This article mainly describes the development of Chinese design culture and the impact of culture in Germany, Italy and Scandinavian countries on industrial design. Then it analyzes differences from perception of nature, value, thinking mode and aesthetic point between China and the West. It compares the difference of industrial design in different countries and impact of different cultures on industrial design. It systematically studies the relationship between culture and industrial design. The key point in design is use of culture. The innovative point in this article is to apply the cultural elements to industrial design. In design, the combination of cultural elements and products should be natural and proper. The cultural elements and products should have something in common. People should not superficially impose cultural symbols on the appearance of product.

Hong Kong, by now, is quite modern. At the same time, it remains essentially Chinese. Measured by most accepted indicators, Hong Kong qualifies as a newly industrialized region. It is using so much inanimate power to drive machines that the increase in fuel consumption is no longer proportionate to the increase in population size. It has joined the ranks of the “ecological phase 4 societies” in which the livelihood of the inhabitants is dependent on “extrasomatic energy”. As it began its transition in the pattern of energy usage much later, Hong Kong is still well behind western industrial nations in per capita energy consumption. But in Asia, in 1981, it had the third highest per capita use of commercial energy after Japan and Singapore, which stood at 1,487 kilograms of coal equivalent. Between 1960 and 1979 its average annual growth rate in energy consumption was about 10 per cent, a rate higher than those of all the industrial economies and most Asian countries except Singapore and the Republic of Korea. Hong Kong's productivity is high, ranking third in Asia after Japan and Singapore with a Gross National Product (GNP) per capita that grew at the annual rate of 6 8 per cent. By 1980 its GNP per capita reached US$4,240.5 In terms of employment, in 1981, 49 per cent of its labour force was engaged in manufacturing and construction, 47 per cent in commerce and various lines of services, and just 2 per cent in agriculture. The inhabitants of Hong Kong are keen participants in the mass media.

A few problems, which appear in current Chinese developing design field, will be focus on in this article. The relationship between the traditional culture, inheriting of the culture and industrial design will be analyzed by the example of different country traditional culture embedded with different design. And, some characteristic of Chinese traditional culture has also been discussed. The relation will be clear on thinking to "person". The cultural inheriting will be embodying in design, realizing tradition and culture on the connotation.

It is vital to promote the sustainable economic and social development and ecological culture prosperity of forest areas in various regions to scientifically and objectively understand the development status of forestry-ecological-culture industries in all provinces (districts and cities) of China. It is also important to clarify the advantages of industrial development in various regions. Based on the comprehensive consideration of economic, social, and political factors, the evaluation index system of forestry-ecological-culture industry, which includes industrial productivity, industrial influence, industrial and driving force, is constructed in this study. Furthermore, the development of forestry-ecological-culture industry in 31 provinces and regions of China from 2014 to 2019 is analyzed by cluster analysis. The analysis categorized the industries into four development types: very high level developed, high level developed, medium level developed, and low level developed according to the principal component score, which sums up the characteristics of various types of industrial development. The results show that the forestry-ecological-culture industry in China presents the spatial distribution of “east high and west low”, which is related to the difference in regional economic development level. Furthermore, the advantage of resource endowment is not clear, the gap between provinces and regions is large, and the overall development level of industry is relatively low. The findings of this study provide theory-based guidance and policy suggestions for improving the efficiency of industrial development and optimizing spatial distribution of diversified industrial development.

Concerning on the current vague definition of industrial design in China, this paper indicates that industrial design and engine design are compound concept. In the first place, it introduces the definition and theory of industrial design. Then, by analyzing design development and industry development relationship, it regards modern industrial design as a heritage and a production from the development of traditional handcraft design. Finally, it proposes that in order to regulate a modern design theory with Chinese characteristics. We must learn the advanced industrial design theory from the west. At the same time, we must fully excavate the essence of traditional Chinese handicraft culture. Also we should integrate Chinese traditional handicraft design theory into the west modern industrial design theory.

In this era of industrial integration, the synergistic energy given collaborative agglomerations of the culture and tourism industries is crucial for fulfilling the potential of the underlying resources. The cultural grasp of artistic depths when fully supported can transform the cultural experiences for tourists and participants alike. In this study, the theory of spatial economics is used to analyze the spatial coupling degree of the Chinese culture and tourism industries from 2010 to 2019, based on the coupling coordination degree model. A spatial correlation test model was used to analyze the spatial–temporal evolution characteristics of industrial collaborative agglomeration, and a spatial vector autoregression model and impulse response function was used to analyze the economic effects of industrial collaborative agglomeration. The results show: (1) A coupling and coordination relationship exists between Chinese culture and the tourism industries. This collaborative bond is in the initial stage. (2) The overall spatial correlation between these industries can potentially provide significant and positive relationships among several components of the community, tourist, and cultural spectrum. The local spatial correlation of culture and tourism industries in Eastern China is ranked the highest; the central region is in the middle. The western region ranks the lowest. (3) The collaborative synergy of the cultural and tourism industries has a nonlinear economic effect on economic development, while the impacts of different industrial collaborative groups have the potential to strengthen the Chinese economy from a more technological perspective. This study provides theoretical support and recommendations for promoting the coordinated development of Chinese culture and tourism industries, which can also serve as an example for other regions seeking a stronger relationship between their culture, economic growth of the region as a whole, and the tourism industries.

