When referring to the tangible cultural heritage, people tend to concern more about the conservation and research of the entity of the tangible heritage than the cross-cultural communication of the cultural heritage which is also one of the most important components of the preservation of the cultural heritage. As an exotic new born of the cultural heritage, the entity born from the cross-cultural communication inherits the properties of the cultural heritage on the one hand, and on the other hand generates diversities as a result of the differences based on social, cultural and environment. And the business model is one of the most important reasons for the production of diversities. There’s no doubt that a good form of business model makes great significance to the cross-cultural communication. Therefore, the study of the business model of cultural heritage in the process of cross-cultural communication will not only contributes to the deeper understanding towards the phenomenon of the cultural heritage’s cross-cultural communication, but also leads to the introspection to the tangible cultural heritage itself. In this way, a new kind of conservative notion could take form, and the goal of protecting cultural heritage could be achieved. Thus the Chinese Garden is a typical representation of the cultural heritage which makes great sense in the cross-cultural communication. <br><br> As a kind of tangible cultural heritage, the Chinese gardens are well preserved in different regions in China. While the spirits of the Chinese garden carry forward through the construction of the Chinese gardens abroad during the cross-cultural communication. As a new kind of form of the cross-cultural communication of the cultural heritage, on the one hand, the Chinese gardens overseas built ever since China's Reform and Opening express creatively of the materialist and the spirituality of the traditional Chinese Garden, and on the other hand, those Chinese gardens overseas face all kinds of tough issued such as investment, business model and management. The exploration of the reasons for these tough issues makes a great sense of the study towards the cross-cultural communication and preservation of the cultural heritage. <br><br> In this paper, the development of the whole overseas gardens and the cultural consumption of the Chinese gardens in Europe is generalized, then two typical cases are selected from those two categories mentioned above. By way of field study and interviews, it shows different strategies towards cultural consumption and provides constructive advice for the survival and development of overseas Chinese gardens.

This paper tries to analyze the cultural heritage of ethnic Chinese and overseas Chinese in Vietnam from the perspective of ‘inconvenient heritage,’ focusing on the restoration of ‘the Guangdong Assembly Hall’ located in the ancient quarter of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Firstly, it traces the change in the perspectives and policies of cultural heritage as a resource appropriated for the state-building, nationalism, and the governmentality of the party-state through Vietnam's historical trajectory of cultural heritage management, preservation, and restoration. Secondly, it discusses the possibility of the concept of inconvenient heritage as an instrumental tool, and examines the ‘inconvenient’ historicity of Vietnamese ethnic Chinese, overseas Chinese and Hanoi as the capital city of Vietnam. In particular, it attempts to unravel how the complex history of the Chinese migration and the political vulnerabilities of ethnic Chinese and overseas Chinese unfold the horizon of interpretation of cultural intimacy formed through mutual exchange between Vietnamese and Chinese people. Finally, it tries to analyze the restoration project of the Guangdong Assembly Hall in the ancient quarter of Hanoi in terms of historicity and politics of memory. As a conclusion, this paper suggests that the politics of memory on contemporary cultural heritage such as cultural heritage of a specific population, especially an ethnic minority and immigrant group, is eventually in line with how to secure a horizon of mutual understanding of inherent “inconvenience.”

The most extensive corpus of ancient immovable cultural heritage is that of global rock art. Estimating its age has traditionally been challenging, rendering it difficult to integrate archaeological evidence of early cultural traditions. The dating of Chinese rock art by ‘direct methods’ began in the late 1990s in Qinghai Province. Since then, China has acquired the largest body of direct dating information about the rock art of any country. The establishment of the International Centre for Rock Art Dating at Hebei Normal University has been the driving force in this development, with its researchers accounting for most of the results. This centre has set the highest standards in rock art age estimation. Its principal method, microerosion analysis, secured the largest number of determinations, but it has also applied other methods. Its work with uranium-thorium analysis of carbonate precipitates in caves is of particular significance because it tested this widely used method. The implications of this work are wide-ranging. Most direct-dating of rock art has now become available from Henan, but results have also been reported from Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Jiangsu, Hubei, Guangxi, Yunnan, Qinghai, Tibet, and Xinjiang. Intensive work by several teams is continuing and is expected to result in a significantly better understanding of China’s early immovable cultural heritage.

Abstract. With the rapid urbanization and the sharp increasing of the amount of official identification cultural heritages, the Chinese government and public are paying more attention to the regional comprehensive preservation, exhibition and utilization of the cultural heritages in recent years. “General Plan for Regional Cultural Heritage Preservation” offers a new systematic conservating solution for the cluster of cultural heritages in an administrative region. For the past few years, lots of new spatial information technologies have been applied in the preservation of cultural heritages, which tremendously improved the level and effectiveness of cultural heritage recording, management, monitoring and exhibition. This article will focus on discussing the methods and applying prospect of the technologies of geographic information system, 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry modeling in general planning for regional cultural heritage preservation and utilization. In recent years, with the continuous development of cultural heritage preservation in China, an increasing number of provinces and cities began to organize General Plans for regional cultural heritage preservation (hereinafter called "General Plan"), through which local governments are able to control the risk and improve the preservation level of cultural heritage (IAH, 2004).This paper will introduce the working framework of the General Plan and the core problems to be solved, and then analyze the application mode and prospect of spatial information technology in the General Plan.

