Повний текст джерелаThe Mediterranean Sea is considered a "Hot Spot" region for future climate change and depending on the greenhouse emission scenario, the annual mean basin sea surface temperature (SST) is expected to increase from +1.5 °°C to +3 °°C at the end of the 21st century relative to present-day. This significant SST rise is likely to intensify episodes of extreme warm ocean temperatures in the basin, named as Marine heatwaves (MHWs), that are known to exert substantial pressure on marine ecosystems and related fisheries around the world. In this context, the main aim of this PhD work is to study the past variability and future evolution of MHWs in the Mediterranean Sea. We propose a detection method for long lasting and large-scale summer MHWs, using a local, climatological 99th percentile threshold, based on present-climate daily SST. MHW probability of occurrence and characteristics in terms of spatial variability and temporal evolution are then investigated, using additional integrated indicators (e.g. duration, intensity, spatial extension, severity) to describe past and future events. Within the PhD and depending on the applications, the detection method is applied to various datasets : In-situ observation at buoys, high-resolution satellite product, various high- resolution and fully-coupled Regional Climate System Models including the recently developed CNRM-RCSM6 and the multi-model (5), multi-scenario (3) Med-CORDEX ensemble. The detection method is first tested on the 2003 MHW in order to assess its sensitivity to various tuning parameters. We conclude that its characterization is partly sensitive to the algorithm setting. Hindcast and historical mode simulations show that models are able to capture well observed MHW characteristics. We then assess past surface MHW variability (1982-2017) and their underlying driving mechanisms using the CNRM-RCSM6 model. We examine their characteristics from surface to 55m depth, where most thermal stress-related mass mortalities of Mediterranean ecosystems have been observed in the past. The analysis indicates an increase in duration and intensity of surface events with time, while MHWs of 2003, 2012 and 2015 are identified as the most severe events of the period. In particular, an anomalous increase in shortwave radiation and a lower-than-normal vertical diffusion and latent heat loss appeared to be responsible for the development of the MHW 2003, with wind playing a key role in the intensity of temperature anomalies at the sea surface. Differences on the dominant forcing, however, are sometimes evident in the different subbasin.We finally use the Med-CORDEX RCSM ensemble to assess the future MHW evolution in the basin over 1976-2100. Our results suggest longer and more severe events with higher global-warming rates. By 2100 and under RCP8.5, simulations project at least one long- lasting MHW every year, up to 3 months longer, about 4 times more intense and 42 times more severe than present-day events. Their occurrence is expected between June-October affecting at peak the entire basin. Their evolution is found to mainly occur due to an increase in the mean SST but an increase in daily SST variability plays also a noticeable role. Up to mid-21st century MHW characteristics rise independently of the choice of the emission scenario, whose influence becomes more evident by the end of the period

Повний текст джерелаIn the context of global warming, extreme weather events such as heatwaves will be longer, more frequent and more intense. These heatwaves are amplified in cities by the urban heat island phenomenon and are likely to affect a majority of the world's population since more than half of the world's people live in urban areas, with an increase in recent decades. Furthermore, residential buildings in Europe are currently very poorly equipped with air conditioning systems and the social benefits of increasing the penetration rate of air conditioning systems are questionable. A majority of people are therefore likely to be vulnerable to future heat waves. This observation reveals the need to address the following problem: how to assess the performance of passive urban residential buildings during the heatwaves expected in the coming decades? This thesis consisted in defining the different elements of an evaluation protocol to answer this problem. First of all, relevant simulation tools were defined. These tools were compared with in-situ measurements carried out in Lyon during the summer of 2020. The comparison reveals that the tools accurately model the indoor thermal environments of passive urban residential buildings. A methodology was then developed to create heatwave meteorological data sets that are representative of the diversity of heatwaves that buildings could experience in the coming decades. Bibliographic research was carried out to identify relevant indicators for assessing the sensation of heat in the indoor environment of buildings. Finally, the evaluation protocol was tested for 4 case studies located in the city of Lyon. The results show that building performances are varied with respect to the diversity of future heatwaves. Some heatwaves are problematic as they lead to extreme thermal sensations inside the buildings. For other heatwaves, the buildings tested are still able to provide healthy indoor environments

