This thesis aimed to identify applications of noble metals recovered from spent nuclear fuels such as 107Pd. To study the effect of the radiation three different applications were selected: heterogeneous catalysis, with the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CNA) as model reaction; photocatalysis, with the decolourisation of methyl orange (MO) as model reaction; and the regeneration of catalysts, deactivated with the synthesis of hydroxymethyl furfural. Protocols were developed for the synthesis of the catalysts and the performance testing in restricted nuclear environment, namely in glove box and for the implementation of the reactions in glove box and extractor column as appropriate.Regarding the results it was found that β-radiation did not show any effect on the hydrogenation of CNA independent of the applied reaction conditions. On the other hand, the decolourisation of MO was successfully activated by the β-radiation of the catalyst. A decrease in absorbance (at the isosbestic point) was observed and was correlated to the amount of the catalyst employed, evidencing the effect of the irradiation doses. Finally, the regeneration of the Pd-based catalyst showed promising results after γ-irradiation, notably with a partial recovery of the initial catalytic performance after -irradiation. Meanwhile, the Ru-based catalyst, although generally not performing well, showed increased activity compared to the fresh catalyst upon -irradiation

To study strain effects on catalytic properties for supported particles, core-shell Ni-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles have been prepared by chemical synthesis, characterized by multiple techniques (EDS, TEM, EXAFS, etc. ) and studied in buta-1,3-diene hydrogenation. The core-shell structure of Ni-Pd particles and the compressive stress induced on Pd surface atoms, due to its larger atomic radius compared to Ni, have been evidenced by EXAFS. On PdNi model catalysts, Pd activity is amplified. In our case, no amplification of the Pd activity is observed for a monolayer of strained Pd on Ni particles. As a consequence, compressive strain on Pd surface atoms of nanoparticles seems not to play a major role in the amplification of the activity for the buta-1,3-diene hydrogenation; surface reconstruction appearing on extended surfaces to relax the surface stress seems to be the key point

The excitation of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) of Gold NanoParticles (GNPs) can give many physical effects such as near-field enhancement, heat generation and hot electron injection, which have been investigated in many chemical transformations. In that context, the plasmonic photocatalysis based on electron transfer from GNP to a semi-conductor has been proposed. However, few studies are focused on the influence of LSPR features and the respective contribution of its local effects (thermal and electronic) on the photocatalytic activity. These issues are addressed herein through 3 catalytic reactions. First, the efficient and selective oxidation of glycerol in the presence of supported GNPs is demonstrated under laser irradiation and without any external source of heat, thanks to the local heat generation and hot electron transfer. The respective contributions of these effects is further investigated in plasmonic photocatalysis by following the degradation of Bisphenol-A. Our results show that GNP plays a major role through hot electron transfer but also as a nano-source of heat that accelerates the reaction and leads to a fast and total elimination of this endocrine disruptor. Finally, an optical set-up is developed for studying the plasmonic photocatalysis at the nanoscale. For this, a hybrid system of GNPs coupled to a TiO2 nanofilm is realized by laser nanostructuring. Our investigations show that photocatalytic activity is correlated to the LSPR (size and shape of GNPs, hot spots). These results open the way for exploiting valuable and industrial reactions under solar light

This thesis focuses on multi scale simulations heterogeneous catalysis reactions of polyols on platinum (111) in aqueous phase. This work is about lignocellulosic biomass valorisation. The reaction networks raising from these materials are extremely large and complex. Also, the properties of the molecules forming this biomass make aqueous conditions mandatory. Ab initio methods as we know them forbids us to treat entire networks at the finest calculation level, the computational cost would be way beyond feasibility. Changing the simulation scale can tackle this problem. Thus, we developed a group additivity model assessing for thermochemical properties of polyols at a platinum (111) surface under aqueous conditions, with a topology as the only input. This model was built upon a density functional theory set. Kinetics of reactions was also covered, and the difference in terms of impact was investigated between implicit and explicit micro solvation models, in order to predict reaction barriers. The two models might be used together in order to feed a micro kinetic simulation, allowing a drastic decrease of reaction networks complexity. Finally, the influence on reactivity and selectivity, of hydroxyl groups on butanediol isomers was investigated