It is believed that the historical background of the Chinese community in Malaysia has significant impact on their emotional dimension towards the Malay cultural heritage, which is the heritage of the major ethnic group in Malaysia. This study aimed to examine the emotional expression of the Chinese ethnic towards Malay cultural heritage images in comparison to the Malay ethnic. Three different type of Malay cultural heritage images (Malay traditional food - ketupat, Malay traditional dresses – baju melayu/baju kurung and Malay traditional game – wau bulan) were presented to the Chinese (N=80) and the Malay (N=116) participants, recruited from the undergraduate population of a local institution. Participants self-rated their emotional feedback using a non-verbal pictorial measure (Self-Assessment Manikin) which measured the range of emotional response (valence domain), ranging from one (low valence) to nine (high valence). The Chinese indicated similar level of emotion expression as the Malays in response towards the images of Malay cultural heritage. Both Chinese and Malay showed higher self-rated emotional expression for traditional food image (i.e. ketupat) than non-food images (i.e. Malay dresses and wau bulan). Implication of this study points to the effect of acculturation on the emotional development of the ethnic minority and the emotional property of the food image in constructing the emotion.

Globally, one of the most significant trends in theme park development over the past decade has been the increasing focus on intellectual properties as sources of theming. While theme parks in China have also participated in this trend, cultural history in general and Chinese cultural history and heritage in particular have continued to be popular sources of theming. Chinese theme parks, whether public or private enterprises, have thus contributed to the state-led ‘heritage turn’ in China, which from the 1980s onwards has used cultural history and heritage to foster cultural nationalism. The articles gathered here examine the specific motifs and strategies of the commercial, ‘unauthorized’ heritage turn in Chinese theme parks and, by bridging the gap between English- and Chinese-language research on theme parks, seek to foster interdisciplinary and intercultural scholarly exchange in the field of theme park studies.

The discussion on Chinese cultural heritage started to emerge as a result of inspiration coming from foreign travels of Chinese scholars-officials and as protective measures against looting of artifacts in the 19th and 20th centuries. The most spectacular robberies were carried out by Anglo-French forces in the Old Summer Palace (Yuanming Yuan) during the Second Opium War in 1860. That event became one of the cornerstones of the “century of humiliation” (bainian guochi) in the Chinese historical narrative. Even though the Communist Revolution classified historical sites as remnants of feudalism, today the Communist Party of China has assumed the role of a defender of the Chinese heritage. In contemporary China, its cultural heritage is a phenomenon of both domestic and international significance. The Chinese emphasize the antiquity of the Chinese nation, pointing to the origins of Chinese civilization as early as five thousand years ago. In contemporary China, recovering cultural treasures is important for the political legitimacy of a government and for erasing the national humiliation.

Sakkok area in Singkawang is notorious for its traditional Chinese ceramics industry. These ceramics are produced through a wood-firing process in a closed kiln called Dragon Kiln. Dragon Kiln is the product between culture and technology, which was brought by the Southern Chinese immigrants. The only remaining Dragon Kilns, that are still being used and fired now, are in Singapore and Sakkok, Singkawang. Singkawang city is enlisted as Indonesia’s heritage city, therefore, the city is suggested to empower its heritages. This is supported by the people of Singkawang city, in which some of them are the crafters in the Dragon Kiln area. The highlighted architectural problem in this study is “How the architectural design of Dragon Kiln will maximize its Cultural Heritage potential in order to preserve the Dragon Kiln and Traditional Chinese Ceramics Industry?” The applied method for this study is Revitalization Thinking. Revitalization Thinking is a problem solving method based on revitalizing, done in stages, to maximize the design planning. The concept that is implied is an educative, recreational, and sustainable Cultural Heritage Tourism in order to maximize the Cultural Heritage potential of Dragon Kiln through the development of tourism in preserving the Dragon Kiln and Traditional Chinese Ceramics Industry in Singkawang, Indonesia and South-east Asia.

Chinese traditional culture is the root and soul of the Chinese nation, the soft power of the national culture, and the source to strengthen cultural confidence. As an important part of traditional Chinese culture, folk culture is the basis for telling Chinese stories well. Folk cultural heritage is the golden name card of national culture going to the world, and protecting and inheriting it is an important mission given by the new era. The important discussion on cultural heritage protection is not only a scientific inquiry into the practice of cultural heritage protection, but also points out the direction for cultural tourism to help poverty alleviation work.