Повний текст джерелаOver the 21st century, the mean increase in surface air temperatures is projected to be associated with an increase in warm temperature extremes and a decrease in the cold ones. Over the last decades, evidence already suggests these changes, as for example recurrent warm record-breaking temperatures or the increase in heatwave occurrence. We investigate the evolution of daily temperature extremes over the 20th and the 21st centuries in France and in Europe, their possible changes in frequency and intensity. We also focus on the mechanisms responsible for these projected climate extremes, as well as the maximum values of temperature extremes at the end of the century. First, we investigate the evolution of daily record-breaking temperatures in Europe based on the observations and an ensemble of climate models. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the theoretical evolution of the records in a stationary climate correctly reproduce the observed one, for both cold and warm records. From 1980, a shift from that theoretical evolution is observed, with an increase in the occurrence of warm records and a decrease in the occurrence of the cold ones. Climate models suggest an amplification of these changes over the century. At the end of the 21st century, the mean number of warm records shows a strong increase compared to the first decades of the observed period. The strongest increase in warm record-breaking temperatures is found in summer, and particularly over the Mediterranean edge. On the contrary, the occurrence of cold record-breaking temperatures is projected to strongly decrease, with almost no new records in the last decades of the century, for all seasons and over the entire European domain. Observed variations of daily record-breaking temperatures are still, at the beginning of the 21st century, consistent with internal climate variability only. Over the century, the anthropogenic influence emerge from these fluctuations in the summer record evolutions, around the 2030 and the 2020 for the warm and cold records respectively. By 2100, the mean changes in record occurrences cannot be explained by the internal climate variability solely, for all seasons and over the entire European domain. Then, we investigate future extreme temperatures at the end of the 21st century, as well as severe heatwaves leading to these extremes. Climate models analyses are associated with regional climate modeling and a French station-based dataset of observations. The summer 21st century evolution of the maximum values of daily warm record-breaking temperatures is first examined in the observations and the high resolution simulation of the regional model. By 2100, an increase of these values is projected, with maximum changes between +6.6°C and +9.9°C in summer among the French regions. These projections assessed from a regional model may underestimate the changes. The multi-model mean estimate of the maximum increase of these values is indeed around +11.8°C in summer over France. Finally, regional modeling experiments of severe heatwaves in the climate of the end of the 21st century in Europe are performed. These severe heatwaves are selected cases from a global climate model trajectory. The experiments results show the role of the soil-atmosphere interactions in the amplification of the extreme temperatures during such future severe warm events. The occurrence of the heatwave is first caused by the atmospheric circulation, but the temperature anomaly can then be amplified according to the soil moisture content before the event, and thus the climatic conditions of the preceding weeks and months

Повний текст джерелаIn a context defined as that of global warming, with fears that one summer out of two could be very similar to the 2003 European heat wave, the significant role played by droughts and land-atmosphere coupling in the enhanced and persistent high temperatures during heat-wave events has been highlighted by various studies. I have developed an original classification based on the spatial structures of the heat waves ocurring in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Classification are generally designed to classify numerous events, so we have had to adapt to classifying rare events, by introducing three criteria grounded on temperature and the spatio-temporal extension of the phenomena to be described. The classification has enabled us to sort out six different categories of heat wave. In course of the investigation, I then proceeded to focus on one of the categories, id est on Westen Europe heat wave. I carried out numerical sensitivity tests in order to analyse how the hydric deficit of soils contributes to amplifying heat waves and was able to bring out different behaviours. In the continental plains, the atmospheric boundary layer temperatures are largely controlled by local dry convection processes. In the mountainous and coastal areas, mesoscale circulations such as slope winds and sea breezes contribute to mitigating heat waves by allowing fresh and moist air to advect and precipitations to form. The effect of vegetation on heat waves was also examined. To do so, I have developed modelling tools which couple atmospheric dynamics with vegetative dynamics and thus present an innovative view on heatwave and drought conditioning processes in Western Europe. This modelling development is part of a larger project that aims at developing a model for regional climatic system and which has been undertaken at the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) as part of the MORCE-MED project. This question has so far been little addressed in the scientific literature. I have shown that the inclusion of an interactive vegetation into modelling enable to simulate the modifications of the phenological cycle that control plant growth and development as well as evapotranspiration. Used to analyse the heat waves of June and August 2003, I have been able to demonstrate that the interaction of vegetation had a mitigating effect on the June 2003 heat wave, while it had a reversed effect in August, id est that of reinforcing. Lastly, we have measured the effects of land cover change that would allow to mitigate the consequences of heat waves on humans. In a preliminary study, I replaced anthropized surfaces (mainly agricultural land) by forests and meadows. There again, the effects noted were more contrasted than expected and presented a mitigation of the heat in June and an increase in the temperatures in August, with a high spatial variability on a mesoscale

