This mini thesis seeks to explore two legacies of apartheid: the insecurity of decent and available housing that has led to a housing crisis, and the insecurity of Coloured identity as caused by apartheid’s racial and identity politics and its aftermath in a democratic South Africa. Furthermore, it is an examination of identity and its relation to place, specifically Coloured identity in the place of Cape Town. It focuses the ripple effect of belonging, as this research starts with Cape Town then expands to further find cause for this growing cause of belonging by focusing on racism, the housing crisis, nation-building, globalisation, capitalism. Through interviews and archival research, I explore questions of belonging, identity, and its relation to the housing crisis in Cape Town. This is done through a case study of tensions that erupted in Siqalo, in Mitchell’s Plain on 1 May 2018. Siqalo is a land occupation of isiXhosa speakers in the apartheid-era ‘Coloured’ area of Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town. When Siqalo residents organised a protest around issues of electricity and housing they faced violent retaliation by neighbouring community and residents of Colorado, populated mainly by people classified as Coloured, with claims being made by an organisation called Gatvol Capetonians for Siqalo residents to return to Eastern Cape. I examine the role of identity in the creation of narratives of Cape Town and establish two narratives, one in which Cape Town is represented as a home for all and one in which it is not, this is done to show how belonging is made through identity and narrative and the effect that this creates. This comes to frame this mini-thesis as the question of a home is represented in the symbolic and physical sense and highlights the tension between Gatvol’s protest of Coloured belonging and Siqalo residents’ protest for decent housing. Chapter Two reflects on this through the use of interviews from both sides of the protest. This chapter is written as an imagined debate that not only reflects on critiques of oral history but ways of writing history experimentally or speculatively Through investigating the source of the tension from the Siqalo protest, I argue that desegregation was, in theory, one of the first nation-building projects in South Africa, and its failure has deepened apartheid and colonial forms of classification that divide people. The views of Mahmood Mamdani, while rarely applied to African people classified as Coloured, are very important, as his book, Citizen and Subject was a premise for this research as it highlighted the pitfalls and requirements of African countries after independence from colonialism. At the same time, the literature on Coloured identity rarely brings up the question whether Coloureds can and do practice racism on those classified as black or African and how these categorisations have persisted in the post-apartheid era. This research asks: to what extent do present conditions enable a predatory dynamic to claims of Coloured identity? Based off the predatory argument which focuses on intensified competition for scarce resources under globalisation put forward by Arjun Appadurai, I highlight the influence that contemporary globalisation has had on both the dynamics of Coloured identity and on the housing crisis in Cape Town. This mini thesis concludes by providing two alternatives as to how the question of race can be assessed in South Africa.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study gives us insight into the daily lives and battles for survival of poor women in an age of HIV/AIDS in rural areas of the Western Cape, South Africa. I set out to get an understanding of the shortcomings of the current interventions aimed at combating HIV and AIDS. Soon after I commenced my fieldwork I realised that it is the socio-economic circumstances of the people I encountered that was mostly responsible for their HIV positive status or the reason why they are living with HIV/AIDS rather than the choices they make. However, most of the interventions aimed at combating the global HIV/AIDS epidemic focuses on behavioural interventions or the provision of medical care. By entering the spheres in which women living with HIV/AIDS live their daily lives I aimed to get a better comprehension of the challenges they encounter and why the interventions that focus on behaviour and medical treatment fail to address the needs of these women. In doing so I learned about their struggles to merely stay alive and that protecting yourself against a disease like HIV/AIDS can appear as a luxury. A luxury you cannot afford when your only means of an income is your body which you need to barter in exchange for money or food and shelter. I learned about their powerlessness in protecting themselves against the disease and the loneliness they have to endure once they learn they are infected with the virus. In addition to this, it also came to my attention that their conditions of poverty are of such an extent that even ‘free’ medical treatment can sometimes be too expensive for them to afford because of hidden costs such as transport. At the end of my study it was my conclusion that we need to pay more attention to the root causes of the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in order to combat it successfully, also at the entry levels of the healthcare system.
