Roppa, Flavio.

Nowadays the world consumption of electrical energy is continuously increasing. More than an half of the produced electricity is consumed by electric motors. In order to cope with the increase in electricity consumption, the use of variable speed motor drives is promoted by energy efficiency regulations in most countries. These motors are able to consume only as much electricity as the application actually needs. They can do this by exploiting inverterization: variable speed drive motors are driven by power semiconductor switches connected in the inverter-leg configuration. They are alternatively switched on and off by the gate driver to generate a pulse width modulated signal on motor phase nodes used to provide the required current to the load. High voltage gate drivers are usually designed to have one single output current level used to charge/discharge the parasitic gate of external power switches to turn them on and off. Driving with a switching system is very efficient, but the dissipation, even if small, is always present and must be taken into account. In recent years, superjunction (SJ) technology has revolutionized the industry of high voltage power devices significantly improving the overall performance/cost ratio of power conversion. SJ devices are able to overcome the trade-off between breakdown voltage and on resistance, better known as the Silicon Limit. However, they are characterized by a non linear Miller capacitance, which causes the switching speed transient to start with very high dV/dt and to finish with a long slow-tail in the last few volts. In standard gate driver, the io+ driving capability is selected to find the best compromise between two opposite constraints: limiting the power dissipation with a fast dV/dt while satisfying conducted and radiated emission constraints with a slow dV/dt. With SJ devices it is not possible to meet this trade-off by simply selecting a fixed io+ value. To drive power switches with high efficiency a new driving strategy to make the whole system working in the optimum self-adjusting operating point for the fast dV/dt portion and to avoid the final slow-tail is presented. The aim of this PhD project is to propose a simple closed-loop solution where no large bandwidth neither discrete elements are required and the non-linearities of the power switching devices are compensated. In this way a controlled dV/dt transient can be achieved optimizing the trade-off between switching losses and conducted and radiated emission constraints. To do so, a linear integrated HV capacitor connected between the low side and the floating high side of the gate driver is used as sensing element. The current required by the charging and discharging of this capacitor during the active switching event is proportional to the dV/dt slope. The gate current is then changed cycle-by-cycle accordingly to the slope detected to reach the target io+ value needed by the power switches and forced in real-time to a very high value to cancel the slow-tail effect. Two silicon were taped-out. A first test chip to validate the sensing circuit and to prove the effectiveness of the core idea. The measurements were very promising: most of the circuit worked as expected. For this reason, a second tape-out was made integrating the sensor in a gate driver environment with some minor modifications to improve the performance and to fix some minor bugs detected with the bench evaluation of the first silicon. The measurements related to the second silicon confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed driving technique for hard-switching inverters stages, even though the device needs further development and validation before it can be widely employed. The details of the circuit design and the complete measurement evaluation of both the two test chips will be deeply discussed in the PhD thesis.

Changes in society have brought forth more diversity in the types of families. Grandparents rearing grandchildren is a situation that is increasing year by year; it is becoming a typical family type nowadays. It is also a social issue. This research analyzes the Grandparent-Grandchildren Issue in Chiu Ko's (Jiu Ge) Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, and investigates the text of the authors' tactics of dealing with subjects of ‘real life’. The first chapter of this paper begins with the motivation and purpose of the study, followed by the report of the research methods and procedures. The second chapter discusses the basic concept of Juvenile Novels, and the history of the Chiu Ko (Jiu Ge) Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, also with the literature review, and relationships in the grandparents-rearing family. The third chapter critically examines the images of grandparent and grandchild in the novels. The fourth chapter seeks to uncover how grandparents affect grandchildren’s growth. The fifth chapter discusses the issues of grandparents and grandchildren. The research reaches some conclusions. In the text, the roles of grandfathers show three types of images: optimistic; perseverant; and withered. The roles of grandmothers show three types of images: kind but tough; always young in heart; and cold. The roles of grandchildren show three types of images: mature; identity needed; and needing family company. Grandparents play roles in passing down, supplying physical needs, and teaching. The issues of grandparent and grandchildren reflect real society, including social phenomena such as the teaching style grandparents use with their grandchildren, the changes in family structure, grandparents' pressure, the change in years of required conpulsory education, living styles, divorce, aborigines moving to the cities, etc. Finally, this paper integrates the results of each chapter, and makes related suggestions to the juvenile novel’s writer who is interested in grandparent-grandchildren issues.

