The review article of Markus Krajewski's Paper Ma- chines: About Cards Catalogues, 1548-1929 (Cambridge - London: The MIT Press 2011) traces the con- ceptual history of the card catalogue while emphasizing the transforma- tion of library catalogues from bound and printed books into systems of standardized and mobile paper slips. It focuses primarily on the influence of material conditions of knowledge production on the nature of scientific knowledge and its classification - in this regard, it also analyzes the card catalogue system of Niklas Luhmann as an example of three-dimensional writing, in which his theory of social systems is written.

Abstract In contemporary academic philosophy, Chinese Philosophy remains a niche. This has a lot to do with its presentation, which often creates an impression of alienness and allegory, making its contribution, especially to analytical questions, not obvious. This paper examines how a change in presentation eases the inclusion of Chinese Philosophy into the mainstream. On the assumption that there has been an “activist turn” in the discipline in general, philosophical interest in a tradition that ranges from conceptual analysis, to ethics and politics, but that is ultimately focused on motivating actions, becomes more relevant and pressing. Since, in much of Chinese Philosophy, the philosopher is an activist, if the wider discipline is indeed undergoing an “activist turn”, then there is a connection here that should be made. In this paper, the connection is explained using two examples, Mozi and Xu Fuguan.

An analysis of what the concepts and practices of philosophy, dialectics, sophistics are in the context of Western and Chinese paradigms of philosophy, is suggested in the article. Western philosophic tradition is based on the so-called Antique paradigm that exceeds from the idea of attaining happiness and avoiding suffering before the face of alien threatening reality, then it passes through the so-called Abrahamic paradigm in its Christian version with its ideas of monotheism and creationism and achieves the modern scientific paradigm at last based on nature science. Dialectics appeared in the frame of the Antique paradigm; three levels may be pointed out in it: Socratic where dialectics is a method of reasoning or teaching by means of oral conversation, Platonic as an approach that considers opposites not as excluding but supplementing each other, Hegelian and later Marxist where dialectics becomes an approach based on the principle of development. They correspond approximately to the according paradigm transitions in the Occident philosophy. Traditional Chinese philosophic paradigm is organismic and its organismism is conditioned with clan structure of the traditional Chinese society where all relations between people are subdivided clearly into inner (inside of one’s clan) and outer (outside of it) ones. Traditional Chinese ethics blames anything that can break piece and harmony inside of their own group. Disputes can convince nobody, they can only affront and destroy agreement inside of the group. From here the aphoristic character of the traditional Chinese philosophy comes, that supposes using of separate aphorisms and stories in place of logical arguments and systematical expound. These aphorisms and stories fall down into one’s memory and make one to come to one’s own conclusions. If intellectual gap at transition from the Antique to the Medieval Abrahamic paradigm was connected with rereading and reinterpretation of the corresponding philosophic texts, then in China it represented only a finishing of the same, existing paradigm through its narrowing. They were different historical conditions and cultures which determined different algorithms of development but nevertheless demonstrate some conceptual parallels. Though in quite different contexts.

Abstract In his own time, Lao Sze-Kwang formulated his own intra-cultural approach to the philosophy of culture that begins from the interdependence and organic nature of our cultural experience. In this article, I will address three questions: Why did Lao abandon his early reliance on the Hegelian model of philosophy of culture and formulate his own “two-structured” theory? Again, given Lao’s profound commitment and contribution to Chinese philosophy and its future directions, why is it not proper to describe him as a “Chinese philosopher”? And why is the much accomplished Lao Sze-Kwang not installed in the Chinese University of Hong Kong pantheon as yet one more of the great “New Confucian” philosophers that are associated with this institution?

Abstract In 1959, Lao Sze-Kwang (1927 – 2012), a well-known Chinese Kantian philosopher and author of the New Edition of the History of Chinese Philosophy, published On Existentialist Philosophy introducing existential philosophers to Chinese readers. This paper argues that Lao misinterpreted Kierkegaard’s ultimate philosophical quest of “how to become a Christian” as a question of ‘virtue completion,’ because he failed to recognize and acknowledge Kierkegaard’s distinction between aesthetic, moral and religious passion. By describing and clarifying Lao’s misinterpretation, the paper then argues that Lao’s trichotomy of the self fails to give due credit to the independence of religiousness from morality and aesthetics in Kierkegaard’s thought.