Skinner, Kerry. "The quality of life of three men with autism spectrum disorders living in a group home: a case study." Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2192.
This thesis focused on three adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who are living in a group home in Cape Town. The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore and describe the three occupants' perceived quality of life and their experiences of living in the group home. The group home was established in 2005 as a pioneering project by Autism Western Cape, a regional non-profit organisation (NGO). It is designed for adults with high-functioning ASD who require low care. In this interpretative study, a multiple case study method of enquiry was used. The Personal Wellbeing Index – Intellectual Disability (PWI-ID), as developed by Cummins and Lau (2005), was used as the primary subjective outcome measure of quality of life. In addition, the study made use of participant observations undertaken during two semi-structured interviews with each participant and two focus group interviews. All three participants felt that they had enjoyed a higher level of quality of life, especially in the domain of 'personal relationships', since their arrival at the group home. However, they expressed a desire for more independence; a higher income; female companionship and better security at the home. These suggestions have been made available to the relevant sponsors of the housing project.

This dissertation is an ethnography of the figure of the moffie as a performance of same sex desire amongst gender non-conforming men, as it is celebrated in the 'coloured' ('coloured' is a constructed racial category, similar to 'white' and 'black' designated onto South Africans during the system of legislated racial segregation) townships of Cape Town. In this dissertation I demonstrate that the moffie is central to the lives of gender non-conforming men living in the 'coloured' townships of Cape Town. Through historical and contemporary ethnography, I show how moffie life is a representation of same sex desire amongst men that is highly visible. I reveal how moffie life is socially sanctioned through feminine self-styling, embodied through that of the gay hairdresser, annual gay beauty pageant competitions and Gay Pride events.

Breast cancer is a common cause of death among women worldwide. It has long been recognized as a major public health burden in high-income countries, however, the majority of cases are said to occur in low and middle-income countries, such as in South Africa. A breast cancer diagnosis and treatment heralds a series of frightening events and can be a traumatic experience. The manner in which women perceive and cope with their illness is predictive of emotional and physical health outcomes. It is thus imperative to explore the experiences of South African women, whose voices may have been silenced in the past. The purpose of my study was to explore the subjective lived experiences of women with early stage breast cancer undergoing treatment. The objectives of the study were to; explore the emotional experiences of women with early stage breast cancer undergoing treatment and secondly to explore how women perceive their bodies through their experience of early stage breast cancer while undergoing treatment. Phenomenology was used as the theoretical position conceptualising the study as well as the research design. This research study adopted a qualitative approach utilising in-depth face to face semi-structures interviews for collecting data. The participants were selected through purposive sampling and comprised six women aged between 30 and 40 who are undergoing treatment for early stage breast cancer. The data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Emotions experienced were characterised by the shock of the diagnosis due to factors such as lack of family history and age. Participants reported positive changes and viewpoints which they gained through their breast cancer journey. Emotions were heightened during treatment due to the physical change experienced and the effects this had on family members and the general public. Furthermore, results indicated that participants, even though they discovered a new found love for life and for their wellbeing, neglected their emotional needs in order to protect family members. An additional reason for this neglect centered on the lack of understanding other individuals may have regarding the experiences of participants. Recommendations involves the encouragement of accessing counselling services and that interventions tailored to the needs of each patient especially according to age. All ethical considerations as stipulated by the University of the Western Cape were adhered to.
