Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta como objeto de estudo o grupo indígena Guaná-Aruák, denominado Kinikinau, que hoje vive na Aldeia de São João, em Mato Grosso do Sul, e que não obstante ter sido considerado extinto na primeira metade do século XX prossegue com a sua existência. Defende a tese de que essa persistência se deve à existência de uma estrutura geral de tendências e disposições apresentadas pelos povos Chané-Guaná, a que pertencem, materializadas nas situações sócio-históricas do contato, que concorreu para a sua continuidade ao longo do tempo e para a sua inserção na historia do extremo-oeste brasileiro, dada a forma como conceberam e construíram suas relações com o seu entorno. Pretende, também, demonstrar que o "desaparecimento" do grupo constituiu-se como um produto histórico e teórico que se esfacelou frente à presença viva do grupo na sociedade brasileira que invalidou todos os prognósticos pessimistas quanto à sua permanência, revelando uma maneira de se ser índio nestes dias propícios, embora difíceis, as reafirmações dos povos indígenas no Brasil. Trata-se, especificamente, de se historiar a constituição dos Kinikinau enquanto uma formação sócio-indígena, identificando-se os lugares e espaços a partir dos quais se deu aquele processo, e as percepções daquele grupo em relação aos eventos que os envolveram no interior de uma sociedade mais ampla. Do ponto de vista da construção teórica e metodológica, o texto usufrui de renovadas concepções, tais como as de cultura, habitus e apropriação que tem sido utilizadas nas contemporâneas abordagens dos povos indígenas, que incluem as suas percepções e adotam uma perspectiva histórica, permitindo uma reconstrução que escapa da historia vista sob uma única perspectiva e voz. Espera-se ter incluído os Kinikinau nesse tipo de narrativa, considerando-se o tempo da longa duração, mostrando algumas dimensões sócio-históricas e políticas da articulação que construíram com a sociedade envolvente, sob a forma que e intrinsicamente significativa para eles. A pesquisa é baseada em fontes escritas e em relatos dos Kinikinau da Aldeia de São João coletados entre maio de 2009 e setembro de 2010. Os dados obtidos sugerem a permanência de uma estrutura geral de tendências e princípios que orientam as praticas sociais do grupo, traduzidas em uma política de aliança e de convívio com a sociedade envolvente. A contribuição geral pretendida neste trabalho é a de ter oferecido uma fração de conhecimento sobre a história dos antepassados dos Kinikinau e do presente embate que travam para serem plenamente reconhecidos pela sociedade brasileira, que possa servir ao estabelecimento de relações mais generosas com esse grupo que historicamente recorre à aliança com a sociedade mais ampla visando a sua continuidade
Abstract: The Brazilian indigenous group Guaná-Aruák called Kinikinau, in Sao Joao village, Mato Grosso do Sul, were considered extinct in the first half of the XX century. This thesis shows that the group's "disappearance", which became a historic and theoretical product, shattered, in face of its live presence among the Brazilian society. Thus, invalidating all pessimistic prognoses as to its permanence and revealed an indigenous way of being in these favorable days, although difficult, as to self-determination of the Brazilian indigenous people. The paper defends that the Chane- Guana's people perseverance is due to the existence of general framework of the tendencies and dispositions between them and materialized through the social-historic situations of contact. These contacts occurred as a result of the way these relations were conceived and contributed around them, in order to permit its endurance along the time and its insertion in the history of Brazil's extreme-west region. It deals specifically with the Kinikinau constitution of its historical, social-indigenous formation, identifying the spaces and places in which the process occurred, and the group awareness of the events that involved them within a broader society. The theoretical foundation is drawn from updated conceptions such as culture, habitus andappropriation used in the contemporary approaches of the indigenous people, which include their perceptions and adopts a historical perspective that allows its reconstruction beyond the one way view and voice of history. These theoretical perceptions permit including the Kinikinau in this kind of narrative, considering the length of time, and also showing the social-historical and political articulation that they built with the surrounding society, which is intrinsically meaningful to them. The research is based on written documents and on accounts given by the Kinikinau from Sao Joao collected from May 2009 to September 2010. The data suggests the permanency of a general structure of tendencies and principals which orientates their social practice, that is, a policy of alliance and relationships with other groups. Eventually, the overall contribution that we wish to propose is to have offered a fraction of knowledge about the history of the forefathers of Kinikinau and their present endeavor to be fully recognized by the Brazilian society. May it also serve to establish a more generous relation with this group, who have strived to continuity historically by referred to an alliance with the larger society