This article is dedicated to examination of the philosophical-aesthetic reflection in China in the XX century, and the impact of European aesthetics upon the development and transformation of the traditional Chinese aesthetics. The article employs the method of historical and cultural with elements of structural analysis of aesthetic text of the modern Chinese philosophers. In the XX century, a number of Chinese thinkers made attempts of reforming the traditional Chinese aesthetics, complementing it with the viewpoint of European philosophy. The article examines the paramount aesthetic thoughts of the modern Chinese philosophers Wang Guowei and Zong Baihua, and determines the impact of European philosophy upon them. The scientific novelty of this study lies in assessing the impact of the concepts of European aesthetics upon self-reflection and development of Chinese aesthetics in the context of cross-cultural problematic. It is demonstrated that Chinese modern aesthetics in many ways retains its connection with the tradition, which determines its specificity and imparts peculiar semantic symbolism. The conclusion is made that in the XX century, Chinese philosophers sought to complement the existing traditional Chinese reflection on art, which is based mostly on the ideas of Taoism and Buddhism, with what can be referred to as the Western viewpoint, associated with a scientific approach and scientific interpretation. Another vector in the area of humanistic understanding of the phenomenon of art was related to the attempts of interpretation of the European aesthetic thought from through the prism of Chinese traditional philosophy. The philosopher Wang Guowei tried to incorporate the European aesthetics into the scientific problematic of China. The philosopher Zong Baihua wanted to synthesize the Chinese and European aesthetic theories, and create what he believed is the modern Chinese aesthetics.

Abstract The article is devoted to the philosophy of the well-known ancient Chinese sage Confucius paying attention to the Western misunderstandings of it. The fundamental differences between Chinese and Western civilizations, the problem of transcendence, and different attitude towards history are discussed in the text. Being neither a religion nor a philosophy in the strict Western sense of the word, Confucian thinking still finds its parallels among Western philosophies. The article faces the phenomenological task to discover concrete modes of awareness, their active engagements, and their correlate contents that are sufficiently broad and founding to cut across diverse disciplinary and cultural phenomena. This brief essay is a step in that direction with explicit commitment to Confucian explication and continuity of Chinese civilization. Despite variations and different levels of interpretation, a common context between Confucius and Western philosophical trends may be found.

While there are numerous similarities between Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy, there are also significant differences that make them extremely distinct from each other. The views of Milesian philosopher Anaximenes and the Wuxing () in pre-Qin Chinese philosophy can be taken as examples, though they are rarely compared together. In actuality, their understandings of natural substances and how air (psyche) or Qi () changes between substances present a framework that is very comparable. But from these comparable frames, two different modes of functioning finally developed. As an illustration, this paper will contrast Wuxing in Hongfan () with arche in Anaximeness ideas. Starting with the natural materials that are present in both philosophies, this paper compares them through textual analysis. According to the definitions and orientations provided by the two philosophies, conclusions can be drawn that Wuxing emphasizes relevance and people, whereas Anaximenes concentrates on the search for the most fundamental principle and the supreme power in the universe.

I will argue for three points. The first is on the need to make Chinese philosophy a world philosophy. The second point is that, in order to promote Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy we should not historicize philosophy. Philosophy and history are two different disciplines. As important as historical context is, overemphasizing it or even taking philosophy merely as a matter of intellectual history makes it difficult for non-specialists to study Chinese philosophy, and is therefore counter-productive to advancing it as a world philosophy. A good balance is thus needed in order to develop Chinese philosophy in response to contemporary needs and not to exclude a large number of non-specialists from studying and drawing on it. My third point is that comparative philosophy is the most effective way to study, examine and develop Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy. Comparative philosophy provides a much needed bridge across different cultures for philosophy to connect on the world stage.

