This paper summarizes a prototype geographical image retrieval system that demonstrates how to integrate image processing and information analysis techniques to support large-scale content-based image retrieval. By using an image as its interface, the prototype system addresses a troublesome aspect of traditional retrieval models, which require users to have complete knowledge of the low-level features of an image. In addition we describe an experiment to validate the performance of this image retrieval system against that of human subjects in an effort to address the scarcity of research evaluating performance of an algorithm against that of human beings. The results of the experiment indicate that the system could do as well as human subjects in accomplishing the tasks of similarity analysis and image categorization. We also found that under some circumstances texture features of an image are insufficient to represent a geographic image. We believe, however, that our image retrieval system provides a promising approach to integrating image processing techniques and information retrieval algorithms.

Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) systems provide users with functionalities of representation, storage, organisation of and access to various types of electronic information resources based on their textual and geographic context. This thesis explores various aspects of the development, evaluation and application of GIR systems. The first study focuses upon the extraction and grounding of geographic information entities. My approach for this study consists of a hierarchical structure-based geographic relationship model that is used to describe connections between geographic information entities, and a supervised machine learning algorithm that is used to resolve ambiguities. The proposed approach has been evaluated on a toponym disambiguation task using a large collection of news articles. The second study details the development and validation of a GIR ranking mechanism. The proposed approach takes advantage of the power of the Genetic Programming (GP) paradigm with the aim of finding an optimal functional form that integrates both textual and geographic similarities between retrieved documents and a given user query. My approach has been validated by applying it to a large collection of geographic metadata documents. The third study addresses the problem of modelling the GIR retrieval process that takes into account both thematic and geographic criteria. Based on the Spreading Activation Network (SAN), the proposed model consists a two-layer associative network that is used to construct a structured search space; a constrained spreading activation algorithm that is used to retrieve and to rank relevant documents; and a geographic knowledge base that is used to provide necessary domain knowledge for network. The retrieval performance of my model has been evaluated using the GeoCLEF 2006 tasks. The fourth study discusses the publishing, browsing and navigation of geographic information on the World Wide Web. Key challenges in designing and implementing of a GIR user interface through which online content can be systematically organised based on their geospatial characteristics, and can be efficiently accessed and interrelated, are addressed. The effectiveness and the usefulness of the system are shown by applying it to a large collection of geo-tagged web pages.

For individuals requiring interactive access to online text, information storage and retrieval systems provide a way to retrieve desired documents and/or text passages. The CODER (COmposite Document Expert/effective/extended Retrieval) system is a testbed for determining how useful various artificial intelligence techniques are for increasing the effectiveness of information storage and retrieval systems. The system, designed previously, has three components: an analysis subsystem for analyzing and storing document contents, a central spine for manipulation and storage of world and domain knowledge, and a retrieval subsystem for matching user queries to relevant documents. This thesis discusses the implementation of the retrieval subsystem and portions of the spine and analysis subsystem. It illustrates that logic programming, specifically with the Prolog language, is suitable for development of an intelligent information retrieval system. Furthermore, it shows that system modularity provides a flexible research testbed, allowing many individuals to work on different parts of the system which may later be quickly integrated. The retrieval subsystem has been implemented in a modular fashion so that new approaches to information retrieval can be easily compared to more traditional ones. A powerful knowledge representation language, a comprehensive lexicon and individually tailored experts using standardized blackboard modules for communication and control allowed rapid prototyping, incremental development and ready adaptability to change. The system executes on a DEC VAX ll/785 running ULTRIXâ ¢, a variant of 4.2 BSD UNIX. It has been implemented as a set of MU-Prolog and C modules communicating through TCP/IP sockets.

