Pedro Lemebel’s opposition to the hegemonic power gets done by the travesty of the name and gender, giving up the father’s name Mardones in favour of the mother’s feminine name. The neo-baroque writing of the neochronicles, which irony characterizes, makes the portrait genre wander over the interview, as many testimonies of an era marked by the violence of the Chilean dictatorship and the beginning of AIDS. His writing covers the seventies and extends to nowadays, and builds an urban counter-culture that the chronicler’s eye catches in every corner of the capital. The author puts himself in the boson of Chilean minorities, among the poor, the transvestites, the prostitutes, the young etc… The distinctive hybridity and generic vagueness of his writing, with its double meaning as both literary genre and identity genre, raise the queries about the genre of the author’s first three books. What is at stake is politics, culture, identity, social life and economy, considering that Lemebel’s neo-chronicle brings a new meaning, new semantics, a new definitions of genders, new reflections, and he constantly re-defines because writing and gender are in perpetual evolution

Despite having often been reduced to the status of lucid and satirical journalist or to that of a polemicist of the Weimar Republic, Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935) yet played a far more intercultural role than it’s been said. He lived in Paris, working as a foreign correspondent from 1924 to 1929 and this period, although rarely studied, had a significant impact on his work. Indeed, at that time, he developed a new type of text which we characterise as « French-German chronicles ». Tucholsly writes about France for a German readership and constantly compares the realities of both societies, thereby pursuing his fight for peace with yet another method- that of striving to bring France and Germany closer together. Our aim is thus to demonstrate how Tucholsky stands fully in line with the long list of French-German mediators. Based on the concepts of cultural transfer and of mediator, our analysis focuses on the study of both the travel book Ein Pyrenäenbuch and of articles and poems dating from that period which have a Franco-German dimension. It eventually reveals that Tucholsky depicted France with partiality and that his writing strategy sways between provoking the reader and inciting him or her to play an active role.Added to those two major dimensions which make the chronicles unique, the last and strong axis of the thesis revolves around the ambivalence and limits that such a mediation work imply

This thesis is assigned, as the terms and conditions of research to define specific modes of appearance and operation of the epic in the historical Chronicle and the songs of exaltation in honour of Emperor Bakari II, represented as the "discoverer" of America before Columbus. The text is a bilingual version consisting of a transcript in Mandinka language and a French translation. Singing its achievements, the griot is the praise of the heroic qualities of the character and nature of the emotions aroused by his daring to go to the onslaught of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. A text that presents itself as a simple appearance, epic intonation is assigned to it even though it can be called 'neo epic’. Certainly the epic was necessary with regard to the choice of an aesthetic of orality that allows to establish 'unadorned' history, the heroic and wonderful deeds. We have here, the definition of epic registry and noble style associated with it in the rhetoric, which is followed by the work. First of all, we have tried to look on the Foundation of the Mande, from the origins to the advent of Sundiata Keita, founder of the empire and the social composition and the political organization of the Mali Empire. This thesis confirms, along with other ethnographic studies, that medieval Mandingo society is organized around three poles strongly hierarchical, endogamous and specialised: the horon, the nyamakala and the jon. Before transcribing malinke language, then translate them into French songs-rhythms of praise of Fa Bukari, we revisited Maghan Sundiata epic cycle which is accompanied by the Chronicle of the Emperor of Mali, Aboubakari II. To conclude, we discussed stylistic and semantic properties that revolve around the figure of the epic poet, poetry form, epic speech, the special rhythmic of epic speech, without concealing the prospects of many research that open in the field of oral literature, in general and the epic of Bakari II, in particular that contains an entire domain to explore

