When switching tasks, performance tends to be worse for n – 2 repetitions than with n – 2 switches. This n – 2 repetition cost has been hypothesized to reflect task-set inhibition: specifically, inhibition of irrelevant category–response mappings involved in response selection. This hypothesis leads to divergent predictions for situations in which all tasks involve the same stimulus categories: An n – 2 repetition cost is predicted when response sets differ across tasks, but not when the response set stays the same. The authors tested these predictions by having subjects perform relative judgements with different reference points. In Experiment 1, the stimulus categories were the same across reference points, but the response set either differed or stayed the same (the multiple- and single-mapping conditions, respectively). An n – 2 repetition cost was found in the multiple-mapping condition but not in the single-mapping condition. Experiment 2 provided evidence against the possibility that these divergent effects reflected differences in memory load. These findings confirm predictions that link n – 2 repetition costs to inhibition of irrelevant category–response mappings.

Object It has been hypothesized that a certain degree of specialization exists within language areas, depending on some specific lexical repertories or categories. To spare hypothetical category-specific cortical areas and to gain a better understanding of their organization, the authors studied patients who had undergone electrical stimulation mapping for brain tumors and they compared an object-naming task with a category-specific task (color naming). Methods Thirty-six patients with no significant preoperative language deficit were prospectively studied during a 2-year period. Along with a reading task, both object- and color-naming tasks were used in brain mapping. During color naming, patients were asked to identify 11 visually presented basic colors. The modality specificity of the colornaming sites found was subsequently tested by asking patients to retrieve the color attributes of objects. High individual variability was observed in language organization among patients and in the tasks performed. Significant interferences in color naming were found in traditional language regions—that is, Broca (p < 0.003) and Wernicke centers (p = 0.05)—although some color-naming areas were occasionally situated outside of these regions. Color-naming interferences were exclusively localized in small cortical areas (< 1 cm2). Anatomical segregation of the different naming categories was apparent in 10 patients; in all, 13 color-specific naming areas (that is, sites evoking no object-naming interference) were detected in the dominant-hemisphere F3 and the supramarginal, angular, and posterior parts of the temporal gyri. Nevertheless, no specific brain region was found to be consistently involved in color naming (p > 0.05). At five sites, although visually presented color-naming tasks were impaired by stimulation, auditory color naming (for example, “What color is grass?”) was performed with no difficulty, showing that modality-specific areas can be found during naming. Conclusions Within language areas, a relative specialization of cortical language areas for color naming can be found during electrical stimulation mapping.

We construct a category of short hammocks and show that it has the weak homotopy type of mapping spaces. In doing so we tackle the problem of applying the nerve to large categories without the use of multiple universes. We also explore what the mapping space is. The main tool in showing the connection between hammocks and mapping spaces will be the use of homotopy groupoids, homotopy groupoid actions and the homotopy fiber of their corresponding bar constructions.

There are several reasons to be interested in conformal field theories in two dimensions. Apart from arising in various physical applications, ranging from statistical mechanics to string theory, conformal field theory is a class of quantum field theories that is interesting on its own. First of all there is a large amount of symmetries. In addition, many of the interesting theories satisfy a finiteness condition, that together with the symmetries allows for a fully non-perturbative treatment, and even for a complete solution in a mathematically rigorous manner. One of the crucial tools which make such a treatment possible is provided by category theory. This thesis contains results relevant for two different classes of conformal field theory. We partly treat rational conformal field theory, but also derive results that aim at a better understanding of logarithmic conformal field theory. For rational conformal field theory, we generalize the proof that the construction of correlators, via three-dimensional topological field theory, satisfies the consistency conditions to oriented world sheets with defect lines. We also derive a classifying algebra for defects. This is a semisimple commutative associative algebra over the complex numbers whose one-dimensional representations are in bijection with the topological defect lines of the theory. Then we relax the semisimplicity condition of rational conformal field theory and consider a larger class of categories, containing non-semisimple ones, that is relevant for logarithmic conformal field theory. We obtain, for any finite-dimensional factorizable ribbon Hopf algebra H, a family of symmetric commutative Frobenius algebras in the category of bimodules over H. For any such Frobenius algebra, which can be constructed as a coend, we associate to any Riemann surface a morphism in the bimodule category. We prove that this morphism is invariant under a projective action of the mapping class group ofthe Riemann surface. This suggests to regard these morphisms as candidates for correlators of bulk fields of a full conformal field theories whose chiral data are described by the category of left-modules over H.