Due to its history of once being colonized by different countries as well as its special geological location, the cultural diversity in Taiwan makes it politically urgent to establish its cultural identity and subjectivity. Either in economy, culture, or education, the uniqueness of Taiwan has been established. In my view, it is exactly what youth novels can do. Nowadays children's literature receives more and more attention. Chiuko Children's Literature Award has contributed to the production of youth novels most. I chose the works from 1992 to 2004 receiving Chiuko Children's Literature Awards as my study subjects. There are six chapters in mythesis. First, several of the youth novels awards in Taiwan are introduced, general conditions of Taiwanese culture appearing in the writings are discussed. Besides, the cultural meaning, the purpose and the domain of my study are also stated in the chapter one. Second, the cultural events described in the novels are sorted out to be religous activities, customs and legends, the search of family root, the collective memory of our society, and the meanings of our food and entertainment experiences. Third, I did some extensive thinking, based on the depictions in the novels of Taiwanese culture, about ethnic integration and conflict in Taiwan, the impact of the awakening of cultural identity, and the implications of the cultural settings in which the youth were put in the novels. Fourth, I discussed the images of the figures in the context of Taiwanese culture, and how the male and female teenagers, their parents, and the old treat their culture respectively. Fifth, I tried to sum up the cultural functions of the youth novels, the elimination of conflict, the culture transmission, the social educaiton, the establishment of adult ceremony and its meaning, and strengthening friendship and coherence. Sixth, I presented my point of view about the coexistence of literature with culture in the novels I studied.

Abstract Different encounters in life make different stories because of everyone’s unique living surrounding. The topics of Chiuko Modern Children’s Literature Award made the youth as the leading roles to describe the initiated trip of their changes and growth process. These works are like mirrors when the young stand in front just like to experienced the every moment and feeling in their life. They feel so close as to these works and learn to adapt themselves from others’ steps. There are five chapters in this study. First, in addition to introducing the important rewards of youth novels in Taiwan and the eternal topic “Initiation and Growth”, there are also some statements about youth’s troubles and the purpose of this study. Second, concluding and analyzing those three parts of the youth’s growth and initiation - conflict, escape and identity. Third, as the mind catchers -family, teachers, friends, and the elders, they help the youth to solve problems that they have met. Fourth, probing how the youth overcome the difficulty they’ve met to proceed a high level that they have a new identity and to acknowledge about themselvesself and the future. The last chapter, the paper concludes this study and describes the characters of these mind catchers. The troubles of the youth could be released by the assistance of these novels. And the characters of mind catchers reflect the problems the youth met, and also are the keys to being initiated. These Winning Chiuko Modern Children’s literature works, besides having clear topics and providing some information, they also have their educational meaning , they keep the youth company through the suffering and sentimental days.

Society in the 1990s changed fast in Taiwan. Children and teenagers who grew up in this kind of society often faced varieties of family, school and social problems. Of these problems, family problems had the greatest impact. Therefore, in many kinds of children’s literatures, this research focuses on young adult fictions which emphasize the practical life most, and then take the family problems in these fictions as the theme of the research. Also, based on the design and development of the plot, this research analyzes family problems, and discusses the solutions dealing with the problems and the influences resulted from the problems. This research uses the young adult fictions works which have won Chiuko’s modern children’s literature award as example of societal changes. The awards have been held for nine years from 1992 to 2000. These writings can more accurately reflect the problems children and teenagers faced in the 1990s. The research indicates: from the texts, the cause of family problems in modern Taiwan are from four aspects displayed: the change of family styles, the change of dual-sex family role, the conflict between family members, and children’s problems mentally and physically when growing up. As for the disposing of the family problems, they can be processed by adaptation to the change of family styles, adaptation to dual-sex family role, the solution of family conflict, and assistance mentally and physically for children as they grow up. And the effects of the family problems to the family are negative and positive. Through this research, it can be seen that the award winning authors of the Chiuko’s award, have accurately depicted family problem, resulting from changes in Taiwanese society. Also, this research can provide writers of future young adult fictions with materials and themes which are the real needs for children and teenagers. And it opens wider field of vision in writing.