Chinese animated films such as Monkey King: Hero is Back in 2015, Big Fish & Begonia in 2016 and Ne Zha: I am the Destiny in 2019 won higher box office and they achieved a similar popularity as the Wolf Warriors (2015 and 2017) in China’s film market. Perhaps partially because these animations bring audience a sense of familiarization such as they reveal popular culture and collective beliefs (i.e., “I’m the Destiny” as a slogan) to promote cultural identity. On the other hand, the making of Chinese animated films has been gradually getting mature in narration, adaptation, and creation. Both the production mode and the industrial scope have been formed to compete with Japanese anime and American cartoons. Though there are still many problems in making Chinese animations, Chinese School has been working on interpretating and deconstructing the essence of Chinese culture in their animated works. This attitude also marks Chinese School’s determination to disseminate Chinese culture so as to rebuild its confidence towards the animation world.

This article explores culture-led urban development in Xinxing County, Guangdong Province. Arguing for the relevance of cultural governance to the study of culture-led development in China, it heeds to the specific cultural knowledge and discourses that frame policy, and thinks critically on the creation of a unitary, all-encompassing idea of culture, which many culture-led development projects fall prey to. Empirically, this article presents a study of the Ecological Tourism Industrial Park of the Sixth Patriarch’s Hometown, a high-end leisure and recreation complex. It first sketches the ways in which Zen is re-packaged as a redeeming force that cures the alienating effects of modernisation. It moves to an analysis of the production of culturally encoded consumption spaces envisioned by the Plan of the Ecological Tourism Industrial Park of the Sixth Patriarch’s Hometown. Finally, this article reflects on how the Ecological Tourism Industrial Park of the Sixth Patriarch’s Hometown imposes a dominant, unitary conception of local culture, excluding pre-established practices and routines that connect local people and Zen in lived and habitual ways, yet are devalued by the notion of Zen as high-end symbolic goods.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare and understand how age, gender and culture affect individual career and work-related attitudes in Chinese and American samples. Design/methodology/approach – Online and printed questionnaires were administered to employees and managers in China, whereas in the USA, faculty, staff and students at a Midwestern university responded to an online survey. Snowball sampling technique was used to collect data. Independent sample t-tests were conducted to test the hypothesis. Findings – The study showed different work values and attitudes in the workplace between Chinese and the US samples, and indicated the specifics influences that national culture has on them. Culture affects generational changes; generational differences in the US sample are bigger than in Chinese sample; work values differ across generations and cultures; traditional gender role differences persist more strongly across generations in Chinese sample than in the US sample. Research limitations/implications – Generalizability issues; cross-sectional data. Practical implications – US-based multi-national corporations need to understand these differences and better manage their diverse employees operating in China. Originality/value – This study compared generation, culture and gender differences simultaneously; parallel groups at similar life stages were used by basing the boundaries of each generation on the distinct cultural events of each nation. This approach is more consistent with generation definitions than by using influential specific events of each country, respectively. Useful to managers, it will provide guidance for understanding work values and attitudes across gender and generations in the USA and China. Most benefit will occur for US based multinational companies that have Chinese operations, and manage employees with cultural, gender and generational differences.

The article reconstructs selected motifs in the philosophy of Lin Yutang, a twentieth-century Chinese thinker, translator and editor, especially popular in the West, undertaken, as it were, on the margins of his work to explain and popularize Chinese culture and philosophy in the West. Lin reflects on issues such as how to effectively and accurately explain a radically alien civilization to the Western-educated reader, in his or her own language, and who can appoint himself as the representative of Chinese culture at all? As a bilingual author, Lin very accurately shows the state of suspension between two cultures, characteristic of an intercultural interpreter who attempts to simultaneously move within two disproportionate, culturally determined conceptual schemes.

In China, medicinal plants enjoy an inherent and prominent role in the general health service. Due to excessive collection in the wild of rare and endangered plants, the natural resources of medicinal plants are depleting fast. In order to protect the medicinal plant resources, the Chinese government has implemented Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) programmes to cultivate the main popular medicinal plants in China. Thus far, around 800 GAP cultivation bases have been established nationwide and the total cultivation area of medicinal plants has reached 5000 km2. Besides GAP cultivation of medicinal plants, tissue cultural biotechnology has been applied to serve as an alternative for the supply of medicinal plant materials in China. Thus far, shoot production by tissue culture technology has been successful in medicinal plants such as Anoectochilus formosanus, Dalbergia odorifera, Dendrobium, Momordica grosvenorii, Pseudostellaria heterophylla and Taxus chinensis. In addition, the cell culture of Lithospermum erythrorhizon and Saussurea involucrata has been industrialized in 300–20,000-litre bioreactors. Besides the production of shoot and cell culture in bioreactors, tissue culture technology is also being practised for the conservation of rare medicinal plants.