Design fixation is a phenomenon experienced by professional designers and engineering design students that stifles creativity and innovation through discouraging ideational productivity, fluency and diversity. During the design idea and concept generation phase of the design process, a reliance on perceptual surface feature similarities between design artefacts increases the likelihood of design fixation leading to design duplication. Psychologists, educators and designers have become increasingly interested in creative idea generation processes that encourage innovation and entrepreneurial outcomes. However, there is a notable lack of collaborative research between psychology, education and engineering design particularly on inductive reasoning of undergraduate engineering students in higher education. The data gathered and analysed for this study provides an insight into property inference decision-making preferences and decision switching (SWITCH) patterns of engineering undergraduates under similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] and category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. For this psychology experiment, property induction tasks were devised using abstract shapes in a triad configuration. Participants (N = 180), on an undergraduate engineering programme in London, observed a triad of shapes with a target shape more similar-looking to one of two given shapes. Factors manipulated for this experiment included category alignment, category group, property type and target shape. Despite the cognitive development and maturation stage of undergraduate engineers (adults) in higher education, this study identified similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] to play a significant role during inductive reasoning relative to the strength of category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. In addition to revealing the property inference decision-making preferences of a sample of undergraduate engineers (N = 180), two types of switch classification and two types of non-switch classification (SWITCH) were found and named SIM_NCC, SIM-Salient, Reverse_CAT and CAT_Switching. These different classifications for property inference switching and non-switching presented a more complex pattern of decision-making driven by the relative strength between similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] and category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. The conditions that encouraged CAT_Switching is of particular interest to design because it corresponds to inference decision switching that affirms the sharing of properties between dissimilar-looking shapes designated as category members, i.e., in a conflicting category alignment condition (CoC). For CAT_Switching, this study found a significant interaction between a particular set of conditions that significantly increased the likelihood of property inference decisions switching to affirm the sharing of properties between dissimilar-looking shapes. Stimuli conditions that combined a conflicting category alignment condition (where dissimilar-looking shapes belong to the same category) with category specificity, a causal property and a target shape with merged (or blended) perceptual surface features significantly increased the likelihood of a property inference decision switching. CAT_Switching has important implications for greater ideational productivity, fluency and diversity to discourage design fixation within the conceptual design space. CAT_Switching conditions could encourage more creative design transformations with alternative design functions through inductive inferences that generalise between dissimilar artefact designs. The findings from this study led to proposing a Cartesian view of the concept design space to represent the possibilities for greater movements through flexible and expanding category boundaries to encourage conceptual combinations, greater ideational fluency and greater ideational diversity within a configuration design space. This study has also created a platform for further research into property inference decision-making, ideational diversity and category boundary flexibility under stimuli conditions that encourage designers and design students to make inductive generalisations between dissimilar domains of knowledge through a greater emphasis on causal relations and semantic networks.

Category-Constrained Web Search is a very popular mechanism provided by information sources, such as online stores and shopping sites. In Category- Constrained Web Search, a category is selected to restrict the query to match instances in that category, and it can not only reduce the search space but also improves the response time and the quality of query results. Users usually select a category after navigating along the category directory, and then submit queries to find web pages whose descriptions match the query in the selected category. In recent year, there are more and more online sources that are available on the web, but different online sources usually have their own category directory. Observe that most of category directories from the same domain may be similar but not identical. The category that is selected by users could be classified at the different level of different category directories. In this thesis, we study the problem of integrating the multilevel category mapping between different online sources. We use a greedy selection approach to find the single-level category mapping. Finally, we propose two multilevel selection approaches to find the most exact multilevel category mapping set from the single- level mapping result. Our experiment shows that we can find the more exact category mapping set by integrating multilevel category mapping.

In recent years, there are more and more online databases generate pages dynamically on the World Wide Web. These web databases usually provide a query interface for user search the information they care about. For example, the shopping websites provide query interface that allow users to search products under some kind of category. After users submit queries, the shopping website database will return web pages contain related products’ information. The selection of category can help users to reduce the space of search in a few categories. The benefit of this action is to improve the accuracy of return pages and save search time. However, different web databases usually have their own category directories. These category directories may be very similar but not identical. In this thesis, we focus on finding the category mapping between different shopping websites. We transform each web page and category in the shopping websites into an n-dimensional vector space. We then use cosine similarity measure to predict the web pages (documents) belong to which category in other shopping websites, and calculate the precision and recall value to evaluate the performance of the web page prediction. Finally, we propose a classification-based greedy selection approach to select a best mapping category set between these different shopping websites. If we can find a good category mapping among related shopping webs databases, users will get complete and high-accuracy information quickly at a time.

