T’ao Yüan-ming (365-427 A.D.) remains China's greatest medieval poet. While no adequate biographical sources exist, the poet’s own work presents the most intimate picture of T’ao Yüan-ming himself, in addition to reflecting various aspects of his historical and cultural era. This essay explores T’ao Yüan-ming’s character as reflected in his verse. When poised against a broader historical and cultural background, T’ao Yüan-ming’s poetry goes furthest in revealing the poet as an individual as well as a product of his times.

Han Yu is famous in Chinese history both for his literature and for his defense of Confucianism at a time when it was being seriously challenged by Buddhism and religious Taoism. Although his influ- ence was limited during his own lifetime, in later times Han Yu came to symbolize the conservative Confucian values that are often identi- fied with the traditional Chinese state. This study examines Han Yu's life and thought in an attempt to determine to what extent his later image as an ideal Confucian was or was not justified. A chapter on the historical background provides the context for Han Yu's biography, which is divided into five chap- ters. This is followed by a chapter discussing the intellectual back- ground of Han Yu's thought. Two further chapters discuss, first, the basis of Han Yu's conservative image, and, second, a number of his writings which illustrate the limits of his conservatism. Han Yu's ideas are related to the political and social circumstan- ces of his times, and it is found that while he is indeed a conservative and a Confucian, the extent of both his conservatism and his Confucian orthodoxy have been exaggerated.

This thesis examines the life and poetry collection of the woman poet Li Shuyi (1817--?) within the context of women's literary culture in late imperial China. In particular, the textuality of Li Shuyi's poetry collection Shuyinglou mingshu baiyong (One Hundred Poems from Shuying Tower on Famous Women) forms the centre of critical analysis, which aims to articulate her gendered intervention into representations of women's image in poetry. The thesis is organized into three interconnected sections: the reconstruction of Li Shuyi's life in order to provide a context to articulate her relationship to writing, a reading of Li Shuyi's self-preface to discuss her motivation to write, and critical analysis of poems according to the three thematic categories of "beauty, talent, and qing ." The thesis demonstrates how a woman author's self-perception leads to her becoming a conscious writing subject, and how this self-realization then motivates her to produce a gendered writing project.

This thesis examines the life and poetry of the woman poet Gu Taiqing (1799-1877) within the context of a community of gentry women in mid-nineteenth century Beijing. This group of women was a "community" in the sense that their contact, sociability, friendship and poetry writing were meaningfully intertwined in their lives. The thesis is divided into three interconnected chapters. Two separate biographical accounts of Gu Taiqing's life---one centered around the relationship with her husband, and the second around her relationship with her female friends---are reconstructed in the first chapter. This biographical chapter underlines the importance of situating Gu in the women's community to understand her life and poetry. The second is comprised of a reconstruction of this women's community, delineating its members and distinctive features. In the third chapter, a close-reading of Gu's poems in relation to the women's community focuses on the themes of xian (leisure), parting, and friendship. This chapter shows how each of these themes are represented by Gu and how her representations are closely related to the experiences of this women's group.

Knittler, Konstanze Amelie. "Motivations and patterns of collecting : George Salting, William G. Gulland and William Lever as collectors of Chinese porcelain." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2811/.