Study of such intense event is necessary because of its probable frequency increase in a climate changing context. MOZAIC dataset contribution with frequent vertical profiles at Frankfurt, Vienna and Paris allows to describe and quantify vertical extension of pollutant anomalies (ozone, carbon monoxide CO, nitrogen oxides) with regards to an 11-years establish climatology. Synoptic condition study of heat wave formation identifies favorable factor to pollution and establishes the prominence of the planetary boundary layer intense expansion. In a second part, lagrangian analysis is used in order to assess impact of primary emissions sources of CO at MOZAIC measurements : European and North American anthropic emissions, and Portuguese biomass fire emissions. In a third part, global chemistry-transport model GEOS-Chem allows to examine important process during the episode (dry deposition and biogenic emissions). Simulations are previously evaluate versus MOZAIC data and sensibility tests utilizing shows the importance of surface-vegetation-atmopshere process and the importance of Portugal fire plumes transport thanks to a daily emission calendar

The results show a biphasic endoderm specification, leading to extra‐embryonic and embryonic component respectively, as in amniote. The early step of neuroectoderm differentiation exhibits a pre‐neural state, with a molecular identity close to amniote. These works highlight also that early catshark embryo is a suitable model for quantification of signaling pathway activities. All these data suggest a deep unity of early development mechanisms in gnathostomes and shed in light the interest of catshark model to study their mode of evolution

Повний текст джерелаThe radiative conditions of strong heat in urban areas contribute to constitute the urban heat island effect. The latter is characterised by high night-time temperatures. Furthermore, these high temperatures have deadly consequences on the health during heat waves. This doctoral research aims at examining in Paris agglomeration the relationships between the extreme heats of 2003, the urban morphology and the mortality. A first aspect of this research deals about the relationship between the temperatures, the urban morphology and urban land use. Indeed, the urban morphology and the presence of green area1 have significant impacts on the variability of temperatures in urban areas. Our results show that surface temperatures are generally high-related to these variables. The second aspect of this research concerns the spatial distribution of mortality and excess mortality during the 2003 heat wave. We demonstrate that the strongest relationships are between mortality, excess mortality and night-time surface temperatures. However, the intensity of these relationships is globally quite average. This is why a comparison with sonne demographic, social and economic indicators is led. Each variable brings a part of answers about the spatial distribution of mortality and excess-mortality, but none provides a decisive explicative part. Taking these results into account, a hierarchical clustering is considered for a better understanding of the complexity of the relation between ail these indicators. We obtain four spatial clusters. These results suggest the role of social disparities on mortality and excess mortality during periods of heat waves

