Today maps are prepared in Geographic Information Systems (GIS software) and based on data stored in a database. In the stage of the conceptual database design, the graphic editor of a database model is recommended. The structure of data is often under the influence of the cartographic requests. For example, new data may be added only for visualization purposes. All database structures for a base data and a cartographical data can be defined in a conceptual database model before creation of a physical database model. Database modelling is demonstrated in ArcGIS Diagrammer software in this article. Design of a cartographic database model for the book “Atlas of Election to the Olomouc Region Council” is used as an example. Moreover, steps of a model creation, detail structure and relationships in the model are also mentioned. The cartographical database model of the “Atlas of Election” illustrates cartographical influence to the database structure.

Abstract. The article describes the process of aggregation of media-based data about coronavirus pandemic in the Olomouc region, Czech Republic. Originally non-spatially located news from different sources and various platforms (government, social media, news portals) were automatically aggregated into a centralized database. The application “COVID-map” is an interactive web map solution which visualizes records from the database in a spatial way. COVID-map has been developed within Ad hoc online hackathon as an academic project at the Department of Geoinformatics, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic. Alongside spatially localized data, map application collects statistical data from official sources e.g. from the governmental crisis management office. Our approach focuses on cartographical aspects of COVID-map solution. It respects current trends in both development of cartographic oriented outputs and web-based interactive map application. It is fully responsive. Originally, nonspatial data were aggregated, verified, geo-located, and finally visualized in the map environment. The layout combines three main parts: interactive map with spatial data; information panel with updated statistical data; and a sidebar with a filterable list of verified and geo-located news. The main cartographic method used for the visualisation is the choropleth map. It shows the distribution of positively tested people per 10 000 inhabitants for each sub-region. In comparison with similar coronavirus visualisation made during the current pandemic, our solution respects fundamental cartographical rules.Following cartographical topics are discussed in the article: the correct choice of cartographic method and its implementation; determination of a colour scale; recalculation statistics data into relative units by choropleths map method; design of map symbols and legend; searching for a suitable visualization of spatial and non-spatial sources into map layout; discussion on the suitability of using a clustering method. The motivation for this project was both social responsibility and dissatisfaction with the wrong implementation of basic cartographic methods in a variety of alternative solutions. The impact was immediate. Within a few days after the launch, tens of thousands users per day visited the COVID-map. It has been published by regional and national media. The COVID-map solution could be considered as a suitable ad-hoc implementation of the correctly used cartographical method on the example of coronavirus pandemic. The application “COVID-map” is available online at URL: https://gis.upol.cz/covid/mapa/.

Abstract From their earliest contacts with Europeans, the Mughals sought to obtain maps, atlases, and globes. They were, however, concerned with cartography less as a scientific tool than as a means to convey messages of status and power. Both cartographically correct and cartographically manipulated globes feature prominently in the allegories of Emperor Jahāngīr. Emperor Shāh Jahān added another dimension: European cartographical devices were introduced into history painting, to structure the imperial landscape and to document the emperor’s conquests.

However, the unambiguous terminology, definitions, content and appearance specification have not been widely researched. The paper deals with the new definition of image map, its components delineation, and basic classification. The authors understand the image map as a special map portraying geographic space in a particular cartographical projection and map scale, where its content consists of two basic components – image and symbol components. Image component is represented by remote sensing image(s), while symbol component is represented by cartographical symbols. An image map has to have three essential attributes: cartographical projection, map scale and symbol component by means of map language. The authors also present aspects of topographic and thematic image maps.

The purpose of the article is ordering the use of the term “mapping” in the scientific field. The history of the issue and the situation with the consolidation of this term in the normative documents (GOST) is considered; a critical review of the definitions used in the cartographical reference and educational literature is given. The reasons for the errors in its use may be related to the linguistic features of the pair of terms “cartography” and “mapping”, and the specifics of cartographic terminology in general. It reflects the triple essence of cartography as a field of science, technology and production. The place of mapping in the system “creation – use of maps” is shown on the basis of the model-cognitive concept in relation to the branches of thematic cartography. The author substantiates the inadmissibility of using the term of “map-ping” to denote the scientific directions being borderland between cartography and various geographical and technical sciences. The definition of the term of “mapping” as a process of creating cartographical works is proposed.

