This paper presents a novel approach for the reduced-complexity Min-Sum (MS) decoding of low density parity check (LDPC) codes in the partially parallel layered decoder architecture, which contains a large number of serial check node processors. Reduced complexity is obtained by using the variant of the single-minimum Offset Min-Sum (smOMS) algorithm that approximates a second minimum with the addition of the variable weight parameter to the minimum value. Although the reduced-complexity MS algorithms primarily reduce hardware resources in fully parallel implementations, the results showed that a considerable reduction can be obtained if serial check node processors are used. The paper also proposes a better subminimum estimation for irregular codes from 5G new radio (5G NR). The method uses smaller subminimum estimation weights in check nodes with a higher degree and higher weights in check nodes with a smaller degree, which leads to the significant improvement in the SNR performance. Additionally, it is shown that SNR performance can be further improved by applying offset before minimum calculation, which differs from conventional Min-Sum approaches.

In this paper, we have established a composite queuing network model on the basis of the queuing theory and combining with the current security system of the airport. We have made division of the whole security system into different processes which include ID check process, x-ray scanning process, and millimeter scanning process, and find out the unit of security system according to the proportion of different security lanes, what’s more, these processes were distinguished into different kinds of queuing system, and then, we established the queuing network using these different queuing model into the unit. We applied the method of computer simulation to analyze the bottleneck, and we find that ID check process in pre-check system is unstable based on the current proportion of pre-check lane. Meanwhile, we optimized the number of each unit using the system design model and prove the effectiveness by computer simulation, then, we optimized the service rate of the baggage and body screening in pre-check lane follow the above process. Finally, we further discussed development direction of this model.

In this paper, an electronically reconfigurable polarization converter unit cell operating at X-band is proposed. The polarization converter unit cell consists of a passive patch, a phase shifter, and an active patch. There are two PIN diodes on the active patch. By switching the bias conditions of those PIN diodes, an electronically reconfigurable polarization converter is conceived. Both the passive and active patches are circular, and there are circular types of slots on both patches to enhance the operating bandwidth. To compensate for the capacitance introduced by PIN diodes, an equivalent capacitance structure is introduced on the active patch. 2 × 2 unit cells are designed to check the performance of the unit cell for polarization conversion applications. In addition, a novel type of experimental characterization technique is proposed to check the performance of polarization conversion using 2 × 2 unit cells. Two WR-90 waveguide sections, two rectangular to square sections, and a power supply are taken for the measurements. The rectangular to square waveguide transition section is designed in such a way so that 2 × 2 unit cells can be perfectly adjusted on the transition section and the performance of the 2 × 2 unit cells can be measured. The simulation results of the 8 × 8 array are also added to a miniaturized X-band horn antenna to check the performance of the overall array.

In this paper we study quasi quantum quadratic operators (QQO) acting on the algebra of [Formula: see text] matrices [Formula: see text]. We consider two kinds of quasi QQO the corresponding quadratic operator maps from the unit circle into the sphere and from the sphere into the unit circle, respectively. In our early paper we have defined a q-purity of quasi QQO. This notion is equivalent to the invariance of the unit sphere in [Formula: see text]. But to check this condition, in general, is tricky. Therefore, it would be better to find weaker conditions to check the q-purity. One of the main results of this paper is to provide a criterion of q-purity of quasi QQO in terms of the unit circles. Moreover, we are able to classify all possible kinds of quadratic operators which can produce q-pure quasi QQO. We think that such result will allow one to check whether a given mapping is a pure channel or not. This finding suggests us to study such a class of nonpositive mappings. Correspondingly, the complement of this class will be of potential interest for physicist since this set contains all completely positive mappings.