Since the reform and opening-up, China has actively followed overseas costume trends and bidden farewell to the era of uniforms. It has gone through evolution from collective imitation to physical liberation to the advocacy of diversified individuality to this new age, where the Chinese culture of costume is radiant with self-confidence. The culture of ancient Chinese costume has a long history with extensive and profound connotations. This paper, from the perspective of cultural confidence, adopts the propagation mode of ‘5W’ to discuss the overseas dissemination of ancient Chinese costume culture, the specific content of Chinese-foreign exchange, and theoretical approaches in the theoretical framework of communication based on the case of ‘American Tour of Innovative Design Works of Ancient Chinese Costume Culture’, organised by Jiangnan University in 2018, in a bid to serve as a reference for the narration of the national story, the communication of a national voice and the creation of a national image.

This book is an “ethnographic history” of jiajiang (“Infernal Generals” as translated by the author), a peculiar type of ritual dance troupe that has long been an eye-catching feature of southern Taiwan's temple festivals and pilgrimages. Based on extensive ethnographic and historical data collected by Sutton in southern Taiwan between 1988 and 2001, the two main questions that he addresses in this book are framed squarely within the decades-long paradigmatic problematique of Sinology. The first question is “Why and how are the diverse forms of Chinese culture generated from a shared groundwork?” More precisely, in contrast to many attempts to discern a unitary “Chineseness” from extensive variations between local Chinese culture forms, the author aspires to examine how one single tradition in Chinese culture evolved into various local styles. The second question is “Why do local religions keep on thriving in Taiwan despite the fact that the island has modernized to become a world-known industrial economy?” Put differently, why and how does Taiwan's experience repudiate Max Weber's hypothesis on disenchantment?

Purpose – Based on the literature on organizational legitimacy, organizations must adhere to the value-driven standards inherent in the cultures in which they operate. Organizations’ Web sites help increase the public’s awareness and understanding of their values and culture. The purpose of this paper is to examine the strategic legitimation efforts of Chinese organizations through their Web content. Design/methodology/approach – To identify the core values and cultures communicated by Chinese organizations, a systematic content analysis was conducted on the Web contents of Chinese Fortune 500 companies (n=500) as listed by the 2010 Chinese Fortune 500 online magazine. Findings – The major findings included the following: over half (i.e. 62.2 percent) of the Chinese Fortune 500 companies communicated their organizational values on their Web sites; this study identified some key value clusters (e.g. such as trustworthiness, propriety, benevolence, or self-regulation) for Chinese organizations’ legitimacy; Confucianism exerted a strong influence on these Chinese organizations’ values; and Chinese organizations relied on cooperation and coordination to achieve harmonic relationships with others. Research limitations/implications – The current study only focussed on the most profitable and successful Chinese organizations. Future studies could extend this analysis to examine differences between the values communicated by privately owned and non-profit organizations in China. Since the current study adopted a strategic organizational legitimacy framework, future research should use an institutional legitimacy framework by actively assessing the relational networks of Chinese consumers to identify the societal standards that make up organizational legitimacy from the consumer perspective. Focus groups or in-depth interviews with various consumers and employees would help identify these expectations and their corresponding values and provide an in-depth examination of how these standards are created. Practical implications – This study suggested two key implications. First, Chinese organizations believe that the values (e.g. harmony, truth-seeking, or unity) held by employees have formed the foundation of organizational behavior or image. Second, individual and cultural values have guiding roles in the standards that constituents establish for organizations. Global communication practitioners must counsel managers conducting business with Chinese organizations to recognize the cultural influence on how Chinese companies conduct business. Originality/value – This study represents a pioneering study in a series of studies focussed on conceptualizing organizational legitimacy in Chinese cultures.

Summary: In the article, the authors analyse the primary problems which arose during the design product development in the field of industrial furniture production during the period from the beginning of the 20th century, including during the opening of China, to the present. The vector of the furniture industry development is studied through the industrial design evolution. The reasons for the emergence of a new style in furniture design in China, analysed in detail in connection with changes in economic and cultural realities, are studied. The question of the influence of the Song dynasty aesthetics on the formation and development of a "new language" in furniture design is touched upon. This dynasty’s cultural heritage formed the basis of the new style in design not only in terms of appearance, shape and structure but also in a deeper understanding of the principles of constructing form and meaning inherent in traditional Chinese culture. As an important part of the ancient culture of China, the Song Dynasty aesthetics is an invaluable spiritual national heritage of the entire nation, which is fully reflected in the revival of mass interest in national culture in the field of technical aesthetics and industrial production. Compared to Russia, the modern model of design development is completely different. Design in Russia largely follows the development vector laid down within the framework of the Soviet Union's “technical aesthetics” and still largely meets the needs of the industry (of course, with the necessary adjustment for time). In Russian history, the formation of the profession of a designer coincided with two revolutions: a political revolution that led to a change in social attitudes, and an artistic revolution that began before the first and continued after it, while Chinese modern design did not seem to have experienced such significant perturbations. However, it seems that the concept of the New style of design in China and the concept of Russian modern design, based on the experience of the Soviet period, rely on traditions, actively incorporate innovations and strive to find a unique path that best suits the development vector of each of the countries.