Prest, C. B. (Colin B. ). "The institutionalisation of the aged : the importance of visitation, and the role of the specialised visitor." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49798.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Ageing is a fact of life. It often gives rise to unfortunate consequences. Physical infirmities; senile dementia; emotional disturbance. Indeed, the effects of the ageing process can be such as to render a person incapable of performing the ordinary and normal functions of life. In such a case, institutionalisation presents itself as a prospect to enable an aged person to cope with the ordinary day-to-day activities of living. The purpose of institutionalisation is to improve the quality of life of the elderly. In considering the process, a number of important facets need to be borne in mind. Firstly, the process must be seen in relation to the condition of the person being institutionalised. Secondly, the process must be seen as a matter of extraordinary change in the life of the aged person. This implies a detailed explanation and full disclosure of the process envisaged, and, if needs be, appropriate counselling of the person concerned. Thirdly, there must be sympathetic and sensitive assistance given to the aged person in adapting to a new situation. Fourthly, a continuing and intimate interest in, and concern for, the aged person on the part of the family must be accentuated and impressed. This gives rise to the importance of visitation on the part of the family. Its meaning and purpose must be understood. The need for meaningful visitation must be stressed, and the status of a respected member of the family must be emphasised. The aged person must never be cut-off, separated or neglected. Visits must not be a coincidental, haphazard and aimless occurrence. Visitation must always be directed at improving the quality of life of the aged person. The aged person, despite her advanced years and debilitated condition, remains a person with thoughts, feelings, emotions, difficulties and problems. She needs time and attention. The normal or regular pattern of visitation does not, by and large, accomplish these ends. Something more is required. Specialised visitation. This is something different from ordinary, normal, social visitation. It is more intense, more concentrated and more regular. It embodies consistent and continuous contract. It is directed at effectiveness. It is never haphazard or aimless and always has as its objective an improved quality of life for the aged. The specialised visitor and the resident come to know each other well; they come to trust each other, and they come to realise that the object of the visit is more than an exchange of frivolities. Specialised visitation manifests a concern for the aged; it offers them support, stability, certainty and security. This is so because the specialised visitor responds to an inner conviction, an infinite calling, and an earnest urging. It is not a task but a vocation. Many factors contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life of the elderly : three may be mentioned. Institutionalisation, visitation and the role undertaken by the specialised visitor.

The purpose of this study was to explore how people with self-administered peritoneal dialysis (PD) experience their daily life. The method was an interview study in which seven people who were treated with PD were interviewed using a semistructured interview guide. The material was analyzed with a manifest content analysis and resulted in three main categories: bodily changes, sensations of PD treatment and self-care. The results showed that PD had an effect in different levels in the informants’ daily lives. One important finding was how the informants perceived that the PD had led to certain bodily changes for example in terms of weight and appetite. The most striking finding, however, was that the PD led to a lack of freedom causing an undesirable passivity of the informants. It also showed that respondents who were waiting for kidney transplantation felt that this anticipation led to more restriction in daily life than PD did. The informants also described the positive aspects of PD treatment and stressed advantages such as that PD allowed autonomy and flexibility. This study gave a broad perspective of how people with PD experience their daily life and showed that not only the physical changes affected them but also led to feelings of restraint and passivity.

The practice has been adopted around the world as a participatory research method, as a pedagogical tool, as a community-based reflective arts practice and as medium for advocacy. It is associated with a loosely connected global movement linked by genealogy and a set of ethical commitments to the significance of all life stories and to the power of listening as a creative and political act.

This study records and interprets the history and meanings of Korean migration to South Africa, especially Cape Town, from 1990 to 2011. Korean immigrants in South Africa came to establish a better life. This lead to my central project question: What does a "better life" mean to Korean immigrants in South Africa? To answer this question, I have investigated Korean immigrants' motivations for migrating, family decision-making and their life experiences in South Africa.
Sithole, Sisanda. "Measuring quality of work life of municipal firefighters in the Western Cape, South Africa." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/3026.
