Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, the concept of steady-state dielectrophoretic-induced convection in confined dielectric liquids, by means of non-uniform non-intense electric fields, is introduced and investigated. First, theoretical foundations of electrohydrodynamics are presented and a multiphysics coupling between fluids mechanics, heat transfers, and electrostatics is made evident. It is shown that a dielectrophoretic (DEP) torque arises at leading order provided that a non-uniform electric field is imposed. Thus, in microgravity conditions, the possibility of setting a dielectric liquid in motion, even with a modest electric field intensity, is shown to be finally conceivable in conductive regime as well as in boundary layer regime. In this work, steady ThermoElectroHydroDynamic (TEHD) convection is investigated for the case of a dielectric liquid confined in a differentially-heated square cavity, submitted to an electric potential gradient imposed from an electrode pair. Two electrode configurations, that generate the required non-uniform electric fields, are proposed: a partial planar electrode pair and a triangular electrode pair. Scaling analysis and a numerical study are developed in order to investigate dielectrophoretic-induced convective heat transfers. The scaling laws and the numerical results show that a significant enhancement of heat transfers is made possible from the use of a non-intense non-uniform electric field, with no need for giving rise to unstable regimes. An experimental approach is also considered, reintroducing gravity and buoyancy-driven convection. Silicon oil is confined in a cavity, formed in a Plexiglas block, and sealed by a pair of electrodes, one of them is connected to a high voltage AC amplifier while the other one is grounded. Both electrodes are kept at different but constant temperatures. By means of PIV imaging of fluorescent tracers, the velocity field in steady-state is measured and processed, and the effect of the imposed DEP torque on the whole flow is made evident. In comparison with numerical simulations, similar tendencies can be observed relative to each electrode configuration. Finally, the temperature is measured at different locations on the experimental bench for the configuration based on partial electrodes. In presence of gravity, heat transfer enhancement, expected from the application of a non-uniform electric field, is not particularly pronounced since the flow is dominated by thermal buoyancy

Повний текст джерелаIn order to overcome the challenges associated with the design of high resolution image sensors, we propose, through this thesis, an innovative asynchronous event-driven image sensor based on non-uniform sampling. The proposed image sensor aims the reduction of the data flow and its associated data processing by limiting the activity of our image sensor to the new captured information. The proposed asynchronous image sensor is based on an event-driven pixels that incorporate a non-uniform sampling crossing levels. Unlike conventional imagers, where the pixels are read systematically at each frame, the proposed event-driven pixels are only read when they hold new and relevant information. This induces a reduced and scene dependent data flow.In this thesis, we introduce a complete pixel reading sequence. Beside the event-driven pixel, the proposed reading system is designed using asynchronous logic and adapted to control and manage the flow of data from event pixels. This digital reading system overcomes the traditional difficulties encountered in the management of simultaneous requests for event pixels without degrading the resolution and fill factor of the image sensor. In addition, the proposed reading circuit significantly reduces the spatial redundancy in an image which further reduces the data flow. Finally, by combining the aspect of level crossing sampling and the proposed reading technique, we replaced the conventional analog to digital conversion of the pixel processing chain by a time-to-digital Conversion (TDC). In other words, the pixel information is coded by time. This results in an increased reduction in power consumption of the vision system, the analog-digital converter being one of the most consuming reading system of conventional image sensors components

Повний текст джерелаHydraulic and mechanical instabilities in geomaterials refer to a variety of non-linear phenomena that can be triggered by heterogeneities inherent to such materials. While hydraulic instabilities manifest themselves as heterogeneous fluid invasion causing `fingering' phenomenon, mechanical instabilities represent strain localizations and/or fractures. These instabilities and their associated coupling pose a major obstacle for applications involving geomaterials such as Carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration and contaminant flow in ground waters. Existing classical models lack the required pattern-forming ingredients in their formulation and thus are stable against imposed perturbations. The essence of the current thesis work is to propose and investigate modeling techniques that allow to describe these instabilities. The constitutive approach adopted is that of micro-structured continua, in particular that of enhanced continua with a constitutive law depending on the gradient of so-called phase field variables. In the first part of this work, a fluid-fluid front has been described as a diffused interface by interpreting the presence of two fluids within the pore space as a single non-uniform fluid and the degree of saturation of one of the fluids as the corresponding phase field. While the classical one-to-one relation between capillary pressure and saturation degree describes retention properties of the porous network, an enhanced relation is obtained by prescribing a chemical potential in the spirit of Cahn-Hilliard type modeling of multi-phase fluids. This together with a non-local energy contribution provides the required ingredients required to describe hydraulic instabilites. In a one-dimensional setting, the proposed model allows to replicate experimentally observed non-monotonic saturation profiles during infiltration. Further, a slight non-convexity introduced into the flux function has been shown to allow modeling of drainage fronts, besides imbibition, without employing any additional complexities. A linear stability analysis (LSA) revealing the growth in time of arbitrary perturbations has been done, supplemented by two-dimensional simulations portraying the ability of the proposed model to describe fluid fingering and segregation. In the second part, triggering of a fracture within a drying porous medium has been studied. A prevailing modeling perspective, involving gradient damage modeling, has been first tested for its ability to replicate periodic fracture formation as observed in representative experiments. Further, a new paradigm has been introduced by interpreting the presence of a fracture as a loss of capillary properties, thus allowing passage of non-wetting fluid under vanishing capillary pressure. This is applicable to cohesion-less and unconsolidated fine-grained soils, where resistance against tensile loading is negligible and thus fracturing induced due to development of tensile stresses is not the prevailing phenomenon. Starting from the principles of variational approach, it has been shown that for sufficiently strong desiccation, damage initiates homogeneously on the drying face while progressing into the body with time. The possible occurrence of bifurcations of this base solution, representing initiation of periodic fractures, has been analyzed again in the framework of LSA.This work sets the stage for the study of coupling between the above mentioned instabilities and experimental investigation of unstable flow features such as pinching and coalescence of the wetting phase. Initiation of damage induced due to evolving drainage finger is also of particular interest in the context of earlier mentioned applications
