AbstractThe paper unpacks the nuanced ethical potential in the metaphor of gardening that is depicted in Karel Čapek’s The Gardener’s Year, and the relevance of Čapek’s metaphor for understanding Voltaire’s famously ambiguous ending to Candide. Against more pessimistic or passive accounts of what Candide could have meant, the paper agrees with scholars who consider Candide’s maxim as meaning to engage in active, and communal practise of character development. By using Čapek’s much fuller account of the gardener in the practice of cultivation to fill in the gaps in Voltaire’s account, the paper shows that gardening is a rich metaphor of the virtuous person engaged in lifelong character cultivation.

The number of killer, neutral and sensitive yeasts was determined from strains isolated from substrates related to alcoholic fermentations. From 113 isolates, 24 showed killer activity against NCYC 1006 (standard sensitive strain), while 30 were sensitive to NCYC 738 (standard killer strain), and 59 had no reaction in assays at 25-27°C. Two wild yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one of Candida colliculosa were tested against 10 standard killer strains and one standard sensitive strain in a cell x cell and well-test assays at four different pHs. None of the isolates displayed strong killer activity or were sensitive to the standard strains. All belonged to the neutral type. It was concluded that although the number of killer strains was high, this character cannot be used to protect ethanol fermentation processes against yeast contaminants like those which form cell clusters.

Abstract This text describes the CANDIDE model from three critical points of view. First, it presents the structure of the model with the aid of a table of "supersectors" and a flow chart. The discussion of the linkages between these supersectors brings out the general equilibrium character of the model. The center section of the paper deals with the theoretical foundations of the behavioural equations. A statement of the equation specification in each sector of the model is followed by a brief evaluation. The authors confess to an eclectic attitude and stress the practical difficulties of making stylized theories bring order in variegated facts. Exogenous influences on the model are discussed as well. The same eclectic approach is evident in the third part of the text which treats of estimation and validation. A variety of tests and checks—some novel ones included—are applied in the process of developing the model. The authors conclude with the observation that recent tumultuous developments in the economy raise fundamental questions about the validity and usefulness of models like CANDIDE.

It is recognized the leading role of H. Pylori in the aetiology and pathogenesis of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, it is established morphological features of changes in the mucosa at mono-infection. However, lesions of the stomach may have mixed infectious character, changing the course of the main disease. The aim of the research is to investigate the statement of the mucous membrane in its contamination with H. Pylori, Fungi of the species Candida, cryptosporidium in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Biopsies of the mucous membrane of different stomach parts were studied, using conventional methods of dyeing with further evaluation of the results. Pathological changes in the stomach mucosa were depended on the localization of the process, the measure of contamination, and the presence of various life forms of pyloric Helicobacter whereas cryptosporidium and fungi of the species Candida (non-invasive form) did not influence essentially.

Abstract Current discourse on Latin imagery in rural Greek churches in Venetian Crete is habitually focused on images of St Francis. The explanations offered by scholars concerning his appearances in this context usually revolve around Francis’s perceived interconfessional appeal, but the introduction of another Latin saint from a different mendicant order into the monumental art of Byzantine character on Crete revises this picture significantly. The present article discusses images of Dominican saints found in Cretan churches of the Venetian period. With statutes promulgated in 1254 and 1256, the General Chapter of the Dominicans encouraged the veneration of Dominican saints through the dissemination of their images, and the representation of St Peter Martyr in his eponymous church in Candia clearly constitutes a visual testimony to this policy. At the same time, the portrait of St Peter Martyr in the Greek (Orthodox) church of St George in the village of Apostoloi in Pediada (in the wider Candia region) provides grounds for a discussion of cultural difference in Venetian Crete, as well as for the interaction between the Latin and Greek communities around the time of the revolt of St Titus. In my view, this representation, which is currently the only known example in a Greek church, should be re-examined in light of the prominent Venetian presence in the aforementioned region and the specificity of the local context.

In recent years, there has been observed a growing need for novel, multifunctional materials that would not only replace, but also heal the damaged tissues. In this paper, the titanium dioxide films manufactured by anodic oxidation method are investigated. The study of their structurization and antimicrobial properties of the coatings is presented. Samples anodized in water solutions of ethylene glycol exhibited various character -from structurized to porous ones. As the study revealed, all samples acted anti-adhesive in terms of bacterial (Escherichia coli) and fungal (Candida albicans) surface colonisation.

