The consensus view in the literature is that, according to Kant, definitions in philosophy are impossible. While this is true prior to the advent of transcendental philosophy, I argue that with Kant’s Copernican Turn definitions of some philosophical concepts, the categories become possible. Along the way I discuss issues like why Kant introduces the ‘Analytic of Concepts’ as an analysis of the understanding, how this faculty, as the faculty for judging, provides the principle for the complete exhibition of the categories, how the pure categories relate to the schematized categories, and how the latter can be used on empirical objects.

The article considers “female prose” as a phenomenon. Of particular interest is the work of the bright Russian writer Victoria Tokareva. Tokareva is interested in such moral categories as mental uneasiness, the need for self-expression, the fear of loneliness. These categories are never addressed by low-quality, purely entertaining writers, where the reader becomes an “imaginer” or “dreamer,” a passive consumer and observer. Whose work can be attributed to the galaxy of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, Tatyana Tolstoy, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, etc.

In my discussion of Bordo's paper I leave aside the particulars of her detailed critique of Grimshaw and the issue of the “maleness” of philosophy and focus instead on some questions raised by her analysis of heterogeneity and generality. I find this analysis very persuasive, particularly her counterarguments to the “theoretics of heterogeneity.” However, 1 am less persuaded by her concluding points and suggestions for future directions.

This paper considers the Kantian philosophical tradition in western language philosophy of the XXth century, describes the ways of its influence and argues the existence of the “Kantian language philosophy tradition” as a continuous stage to be a certain evolutionary line in the history of philosophy. By now one ignores the influence of Kantian philosophy upon “those not pee linguistic turn” and does not esteem I. Kant as a philosopher of language, nor counts his influence in this sphere. The mode of this influence is uncertain and represents various views from synthesis to direct evolution. To discover this issue the author of this paper tries to find a metaphysic core element in language ontology, inherited by the analytic philosophers from I. Kant’s writings; conducts a comparative research of the aforementioned authors’ papers, extracts derived from I. Kant core metaphysical aspect in language ontology and a textological analysis, historical reconstruction. The researchers ignore historical and ontological links between language philosophy, Kantian and the analytical tradition due to a philological development of academic linguistics in the late XIXth – XXth centuries. Following the Kantian tradition in philosophy theories of the analytic philosophers (particularly W. Qwine and P. Strawson) contain the metaphysical core in language ontology, primarily in its syncretic essence of logical, semantic and utterly linguistic categories (i. e. the scheme of concepts, sense, universals, etc.). Syncretism of logical and linguistic essence in terms is also typical for the Kantian philosophy and characterizes the Kantian philosophy to be a source for the linguistic one, and a fully expressed the “Kantian language philosophy tradition”.

The article deals with the analysis of existentials as anthropological categories in late Soviet philosophy. A number of key categories and authors who developed them are highlighted. It is shown that during the1970s and 1980s, Soviet philosophers autonomously studied the problem of understanding a person, which is called existential. Being isolated from Western schools of thought, Soviet philosophers followed an independent and original path in the analysis of existentials. Therefore, these texts have not lost their significance as examples of that independent philosophy, which is based on real spiritual and intellectual experience. The concepts of spiritual feelings by V.I. Shinkaruk, practices as a special form of communication by V.G. Tabachkovsky, the philosophy of “second birth” by M.K. Mamardashvili and the existential of spiritual death as interpreted by G.S. Batishchev represent original achievements of Soviet philosophy that have no direct equivalents in Western philosophy of the 20th century. They were based on a deep and specific spiritual experience of living in a secular culture. The considered range of anthropological categories (existentials), which were developed in late Soviet philosophy, allows us to conclude that the latter generally gravitated, on the one hand, towards existential problems as such and, on the other, towards a spontaneous revival of elements of Christian consciousness on the basis of a new spiritual and intellectual experience of the crisis of secular consciousness. Therefore, it can be said that it was during this period that the foundation and model for the subsequent development of the original Russian philosophy were established, which in the 21st century assumed more diverse and developed forms.

The authors give their interpretation of this problem in two aspects - philosophical and lexical with the involvement of a large amount of factual material, as well as identifying the role and significance of philosophical and worldview knowledge in the formation of a system of categories of English philosophy in the light of the formation of the principles of scientific knowledge and the genesis of scientific knowledge itself; interesting moments here are associated with an attempt to identify the specifics and national originality of the formation of the system of categories of English philosophical thought, the definition of its properties.

