Le but de l'étude : réhabiliter un poète australien méconnu et le faire connaitre en France comme appartenant au courant symboliste français. La 1ere partie traite : 1- de la philosophie du poète (part d'originalité, rapports avec le courant de la philosophie allemande) qui est le point de départ de son art. 2- de son mysticisme, des relations qu'il établit entre mysticisme et psychologie, et du caractère anthropologique de ce mysticisme. 3- de l'implantation de sa poésie dans un milieu métaphysique, religieux et mystique par l'examen successif la place du Christ dans sa pensée religieuse, du mythe des origines avec la multiple signification de Lilith, et d'une théorie du divin avancée par le poète ainsi que quelques-uns de ses thèmes associes. -4- des rapports de sa quête poétique avec sa quête du divin. Pour le poète, le mystère divin appréhende par la seule beauté n'est traduisible que par le symbole, d'où son adhésion au courant symboliste par l'intermédiaire de Baudelaire et de Mallarmé. La 2nde partie est consacrée tout d'abord à la définition de l'esthétique du poète qui débouche sur le "silence" des mystiques, puis a la représentation de son univers symbolique, et enfin, a l'étude linguistique de poèmes 1913. La 3eme partie concerne l'australianite du poète, sa contribution à l'héritage australien et les différentes catégories d'images qu'il donne de son pays : images d'un "enfant du pays", d'une terre d'exil et d'adoption, et d'un art transcendant les frontières australiennes
Aim: to restore a misunderstood Australian poet to his proper place and to introduce him to France as belonging to the stream of French symbolism. The 1st part deals with: 1- the poet's philosophy, starting point of his art, its links with German philosophy. 2- His mysticism, the relationship between mysticism and psychology, the anthropological character of such mysticism. 3- The positioning of his poetry in a metaphysical, religious and mystic context. Are examined successively: Christ position in his religious thought, the myth of origins and the multiple meanings of Lilith, a theory of the divine put forward by the poet, and associated themes. -4- The links between his poetic quest and his quest of the divine. For the poet, divine mystery apprehended through beauty alone can be imparted only by the symbol. Hence his belonging to the symbolist stream through Baudelaire and Mallarme. The 2nd part is about the definition of the poet's esthetics which rejoins the "silence" of the mystics, the presentation of his symbolic universe and a linguistic study of poems 1913. The 3rd part concerns the Australian character of his poetry, the poet's contribution to the Australian tradition and the different categories of image his gives of his country: images of his homeland, of a land of exile and adoption, and of an art transcending the Australian frontiers

In this way, human life is being shaped also, beside the earth. The traditional housing fabric, which is the heritage of years of experience and the reflection of the lifestyle of a particular society, is being neglected. In any part of the world, the number of the buildings, resembling each other so much, increases
and most of the time, they lack the values that support the quality of life. Within the scope of this thesis, first of all, Alexander&
#8217
s definition of order, theories of wholeness and centers, concept of living structure are studied. Then, traditional Kastamonu houses are analyzed, both visually and spatially
and properties that make a living structure are examined. The relation between living structure and expression of self and the importance of belonging to own time and place are put forward. Then, how different centers are united together by the help of these features is seen. This study helps to understand, how to create more sensitive environments to live by studying and understanding traditional housing concepts before losing them totally. Moreover, it emphasizes the values of traditional Kastamonu houses, which support the quality of life.

The title of this composition "Christopher in the Desert" was stipulated after the nickname of the student residence of the University of Arizona, "Christopher City," where I have stayed during my study at the school. It also represents the geographical environments of the city of Tucson, Arizona. The orchestration for this composition is considerably conventional which is consist of paired winds with solo English horn and tuba, five part strings, and timpani. Frequently, solos and solo ensembles are employed intentionally to build a differentiated atmosphere from the forceful orchestra, The characteristically effective instrumentation of Claude Debussy (1862--1918), and Bela Bartok's (1881--1945) interest informal dimensions and developmental procedures of his own compositional style influenced this work. To organize this three movement composition in a symmetrical attitude, the first and third movement share several common components, especially pitch layouts, while the second movement keeps the most independent and distinctive flowing demeanor. The pitch materials interact both in horizontal and vertical orientations, and the directions and contours of the melodic lines are cautiously controlled to develop and extend the possibilities in the circumstance of unity of the entire piece. Harmonically, quintal and quartal chords are frequently employed in several points to slacken the tensions which have been built, while pentatonic scale-oriented harmonies dominate the harmonic realms of the composition.