This paper investigates the ways languages are used in Philadelphia Chinatown through qualitative content analysis of 330 photos. Examining the linguistic landscape of public spaces exposes issues of linguistic tensions, language vitality, and language shift in multilingual settings. While Chinese in the form of Mandarin is highly publicized, thereby placing disproportionate emphasis upon one language over others, Philadelphia Chinatown shows diversity, coexistence, and creative uses of multiple Chinese languages alongside English. The signage suggests linguistic rescaling connecting real and imagined audiences, conforming to broader ‘Chinese’ linguistic norms while localized to connect to a range of Chineses. We show how linguistic and cultural pluralism of ‘Chinese’ have always existed – and continue to exist – and the importance of developing socially sensitive literacy pedagogy, especially when there is a mismatch between the informal, community-level signage and what is formally taught in ‘Chinese’ language classrooms in the U.S. Keywords: linguistic landscape; Chinatown; Chinese languages; literacy education; heritage language; education

Heritage education can enable social empowerment. Within the broader goal of social empowerment, a current challenge is to establish principles that promote social participation in traditional education. The practice of protecting intangible cultural heritage in China has developed its own unique working model based on the basic theoretical level of UNESCO. This research used cultural citizenship as a theoretical guide, focused on the traditional embroidery craftsmanship of China’s intangible cultural heritage, and conducted exploratory research on the learning intention and value influence indicators of citizens participating in intangible cultural heritage. The research design of this study was divided into two phases: the first phase was designed to collect evaluation indicators that affect the learning of intangible cultural heritage skills, and to support these data using semi-structured in-depth interviews. In the second phase, the convergence of the value indicators that affect the learning of intangible cultural heritage techniques was completed using questionnaire surveys and statistical analyses. Factor analysis was performed using SPSS software. SEM (structural equation modeling) confirmatory analysis was performed using Amos software. Through a two-stage hybrid study, a value recognition scale for the informal educational inheritance of intangible cultural heritage handicrafts was obtained within the local context of China. The scale contains four first-level indicators (ICH’s authenticity, cultural identity, performed value, and social recognition) and 17 second-level indicators. The research results were based on UNESCO’s education indicators for SDG 4, and put forward principles for practices aimed at protecting China’s intangible cultural heritage’s local informal education. Reflecting on the Chinese tradition of citizen participation in protecting intangible cultural heritage could provide references for the practice of intangible cultural heritage protection in other fields and regions. This is consistent with the UN’s SDG 4.7 (ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore authenticity conception of cultural built heritage. As a core of heritage management, authenticity is often seen as a validation of certain identity. In the cultural built heritage context, authenticity is vital for the community, particularly the ethnic minority community, because it can be viewed as a tool to tackle discrimination and misrecognition issues. Design/methodology/approach This research was conducted in two Indonesian Chinatowns, namely, Lasem and Semarang Chinatowns. An ethnography method was employed to address the research aim. Four techniques to carry out data collection were used in this research; they were life story interview, participant observation, documentary research and physical observation through house tour. Two theories were used to analyse the data, and they were Technologies of the Self from Foucault and Habitus from Bourdieu. Findings Result shows that authenticity conception in cultural built heritage is not fixed because it lies on the immaterial aspect (the community’s cultural values) that is continuously reinvented. This research also reveals that the immaterial aspect of cultural built heritage, the community’s cultural values, becomes the core of the conception of authenticity. These cultural values become the foundation for the community to create their cultural built environment. Social implications This research brings an important perspective on authenticity to be applied in heritage management. Interestingly, by adopting this perspective, heritage management could become a tool to create an inclusive society. Originality/value This research offers a unique perspective on heritage authenticity, which was constructed through sociological and materiality approach.

Analyzing the perception differences and influencing factors of cross-cultural groups in heritage tourism can help heritage sites to formulate differentiated service and improve tourist satisfaction. This research adopted the BERT model to undertake sentiment analysis of 17,555 Chinese online reviews for nine scenic spots in Melaka. Using vocabulary filtering, co-occurrence analysis, and semantic clustering technology, the emotional characteristics of Chinese outbound tourists when they visited heritage sites in Melaka were analyzed, which revealed the factors influencing their positive and negative emotions. Results showed that: 1. The BERT-based deep learning approach can obtain improved sentiment predictive performance. 2. Chinese tourists’ general emotional perceptions of Melaka were positive and they were very interested in heritage sites. 3. The most important reason for the negative emotions of Chinese tourists was a lack of cultural experience in Melaka. This research expands the application of deep learning in the field of tourism, and it helps heritage tourism destinations to improve their marketing plans for Chinese tourists and achieve long-term sustainable development of the destination.

China’s intangible cultural heritage as an important part and the soul of the traditional Chinese culture is the cultural treasure of China and even the world. As the concept of cultural protection is deeply rooted in the minds of people, the state attaches increasing importance to intangible cultural heritage. The unique forms of cultural expressions and the special places of these expressions are deeply rooted in the Chinese culture and they should also be an important content in China’s efficient ideological and political education. This article mainly explores the significance of intangible cultural heritage in ideological and political teaching as well as the strategies to effectively integrate intangible cultural heritage into ideological and political teaching in order to achieve the educational purposes of condensing the consensus of traditional Chinese culture, enhancing the cultural consciousness among teachers and students in colleges and universities, and enhancing the patriotic enthusiasm and cultural confidence.