O desenvolvimento de novos métodos experimentais e tecnologias de alto rendimento no campo biomédico despoletou um crescimento acelerado do volume de publicações científicas na área. Inúmeros repositórios estruturados para dados biológicos foram criados ao longo das últimas décadas, no entanto, os utilizadores estão cada vez mais a recorrer a sistemas de recuperação de informação, ou motores de busca, em detrimento dos primeiros. Motores de pesquisa apresentam-se mais fáceis de usar devido à sua flexibilidade e capacidade de interpretar os requisitos dos utilizadores, tipicamente expressos na forma de pesquisas compostas por algumas palavras. Sistemas de pesquisa tradicionais devolvem documentos completos, que geralmente requerem um grande esforço de leitura para encontrar a informação procurada, encontrando-se esta, em grande parte dos casos, descrita num trecho de texto composto por poucas frases. Além disso, estes sistemas falham frequentemente na tentativa de encontrar a informação pretendida porque, apesar de a pesquisa efectuada estar normalmente alinhada semanticamente com a linguagem usada nos documentos procurados, os termos usados são lexicalmente diferentes. Esta dissertação foca-se no desenvolvimento de técnicas de recuperação de informação baseadas em frases que, para uma dada pesquisa de um utilizador, permitam encontrar frases relevantes da literatura científica que respondam aos requisitos do utilizador. O trabalho desenvolvido apresenta-se em duas partes. Primeiro foi realizado trabalho de investigação exploratória para identificação de características de frases informativas em textos biomédicos. Para este propósito foi usado um método de aprendizagem automática. De seguida foi desenvolvido um sistema de pesquisa de frases informativas. Este sistema suporta pesquisas de texto livre e baseadas em conceitos, os resultados de pesquisa apresentam-se enriquecidos com anotações de conceitos relevantes e podem ser ordenados segundo várias estratégias de classificação.
Modern advances of experimental methods and high-throughput technology in the biomedical domain are causing a fast-paced, rising growth of the volume of published scientific literature in the field. While a myriad of structured data repositories for biological knowledge have been sprouting over the last decades, Information Retrieval (IR) systems are increasingly replacing them. IR systems are easier to use due to their flexibility and ability to interpret user needs in the form of queries, typically formed by a few words. Traditional document retrieval systems return entire documents, which may require a lot of subsequent reading to find the specific information sought, frequently contained in a small passage of only a few sentences. Additionally, IR often fails to find what is wanted because the words used in the query are lexically different, despite semantically aligned, from the words used in relevant sources. This thesis focuses on the development of sentence-based information retrieval approaches that, for a given user query, allow seeking relevant sentences from scientific literature that answer the user information need. The presented work is two-fold. First, exploratory research experiments were conducted for the identification of features of informative sentences from biomedical texts. A supervised machine learning method was used for this purpose. Second, an information retrieval system for informative sentences was developed. It supports free text and concept-based queries, search results are enriched with relevant concept annotations and sentences can be ranked using multiple configurable strategies.

The required union of strong computer power, ease of operation, and adaptability have until recently been outside the realm of most research laboratories. Previous systems, in addition to their high cost, are necessarily complex and require software experts in order to effect any changes that the end user might deem necessary. This study examines the Apple Macintosh computer program Hypercard as an interactive laboratory information system that is user-friendly, cost effective, and adaptable to the changing demands within a modern molecular or microbiology.

Current Web image search engines, such as Google or Bing Images, adopt a hybrid search approach in which a text-based query (e.g. "apple") is used to retrieve a set of relevant images, which are then refined by the user (e.g. by re-ranking the retrieved images based on similarity to a selected example). This approach makes it possible to use both text information (e.g. the initial query) and image features (e.g. as part of the refinement stage) to identify images which are relevant to the user. One limitation of these current systems is that text and image features are treated as independent components and are often used in a decoupled manner. This work proposes to develop an integrated hybrid search method which leverages the synergies between text and image features. Recently, there has been tremendous progress in the computer vision community in learning models of visual concepts from collections of example images. While impressive performance has been achieved on standardized data sets, scaling these methods so that they are capable of working at web scale remains a significant challenge. This work will develop approaches to visual modeling that can be scaled to address the task of retrieving billions of images on the Web. Specifically, we propose to address two research issues related to integrated text- and image-based retrieval. First, we will explore whether models of visual concepts which are learned from collections of web images can be utilized to improve the image ranking associated with a text-based query. Second, we will investigate the hypothesis that the click-patterns associated with standard web image search engines can be utilized to learn query-specific image similarity measures that support improved query-refinement performance. We will evaluate our research by constructing a prototype integrated hybrid retrieval system based on the data from 300K real-world image queries. We will conduct user-studies to evaluate the effectiveness of our learned similarity measures and quantify the benefit of our method in real world search tasks such as target search.