This work which questions the whole of detective stories from the Carvalho series, seen from the angles of the social chronicle and the literary creation, emphasizes the transfiguration of reality through writing. The first part (History of writing) focuses on the reasons of the emergnece of that unexpected genre, the « thriller » genre, as the dictatorship is drawing to a close. There are considered, from the literary evolution of the writer, the passage from a « subnormal » writing to the detective story writing via the American Black novel, and then its surpassing, as well as the choice of narrative mode : poetical realism as an aesthetics of unveiling. The study of Lo literario, second part of Montalban's plan after the chronicle, reveals reading paths, the aesthetics of entertainment being then doubled by a network of significations thrown in more particularly through the relationships that intertextuality establishes between the cinema and literature. Intertextual character if any, mainspring of the representations, both focused upon and focusing, the detective Pepe Carvalho is considered from the point of view of his literary birth, of his problematic identity of the symbolical scope of his biblioclasty and of his role in the series. The second part (From objective reality. . . ) deals with the authenticatable reality which roots the chronicle : places, Barcelona, its geography, its history and its metamorphoses ; the time, the Spain of late Francoism (1972) when the right wing was coming back into power (1996), marked by the cultural, social, economic and political disruptions and by the evolution of the mentalities caused by the passage to democracy. The last but not least part (. . . To imagined reality) shows how reality, used and manipulated, weaves three patterns that are intricately linked – Francoism as a base of the spanish society, the failure of the left wing in its desire to change the world, the urban world as an alienating system – in fictions that try to explain History
François, Noémie. "Concha Alós , une remise en lumière nécessaire." Thesis, Pau, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PAUU1001.
This thesis aims at placing the writer Concha Alós (1922-2011) in the limelight again and at reevaluating her production. As a writer revealed under Franco’s regime, she received an important media and cultural recognition in the 60s and 70s but suffers today from an almost general indifference. The purpose of this PhD dissertation is to provide – for the first time – a comprehensive study of Concha Alós’s personal and professional path and, in a more fine-grained way, her aesthetic work. After a careful review of a large number of documents (published or not, edited, etc.) and private archives, I retrace the trajectory of a Spanish woman writer in a country shackled by dictatorship, position her amongst her contemporaries, determine the reasons for her oblivion and analyze her productions which appear under the form of narratives, newspaper articles and scenarios. The study’s aim is to update our knowledge of a committed woman, whose caustic pen, direct style and powerful themes today deserve to be rehabilitated

The coming of the digital age is not without its effects on our literary practices: it transforms our way of telling a story, and of creating, conceiving, diffusing and especially reading a work. This master’s thesis is mostly interested in this last upheaval: the relation between the reader and the work. If it seems agreed today that the modalities of reading are complexified or even renewed when they take place in a digital context, in particular through a more explicit interaction with the reading device, this apparent appropriation of the text doesn’t necessarily lead to a gain of freedom for the reader. On the contrary, this thesis postulates that the notion of constraint is relevant to approach the act of digital reading, reverberating in a particularly intense manner on various levels (device, mechanics, and text) of the form and functioning of works, which circumscribe the reader to limited, controlled, predetermined and less effective gestures. The goal is to study the manifestations of the constraint of reading by analyzing digital narrative fictions: Déprise, The Stanley Parable and Chronique(s) d’Abîme. These works belong to different practices (web fiction, video game, interactive fiction on mobile devices) that cut across several media (computer, tablet, smartphone). They thus seem representative of the diversity of digital narrative productions, while sharing the same feature: the constraining dimension of their reading. Key words: digital literature, constraint, reading in a digital context, interactivity, digital narrative fictions, video game, web fiction, interactive fiction on mobile devices, agency, manipulation gestures, discourse, control, freedom.

The subject of this research is about the Nahda, as conceived and built up by its actors-journalists in Egypt during the 19th century. Starting from the writings of a pioneer of this social movement, Ibrâhîm Al-Muwaylihî, and going through critical and literary analysis of his realistic and fictional published discourses, this research is, on the one hand, revisiting the history of this cultural Arab renaissance from a journalistic point of view and is, on the other hand, capturing the relationship between press and literature for a better understanding of how modern Arab literature was born and evolved. A specific emphasis is placed on defining role of the periodical literary and press as a supporting and propagating the Nahda. By reviewing leading, socio-political speeches and socio-satirical stories published at installments, this research makes an inventory of the dominant topics and offers conclusions about one of the largest newspapers of the Nahda, Misbâh Al-Sarq, a historical and political work, Mâ Hunâlik, and a new literary work, Mir'ât al-Âlam, all created by Ibrâhîm Al-Muwaylihî. The latter work is quoted, analyzed and compared with other newspapers. This research offers a synthesis of important Nahda questions about the press and the literature of an era, tracks and traces its history as witnessed by its actor-journalists, including their views about relations between the East and the West and mutations in the Arab and Muslim world. It offers an insight into a new Arabic literary style born in the press, analyzes the transmutation of the maqâma into a social novel and summarizes the Muwaylihi's Nahda thoughts, which remain valid in this 21th century