The thesis examines and improves upon the properties of both fairness and decentralisation in modern cryptocurrencies, re-examining public key infrastructure, client puzzles and useful proofs of work in the blockchain context. The thesis also develops a framework construction for a novel directed-acyclic-graph-based cryptocurrency scheme. This framework represents a major result, being both the first academic and practically realisable proposal for using directed acyclic graphs in decentralised cryptocurrencies.

At present the Church is confronted by two major problems, specifically, its marginalization within Western society, and the difficulty of transmitting the faith to the young. This confusion has had a particularly severe impact on Catholics within English-speaking countries such as Australia, where a dominant secularized Protestant culture has repudiated its Catholic roots. Catholics have had limited opportunities to appreciate the depth and richness of their heritage or to understand the forms and substance of a flourishing Catholic culture. There have been two major responses to the dilemma of the Church’s interaction with modern culture. The first, which predominated before 1960, drew largely upon neo-scholastic philosophy, a major proponent of which was the prominent French Catholic intellectual, Jacques Maritain (1882-1973). However, a sole reliance on this approach has proved unsatisfactory in countries such as Australia, where the Catholic cultural and historical understandings remained underdeveloped. The second major response, which has dominated the period since the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), has interpreted the term aggiornamento to mean accommodation by the Church to the modern world. This response has been particularly problematic for Catholics in Australia, which has experienced substantial social and cultural changes in the last forty years. Consequently, major declines in religious practice and the marginalization of Christian understandings and beliefs within the broader society are indicative of a need for new ways to respond to modern culture and the challenge of secularization. Since the early 1970s, Communio scholars have explored the relationship between theology and culture. Their perspectives have also led to a renewed awareness of the importance of tradition, memory and history in understanding culture. This thesis will build on this renewed awareness, to argue that the confusion about the rôle of culture has resulted from a failure to recognize the challenge posed by modernity’s breach with the Christian past, and the accompanying distortion of the historical narrative. A solution to these difficulties draws upon the historical and cultural understandings of the English Catholic historian, Christopher Dawson (1889-1970). He sought to emphasize the essential quality of the spiritual dimension in culture and history. In particular, Dawson’s understanding that religion forms culture gave him a unique insight into the importance of memory and tradition in the survival of a culture. Thus, his work addressed such themes as the rôle of Christianity in forming the West, and the need to analyse the forms and substance of a Christian culture. During the 1950s, Dawson became increasingly convinced of the importance of education in transmitting the spiritual and cultural heritage of society. He advocated the idea of a Christian culture course that would teach students about their Christian past and help them to understand that religion provides the most vital aspect of society. In particular, this thesis will propose that Dawson’s historical and educational framework is an important way to respond to the amnesia of modern culture and to transmit the faith to the next generation. Specifically, this thesis will use the Dawsonian perspective as well as the cultural analysis of the Communio school, as a means to focus on the importance of culture, history, the European heritage and education, in order to argue for new catechetical and educational directions. A focus on Europe would benefit Australia not only because it has a European heritage, but because it would allow a greater knowledge of a culture that was formed by Christianity, and of the challenge that arises from a secularization of the Christian ethos. The Dawsonian proposal for a Christian culture course provides an alternative to historical and cultural perspectives that are based on secular and Whig versions of history. Instead of focusing on the three-fold division of history into Ancient, Medieval and Modern eras, Dawson’s course developed an understanding of the impact of Christianity by developing a knowledge of six stages of Christian culture: The Apostolic Age; the Patristic Age; the Formation of Western Christendom; the High Middle Ages; Divided Christendom, after the Reformation; and finally, Secularized Christendom. Thus, the Dawsonian course with its emphasis on the formative rôle of Christian culture within Western society is an important means to address the problems of the marginalization of the Church, and the urgent need to find more effective ways to transmit the faith to the next generation.

The purpose of the study is to establish the critical need for stage action in order to understand fully the theme of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. Marlowe's primary intent is to invert the morality play, illustrating the distortions and ambiguities of a systematized religion and to establish the human dilemma when man is faced with moral choices. To illustrate this inversion, Marlowe uses emblematic action for an effect opposite to that of the traditional moralities: Often this action goes beyond the emblem, becoming a metaphor for Marlowe's theme, man as a victim, conflicting within himself and within the system which governs his morality.Chapter one introduces this theme and the crucial need for staging Marlowe's ideas. The first chapter also establishes a compromise of the textual problems inherent within any study of Doctor Faustus. Since the study argues that audience reaction is important to Marlowe's intent, attention is paid to how audience response governs the play's interpretation.Chapter two is a critical review of the historical staging practices which must be considered when studying the dramatic text. Included are stage size, costuming, and special effects.Chapter three is the advancement of the thesis in a scene by scene analysis of the text with special attention to the action as metaphor. Considered is how audience reaction represents part of Marlowe's purpose; the increasing tension of the audience furthers Marlowe's concept of the ambiguities present when humans are faced with moral choices. This purpose is traced scene by scene with specific attention to how it is metaphorically portrayed on stage.Chapter four is separate as a director's book, with the text reproduced, together with the researcher's marginal notes on specific blocking and with footnotes emplacing and expanding on the metaphorical action as it appears in the text.