This thesis investigates the usage of an information retrieval system among résumés in Swedish and how the usage of morphological methods, such as lemmatization, affects the results. In order to investigate this, a small information retrieval system was built using lemmatization and compound splitting. This thesis also discusses how the relevance of a résumé can be decided and evaluates the information retrieval system in terms of precision, recall and ranking ability.  The results show that using morphological analysis had a positive effect in some cases, especially when the query contained more Swedish words than names of skills. In the cases where there were mostly technical skills in the query it proved to have a negative impact. Lemmatization was the method that had a small positive effect on ranking ability but the compound splitting had a negative impact regardless on the queries' features.
I detta examensarbete undersöks hur användning av morfologisk analys, så som lemmatisering, påverkar prestandan hos ett informationssökningssystem för CV:n på svenska. Det tas också upp hur relevans hos ett CV kan bedömas och informationssökningssystemet utvärderas utifrån precision och täckning men även ''discounted cumulative gain'' vilket är ett mått på rankningsförmåga. Resultaten visar att morfologisk analys ger positiva effekter i de fall då frågan till söksystemet innehåller många svenska ord. När frågan innehöll många namn på olika tekniker så visade det sig vara negativt att använda morfologi, framförallt när det gäller uppdelning av sammansatta ord. Lemmatisering var den metod som hade positiv effekt i vissa fall medan uppdelning av sammansatta ord endast hade en negativ effekt.

The ability to identify particular features and structures, such as faces or types of scenery in images, is a topic with many available applications and potential solutions. In this paper we discuss solar images and the results of our preliminary investigation of techniques that can be used to identify solar phenomena in images from the TRACE satellite. Being able to automatically identify various phenomena in solar images is of great interest for scientists studying phenomena on the sun. A set of characteristics that can be quickly extracted from solar images needs to be acquired. These characteristics are used to create classifiers for various phenomena contained in solar images. There are many obstacles that need to be overcome when extracting features and creating these classifiers. These include the inherent unbalanced data sets due to varying rates at which different phenomena appear and multiple phenomenon that could appear in each image. The classifiers that have been generated were used in the creation of an information retrieval system to make finding phenomenon solar images quick and easy.

Stock option trading has been very active since options were invented. Option analysis is very useful in helping investors decide investing strategies and predict the trend of the future stock movements. In this thesis, basic theory about stock option trading and some important approaches of option analysis such as option volume, open interest, put/call ratios and breakeven stock prices are discussed. A system called Stock Option Analyzer that can perform the option analysis based on these approaches is described in detail. The Stock Option Analyzer is able to automatically retrieve option quotes on any specified stock from the website Yahoo!Finance and present analysis results in the user's web browser. This analysis information is very useful for us to understand investors' opinions about the underlying stocks. The system is developed using JSP technology, utilizing JavaBeans, Java applets, and the help of the web server to generate web page contents dynamically.