Based on a corpus of 436 texts of German book reviews published in five newspapers of non-specialized press during the first half of the year 2012, this study investigates the discourse of German literary criticism. To try and identify constituent characteristics of the review, three areas of research are envisaged: the textual, discursive and metatexual perspectives. Traditionally conceived with regards to function, the notion of text is considered here in terms of shape. By considering the notions of sequences and periods, developed within the text linguistics, this study identifies a reservoir of forms which underpin the composition and the configuration of the reviews. Besides, the discursive perspective allows us to get a sense the speaking subject of the reviews as a transition for speech and knowledge. The literary critic actually benefits from putting himself in an institutional position that marks his/her relation to knowledge in order to have the best influence on the reader. The challenge is to identify possible linguistic markers which serve this argumentative approach. Finally, the metatextual perspective obliges us to conceive the review in its relationship with the source text. The book review is a real dialogue with the criticized book, the criticism explicitly exploits strategies borrowed from the literary and journalistic speeches. Textual processes of repetition such as reformulation, quotation, allusion or contamination threat to undermine the metatext into a hypertext. These three axes allow to approach the review as a genre, in the interface between text and discourse. The results confirm the idea that the genre must be approached not in a static way, as a list of invariants, but in a dynamic way, as the product of the interference of several discursive genres. Finally, what is at stake is a better understanding of the production and of the reception of the reviews
Marcillaud-Authier, Sandrine.
Antoine Blondin's personality and career (1922-1991) have fostered an abundant and puzzling mythology. A prolific and humorous chronicler readily partial to the jubilatory uses of language, and a disconcerting novelist who proves in turns light-hearted and grave in his inventiveness, Blondin combines the contrasted images of a self-demanding stylist and of a man torn between protest and passionate brotherhood, in a now playful, now tragic posture. Involved since the early 1950’s in the young right-wing movement with the Hussards’ Group (which included Roger Nimier, Jacques Laurent and Michel Déon), he took an active part in the heated debate over the issue of commitment. The bulk of the insolent post-war polemist’s work is strikingly unusual. Asserting itself against the so-called “serious-minded” approach, its aesthetics shows nonetheless a unity of its own. It provides a representation of the world in which discrepancy and distanciation appear as dominant features. Transgression rules forms and moods, notably making wildly emancipated fiction a tool for probing into reality by drawing on the resources of the preposterous and the unexpected. Reduced to farcical inanity, the world totters to disintegration along the dead ends of existential achievement. Subversion of discourse, with its corroding effects, thus opens on to the compensations afforded by imagination and to the possibility of a poetic approach. The magical powers of transfiguration perseveringly develop a “Merveilleux Humain” in which the gradual stages of a spiritual quest can be detected, somewhere between the glorifying of one’s fellowmen and utter despair

Our study proposes first a thematic then a structural reading of cent nouvelles nouvelles by philippe de vigneulles (1471-1528), a metz droper. His work, the product of the oral middle-class culture of the early 16th century, may be understood in the light of his "historical" works: on autobiographical narrative (journal) and a chronicle of metz. After having analysed the particular features of each of the narratives (which concord in their approach to reality) and resolved the problems of method raised during their reading (chapter 1), the events chronicled in metz were re-examined in the light of the author's view of his own society (chapter 2). The analysis of themes and motifs in the narratives shows that their author adopts the values present in his historical works, but using the comic mode. He contests neither the social hierarchy nor the socio-economic and political systems of his day. He does however imagine a nonaggressive society freed from any supernatural manifestation: the dream of the merchant class on its quest for material wealth and new worlds to conquer. Chapter 4 studies the formal aspects of nouvelles nouvelles in two phases: an exploration of the semantic field "nouvelle" in philippe's historical work (354 occurences) leads to the identification of a set structure, the embryonic, archetypal structure of the literary narratives. Two functions, termed "conjonctural analysis of a situation" and "choice of on immediate riposte", appearing systematically and often high-lighted by various stylistic effects, confer a didactic import on the work; philippe's stories are a series of case studies, profane "exempla", lessons in social sciences. Despite their still medieval flavour, they express their author's belief in man, at a cultural level as yet unaffected by the humanist enlightement

