5′-Nucleotidases play an important role in the metabolism of nucleosides; for example, the hydrolysis of AMP generates adenosine, which can modulate a variety of cellular functions. We have used the membrane-bound AMPase from chicken gizzard and a secreted form of these enzymes to analyse their modification by the substrate analogue 5′-p-fluorosulphonylbenzoyladenosine (5′-FSBA). 5′-FSBA irreversibly inactivates 5′-nucleotidases by means of covalent modification of the proteins. ATP, a competitive inhibitor of chicken gizzard and snake-venom 5′-nucleotidase, abolished the inactivation by 5′-FSBA, demonstrating that the inactivation was due to the modification of amino acid residues essential for AMPase activity. We have synthesized radioactive 5′-FSBA, which was employed for the radiolabelling of chicken gizzard 5′-nucleotidase. Incorporation of radioactivity was completely abolished in the presence of ATP, which showed that 5′-FSBA acted by the selective modification of amino acid residues at the active site whereas other potential reactive residues of the protein were not attacked. Limited proteolysis of affinity-labelled chicken gizzard 5′-nucleotidase permitted the identification of digestion products containing the catalytic centre. Pseudo-first-order kinetics indicate that modification of a minimum of one amino acid side chain at the active centre is sufficient to result in inactivation of both chicken gizzard and snake-venom 5′-nucleotidases. Incorporation of the radioactive p-sulphonylbenzoyladenosine moiety parallels the inactivation of 5′-nucleotidase by 5′-FSBA and further substantiated the idea that modification of one amino acid residue at the active centre results in loss of the AMPase activity.

These studies centre on the ‘Barcelona’ karyotypic race of the western house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus), first described by Adolph & Klein (1981). This is one of many races within M. m. domesticus characterized by metacentric chromosomes that have originated by repeated Robertsonian fusions, with perhaps further modification by whole-arm reciprocal translocations. Data on 111 mice from 20 sites show that the race is centred 24 km to the west of Barcelona city and has a homozygous metacentric karyotype of 2n = 28 (3·8, 4·14, 5·15, 6·10, 9·11, 12·13). The race has a small range, and mice with the standard 40-acrocentric karyotype were caught only 30 km from the race centre. Throughout the area of occurrence of metacentrics there is polymorphism (i.e. presence of acrocentrics in the population), although all six metacentrics approach fixation close to the race centre. Thus, there is a hybrid zone between the Barcelona and standard races. The centres and widths of all clines (except 3·8) were determined. Likelihood ratio tests showed that most of the cline centres differed significantly in position (i.e. the clines were staggered) and the clines for metacentrics 6·10 and 9·11 were significantly narrower than those for 4·14, 5·15 and 12·13. Overall, the clines tended to be wider the further they were from the race centre. There are various possible explanations for this hybrid zone structure and further data are needed to distinguish between them.

Bleaching with the F-light at the excitation bandpass of 20 nm results in the phenomenon that F-centre peak and thermoluminescence (TL) glow peaks due to Fz- and F-centres identically decrease with the F-bleach time, whereas TL glow peak due to Fz-centre only remains almost constant irrespective of its time in the case of that at the excitation bandpass of 5 nm. Analysing the data on bleaching effects, absorption spectrum of X-ray irradiated KCl:Eu2+ crystal has a peak due to Fz-centre approximately within 20 nm of the wavelength 560 nm at F-centre peak. Electrons released from Fz-centres at 370 K and from F-centres at 450 K combine with Eu3+ ions, leading to the excited Eu2+ ions from which the luminescence at 420 nm is emitted.