This case is about how United Asia Live Entertainment Co. Ltd. (United Asia), a real Chinese production and marketing company and a commercial arm of the Ministry of Culture, localized a popular global product, Mamma Mia!, to compete with other international and local firms during the period when the Government was pushing the reform of the cultural industry. Mamma Mia! is the first-ever Western musical without roots in the Chinese culture, being presented in Chinese (Mandarin) by an entire Chinese cast in China. United Asia staged the translated version with the creative team of the original musical. This case describes how United Asia faced and overcame many obstacles, including talent shortage, uncertain customer expectations and immature industrial clusters while it was preparing for the first show. The production turned out to be a big success. Although United Asia planned to launch more Western musicals in Chinese, the company aspired to go beyond introducing only copyrighted musicals and to create original musicals. This case leads to the reflection and discussion on what the company, as a groundbreaker in China’s new musical industry, should do next and how to sustain its competitive advantages.

With the advent of the information age, Internet technology and computer technology are gradually applied in various fields. Human daily life is inseparable from the help of information technology. The progress and development of the times are also changing our industrial environment. The Internet of things, artificial intelligence, and digital production have been widely used in the industrial field. We need to integrate the new intelligent management concept in the industrial 4.0 era into the modern industrial system and media communication. In the communication of sports culture, how to integrate the intelligent technology under the background of industry 4.0 and realize the spatiotemporal modeling and analysis of human behavior and behavior characteristics is the main content of our research. Firstly, this study briefly analyzes the development and historical process of industry 4.0 era and explores the impact of Internet of things and information technology on sports culture communication. This study analyzes the development process of Chinese sports culture communication and probes into the influence and significance of sports culture communication on human behavior. Under the background of industrial 4.0 management, a model of human temporal and spatial behavior change in sports culture communication is established. Human behavior trajectory is analyzed by data mining, human behavior recognition algorithm, behavior quantitative analysis method, and behavior feature model. The results show that under the background of industry 4.0 management, human behavior modeling can clearly describe the basic characteristics and behavior state in the process of sports culture communication and can predict and analyze the human behavior performance of such social activities and phenomena. Through data mining, data preprocessing, and behavior quantitative analysis, human behavior trajectory is studied. It has a positive impact on the behavior trend in human daily life. The main factor affecting behavior change is whether to receive sports culture news.

China’s cultural policy has shifted from a government-driven direction to a model centered on marketization development model. The economic value of culture has come to be seen as the main engine of growth for national development; moreover, cultural and creative industries (CCIs) have been strategically fostered. Here, in place of a unilateral top-down method imposed by the government, a marketization development model has been promoted to actively accommodate the policy discourse presented by cultural creators/consumers. China’s CCI policy discourse may indicate the policy direction necessary to develop itself into a cultural powerhouse. In this study, policy discourse is collected and analyzed for keywords of China’s CCIs from 2006 to 2020. Text mining and network analysis were performed, and the main results are as follows. First, it was found that China’s CCI policy discourse has been gaining traction; its centers appear to be found within large cities with rich cultural infrastructure, where major cultural projects are discovered and promoted, and Chinese culture is being globalized. Second, the items/contents of the Chinese CCIs are diversifying and developing into a human-friendly Chinese-style cultural and creative industry model that values experience. This should be noted to help guide the future direction of China’s cultural policy. Finally, it is necessary to adjust industrial concentrations and regional development imbalances because of the acceleration of industrial clusters in CCIs.

Purpose With the dramatic transformation of China’s industrial landscape, since the late 1990s, adaptive reuse of industrial heritage for cultural purposes has become a widely occurring phenomenon in major Chinese cities. The existing literature mainly focusses on specific cases, yet sees heritage conservation similarly at both national and regional scale and rarely identifies the main factors behind the production of China’s industrial-heritage reuse. The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences in heritage reuse outcomes among three Chinese mega-cities and explore the driving factors influencing the differences. Design/methodology/approach This paper compares selected industrial-heritage cultural precincts in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, and explores the local intervening factors influencing differences in their reuse patterns, including the history of industrial development, the availability of the nineteenth and/or twentieth century industrial buildings, the existence of cultural capital and the prevalence of supportive regional government policy. Findings The industrial-heritage reuse in the three cities is highly regional. In Beijing, the adaptation of industrial heritage has resulted from the activities of large-scale artist communities and the local government’s promotion of the city’s cultural influence; while in Shanghai, successful and more commercially oriented “sea culture” artists, private developers in creative industries and the “creative industry cluster” policy make important contributions. Chongqing in contrast, is still at the early stage of heritage conservation, as demonstrated by its adaptive reuse outcomes. Considering its less-developed local cultural economy, Chongqing needs to adopt a broader range of development strategies. Originality/value The paper contributes to knowledge by revealing that the production of industrial-heritage cultural precincts in Chinese mega-cities is influenced by regional level factors, including the types of industrial heritage, the spontaneous participation of artist communities and the encouragement of cultural policy.