In the rise of Wisdom Literature in less than a century from obscurity to ubiquity, a number of crucial questions have been left unanswered. Most fundamentally, when, how, and why did the category, comprised essentially of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, develop? The definitional issues long plaguing Wisdom scholarship can be traced to that unquestioned “universal consensus.” This book unearths its origin, describes its distorting effect, and proposes an alternative approach. Absent from early Jewish and Christian interpretation, the Wisdom category first emerged in modern scholarship, with the traits associated with it, such as universalism, humanism, rationalism, and secularism, suspiciously mirroring the ideals of its nineteenth-century German birthplace. Since it was originally assembled to reflect modern values, biblical scholars have struggled to define the corpus on any other basis or integrate it into the theology of the Hebrew Bible. The problem, however, is not only why the texts were perceived in this way, but that they are perceived in only one way at all. This book builds on recent literary and cognitive theory to create an alternative approach to genre that integrates hermeneutical insight from various genre groupings. This theory is then applied to Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs, mapping out the complex intertextual network contributing to each book’s meaning. Seen from multiple perspectives, these texts emerge in three dimensions, as facets previously obscured by the category are illuminated once again. The death of the Wisdom Literature category offers new life to both the so-called Wisdom texts and the concept of wisdom.

If synaesthesia is defined, as Cytowic once proposed, as a strange sensory blending, the category can include many other cases beyond the well-known colored-hearing and color-grapheme experiences. The extension of the category of synaesthesia to cases like mirror-touch, personification, crossmodal mappings, and drug experiences has helped produce a range of new evidence for the causes and prevalence of the condition. It also raises new questions regarding the unity of the synaesthetic label. The volume provides an overview of the varieties of sensory blending counted as ‘synaesthetic’, and discusses whether they should be viewed as a single condition or as several distinct, more or less related phenomena. The volume brings together contributions from leading cognitive neuroscientists and philosophers to consider for the first time the broader theoretical lessons arising from these cases of sensory blending, whether for the nature of perception and consciousness in general, the boundaries between perception, illusion, and imagination, the nature of vicarious experiences, or the unity of the senses.

We have seen several examples of these already, such as the Kan–Quillen model structure as a localization of the categorical model structure on simplicial sets, as well as the various model structures on the category of dendroidal sets. In the next chapter, it will be necessary to have a general method of constructing such localizations, starting only from a ‘basic’ model structure and a set of morphisms which one would like to make weak equivalences. We will establish the technique to do so in this chapter.

AbstractIn many religious traditions, anthropomorphism plays a central role in visual representations of the divine. As suggested by the notion of minimally counterintuitive properties (e.g., Boyer, Mapping the mind: Domain specificity in cognition and culture, New York, pp. 391–411, 1994), some peculiar ontological arrangements (e.g., ontological violations) tend to characterize religious representations. In the case of human-like God figures, such ontological peculiarities may consist of either: a combination of humanness and non-humanness (e.g., a human figure with wings), or a lack of central characteristics presenting qualities that are central to the human category (e.g., a face). The former corresponds to Guthrie’s (Faces in the clouds: A new theory of religion, New York, 1993) observation of the recurrent sameness-otherness combination with the human being to depict the divine. Such conceptual arrangements may change across a child’s development. However, research on children’s God representations has systematically considered anthropomorphic figures as distinct from non-anthropomorphic ones. The current work proposes a revised developmental model that accounts for domain-specific properties used by children to signify the special position of God as compared to human beings. That model is particularly appropriate to consider God representations as depicted in children’s drawings.

This chapter aims to introduce sufficient category theory to enable a formal understanding of the rest of the book. It first introduces the fundamental notion of a category. It then introduces functors, which are maps between categories. Next it introduces natural transformations, which are natural ways of mapping between functors. The stage is then set to at last introduces monads, which are defined in terms of functors and natural transformations. The last part of the chapter provides a compositional calculus with monads for natural language semantics (in other words, a logic for working with monads) and then relates the compositional calculus to Glue Semantics and to a very simple categorial grammar for parsing. The chapter ends with some exercises to aid understanding.

Pinn and Laurie Zoloth discuss the fluidity of the term “religion.” This stems from Zoloth’s initial definition that sought to show how capital-R religion is largely a Protestant category to order data, but that small-r religion is what all engage in, in some way, shape, or form. Pinn argues that this—especially the latter term—allows Zoloth to see religion as a way that humans make homes for themselves, both literally and also within the larger universe. Pinn argues that this means we need to better account for the role of bodies and embodiment.