Повний текст джерелаHox and ParaHox genes encode homeodomain transcription factors involved in the development of eumetazoan. In this thesis, I characterized their genomic organization, their transcriptomic and their in situ expression in the dogfish, in order to better understand the evolution of these genes in gnathostomes. The first part presents the identification and genomic organization of HoxA, B, D genes and suggests that the C cluster was lost in the dogfish. Placed in a phylogenetic context, these results reveal a strong structural conservation of these genes in gnathostomes. In a second part, the analysis of five expression libraries, from sequences of 225 580 ESTs allowed us to characterize the transcription of the three Hox clusters. Our approach shows a strong complexity of transcription of these loci in the dogfish: many alternative transcripts, sharing of non-coding exon by several Hox genes, and for the first time in a vertebrate species, the presence of a chimeric transcript of two Hox genes (Hoxb9-Hoxb10). The identification of conserved non coding elements (CNEs) from several species has also allowed highlighting homologies position between very divergent non-coding exons, located in 5'UTR. The third and fourth parts of this work show the expression patterns of the 36Hox genes and the 6 ParaHox genes in the dogfish. Their transcription was determined along the anteroposterior axis during development and allowed us to identify areas of expression common to all gnathostomes and particularities of each lineage

Повний текст джерелаAn exceptional heat wave occurred during august 2003 in France, leading to more than 14,800 deaths estimated. We characterized all 'serious' adverse drug reactions (ADR) occurred in patients older than 70 years between 1st July and 31st August 2003, recorded in the French PharmacoVigilance Database, and related to excessive heat (n=68). The most frequently ADRs were metabolic. Drugs more frequently involved were diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, and antidepressants. During another summer with a heat wave in 2006, diuretics were more frequently involved, whereas the number of ADRs was similar. In 2007, we performed a multicentric case-control study in 3 university hospitals in France, to compare drugs taken by patients hospitalized for a 'serious' hyperthermia and/or dehydratation with controls. Cases took more drugs than controls (4. 3 vs 3. 9; p<0. 001), particularly neuroleptic drugs (3. 6% vs 0. 5%; p=0. 007), and presented more severe renal impairment. This pilot work could allow improving methodology of further studies on drugs during heat waves

Повний текст джерелаChondrichthyes are species of interest because of their phylogenetic position at the base of the Vertebrates. In this thesis, based on a small shark, the small spotted dogfish, the study of Nanos proteins, essential for the maintenance of the germ line in Osteichthyes, showed the presence of two Nanos1 proteins (1A and 1B) in Chondrichthyes, resulting from a gene duplication upstream of the Gnathostomata. Each paralog revealed specific expression profiles suggesting a gene specification. In addition, the spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) niche was better characterized and new pluripotency markers such as SSEA4 and Sox2 were detected in potential SSCs in this species. A primary culture of the germinative zone enriched in spermatogonia showed a heterogeneity of expression of the analysed SSC factors (GFRα1, SSEA4, POU2, Nanos1A, Nanos1B, c-Kit), suggesting heterogeneity of stem cells and / or progenitors. In order to validate the stemness potential of these cells in culture, a functional transplantation test was initiated. The development of this technology, for the first time in a Chondrichthyes, opens new perspectives in terms of preservation of these species. Finally, the search of potential therapeutic factors in the dogfish testis led to the identification of a peptide able to regulate blood glucose and insulin levels in mice presenting type 2 diabetes, but its mode of action remains to be explored. All the results confirm the interest of the small spotted dogfish for the evolutionary study of the germinal niche, essential to the maintenance of gametogenesis, and the search for molecules with therapeutic potential

Meteorological models predicted an increase in summer drought and higher air temperature with more frequent occurrence of extreme events like heat-waves and drought. Intensity and duration of these events may affect structure and functions of ecosystems and thereby the biodiversity and the functions of soil. The amendment of soils with composts could be an alternative to prevent and mitigate the effects of drought and heat waves in the Mediterranean agroecosystems. The objectives of this work were to characterize the effects of short and long-term high temperature and/or drought perturbation on soil Mediterranean microbial communities (structures and functions) and to study the impacts of compost amendment on short and long-term functional and taxonomic responses of microbial communities subjected to drought and high temperature. Our work allowed us to evaluate the influence of each factor (drought or high temperature) within the combined perturbation (drought and high temperature) on microbiological and physico-chemical soil properties. The effects of this combined perturbation induced similar or different responses of each of perturbations applied individually involving positive and negative effects on the microbial community. This work had shown threshold resistance duration inducing a change in taxonomic and functional microbial community structure after high temperature and drought perturbation. This abrupt shift in the community response did not allow resilience. Compost amendments improved the physico-chemical soil structure and stimulated indigenous soil microorganisms. However, it seemed that seasonal soil variations history rather than compost amendment influences soil microbial stability