Municipal firefighters face a number of risks and much stress at work. In the South African context, the quality of work life (QWL) is impacted considerably by high stress levels and work-related demands. Currently, firefighting organisations face serious challenges that hamper the QWL among municipal firefighters. These challenges include physical and mental challenges, and the element of work which negatively affects the job performance among the firefighters. The primary research objective has been to identify the key factors that impact on the QWL of municipal firefighters in the Western Cape, South Africa. In addition, this study explores a common approach for measuring the QWL and determining an effective way to maintain a better work life for the firefighters. The quantitative research method was employed. This study measured and analysed the key factors that had impacted on the QWL of municipal firefighters in the Western Cape, South Africa. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a group of 120 municipal firefighters from the Goodwood Fire Department. This study used the ethical principles of informed consent, the right to privacy and honesty, and confidentiality/anonymity in the research process. The quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings and results provide insight into and guidance to management and employees in a practical way to improve the QWL among municipal firefighters. The fire department should upgrade the QWL of its workers so as to hold them and get its very own vital needs. The fire department should develop and keep up QWL programmes. Support from ranking employees are basic to a useful QWL programme. In addition, unmistakable upper level management contribution is one of the critical factors in the procedure accomplishment.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The radio noise (RN) performance of an AC high voltage transmission line is a determining factor when accessing the reliability of the design. The conducted RN level across the terminals of a PLC receiver, used in the teleprotection system of the line, is of particular concern. In this dissertation, existing empirical and semi-analytical RN prediction methods are evaluated by comparing the conducted RN levels of four South African lines to the predicted levels. Existing RN measurement protocols are consolidated and a new RN measurement protocol is proposed for the comparison. A prediction methodology, based on the EdF, EPRI and IREQ semi-analytical methods, is formulated. The semi-analytical methods are not able to accurately predict the variation of the conducted RN with frequency in the PLC band, nor are they able to predict the RN performance of short lines. A wideband excitation function, which considers the statistical characteristics of the measured RN pulse train, is therefore proposed in this dissertation. Having investigated the extraction of this excitation function from ESKOM’s Megawatt Park corona cage, it is concluded that a small corona cage is required. The design of a small cage is presented and the extraction of the excitation function is described. Attention is given to assessing the effect of changes in space charge distributions. The effect of space charge collision with an insulated cage on the extracted pulse parameters is linear, provided space charge diffusion is negligible. The onset streamer, positive streamer and negative streamer corona modes were identified as the only modes with measurable RN in the frequency regime 150 kHz to 30 MHz. Formulas are derived for the prediction of the inception gradients for these modes. The RN performance of an ACSR Hare conductor is extracted from the small cage. The RN performance of the Acacia-Koeberg line is also approximated in the PLC band. The dissertation concludes that the proposed wideband excitation function method is capable of accurately predicting the variation of RN levels with frequency. It can also be used to predict the RN performance of short line sections, as well as the relationship between RMS, QP and average RN levels from a transmission line.

This research was envisioned to understand the evaluation of the Life Orientation (LO) Programme in Eastern Cape schools. The main motivation for the study was to evaluate the Life Orientation Programme in Eastern Cape schools through an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) into the experiences and perceptions of learners, educators, and departmental officials regarding the effectiveness of the LO Programme. This was because subject advisors are responsible for giving the required support and as well evaluate the subject teachers in schools. According to Sanders and Sullins (2006); Visser (2007) and Serrat (2008), school programmes have to undergo a review from time to time to ensure that they are still relevant, justifying the evaluation of this study. The reader is informed that, Life Orientation, was introduced as a compulsory subject offered to all learners from grade R to grade 12 and as an inter-disciplinary subject that draws on and integrates knowledge, values, skills, and processes embedded in various disciplines such as sociology, psychology, political science, human movement science, with the objective of making informed decisions and choices (Department of Education, 2003). Thus, Life Orientation Programme was to provide the necessary guidance for skills development, (Department of Education, 2005) This research observed the understanding that LO Programme has a focus on social development, health promotion, personal development, orientation to the world of work and the general physical advancement. Embedded in this study, was the need to understand whether personal biological inputs either individually or collectively, had any influence on the perception of learners, teachers and subject advisors towards the Life Orientation Programme or not. Thus, this study contributed towards moderating and remoulding the perception of learners towards LO Programmes by providing a clear understanding of the concepts of Life Orientation content, role of educators and the skills offered. The Literature review considered the following areas; Health Promotion, Social Development and Personal Development, Physical Development and Movement, Orientation