The research set out with the broad objective of developing new tools to support Web information searching. A survey showed that a substantial number of interactive search tools were being developed but little work on how these new developments fitted into the general aim of helping people find information. Due to this it proved difficult to compare and analyse how tools help and affect users and where they belong in a general scheme of information search tools. A key reason for a lack of better information searching tools was identified in the ill-suited nature of existing information retrieval system models. The traditional information retrieval model is extended by synthesising work in information retrieval and information seeking research. The purpose of this new holistic search model is to assist information system practitioners in identifying, hypothesising, designing and evaluating Web information searching tools. Using the model, a term relevance feedback tool called 'Tag and Keyword' (TKy) was developed in a Web browser and it was hypothesised that it could improve query reformulation and reduce unnecessary browsing. The tool was laboratory experimented and quantitative analysis showed statistical significances in increased query reformulations and in reduced Web browsing (per query). Subjects were interviewed after the experiment and qualitative analysis revealed that they found the tool useful and saved time. Interestingly, exploratory analysis on collected data identified three different methods in which subjects had utilised the TKy tool. The research developed a holistic search model for Web searching and demonstrated that it can be used to hypothesise, design and evaluate information searching tools. Information system practitioners using it can better understand the context in which their search tools are developed and how these relate to users' search processes and other search tools.

All Naval dental treatment facilities (DTF) worldwide are required to submit monthly reports containing dental records of treatments provided and overall dental readiness to COMNAVMEDCOM, in Washington, D.C. These reporting requirements are standardized to meet not only the requirements of the Navy, but also as input to the DOD mandated Medical Expense and Performance System (MEPERS). At many commands, this data collection storage and reporting effort is currently performed manually, adding unnecessary additional administrative burden. This thesis develops a computerized database system providing increased accuracy and productivity, and capable of meeting the NAVMED reporting requirements. The Dental Information Retrieval System (DIRS) developed will record all treatments provided for each beneficiary category described in NAVMEDCOMINST 6600.1B, and will facilitate internal external daily, weekly, monthly and annual reporting requirements. An important design consideration is providing the DIRS developed with the requisite capabilities specified by the DTF's, without imposing additional hardware requirements. NAVDENCLINIC Long Beach, CA>, is the sponsoring activity for DIRS, and will serve as the test sited for system implementation. If the system is successful, Director of Dental Services, San Diego, CA>, has indicated interest in the system as a Navy-wide managerial tool.

This thesis encompasses a Welding Information System for Design, Operations, and Methods (WISDOM). In essence, the WISDOM project aimed at research and development of an innovative and comprehensive information collection on welding in close cooperation with industry utilizing modern micro-computer techniques of information review, retrieval, storage, updating, and transfer. Emphasis is placed on new and more efficient methods of knowledge communication, pursuing the idea of exploring knowledge (in contrast to rehearsing recipes). The development of this project concentrated on the following three main topics: 1. Background information on steel metallurgy and welding 2. Analysis and Design Methods for Welded Connections 3. Code Requirements of Welds Preliminary research on the WISDOM project involved communications with industry to determine primary objectives. The need for an information system on welding was unquestionably apparent. The knowledge base is supplemented with graphic images and analysis and design programs. It is hoped that the information in this system will be delivered to the engineer in an efficient and useful manner. The priority here is to raise welding awareness while promoting efficient welded design. In addition, we hope that the WISDOM system will close the ever widening gap between the design engineer and the fabricator. In the most general sense, the primary objective of the WISDOM project was to produce an integrated self-paced teaching tool for both engineering professional and student alike. The versatility of the system is maintained by presenting the information in modular form. Screen graphics oriented learning modules encourage the user to become more involved in the learning process than more conventional teaching methods allow. Analysis and design modules promote rapid and efficient connection design in a more consistent and professional manner. A smooth transition from the learning environment to engineering practice is envisioned by providing realistic design tools with a transparent background.

The widely used vector model maintains its popularity because of its simplicity, fast speed, and the appeal of using spatial proximity for semantic proximity. However, this model faces a disadvantage that is associated with the vagueness from keywords overlapping. Efforts have been made to improve the vector model. The research on improving document representation has been focused on four areas, namely, statistical co-occurrence of related items, forming term phrases, grouping of related words, and representing the content of documents. In this thesis, we propose the idea-indexing model to improve document representation for the filtering task in IR. The idea-indexing model matches document terms with the ideas they express and indexes the document with these ideas. This indexing scheme represents the document with its semantics instead of sets of independent terms. We show in this thesis that indexing with ideas leads to better performance.