Abstract The development of indoor navigation systems should utilize advanced teleinformation, geoinformation and cartographical knowledge. The authors analyzed available specifications of prototypes of indoor navigation systems and drew conclusions about how to enhance the use of cartographical methods in the whole process of designing a new system. The analysis proves that cartographical methodology is still very limited in the process of designing indoor navigation systems. Researchers focus mainly on improving the positioning accuracy, and they often neglect the issue of developing spatial databases and the rules of their effective visualization. The process of designing indoor navigation systems, just like in the case of outdoor navigation systems, consists of a number of tasks that can be supported by the theory and practice of cartography. This article presents the issues of determination of spatial database model appropriate for an indoor system, improvement of accuracy of positioning algorithms utilizing spatial data and methodology of generating graphical and voice directions for indoor navigation. In the authors’ opinion, the discussed cartographical methods and techniques may considerably enhance indoor navigation systems and accelerate their development. The fundamental knowledge of cartographical methods should be within the interest of designers of these systems. At present the first attempts in this field may be observed, although they are still not mature and complex

The philosophical and political aspects of Utopia have often shadowed the geographical and cartographical dimension of More’s work. Thus, I will try to shed light on this aspect of the book in order to lay emphasis on the links fostered between knowledge and space during the Renaissance. I shall try to show how More’s opusculum aureum, which is fraught with cartographical references, reifies what Germain Marc’hadour terms a “fictional archipelago” (“The Catalan World Atlas” (c. 1375) by Abraham Cresques ; Zuane Pizzigano’s portolano chart (1423); Martin Benhaim’s globe (1492); Martin Waldseemüller’s Cosmographiae Introductio (1507); Claudius Ptolemy’s Geographia (1513) ; Benedetto Bordone’s Isolario (1528) ; Diogo Ribeiro’s world map (1529) ; the Grand Insulaire et Pilotage (c.1586) by André Thevet). I will, therefore, uncover the narrative strategies used by Thomas More in a text which lies on a complex network of geographical and cartographical references. Finally, I will examine the way in which the frontispiece of the editio princeps of 1516, as well as the frontispiece of the third edition published by Froben at Basle in 1518, clearly highlight the geographical and cartographical aspect of More’s narrative.

3D maps are one of the most attractive cartographical products for map users. They can present the real environment in a photorealistic, readable way, keeping enough geo-spatial information for the needs of different users. Very often users don’t make a difference between 3D maps and 3D models of the real environment. The aim of this report is to clarify when we can speak of 3D maps and even to discuss the definition of a 3D map.The article considers the cartographical elements applied in 3D mapping which help a 3D model to become a 3D map: user requirements, map contents, symbol system, accuracy, scale, projections and generalization, levels of details. The new cartographical elements are added to improve 3D maps: virtual camera, shades, lights, animation. In conclusion, the author will explain when we can speak of a 3D model and when of a 3D map.

The multifacetous scientific activity of Victor B. Sochava has found reflection in the numerous contributions-monographs and cartographical works issued by him and his pupils during the 70–80s. Now they are represent a base for development of modern trends of thematic mapping including ecological ones. Ecological mapping involves the spatial reflection of various natural and technogenic structures and their relationships. The cartographical modelling of territory potential is referred to this set of problems. Modelling in this aspect represents the désintégration of complex natural systems through classification and formalization into simple inner elements. Concerning the resources we have to bear in mind renewed and interconnected components of nature (forest, soil, water). This problem is subdivided into a number of tasks, namely: 1. determination of functions and characters of interconnected resources; 2. modelling of environmental and row material ecological functions of resources; 3. subdivision of space into territorial ecosystems; 4. classification, formalization, normalization and construction of the resource potential of ecosystems. System transformation of basic theoretical principles, formulated by V. Sochava, enables ecological map to design and to model various states of resource potential of territory. Solving the problem of cartographic modelling of ecological-resource potential of territory one have to seek for universal territorial ecosystem. Such unit is a drainage basin. The privilege to deal with ecosystem of water-drainage basin lays in possibility of limit determination, analysis of interconnected resources (forest, soil, water) by means of objective models or «black box» model. The new ideas appear: concrete drainage basin represents a spatialnon renewal recourse: results of management may be estimated on the ecosystem exit. At the same time theoretical and practical experience in the mapping of all nature environment and economy components can be applied to the drainage basin ecosystems.