It is provided results of works on creation and operational development (improvement) of the unit on the incision, for check of various systems of coverings (wearproof, abradable, etc.), compressor or turbine. It is stated the problems concerning the creation of unit and criteria which must be considered in improvement and unit modernization. Some calculations were made for definition the unit’s operating modes, which should provide the possibility to model to (simulate) the operation of turbine and compressor covering, on various types of engines both modern and future. The unit should provide a wide temperature span and speeds of incision etc., the design of unit details should be technological and provide the possibility to put on the shovel and prorate simulator various systems of coverings. The offered coverings test method will allow to reduce expenses on the check of again developed coverings, and also to reduce terms on the check of again developed coverings. The technical project demands have not been provided during the initial tests of the unit (after designing and manufacturing). For the purpose of maintenance of the technical project, demands took on the tasks of the unit’s modernization. In our opinion, it was necessary to reduce weight and resistance to air medium of the blade to satisfy the requirements. It was able to reduce weight by means of «dovetail», instead of a bolt joint, and also application of turbine airfoil similar in shape to a real blade. According to the results of the spent analysis was accepted the solution to apply the blades of the compressor of real engines, made of various materials EP 718 ID and VT 8 as simulators of blades, for check of turbine coverings, the simulator heat sink nickel alloys will be designed. The improvement works of the available disk simulator were carried out for applying the new simulators of blades. For this purpose, the technology for producing dovetail-type locks was completed by milling. It was completed the improvement of the disk simulator by milling of dovetail-type grooves.

The universal cable tester that allow you to quickly change the test units connected to the control unit and ensure operation with connected to a computer and standalone modes is developed. Introdução: pneumonia associada à ventilação mecânica (PAV ) é uma infecção relacionada com os cuidados de saúde e a segunda principal causa de infecções hospitalares ligadas a taxas de morbidade e mortalidade. Portanto, a implementação de protocolos de diretrizes de cuidados tornou-se necessária para pacientes criticamente doentes em UTI, a fim de proporcionar um tratamento adequado.Objetivo: avaliar o impacto de um pacote chamado FAST HUG em PAV; analisar os fatores de risco para ocorrencia de PAV em pacientes adultos de uma UTI de um hospital privado; analisar as caracteristicas clinicas dos pacientes que foram ou não submetidos ao FAST HUG; analisar a etiologia dos microrganismos relacionados a PAV; determinar os custos decorrentes da internação em pacientes com a pneumonia e em paciente que receberam o FAST HUG.Métodos: O estudo foi realizado em uma UTI de 8 leitos, de um hospital privado . Foi dividido em duas fases: antes de implementar FAST HUG , de agosto de 2011 a agosto de 2012 e após a implementação do ABRAÇO RÁPIDO, de setembro de 2012 a dezembro de 2013. Uma ficha individual para cada paciente, no estudo, foi preenchida, usando informações tomadas por via eletrônica dos prontuários hospitalares. Os seguintes dados, para cada paciente, foram obtidos : idade, sexo, motivo da internação, o uso de três ou mais tipos de antibióticos, duração da estadia, tempo de intubação e progresso. Resultados: Após a aplicação de FAST HUG , houve uma redução observável na ocorrência de PAV ( p < 0,01 ) , bem como uma redução nas taxas de mortalidade ( p < 0,01 ) . Ela também mostra que a intervenção realizada no estudo resultou numa redução significativa dos custos hospitalares de UTI ( p < 0,05 ). Conclusão: A implementação do FAST HUG reduziu os casos de PAV . Assim, a redução de custos , taxas de mortalidade e tempo de permanência no hospital,apontam a excelência das medidas aqui descritas e resultam em melhoria para a qualidade geral do atendimento.
Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a health care related infection and the second leading cause of nosocomial infections linked to morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, the implementation of care guideline protocols has become necessary for critically ill patients in ICUs in order to provide adequate treatment. Objective: To assess the impact of a package called FAST HUG in PAV ; analyze the risk factors for occurrence of VAP in adult patients at an ICU of a private hospital ; analyze the clinical characteristics of patients who were or were not submitted to the FAST HUG ; analyze the etiology of microorganisms related to EPI ; determine the cost of hospitalization in patients with pneumonia and in patients who received the FAST HUG.Methods: The study was performed in a private hospital that has an 8-bed ICU. It was divided into two phases: before implementing FAST HUG, from August 2011 to August 2012 and after the implementation of FAST HUG, from September 2012 to December 2013. An individual form for each patient in the study was filled out by using information taken electronically from the hospital medical records. The following data for each patient was obtained: age, gender, reason for hospitalization, the use of three or more types of antibiotics, length of stay, intubation time and progress. Findings: After the implementation of FAST HUG, there was an observable decrease in the occurrence of VAP (p <0.01), as well as a reduction in mortality rates (p <0.01). It also shows that the intervention performed in the study resulted in a significant reduction in ICU hospital costs (p <0.05).Conclusion: The implementation of FAST HUG reduced the cases of VAP. Thus, decreasing costs, reducing mortality rates and length of stay, which therefore resulted in an improvement to the overall quality of care.