Class of 2013 Abstract
Specific Aims: The purpose of this study was to assess risk factors that are associated with inpatient charges and mortality rates with methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureu (MRSA), Aspergillus, and Candida in children with leukemia. The hypotheses is MRSA and opportunistic fungal infections are associated with higher inpatient charges and worse outcomes relative to those without. Children with leukemia are especially at risk due to underdeveloped and compromised immune systems. The rational is that identifying the risk factors that affect mortality and inpatient charges of these infections should add to the current knowledge of treating and preventing these infections in immune compromised patients. Methods: Retrospective cohort study using the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) KIDS 2009 database. Inclusion criteria was defined as 17 years of age or younger and a ICD-9 code for an active infection with MRSA, Aspergillus, or Candida. Regression analysis's were performed to identify factors that had an impact on mortality, length of stay, and direct patient charges. Main Results: Values that were significant (p≤0.05) for predicting an increase in mortality were Age (year), MRSA, Aspergillus, Candida, and Deyo-Charlson comorbidity scores. Significant predictors of increased Inpatient Charges (p≤0.05) was Age (year), MRSA, Aspergillus, Candida, Female Sex, Deyo-Charlson comorbidity scores, Urban Hospitals, and the Southern Region. Significant predictors of Increased Length of Stay (p≤0.05) MRSA, Aspergillus, Candida, Female Sex, Deyo-Charlson, Urban Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals, and the Southern Region. Conclusion: Although uncommon in leukemia cases involving pediatrics or young adults, statistically significant and large risks of higher mortality, length of stay, and inpatient charges were noted in cases involving MRSA, aspergillus, and candida. Increasing Deyo-Charlson comorbidities scores were also consistently important predictors for poor outcomes in these leukemia patients and, with certain outcomes, increasing age and female sex.

Ideas that are migrating from Canada are already guiding advocates who seek greater judicial and constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. However, there is a need for a conceptual framework through which to approach the lessons that can be learned from Canada in this area. Inspired by The Migration of Constitutional Ideas, an edited work by Sujit Choudhry, in this thesis I argue that by thinking about the migration and transplantation of foundational ideas and by differentiating between four ‘modes’ of migration (arguments of counsel, judicial determinations, academic critique and constitutional reform deliberations), it is possible to better understand some of the processes that are at play. In particular, by adopting the terminology of the ‘migration’ and ‘transplantation’ of ‘foundational’ ideas, I aim to demonstrate that it is dangerous to transplant foundational ideas, whether derived from the common law or constitutional law, without other ideas (particularly in relation to implications) also migrating. This thesis is a response to two distinct but related topics: ‘Topic 1 — The Potential for Judicial Recognition of Indigenous Self-Government Rights: The Migration of Foundational Ideas from Canada to Australia’ and ‘Topic 2 — Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the Race Power and an Anti-Discrimination Guarantee: Contemplating Canadian Approaches to Equality’. Through these two topics I examine two of the recognised modes of recognition — judicial and constitutional — and focus on two discrete types of recognition — self-government and non-discrimination — and the lessons that can be learned from Canada. In response to the first topic I consider the extent to which foundational ideas are migrating from Canada to Australia in the field of Indigenous self-government rights and whether these ideas could be used in Australian courts. In response to the second topic I consider the extent to which Canadian experiences may assist when exploring the potential implications of prohibiting discrimination in the Australian Constitution and when examining the various options that are available. As far as the migration of foundational ideas from Canada is concerned, in Topic 1 my starting point is to consider what could be learned from the Canadian jurisprudence in order to understand the ideas that have migrated or could potentially migrate to Australia. In contrast, in Topic 2 I start with an appraisal of the lack of recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution and the perceived problems with s 51(xxvi) (the ‘race power’), and in so doing I consider what benefits (modified) Canadian transplants may offer, if any.

Chicago, present day. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen), a graduate student researching urban legends, investigates a series of murders in the Cabrini-Green housing projects supposedly committed by a hook-handed killer called the Candyman. Residents of the projects believe the Candyman to be the vengeful spirit of a slave’s son who was lynched by a mob in 1890 after falling in love and fathering a child with a white landowner’s daughter. Aided by single mother Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) and a young boy called Jake (DeJuan Guy), Helen traces the Candyman’s killings to an empty apartment in Cabrini-Green, and is later attacked in a toilet block by a man with a hook. With Helen’s co-operation, the police apprehend the attacker, a local drug dealer (Terrence Riggins) who has adopted the Candyman persona in order to terrorise the residents, and the dealer is charged with the Cabrini-Green murders....