El presente artículo pretende analizar qué aspectos consideran importantes los usuarios de centros deportivos y qué elementos les motivan a inscribirse en ellos, atendiendo a características sociodemográficas como el género, el nivel de estudios, la ocupación o el nivel socioeconómico. Para ello, se han analizado las opiniones de usuarios actuales y potenciales de centros deportivos, preguntándoles acerca de los aspectos comentados anteriormente, ofreciendo una escala de respuesta tipo Likert de 5 puntos. Los resultados indican que la localización del centro, así como que el centro tenga entrenadores personales, actividades dirigidas y que sea multidisciplinar, son elementos importantes para ellos. Por otro lado, también se observa que la higiene, la amabilidad de los entrenadores, el equipamiento o el nivel tecnológico del centro, son los elementos que les motivan a la hora de elegir un centro deportivo. Por tanto, conociendo los criterios de importancia y motivación, los gestores disponen de información útil para poder orientar de manera más efectiva sus estrategias de marketing, con la intención de ajustarse en mayor medida a las demandas e intereses de los usuarios, mejorando la satisfacción de los usuarios actuales y aumentando las probabilidades de elección por parte de los potenciales. Abstract. This article aims to analyse which aspects are considered important by users of sports centres and which elements motivate them to join such centres, considering socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, educational level, occupation or socio-economic level. For this purpose, the opinions of current and potential users of sports centres have been analysed, asking them about the aspects mentioned above, offering a 5-point Likert type response scale. The results indicate that centre location, as well as the fact that the centre has personal trainers, guided activities and that it is multidisciplinary, are important elements for them. On the other hand, it is also observed that hygiene, the kindness of trainers, the equipment or the technological level of the centre, are the elements that motivate them when choosing a sports centre. Therefore, knowing the importance and motivation criteria, managers have useful information to be able to orient their marketing strategies more effectively, with the intention of adjusting to the demands and interests of users to a greater extent, improving the satisfaction of current users and increasing the probabilities of choice by potential users.

Background: The morbidity rates for Whipple’s procedure has remained high even as mortality rates were coming down. This study was intended to assess postoperative morbidity rates in a tertiary care centre and to compare it with other centres.Methods: Data was collected from various registers and medical records for this retrospective cohort study. All Whipple’s procedures for 5 years were included in the study. Statistical analysis was done using R statistical software and the results were tabulated.Results: There were 48 patients and half of them developed morbidity. Surgical site infection was the most common complication (18.8%) followed by pulmonary complications (12.5%) and bile leak (6.25%). Half of the patients having pulmonary complications died while nobody with surgical site infection or bile leak died.Conclusions: In this study the morbidity rates were comparable to other centres. Hypoalbuminemia is a significant predictor of morbidity. Surgical site infection was the most common morbidity. Pulmonary complications were the most common cause for death. Morbidity rate is comparable to other centres and Whipple’s procedure is a safe surgery in the tertiary centre where the study was conducted.

Abstract AIMS To audit the use of 5-ALA at WCFT to determine adherence to NICE guidance [NG99] and the Trust guideline. METHOD Data was retrospectively evaluated from 77 patients prescribed 5-ALA at WCFT Jan 2020 – Jan 2022. RESULTS Of the 77 patients, 61 (79%) patients had 5-ALA induced fluorescence documented intraoperatively which aided resection and 7 patients (9%) had no confirmed fluorescence. In patients with no fluorescence noted, the administration time to operation time was variable. The remaining 9 patients (12%) had no documentation on the presence or absence of fluorescence. Prior to surgery, 67 patients had an MDT outcome of likely high grade glioma. 66 patients had this confirmed with histology post-surgical resection. The remaining patients had various MDT diagnosis documented including oligoastrocytoma, oligodendroglioma and lesion. 87% of patients had the correct dose of 20mg/kg prescribed. 14 patients (18%) did not have liver function tests (LFT) checked during admission as per Trust policy. Of those checked, 29 patients (37%) had new derangement of LFT. CONCLUSION The use of 5-ALA has aided surgical resection, enabling greater resection in the majority of patients prescribed for at WCFT. It has been used in accordance with NICE for HGG resections in 87% of cases. Some improvement could be made in ensuring the correct dose is prescribed and the appropriate monitoring (LFT) is carried out post procedure. Theatre documentation could be improved so future audit can more easily identify extent of resection and extent of fluorescence.

AimsTo evaluate the treatment of conjunctival melanoma at a large Dutch referral centre and to make recommendations for clinical management.MethodsA retrospective review was performed of clinical and histological data of 70 patients treated for a primary conjunctival melanoma between 2001 and 2014 at the Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands. Detailed follow-up data were available for all patients.ResultsThe mean follow-up time was 70.2 months. The overall 5-year recurrence rate was 29%, the 5-year metastasis rate 12% and the 5-year melanoma-related survival 90%. Treatment with excision alone had a significantly higher 5-year recurrence rate than (the combination of) other treatments (HR 3.73,95% CI 1.19 to 11.6, P=0.02). Initial treatment in an ocular oncology centre was associated with fewer recurrences compared with initial treatment by a local ophthalmologist of a referring centre (HR 0.32,95% CI 0.11 to 0.94, P=0.04), despite similar tumour baseline characteristics.ConclusionConjunctival melanoma is a rare disease with a high recurrence rate. A treatment strategy with local excision and adjuvant therapy gave a good clinical outcome, excision alone as a treatment should be considered obsolete. Initial treatment in a large referral centre improves clinical outcome, and patients should be referred to a specialised centre as soon as possible.