Today’s intensive care units monitor patients through the use of various medical devices, which generate a high ratio of false positive alarms due to a low alarm specificity. The false alarms have resulted in a stressful working environment for healthcare professionals that are getting more desensitized to triggered alarms and causing alarm fatigue. The patient safety is also compromised by having high noise levels in the patient room, which disturbs their sleep. This thesis has developed an intelligent alarm system with an improved alarm management and the use of 23 intelligent algorithms to minimize the number of false positive alarms. The suggested system is capable of improving the alarm situation and increasing the patient safety in critical care. The algorithms were modeled with fuzzy logics consisting of delays and multi parameter validation. The results were iteratively developed by having focus groups with various experts.

CubeSat missions needs components that are tolerant against the radiation in space. The hardware components must be reliable, and it must not compromise the functionality on-board during the mission. At the same time, the cost of hardware and its development should not be high. Hence, this thesis discusses the design and development of a CubeSat architecture using a Commercial Off-The- Shelf (COTS) Multi-Processor System on Chip (MPSoC). The architecture employs an affordable Rad-Hard Micro-Controller Unit as a Supervisor for the MPSoC. Also, it uses several radiation mitigation techniques such as the Latch-up protection circuit to protect it against Single-Event Latch-ups (SELs), Readback scrubbing for Non- Volatile Memories (NVMs) such as NOR Flash and Configuration scrubbing for the FPGA present in the MPSoC to protect it against Single-Event Upset (SEU)s, reliable communication using Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and Space packet protocol. Apart from such functionalities, the Supervisor executes tasks such as Watchdog that monitors the liveliness of the applications running in the MPSoC, data logging, performing Over-The-Air Software/Firmware update. The thesis work implements functionalities such as Communication, Readback memory scrubbing, Configuration scrubbing using SEM-IP, Watchdog, and Software/Firmware update. The execution times of the functionalities are presented for the application done in the Supervisor. As for the Configuration scrubbing that was implemented in Programmable Logic (PL)/FPGA, results of area and latency are reported.

Single Event Latch-Ups (SELs), återläsningsskrubbning för icke-volatila minnen (eng. Non-Volatile Memories) NVMs som NOR Flash och skrubbning av konfigurationsminnet skrubbning för FPGA:er i MPSoC:en för att skydda dem mot Single-Event Upsets (SEUs), och tillhandahålla pålitlig kommunikation mha CRC och Space Packet Protocol. Bortsett från sådana funktioner utför Övervakaren uppgifter som Watchdog för att övervaka att applikationerna som körs i MPSoC:en fortfarande är vid liv, dataloggning, och Over- the-Air-uppdateringar av programvaran/Firmware. Examensarbetet implementerar funktioner såsom kommunikation, återläsningsskrubbning av minnet, konfigurationsminnesskrubbning mha SEM- IP, Watchdog och uppdatering av programvara/firmware. Exekveringstiderna för utförandet av funktionerna presenteras för den applikationen som körs i Övervakaren. När det gäller konfigurationsminnesskrubbningen som implementerats i den programmerbara logiken i FPGA:n, rapporteras area och latens.

Context: The facial subunit principle organizes the facial skin into subunits. Facial reconstruction for skin cancer based on aesthetic units consists of replacing the entire subunit when a large part of a subunit has been removed. Aims: To determine the prevalence of facial skin cancer, their location by facial aesthetic units, and the type of facial reconstruction used in each of them. Settings and Design: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Head and Neck Surgery Service of a general hospital between 2017 and 2018. Materials and Methods: A population census was conducted during this period. Statistical Analysis Used: The categorical variables were expressed as frequencies (percentages). Continuous variables were described as the means and standard deviations or medians and interquartile ranges. Results: The most common skin cancer was basal cell skin cancer, followed by epithelial skin cancer and, at last, melanoma. In general, the most frequent localization of these cancers was the nose. Conclusions: In spite of primary closure being the most common form of reconstruction, a considerable number of patients required facial reconstruction based on aesthetic facial units, with satisfying results.

Notre étude portera également sur l'utilisation de la photographie et sur ses traits distinctifs à travers les portraits de Chuck Close, Duane Hanson, John de Andrea et particulièrement les portraits de Jean Olivier Hucleux. L'étude du portrait que nous avons menée chez les hyperréalistes représente la réalité précise qui peut désigner la mythologie de leur vie moderne et de leur environnement contemporain.