The collecting of Chinese ceramics had become an increasingly popular activity in late 19th-century Britain. Whereas the 18th century was characterised by an interest in porcelain for the purpose of interior design, the political developments between China and Britain enabled a new approach to Chinese cultural identity; different Chinese material became available in the wake of the Second Opium War (1856-1860) and the subsequent sacking of the Imperial Summer Palace of Yuanmingyuan, and this material entered Britain for the first time. Due to the opening of China to foreign merchants, Britons now could move freely in the country and gain access to ‘luxury goods’ such as porcelain. As a result, a different taste for Chinese porcelain emerged and developed, which would reflect on the collecting scene in Britain. This thesis examines the motivations and collecting patterns of three British collectors (George Salting, William G. Gulland and William Lever) in the context of late 19th- and early 20th-century Chinese porcelain collecting. All three men built significant collections in the given period, which entered national institutions by gift and/or bequest, as well as a purpose built gallery in one case. Nonetheless the collectors’ achievements in the field of Chinese ceramics have not been analysed extensively and therefore the present thesis aims at complementing the existing research. The study makes predominant use of primary unpublished material on the three collections, which enables conclusions to be drawn on the incentive and approach of these collectors in accumulating Chinese artefacts during this period. In consideration of those findings, it will be argued whether their collecting encouraged an underlying common motif and how their tastes matched the general concept of collecting porcelain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first chapter provides an introduction to the subject, and will be followed by a historical abstract of 19th-century collecting in Britain and a review of the published literature in the second chapter. The third chapter examines the collecting activity of the oldest collector, George Salting, by analysis of his purchase activity and the bequest of his Chinese porcelain collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The fourth chapter considers the collecting of William G. Gulland, whose first-hand experience of East Asia prompted him to collect and publish books on Chinese porcelain. The fifth chapter will look into the collecting principles of William Lever, whose Chinese collection stands in contrast to his overall British taste. The conclusion in the sixth chapter will summarise the major points of the preceding chapters and it will put the achievements of the three collectors into perspective with the general idea of collecting Chinese porcelain in Britain in the period under discussion.

The intellectual world of the late Ming literati was without question one of great richness and complexity. The focus of the present study, however, is limited to an examination of Wang Ken, the man, his key philosophical beliefs, and his role in the founding of the T'ai-chou School of thought. In exploring the genesis of Wang Ken and his school of thought, certain aspects of the social milieu are examined in order to reach a better understanding of how the larger environment and this radical intellectual movement became intertwined. In other words, I have attempted to discern and define the interplay of the most important creative minds of the time, and particularly those of the elite class with this group. As a teacher and thinker Wang Ken exercised a considerable influence on his times, contributing in the process to the new permissiveness so characteristic of the latter half of the Ming dynasty. In this regard, the present study also represents an attempt to discover the basic patterns underlying Wang Ken's thought, as well as the T'ai-chou School's responsiveness to dramatic changes in society. In doing so, we perceive an implication of intellectual autonomy in the form of social and political protest against imperial autocracy. Also, the spread of his faith in an attainable and intelligible sagehood among the lower classes, gradually blurred the dividing line between elite and commoner. Finally, the assertions of Wang Ken and the T'ai-chou School indeed stimulated a new sense of self-awareness and self-worth. Nevertheless, it is because of its radical rejection of the established social, political, and intellectual order that the T'ai-chou School has been branded as heterodox. As a result, the frustration of its aspiration for a more genuine humanity was inevitable, as this intellectual movement fell victim to the forces of orthodoxy and conformity.

In Western scholarship, eighteenth century Chinese paintings have consistently been seen as playful, eccentric, and odd. This characterization has been based on the formal qualities of some of the paintings. At the same time, Chinese scholars have written of the scholarly virtues and ambitions of the painters producing the works. The contradiction between these two interpretations is in part consistent with the Western and Chinese approaches generally. But it also stems from the mixed signals and information generated in the eighteenth century. The nature of painting, not just formally, but socially has yet to be explained in a way which takes into account some actual historical contradictions of the eighteenth century. In order to explain these historical tensions, I combine a biographical (Chinese) approach with a contextual approach (Western) in a study of two different scholar painters, Zheng Xie and Li Shan. I juxtapose biographical sources with artworks, and less official writings relating Zheng Xie and Li Shan, in order to describe the tensions involved in painting for the literatus within the merchant culture of Yangzhou. These tensions existed between the literatus' expected status and that granted him, between his ideal of the role of painting in the scholar's life and the implications of commercial painting, and between his emphasis upon poetry and his popularity as a painter. In all cases, the tensions in eighteenth century literati painting arise from the difficult relationship between the painter and patron, and between the painter and the ideas of a broader public. The lack of a clear definition of "scholar" and "scholar painting" amongst literati illustrates the literatus' loss of control over the definition of his lifestyle.