The 24 solar terms, a knowledge system incorporated in the East Asian lunisolar calendar, reflect a typical agricultural life shaped by the astronomical and phenological nature in ancient China. The UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage embodies this Chinese tradition and culture. It is also commonly observed among Chinese diasporas in other parts of the world. Since 1988 when Tan Chai Puan and Tan Hooi Song established 24 Jieling Drums (二十四节令鼓) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia by exploring this Chinese traditional heritage, artistic performances of this vibrant music genre have effectively transmitted drumming aesthetics in Malaysian urban landscape into the Chinese cultural sphere for over three decades. This study explores a characterised link between this millennia-old Chinese cultural heritage and 24 Jieling Drums as an urban cultural landscape in Malaysia, and discusses several issues on the cultural elements applied in a diversified land through the narrative.

For a long time, the concept of the human body has been governed by civil law. Today, this way of treating it is no longer certain. The human body can also be understood as an integral part of cultural heritage. On one hand, this is a question of the holder of the element of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH). On the other hand, it concerns the human body beyond the living person, protected as tangible heritage or cultural property. This article analyses these diverse dimensions of the human body under Chinese legislation on the protection of cultural relics and for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, taking into consideration the respect for human dignity. In this regard, it offers a cross-cutting overview of the ethical and legal challenges surrounding the management and regulation of human remains.

This study investigates attitudes and motivation that influence heritage and non-heritage students’ learning of Chinese as a second language, examining the similarities and differences among three subgroups: bilingual, heritage motivated, and non-heritage learners. The study uses the socio-educational model by Gardner (1985), the internal structure model (Csizér & Dörnyei, 2005), and the attribution theory (Weiner, 1985) for the investigation. Participants were 317 students enrolled in Chinese courses at three state universities in the U.S. The results demonstrated that positive learning attitudes and experience was the factor most predictive of motivational magnitude (intended learning efforts in the present) and direction (intended continuation of study in future). Instrumentality, rated very highly across the three subgroups, appeared as the second significant predictor for intended continuation of study in future) with both groups of heritage learners. Although the bilinguals and heritage motivated learners did not differ significantly in most motivational factors, significant differences were observed between the heritage and non-heritage learners on most other factors. Heritage learners, especially Chinese bilinguals, seemed to be more likely to attribute their success in the course to uncontrollable and/or external factors and failure to internal factors. Heritage learners may desire to learn their heritage language (HL) instead of other foreign languages due to socio-cultural influences. Studies of Chinese heritage learners (Chao, 1997; He, 2008) have demonstrated that learners may study Chinese to search for their ethnic identities and recover the roots of neglected cultural heritage. Research (Fishman, 2001; Valdés, 2001; Li & Duff, 2008; Wiley, 2001) also has shown that heritage and non-heritage learners may differ not only in linguistic and cultural backgrounds but also in socio-psychological and affective dimensions. Considerable work has been done comparing the linguistic similarities and differences between HL and non-HL learners of the same language (see Comanaru and Noels, 2009, for a comprehensive account), but much less has examined learners’ motivational and affective factors in their second language (L2) learning. The present study investigates attitudes and motivation of heritage and non-heritage learners in learning Chinese as a L2 at the university level in the U.S.

The project, undertaken at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, provides access to digital copies of calligraphic and painted Chinese scrolls and fans from the collection donated by Prof Tse-Tsung Chow (Cezong Zhou). Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines the current approaches to multilingual indexing and retrieval in digital collections and presents a model of creating bilingual parallel records that combines translation with controlled vocabulary mapping. Findings – Creating multilingual metadata records for cultural heritage materials is in an early phase of development. Bilingual metadata created through human translation and controlled vocabulary mapping represents one of the approaches to multilingual access in digital libraries. Multilingual indexing of collections of international origin addresses the linguistic needs of the target audience, connects the digitized objects to their respective cultures and contributes to richer descriptive records. The approach that relies on human translation and research can be undertaken in small-scale digitization projects of rare cultural heritage materials. Language and subject expertise are required to create bilingual metadata records. Research limitations/implications – This paper presents the results of a case study. The approach to multilingual access that involves research, and it relies on human translation that can only be undertaken in small-scale projects. Practical implications – This case study of creating parallel records with a combination of translation and vocabulary mapping can be useful for designing similar bilingual digital collections. Social implications – This paper also discusses the obligations of holding institutions in undertaking digital conversion of the cultural heritage materials that originated in other countries, especially in regard to providing metadata records that reflect the language of the originating community. Originality/value – The research and practice in multilingual indexing of cultural heritage materials are very limited. There are no standardized models of how to approach building multilingual digital collections. This case study presents a model of providing bilingual access and enhancing the intellectual control of cultural heritage collections.