In questa Tesi di Laurea si è voluto analizzare il percorso normativo che ha condotto negli anni alla creazione dei Sistemi di Gestione per la Sicurezza sui luoghi di Lavoro (SGSL), con particolare attenzione alle lavorazioni inerenti l’edilizia. Con l’analisi di alcuni di questi Sistemi, si è potuta osservare un’attenzione, nello sviluppo delle normative, alle pratiche Lean derivanti dal Toyotismo. Per questi motivi, si è analizzata la nascita del modello Toyota, i principi cardine che hanno portato in seguito allo sviluppo della “Lean Construction” e di strumenti come il Last Planner System al fine di capirne il linguaggio e lo scopo. Di seguito ci si è addentrati nei quadri normativi, dalla fondazione dell’ILO, Organizzazione Internazionale del Lavoro, fino alla redazione dell’attuale BS Ohsas 18001 e della Uni Iso 45001:2018, sua ereditiera. Su queste due si è soffermata la mia attenzione in quanto per la prima volta si è introdotto, in ambito normativo, il rischio trasversale, ovvero il rischio legato all’organizzazione aziendale ed all’ergonomia del posto di lavoro o della lavorazione stessa, per mezzo dei Sistemi di Gestione. Grazie all’Ing. Ugo Di Camillo e ad un’esperienza di Tirocinio per tesi presso la società di Ingegneria T.H.E.M.A. S.r.l. è stato possibile rendere più fruibile la lettura di queste tematiche per mezzo della creazione di un’applicazione per smartphone che ho ideato per un utilizzo in cantiere al fine di attuare e sostenere un Sistema di Gestione innovativo.

Examines the situation in Serbia in 1942-1944. After the defeat in the fall-winter 1941, the depleted Partisan forces in Serbia confined their actions to small-scale attacks and sabotage acts, while the Chetniks remained largely passive. It appeared, therefore, that small German contingents assisted by the Bulgarian and collaborationist forces would be able to keep the country in check. However, the Partisans gradually re-organized their depleted units into a large and effective force and ultimately emerged victorious. At the same time, the efforts to maintain a precarious balance between collaboration and resistance weakened the Chetniks and led to their ultimate defeat.

This chapter recounts how Helmut Kohl became German chancellor on October 1, 1982. Three days after he became Germany's chancellor, Kohl travelled to Paris to meet French President François Mitterand. In concluding his conversation with Mitterand, Kohl recognized that Germany would remain a colossus in the center of the continent and thus a potential menace. Kohl made clear his intention to keep nationalistic tendencies in check and work towards a pro-European future, but what that meant in practical terms was unclear. Four years after Kohl became chancellor, the only “pro-European” advance was the 1986 Single European Act (SEA). However, despite his “pro-Europeanism,” Kohl supported the SEA only passively. Through the years since Kohl had become chancellor, prospects of monetary unity had receded further.

Emotion researchers generally concur that most emotions in humans and animals are elicited by the appraisals of events that are highly relevant for the organism, generating action tendencies that are often accompanied by changes in expression, autonomic physiology, and feeling. Scherer’s component process model of emotion (CPM) postulates that individual appraisal checks drive the dynamics and configuration of the facial expression of emotion and that emotion recognition is based on appraisal inference with consequent emotion attribution. This chapter outlines the model and reviews the accrued empirical evidence that supports these claims, covering studies that experimentally induced specific appraisals or that used induction of emotions with typical appraisal configurations (measuring facial expression via electromyographic recording) or behavioral coding of facial action units. In addition, recent studies analyzing the mechanisms of emotion recognition are shown to support the theoretical assumptions.

AbstractArguably the greatest challenge within Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is reconstruction following major trauma or oncologic ablative surgery that restores the patient’s pre-morbid quality of life. Satisfactory reconstruction of the maxillofacial region needs to address both cosmetic and often functional concerns beyond those encountered at other sites in the body. Even small facial defects can lead to cosmetic deformity that impacts significantly on a patient’s psychosocial well-being if not reconstructed appropriately. There have been many technological advances over the last few decades, particularly with respect to free tissue transfer and transplantation. In contrast, a number of techniques have ancient origins that have been refined over the years. Many defects will have multiple reconstructive options and a number of factors require consideration to decide which are appropriate for an individual patient. In this chapter anatomical units of the oral cavity (lip, cheek, tongue, floor of mouth and palate), and face (forehead, orbit, nose, cheek and ear) are considered in turn, with reconstructive options presented from simple to complex.