RESUMO: Esta dissertação ocupa-se do percurso e da obra do compositor Christopher Bochmann, particularmente duma das obras de sua autoria, Essay IX para trompete solo. Esta pertence a um conjunto de dezasseis peças para instrumentos solo intituladas Essays, visando cada uma as características técnicas do instrumento a que se destina e obedecendo a uma série de sons, que assim contribui para definir a identidade de cada peça. Diretor de orquestra, pedagogo e compositor, Christopher Bochmann estudou em Inglaterra até aos dezasseis anos, alternando a sua vida como estudante entre Paris e Inglaterra durante dois anos. Em 1978, fixou-se no Brasil, onde lecionou as disciplinas de Harmonia, Contraponto e Análise Musical, tendo ali permanecido durante alguns anos até vir para Portugal. Aqui, lecionou na Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, integrando actualmente o corpo docente do Departamento de Música da Universidade de Évora. Composto em 1993, Essay IX não foi escrito para nenhum trompetista em particular. Destinada à trompete solo, estrutura-se a partir da série de Fibonacci, que neste caso seria mais adequadamente chamada sequência de Fibonacci, visto que o Essay IX se organiza efetivamente segundo uma sequência, ou série de sons, e não segundo os princípios do serialismo atonal; ABSRACT: This dissertation refers to the path and work of composer Christopher Bochmann, especially focusing on his Essay IX for solo trumpet. This piece is part of a set of sixteen instrumental works named Essays, in which each of the respective instrument's characteristics is approached, as well as obeying a tonal series, thus contributing to define the identity of each of the pieces. A conductor, pedagogue and composer, Christopher Bochmann studied in England until he reached sixteen years of age. He continued to study in Paris, where he stayed for two years, and completing his studies with Richard Roney Bennet. In 1978, Bochmann moved to Brazil, where he taught courses on Harmony, Counterpoint and Musical Analysis, before coming to Portugal a few years after. In Portugal he taught at Escola Superior de Música e Educação de Lisboa and now integrates the teaching staff of the Universidade de Évora music department. Composed in 1993, Essay IX was not written for any trumpet player in particular. This work, conceived for solo trumpet, is structured according to the Fibonacci series, which in this case would be more adequately referred to as the Fibonacci sequence, since Essay IX is actually set up according to a sequence, or tonal course, and not according to the principles of atonal serialism.

This thesis examined the physical, biological and technological factors influencing the biomechanical properties of human placental tissue in utero. It specifically investigated changes in placental stiffness, measured via ultrasound elastography throughout the third trimester. The thesis analysed the critical maternal and fetal factors that impact ultrasound elastography measures and reported on system parameters that can be optimised for reliable results. Knowledge gained in this thesis is essential to developing placental elastography as a clinical tool to diagnose placental dysfunction.

The material presented in this thesis may be viewed as comprising two key parts, the first part concerns batch cryptography specifically, whilst the second deals with how this form of cryptography may be applied to security related applications such as electronic cash for improving efficiency of the protocols. The objective of batch cryptography is to devise more efficient primitive cryptographic protocols. In general, these primitives make use of some property such as homomorphism to perform a computationally expensive operation on a collective input set. The idea is to amortise an expensive operation, such as modular exponentiation, over the input. Most of the research work in this field has concentrated on its employment as a batch verifier of digital signatures. It is shown that several new attacks may be launched against these published schemes as some weaknesses are exposed. Another common use of batch cryptography is the simultaneous generation of digital signatures. There is significantly less previous work on this area, and the present schemes have some limited use in practical applications. Several new batch signatures schemes are introduced that improve upon the existing techniques and some practical uses are illustrated. Electronic cash is a technology that demands complex protocols in order to furnish several security properties. These typically include anonymity, traceability of a double spender, and off-line payment features. Presently, the most efficient schemes make use of coin divisibility to withdraw one large financial amount that may be progressively spent with one or more merchants. Several new cash schemes are introduced here that make use of batch cryptography for improving the withdrawal, payment, and deposit of electronic coins. The devised schemes apply both to the batch signature and verification techniques introduced, demonstrating improved performance over the contemporary divisible based structures. The solutions also provide an alternative paradigm for the construction of electronic cash systems. Whilst electronic cash is used as the vehicle for demonstrating the relevance of batch cryptography to security related applications, the applicability of the techniques introduced extends well beyond this.