Повний текст джерелаDue to its phylogenetic position at the base of the phylogenetic tree of Vertebrates, the dogfish is an emergent model to study fundamental biological process such as spermatogenesis and to identify bioactive peptides. During this work, we have shown that GFRα1and POU2/POU5F1 are conserved markers of undifferentiated spermatogonia from Chondrychtyes to Mammals whereas PLZF and c-KIT presented a less specific expression pattern and that HMGB2, HMGB3 and MCM6 may be new markers. Then, the development of a culture system of dogfish spermatogonia allowed us to show that GDNF function on self-renewal maintenance was also conserved. However, sequences study showed that the ARTN may replace the GDNF to induce self-renewal through GFRα1 in the dogfish. In parallel, the study of the action mode of three peptides isolated from dogfish testis and of two from the epigonal tissue showed antineoplastic effects by affecting various cellular processes. Thus, even if two peptides were further characterized, the three others seem to directly affect the cytoskeleton, which was followed by various cellular perturbations depending on the cell line and the peptide, such as cell-cycle slowing down, autophagy inhibition, necrosis or membrane destabilization. Complementary studies must be done to confirm the first target and identify which cytoskeleton element is involved. Those results suggest finally that the dogfish is a suitable model to study spermatogenesis evolution as well as to search bioactive peptides

Повний текст джерелаForecasting and assessing the risk of heat waves is a crucial public policy stake. Evaluate the probability of heat waves and their severity can be possible by knowing the temperature in continuous time. However, daily extremes (maxima and minima) might be the only available data. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is commonly used to model temperature dynamic. An estimation of the process parameters using only daily observed suprema of temperatures is proposed here. This new approach is based on a least square minimization using the cumulative distribution function of the supremum. Risk measures related to heat waves are then obtained numerically. In order to calculate explicitly those risk measures, it can be useful to have the joint law of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and its supremum. The study is _rst limited to the joint density / distribution of the endpoint and supremum of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This probability admits a density, solution of the Fokker-Planck equation and explicitly obtained as an expansion involving parabolic cylinder functions. The proof of the density expression relies on a decomposition on a Hilbert basis of the space via a spectral method. We also study the oscillating Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, which drift parameter is piecewise constant depending on the sign of the process. The Laplace transform of this process hitting time is determined and we also calculate the probability for the process to be positive on a fixed time

Повний текст джерелаLa canicule des pauvres (2009) recounts the daily life of twenty-six characters living at The Galant, a former brothel turned into an apartment building in Montreal’s Latin Quartier. This study shows interest in how the novel reveals a particular and complex image of the city. What can this representation of Montreal teach us about Quebec’s society ? What has become of urban civilization in the world of La canicule des pauvres ? How does DesRochers’s writing work with the usual representations of the city that come from the contemporary social imagination or the past literature ? Is there such a thing as postmodern Montreal ? In the spirit of sociocritical perspective, this memoir postulates that from the flow of the text we can understand the complex of meaning related to the representation of Montreal developed by the novel. By the images it gives, by the modes of enunciation and narration, by its way of uniting the effectiveness of brief chapters and extent of novelistic vision, by the multiple life stories described and their interlacing, the novel presents a city that has become foreign and opaque to its own residents. The study is divided into four parts which respectively examine the main features of the text layout, the narrative fragmentation, the recurring smog theme and the way The Galant’s residents interact with each other. In sum, the city appears paradoxical, alive indeed, but offering no vision of a coherent and liberating way of living together.