One may approach the Kinikinau through its pottery. Looking to give visibility to their existence, this indigenous people from the Paraguayan Chaco, presently installed in the state Mato Grosso do Sulk, created and recreated survival strategies not to be erased from their own history, receiving in recent times an official recognition that had been once denied. The pottery produced currently by their women, is an example of the strategy driven by them to make it less invisible in the context of indigenous peoples of Mato Grosso do Sul. Without land of their own, living for nearly a century on lands of others for years such as the Kadiwéu Indian Reserve - the Kinikinau people were discovered to be Chané-Guaná or Terena. Nowadays, a small portion of the population struggle for an identity that might be legitimately Kinikinau. This study aims to discuss the aspects that led to the alleged disappearance of the Kinikinau looking for reference in ethnological literature of the twentieth century aiming to partially map their territorial dislocations both in past and present, as well as the intersocietal relations established with the Mbayá-Guaicuru people and finally exploring the role of its pottery as a material evidence that consolidates them their own existence today
Foi através da cerâmica que se chegou aos Kinikinau. Procurando dar visibilidade à sua existência, este povo indígena proveniente do Chaco Paraguaio, hoje instalado em Mato Grosso do Sul, criou e recriou estratégias de sobrevivência para não ser apagado de sua própria história, obtendo em tempos recentes um reconhecimento que lhe havia sido negado. A cerâmica elaborada atualmente por suas mulheres é um exemplo da estratégia acionada por este povo para se fazer menos invisível no contexto das populações indígenas de Mato Grosso do Sul. Sem uma terra própria, vivendo há aproximadamente um século em terras alheias, como, por exemplo, na Reserva Indígena Kadiwéu, os Kinikinau foram referenciados como Chané-Guaná ou Terena. Nos dias de hoje, uma pequena parcela de sua população luta por uma identificação que seja legitimamente Kinikinau. Este estudo visa problematizar aspectos que levaram ao suposto desaparecimento dos Kinikinau, conforme bibliografia etnológica do século XX, procurando percorrer parcialmente seus deslocamentos territoriais, no passado e presente, as relações intersocietárias estabelecidas com os povos Mbayá-Guaicuru e, finalmente, o papel da cerâmica enquanto evidência material que comprova a sua existência nos dias atuais

The subject of this dissertation was the analysis of the influence of selected breeding dairy elements on the technological properties of their milk. The monitoring took place from October 2012 to October 2013 (53 weeks) for a total of six milk suppliers within the Vysočina Region. During the experiment, a total of 318 milk analyzes were analyzed in the Agricultural and Analytical Laboratory in Pribina Pribyslav and 172 sample analyzes in the CL (Central Laboratory) Buštěhrad. The breeding environment has been monitored continuously, in particular in stables and temperature and relative humidity outside the stables. The observed parameters of the breeding environment were the temperature in the stable, the outside temperature for comparison and the relative humidity. Milk suppliers were selected based on the breed dairy breed, dairy cradle and milking method. It has been shown that the milking method of dairy cows (milking parlors, cans and piping) had a statistically proven effect on milk constituents. The fat content was statistically significantly lower in case of milking in milking parlors than milking in pipes and hoses. The content of proteins and dry matter had the opposite trend, ie higher milking milking and lower milking content in cans and pipes. This fact was confirmed in the further analysis of the data, according to the conditions of the housing, when the same situation was repeated. The influence of the accommodation method on the temperature conditions in the stable was demonstrated, and the temperature at the stables was clearly higher, which ultimately had a significant impact on the cheese's curdiness and quality, as described above. The influence of the milking method on the microbial load of milk has been demonstrated. The lowest values were recorded during milking in the milking parlor, either CPM (total number of micro-organisms), number of coliform bacteria or SB (number of somatic cells)

「Military Dependents’ Villages」 were an unusual outcome which appearing after the civil battle between National Party and Communist Party in China many years ago. But after peaceful rotation of political parties in power, anti-change Military Dependents’ Villages restructure work push to most high peak, this strange phenomenon deserves to let the people to observe. Under the background of the contemporary politics and economics, “Chong-Ren village”, an old Military Dependents’ Village which located in Wanhua district of Taipei, has been planed for rebuild in the end of 1980s’. Because most residents in Chong-Ren village were military police families from mainland China, but also part of illegal immigrations from the countryside lived in it; those two mutually different cultures lived as symbiosis backgrounds its special. Central and local government forms strategy alliance by this chance to upgrade the south Wanhua area. By the political view, it tests how the restructure works could be achieved in the competition between government and opposite parties. By the social view, to see how the rebuild of Chong-Ren village can improve the environment of south Wanhua area, also formed and constructed the high-quality living quarter of the youth park; from the cultural side, to see how Military Dependents’ Villages culture can be survived in those few cases of rebuild on the same basement, and continue this Taiwanese history in special cultural outcome.