to the world of work, showing to educators the existing differences of the educational needs and expectations of different learners (Engelbrecht & Green, 2009). These expectations may not be met if teachers pay too much attention to their own lives and values (Beyers & Hay, 2011). Some teachers experience a large measure of ambiguity regarding HIV/AIDS, they realize cognitively that they must support and nurture the HIV positive learner, but emotionally they remain cold (Bhana, Morrell, Epstein & Moletsane, 2006; Wood & Webb, 2008). iii This research has endeavoured to discuss in detail the issue of HIV, and the status disclosure of participants. One issue of necessity is the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, the use of the subject of the HIV/AIDS epidemic to professionally create some relevant awareness within the communities. The data used for evaluation of the research objectives were obtained from randomly selected participants by use of a closed-ended questionnaire instrument. The collected data were captured and analyzed by use of SPSS (Statistical Package for Service Solutions, Version 20). Among variables included were; the participant’s gender, age, educational category, residence and years of formal education and research questions. The analysis comprised of tables and charts whose parameters of analysis were percentages and frequencies. The interpretation for both quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed in line with the research objectives. The analysis produced outputs in the form of tables and charts, which comprised of frequencies, percentages, cumulative frequencies and cumulative percentages for descriptive analysis, whereas, test-statistics and p-values were used for significance level analysis for inferential scrutiny for existence of any association for selected pairs of variables while charts for association consisted of percentages and the variables under assessment. The analysis, for instance, found that more females (62.20%) participated in this study than did their male counterparts. Some of the reasons advanced were trifold; One, that the general population in the target areas constituted more women than men, and two, that men participation, were prone to unnecessary time-consuming arguments leading to a meagre male-participation. The researcher, an education professional, who deals with the learning curriculum on daily basis, and a practical university student counsellor knows that Physical Education is a compulsory component of the LO Curriculum. Each term, a learner has to complete physical activity assessments that count towards their overall LO mark. Though no record shows currently that grades eight and nine do not have formal physical education lessons, it was an exercise to be implemented in 2014. The results, however, were in line with Ombaba et al. (2014), who found that support from teachers in schools on the career guidance programme needed enhancement in order to make sure that the guidance services rendered are practical to students. The importance of Life Orientation Programme has been underscored, which requires the following recommendations for a sustainable improvement; adding to the course content, teachers to avoid name-calling in class, accommodation of everyone in career exhibitions without discrimination, improvement on presentation tasks, and others not stated here. iv It has come to be revealed, through this research, that the South African public educational system does not have adequate provision for vocational guidance or assessment of individual learners. This weakness results in high unnecessary costs for the country, the South African Businesses as well as social discontent and hardship. On the other hand, statement 4.3.1.16 showed that the average majority (51.8%) of the respondents claimed that Life Orientation motivates and guides them about basic life styles and careers. The researcher lauded this as a welcome discovery. According to the analysis of the data on statement 4.3.1.6, the majority of the respondents (65.3%) strongly agreed with the statement. This indicated that Life Orientation promotes healthy behaviour as expressed by the majority of the respondents. On the inferential analysis base, the researcher determined the existence of any relationship between independent variables and research statements in the questionnaire. As to whether Life Orientation promotes healthy behaviour based on one’s gender, this research revealed that the two variables were quite independent based on the obtained p-value of 0.765 as compared to any level of significance chosen from (0.05, 0.025, or 0.010). The null hypothesis could not be rejected. The conclusion was that gender had no influence on the promotion of healthy behaviour and so, practising healthy behaviour does not depend on gender but rather is an individual decision. Complementarily, results of another similar assessment between gender of respondent and respect for human rights as a prerequisite for moral development in a society indicated that there was no significant association between gender and the given dependent statement. This research further showed that age group of respondent and respecting human rights being a prerequisite for moral development in society were not significantly associated, since the observed p-value was greater than the level of significance. The researcher did not have sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis under this setup. On the other side of the analysis, age group of respondent and drugs giving one a true sense of security revealed a different observation. The observed p-value of 0.001 was far smaller than any selected level of significance. This resulted in a highly significant association demonstrating the fact that age group promoted the belief that drugs could give one a true sense of security. v A similar result showing a p-value of 0.022 for testing the association between educational category and Life Orientation promoting healthy behavior was highly significant. Key words: Apartheid government era, formative subjects, Life Orientation, Life Orientation Programme, level of significance, degree of association, general education and training (GET) band, further education and training (FET) band.