Cartographic methods have been used in toponymic research for many decades. The importance of these methods was noted by the founders of fundamental place-name study. This field keeps developing actively despite the considerable methodological complexity and labor intensity. Modern technologies in cartography make it possible to bring the scale and intensity of toponymic research to a new level, to solve problems that have long been identified in science. This further increases the relevance of toponymic mapping and the active introduction of other techniques into the practice of both local and regional toponymic research. The article presents the experience of creating regional toponymic maps and atlases, the general methodology and specific methodological developments of the authors in this field. The article provides examples of the latest practices of applying cartographic methods in domestic onomastics. The article presents the results of a poly-scale toponymic research in historical geography, based on the techniques of toponymic mapping in order to solve historic-geographical problems, and historic-cartographical analysis, aimed at solving toponymic problems. The geographical names of the Russian Plain and the Black Sea region serves as a rich factual data for the analysis of specific toponyms evolution. Historic-cartographical research provides invaluable data for place-name study, contributing to scientific advancement in related disciplines. Old maps serve as the most important sources of knowledge about toponymy and the formation of geographical representations in different eras. Place names are an integral part of the intangible cultural heritage, one of the most enduring and at the same time fragile. The modern desire to standardize toponymy at the national and international levels comes into conflict with the tasks of its preservation in the context of the protection of ethnocultural diversity.

Abstract. This article raises a few discussion topics concerning the cartographical learning for children and young adults as well as the training of Geography teachers in Brazil. It's necessary to clarify that one can't assing to teachers the full responsibility for the problems that the school and the cartography teaching are facing. We agree with Souza and Katuta (2001), who affirm there is a relevant and complex group of political, social and economic elements that can help explaining the educational situation Brazil is facing, especially in public schools. However, these elements end up being concealed along the education process. Therefore, we will present only the part of the scenario that includes the practices of Geography teachers, since they are responsible for forming the future generation of map-readers and producers. When dealing with the subject of teaching the teachers, we researched the literature that covers the teaching of Geography and Cartography at school and we applied it to national scope and to our own experience as teachers and researchers.

This article examines how maps in location-based mobile games are used as surfaces on which players can inscribe their whereabouts and other local information while being on the move. Using different examples of location-based games (LBGs) to which the map is central, our main argument is that such cartographical LBGs foreground the fluidity of mapping and emphasize the performative aspects of playing with maps. As such, we wish to move away from a conception of maps as representational texts and will show that it is far more productive to approach such cartographical games as processual and navigational practices. Instead of conceiving maps in such games as ‘mimetic interfaces’ (Juul, 2009), they should therefore be approached as what we will call navigational interfaces. To understand them as such, we will combine perspectives from game studies with non-representational understandings of maps as technological and spatial practices as developed in human geography and science and technology studies. By doing so, we wish to instigate a productive interdisciplinary debate about the relation between play and mapping as to deepen our understanding of LBGs as cultural cartographical practices.

This review traces the correspondence between the main purpose of Bloomsbury’s Series Theory in the New Humanities (i.e. the presentation of cartographical accounts of emerging critical theories), and Francesca Ferrando’s book, with its combination of genealogical-cartographic approach and critical response in contributing philosophical posthumanism. The review also highlights the value of Ferrando’s work, both on the theoretical-scientific-didactic level and on that of existential praxis. Through a critical recognition of the book’s thematic joints (defining philosophical posthumanism, determining what is meant by “post”, questioning whether humans have always been posthuman) and of the main contents, the review explores the work’s pioneering aspects, including its original structure, scientific rigor, and historical reconstruction through a critical mastery of sources, and praises Ferrando’s enthusiastic proposal of a posthumanism as the philosophy/praxis of our time.