Unit cost is undoubtedly the most critical factor for the competitiveness of a product. Therefore, evaluating the competitiveness of a product according to its unit cost is a reasonable idea. The current practice assesses the competitiveness at a number of check points in the product life cycle, and then averages the results. This approach is computationally simple but theoretically doubtful. This study evaluates the long-term cost competitiveness of a semiconductor product based on its cost learning model from a new viewpoint – the trend in the mid-term competitiveness. Using a fuzzy value to express the long-term cost competitiveness, the flexibility in the interpretation and implementation of the evaluation result is increased. A practical example is used to illustrate the proposed methodology.

The European Court of Human Rights tends to allow a wide margin of appreciation in respect of issues over which a clear European consensus has yet to emerge. Are you good at drug calculations? This is a question you must ask yourself and be honest about the answer. There is no room for inaccuracies when calculating medicine dosages and if you are not happy working with numbers then you need to practise. Drug calculation is a critical area when managing medicines and is open to error. All health professionals who are dispensing, supplying, or administering drugs will need to perform drug calculations to a greater or lesser extent. Registered professionals are accountable and responsible for their decisions and actions and cannot rely on others to check the accuracy of their calculations. The NMC’s medicines management skills cluster for pre-registration nursing programmes (2010) states that patients can trust registered nurses to undertake medicines calculations correctly and safely. Numeracy skills are required to ensure this and to enable registered nurses to perform the drug calculations required to administer medicines safely via appropriate routes. All branches of nursing must also recognize the specific requirements for children and other groups with regard to medicines’ calculations. Within this chapter we offer some explanations and the chance to practise some calculations. There is an expectation that all pre-registration health care professionals will have at least GCSE mathematics or equivalent, such as the Scottish Certificate of Education, therefore explanations will assume you have this level of knowledge. Universities recognize that some students have real difficulty with numeracy and they make additional support available from local study skill centres. Your personal tutor will have details. One area of frequent confusion is the use of SI units (International System of Units). SI units are units of measurement for example grams, milligrams, or micrograms, which measure weight; and millilitres or litres, which measure volume. When calculating drug doses, make sure that you are aware of the SI unit that is being used, for example, grams or milligrams, litres or millilitres; see Table 8.1 for equivalences of weight and volume.

The stages in a crystal structure analysis by diffraction methods are summarized in Figure 14.1 for a substance with fewer than about 1000 atoms. The principal steps are: (1) First it is necessary to obtain or grow suitable single crystals; this is sometimes a tedious and difficult process. The ideal crystal for X-ray diffraction studies is 0.2–0.3mm in diameter. Somewhat larger specimens are generally needed for neutron diffraction work. Various solvents, and perhaps several different derivatives of the compound under study, may have to be tried before suitable specimens are obtained. (2) Next it is necessary to check the crystal quality. This is usually done by finding out if the crystal diffracts X rays (or neutrons) and how well it does this. (3) If the crystal is considered suitable for investigation, its unitcell dimensions are determined. This can usually be done in 20 minutes, barring complications. The unit-cell dimensions are obtained by measurements of the locations of the diffracted beams (the reciprocal lattice) on the detecting device, these spacings being reciprocally related to the dimensions of the crystal lattice. The space group is deduced from the symmetry of, and the systematic absences in, the diffraction pattern. (4) The density of the crystal may be measured if the crystals are not sensitive to air, moisture, or temperature and can survive the process. Otherwise an estimated value (about 1.3g cm−3 if no heavy atoms are present) can be used. This will give the formula weight of the contents of the unit cell. From this it can be determined if the crystal contains the compound chosen for study, and how much solvent of crystallization is present. (5) At this point it is necessary to decide whether or not to proceed with a complete structure determination. The main question is, of course, whether the unit-cell contents are those expected. One must try to weigh properly the relevant factors, among which are: (i) Quite obviously, the intrinsic interest of the structure. (ii) Whether the diffraction pattern gives evidence of twinning, disorder, or other difficulties that will make the analysis, even if possible, at best of limited value.