AbstractAs Chinese investors set up business operations in Africa, disagreements between Chinese and Africans regarding work attitudes have emerged. A prevailing view is that cultural differences cause tensions between groups with regards to the meaning of “hard work,” “discipline” and “eating bitterness.” However, we argue that conflicting perceptions of work ethics between Chinese and Africans are instead caused by evolving notions of time that accompany a transition from a pre-capitalist manner of production to that of industrial capitalism. First, we refute the assumption that culture determines work ethics. Second, we show that when a society industrializes, its notions of work ethics and time perception change; we then show how China's industrialization impacts its approaches to operations in Africa. Third, we use two case studies of Chinese investments in Tanzania and Ethiopia to illustrate how Chinese managers are changing African workers’ attitudes through time discipline. Finally, we discuss the implications of a convergence of work ethics between Chinese and Africans.

The article analyzes the activities of Confucius Institutes as a subject of modern foreign cultural policy of China. Methods of increasing influence at the international level are very diverse, ranging from China's participation in international projects (cultural and industrial exhibitions, Olympiads, scientific forums, etc.) organized on its territory to the organization of the media space that gradually covers the whole world. To implement the state policy of "soft power", the Chinese government approved the development of Chinese educational and cultural centers around the world. These institutions bear the name of the greatest Chinese philosopher, the teacher of the nation, Confucius. In China, his name is associated with culture and education, as the philosopher himself attached great importance to tradition and education. The Confucius Institutes network provides opportunities for personal and business contacts of the international community with representatives of Chinese science, culture, business, and politics. Such meetings increase the interest in learning the language, raising it to a more pragmatic level, associated with obtaining new opportunities. As a rule, the departments of the Confucius Institute are opened on the basis of Oriental Studies faculties in the leading national universities of a particular country. Thanks to their educational and cultural projects, the Confucius Institutes arouse not only great interest and desire to join the values of Chinese culture, but also enjoy great trust among all those who love China or plan to connect their lives with the prospects that this country opens for friends, opening up new prospects for student and professor mobility.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses some aspects of innovation in China. As China seeks to transition to a knowledge-based economy, it may become more important for China to develop innovative technologies to sustain economic growth. How do China's history, culture, institutions, and organizations aid or hinder innovation? How does China's national innovation system compare to the innovation culture in the US, as well as other developed and emerging economies? What are the prospects for the future of the Chinese national innovation system? Our starting point is the Needham Puzzle – the paradox that while China was once a world leader in technological development, it fell behind; the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe rather than in China. Potential explanations for the Needham Puzzle may shed light on the challenges facing innovation in modern China. We identify three factors that might help explain the Needham Puzzle; assess how the Needham Puzzle and Chinese culture and history have affected the modern innovation system; discuss comparative aspects of innovation ecosystems in the United States and elsewhere; and suggest that Chinese innovation emphasizes exploitation and refinement of existing knowledge to the exploration and development of new knowledge. We also discuss implications for the future of innovation in China.

This paper considers the cultural opposites observed in various segments of Chinese culture during the author's three stays in China over a period of twenty years. The first and second stay, in 1986 and 1989 respectively, coincided with the initial period of the implementation of modernization reforms in China, when their results were just beginning to be felt. The third stay was in 2009, towards the end of the third decade of reform implementation, at the time of an already developed marketoriented communism. The paper's main thesis is that most of the phenomena observed in present-day urban China can be assigned to opposite categories, namely Chinese-Western and traditional- contemporary. Cultural opposites have been observed in the sphere of tourism and the behavior of both Chinese and foreign visitors, in the use of Chinese and English in notices and signs in public places, and in the promotion of traditional and modern architecture. In addition, they have been noted in the presentation of arts and crafts and industrial products, in the manner of consumption of hot drinks, and in the combining of Chinese and foreign cuisine. They are also evident in a Beijing Opera performance adapted both to the modern Chinese and to foreigners, and in the traditional Chinese exercises and western dances performed in public parks. In conclusion, the paper suggests that the process of establishing connections between China and the West is being carried on in a moderate and controlled way. In the globalization process cultural opposites coexist and merge, imparting new features to Chinese culture.

Pigs have played a central role in the subsistence and culture of China for millennia. The close relationship between pigs and people began when humans gradually domesticated wild pigs over 8,000 years ago. While pigs initially foraged around settlements, population growth led people to pen their pigs, which made them household trash processors and fertilizer producers. Household pigs were in daily contact with people, who bred them to fatten quickly and produce larger litters. Early modern Europeans found Chinese pigs far superior to their own and bred the two to create the breeds now employed in industrial pork production around the world, including China. In recent decades, industrial farms that scientifically control every aspect of pigs’ lives have spread rapidly. Until recently, most Chinese people ate pork only on special occasions; their ability in recent decades to eat it regularly exemplifies China's increasing prosperity. Meanwhile, vast areas of North and South American farmland are now devoted to growing soybeans to feed hundreds of millions of pigs in China, and the methane, manure, and antibiotic resistance they produce creates environmental and health problems on a global scale.