A Study of Taiwanese Young Adult Problem Fiction ---- Works Chosen from Chiuko Modern Children's Literature Award Winning Books Chang Chia Hui National Taitung University The Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature Abstract Young people naturally have their problems. Those problems partly reflect social issues in Taiwan. Some authors of young adult fiction describe difficulties and struggles young people meet in their family, school and society. We could observe social changes in Taiwan through reading those works. Chiuko Modern Children's Literature Award has held 16 sessions since 1992. This award aims to encourage the writers to improve the quality of local children's literature, to enhance children's appreciation to inspire their creativity and to enlarge their field of view and their level of social care. Both quality and quantity of the award winning books are abundant. The aims of this paper are threefold: (a) to understand the classification of juvenile problems in the award winning books; (b) to clarify the causes of juvenile problems in those works; (c) to analyze the pattern of solution to juvenile problems in those works. The method used in this study was the textual analysis, which included document analysis and content analysis. The purpose of document analysis is to consolidate the synopsis of juvenile problems in Taiwan. The aim of content analysis in this study is to analyze the classification, the causes and the pattern of solution of juvenile problems. Several research questions were addressed in this study, and the principal findings suggested that (a) the classification of juvenile problems in the works are divided into three types: law and regulation violation, psychological disorder and learning disorder; (b) the works presented the conflicts of self, man, society and nature; (c) the works showed a simple and easy pattern of solution to juvenile problems. Keywords: young adult fiction, juvenile problem, problem novel, Chiuko Modern Children's Literature Award.

The temple is a part of the inhabitant lives central and the mind reposing place. The building decoration is also one of the Chinese tradition building characteristics, where it is fastidious about the cultural connotation. It was not only attributing to the unique of cultural but it had essential significance and more diversity function throughout the decoration theme of temple building research, would be able to understand the traditional culture of races and its connotation. Shanshanguangwang temple in Chiuru, Pintung was founded in the Qing Dynasty of Qianlong 43 years(1778). It had underwent maintenance during Shiaowa forth year (1929), but it was not involved the construction of main structure and only done partial maintenance, which is difference with new build. The current outlook of temple was preserved by Pingtung county according to the maintenance finished on the main part of building during the colonization of Japanese. Especially, the wood carving method on “four points golden pillar”, those were the four lintels of the main hall was rarely applied in Taiwan. The objective for this study was to analyze the theme of wood carving and the formation background of wood carving on four lintel at Shanshanguangwang temple, Chiuru. Throughout the analysis of wood carving theme and found that the decoration ideal was mainly taken from “The Legend of the Three Kingdoms”, ”The Legend of the DingShan Xue attacking west”, “Commenting historical of Legend Tang”, “Si You Ji” and etc as there were plenty of decoration themes. While referred at the wood carving themes like Wan-Hui temple in Pintung and Tien-Hou Temple in Lukang that decorated during the colonization of Japanese, had emphasized “The Legend of the Three Kingdoms”, ”The Legend of the DingShan Xue attacking west”, “Commenting historical of Legend Tang”, “Si You Ji” etc, were the important decoration of temple, and simultaneously it also reflected the decoration theme, which the folk artisan habitually used at that time. The wood carving decoration style on lintels of Shanshanguangwang temple, Chiuru might not as good as famous artisan’s decoration essence, but its designed outline of personage characters, appeared “young clumsy with humor” and had consecutively presented the simple and unadorned style of the folk artisan, which was worth for further analyzing. Hence, this studied could arouse the importance of architectural art of these folk artisans.