This chapter presents a textual analysis of Candyman (1992). The film at first appears to be a product of white liberal guilt at the plight of poor African-Americans; Helen Lyle lives in an expensive apartment originally built as another part of the projects but later sold by the housing authority as a going concern and turned into designer condos. Likewise, Helen is seen working on her research at the University, while black menial workers toil as cleaners in the background well aware of the legend of the Candyman. However, Bernard Rose consciously invokes American history and the oppression of ethnic minorities in his backstory for Tony Todd's Candyman character: the origin of the Candyman is based on a public lynching and plays on the fear of retribution for the historical ill-treatment of African-Americans. Candyman/Daniel Robitaille was the son of a slave, a free man who came into money, schooled, and brought up in polite society. His crime was that of miscegenation: he fell in love with a white girl, whom he made pregnant; his punishment was a horrible death.

Back in Venice, Girolamo secures housing in Ca’ Morosini, a Gothic palace on the Grand Canal not far from Ca’ Bembo at Santa Maria Nova. Gian Matteo successfully defends himself from charges of improperly spending state funds in Candia and is allowed to stand for election again. His wife Marcella dies in August 1555, a few days after Giulia gives birth to a daughter named after her grandmother. It is a time of droughts and famine in the countryside, celebrations in Venice, and periodic outbreaks of plague throughout the territory. In early 1556, Bona Sforza, Queen of Poland, is feted throughout the territory. The following year the city celebrates the first coronation of a Dogaressa in a century, with more festivities. Two sons, Giovanni and Alvise III, are born to Giulia in 1556 and 1557. Bishop Michele becomes majordomo of the household of Pope Pius IV in Rome and reluctantly engages in papal politics.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely accepted tool for the diagnosis of a variety of disease states. The presence of a metallic implant, such as a cardiac pacemaker (PM), or the use of conductive structures in interventional therapy, such as guide wires or catheters, are currently considered a strong contraindication to MRI (Kanal, Borgstede, Barkovich, Bell, Bradley, Etheridge, Felmlee, Froelich, Hayden, Kaminski, Lester, Scoumis, Zaremba, & Zinninger, 2002; Niehaus & Tebbenjohanns, 2001; Shellock & Crues, 2002). Potential effects of MRI on PMs’ implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICDs) include: force and torque effects on the PM (Luechinger, Duru, Scheidegger, Boesiger, & Candinas, 2001; Shellock, Tkach, Ruggieri, & Masaryk, 2003); undefined reed-switch state within the static magnetic field (Luechinger, Duru, Zeijlemaker, Scheidegger, Boesiger, & Candinas, 2002); potential risk of heart stimulation and inappropriate pacing (Erlebacher, Cahill, Pannizzo, & Knowles, 1986; Hayes, Holmes, & Gray, 1987); and heating effects at the lead tip (Achenbach, Moshage, Diem, Bieberle, Schibgilla, & Bachmann, 1997; Luechinger, Zeijlemaker, Pedersen, Mortensen, Falk, Duru, Candinas, & Boesiger, 2005; Sommer, Vahlhaus, Lauck, von Smekal, Reinke, Hofer, Block, Traber, Schneider, Gieseke, Jung, & Schild, 2000). In particular, most of the publications dealing with novel MRI techniques on patients with implanted linear conductive structures (Atalar, Kraitchman, Carkhuff, Lesho, Ocali, Solaiyappan, Guttman, & Charles, 1998; Baker, Tkach, Nyenhuis, Phillips, Shellock, Gonzalez-Martinez, & Rezai, 2004; Nitz, Oppelt, Renz, Manke, Lenhart, & Link, 2001) point out that the presence of these structures may produce an increase in power deposition around the wire or the catheter. Unfortunately, this increased local specific absorption rate (SAR) is potentially harmful to the patient, due to an excessive temperature increase which can bring living tissues to necrosis. The most direct way to get a measure of the SAR deposition along the wire is by using a temperature probe: the use of fluoroptic® thermometry to measure temperature has become “state-of-the-art,” and is the industry standard in this field (Shellock, 1992; Wickersheim et al., 1987). When the investigation involves small objects and large spatial temperature gradients, the measurement of the temperature increase and of the local SAR may become inaccurate, unless several precautions are taken. It seems obvious to: (1) evaluate the error associated with temperature increase and SAR measurements; (2) define a standard protocol for probe positioning, which minimizes the error associated with temperature measurement.