This article suggests that Chinese scholars in Guangdong, through historical work endorsed or sponsored by their government, justify the inclusion of Southeast Asian nations in the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road (MSR) initiative. In doing so, they seek to add the MSR to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage List. By exploring how historians and officials adhere to the expectations of the Chinese state and UNESCO in highlighting Guangdong’s role in the 21st-century MSR initiative, the article examines the production of cultural heritage at the local level in contemporary China.

Purpose With the dramatic transformation of China’s industrial landscape, since the late 1990s, adaptive reuse of industrial heritage for cultural purposes has become a widely occurring phenomenon in major Chinese cities. The existing literature mainly focusses on specific cases, yet sees heritage conservation similarly at both national and regional scale and rarely identifies the main factors behind the production of China’s industrial-heritage reuse. The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences in heritage reuse outcomes among three Chinese mega-cities and explore the driving factors influencing the differences. Design/methodology/approach This paper compares selected industrial-heritage cultural precincts in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, and explores the local intervening factors influencing differences in their reuse patterns, including the history of industrial development, the availability of the nineteenth and/or twentieth century industrial buildings, the existence of cultural capital and the prevalence of supportive regional government policy. Findings The industrial-heritage reuse in the three cities is highly regional. In Beijing, the adaptation of industrial heritage has resulted from the activities of large-scale artist communities and the local government’s promotion of the city’s cultural influence; while in Shanghai, successful and more commercially oriented “sea culture” artists, private developers in creative industries and the “creative industry cluster” policy make important contributions. Chongqing in contrast, is still at the early stage of heritage conservation, as demonstrated by its adaptive reuse outcomes. Considering its less-developed local cultural economy, Chongqing needs to adopt a broader range of development strategies. Originality/value The paper contributes to knowledge by revealing that the production of industrial-heritage cultural precincts in Chinese mega-cities is influenced by regional level factors, including the types of industrial heritage, the spontaneous participation of artist communities and the encouragement of cultural policy.

Chinese language education in Indonesia is closely related to the social, political, and cultural dimensions of the country. The change of power in the country in 1998 affected the development of Chinese language. Since the ban imposed on Chinese language and culture since 1965 was lifted, there have been an increasing number of Chinese language schools. Under the theoretical frameworks of Gardner’s motivational orientations and Bourdieu’s cultural capital, this study explored varied motivations of Chinese Indonesians to learn Chinese, and how their perception of China influenced their efforts in learning the language. Data were obtained through focus group discussions and interviews. The findings showed that integrative and instrumental orientations were found among participants, but due to the learners’ social milieu, instrumentality of Chinese dominated their orientations. The instrumentality of Chinese and the positive perception of China worked together to make Chinese language as a cultural capital for these CHL learners.

Cultural heritage is a vital part of a society’s existence. This role has particular relevance for China, with arguably one of the largest stocks of cultural assets, tangible and intangible, in the world. Recognizing the tension between cultural preservation and economic development as a general context, this paper examines the specific additional challenges China faces in its rush towards economic development. In providing both generic and China-specific contexts, this paper has as its objective to understand how Chinese policy-makers, both central and local, attempt to resolve the contest between cultural preservation and economic development, specifically rural rejuvenation. Through two case studies—of Lijiang in Yunnan province and Rizhao in Shandong province—this paper shows contrasting strategies to leverage local intangible cultural assets. Comparing these strategies reveals both the advantages and challenges inherent in each. A successful strategy captures the benefits of cultural tourism while minimizing its costs.

At present, the protection of intangible cultural heritage has received more and more attention from all levels of society. Intangible cultural heritage is a treasure of national culture. It is an indispensable part of Chinese civilization, the crystallization of the wisdom of Chinese civilization, and represents the country’s soft power. The effective organization and management of intangible cultural heritage knowledge is the premise and foundation for the protection, dissemination, and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. Ontology and linked data technology provide a new method and realization path for the organization and management of intangible cultural heritage knowledge. In this paper, the intangible cultural heritage knowledge is organized reasonably semantically based on the method of linked data, and the purpose is to use the structure of linked data to express the resource data of different structures in a structured manner. This paper first introduces the meaning and background of the research and analyzes the relevant research at home and abroad. Second, it introduces the related knowledge of linked data, analyzes and sorts out the elements and semantic relationship of knowledge in the field of intangible cultural heritage, and designs and constructs the ontology model of intangible cultural heritage knowledge, Finally, based on linked data technology, the process of intangible cultural heritage knowledge organization and linked data set construction is studied, including key steps such as entity to RDF, entity association, linked data storage, and publication. The application of linked data technology in the field of intangible cultural heritage knowledge organization and management can promote the standardization and standardization of intangible cultural heritage knowledge management and is of great significance to the protection and inheritance of my country’s intangible cultural heritage culture.