This research work deals with the development of safety reconfigurable embedded control systems following the international industrial component-based standard IEC61499. According to this standard, a function block (FB) is a functional unit of software and a control application a FB network that has to meet functional and temporal properties described in user requirements. We define in the book chapter a new semantic of the reconfiguration where a crucial criterion to consider is the automatic improvement of the system performance at run-time. If a reconfiguration scenario is applied at run-time, then the FB network implementing the system is totally changed or modified. To handle all possible reconfiguration forms, we propose thereafter an agent-based architecture that applies automatic reconfigurations to adapt the system according to well defined conditions and we model this agent with nested state machines according to the formalism of net condition/event systems which is an extension of the Petri net formalism. In order to satisfy user requirements, we specify the functional and temporal properties with the temporal logic CTL (as well as its extensions ECTL and TCTL) and we apply the model checker SESA to check the whole system behavior. To assign this reconfigurable system into the execution environment, we define thereafter an approach based on the exploration of reachability graphs to construct feasible OS tasks that encode the FB network corresponding to each reconfiguration scenario. Therefore, the system is implemented with sets of OS tasks where each set is to load in memory when the corresponding scenario is applied by the Agent. We developed the tool X-Reconfig to support these contributions that we apply on the FESTO and EnAS benchmark production systems available in our research laboratory.

The results of an X-ray structure analysis are coordinates of the individual, chemically identified atoms in each unit cell, the space group (which gives equivalent positions), and displacement parameters that may be interpreted as indicative of molecular motion and/or disorder. Such data obtained from crystal structure analyses may be incorporated into a CIF or mmCIF (Crystallographic Information File or Macromolecular Crystallographic Information File). These ensure that the results of crystal structure analyses are usefully archived. There are many checks that the crystallographer can make to ensure that the CIF or mmCIF file is correctly informative. For example, the automated validation program PLATON (Spek, 2003) checks that all data reported are up to the standards required for publication by the International Union of Crystallography. It does geometrical calculations on the structure, illustrates the results, finds if any symmetry has been missed, investigates any twinning, and checks if the structure has already been reported. We now review the ways in which these atomic parameters can be used to obtain a three-dimensional vision of the entire crystal structure. When molecules crystallize in an orthorhombic, tetragonal, or cubic unit cell it is reasonably easy to build a model using the unit-cell dimensions and fractional coordinates, because all the interaxial angles are 90◦. However, the situation is more complicated if the unit cell contains oblique axes and it is often simpler to convert the fractional crystal coordinates to orthogonal coordinates before calculating molecular geometry. The equations for doing this for bond lengths, interbond angles, and torsion angles are presented in Appendix 12. If the reader wishes to compute interatomic distances directly, this is also possible if one knows the cell dimensions (a, b, c, ∝ , β , γ ,), the fractional atomic coordinates (x, y, z for each atom), and the space group.

Nozzle type check valves are often employed in compressor stations in three locations: compressor outlet, station discharge and station by-pass. The fundamental design concept of these valves is based on creating a converging diverging flow through the valve internal geometry such that a minimum area is achieved at a location corresponding to the back of the check valve disc at fully open position. This will ensure maximum hydrodynamic force coefficient which allows the valve to be fully open with minimum flow. Spring forces and stiffness determine the performance of this type of check valves and impact the overall operation and integrity of compressor station. This paper examines the effects of various spring characteristics and stiffness in relation to the compressor and station flow characteristics. The results show that when the spring forces are higher than the maximum hydrodynamic force at minimum flow, the disc will not be at fully open position, which will give rise to disc fluttering and potential for cyclic high velocity impact between components of the internal valve assembly. This could lead to self destruction of the check valve and subsequent risk of damage to the compressor unit itself. The paper also points to the fact that the spring selection criteria for a unit check valve are different than that for station and bypass check valves. An example of a case study with actual field data from a high pressure ratio compressor station employing this type of check valves is presented to illustrate the associated dynamic phenomena and fluid-structure interaction within the internal assembly of the check valve.

The Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) in Hong Kong has developed a measurement system for the testing of electrosurgical unit (ESU) analyzers. ESUs are medical device widely used by surgeons and medical practitioners in surgical operations and in outpatient procedures. ESUs generate high frequency signals usually in the range of 200 kHz to 500 kHz with power up to 300 W to heat up tissues by induced intracellular oscillation of ionized molecules. By precisely controlling the power and duty cycle of the output waveform, various electrosurgical procedures including cut, coagulate, desiccate, fulgurate or spray of tissues can be performed. Routine performance check of ESUs is commonly conducted by ESU analyzers, which is a high frequency electronic load designed to measure the output parameters of various ESU modes. In this paper a method developed for the testing of ESU analyzers at the SCL is presented. By utilizing high speed digital sampling system, high frequency arbitrary power waveforms measurement function of ESU analyzers can be tested by simultaneous measurement of voltage and current components.