With the increasing usage of storing textual data into relational databases, there is a demand for the databases to support keyword queries over textual data. Due to the normalization and the inherent connections among tuples in different tables, traditional IR-style ranking and query evaluation methods do not apply. A number of systems have been proposed to deal with this issue. In this thesis, I will give a detailed demonstration and description to our SPARK project. In the project, we study both the effectiveness and the efficiency issues of answering top-k keyword query on a relational database system. We propose a new ranking formula by adapting existing IR techniques on a natural notion of ???virtual document???. Compared with previous approaches, our new ranking method is simple yet effective, and agrees with human being???s perception better. We also study efficient query processing methods based on the new ranking method, and propose algorithms that have minimal accesses to the database. We have conducted extensive experiments on large-scale real databases using two popular RDBMSs. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvement to the alternative approaches in terms of both retrieval effectiveness and efficiency. We build a prototype of SPARK system on top of popular RDBMS based on these new techniques to satisfy different kinds of users and to support various query modes.

Information retrieval aims to extract from a large collection of data a subset of information that is relevant to user’s needs. In this study, we are interested in information retrieval in Arabic-Language text documents. We focus on the Arabic language, its morphological features that potentially impact the implementation and performance of an information retrieval system and its unique characters that are absent in the Latin alphabet and require specialized approaches. Specifically, we report on the design, implementation and evaluation of the search functionality using the Vector Space Model with several weighting schemes. Our implementation uses the ISRI stemming algorithms as the underlying stemming technique and the general Arabic stop word list for building inverted indices for Arabic-language documents. We evaluate our implementation on a corpus consisting of selected technical papers published in Arabic-language journals. We use the Open Journal Systems (OJS) from the Public Knowledge Project as a repository for the corpus used in the evaluation. We evaluate the performance of our implementation of the search using a classic recall/precision approach and compare it to one of the default multilingual search functions supported in the OJS. Our experimental analysis suggests that stemming is an effective technique for searches in Arabic-language texts that improves the quality of the information retrieval system.

This study outlines the derivation of a behavioural model intended to underpin thinking on questions concerning the design of information retrieval systems for academic social scientists. The historical background of information retrieval research is reviewed and the behavioural assumptions made in that research, characterised as the information retrieval model, are examined. Developments in the research tradition following from the early empirical tests on information retrieval systems are discussed, and problems experienced in the attempt to develop a coherent and practically useful research programme around the notion of relevance as a quantitative concept are analysed. A major alternative to work employing the information retrieval model has been the cognitive approach to information retrieval system design. In research so far undertaken in this approach the system has had to construct a cognitive model of the searcher's requirements in order for retrieval to take place. It is argued that the characteristics of social science information present particular difficulties for building such a model, and that the step of the system building a cognitive model of the searcher's requirements as a pre—requisite for retrieval is unnecessary. Instead, a behavioural approach to system design is recommended. The information seeking patterns of a variety of academic social scientists, derived from transcripts of interviews, were analysed and broken down into six characteristics, starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, and extracting. These characteristics seemed sufficient to exhaust the different generic features of the various patterns, and to provide a flexible behavioural model to underpin thinking about information retrieval system design. The features of an exploratory retrieval system for social scientists based on the characteristics of their information seeking patterns are outlined, the extent to which such features are available in existing systems, and the requirements for implementing the model on an operational system are considered. The argument of the study is that the behavioural approach, and the analysis of information seeking patterns into their characteristics, represents a coherent and practically useful basis for the design of exploratory information retrieval systems for academic social scientists.

