria is understood by the author as producing specific implications for the development of the Smart Cityedifice. Main findings include the hinderances that said politics have produced for ambitions of civic participation and other democratic visions of the Smart City. These findings are understood in the light of the Lefebvrian framework of the “right to the city” and critical understandings of the touristified city. The field work itself has been guided by two key research questions, these being: a) How are Smart City narratives being operationalized locally by actors in Lisbon? B) What possible tensions could arise between Smart aims of global urban competitiveness and aims of civic participation, in the context of Lisbon?

A tese discute os mecanismos de seleção e apropriação dos espaços da cidade e a subsequente construção imagética da favela em Cidade de Deus. A partir da análise da narrativa visual da favela fílmica, o trabalho propõe a denominação da direção de arte realizada como invisível. Tal termo expressa o conceito de um cinema que tem na arte um critério importante de verossimilhança que, por fim, leva o espectador a crer que não houve manipulação do espaço filmado. A proposição da nomenclatura direção de arte invisível ampara-se no entendimento do conceito estético de Cidade de Deus e em uma incursão no modus operandi dos enunciados da arte que se articulam na construção das imagens: cenografia, produção de objetos, figurino e maquiagem. A fim de um maior entendimento formal da favela carioca, Rio, 40 graus e 5x Favela se juntam à análise. Dessa forma, o trabalho faz uma leitura de filmes nos quais a cidade é também um dos personagens. Se Rio, 40 graus e 5x Favela tomam emprestado determinados ícones urbanos e geográficos para estruturar seus roteiros, é através de Cidade de Deus que vamos buscar articular o paradoxo em torno de uma direção de arte que se efetiva ao se fazer invisível.
This thesis concerns the mechanisms of selection and appropriation of urban spaces and the further construction of a slum\'s imagery in the film City of God. From the analysis of the visual narrative of the cinematic slum, this dissertation intends to describe a production design achieved as invisible. The term expresses a concept of filmmaking which carries in the craft significant criteria of verisimilitude, which finally leads the viewer to believe that there was no manipulation of the set. The subject of the term invisible production design is supported by the understanding of the aesthetic concept of the film City of God, and by the study of the modus operandi of the art premises which articulate the construction of images: set design, set dressing, costume design and makeup. For a deeper formal understanding of slums in Rio, the films Rio, 40 Graus and 5x Favela are part of this analysis. Thus, this essay depicts films where the city is also perceived as a character. In the sense that Rio, 40 Graus and 5x Favela borrow certain urban and geographic icons in order to structure their scripts, it is through City of God that we may articulate the paradox around an production design that is effective in making itself invisible.

Aim of this thesis is to explain the role of property relations in the production of urban form. It is assumed that urban form is produced not only as a physical setting but also as a concrete and relatively fixed manifestation of property relations. In this respect, urban form should be considered in a relational conception of space. The study departs from the proposition that property relations are the main determinants of the formation of urban space, and private property constitutes the generator of the dynamics and contradictions of urban formation, through a continuous process of fragmentation. For this reason, in the control of urban formation, property rights are the basic element that city planners have to face. Therefore, this study presents a comprehensive framework that integrates the categories of urban morphology with a structural analysis of urban formation process. As the essential unit of capitalist city, &ldquo
production of the parcel as a commodity&rdquo
is elaborated as the core of urban formation process. In this framework, morphogenesis of Yenisehir&ndash
Ankara is analyzed in order to understand its historical transformation with reference to the context of property relations. Its morphological layers are depicted as a product of the contradictory relation between urban planning and property relations. It is seen that the morphogenesis of Yenisehir includes three distinct layers of formation, which are characterized by the gradual domination of commodity production in the formation process of urban space.