Abstract This paper focuses on the meanings of Confucian heritage for the Chinese ethnic community at the time Australia became a Federation. It will argue that public narratives about Confucian heritage provided a new agency for mobilizing urban Chinese Australian communities. These narratives politicized culture, helped to shape Chinese ethnic identity and diasporic nationalism over time. The appearance of narratives on Confucian heritage in the late 19th century reflected the Chinese community’s attempt to differentiate and redefine itself in an increasingly inimical racist environment. The fact that Chinese intellectuals interpreted Confucian heritage as symbolic of their distinctiveness does not necessarily mean that the Chinese community as a whole aligned themselves with the Confucianism revival movement. By interpreting Confucian heritage as a national symbol, Chinese Australian public narratives reflected a national history in which the Chinese community blended Confucian heritage into a nationalist discourse. This paper argues that this interpretation of Confucian heritage reflects the Chinese community’s attempts to redefine their relationship with the non-Chinese culture, they were a part of, in ways which did not draw on colour or race.

The Old City of Lasem is designated to be National Cultural Heritage Area. Important work in the process includes mapping the cultural heritage area. The participation of the Old City people in the mapping project is ideal because almost all heritages are public places and private houses. This article describes mapping the cultural heritage area, which was carried out with the people of the Old City. This mapping produces a description of the existing condition of material cultural heritage, which consists of 235 buildings with Indies, Chinese-Indies, Chinese, and Chinese-Javanese architecture that represents the glory of Lasem City in the 18–19 AD. Some houses characterize Chinese architecture depicting an older era in Lasem. In addition to the 235 buildings and road network that make up the city’s space, there is also a canal of the Babagan River and several artifacts and features at the Jami Lasem Mosque, including the inscription that determined the establishment of the ancient mosque in the 16th century, ancient “Memolo” which was decorated with the stylized figure of Kala, as well as the tombs of scholars and rulers of Lasem in the 16th Century. Through community participation in mapping the cultural heritage of the Old City, aspirations about the Old City’s heritage preservation are also compiled, resulting in the embryo of a management body for the cultural heritage area of Old Lasem City. Abstract References to native culture are frequently in the foreground of works by Chinese women artists. When they make contact with different cultures, although not necessarily connected with leaving their place of birth thanks to the transfer of information and cultural heritage that has developed extremely efficiently in the era of globalization (Gordon Mathews), they see their own entanglement in the cultural tradition. In the process of constructing their identity they try to find answers to the following question: which part of the cultural tradition is mine? Which one do I identify with? In the case of Chinese women artists, is it the legacy of literati? Classic ink painting and calligraphy? Or perhaps women's crafts that bear no name? Or perhaps a mixture of inspirations? Such questions about material heritage might also be augmented by others that consider aspects of the immaterial heritage of China. This article explores how Chinese women artists such as Chen Qingqing, Qin Yufen, Shi Hui, Wang Xiaohui, Cheng Caroline, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Yanzi, Man Fung-yi, Liu Liyun, Peng Wei, Chen Lingyang, Chen Qiulin, Zhang Ou and Liu Ren refer to their cultural tradition.

Abstract Previous research has demonstrated that the increasing importance of Mandarin in education and public life has led many younger Chinese-Malaysians to regard Mandarin as their mother tongue and part of their cultural identity rather than a heritage language. Fewer studies have documented the language repertoires of middle-aged and older Chinese-Malaysians. This paper presents a qualitative study of Mandarin use conducted with six Chinese-Malaysians aged 40 and older. The participants reported extensive use of Mandarin in the domains of home, work, religion and cultural maintenance, which were served by a heritage language in the past. This indicates that the use of Mandarin by the older generation Chinese-Malaysians to engage with the contemporary linguistic world is influenced by hegemonic local and global factors. This study therefore highlights the significance of Mandarin as both an element of cultural identity and an instrument of heritage language loss.