This white paper provides guidance for mapping risk informed applications to PRA Scope and Technical Adequacy requirements. The discussion considers regulatory guidance contained in SRP 19.1 “Determining the Technical Adequacy of Probabilistic Risk Assessment Results for Risk Informed Activities” and supplements industry guidance on application mapping contained in Section 3 “Risk Assessment Application Process of the ASME Standard for the PRA for Nuclear Power Plant Applications,” of the ASME PRA Standard with Regulatory Guide 1.200 clarifications. The general processes identified in this paper should also be applicable to mapping applications to any of the forthcoming ANS standard requirements. The aim of this white paper is to help identify which ASME PRA Standard High Level Requirements (HLRs) fall in the scope of a particular “risk informed” application to the NRC that will, in part, justify the requested change with risk metrics. To obtain values for risk metrics, it is necessary to manipulate the plant PRA model. The question becomes what should be changed in the model to represent the “risk informed” topic at hand? Each HLR has a set of supporting requirements (SRs) graded by “Capability Categories.” For many supporting requirements (SRs) under each HLR, there is no difference between the three capability categories. At issue is what features of the model have to conform to Capability Category 2 when Capability Category 2 differs from Capability Category 1.

The mapping of the use of the land in a certain region allows theidentification of the available resources in it. In that way, the areaof remote sensoring searches for ways of processing large amountsof data with reliability in its results. This paper compares the automatedprocess of image, along with a spacial filter, with the imageedited manually. The overall accuracy for each categorized imageresulted in 71,3% for simple category, 72,6% for filtered categoryand 94,5% for manually edited category.

This report presents an analysis of the threat posed by active volcanoes in Canada and outlines directives to bring Canadian volcano monitoring and research into alignment with global best practices. We analyse 28 Canadian volcanoes in terms of their relative threat to people, aviation and infrastructure. The methodology we apply to assess volcanic threat was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as part of the 2005 National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS). Each volcano is scored on a number of hazard and exposure factors, producing an overall threat score. The overall threat scores are then assigned to five threat categories ranging from Very Low to Very High. We adjusted the methodology slightly to better suit Canadian volcano conditions by adding an additional knowledge uncertainty score; this does not affect the threat scoring or ranking. Our threat assessment places two volcanoes into the Very High threat category (Mt. Meager and Mt. Garibaldi). Three Canadian volcanoes score in the High threat category (Mt. Cayley, Mt. Price and Mt. Edziza) and two volcanoes score in the Moderate threat category (the Nass River group and Mt. Silverthrone). We compare the ranked Canadian volcanoes to similarly scored volcanoes in the USA and assess the current levels of volcano monitoring against internationally recognised monitoring strategies. We find that even the most thoroughly-studied volcano in Canada (Mt. Meager) falls significantly short of the recommended monitoring level (Mt. Meager is currently monitored at a level commensurate with a Very Low threat edifice, according to NVEWS recommendations). All other Canadian volcanoes are unmonitored (other than falling within a regional seismic network emplaced to monitor tectonic earthquakes). Based on the relative threat and scientific uncertainty surrounding some Canadian volcanoes, we outline five strategies to improve volcano monitoring in Canada and lower the uncertainty about eruption style and frequency: installation of real-time seismic stations at all Very High and High threat volcanoes, comprehensive lithofacies studies at Mt. Garibaldi in order to reduce uncertainty surrounding the frequency and style of volcanism, hazard mapping at Mt. Garibaldi and Mt. Cayley and publication of existing hazard analyses and mapping for Mt. Meager as a comprehensive hazard map, regular satellite-based ground deformation monitoring at all Very High to Moderate threat edifices, and, finally, installation of a landslide detection and alerting system at Mt. Meager.