The paper deals with cartographical and geoinformatical evaluation of Czech urban plans. The disparity between plan and map terms and how this disparity is perceived by cartographers and city planners is discussed. The processing of urban plans with GIS and CAD software is depicted and two groups of the most common mistakes made by processors of urban plans are demonstrated. The first group includes cartographical mistakes, the second one technical mistakes generated during digital processing. Explanation of the potential impact of these imperfections on urban plan users is emphasized and the ways how to eliminate these mistakes are delineated. The recent standards for urban planning in Czechia and their future changes are described together with web visualisation of urban plans.

This paper aims at examining whether grammatical errors produced by Broca’s aphasics are a consequence of a selective impairment of functional categories in three closely related Ibero-Romance languages — Catalan, Galician, and Spanish — for which almost no work had hitherto been done. In addition, a reinterpretation will be proposed under cartographical terms (Cinque 1999, 2002, 2006, Belletti 2004, Rizzi 2004) of previous structural neurolinguistic models of agrammatic production, more specifically the Tree-Pruning Hypothesis (Friedmann 1994, Friedmann & Grodzinsky 1997, and subsequent work). Cartography has been applied to the field of language variation. However, the present article constitute a completely new use. Since the Tree-Pruning Hypothesis was based on a model of monolithic nodes, the application of the cartographic tree structure provides us with further insights about the degree of structural preservation or damage of functional categories.

In 1932, the Tourism Syndicate of the French Protectorate government in Morocco published a guidebook for French tourists to follow the ‘ Route des Kasbas’ through southern Morocco. The trajectory described is still in many ways reproduced by contemporary guiding materials, delineating specific routes where this ‘heritage’ might be found in Morocco and what sorts of mobilities are necessary to seek it. Using these guiding resources from ‘the field’, along with our own ethnographic experiences as travelling researchers, we trace how colonial cartographical rationalities structured in this region along its ‘road’, through promotion by the French Protectorate government as a mobile site for tourism, and how that infrastructural and economic sedimentation persists in contemporary mobilities through it – including our own mobilities as tourism researchers. We question when and how it might be possible to escape this cartographic specificity for other spatialities of this road.

Abstract The Veronese astronomer Francesco Bianchini (1662–1729) was a prominent figure at the papal court in the pontificates of Clement XI (pp. 1700–1721), Innocent XII (pp. 1721–1724), and Benedict XIII (pp. 1724–1730). In his influential treatise Hesperi et Phosphori Nova Phaenomena sive Observationes circa Planetam Veneris, published in Rome in 1728, he presents the first cartographical depiction of Venus, containing the gores for a globe. Bianchini also produced at least four Venus globes of which two still exist as original models in Paris (BNF) and Bologna (Museo della Specola). With this set of globes, Bianchini provided the first identified three-dimensional model of a planet (if we exclude earlier cartographical examples of the Earth and the Moon). In this article we address the conceptual and technological changes permitting the emergence of planetary globes.

The scheme of societal and geographical research methodology on public transportation territorial organization has been worked out. It is viewed upon as a complex socio-economic phenomenon which includes four consecutive stages. It has been determined that when investigating the territorial organization of city public transportation both general and special scientific approaches and methods are used. At the preparatory phase the role and place of public transportation in municipal economy are determined, the nature of public transportation service is analyzed, satisfactoriness and insufficiency of its functions are estimated and, as a result, social services commissioning on the development of public transportation system is defined and the concept of its research is developed. The second phase is a conceptual and informational one. At this phase societal and geographical model of city public transportation is worked out, basic conceptual approaches of research are defined among which are systematic approach, structural analysis, cartographical method and method of historical analysis, etc. The development of such model is preceded by identification of informational basis, data collection and collation in order to accumulate theoretical developments on this issue and the analysis of previous researchers’ works. Literary sources, cartographical sources, statistical and regulatory documents are studied. The third phase is analytical and statistical one which is devoted to the analysis of public transportation structure organization in the city of Kyiv. At this phase the greatest numbers of scientific research methods are used, namely, the structured system analysis method, analytical and statistical method, graph theory method in combination with the method of historical and geographical sectioning, factor analysis, cartographical, comparative geographical, societal geographical zoning methods. Functional and sectoral structure, territorial structure and organizational and management structure in the city of Kyiv and their changes are studied at this stage. The concluding phase is reasoning for the priority areas of the city transportation utilities system development in the city of Kyiv. At this stage projection of city public transportation development is carried out, the areas of city public transportation system improvement in the city of Kyiv are defined. Systematic approach, main ideas of the structuralfunctional, informational and cartographical approaches have the invariable value in the study at this stage.