The topical issue of the relationship between civilization and society as basic concepts of social philosophy is discussed in the article. In modern literature, there are great disagreements and ambiguities here, due, first of all, to the broad interpretation of civilization by the majority of authors, the interpretation in many cases actually coinciding with the meaning of the concept of society. The article proposes a solution to the issue proceeding from a social-philosophical consideration of four different meanings of the word society: society in general, society as a specific historical type of society, a specific separate society (socior, in the terminology of Yu.I. Semenov) and humanity as an internally differentiated integrity, as a modern human society. One can assume that civilization acts as a characteristic of both the state and the process of development of society in each of its meanings, a characteristic in terms of the correspondence of a particular society to a sociological (stage-formation) project. By defining society as an integral social system, a sociological theory as a scientific one gives an answer to the question of what exists (what kind of community of people is in structure, functions, subjects and social relations), and with the help of the concept of civilization – how does this society really reproduce itself, how do regulatory mechanisms that determine the actions and deeds of people. Civilization deals with the present, with the activities of people who change this present, and society, in the philosophical sense, and not in the sociological one, is the desired future, those distant mountain peaks, that transcendental reality to which the acting person rushes. When it is said today that Russia is returning to itself, that it must make a civilizational choice, it is important to emphasize in every possible way that the choice of a civilizational identity, by definition, is unthinkable without a project. A sociological project as a scientific project is directed to the future, outlines the contours of the future, and therefore only project thinking is able to give an opportunity to make the right civilizational choice.

The concept of "practice" is an important category of Marxist philosophy. In the course of his revolutionary activities and theoretical research, Marx gradually discovered the fundamental role of "practice" in philosophy, and sublimated its connotation by liquidating his previous beliefs and elevating it to a philosophical ontology. By liquidating his former beliefs, he sublimated the connotation of the category of "practice" and elevated it to a philosophical ontology, basing himself on reality, summarizing history, and creating a new worldview, thus completing a great revolution in the history of philosophy.

- In this paper I explore the consistency of an idea of language structures as both universal in their nature and empirical in their genesis. To this aim, I assume the theory of the parts of speech as a case study. I proceed from a brief historical reconstruction of 20th-century theories of grammatical categories to an analysis of the semantics of the parts of speech, with particular emphasis on Ronald Langacker's philosophy of grammar. Finally I focus on the theory of prepositions in order to explore the relations between language and perception and the function of perceptual schemas at the basis of linguistic categories. Keywords: Linguistic universals, Parts of speech, Perceptual schemas, Cognitive linguistics, Prepositions, Philosophy of grammar.Parole chiave: Universali linguistici, Parti del discorso, Schemi percettivi, Linguistica cognitiva, Preposizioni, Filosofia della grammatica.

Abstract The article is an analysis of a chapter dealing with the Aristotelian categories in the so-called eighth book of Stromata by Clement of Alexandria, a collection of notes from a philosophical source (or sources) concerned with the theory of demonstration and related issues. Though seldom mentioned in contemporary scholarship, this short chapter is a valuable testimony of the reception of the Categories in the philosophy of the Imperial period and before the time of Alexander of Aphrodisias. After a brief survey of its contents, the article investigates parallels in philosophical literature and explores the function of the chapter within the larger context of Stromata VIII. In the final section the question of Clement's source is addressed. Drawing on earlier research concerning other parts of the eighth book, the article argues that in this case, too, Galen's lost writing on demonstration is a likely candidate.

Leibniz was the founder of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, outstanding mathematician and man of deep knowledge and broad views. He became one of the best experts in Chinese philosophy in Europe. It happened because he helped Christian missionaries, who were living in China, to interpret Chinese philosophical texts. But the question arises: can we say, that the ideas of neo-Confucianism to some extend influenced Leibniz’s philosophy? The article offers reasoning on this topic.

Verbs and nouns gear θ-dependencies, Case, agreement, or construal relations. Building on Chomsky’s 1974 decomposition of such categories into ±N, ±V features, by translating said features into ±1, ±i scalars that allow for the construction of a vector space, this paper studies the possibility of organizing said features into 2 × 2 square matrices. In the system proposed to explore “head-complement” relations, operating on nouns yields a measurable/observable (Hermitian matrix), which in turn limits other potential combinations with abstract lexical categories. Functional/grammatical categories in the system deploy the same features, albeit organized differently in the matrix diagonal and off-diagonal. The algebraic result is a group with well-defined mathematical properties, which properly includes the Pauli group of standard use in quantum computation. In the system, the presumed difference between categories and interactions—here, in a context of the head-complement sort—reduces to whether the magnitude of the matrix eigenvalue is 1 or not, in the latter instance inducing asymmetric interactions.

The article considers the philosophy of nature, presented in the lecture course The Woods (hyle) by Vladimir Bibikhin, in the context of posthumanist philosophy as well as contemporary criticism of the technical exploitation of nature. The Woods is analyzed as the implementation of the strategy of “return to nature”, which is outlined by Bibikhin in Philosophy and Technology as an alternative to the “labyrinth of technology” and “human imperialism”. That fact indicates the connection of The Woods with philosophy of technology. The main themes of the The Woods are highlighted, and the concepts of amechania and automaton are analyzed as the key ones for existential and theoretical dimensions of the course. These concepts, introduced in the course Reading Philosophy as human existentials, in the The Woods Bibikhin uses to describe the ontological categories of nature. Such a double meaning becomes possible due to Bibikhin’s following Heidegger’s idea of being-in-the-world, in which our existence and the world are understood through a hermeneutic circle. At the same time, the difference between Bibikhin’s approach and Heidegger’s one is examined. Furthermore, the author analyzed the similarities and differences between The Woods and philosophical posthumanism and then formulates the conceptual consequences of considering The Woods in the context of posthumanist studies.

