A major hallmark of cancer is successful evasion of regulated forms of cell death. Ferroptosis is a recently discovered type of regulated necrosis which, unlike apoptosis or necroptosis, is independent of caspase activity and receptor-interacting protein 1 (RIPK1) kinase activity. Instead, ferroptotic cells die following iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, a process which is antagonised by glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1). Importantly, tumour cells escaping other forms of cell death have been suggested to maintain or acquire sensitivity to ferroptosis. Therefore, therapeutic exploitation of ferroptosis in cancer has received increasing attention. Here, we systematically review current literature on ferroptosis signalling, cross-signalling to cellular metabolism in cancer and a potential role for ferroptosis in tumour suppression and tumour immunology. By summarising current findings on cell biology relevant to ferroptosis in cancer, we aim to point out new conceptual avenues for utilising ferroptosis in systemic treatment approaches for cancer.

Cell-in-cell structures (CICs) refer to cytoplasmic internalization of a cell by another cell, which are found throughout various biological systems and have been a part of scientific dogma for a long time. However, neither the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon nor their possible roles in disease development have resulted in major breakthroughs until recent years. In view of the ubiquity of CICs in inflammatory tissue and tumors, it is tempting to think that these specific structures could be associated with clinical diagnosis and treatment and thus would become a new hotspot for translational medicine. Translational medicine is a new concept in the field of international biomedical research that appeared in the last 20 years, which transforms basic research into clinical application. With the growing interest in this field, this review addresses recent research on CICs and their potential clinical implications in cytomorphological diagnosis and the pathology of human diseases, while discussing as yet unanswered questions. We also put forward future directions to reduce the gap in our knowledge caused by our currently limited understanding of CICs.

Research using stem cells has several applications in basic biology and clinical medicine. Recent advances in the establishment of male germ line stem cells provided researchers with the ability to identify, isolate, maintain, expand and differentiate the spermatogonia, the primitive male germ cells, as cell lines under in vitro conditions. The ability to culture and manipulate stem cell lines from male germ cells has gradually facilitated research into spermatogenesis and male infertility, to an extent beyond that facilitated by the use of somatic stem cells. After the introduction of exogenous genes, the spermatogonial cells can be transplanted into the seminiferous tubules of recipients, where the transplanted cells can contribute to the offspring. The present review concentrates on the origin, life cycle and establishment of stem cell lines from male germ cells, as well as the current status of transplantation techniques and the application of spermatogonial stem cell lines.

Historically, much of biology was studied by physicists and mathematicians. With the advent of modern molecular biology, a wave of researchers became trained in a new scientific discipline filled with the language of genes, mutants, and the central dogma. These new molecular approaches have provided volumes of information on biomolecules and molecular pathways from the cellular to the organismal level. The challenge now is to determine how this seemingly endless list of components works together to promote the healthy function of complex living systems. This effort requires an interdisciplinary approach by investigators from both the biological and the physical sciences.

<p class="Abstrak"><strong>Abstract:</strong> The purpose of this research was to find out the teaching materials that needed to be developed in Cell Biology courses at Malang City Universities. The study was conducted on students who have taken Cell Biology courses in four college at the Malang city. The type of research conducted is quantitative descriptive research. The results showed that students were interested in Cell Biology courses and in the Cell Biology course there were several topics which were considered difficult including cell division, cell division control, and cancer, while for the results of the study related to the availability of teaching materials used, data were obtained that in three universities, namely UNISMA, UMM, and IKIP Budi Utomo, the percentage was more than 50% while for UIN the percentage was 48%. Students consider teaching that has not been able to construct understanding of concepts in studying Cell Biology courses so it is necessary to develop research-based module teaching materials.</p><strong>Abstrak:</strong> Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bahan ajar yang perlu dikembangkan pada matakuliah Biologi Sel di Perguruan Tinggi Kota Malang. Penelitian dilakukan terhadap mahasiswa yang telah menempuh matakuliah Biologi Sel di empat Perguruan Tinggi kota Malang. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan adalah penelitian deksriptif kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa tertarik pada matakuliah Biologi Sel dan pada matakuliah Biologi Sel terdapat beberapa topik yang dianggap sulit antara lain pembelahan sel, pengendalian pembelahan sel, dan kanker. Hasil penelitian terkait ketersediaan bahan ajar yang digunakan diperoleh data bahwa pada tiga perguruan tinggi yaitu UNISMA, UMM, dan IKIP Budi Utomo diperoleh persentase lebih dari 50% sedangkan untuk UIN didapatkan persentase sebesar 48%. Mahasiswa menganggap ajar yang digunakan belum dapat mengonstruk pemahaman konsep dalam mempelajari matakuliah Biologi Sel sehingga perlu adanya pengembangan bahan ajar modul berbasis penelitian.

Since Nirenberg and Matthaei used cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) to elucidate the genetic code in the early 1960s [1], the technology has been developed over the course of decades and applied to studying both fundamental and applied biology [2]. Cell-free synthetic biology integrating CFPS with synthetic biology has received attention as a powerful and rapid approach to characterize and engineer natural biological systems. The open nature of cell-free (or in vitro) biological platforms compared to in vivo systems brings an unprecedented level of control and freedom in design [3]. This versatile engineering toolkit has been used for debugging biological networks, constructing artificial cells, screening protein libraries, prototyping genetic circuits, developing biosensors, producing metabolites, and synthesizing complex proteins including antibodies, toxic proteins, membrane proteins, and novel proteins containing nonstandard (unnatural) amino acids. Viruses exhibit an elegant simplicity, as they are so basic, but so frightening. Although only a few are life threatening, they have substantial implications for human health and the economy, as exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Viruses are rather small infectious agents found in all types of life forms, from animals and plants to prokaryotes and archaebacteria. They are obligate intracellular parasites, and as such, subvert many molecular and cellular processes of the host cell to ensure their own replication, amplification, and subsequent spread. This special issue addresses the cell biology of viral infections based on a collection of original research articles, communications, opinions, and reviews on various aspects of virus-host cell interactions. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa tertarik pada matakuliah Biologi Sel dan pada matakuliah Biologi Sel terdapat beberapa topik yang dianggap sulit antara lain pembelahan sel, pengendalian pembelahan sel, dan kanker. Hasil penelitian terkait ketersediaan bahan ajar yang digunakan diperoleh data bahwa pada tiga perguruan tinggi yaitu UNISMA, UMM, dan IKIP Budi Utomo diperoleh persentase lebih dari 50% sedangkan untuk UIN didapatkan persentase sebesar 48%. Mahasiswa menganggap ajar yang digunakan belum dapat mengonstruk pemahaman konsep dalam mempelajari mata kuliah Biologi Sel sehingga perlu adanya pengembangan bahan ajar modul berbasis penelitian.