Where is the future of historic districts? It is a space problem worth deliberating for Taiwan, a country that is undergoing rapid transformation. Men’s fickle in affection has resulted in congestion of new structures in this artificial urban environment. The renovations neglecting overall environmental context has gradually eroded the human nature of neighborhood once existed in livelihood. This research analyzes the monumental contextual composition of space in attempt to probe a different perspective in spatial quality and reassess all collective remembrances that are possibly omitted or devastated under the rationality of urban planning. The remembrances of life accumulated by time is the intrinsic identity of the artificial environment, and through an affective aura, as opposing to the hard exterior of structures, cognitive foundation of ideal space in our perception is constructed, and the reality we eagerly pursue is truthfully affected and reflected. The methodology of this research initiates with identification and ‘positioning’ of the remembrance and space scattered throughout the historic districts, so ‘identity’ of the selected space can gradually emerge; along with periodic traditional celebrations, the locality of the environment is expected to be reinforced, and the remembrance and identification of the lives in those districts embedded in our hearts can be recalled. Then, the concept of ‘diachrony’ is introduced to search for synchronous mechanism integrating the modern life and historic districts. In an era where creation leads to destruction, it is necessary for men to respect and preserve the traces of environment that is filled with ancient memories, and extract the intelligence that can improve the existing spatial quality. The ‘familiarity’ from the past allows us to face the changes today with ease, and ‘contrast’ facilitates our recognition of future direction and values of today.

This dissertation focuses on the investigation and discussion of individual artistic creation, for the most part by exploring and examining how the writer transformed his own life experiences, feelings and craft experience into wood carving to express his own individual understanding of those experiences. The author has loved art since childhood, and since his first contact with wood carving as a freshman, he has not stopped carving. What is the attraction in this choice of material? Entering graduate school, through a period of artistic expression and thought, what the writer discovered about the observation and experience of real life? This dissertation is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, “Introduction,” the writer’s growth, education and sources of his artistic creativity are summarized. In the second chapter, “Historical Reflection,” the influence of art history and individual artists on the writer is narrated. In the third chapter, “Sculpture Materials and Creative Technique,” the analysis and choice of materials, the process of wood carving creation, and the various techniques involved are discussed. Chapter 4, “Creative Thinking,” represents the writer’s own creative ideals and considerations of form. Chapter 5, “Form of Works and Explanation of Works” looks over the evolution of the writers’ creative context during his time in graduate school, and then goes on to present an explanation of each piece. Finally, in the “Conclusion,” an assessment is presented and future directions are given. In terms of my thoughts about wood carving, I endow the material with geometric form according to the form of my own creativity. Through the contextual evolution of a series of works, the writer seeks and discovers the things he truly wishes to express and the reasons for his persistence in doing so. At the same time, he writes an examination of his own motives along with directions for further progress.