Recent hurricanes in Gulf of Mexico, most notably Ivan (2004), Katrina & Rita (2005), Ike (2008), were more severe than the local 100 year extremes in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). As a result API has issued an interim metocean bulletin, API Bulletin 2INT-MET [1]. Concurrently, API also issued API Bulletin 2INT-EX [2] for assessment of existing offshore structures for hurricane conditions. API Bulletin 2INT-EX recommends a robustness check to evaluate floating structure critical components including production and export risers. The robustness check for risers as a minimum should consider the capacity and ductility of the key riser components. This paper investigates the robustness of a steel catenary riser (SCR) suspended from a deepwater tension leg platform (TLP) unit in Central GoM. The robustness assessment is performed for the 1000 year Central GoM hurricane conditions provided in API 2INT-MET. Time domain coupled analysis using the program DeepC is performed to determine the TLP motions and the associated loading on the SCR. SCR strength capacity checks are performed as per the methods outlined in new ISO 13628-12 [3].

Marine and offshore structures are subjected to dynamic loads during the lifetime. The values or directions of dynamic loads rapidly change in time, causing a significant rise of inertial forces in structural elements. Dynamic loads appear as result of ship’s movement at sea, wind and wave acting, machinery operation, hull vibration and sometimes even as result of collision or explosion. The corresponding dynamic forces and moments act on the ship hull provoking the appearance of stresses, often leading to buckling, plastic deformations or fatigue cracks of the structural members. To ensure the safety and reliability of structures under dynamic loading it is necessary to estimate the transient effects on the collapse behavior of plate panels. According to the Common Structural Rules (CSR) the safety of marine structures must be proved performing the hull girder ultimate strength check. As a possible tool for the ultimate strength analysis, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is widely spread among engineers. In spite of the great effectiveness, the transient Finite Element Analysis (FEA) remains very time consuming and sometimes difficult to accomplish well. Therefore, the formulation of the Idealized Structural Unit Method (ISUM) is extended for the dynamic collapse analysis of marine structures.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone in the United States, and essential workers across industries like health care, agriculture, retail, transportation and food supply were key to our survival. Immigrants, overrepresented in essential industries but largely invisible in the public eye, were critical to our ability to weather the pandemic and recover from it. But who are they? How did they do the riskiest of jobs in the riskiest of times? And how were both U.S.-born and foreign-born residents affected? This report explores the crucial contributions of immigrant essential workers, their impact on the lives of those around them, and how they were affected by the pandemic, public sentiment and policies. It further explores the contradiction of immigrants being essential to all of our well-being yet denied benefits, protections and rights given to most others. The pandemic revealed the significant value of immigrant essential workers to the health of all Americans. This report places renewed emphasis on their importance to national well-being. The report first provides a demographic picture of foreign-born workers in key industries during the pandemic using U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) data. Part I then gives a detailed narrative of immigrants’ experiences and contributions to the country’s perseverance during the pandemic based on interviews with immigrant essential workers in California, Minnesota and Texas, as well as with policy experts and community organizers from across the country. Interviewees include: ■ A food packing worker from Mexico who saw posters thanking doctors and grocery workers but not those like her working in the fields. ■ A retail worker from Argentina who refused the vaccine due to mistrust of the government. ■ A worker in a check cashing store from Eritrea who felt a “responsibility to be able to take care of people” lining up to pay their bills. Part II examines how federal and state policies, as well as increased public recognition of the value of essential workers, failed to address the needs and concerns of immigrants and their families. Both foreign-born and U.S.-born people felt the consequences. Policies kept foreign-trained health care workers out of hospitals when intensive care units were full. They created food and household supply shortages resulting in empty grocery shelves. They denied workplace protections to those doing the riskiest jobs during a crisis. While legislation and programs made some COVID-19 relief money available, much of it failed to reach the immigrant essential workers most in need. Part II also offers several examples of local and state initiatives that stepped in to remedy this. By looking more deeply at the crucial role of immigrant essential workers and the policies that affect them, this report offers insight into how the nation can better respond to the next public health crisis.