Christopher Lasch (1932-1994) est un historien et un critique social américain connu pour ses ouvrages portant sur la politique et la culture américaines au XXème siècle. Cette thèse cherche à éclairer sa présentation de l’idée de progrès et de ses conséquences pour la polis américaine. Nous interprétons la pensée de Lasch comme un « libéralisme tragique », en voulant signifier par-là que l’historien américain voit une tension non résolue entre le libéralisme politique et l’idée de progrès. Pour présenter ce constat, nous abordons tout d’abord la genèse de cette formulation critique de l’idée de progrès en présentant une succincte biographie intellectuelle de Lasch. Nous examinons, ensuite, l’histoire que Lasch fait de l’idée de progrès dans son maître ouvrage de 1991 intitulé, The True and Only Heaven: Progress and Its Critics. Nous analysons enfin les conséquences sur la vie politique et sociale des démocraties libérales contemporaines que Lasch analyse à la suite de ce qu’il juge être l’expansion et le triomphe sans partage de l’idée de progrès dans nos sociétés. Ce dernier point nous permettra d’illustrer en quoi la conception laschienne du libéralisme est, à notre avis, tragique.

Film noir has returned as a commercially attractive genre in the last ten years following the success of Pulp Fiction. This thesis discusses the differences of style and content and reasons for these differences between the present incarnation of film noir and its predecessors. As a director whose three feature films to date all contain noir elements, the work of Christopher Nolan is contextualized with that of his contemporaries while the purpose of his expression of these elements is also considered.

This dissertation politically analyses the principles of literary evaluation (here called "axiology") argued and applied by the English critics Christopher Caudwell, Raymond Williams, and Terry Eagleton. The paradoxical fact that all three claim to be working within a Marxist framework while producing mutually divergent rationales for literary evaluation prompts a detailed examination of Marx and Engels. Moreover, since Caudwell and Eagleton acknowledge Leninism to be Marxism, and, further, since Eagleton and I both in our own ways argue that Trotskyism--as opposed to Stalinism--is the continuator of Leninism, the evaluative methods of Lenin and Trotsky also become relevant. Examined in light of that revolutionary tradition, however, and in view of the (English) critics' high political self-consciousness, the latter's principles of "literary" evaluation reveal definitive political differences between each other and with Marxism itself, centrally over the question of organised action. Thus, each of the chapters on the English critics begins with an examination of the chosen critic's purely political profile and its relationship to his general theory of literature. Next, I show how the contradictions of his "axiology" express those of his politics. Finally, with Hardy as a focus, I show the influence of each critic's political logic on his particular "literary" assessment of individual authors and texts. The heterogeneity of these critics' evaluations of Hardy, the close correspondence of each critic's general evaluative principles to his political beliefs, and the non-Marxist nature of those beliefs themselves all concretely suggest that none of the three English critics is strictly a Marxist. I do not know whether a genuinely Marxist axiology is inevitable; however, I do admit such a phenomenon as a logical possibility. In any case, I argue, this possibility will never be realised unless aspiring Marxist axiologists seek to match their usually extensive knowledge of literature with an active interest in making international proletarian revolution happen. And, since it can only happen if it is organised, the "Marxist" axiologist without such an orientation will be merely an axiologist without Marxism.

The purpose of this essay is to explore the commissioning process of a wind ensemble piece by notable composer Christopher Rouse, and its significance to the wind ensemble repertoire. This essay will use the University of Miami Frost Wind Ensemble and Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds as the primary example. This discussion will provide an extensive background review of Christopher Rouse's early musical experience and life's accomplishments. It will focus on his creative process and document the performance preparation of Wolf Rounds as experienced by the Frost Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor Gary D. Green. The final part of this essay will investigate the compositional insight of Wolf Rounds as well as the inspiration and motivation of Rouse to write for the wind ensemble genre. While Rouse has written for many different types of ensembles, this will be his first published addition to the wind repertoire. Wolf Rounds was chosen as the primary composition because of its significance to the composer as his first composition for winds and percussion.