De origen arawak, el grupo étnico que la literatura amerindia llamó chané se estableció antes de la Conquista en El Chaco occidental, sobre las laderas orientales de los Andes. Allí trabó complejas relaciones interétnicas con otros grupos étnicos de habla guaraní, indígenas chaqueños y luego, en la medida en que se consolidó el proceso de colonización, también con diversos actores criollos: hacendados, patrones de ingenios, militares, misioneros. A través de documentación etnográfica y etnohistórica, se sugiere que el funcionamiento abierto, flexible, maleable e integrador del chamanismo chané lleva la marca de estas múltiples interacciones históricas, lo cual, por otra parte, lo transforma en un lenguaje simbólico ideal para problematizar las situaciones de contacto intercultural.Of Arawak origin, the ethnic group identified as the Chané indigenous group in the Amerindian literature, settled on the eastern slopes of the Andes before the Conquest of the Occidental region or Paraguayan Chaco took place. There, this group engaged in complex inter-ethnic relationships with other Guarani-speaking ethnic groups, Chaco natives, and thereafter, as the colonization process consolidated, with several Creole social agents: landowners, foremen of sugar plantations, the military, and missionaries. Supported by ethnographic and ethno-historical documents, the author suggests that the open, flexible, malleable and integrating organization of Chané shamanism was marked by these multiple historical interactions, thereby becoming an ideal symbolic language to reflect the problems arising from situations of intercultural contact.

There is a (literacy) gap among Malay pre-schoolers – they are not reading at their age level – and more can be done to help affected families so that their preschool children may recognise words, spell, read and make sense of simple sentences. This case study focused on the influence of parental involvement and Information Communication Technology (ICT) on the literacy level of Singapore's Malay pre-schoolers. It started with a discussion on Singapore's state of ICT- readiness, the choice of preschool, access and potential bias, assumptions, delimitations of this study and a review of the literature before discussing the findings and conclusion.
This case study comprised a survey, a documentary analysis, and an analysis of narratives of Malay parents. The Malays are an aboriginal group commonly found in this part of South-east Asia comprising Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore. In fact, the provision of assistance to the Malays is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore.
The case study site is a group of 3 Singapore preschools under the People's Action Party Community Foundation, a large charity. The case study site is representative of preschools serving low-income families. Thirty-one teachers and 48 parents or care-givers of children from these participating pre-schools participated in interviews. Through this case study method, the issues are better understood. Hence, recommendations are made to enhance literacy levels of pre-schoolers among the Malays, who are over-represented among the poor and the under-performers in school.
There is also a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of the case study design. The subject of triangulation was also discussed and especially related issues such as validity and reliability. Triangulation involved the analyses of qualitative data as well as quantitative data. Triangulation involved a documentary analysis relating to parliamentary speeches and media releases from various government bodies, a narrative analysis of interviews with teachers and parents, and a survey questionnaire (quantitative data) completed voluntarily by teachers and parents. The documentary analysis centred on parliamentary speeches on pre-school policies and media releases from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Social and Family Development, and other different data sources such as journal articles and books. The narrative analysis focused on interviews with teachers and parents. The survey questionnaire for teachers was designed to gather information about the level of ICT-readiness among them while the survey questionnaire for parents was designed to gather information about their nature and level of parental involvement with their preschool children.
Broadly speaking, case studies are complex because they generally involved multiple sources of data and consequentially tended to produce large amounts of data for analysis. Nevertheless, with a more in-depth understanding of key questions such as 'why' and 'how', the critical success factors were identified. As was expected, a pattern emerged and several repeated themes surfaced from the narrative analysis. It was also interesting that a pair of somewhat unexpected factors emerged namely 'religious upbringing' and 'religiosity' which were then discussed in the context of how they helped or hindered the literacy development of the Malay pre-school children.
This study also served to illustrate how the case study research method could be used to answer the "why" and "how" research questions. This study concluded that ICT can enhance teaching and learning, if integrated and harnessed appropriately to bring about engaged learning in the preschool environment. It also concluded that more parental involvement in a child's literacy development might not lead to desired results if the parents were still struggling with bread-and-butter issues or if they were not well-equipped with parenting skills. It also briefly demonstrated the technique of discussing the case around a few repeated themes (including religiosity). Finally, this case study made the argument for more initiatives to be carried out upstream, from as early as the preschool years so as to raise the pre-school children's phonemic awareness and literacy, before making suggestions for further research.