In the second half of the fifteenth century, David Aubert’s Croniques et conquestes de Charlemaine, Jean Bagnyon’s Histoire de Charlemagne and the anonymous Cronique associee tried to collect and compile the stories linked to Charlemagne. Composed in various circles, when both rewriting in prose and Charlemagne himself were popular, these compilations recycled epic songs and chronicles written in the previous centuries to piece together a coherent story of this character. What results is either a princely biography or a cyclic fragment that is interrupted when the emperor dies. The prose form revives these stories whose structure and scope were novel but whose material had become trite after being compiled again and again. By studying the historical context, and especially by comparing the composition, narrative structure and presentation of different versions, I wish to show how the compilation reflects a critical and organized reading which epitomizes the new practices of the late Middle Ages. The rewriting process bears its own guidelines, depending on a reading public who is familiar with literary tradition: the purple patches, such as the Roncesvalles episode, are rewritten, while other passages are sorted away or forgotten, in keeping with the objective of each specific work. Through compilation, texts are either recognized or abandoned, blended within the new unit. At the heart of my investigation is the twofold dynamic of the fixation and malleability of memory, fashioned in the Middle Ages as a modality of literary activity. A transcript of the Cronique associee (ms Arsenal 3324) is appended to the dissertation in order to make this text more readily accessible

Studies about female characters in Stendhal’s and Mérimée’s works are in no doubt numerous. However, the aim of our work is to highlight the relationship between these authors and the theories that prevailed from the eighteenth century onwards. We refer in particular to both the four temperaments theory and the climate the theory and their influence on the creation of female characters, protagonists in the stories we chose for our corpus: the Chroniques italiennes of Stendhal and the shorts stories La Vénus d’Ille, Colomba and Carmen of Mérimée. Our purpose is to unveil a new aspect of the female problematic by analysing Southern Europe woman human type observed from the perspective of the influence of the above-mentioned theories. We also linked the form chosen by the two writers (short story, little novel) with the themes they address and the effect they want to produce on the reader. To which extent is the short story type contributing to the effect of violence supposed to be produced by the depiction of the South? Short stories serve the efficiency of a purpose at the same time aesthetic, ethnological and ethical. This study consists of three parts. First of all, we examine the the evolution of both four temperaments theory and climate theory, as well as the eighteenth, beginning of the nineteenth century historical and cultural background which also influences Stendhal and Mérimée literary creation. Secondly, we reflect upon Stendhal’s and Mérimée’s poetics in relation to short stories. Finally, we analyse the female characters in relation to the preliminary studies previously mentioned
Lavoie-Coutu, Isabelle.
In our study, we focus on demonstrating that Arthur Buies presents himself as a witness of a form of modernity in his chronicles on the country published in the 1870's in three collections. We lean on the idea that he would observe approximately the same characteristics in his rural chronicles as in his urban chronicles. We also think that the 'literary postures' (Jérôme Meizoz) adopted by Buies allow him to pass on - in a formal way - his vision of modernity. By the research's end, it stands out that Buies, aware of the concept of modernity, judges that it doesn't inevitably appear in the cities. For Buies, Paris and San Francisco are modern whereas Quebec City is not. Furthermore, for him, there really is a form of modernity in his rural chronicles because he notices in them more or less the same characteristics as the ones he found in the chronicles about Paris and San Francisco. Also, Buies is convinced that the colonization in Quebec stagnates. He comes to this observation when he compares it to the American colonization happening simultaneously. However, he notices some progress regarding Quebec colonization over the decade, but insufficient, according to him, to make up for the absence of a railroad on the northern bank of the St. Lawrence River. Based on our analysis, we conclude that the 'literary postures' chosen by Buies - especially the 'flâneur' and the geographer ones - are figures through which the characteristics of modernity are conveyed within the writing of the chronicles itself.