Intangible cultural heritage is the core of Guangzhou’s cultural “soft power”. The Chinese-English translation of intangible cultural heritage is an important way to promote Guangzhou’s culture and to arouse the awareness of protecting intangible cultural heritage in the whole society. The culture-specific items in the publicity texts of intangible cultural heritage reflect the charm and heterogeneity of Guangzhou’s culture. This paper proposes that while translating cultural-specific items of Guangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage, in order to ensure that the translation can retain the cultural characteristics of the source language and be understood and accepted by the target language readers, translators should combine the translation strategies of Domestication and Foreignization and flexibly adopt seven methods, i.e., literal translation, literal translation plus transliteration, literal translation plus explanation, transliteration plus explanation, transliteration plus category words, transliteration plus intra-text explanation and transliteration plus free translation. Suggestions are also given aiming to provide reference for the researches and practice of the translation of intangible cultural heritage in Guangzhou and other cities. It is also hoped that this study can provide some implications for pedagogical application and be helpful for those who follow closely the translation of intangible cultural heritage.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the attractiveness of the Tong Ren Tang (TRT) as a Chinese corporate heritage tourism brand and consider the significance of TRT for Chinese national identity. The study considers the saliency of Balmer’s augmented role identity notion vis-à-vis corporate heritage institutions/corporate brands. Insights are made from and for corporate heritage, heritage tourism and national identity literature. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual model comprising five hypotheses was developed and this informed a survey-based questionnaire administered to domestic tourists/customers visiting Tong Ren Tang’s flagship shop in Beijing. Findings The attractiveness to domestic Chinese tourists/customers of the TRT corporate heritage tourism brand was found to be attributable to its multiple role identities: national, corporate, temporal, familial and imperial. As such, this study lends credence to Balmer’s augmented role identity notion. Chinese domestic tourists/customers – as members of an ethnic Chinese community – in visiting TRT not only consume an extant corporate heritage by tangible and intangible means but can also be seen to express, and reaffirm, their sense of Chinese national identity. Practical implications For TRT’s managers, there should be an appreciation that the attractiveness of TRT as a corporate heritage tourism brand rests not only on what it sells but also in what it symbolises in national and cultural terms. This finding is applicable to the managers of many other corporate heritage/corporate heritage tourism brands. Social implications Adopting a primordial perspective, the TRT pharmacy was found to be of singular significance to China’s national identity. Traditional Chinese Medicine, Confucian and Daoist religious/philosophical and China’s erstwhile Imperial polity are significant and enduring precepts of Chinese national identity. As such the TRT flagship shop/brand is of singular importance, as China has eviscerated much of its cultural heritage – particularly in relation to its corporate heritage brands. Originality/value This is the first empirical study to focus on corporate heritage tourism brands and one of the first studies to examine a Chinese corporate heritage/corporate heritage tourism brand. Also significant in focussing on the TRT corporate heritage brand. Established in 1669, TRT’s history spans five centuries: a corporate provenance which is exceptional within the People’s Republic of China. The study links the corporate brand notion with the nascent corporate heritage brand domain and the established area of heritage tourism.

Abstract Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, many young people emigrated from Guangdong to the American West in search of a better living, mainly through building the Pacific Railroad and panning for gold in California. Some of these overseas Chinese who eventually accumulated wealth sent remittances back to their hometowns to provide their families with a better life, or they built mansions for their own retirement. They also used their wealth to renovate ancestral halls, establish schools, get involved in local politics and issues of local public security, public hygiene, etc. The overseas Chinese were one of the important new rising social strata in modern China before the 1960s. This paper will focus on translocal Chinese cultural heritage in Guangdong and try to discuss how people memorize, narrate, preserve, and represent their migration history in these hometowns. Meanwhile, the meaning of the tangible cultural heritage as a landscape of memories in local society in China will also be discussed. Firstly, I think that there are three types of overseas Chinese memories: the memory of suffering, the memory of making fortunes, and the memory of a philanthropic image; secondly, I will deal with the narrative and representation of the collective memories since the 1990s and check how the collective memory became the cultural heritage beneath the state’s discourse; and finally, I will analyze how the overseas Chinese cultural heritage became resources for cultural tourism and local economic development, and show a process of commercialization of those landscapes.

Among the Chinese companies that run the great majority of theme parks in China, Fantawild is the quickest-expanding one, with more than two dozen full-fledged theme parks and many in development. The newest of their three primary theme park models, Oriental Heritage, employs traditional Chinese cultural material and specifically Chinese folklore and legends for its attractions and shows. The park thus differentiates itself not only from Fangte's previous park models, Adventure and Dreamland, which have often been derivative of other, Western park themes and ride systems, but also from the glocalizing approaches of such Western companies as Disney or Universal. Combining Chinese stories and heritage with new and innovative ride systems, Oriental Heritage also differs markedly from the ‘ethnic culture parks’ whose performative open-air displays dominated the first boom phase of the theme park in China during the mid-1990s. With its traditional Chinese architectural style, Chinese intellectual property or cultural traditions, and technically ambitious ride systems, the ‘high-tech theme park full of stories’, as it refers to itself, marks the culmination of Fangte's brand evolution from the imitative Adventure and Dreamland models to the confidently Chinese Oriental Heritage concept, making Fangte a particularly interesting and potentially representative model of where the Chinese theme park industry could be headed.