Integrated construction of veteran parks have expected to be one of the important tasks for environment improvement among developed countries. There are also some of them in Taiwan have been integrated and constructed continuously. However, there is no stipulating yet for the evaluation standard of urban park green space planning design recently. Therefore, it is still vague for the direction on the improvement of veteran parks. Being adapting to climate warming phenomenon for the global, tends to biodiversity has formed a common consensus. Evaluation system for green building in Taiwan has been put into practice for years, this can be applied to objective quantification of evaluation standard. Hereby, this article is based on Taichung Chong-lun Park veteran and meet the time of integrated construction, in accordance with its existing situation to carry out field investigation lively, accessing to get evaluation value according to the biodiversity index of green building, presenting advises for improving biodiversity based on the evaluated result. Result of investigation shows that standard value of biodiversity index for Park Chong-lun is 55 points, designed value is 43.03 points; therefore, this item for biodiversity index does not fulfill the standard. Within the item of “urban green network”, merely “area ratio of base and green field” gets 40 points which is higher, there are all with 0 point for “peripheral green network system”, “solid green network” and “biological corridors”; within the item of “Small biological habitat”, solely “Green block biological habitat” gets 0.36 points, there are all with 0 point for “Water biological habitat”, “Porous habitat” and " Other small biological habitat”; within the item of “Plant diversity”, “Trees were different”, “Shrubs were different”, “Native plant or moth trap birds” and “Multi-layer hybrid mixed in green”, the sequence of evaluated values are 2.58、0.54、3.95and 0points; within the item of “Soil ecology”, there are all with 0 points for” Topsoil protection”, “Organic Gardening”, “Natural farming”, “Kitchen waste composting” and “Compost leaves”; as to “Lighting pollution”, the evaluated value is -2 .4points; for ” Biological movement disorders”, the evaluated value is -4 points. To suggest ways of improvement in accordance with the items with lower evaluated values; for example, to establish additional biological corridors under the hidden places of trails in order to connect the whole area, to pebble additional ecological pools in order to bank revetment naturally for at least 200 meters; moreover, to add additional openings in order to provide perches for creatures and plant mixed thick woods; to add and plant with more variety of trees and shrubs in order to raise up the discrepancy degree to 20; to adopt duplicated planting design over 30% area of the base; besides, to suggest planting indigenous plants to match with park environment like red cedar, mulberry, common schefflera, water willow, fetid securinega birdseed plants etc. and sky flower, formosanum elderberry, common lantana, blue porterweed butterfly alluring plants etc.. After applying these ways of integrated construction, Park Chong-lun in Taichung will meet the target of biodiversity.

Lin,Chong-Han has been one of the most popular and acclaimed illustrator for magazine supplements since 1979. This study focuses on the Lin,Chong-Han’s learning process of his illustration skills, sources of his inspiration, the belief and style of his illustrations and the techniques by which he, within the constraints of his small pictures, gave way to boundless imagination for his readers. The study adopts a qualitative research method, including in-depth interviews, literature review and Grounded Theory image analysis. The paper draws the following conclusions: First, Lin,Chong-Han’s illustration not only shows his hard working but great command of drawing skills and techniques. Secondly, his inspiration comes from keen observation since his childhood, inner understanding and the pursuit of knowledge in various subject areas. Third, his work, combined with the text and his own creative ideas, often has a lively and realistic feel, incorporating the principle of “Yin-Yang and the Five Elements” and “Mutual Reinforcement and Neutralization”. Last but not the least, his drawings, with the style of both realism and surrealism, also create amazing visual effects through diverse layouts and visual angles.