China is known as a cradle of human civilization. Since ancient times, this place has achieved many brilliant development achievements in all fields of social life, especially philosophy. During the process of formation and development, Chinese philosophy has taken people and human-related issues as the object of study. Theories on people are very rich and diverse in order to clarify the human issues in many different aspects. Chinese philosophic viewpoints on people are widespread, affecting and influencing many other countries in the region, including Vietnam. The article uses the methodology of the materialistic dialectics with principles of comprehensiveness, development, specific history and methods of comparison, analysis and synthesis to clarify the basic contents of the human issue in ancient Chinese philosophy, thereby, drawing its historical significance for the cause of current educational innovation in Vietnam through the development of policies on detecting, fostering, training and employing talents; focusing on moral education, considering moral education as the basic task of all educational processes; promoting the particularly important role of the teacher in the entire educational process; and building a rich and lively system of teaching methods to achieve the highest efficiency in the educational process.

The informed perspective presented here may rouse a sensitivity to the differences in reading Marxist philosophy from the perspective of the Inseparability of One and Many worldview and philosophy (a doctrine of internal, constitutive, relations––“intimacy”) on the part of Chinese intellectuals, particularly Mao Zedong, a great campaigner for philosophic and discursive Sinicization of Marxism. Marxism has provided an opportunity for a philosophical conversation with Chinese tradition, and this conversation was not launched by a government or official campaign, but instead by the efforts made on the part of countless grassroots intellectuals. It is argued that the reason for this was perhaps due to the fact that certain of Marx’s cosmological assumptions, in contrast to those of the main Western categories, are more capable of being understood and Sinicized in terms of particular philosophical currents in the Chinese tradition. This was particularly so for the two decades of the 1950s and 1960s, and until the end of the 1970s when Deng Xiaoping came to power and openly declared the start of his “Economic Reform” with the slogan “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.”

This study is an attempt to establish that 20th century’s canonized Taiwanese philosopher Mou Zongsan (1909–1995) has contributed significantly to the innovative burgeoning of modern Confucianism (or New Confucianism) with the revision of Western philosophy. This is based on the hypothesis that if ideas travel through the past to the present, and vice versa, and if intellectual thinking never knows any national, cultural and social boundaries, then there is an obvious intersection and communication of philosophical thoughts of East and West. This article also contemplates the fact that Western philosophies are widely known as they are widely published, read and circulated. Conversely, due to the language barriers philosophy and philosophers from the East are less widely known. Therefore, this research critically introduces and connects the early 20th century Confucian philosopher Shili Xiong (1885–1968), his disciple the contemporary Taiwanese Confucian intellectual Mou Zongsan, along with the Western philosophers Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), and Herman Bavinck (1854–1921), through ideas like moral autonomy, ethics, ontology, and imago Dei. In so doing, the article delineates the path to study 20th century Taiwanese philosophy, or broadly Chinese Confucian philosophy which makes a bridge between the East and the West through Modern Confucianism prevalently called New Confucianism.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the discussions around the theory of cultural interactions by Chinese philosopher Liang Shuming. The teaching was formed in the 1920s in the framework of New Culture Movement and resonated both with contemporaries and nowadays thinkers contemplating global changes. The relevance of the study of Liang Shuming’s ideas on culture is due to its popularity in the culture of modern China. The study aims to identify the starting points that made it possible to form the modern concept of culture with Chinese characteristics. In accordance with the set goal, it was necessary to solve the following tasks: 1) analyze the views of Liang Shuming on the relationship between Western and Chinese cultures; 2) clarify the specifics of Liang Shuming’s conceptual apparatus, considering the key ideas of his book Eastern and Western Cultures and Their Philosophies; 3) identify the features of the interpretation of Liang’s ideas about the role of Chinese culture in various philosophical traditions; 4) describe the key ideas of discussions about the role of Chinese culture in the 1920s; 5) trace the reception of Liang Shuming’s ideas in modern Chinese philosophy. The study is based on the original works of Liang Shuming and their critical reviews from both Europe and the Americas. The methods employed are those of comparative analysis and the hermeneutic approach. Turning to Liang's teachings allowed us to use this specific example to trace the features of the formation of the theory of interaction between Western and Chinese culture in the Chinese version of the philosophy of culture. As a result of the research, new sources on Chinese philosophy of culture are introduced into scientific circulation, allowing us to expand and deepen the interpretation of the problems of the relationship between Western and Chinese cultures and values in the context of the problems posed by Liang Shuming. Their analysis against the backdrop of discussions a century ago shows that the idea of a triune Chinese culture as the future of world civilization remains debatable today. At the same time, the philosophy of the special Chinese way actively absorbs the ideas of dialectical interaction between East and West, which lie in line with Liang’s reasoning about China as a world civilization.