Dr. Kwan Hsu was neither a superstar nor a celebrity. Her name does not come up in conversations about important contributors to her field of biophysics nor is she instantly recognizable for her contributions to Portland State University's international program or the state of Oregon's business ties with China. Yet she was a contributor, a cog-in-the-wheel, at the very least, in all of these areas and more. She was a peripheral member of a well-known Chinese family, but few in the United States know of or perhaps have interest in, but otherwise, she had no great connections or family ties to generate interest in her story. How does one process a collection for a woman who does not meet the traditional criteria for excellence or success or public interest for an archive? Where is the value to the larger historical narrative of our time in preserving the memories of someone who was non-remarkable, or, conversely, someone who may be even too unique to contribute to that greater narrative? These are the questions I wrestled with when I first came to this collection. As my research progressed, I realized that I faced more questions, and that to come to any understanding that might answer them, I was going to have to research the history of archives and archival processes. Science, the Cold War, Communist China, women, the immigrant experience, all of these issues became part of my thesis, however shallowly I was able to investigate them. Questions of identity and historiography, of power and discourse were explored. In the end, what I found was that a collection that on the outside looked unimpressive and unenlightening, could indeed be very valuable, and provide insight into any number of areas of current interest in historical research. This is that story.

The subject addressed in this research concerns access to independent reading for the learners of Chinese as a foreign language. For a learner who is a native user of alphabetical writing systems, Chinese is a “geographically, culturally and linguistically distant language” (Bellassen, 2014). Therefore, it seemed necessary to explore under which conditions a learner starts independent reading and to establish a “Threshold of characters to Access First Readings in Autonomy” (TAFRA). This study is based on an investigation conducted with a study sample consisting of over 300 learners with whom we try to establish a language biography as well as to constitute a corpus of authentic first-read texts. The analysis of this material allows to better understand how a non-reader becomes an independent reader and to establish the “TAFRA” list. This study provides interesting insight into future learning as well as pedagogy

Historiography has always been a major discipline in Imperial China, producing among other works the encyclopedic corpus known as the Twenty-Six Standard Histories. This dissertation aims at examining the place dedicated to medicine and physicians in this corpus. Written following a very specific modus operandi, the Standard Histories provide the readers numerous biographies of experts in medicine (yi 醫). As we know today, these texts were more prescriptive than descriptive, and one should not base any serious historical study of medicine on these sources alone. The question then is how to make the most out of the large amount of information they bring to scholarly attention. To answer this question, I first propose a synthetic overview of historical writings in China, of the textual genres to which they belong, with a special focus on the biographical genre, and then undertake a statistic and analytic study of the place dedicated to medicine in Chinese historical records. The second part of the dissertation deals more specifically with the one hundred and forty-two biographies of physicians contained in the Standard Histories: after having identified, classified and analyzed all of their contents, I set out the uses that can be made of this huge piece of information in the fields of textual criticism, social history, and the history of medicine

This work deals with the life of an exceptional Chinese woman, Yuding, who was born in 1928 in China. It questions the way she has taken up totally paradoxical ways of life, kinship, and union, while living through incredibly uneven times - the beginning of the Republican era, the Second Sino-Japanese war, the civil war, the revolutionary era, the socialist society, and the current globalization. Yuding, presently 87, has kept faith in the venture proposed by the Maoist China, despite underlying wounds left by this violent period. Born in a leading family broken in to Confucian orthopraxy (rituality, morality, worship of the ancestors), Yuding then undergoes the influence of another “formatting” this of Maoism and its revolutionary doctrine. Very quickly, the traditional ideology of “filial devotion” passed on by her parents makes way for complete devotion to the Communist Party. Passionate activist from the Liberation, she leads an active life within the Women's Federation. French interpreter, she is brought round to traveling as much in Europe as in Africa, at a period during which very few persons were going out China. Yet, being an intellectual, she is sent to a labour camp “School of the Seventh of May” in 1968, but she doesn't lose her unquestioning adherence to the Party ideology. There soon won't be anybody from her generation, who was pioneer in the building of the People's Republic of China, to give accounts of this era. Her biography is a testimony of this exceptional experience