Matinka, Godfrey Wilton. "Child-hood experiences of foster care in the Overberg region of the Western Cape Province. An adult life history perspective." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6479.
The social welfare policy context changed dramatically from apartheid to post-apartheid in the South African transition to democracy. The new social developmental approach towards professional social work service delivery did not decrease the demand for foster care and thus the need for alternative child care placements continue to rise. Many children are still removed from their primary caregivers at a very young age and stay in foster care until they become adults. The goal of this research study was to explore , understand and describe the perceptions and experiences of adults regarding their lived experiences as foster children through the lens of Life Course Theory. Key objectives were to explore, understand and describe the foster care and childhood perceptions and experiences of participants through their journeys and transitions into adulthood; to explore, understand and describe how professional social work services are delivered in the field of foster care in the Overstrand Service Delivery Area and with these reflections, provide recommendations for improvements in foster care support services. In conducting this study, a qualitative single case design was implemented with the aim to contextualise the topic from a local, regional and social work perspective. A purposive sample of nine adult participants (four adult women and five adult men between the ages 25 and 35), across racial groups, i.e. young adults who entered alternative foster care as children, were used for the study. Data was collected in selected sub-areas of the Overstrand Municipal area, with a specific focus on the increasing foster care caseloads of registered non-profit child protection organisations (NPOs), particularly their satellite offices of Hermanus, Kleinmond, Gansbaai and the Stanford areas which form part of the Overberg region in the Western Cape. Data collection techniques consisted of document studies and semi-structured interviews, using a life-history approach for each individual partcipant. Data analysis was guided by the eight-step thematic analytical framework provided by Tesch. Findings concluded that social workers with the necessary resources generally need to respond in more appropriate ways to adequately prepare youth for the period of ‘transitioning’ out of foster care into independence and adulthood. The study documented evidence of how clients view the foster-care supervision services that were rendered. The study should thus guide and allow practitioner social workers to seriously review current social policies and practices regarding foster care. During the life course of ‘identity seeking’ individuals the struggles and challenges as told by the adult participants in this contextual study became better known and understood. As a practitioner and social work researcher, the researcher was also able to identify with the current practice dilemmas faced by designated child protection NPO organisations working under many constraints rendering foster-care services at local community and family level on behalf of the state. The research study should alert policy makers (including academic training instutitions), at local state and organizational levels, as well as individual social work professionals, of their constitutional, citizenship and ethical obligations to take cognisance, and great care of the significance of case file records that become historical evidence of the work and services rendered by professionals. The researcher is registered with the South African Council of Social Service Professions and is bound by the social work code of ethics which include research practice. Ethics considerations that were key to this study, e.g. obtaining informed consent, protecting the anonymity of the individual participants and participating organizations, and to ensure that both records and documents, and their identity and status are kept confidential.

Work life balance has become an increasing concern for most employees, organisations and industries, not only in South Africa but in many countries around the world. Work life balance has some implications for quality of life. Quality of life is becoming increasingly popular as many individuals are pursuing careers that make work life balance possible. However, due to an increase in the demand of work responsibilities as well as domestic duties, many struggle to find the balance which results in negative consequences for both organisations and individual workers. With a changing world and workforce, women are rapidly entering the workforce and challenging the status quo. Nonetheless, women's employment allows greater ability to negotiate for fairness in the marital relationship and to question the role of a woman in today's society.