The article provides a complex analysis of the problems of traditionalism in the teaching of Rene Guenon, a famous French philosopher author of works on metaphysics, symbolism and initiation. Attention is drawn to the fact that traditionalism sublimated and produced a theoretical formulation of ideals, systems, values aimed at the conscious cultivation of this worldview. The roots of the philosophical reflection of traditionalism, which originated in ancient times, starting with ancient Chinese and ancient Indian philosophy, through ancient Greek philosophy to its modern doctrines, are analyzed. The concept of Tradition, which Guenon defined as the so-called Primordial Tradition, is considered. A comparative analysis of the problem of intellectual intuition of Rene Guenon and Henri Bergson in the context of social philosophy is carried out. Particular attention is paid to the concept of Rene Guenon’s philosophy of history, in which the basic position is occupied by the theory of cosmic cycles based on the cosmology of Hinduism.

AbstractThis essay examines how Zhu Yuanzhang's legal philosophy was perceived and interpreted in the early Ming official history of the Ming founder, the Taizu shilu (Veritable records of Taizu), and in some relevant historical works of later times. By looking at the viewpoints expressed on Zhu's words and deeds, the essay demonstrates that his legal philosophy was carefully constructed in the official history, and that this work of historical construction represented an official effort to redefine Chinese cultural identity.

Zhongdaology is the core of Chinese traditional Confucian philosophy. The zhongdaological way of thinking represents the Chinese philosophical thinking mode, with Confucianism as the main body, and has deeply influenced many aspects of Chinese culture. It is different from the traditional ontological thinking in the West. However, for a long time, due to the influence of the dominant position of Western ontological thinking in the field of philosophical research, the characteristics of zhongdaological thinking have not been fully elaborated and promoted. This essay briefly exposes the historical origin of the doctrine of zhongdaology and its significance in Confucianism. Like the situation of traditional Chinese philosophy, African philosophy also has long been overshadowed and ignored by western philosophy to some extent. To this end, it can be safely stated that the dominance of western tradition is why the interaction between Chinese philosophy and African philosophy and other underrepresented philosophical traditions in the south have not taken firm roots. This essay makes some preliminary comparisons between Chinese Confucian zhongdaology with some African philosophical ideas such as Ezumezu and Ubuntu, to show, first, the significance of broader dialogue and exchange among different philosophical traditions in the south, second how zhongdaology itself could serve as a veritable framework for doing philosophy across borders.