This thesis describes a probabilistic model for optimum information retrieval in a distributed heterogeneous environment. The model assumes the collection of documents offered by the environment to be hierarchically partitioned into subcollections. Documents as well as subcollections have to be indexed. At this indexing methods using different indexing vocabularies can be employed. A query provided by a user is answered in terms of a ranked list of documents. The model determines a procedure for ranking the documents that stems from the Probability Ranking Principle: For each subcollection the subcollection´s elements are ranked; the resulting ranked lists are combined into a final ranked list of documents where the ordering is determined by the documents´ probabilities of being relevant with respect to the user´s query. Various probabilistic ranking methods may be involved in the distributed ranking process. The underlying data volume is arbitrarily scalable. A criterion for effectively limiting the ranking process to a subset of subcollections extends the model. The model´s applicability is experimentally confirmed. When exploiting the degrees of freedom provided by the model experiments showed evidence that the model even outperforms comparable models for the non-distributed case with respect to retrieval effectiveness. An architecture for a distributed information retrieval system is presented that realizes the probabilistic model. The system provides access to an arbitrary number of dynamic multimedia databases.

Executives in business are facing great competitive pressure in the modern commercial world, and must look to improved information systems as a means of surviving and prospering. They suffer from information starvation, and information overload simultaneously: Their systems do not cater adequately for their information needs. CHRONOS, an Executive Information System, was conceived to meet the executive's need for concise, appropriate information, for decision-making, planning and control in business. The system meets this need by implementing the concept that business variables, held as time series, are convenient and understandable objects for processing, graphing, and presenting numerically. The form of the information is a key factor in the effectiveness of an executive information system. An objective of CHRONOS was to achieve maximum functionality with minimum conceptual complexity for the user. This approach is intuitively appealing to senior executives, many of whom do not have the time nor the inclination to become highly proficient users of computer systems. CHRONOS was therefore designed to be flexible, extendible, and practical, to meet the needs of a user population with senior management backgrounds, with diverse information needs, presentation requirements and computer expertise. It has been implemented as a temporal database system, and the experience provides some insights into the problems developers of such system may encounter.

Search goals of users of information retrieval systems have commonly been assumed to be static and well-formed. However, a significant amount of goal redefinition is detected in the studies described. A pilot study examined user behaviour at a library OPAC, showing that search results would quite frequently induce users to reconsider and revise their search goals, sometimes following up with a new search based on this revision (labeled "strong" goal redefinition). The main analysis employed transaction logs from the OCLC FirstSearch service, investigating what factors, if any, might affect the amount of goal redefinition that takes place during a search session. To this end, ten hypotheses were proposed and considered. Within each search session, logged queries were coded according to their conceptual differences or similarities, in order for indices of strong goal redefinition to be constructed: a chronological content analysis was thus performed on the transaction logs. The indices of redefinition for search sessions on different FirstSearch databases were compared. It was found that different databases induced goal redefinition to different extents. Further analysis showed that the metadata displayed by a database appeared to affect the amount of goal redefinition, and that the presence of abstracts in results was a positive factor, as was the presence of descriptors and identifiers, perhaps because of the former's hyperlinking nature on the FirstSearch interface. On the other hand, no evidence was found to indicate that abstract length has much of an effect on goal redefinition, nor hit rate or levels of precision and recall. Of the two indices of redefinition that were produced, the "refined" index showed signs of greater precision. Implications of the findings are discussed. It is suggested that goal redefinition should be considered a positive result of system feedback, and that systems should readily allow users to follow up on redefined goals. Abstracts and summaries of documents should be presented to the user as frequently as possible, and hyperlinks from key terms in the metadata should also be created to assist evolving searches. The importance of how system feedback is encountered by the user is emphasized in a new model of information retrieval, which embraces the nonconscious as part of the "cognitive viewpoint," allowing for nonconscious information wants to enter into a user's consciousness through cues encountered during the scanning of search results, triggering a redefinition of search goal. This thesis paves the way for a considerable amount of potentially important research, including: further testing and development of the index of goal redefinition; deeper transaction log analyses, perhaps using screen recorders, examining semantic content and contextualizing at the level of the query; and further identification and analysis of the factors affecting goal redefinition, across different types of information retrieval system.