Abstract The literary works represent a genuine source for researching and understanding the geographical space. Most of the time, this space is perceived and figured in various ways by the different authors referring to it. When available, the best way to study these mental representations is by using maps created by the authors themselves. This article concentrates on Liviu Rebreanu’s novel “The Uprising” and on the map which helped him to better depict the plot and the characters. The cartographical representation was created by Liviu Rebreanu and was published together with other drafts from the author’s personal archive. The paper analyzes the map using cartographical, historical and literary sources with the aim of understanding how the author reshaped the real space to better suit his literary imagination. In the end, the study explains how these kind of maps could be interpreted using a geocritical approach.

Spatial Data Infrastructures have become a methodological and technological benchmark enabling distributed access to historical-cartographic archives. However, it is essential to offer enhanced virtual tools that imitate the current processes and methodologies that are carried out by librarians, historians and academics in the existing map libraries around the world. These virtual processes must be supported by a generic framework for managing, querying, and accessing distributed georeferenced resources and other content types such as scientific data or information. The authors have designed and developed support tools to provide enriched browsing, measurement and geometrical analysis capabilities, and dynamical querying methods, based on SDI foundations. The DIGMAP engine and the IBERCARTO collection enable access to georeferenced historical-cartographical archives. Based on lessons learned from the CartoVIRTUAL and DynCoopNet projects, a generic service architecture scheme is proposed. This way, it is possible to achieve the integration of virtual map rooms and SDI technologies bringing support to researchers within the historical and social domains.

Abstract. Probably by dint of seductive appearances and overflowing passion for cartography, by dint of instant accessibility to all kind of maps and any graphic representations commonly called ‘maps’ and finally by dint of confusions between what is an IMAGE and what is a DATA, everyone forgets that, at the dawn of a cartographic project, ‘THE MAP STILL DOESN’T EXIST’. For it to exist, a scope of collective work and essential skills are necessary. First of all, the aim of a mapping project must be identified. Its specifications, statement of requirements, its schedule of conditions must be sealed by a contract between an orderer and a cartographer. The objective of this presentation is to recall how a keyboard is neither a magic thought nor a magic wand. Clicking on it will never finalize our work without us, cartographers, but engages us to follow series of timeless execution process over the entire duration of the cartographic production, in anticipating each action. Our work consists in making every effort, by all the necessary technical and human means, to gather the knowledge of a subject (or several) to ‘Map-draw’ with the ultimate goal of returning this acquired knowledge to the readers. Their eye has to find at first glance the information sought. Indeed, the more beautiful and easier to grasp the map is, the more it will be consulted with pleasure.Through a range of cartographic memories, the following characteristic examples of out-of-standard cartographic productions will detail the pertinence of this meticulous cartographical articulation.

In the article the experience of using historical materials in landscape mapping of the earlier developed territories of the south of Eastern Siberia is presented. More than a hundred years ago, the Resettlement Department of the Main Department of land management and agriculture has conducted soil and botanical researches in the upper reaches of the Lena river for develop the tillage. The results of these researches were the basis for the reconstruction of the landscape structure of the territory of the key area of the Lena-Angara interfluves in the late XIX – early XX century. The resulting map and analysis of retrospective materials made it possible to reveal a high proportion of the transformed states of geosystems. The reason for this was frequent forest fires. The comparative analysis of the reconstructed map with the current state of the landscape structure showed the increase of the area of post-fire coniferous-small-leaved forests. This indicates a tendency of constant reduction of natural mountain-taiga cedar and larch forests.