Abstract The thesis collects the historical documents to present the development of Fa-Yi Chong-De, an I-Kuan Tao group in Taiwan, during 1948-2014, giving a vision of Tao propagation conducted in various ways. The thesis also makes an analysis of the grand event, titled “Passing the Torch of Chong-De to Hundreds of Generations”, held in 2012 in memory of the leader Ms. Chen Hong-zhen on the fifth anniversary of her decease. The event involves 15,000 participants for preparation and almost 2,000 Fa-Yi Chong-De Tao members for the actual performances. It highlights the core value of the organization, so influential that it strengthens the internal structure and unity of Fa-Yi Chong-De, making a lasting impact on its future development. One significant consequence is that it prevents the organization from fragmenting and declining after the decease of its leader. The study adopts the narrative research method. A six-hour film is analyzed to find the theme lines of the program design and the activity content. Then it concludes with the description of the impact of the event on Fa-Yi Chong-De, with the hope that it may serve as references for organizing the future events, exerting the widely-acknowledged cultural strengths of beauty and kindness to stabilize our society and promote world peace. Since ancient times, most people's activities are usually only around the place of residence and rarely leave home. This is because they are only familiar with the environment around them, and they will lose their sense of security if they are away from the place of residence. But some people will stay away from home for food, but they instinctively have a strong sense of direction far away from their place of residence so that they can return to their place of residence accurately. As the scope of activity continues to expand, and the area is increasingly far and more complex, the way in which the intuition is used to identify the direction has not been able to meet the need for travel. They began to pay close attention to changes in the environment and used this experience as a record when they traveled and began to collect.The information gathered in the mind is stored in the mind. Since then, the cognitive map has come into being. Since then, cognitive maps have emerged. Cognitive graph is the most commonly used method for studying spatial cognitive ability of scholars. This study aims to understand the relationship between the spatial cognitive ability and the influencing factors of junior middle and senior school students by analyzing their cognitive map and navigation. It is hoped that through the study of students ' spatial cognitive ability, teachers can develop more appropriate teaching strategies. The object of this study was a small middle and senior school student in a Sanchong area, and the study area was Sanchong area, using Cognitive map and field Pathfinder as the test method. In this study, we found that in the cognitive map, the influence factors are most influenced by age factors , the factors interact with each other; the boy inclines to the path type drawing, while the girl is biased to the landmark type drawing, and the cognitive drawing is closely related to the life experience. In addition, field Pathfinder aspects, sixth grade is better than fourth grade , and the girl is better than the boy in field exploration. Finally, the results show that the subjects had the highest factor of "personal spatial cognition" in the shorter or more familiar path, and the "visual visibility" factor was the lowest.

The process of creating is as to experience spiritual return trip; however, while on the trip it is inevitable to meet intersections, sometimes I stumble on rocks. Yet is my persistence to make sure that, if I am able to step forward, I can reach the destination by surpassing current situation. Creating makes me find out my essence, and also lead my unsettling mind to return trip. Creating makes me find out my essence, and lead my unsettling mind to return trip. On the trip, I record of what I observe and how I feel in the journal, and turn those into symbolling images. Once the images have its logic, my mind recovers gradually and is taken away from incidents. The effect of delineating discourse on me is as same as the extension of creating, making it more concreate to throw myself back to the feelings such as nourish, pause, and joy. This discourse explains the research motivation and intention in introduction, also includes research methods and range. Chapter one: To describe the reasons affecting the forms of painting and analyze the main form of expression. Chapter two: To discover the rules used on the images, and to conduct further research, will focus on three levels iconology from renowned Iconologist, Erwin Panofsky. Chapter three: Managing to find out probable causes that make the meanings different from the paintings created by three contemporary Asian artists. The study on how symbolizing icon its content forms for reference. Chapter four: To analyze the objects their thoughts and stories behind the icons, demonstrating vision and sense of touch by applying two different materials. Chapter five: To divide the development of psychological status when creating into three levels, and elaborate conceptions and analyzations of the works. Experiencing through this researching process, you have to take the good with the bad. The most important is I find back the original intention of painting and the creating direction that moves me. I expect myself to step further, to be more fearless no matter when I create or be on the journey of life in future.

Disturbances affecting ecosystems are becoming more diverse, frequent and intense, resulting in many examples of degraded ecosystems worldwide. Degradation involves fundamental changes to the system's community structure and function, and can have negative implications environmentally, socially and economically. Conditions, processes and management strategies that prompt recovery are therefore desirable, but details remain equivocal. Coral reefs are one such complex, diverse and threatened ecosystem. A primary consequence of coral reef degradation has been the development of alternative benthic conditions, however our understanding of their implications for other aspects of reef assemblages is limited. This thesis aims to understand the role of reef condition in shaping ecological communities and influencing key ecological processes on disturbed coral reefs.
To investigate processes operating in a particular system, it is first important to characterise the extent of its spatial variability. Reefs of the inner Seychelles islands were chosen because they were severely disturbed by the 1998 bleaching event, and now exist in a range of benthic conditions that might be representative of reef conditions elsewhere in the future. In chapter 2, I quantitatively characterised 21 reefs within a 3600 km² area of the inner Seychelles by considering their underlying substrata, benthos, and associated fish assemblages. High variability in benthic composition was found among the reefs, with a gradient from high coral cover (up to 58 %) and high structural complexity to high macroalgae cover (up to 95 %) and low structural complexity at the extremes. This gradient was associated with declining species richness of fishes, reduced diversity of fish functional groups, and lower abundance of corallivorous fishes. Reefs grouping at the extremes of complex coral habitats or low-complexity macroalgal habitats displayed markedly different fish communities, with only two species of benthic invertebrate feeding fishes in greater abundance in the macroalgal habitat. Moreover, much of the variability seems to be independent of fishing pressure, indicating that there are deeper processes involved. These results have negative implications for the continuation of many coral reef ecosystem processes and services if more reefs shift to extremely degraded conditions dominated by macroalgae.