AbstractThe article explores the morphological evolution of China’s 20th-century architecture chronologically. Chinese Neoclassicism has played a major role in forming the 20th-century heritage buildings surviving today. The phenomenon of Neoclassicism emerged because of the late arrival of China’s modernisation and industrialisation process compared with the West. In turn, in accepting and contesting Western culture, the Chinese elite have consciously relied upon architecture as a vehicle to uphold visible symbols of national Chinese identity and traditional Chinese culture. Meanwhile, in the foreign settlements of the treaty ports such as Shanghai, the Western Neoclassical style, along with other imported construction trends, also forms part of China’s 20th-century architectural heritage. Western Neoclassicism’s influence on China’s new architecture became even more evident in the mid-20th century, with the modern architectural heritage in Tiananmen Square as its exemplar. Nevertheless, the impact of Western modernist architecture on China’s architecture was minimal. It was not until the 1980s, as China reopened to the world, that various schools of thought from the post-industrial West flowed into China, which significantly enriched the types and sources of China’s 20th-century architectural heritage. Modern Classicism, late Modernism and Postmodernism all found their way into China’s contemporary architecture.

In this study, I sought to discuss the background of the formation of Chinese military thinking and deeds from the perspective of strategic culture, and to look into the future of the US-China military relations. China’s Confucian Strategic Culture also influences the thoughts and actions of Chinese today. It is clear that Confucianism had more influence on the Chinese than other ideas, but Confucian ideals have not always been one-size-fits-all solution to the international conflict. The military solutions which are often displayed in the present, have already been inherent in the notion of the Chinese since ancient times. The history of pain and humiliation experienced by the Chinese for more than 100 years after the Opium War has a profound influence on the modern Chinese strategic culture. China judges the infringement of territory and sovereignty as the most humiliating in its modern historical experience, which is deeply imprinted not only in the Chinese leadership but also in the consciousness of ordinary Chinese people. China regards American strategic culture the same as Western war methods and describes it as expanding and realistic, contrary to their pacifist ideals. When Chinese leaders perceive that the use of force they decide is a defensive nature at the level of self-defense, we should recognize that we can choose force.

The rural revitalization strategy proposal is not a passive water, but rather one with its own internal historical logic. The rural revitalization strategy has been implemented in a consistent manner with China’s rural construction practice over the last 100 years. Since modern times, the Chinese agricultural civilization has been severely harmed by the collision and friction with western industrial and commercial civilizations, which has directly aroused the strong reflection of people with lofty ideals from all walks of life in Chinese society and led them down the path of rural construction aimed at “rejuvenating” the countryside. Accelerating the development of rural culture is beneficial to the overall improvement of social culture and the happiness of the Chinese people. As a result, the development and construction of rural culture will have a significant impact on China. The random forest algorithm simulates the data learning process based on data mining, creates a model, and returns a judgment result. The strategy of art professional service is examined in this study. The random forest algorithm was used to revitalize rural areas. The random forest algorithm’s learning process is very quick, and it is still very effective in dealing with art professional services. The current random forest algorithm weighs the importance of all variables to determine the significance of switching from independent to dependent variables.

The use of antioxidants in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell cultures to improve monoclonal antibody production has been a topic of great interest. Nevertheless, the antioxidants do not have consistent benefits of production improvement, which might be cell line specific and/or process specific. In this work, we investigated how treatment with the antioxidant rosmarinic acid (RA) improved cell growth and titer in CHO cell cultures using transcriptomics. In particular, transcriptomics analysis indicated that RA treatment modified gene expression and strongly affected the MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, which regulate cell survival and cell death. Moreover, it was observed that these signaling pathways, which had been identified to be up-regulated on day 2 and day 6 by RA, were also up-regulated over time (from initial growth phase day 2 to slow growth or protein production phase day 6) in both conditions. In summary, this transcriptomics analysis provides insights into the role of the antioxidant RA in industrial cell culture processes. The current study also represents an example in the industry of how omics can be applied to gain an in-depth understanding of CHO cell biology and to identify critical pathways that can contribute to cell culture process improvement and cell line engineering.