The paper will focus on how history is reshaped in a case study: the film adaptation of Oliver Twist (2005). It is of significance as its Chinese authorised subtitles mediate nineteenth-century British history for a contemporary Chinese audience. But this adaptation creates various problems of translation as it negotiates the cultural and linguistic transfer between early Victorian England and twenty-first-century China. To illustrate the challenge that translators and audiences face, examples drawn from the subtitles are grouped under Eva Wai-Yee Hung’s (1980) suggested aspects of Dickens’s world: “religious beliefs, social conventions, biblical and literary allusions and the dress and hairstyle of the Victorian era”. Moreover, Andrew Higson’s “heritage” theory (1996a), William Morris’s (Bassnett, 2013) views of historical translation and Nathalie Ramière’s (2010) cultural references specific to Audiovisual Translation are adopted to read the Chinese subtitles. They are used to bring back the audiences to an impossible, inaccessible past. The historical features shown in this modern version of a British heritage film make it possible for the subtitles to interact with Chinese culture to transfer meaning via a complex combination of translation strategies. Therefore, in order to rejuvenate Chinese cultural heritage, the subtitles of the cultural and temporal specificities and complexities involved are reinterpreted and redirected to the receiving culture

At present, in terms of the architectural heritage protection, the rapid development of Chinese economics and the accelerating urbanization process have caused a great deal of "constructive destructions" to the architectural heritage and have accelerated its demise. In order to change the situation and to deepen the people's understanding to the value of the architectural heritage, the paper will make further analysis and research on the culture value and economics value from the view of cultural economics and then give the architectural heritage the third-largest value -- social value. In this study, we aimed to implement information obtained and refined from garden elements in heritage conservation, monitoring, and management to precisely construct an information model of classical Chinese gardens, including information on the garden entity, garden space, and garden attributes, etc., and to improve the management efficiency of classical Chinese royal gardens. Three-dimensional laser scanning technology and point cloud information were used to accurately collect and process digital information from classical Chinese royal gardens. After classifying and processing the point cloud data, correlations therein could be further assessed and used to greatly improve the accuracy and management efficiency of spatial information. To provide a more convenient solution for the subsequent conservation and management of landscape heritage, a method for establishing a three-dimensional digital information database and a full life-cycle application management platform for classical Chinese royal gardens is proposed in this research. This method has broad applications for the digital conservation and management of cultural heritage.

There are subjects for which there should be no alternatives. It is not a question whether it is necessary to protect and study cultural and historical heritage. There should not be any alternatives. We continue to publish materials on the heritage of different periods of history and different parts of the world. The Russian-Chinese theme is consistently studied in the works of Pacific University scholars. Even when careless officials remove cultural monuments from the lists, the public and the professional community speak up. This time, an entire historic quarter in Irkutsk is under threat. Students and professionals stood up to defend two old stone buildings. They backed up their position with the development of the ensemble and the creation of a new system of public spaces inlaid in the historic centre of the city.

Manado is a predominantly Christian community and dominated by indigenous Minahasa tribes. But, now the city is populated by various inhabitants such as Sangir, Gorontalo, Maluku, and even foreign immigrants such as China and Arab migrating since the Dutch colonial era. Of the various communities that exist, practically only the Chinese community that still maintains its rituals amid strong advances in the tourism industry, this cultural practice can become an icon for cultural tourism. However, can the cultural ritual be accepted as an icon of Manado cultural tourism? This research was in the form of a descriptive qualitative approach. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires and field observations. Questionnaires were distributed to 325 respondents spread in Manado. Empirical results showed that every ritual attraction of Chinese Culture had always been awaited and an interesting spectacle for the people of Manado since the people of Chinese descent domiciled in Manado City. These findings could also provide recommendations for policymakers in setting annual tourist agendas as well as providing legal certainty for this region of Chinatown with various attractions as a cultural heritage area.

Abstract This paper focuses on the recent development of the National Cultural Information Resources Sharing Project in China. This is a national scale project that was initiated by the Chinese central government and has stimulated immense academic attention. Specifically, this paper attempts to understand people’s expectations and requirements on the project. Moreover, this paper aims to articulate and provide specific and useful suggestions for relevant politicians and project operators so that public expectations and requirements can be carefully met. A survey was used to sample a very large and widely distributed population in China, with a questionnaire designed and disseminated through an online survey service platform. A total of 1,076 usable responses were returned and 29 invalid response cases were discarded, yielding an effective response rate of 97.3 percent. An evident public expectation has emerged from the data collected which shows that the Chinese public primarily expects a comprehensive, convenient and unified one stop online access portal to all types of Chinese digital cultural heritage. This paper is of interest to Chinese government officials as well as professionals working at libraries, museums, archives and other cultural institutions in China. Furthermore, although the context of this study is China, the research findings, insights and experiences gained in this study can be shared across international borders.

Although Chinese Kesiorigin is being recognized in various ways at present, yet its history of textual research lasts at least more than two thousand years. Moreover, a change occurred in Song Dynasty that high-grade works of art of Kesi paintings and calligraphies emerged, which formed the peak of Chinese Kesi art. In Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Kesi in the south region of Yangtze River inherited the skill of that in the Southern Song Dynasty, but it gradually declined after the Republican Period. After new China was founded, Kesi developed vigorously in Suzhou, and it had already been enrolled to the National Non-material Cultural Heritage list. This paper aims to explain the origin, the mutation, and the inheritance carrying of Chinese Kesi, then make a summary concerning the regulation. Not only will a clear cognition be made based on the previous research, but also it might be usible for reference about the protection of non-material cultural heritage in the future.