The classical toolkit of philosophy includes, as a necessary basic “set”, certain general concepts, extremely abstract and deeply essential, which are called in Greek categories, and in Latin predicabiles, but more often — universals. Initially, Aristotle introduces the first ten such categories into his texts that further became canonic, in a small but very complex work of the same name. Up to the era of Modernity, his methodological arsenal served European philosophy with unfailing success. However, in the XVIII century, Immanuel Kant, sharply and definitely distinguishing rationality and reason unlike Aristotle, introduces the categories of logic not as abstractions, but as propositions systematically developed from a general principle: the ability, or faculty, of judgment. These approaches are very different: for example, in relation to concepts, — and Aristotle’s categories are precisely concepts, — the question of truth does not arise at all: it concerns only judgments. On the other hand, these approaches have something in common. Both philosophical systems in the field of gnoseology are formal-logical. Kant’s approach, dialectical in the study and explanation of the objective world, in terms of the theory of knowledge was not yet dialectical; or, it is believed rather, that this was negative-dialectical. In fact, this approach is intermediate, syntagmatic.

AbstractJohn Rawls based his theory of justice, in the work of that name, on a ‘Kantian interpretation’ of the status of human beings as ‘free and equal’ persons. In his subsequent, ‘political rather than metaphysical’ expositions of his theory, the conception of citizens of democracies as ‘free and equal’ persons retained its foundational role. But Rawls appealed only to Kant’s moral philosophy, never to Kant’s own political philosophy as expounded in his 1797 Doctrine of Right in theMetaphysics of Morals. I argue here that the structure of Kant’s political philosophy, with its categories of the innate right to freedom, private acquired right and public right, can clarify the relationship between Rawls’s two principles of justice and his scheme of basic liberties and primary goods.

Today, among specialists in social communications there is a lack of knowledge about the quantum-holistic categories of social communications, both the process of social and the process of social activity. The aim of our study was to identify and describe quantum-holistic categories of social communication processes. Through our study, we have chosen a transformed methodology of holism, which argues that the integrity of the world is a consequence of creative evolution. Such evolution is guided by the intangible and unknowable «integrity factor» (in Jan Smuts's terminology). The transformation of the ideas of holism is based on the basic principles of quantum mechanics, which we have adapted to the social sciences. We also used in the study methods of analysis and synthesis, deduction and induction, and the method of classification. The research methodology determined the differentiation of quantum-holistic categories of social communications into social and public; identification of three mandatory elements of the philosophy of knowledge of any subject of discussion, namely: identification, content, and functionality; analysis of known and little-known concepts of classification of philosophical categories in order to identify features that are consistent with our methodological conceptual concept of quantum-holistic categories of social communication processes; on the basis of the carried out analysis of isolation and nomination of ontological (metaphysical) and epistemological (epistemological) descriptive categories of processes o f social communications. In conclusion, the author argues that the identification of quantum-holistic categories of social communication processes should be carried out both from a social and social point of view. The author proposes to consider as descriptive quantum-holistic categories of social communication processes «quantum (portion of energy)», «Whole», «Information», «living / inanimate», «action / peace», «society / non-society». Keywords: social communications, philosophy of communication, categories, quantum, holism.

The deduction of the categories lies undoubtedly at the very heart of Kant's theoretical philosophy and, for this reason, it is one of items in the philosophical canon that is greatly discussed and least agreed upon. In the modern and contemporary Western philosophical tradition as well as in Kant’s literature, the loci classici for its consideration are the 1781 and 1787 editions of the Critique of pure reason. In this paper, I aim at presenting and discussing an argument that Kant advances in the Prolegomena and which is virtually ignored in the approach of the deduction of the categories. At first, an inquiry into the distinction between analytic and synthetic methods is carried out. After that, the difference between judgments of perception and judgments of experience is taken into account. Finally, the Prolegomena’s argument for the categories is brought into discussion. My aim is to reconstruct the basic steps and the fundamental idea of Kant’s transcendental deduction of categories as well as Hegel’s interpretation and reframing of Kant’s idea. Hegel’s reading is crucial for two reasons: first, for fixing the basic form of the Kantian argument and secondly, for understanding its metaphilosophical relevance. For Hegel, philosophical proof has a specific nature, which distinguishes it from scientific proof and brings it closer to a juridical one. In this perspective the transcendental deduction, which is universally considered one of the most difficult chapters in the history of philosophy, reveals itself as the genuine clarification of specifically philosophical proof. I first present the idea of Kant’s transcendental deduction in the Critique of Pure Reason as well as its Hegelian reading in the Science of Logic and reformulation as the very method of philosophy in the Philosophy of Right. I show what in the Kantian argumentation constituted the basis for Hegel’s own interpretation and transformation. In so doing, I highlight a ‘red thread’ between the two ideas of the transcendental deduction. I conclude by proposing a formal account of Kant’s and Hegel’s ideas and by summing up the main metaphilosophical insights we can gain from Kant’s idea and its Hegelian interpretation.