This dissertation deals with "the Chinese mind", which means the national character of China. Its main argument is that psychological variable is the key to understand and to explain how China behaves. In fact, the author uses a "psycho-cultural" approach to analyze Chinese political behaviors and diplomatic crises. To do so, two heads of State, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, are studied. The behaviors of these Chinese leaders are therefore supposed to refer to the State’s behaviors. Empirically, two exercises are involved to psychologically study these political figures: their biography for one part (in the first part of the dissertation) and their conducts during bilateral crises for another (in the second part of the dissertation) – The author collects hundreds of public and private speeches of the two Chinese leaders in order to scientifically analyze their psychological patterns. Alongside the content analysis, the author heavily relies on a quantitative method, the discourse analysis, to decode the speeches of Jiang and Hu from 1989 to 2011 and to assess, at a distance, the two Chinese leaders’ psychocultural profile. Seven concepts the most pronounced in the political culture of China are selected in the exercise. These elements are treated as indices to generate quantitative data from speeches and to test the validity of such “psychocultural” hypothesis. These seven concepts are: nationalism-patriotism, harmony, hierarchy, filial piety, face, guanxi (interpersonal relationship), and the fear of luan (chaos). Combined qualitative and quantitative analysis, this research successfully proves the constant influence of "psychoculture" in China’s behaviors, particularly in the circumstances of diplomatic crises

This study aims to examine whether equivalence effect of translation of the characteristics of stream-of-consciousness is achieved in both Chu Nai-chang’s and Chen Hui-hua’s Chinese translations of Orlando: A Biography. Based on the semantic translation method proposed by Peter Newmark, the adaption of this book is the first Woolf-related movie released in Taiwan and considered to be an important work familiarized by the Taiwanese underlining the importance of studying on the book’s translations. In addition, there are few studies of translations of stream of consciousness on this novel owing to putting too much focus on its feminism. The abovementioned reasons explain why this book is chosen for further study. According to Professor Li Gen-fang’s study published in 2013, six distinguishable characteristics of stream-of-consciousness are found in Orlando: A Biography. They are categorized into two parts for discussion, including poetic languages and cinematic elements. This study adopts semantic translation to tell whether the six features of stream of characteristics in the original are completely presented as they should have in Chinese translations. Two results are concluded after six special features of stream of consciousness under study are comprehensively analyzed. First, the two translations basically take advantage of the communicative translation to deal with stream of consciousness. However, only the “image demonstration” is completely represented in Chu’s translation version. Second, in order to match target-language readers’ reading habits, both translations basically are translated in a too concise style that leads to the disappearance of these characteristics, even resulting in omission and inaccuracy. Therefore, neither of the translations achieves the fulfillment of the equivalence effect. The translations of Orlando: A Biography in Taiwan fail to maintain the artistic value of Woolf’s creative writing so that domestic readers are unable to experience diverse features of stream of consciousness. Based on the conclusions, it is sincerely hoped that this study can provide translators with some constructive advice and extend research direction to investigate Woolf’s unique writing style on the stream of consciousness.

Late Qing Period witnessed an unprecedented boom of translated biographies, especially those focusing on Western heroes, but till now most texts have not received sustained critical attention from scholars in Chinese studies. From today’s point of view, those translated biographies not only portray new heroes, but also disseminate new ideas and new structure of feeling, which necessitate a thorough and in-depth research. My dissertation, based on a full-scale survey of the above-mentioned translated biographies, attempts to explore how late Qing intellectuals appropriated and recast foreign texts, images of Western heroes and alien ideas, and how they transformed traditional Chinese hero models by integrating a wide range of indigenous and foreign resources. I would like to focus on four groups of key texts by considering their impact, originality, and the influence of their originals: the biographies of Columbus, Garibaldi, Bismarck and Nelson translated or adapted by Liang Qichao, his anonymous colleagues, Lin Wanli and the journalist of an illustrated daily newspaper published in Shanghai.
My dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter One examines the genealogy of Western heroes constructed by late Qing intellectuals. I will demonstrate that although Meiji Japanese biographies had a dominant influence, late Qing translators showed a strong autonomy when selecting texts for translation to meet their political and cultural concerns. From Chapter Two to Chapter Five, I will center on the biographies of four heroes, also representing four roles Liang Qichao played in shaping late Qing translated biographies, and four approaches of late Qing translators’ integration of indigenous and foreign thoughts. My cases studies begin with the translated biographies of Columbus, and my discussion will focus on the influence of the missionaries’ discourse of knowledge and Liang Qichao’s discourse of public morality (gongde) on the translated biographies. Special attention will be given to Liang Qichao’s construction of adventurous spirit (jinqu maoxian) on the basis of Meiji Japanese discourse. By appropriating Liang’s concept as well as Confucianism ideas, late Qing translators portrayed Columbus as an embodiment of public morality. Chapter Three pays attention to the translated biographies of Garibaldi. My analysis covers a wide range of texts from Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao’s early discourse on Chinese knight-errant (xia), Liang’s translated biographies of Garibaldi, to various derivative texts. This chapter will examine how late Qing translators revitalize and transform the Chinese minor tradition of knight-errant worship by assimilating Confucian discourse and nationalism discourse. Chapter Fours will give closer scrutiny to the translated biographies of Bismarck, a problematic figure whose use of diplomatic sleight of hand and political trickery contradicts Confucius’ moral doctrine. However, fascinated by his great achievement of German unification, late Qing translators all attempt to defend Bismarck by appropriating concepts of Pre-Qin Philosophers (zhuzi xue) and nationalism. Chapter Five discusses the biographies of Nelson. Liang Qichao’s essays marked the beginning of interpreting the military figure as an embodiment of honor and adventurous spirit. Lin Wanli and other translators, under Liang’s influence, strove to redefine the concept of honor and bravery by drawing elements from Confucianism. They also put a lot of emphasis on Nelson’s love affairs and in so doing, introduced elements of popular fiction and drama into biographical writings.