In systems that have suffered local population-extinctions of key organisms (e.g. branching Acropora corals), recruitment to replenish depauperate populations is essential. However, isolated reefs such as the Seychelles may only receive a limited supply. Other potential bottlenecks to re-establishing a thriving coral population include low settlement rates, and high mortality of new recruits or juvenile corals. In chapter 3 I investigated spatial variation in local abundance of scleractinian corals at three distinct life history stages (recruits, juveniles, and adults) on reefs with differing benthic conditions. On rubble-dominated reefs, which were characterised by low cover of macrobenthic organisms and unconsolidated substrata, cover of adult corals was very low compared to coral-dominated reefs despite similar densities of juvenile corals and incoming coral recruits. A bottleneck caused by low juvenile colony survivorship on unconsolidated rubble-dominated reefs is possible. Macroalgal-dominated reefs received the same number of recruits as coral-dominated reefs (i.e. larval supply was not compromised), but these recruits were either unable to settle successfully on the natural substrate, or survive through to their juvenile life stage. The presence of abundant macroalgae on reefs appears to be having detrimental effects on coral replenishment following disturbances. Bottlenecks to recovery of coral assemblages were present on reefs that had shifted to more degraded conditions.
Shifts between alternative ecosystem states often involve alterations to vegetation type and quantity. Herbivory intensity, and the identity of herbivores, is therefore expected to influence the likelihood of such shifts. On coral reefs, assessments of macroalgal herbivory using bioassay experiments are primarily from systems with relatively high coral cover. In chapter 4, I investigated whether the species that remove macroalgae on coral-dominated reefs will still be present and performing significant algal removal on macroalgal-dominated reefs. That is, whether continued functionality can be ensured in degraded systems. Using filmed Sargassum bioassays, I found significantly higher Sargassum biomass loss on coral-dominated reefs. However, once standardised for the availability of macroalgae, the rates of removal were similar between the two reef conditions. Sargassum-assay consumer assemblages differed between reef conditions; nominally grazing herbivores, Siganus puelloides and Chlorurus sordidus, and the browser, Siganus sutor, dominated feeding on coraldominated reefs, whereas browsing herbivores, Naso elegans, N. unicornis, and Leptoscarus vaigiensis prevailed on macroalgal-dominated reefs. It appeared that macroalgal density in the surrounding habitat had a strong influence on the species driving the process of macroalgal removal. This suggests that although the function of macroalgal removal may continue, the species responsible may change with context, differing between systems that are regenerating versus degrading.
Predictions of future ecosystem communities aid management and conservation initiatives yet are currently difficult to provide, especially at local scales. Using patterns in coral reef fish assemblages that are associated with reefs along a continuum of habitat quality, chapter 5 investigated 1) whether observed relationships hold over time, and 2) whether there are particular aspects of benthic change that the fish respond to. Significant and relatively consistent spatial relationships between the two years were identified for three aspects of the fish assemblage – species richness and the abundances of both corallivores and browsing herbivores. However, there was no consistent relationship for the remaining 10 fish assemblage variables. Nevertheless, a reef's trajectory along three different axes of benthic change (coral:macroalgae, cca:sand, other macroalgae:turf) was associated with reciprocal changes in nine (of 13) aspects of the reef fish assemblage. This suggests that while there are spatial patterns in some groups that may be used for predictions, caution should be exercised with many other ecosystem components, as unpredictable behaviour is likely.
My research emphasises the long-term detrimental effects of reef degradation, especially phase shifts to macroalgal-dominance, on important ecological processes. Moreover, the more degraded examples of Seychelles coral reefs (rubble- and macroalgal-dominated) appear to be reinforcing their current condition, developing feedbacks that may be hard to break. The work also highlights areas or time periods where management strategies may be most effective.