Peach and nectarine production worldwide is increasing; however consumption is flat or declining because of the inconsistent eating quality experienced by consumers. The main factor for this inconsistent quality is mealiness or woolliness, a form of chilling injury that develops following shipping periods in the global fruit market today. Our research groups have devised various postharvest methods to prolong storage life, including controlled atmosphere and delayed storage; however, these treatments only delay mealiness. Mealiness texture results from disruption of the normal ripening process involving disassembly of cell wall material, and creates a soft fruit texture that is dry and grainy instead of juicy and smooth. Solving this problem is a prerequisite for increasing the demand for fresh peach and nectarine. Two approaches were used to reveal genes and their associated biochemical processes that can confer resistance to mealiness or wooliness. At the Volcani Center, Israel, a nectarine cultivar and the peach cultivar (isogenetic materials) from which the nectarine cultivar spontaneously arose, and at the Kearney Agricultural Center of UC Davis, USA, a peach population that segregates for quantitative resistance to mealiness was used for dissecting the genetic components of mealiness development. During our project we have conducted research integrating the information from phenotypic, biochemical and gene expression studies, proposed possible candidate genes and SNPs-QTLs mapping that are involved in reducing peach mealiness susceptibility. Numerous genes related to ethylene biosynthesis and its signal transduction, cell wall structure and metabolism, stress response, different transcription factor families were detected as being differentially accumulated in the cold-treated samples of these sensitive and less sensitive genotypes. The ability to produce ethylene and keep active genes involved in ethylene signaling, GTP-binding protein, EIN-3 binding protein and an ethylene receptor and activation of ethyleneresponsive fruit ripening genes during cold storage provided greater resistance to CI. Interestingly, in the functional category of genes differentially expressed at harvest, less chilling sensitive cultivar had more genes in categories related to antioxidant and heat sock proteins/chaperones that may help fruit to adapt to low temperature stress. The specific objectives of the proposed research were to: characterize the phenotypes and cell wall components of the two resistant systems in response to mealiness- inducing conditions; identify commonalities and specific differences in cell wall proteins and the transcriptome that are associated with low mealiness incidence; integrate the information from phenotypic, biochemical, and gene expression studies to identify candidate genes that are involved in reducing mealiness susceptibility; locate these genes in the Prunus genome; and associate the genes with genomic regions conferring quantitative genetic variation for mealiness resistance. By doing this we will locate genetic markers for mealiness development, essential tools for selection of mealiness resistant peach lines with improved fruit storability and quality. In our research, QTLs have been located in our peach SNPs map, and proposed candidate genes obtained from the integrated result of phenotypic, biochemical and gene expression analysis are being identified in our QTLs as an approach searching for consistent assistant markers for peach breeding programs.

A fundamental responsibility of the National Park Service (NPS) is to ensure that park resources are preserved, protected, and managed in consideration of the resources themselves and for the benefit and enjoyment by the public. Through the inventory, monitoring, and study of park resources, we gain a greater understanding of the scope, significance, distribution, and management issues associated with these resources and their use. This baseline of natural resource information is available to inform park managers, scientists, stakeholders, and the public about the conditions of these resources and the factors or activities that may threaten or influence their stability and preservation. There are several different categories of geologic or stratigraphic units (supergroup, group, formation, member, bed) that represent a hierarchical system of classification. The mapping of stratigraphic units involves the evaluation of lithologies, bedding properties, thickness, geographic distribution, and other factors. Mappable geologic units may be described and named through a rigorously defined process that is standardized and codified by the professional geologic community (North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature 2005). In most instances when a new geologic unit such as a formation is described and named in the scientific literature, a specific and well-exposed section or exposure area of the unit is designated as the type section or other category of stratotype (see “Definitions” below). The type section is an important reference exposure for a named geologic unit which presents a relatively complete and representative example for this unit. Geologic stratotypes are important both historically and scientifically, and should be available for other researchers to evaluate in the future.. The inventory of all geologic stratotypes throughout the 423 units of the NPS is an important effort in documenting these locations in order that NPS staff recognize and protect these areas for future studies. The focus adopted for completing the baseline inventories throughout the NPS was centered on the 32 inventory and monitoring networks (I&M) established during the late 1990s. The I&M networks are clusters of parks within a defined geographic area based on the ecoregions of North America (Fenneman 1946; Bailey 1976; Omernik 1987). These networks share similar physical resources (e.g., geology, hydrology, climate), biological resources (e.g., flora, fauna), and ecological characteristics. Specialists familiar with the resources and ecological parameters of the network, and associated parks, work with park staff to support network-level activities such as inventory, monitoring, research, and data management. Adopting a network-based approach to inventories worked well when the NPS undertook paleontological resource inventories for the 32 I&M networks. The planning team from the NPS Geologic Resources Division who proposed and designed this inventory selected the Greater Yellowstone Inventory & Monitoring Network (GRYN) as the pilot network for initiating this project. Through the research undertaken to identify the geologic stratotypes within the parks of the GRYN methodologies for data mining and reporting on these resources were established. Methodologies and reporting adopted for the GRYN have been used in the development of this report for the Mojave Desert Inventory & Monitoring Network (MOJN). The goal of this project is to consolidate information pertaining to geologic type sections that occur within NPS-administered areas, in order that this information is available throughout the NPS to inform park managers and to promote the preservation and protection of these important geologic landmarks and geologic heritage resources. The review of stratotype occurrences for the MOJN shows there are currently no designated stratotypes for Joshua Tree National Park (JOTR) or Manzanar National Historic Site (MANZ); Death Valley...