Faught’s reflections on his research in the Apalachee Bay/Big Bend areas of Florida provide candid and important insights into what is arguably the first real systematic archaeological study of offshore prehistoric sites. Faught’s systematic surveys, predicated on a theoretical model for site distributions, mimics, to an important degree, the then contemporaneous research conducted off the Texas and Louisiana shores by Sherwood Gagliano, Charles Pearson, et al. One salient difference in these studies was the funding: the Texas-Louisiana research was funded by federal dollars. The results of both studies set standards for offshore prehistoric research. An important historical difference lies in the fact that more recent research, detailed in later chapters of this volume, have built on Faught’s findings while no follow-up studies have occurred for the other seminal work of Gagliano, et al.

Glycerol is a by-product in biodiesel synthesis, and its current market condition allows the possibility to transform into value-added compounds. In this work, the enzymatic esterification between glycerol and carboxylic acids of different molar weights was studied to obtain glycerides of industrial relevance. Therefore, eight different carboxylic acids were evaluated: formic, acetic, levulinic, caprylic, capric, lauric, stearic, and oleic. Immobilized lipase from Candida Antarctica was employed as a catalyst. Solvent-free reactions were carried out at 65 °C, 450 rpm, at a molar ratio of glycerol: carboxylic acid of 1:1 and a 1,6% enzyme concentration (based on reagents weight). Conversion of carboxylic acids was followed with time by titration. Under these conditions, acids from octanoic to oleic, which initially formed biphasic systems with glycerol, showed high conversions (68%-80%) and initial reaction rates in the same magnitude order. On the other hand, no enzymatic catalysis was observed with formic, acetic, and levulinic acids. Formic acid exhibited a higher rate and 58% of conversion without catalyst. However, for acetic and levulinic acids, conversion was low in uncatalyzed reactions. Then, for these acids, toluene was added as a reaction solvent. As a result, conversions and initial rates increased for these lighter acids, indicating the need for a non-polar media or a biphasic character to activate the enzyme.

Washington State began legal cannabis retail sales in 2014. Legalization of adult use cannabis and retail sales may result in more cannabis products in homes and opportunities for accidental exposures among young children. Consumption of cannabis by young children can result in significant adverse health effects. This study examined details of cannabis exposure events involving children under age 12 that were reported to the Washington State Poison Center (WAPC) during January – December 2016. Redacted charts were obtained from the WAPC “Toxicall” database. 50 eligible events were identified. Structured data were used to describe child age and gender and to obtain information about the involved products, route of administration, exposure setting, and clinical effects. Additional information about the exposure event was available in case notes; qualitative methods were used to develop themes and categorize the cases. Most exposure events (62%) were for children ages 0-2, and 26% were for ages 3-5. None of the exposures were reported as intentional. Of those where the source of the product could be determined (N=29) either a parent (n=20, 69%) or grandparent (n=6, 21%) was the most common source. Nearly all (94%) exposures occurred at the patient’s home and involved a single substance (90%). Of those that noted the type (N=13), 85% indicated that the cannabis was obtained for medical purposes. Most exposures were by ingestion (86%), and edibles were the most often reported form (52% of 41 cases with product specified). Nearly all edibles were brownies, cookies, and candies (96%). Baked goods were reported to be both homemade and purchased. Three cases were exposures to cannabidiol (CBD) among children being treated for seizures by their parents: one was the result of a therapeutic error, one an adverse reaction, and one an unintentional exposure. A single child was reported as exposed through breastmilk. Of those with known medical outcomes (N=33), nearly all caused no or minor clinical effects (78%), and nearly all had symptoms for less than 24 hours, most commonly lethargy and drowsiness (50%), but five children were hospitalized for non-critical care and one child with a history of seizures, who was given CBD oil containing THC, required intensive care and intubation. Risk for accidental exposures to cannabis among young children may be increasing as legal cannabis markets become more common. Although most exposures do not cause long-lasting harms, some children can experience significant harm requiring medical intervention. Caregivers of young children are advised to safely store cannabis products in the home so that they are out of reach of children, and to use caution and consult with a healthcare provider about use of cannabis products for medical treatment of a child or adult use while breastfeeding. Clinicians may play a role by screening for household cannabis use among parents and other caregivers, and advising about safe home practices. Continued regulatory approaches to limit exposure, such as limits on THC potency and single-serving packaging designs, may also be useful.