This thesis is a critical edition of a section of the journals of the Reverend James Laing of the Glasgow Missionary Society. The first scholarly study of the Laing journals, this thesis seeks to contribute towards a new understanding of the early days of transcultural interchange on the Eastern Cape frontier. The only previous published work on Laing is William Govan's hagiographical Memorials of the Missionary Career of the Rev. James Laing, Missionary of the Free Church of Scotland in Kaffi'aria published in Glasgow by David Bryce and Son in 1875. This thesis attempts to make Laing's text as accessible to today's readers as possible. To this end, the text is a faithful transcription of the original, augmented by a contextual introduction, detailed footnotes and a comprehensive index. James Laing was born on 6 September 1803 and was raised in the Scottish Lowlands. He read classics, philosophy, theology and a range of medical subjects at Edinburgh University where he enrolled in 1822. The Glasgow Missionary Society assigned Laing to Burnshill Mission on the Eastern Cape frontier. He sailed for the Cape on 11 October 1830. From that day, he kept a journal almost without break, until a week before his death. Laing's journals comprise four bound volumes and more than two thousand pages in toto. These are housed in the Cory Library for Historical Research, Rhodes University as part of the Lovedale Institution Collection. Laing's journal constitutes a major element in the small body of extant Glasgow Missionary Society records. It was decided to edit, for this thesis, the first portion of the journals only.
Benjamin, Fatiema. "Exploring the lived experiences of individuals in a substance abuse treatment programme in Cape Town." University of the Western Cape, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/7084.
Substance use is a worldwide health concern that has received significant attention as it is often related to deleterious outcomes. Various treatment programmes have been made available to assist people and their families who misuse substances, to aid rehabilitation and equip people with the necessary tools with the aim of preventing possible relapse. The Western Cape Province has been identified as experiencing the highest increase of substance use, with Cape Town being disproportionately affected. Substance use treatment and prevention programmes are therefore an increasingly important means of addressing substance use and related harms. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals in relation to the treatment they received at a treatment facility in the Cape Town area. As such, the researcher made use of the phenomenological approach as a theoretical framework as it aims to describe the lived experiences of individuals in relation to a particular phenomenon. Furthermore, a qualitative methodological framework was utilised to explore the experiences of individuals who received substance use treatment. Ten participants were purposively selected from an outpatient substance use treatment facility in Cape Town. Focus group discussions were used to collect data and the data were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Findings suggest that there were various reasons participants sought treatment. This includes the challenges they experienced in both their personal and occupational lives as well as the realization of the negative effects substance use had on them physiologically. Findings also revealed that the environmental setting individuals were in fostered their treatment; the various aspects of the programme provided by the treatment facility had a significant contribution to their recovery and improved relationships with others; receiving support from family and friends were important in service providers treatment retention as well as individuals ability to identify the changes within themselves since receiving treatment. Overall, results indicate that the treatment programme helped participants in their recovery and enhanced personal relationships, self-perception as well as personal and occupational growth. Findings suggest that there are various reasons as to why people seek treatment and although this may differ, the treatment modality they were provided with contributed substantially to their recovery. Furthermore, this study will contribute to the literature and understanding the ways in which treatment fosters recovery, personal growth and relationships.

his dissertation presents a historical and anthropological study about the cooperativism and the strategies of struggle for the live well in the fishing community of Ribeira da Barca, in Santiago island, archipelago of Cape Verde. The general objective of the work is to comprehend the organization of this community in order to understand which live well they wish for. For this reason, this study brings to discussion the concept of coloniality of the power, among others, that transcends the particularities of the Portuguese historical colonialism and that does not disappear with the official decolonization. This concept is recurrent in studies about indigenous communities of the American continent and it consists of an attempt to explain the modernity as a process intrinsically connected to the colonial experience. At present, Cape Verde has been hostage of the world-system and the economic dependence from abroad, which forces the state to sign protocols and partnerships that aim to achieve the development of the country. Such partnerships do not always satisfy the needs of the majority of the national population, as verified in the fishing community of Ribeira da Barca, in Santiago island, specially because of the agreement on the fishing domain, signed between Cape Verde and the European Union. In this case, in particular, it was verified that the local population deals with many socio-economic difficulties and tries to survive through mutual help. In consequence, a form of sociability emerges marked by the solidarity and the search for living well, observed in the expression “vivi dreto”, typical from the Cape Verdean creole, which is related to the alternative of the idea of conventional development. Therefore, political answers are necessary to enable the culture of being in harmony, preferring this over the civilization of better living. It talks about building a solidary and sustainable society, considering that the live well indicates an ethic of sufficiency for the whole community not only for the individua