In Chinese philosophy, modern processes of searching for the fundamental values of the renewed strategies of education are based upon traditional Confucian approaches as well as upon recent borrowings from Western philosophy. The concept of philosophical dialogue is one example of these borrowings, adopted and radically changed following traditional Chinese logic. Such transformation means adapting the theoretical model of Socrates’ dialogue into Confucian dialogue, the term coined by Chinese authors. This paper considers Chinese developments in the philosophy of culture and aims to specify the ways of such adaptation as applicable to the philosophy of education. The goals of the study are 1) to identify and describe relevant Chinese literature on the subject; 2) to compare its interpretations by Chinese and Russian philosophers; 3) to specify key differences in interpretations of dialogue as educational method. Investigating the issue through philosophical and cultural lens, incorporating the standpoint of modern comparative studies, as well as the critical analysis of the logic of those theories in their historical and cultural context by means of the hermeneutic approach makes it possible for Chinese authors to focus on the cultural peculiarities of the Chinese way of thinking and to identify the correlation between the Western concept way of thinking and the concept of Chinese logic. This study analyzes the works of modern Chinese philosophers specializing in the specific cultural character of China through the prism of the philosophy of education. The paper concludes that in Chinese logic technical (in the Western understanding regarded as cognitive and formal logical) methods are inferior to ethical and social value orientations. Another finding is that Chinese authors tend to consider Confucian logic as part of dialogue, and dialogue is viewed as a means of moral education. Methodologically this finding leads the author to suggest that the Chinese-specific way of thinking, its philosophical culture, cannot be fully perceived by utilizing comparison with analogous concepts of Western philosophical thought. It would be equally beneficial to compare the conceptual framework of the Chinese philosophy of education with the concepts borrowed from Western philosophy.

Pre-Han philosophical tradition did not address issues for which the concept of truth was central. Classical Chinese philosophy had virtually no metaphysical theory. The theory of language was mainly pragmatic. The semantic doctrines that were developed focused on terms rather than sentences or sententials. The Chinese theory of knowledge was primarily a theory of know-how and was not based on contrast between knowledge and belief. Chinese philosophy of mind treated heart-mind as a cluster of dispositional attitudes to make distinctions and to act upon, not as a repository of cognitive content about the world. Discussions of inference and semantic paradoxes used explicitly pragmatic terms rather than semantic ones. These differences can be partially explained by features of classical Chinese language in which compositional sentencehood is not important or syntactically obvious, and in which the counterparts of propositional attitudes take terms rather than sentences as objects.

The sinicization of Marxism is the historical process of combining the basic theory of Marxism with the concrete practice of the Chinese revolution to form a sinicization of Marxism with national characteristics, national form and national content. Since the sinicization of Marxism was first proposed by Mao Zedong, in the great practice of leading China's revolution, construction and reform for a long time, the Communist Party of China has formed Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thought of "Three Represents" and the Scientific Outlook on Development. These four theoretical systems reflect the distinct practicality. Since the mid-20th century, Western scholars have expressed two kinds of fallacies about Chinese Marxist philosophy: one is the "heretic" theory, that is, that Chinese Marxist philosophy is a "heresy" of Marxist philosophy; the other is the "replication" theory, that is, that Chinese Marxist philosophy is only a "replica" of "orthodox" Marxist philosophy. Both negate the fact that Chinese Marxist philosophy legitimacy of national identity. The legitimacy of the Chinese characteristics of Chinese Marxist philosophy is determined by the fundamental nature of Marxist philosophy, the proper attitude towards Marxist philosophy, and the theoretical goal of sinicizing Marxist philosophy. The most fundamental reason why Chinese Marxist philosophy has Chinese characteristics is that it is the philosophical expression of the Chinese way.

Chinese science fiction has been attaining global visibility since Liu Cixin’s trilogy entitled Remembrance of Earth’s Past. The trilogy’s English translator Liu Yukun has edited and rendered a science-fiction anthology that comprises sixteen novellas composed by fourteen Chinese novelists. Apart from a fecundity of imagination and richness of imagery-evoking depictions, narratives compiled in the anthology also epitomise Taoist philosophy conveyed in Zhuangzi, a Warring States (475-221 BC) treatise ascribed to an illustrious philosopher Zhuangzi. Philosophical constructs in the anthology can be exemplified by quintessential construals such as ‘non-action’, ‘resting in destiny’ and ‘self-so’, as well as mindset appertaining to temporal and aesthetic issues.