Research HighlightsIn the quest to develop cities for the long run, the debate is whether to retain elements of culture or to reinvent such spaces for new uses. Cultural heritage preservation thus becomes an issue in urban planning, particularly in developing countries including Malaysia (Mohd Shakir Tamjes et al, 2017). Scholars mention that Kuala Lumpur needs to create a distinctive city identity and image if it is to achieve its bigger goal of becoming a World-Class City by 2020 (Mohamad Asri Ibrahim et al, 2017). A question raised by researchers is whether the policies to safeguard heritage buildings in Kuala Lumpur is comparable to the practices in UNESCO heritage sites such as Malacca and Georgetown (Mohd Shakir Tamjes et al, 2017). Through participant observation, combining focus group discussions, content analysis, photography, and videography, I outline how the preservation of one particular historical building, a Chinese clan association, increases the cultural value of the city’s surroundings in Kuala Lumpur, as well as being a major tourist attraction. This makes the case for the continued retention of historical buildings and practices, despite overarching social changes such as super-diversity (Vertovec, 2007). Research Objectives This paper makes the case for preserving a particular heritage building, namely the Chan See Shu Yuen Clan Association Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (CSSYKL), a clan association, pre-war historical site, and tourist attraction. Methodology How does the preservation of CSSYKL increase the cultural value of the city’s surroundings in Kuala Lumpur? This research question is answered through fieldwork by the project leader through participant observation which included photography, videography, content analysis of secondary documents, and focus group discussions with clan leaders and members. Photographic evidence is provided to argue for the case of enriching place attachment through the retention of meaning for inhabitants of Kuala Lumpur, due to the special nature it possesses. For example, Monnet (2014) conducted a photoethnography of urban space in the form of a multimedia essay, referring to the “production of data” rather than the “collection of data”. Monnet (2014) explained that images and sounds allow for attentive observation of the smallest details of daily life, and that the ethnographer experientially chooses to interpret and define what should be recorded in their photography - hence the “production of data”. This renders photographic evidence the best form of data for the case of cultural heritage preservation within the urban. Photographs were also harvested from stills captured in Google Maps under the Street View, where the journey was screen captured using Game DVR, a software which comes enclosed with Microsoft Windows 10. Results The photographic evidence shows how the preservation of cultural heritage buildings add character to the presence of Kuala Lumpur Chinatown, or Petaling Street. In the case of CSSYKL, it provides the historical elements as well as familiarity given its longstanding association with Kuala Lumpur’s history, and thus evokes the symbolic aesthetic. It provides symbolic aesthetic meaning to the future of Kuala Lumpur’s development and enriches the local cultural expression in league with the Malaysian National Cultural Policy. Ultimately, it guarantees that no matter how developed or industrialised Kuala Lumpur is, what with the move into the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Internet of Things, there will still be cultural meaning and place attachment resonant within the heart and soul of Kuala Lumpur. Even in the face of super-diversity, the clan association building will still reinvent itself as a place of attachment not only to those of Chinese descent but to all who are interested to appreciate its value. Findings Chan See Shu Yuen Clan Association Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (CSSYKL) is one example of a historical building which functioned not only in the past as a community centre for the Chinese who migrated to Malaya in search of economic opportunity, but still retains its functions today as a gateway to maintaining links with Mainland China, especially in the economic dimension. Simultaneously, the heritage building also attracts tourists from all around the world, including those from China and local tourists themselves. China has established a carbon emission reduction goal for 2030. For the Chinese government, there is a dilemma between reducing carbon emissions while still striving to maintain continuous economic growth in future. To achieve these “dual goals”, it is necessary to predict the optimal industrial structure under these constraints in 2030. By integrating the linear programming input–output model (LP-IO) with the RAS updating technique, this paper predicts the industrial structure in China in 2030 and compares it with the year 2018. The results show that China’s industry structure will experience major changes. In particular, most of the industries related to manufacturing, such as mining, petroleum, and metal, will lose their important positions in the economic system, while service industries such as culture, sports, and public service will take over the position as pillars of the economy. Additionally, carbon emissions in 2030 will be at least 12.8 billion tons. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the Chinese government should increase investment in service industries in advance to meet the goal of reducing carbon emissions earlier.

Purpose: Chinese language proficiency presents myriads of opportunities. However, students’ perceptions influence their decisions to learn the language and since perceptions vary in different contexts, this study examined how Ghanaian students perceive Chinese language learning. Methodology: The qualitative approach, with the descriptive research design was used for the study. The target population was the University of Cape Coast students who were neither reading BA Chinese language programme nor taking free Chinese language and culture classes. Using the convenience sampling technique, twenty-two students who volunteered to partake in the study were selected. Data for the study were collected using an open-ended questionnaire. The data collected were analysed using the thematic content analysis based on the techniques of opening and axial coding. Findings: The results revealed that Ghanaian students generally had positive perceptions of Chinese language learning, and those with unfavourable perceptions are likely enroll onto a form of Chinese learning course if they become aware of the benefits associated with proficiency in Chinese language. Recommendations: The study recommend that outreach programmes should be instituted by Chinese language centres in Ghana to sensitise the public on the benefits of Chinese language learning. The study also recommend more research to be done on Chinese language.

It argues that Chinese television drama production has progressed through three periods: industrial (1958–89), market (1990–2002), and most recently interpersonal (2003 onwards). These three stages of development are in turn associated with standardised production according to state-directed formulae, outbreaks of producer autonomy, and celebration of modern lifestyles and consumer culture. The paper provides an overview of the development of drama production during these three periods, and notes a shift from ‘socialist reality’ towards contemporary popular reality.