This thesis examines the writings of six mainland Chinese women writers - Ru Zhijuan, Shen Rong, Zhang Jie, Zhang Kangkang, Zhang Xinxin and Wang Anyi - belonging to three different generations as a reflection of the changing attitudes of Chinese urban intellectual women to literature and society in the period 1978-1989. Underlying the various generational differences that emerge from a thematic analysis of their writing are two related trends: a trend away from collective orientation in the older writers' works towards literature centred on the individual and the self in the younger writers' works; and that of the younger writers away from the Chinese socialist and Confucian traditions that guided socialist literature in mainland China prior to 1978. The trend away from socialist literary traditions is most palpable in the writers' treatment of history and contemporary society. Whereas veteran writer Ru Zhijuan's presentation of pre-1949 history perpetuated state myths of the Party's glorious past, the younger writers challenged both the model of the heroic communist soldier and the use of class stereotypes to depict wider society that had been established in earlier Chinese socialist literature. Whereas social and political issues were central to the older writers' fiction about the period from 1949, the younger women's writing tended to focus on characters and their psychological development. The writers' treatment of love, sex and marriage showed a strong trend away from Confucian moral values in the younger writers' fiction that intensified over the 1978-1989 period. Although all the writers presented a pessimistic view of actual marriages, and promoted marriage based on love as the ideal, the younger writers showed a much greater acceptance of blameless divorce and pre- and extra-marital sexual relationships than their older counterparts.

The increasing migration is a challenge for public health, combining the complexity of the health determinants of immigrants with the heterogeneity of the indigenous population. The detailed study of their impact, whether for the country of origin, transit or reception, or for the migrant and autochthonous population, becomes relevant. Based on this configuration, this Master's Dissertation aims to understand the trajectories adopted by Chinese immigrant in Portugal when they seek health care - be it disease prevention and health maintenance, or cure of the disease. The methodological option relied on the use of life history - following the life trajectory of a young Chinese woman living in Martim Moniz - where the intention was to articulate the dimensions of her migratory process with the concepts of health / illness. The issue of disease prevention does not find a positive answer - assuming that the interlocutor does not perform preventive health care, while as a resolution to health problems, two possible routes are suggested: on the one hand, to resort to the permanent care/urgencies, another to return to the country of origin. In the first reality, we must take into account the inoperability of a health system that places barriers to immigrants' access and immersion in a social and cultural context that assumes itself as deeply different from the one of origin; the second reality involves fundamental elements as the speed of responses, their effectiveness and, it should be emphasized, the familiarity in the treatments found in the country of origin. It was also noticed that the health care trajectories are not calculated in a random way, but rather by following their own dynamics, in a constant negotiation between the discourse of rupture with the ancestry and the need to return home.