The philosophical foundations of modern art are inextricably linked to the development of culture and the pecu-liarities of a particular artist's creative process. Chinese neorealist painting is a representative reflection of the philosophy of the “new period” epoch in the national culture, which focused the society's attention on the signif-icant changes in the fine arts of the Celestial Empire in the post-reform period. It is proved that the philosophi-cal and cultural preconditions of the artistic concept of neo-realist art were the theories of neo-Kantianism. Phil-osophical ideas of a new reality of human existence, a different quality of social relations actualized the ideas of humanistic ideals of professional activity of the modern artist, the value of national identity. The concept of neorealist painting in China is an expression of world and traditional national philosophy in art, due to which it acquires a number of specific features, one of the most important among which is the assumption of subjectiv-ism in the interpretation of reality.

This work provides a Russian translation of Albert Schweitzer’s “Philosophy and Animal Welfare Movement” (Philosophie und Tierschutzbewegung, c. 1950, possibly 1936). There, Schweitzer considers the issue of the man’s proper attitude to the living beings around. At the same time, he analyzes the history of the formation of different approaches to the issue in the course of the development of western and eastern ethical thought. In particular, he examines briefly the attitude towards living beings in Chinese and Indian ethics, the ethics of early and modern Christianity, and European philosophy. Finally, Schweitzer highlights the inevitability of the convergence between universal human ethics and the principles of reverence for life and love for all life. In this convergence, he sees a complex task facing contemporary society.

“Doing Chinese philosophy” as a method proposed by Chen Shaoming offers a perspective that shifts from the study of the history of Chinese philosophy to the innovation or creation of the significance of Chinese philosophy. Chen defines the “Chinese philosophy” as a philosophy that embodies the cultural spirit or experiences of China. This approach calls for an expansion of resource beyond the traditional study of the history of Chinese philosophy and seeks to bridge classical thoughts with modern life experiences. It does not advocate a metaphysical presupposition for research but accepts methodological diversity while promoting the cultivation and use of imagination. This approach also aims at envisioning a philosophy field that is rich in thought and broad in scope.

The purpose of this article is to explore the thoughts of the philosopher Tung Chung Shu who is a figure in Chinese philosophy. Tung Chung Shu managed to compile several aspects of philosophy and culture that developed in China during the Han dynasty. Tung Chung Shu's thought has relevance to the development of multiculturalism, especially in Indonesia amid globalization today. The condition of the Chinese nation has a different cultural background and has succeeded in reformulating the unifying ideology of the country so that it can improve the condition of a society that is experiencing chaos. The philosophy and culture of the Chinese nation that developed when in this condition was the Han Dynasty which was dominated by Taoism, Legalism, and Confucianism. A Chinese philosopher, Tung Chung Shu, combined the three schools with the core teachings of jen, yi, l, chi, and hsin with the main goal of realizing a happy, prosperous, and safe society. The situation of differences that exist in people's lives gave birth to multiculturalism which offers a cultural paradigm to understand and interpret the differences that develop in people's lives. This research uses the abstraction analysis method and then analyzes it through a comparative interpretative approach that begins with description and historical continuity. The results showed that (1) the condition of differences in society can be avoided from conflict if the government can implement multiculturalism policies in regulating the order of government as in Tung Chung Shu's thinking about good governance (2) the condition of a country depends on the attitude of the country's leaders so that the condition of multicultural society can be safe, harmonious, peaceful, prosperous cannot be separated from the role of state leaders (3) in addressing differences need the attitude of wisdom, humanity, courage, wisdom and virtue as the philosophical thought of Tung Chung Shu. In line with the conditions of the multicultural Indonesian nation, Tung Chung Shu's thoughts can be a reference in efforts to develop multiculturalism in Indonesia. This argument is supported by the situation and conditions of the Indonesian nation which has a diversity of ethnicities, cultures, religions, regions, and different cultural traditions.

Abstract The fifteenth-century Italian humanist Lorenzo Valla (1407–1457) and the Chinese philosopher of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) Li Zhi 李贄 (1527–1602) are both famous for their rebellion against the mainstream culture of their respective nations and times. A parallel study of the writers allows us to consider fifteenth-century Italy alongside sixteenth-century China, and vice versa. The similarities and differences provide perspective on both cultures, and on the reciprocal influence between philosophy and social development.