The National Tree Seed Centre has been providing seed of known origin and quality for research for 40 years. Seed is also stored for long-term gene conservation purposes to provide a source of germplasm for future research and restoration. This is particularly important for species facing such threats as insect attack, disease, climate change, or conversion of forest land to non-forest uses. The Centre's inventory focuses on native tree and shrub species, striving to store samples from throughout their ranges. Over 26 000 seed samples have been sent to researchers in 65 countries, 70% of these samples being distributed within Canada. Seed research has always been a component of the Seed Centre's program. One notable accomplishment is the development of the Petawawa Germination Box. The Seed Centre participates in and contributes to activities of the Association of Official Seed Analysts, the International Seed Testing Association, and the IUFRO Seed Physiology and Technology Research Group. In the aeronautical supply chain, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) lack of these types of alliances with universities and other research institutions, which could give them access to shared and specialized knowledge, may strictly limit those companies to learning from their own experience. One way to break this dynamic for industrial companies is to be an active part of research, development, and innovation centres. In this paper, a study to create new advanced manufacturing centres is presented, centres whose activities are focused on Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 5–7. The approach is based on a project management methodology, and it is applied to the aeronautical sector in the Basque Country. An initial study of the international experience and state of the art in this type of facility, as well as an analysis of the current socioeconomic environment of the Basque Country are presented. A benchmark study was done to identify the key processes that this centre must promote for this initiative to succeed, or those areas of knowledge that can make or break the initiative. Finally, the results showed a definitive picture for establishing an advanced manufacturing centre in the Basque Country. This work lays both the foundations of knowledge in the sector and the difficulties noted, so it can serve as guidance for similar initiatives.

Abstract Background. Among major European centres which had undertaken more than 30 bone-marrow transplantations(BMT) between Jan 1, 1987, and Dec 31, 1995, the outcome of allogenic BMT for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first complete remission has been shown to be influenced by the centre in which the procedure is done. To determine whether similar variation exists 10 years later, we analysed leukaemia free survival (LFS), relapse incidence (RI) and treatment related mortality (TRM) across the same 13 transplant centres. Methods. Thirteen centres were included in the analysis which enrolled 515 patients (aged 16–55 years), between 1987 and 1995, for acute myeloid leukaemia in first complete remission and 455 patients were enrolled between 1996 and 2005. Patients were followed from the date of transplantation to the time of event (Relapse and/or deaths). Regression models taking into account centre effect was adapted to the outcome and adjusted for relevant covariates Findings The overall results at 5 years were 57% (95% CI 54–61) for leukaemia-free survival (LFS), 22% (19–25) for relapse incidence (RI), and 21% (18–24) for treatment related mortality (TRM) with a range for centres of 41–67%, 13–41%, and 13–41%, respectively. LFS at 5 years before 1995 was significantly lower 54% than after 1995 62% (p=0.02). Relapse Incidence at 5 years before 1995 was not significantly lower 23% than after 1995 21% (p=0.34). Treatment-related mortality incidence at 5 years before 1995 was not significantly lower 25% than after 1995 21% (p=0.13). Analysis showed the centre effect to be highly significant for LFS and TRM, but not for RI. Interpretation These findings show that the results of BMT have improved over time in Europe. At the same time this study confirms a significant centre-specific variation in the success of bone transplantation in Europe. This effect has persisted despite advances in transplantation, which have lead to improvements in patient outcomes (leukaemia free survival and Treatment Related Mortality). Further studies are needed to elucidate the causes of this variation, with the goal of developing strategies to minimize the centre effect and ensure the best possible outcomes for all transplant recipients.