Traditional villages constitute rural systems with rich cultural heritage resources and the potential for tourism development. Improving resilience in the tourism industry in traditional villages in the post-pandemic era must be urgently reconsidered. This study focuses on the Chinese villages of Zhang Guying and Rebala in Hunan Province and uses a qualitative analysis method. Through in-depth study of two case villages, the study finds that traditional Chinese villages, especially tourist-oriented traditional villages, are more vulnerable to the impact of the epidemic than cities and other places. However, because of their unique traditional cultural connotations, traditional Chinese villages have the potential to enhance tourism resilience in the post-epidemic era through cultural excavation and cultural creative production. The embossed patterns, couplet stories, architecture and folk culture of traditional villages can be used for cultural and creative production. The production of digital products and physical cultural and creative products, and the formation of related industrial chains, will help improve the resilience of village tourism. The joint action of villages, attractiveness (scenic spots), production, social capital, government structure, and cultural creativity helps to transform “vulnerable individuals” into “ resilient industrial structures”. This research helps to reconsider whether the past tourism concepts (cultural creativity and creative tourism) have an effect on existing tourism destinations (especially Chinese traditional villages) in the context of the post-epidemic era, and whether they can be rejuvenated. Like other small organizational structures facing the threat of the epidemic, Chinese traditional villages have problems such as insufficient costs and reduced resource advantages. This study will focus on these issues to explore how cultural creativity can help improve existing problems and enhance tourism resilience.

China is the origin country of tea.Over the years, the tea industry in China has developed vigorously and becomes increasingly prosperous.Under the background of cultural and tourism integration, cultural creativit y is increasingly valued in the process of tourism product development. In the development process of Chinese tea products, the industrial chain is short and the added value is low. This paper will focus on the development of tea industry. Taking Taiping Houkui tea industry as an example, through data analysis, it will find out the reasons that hinder the sustainable development of Taiping Houkui tea industry, so as to develop and design tea tourism products, and discuss the basic path of sustainable development of tea tourism industry.

In 1956 the Chinese authorities accomplished the socialisation of private industry and commerce and handicrafts through the implementation of peaceful redemption and through taking charge of the original private management personnel. In January 1957, Shanghai industrialist Li Kangnian criticised the form of the redemption. He suggested extending the payment term of the fixed rate of interest (dingxi) from 7 years to 20 and changing the mode of payment to bank deposit receipts. In spring 1957 his proposal provoked a lively debate in commercial and industrial circles, whose members hoped to establish their relationship with the state on a contractual basis; they rejected the pressure exerted on them in the name of class conflict and asked for equal citizenship. However, these legitimate demands were severely suppressed during the anti-rightist campaign. The ccp’s propensity to instrumentalise policies made it impossible to achieve the original intention of using precious human resources, while it led to discrimination based on class and shaped a hierarchical society. In fact, the controversy over Li Kangnian’s proposals demonstrated a real confrontation between the patriarchal authoritarian culture of the Chinese Communist Party and the modern contractual culture of industrialists and merchants.

Gutenberg in Shanghai is a book about the industrial revolution in China's print culture and the ensuing rise of print capitalism ‘with Chinese characteristics.’ It offers a coherent and unique account of the introduction, adaptation and eventual imitation of modern, i.e. Western, print technology in China, with the aim of establishing the material basis on which to study the transition of China's ancient literary culture into the industrial age. It reconstructs the history of print technology from the first cast type matrices to the adaptation of the electrotype process, from photo-lithography to the colour-offset press, from the platen press to the rotary printing press, and tells the stories of three of the most dominant lithograph and letterpress publishers of the late Qing and the early Republican period respectively. This is a worthwhile undertaking, exploring an aspect of modern publishing in China, which hitherto has not received the attention it deserves. The study is based on missionary writings, personal reminiscences, collections of source materials, documents on the early book printers' trade organizations from the Shanghai Municipal Archives, and oral history materials (interviews conducted during the 1950s with former printing workshops apprentices). The bibliography also lists a couple of interviews, but unfortunately it is not clear how relevant they are to the story told in the book. The introduction of lithography into Shanghai by Jesuit missionaries in 1876 plays a pivotal role in this account. Lithography, especially photolithography coming a few years later, was a technology particularly suited to Chinese needs and cheaper than traditional wood-block printing.

As the precious cultural heritage of the Chinese nation, traditional costumes are in urgent need of scientific research and protection. In particular, there are scanty studies on costume silhouettes, due to the reasons of the need for cultural relic protection, and the strong subjectivity of manual measurement, which limit the accuracy of quantitative research. This paper presents an automatic measurement method for traditional Chinese costume dimensions based on fuzzy C-means clustering and silhouette feature point location. The method is consisted of six steps: (1) costume image acquisition; (2) costume image preprocessing; (3) color space transformation; (4) object clustering segmentation; (5) costume silhouette feature point location; and (6) costume measurement. First, the relative total variation model was used to obtain the environmental robustness and costume color adaptability. Second, the FCM clustering algorithm was used to implement image segmentation to extract the outer silhouette of the costume. Finally, automatic measurement of costume silhouette was achieved by locating its feature points. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method could effectively segment the outer silhouette of a costume image and locate the feature points of the silhouette. The measurement accuracy could meet the requirements of industrial application, thus providing the dual value of costume culture research and industrial application.