The main goal of the study is to analyze the father- child relationship among the award-winning works of “Chiu Ko Juvenile & Children's Literature Award” from 1990 to 2000. Based on the interaction bewtween fathers and children and the images of a father shows in the works, the research classifies the father-child relationship into three ranks: cohesive, moderate, and bad. By text analysis, the study draws the conclusion below: First, there is more interaction in the cohesive father-child relationship. Besides, they trust each other more than the other two ranks. Investigating “Chiu Ko Juvenile & Children's Literature Award” from 1990 to 2000, a successful father will look after both children’s daily life and mental recreation carefully. That affects a lot not only a child’s value but the attitude toward life. Second, there are some differences among interaction among the books. The atmosphere in family is quite companionate in substance. Fathers of this rank usually take care of kids’ basic need; however, they don’t pay as much attention as the first rank. All in all, it is not the most ideal form. Third, there are many conflicts in the interaction of father and child. In this rank level, fathers irritate often, and their mood are not steady. Because of the reasons above, children would have fights with fathers easily, or they would try hard to get out of the relationship between their fathers.

Abstract The study aims to analyze the images of the elders in the prizewinning works of Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award , chosen as the literary text. Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award, the only one in Taiwan to solicit young adult fictions, attempts to encourage the productions in children literature, improve the level of children literature in Taiwan, as well as develop children’s global views and their care to society and life. The award is considered as the benchmark of young adult fictions in Taiwan. The researcher chooses the text as a result of the abundant and various images of Chinese society. Based on the sociology and psychology of aging, the researcher organizes the text related to the images of the elders in Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award and concludes that the elders represent the roles of a leading character, a helper, and a donor in the majority according to Propp’s theory of role differentiation in Morphology of the Folktale. The study explores the images of the elders in young adult fictions and analyzes their views of life and value. In terms of the appearances, the inner, the relationships between the elders and their children, grandchildren, friends as well as nature, the belief of cultural generation , and their ways of thinking. Aging is one of the lessons in life. The structure of population shows that the proportion of the elders increases. To sum up, the elders overcome the facts of aging, help others voluntarily, treat their descendent gently, confront the future diligently and firmly, solve the difficulties of their descendent by sophisticate wisdom, at the same time, pass down the experiences and cultural knowledge, and reveal the abundant cultural image. The elders perform perfectly in the long life marathon. Of great worth, the elderly women change their attitudes toward life. Furthermore, they are self-approval and do their best to brighten their life.

With the changes of social economy, family form alters. Although the main form of Taiwan family is core family, the number of grandparenting families has gradually increased according to the data of Directorate General of Budget. Confronting the transition of family form, especially the grandparenting families, grandparents and children are most influenced. The difficulties and challenges faced by grandparents and grandchildren in grandparenting families are what authors concerned. Authors demonstrated the life situations, physical and psychological conditions of grandparents and grandchildren, reflected the problems in the grandparenting families through their writing, which led children to care and accept grandparenting families. However, it is quite important whether authors can precisely describe the image and condition of grandparents and grandchildren. This study focused on text analysis, discussed the award-winning works with grandparenting families as backgrounds in the whole 20 sessions of ChiuKo Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, and summarized the grandparents-grandchildren image, grandparents-grandchildren interaction relationship and children’s growth and enlightenment. Based on the research results, it was seemed that the grandparent- grandchildren images were mainly negative images except for intimate grandparent- grandchildren interaction relationship; as progress moves far ahead, the grandparent- grandchildren interaction relationship would tend to end up with harmonious relationship and positive description. The conflicts between grandparents and grandchildren were derived from their differences in personality traits and values, inappropriate parenting styles and psychological treatment, poor language communications, economic hardship and grandparents’ poor health; and most conflicts were language conflicts.