Abstract Introduction Access to clinical trials is a common request for patients with brain tumours. However, opening clinical trials requires additional work per centre opened. We have previously shown that surgical and oncology workload varies between centres, and fluctuates over time. There is a trade-off between offering access to clinical trials and increasing costs associated with opening trials in centres that treat few patients. Methods We used two separate datasets from England covering 3 years – one for neurosurgical workload and one for radiotherapy. We only included adult patients and calculated cumulative proportions of the malignant primary brain tumour population (C71) by number of centres. We investigated stability by checking how many patients would have to be added/ removed from a centre to change their rank. Results There were 7061 surgical and 5060 radiotherapy patients. To capture 25% of patients, we would need to open trials in 4 surgical/5 radiotherapy centres; for 50%, 9 surgical/ 13 radiotherapy centres; for 75%, 16 surgical/ 24 radiotherapy centres. Centre rank was fluid: adding 16 surgical/9 radiotherapy patients would change the rank of a centre. Discussion These are the first data to allow for rational planning of trials in brain tumour patients. We have shown that we can reach 75% of the brain tumour population by opening trials in ~50% of surgical and radiotherapy centres. Centre rank alters over year, so we should be cautious about being too prescriptive. Nonetheless, these data should allow some rational planning of trial centre inclusion.

We have surveyed 58 fields near rich clusters of galaxies with the Very Large Array using scaled arrays in the B/C and/or C/O configurations at 1�5 GHz and 4�9 GHz. The fields were centred on steep spectrum sources in or near clusters that were earlier surveyed with lower resolution telescopes. The whole-field maps at 1�5 GHz are given and a list of 940 sources with 1�5 GHz flux densities down to -1 mJy is presented. Spectral indices of sources within 5' of the field centres are given. Complete flux-limited samples of sources are used to establish a criterion for cluster membership. Sources with total 1�5 GHz flux density >20 mjy and closer to the cluster centre than 0�28 of the cluster radius (a total of 57 sources) are accepted as cluster members.

The article describes the general characteristics of logistics centres. In particular, their functions, types and characteristics of the model logistics centre were presented. The logistics centres associated in Europlatforms have been described, focusing on those countries where the number of centres is the largest, i.e. Germany, Spain, France and Italy. The factors determining the decision making regarding the selection of the optimal location of a logistics centre in Europe have been discussed, and also the places currently enjoying the greatest interest in the logistics industry have been shown. The development perspectives of Polish logistic facilities are presented and factors influencing the investment attractiveness of Poland are described.

The title compound, C14H10O5, was isolated from Senecio cannabifolius Less var. integrifolius aqueous extract. The structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data, including MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, and the relative configuration was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The benzofuran ring is almost coplanar with the furan ring [dihedral angle = 10.47 (15)°]. A chain is formed through supramolecular R 2 2(10) synthons and three-centre hydrogen bonds.

The non-H atoms in the organic component of the title compound, C8H7N3OS2·H2O, are almost coplanar, as the dihedral angle between the two ring planes is only 1.8 (2)°; there is a wide C—C—C angle of 127.8 (3)° at the methine C atom linking the two rings. The molecular components are linked into a three-dimensional framework structure by two-centre hydrogen bonds of N—H...O and O—H...N types, together with a three-centre O—H...(N,S) system. Comparisons are made with some (Z)-5-arylmethylidene-2-sulfanylidene-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones.

Background: Acute pancreatitis is rare in pregnancy, but it is associated with increased incidence of maternal and fetal mortality. It should be one of the differential diagnosis of upper abdominal pain with or without nausea or vomiting. S. amylase, lipase and ultrasound abdomen were the diagnostic methods. Conservative management is the main stay in mild cases. Severe cases have multiorgan involvement and needs multidisciplinary approach. The objectives of this study were to study the maternal and fetal outcome in pregnant women diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and to identify the risk factors for acute pancreatitis in pregnancy.Methods: Retrospective descriptive study of pregnant women diagnosed with acute pancreatitis in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi during the period of 5 years from January 2011 to December 2016. A proforma having patients age, parity index, gestational age, symptoms with duration, blood investigations, ultrasonography, interventions done, mode of delivery, supportive treatment, complications were developed. Fetal weight, Apgar score, fetal complications were also noted.Results: The mean gestational age of presentation was 30 weeks of pregnancy. Upper abdominal pain radiating to back, vomiting, fever was the commonest clinical presentation in majority of cases. The diagnostic methods were S.Amylase ,Lipase and Ultrasound abdomen. The mean age of the patients were 26 years and 66.7% were primigravidas in the present study. There were 4 patients in SAP and 5 in MAP groups. Complications in SAP group were ARF, ARDS, DIC, MODS, metabolic acidosis etc. SAP group had 3 maternal and 3 fetal loss.Conclusions: Severe acute pancreatitis has adverse maternal and fetal outcome due to multi organ failure and sepsis.
