A classical result due to M. Eidelheit and B. Yood states that the standard algebra norm on the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Banach space is minimal, in the sense that the norm must be less than a multiple of any other submultiplicative norm on the same algebra. This de nition does not assume that the arbitrary algebra norm is complete. In cases when the standard algebra norm is, in addition, maximal, it is therefore unique up to equivalence. More recently, M. Meyer showed that the Calkin algebras of a very restricted class of Banach spaces also have unique algebra norms. We generalise the Eidelheit-Yood method of proof, to show that the conventional quotient norm on a larger class of Calkin algebras is minimal. Since maximality of the norm is a presumed property for the class, the norm is also unique. We thus extend the result of Meyer. In particular, we establish that the Calkin algebras of canonical Banach spaces such as James' space and Tsirelson's space have unique algebra norms, without assuming completeness. We also prove uniqueness of norm for quotients of the algebras of operators on classical non-separable spaces, the closed ideals of which were previously studied by M. Daws. One aspect of the Eidelheit-Yood method is a dependence on the uniform boundedness principle. As a component of our generalisation, we prove an analogue of that principle which applies to Calkin algebra elements rather than bounded linear operators. In order to translate the uniform boundedness principle into this new setting, we take the perspective that non-compact operators map certain wellseparated sequences to other well-separated sequences. We analyse the limiting separation of such sequences, using these values to measure the non-compactness of operators and de ne the requisite notion of a bounded set of non-compact operators. In the cases when the underlying Banach space has a Schauder basis, we are able to restrict attention to seminormalised block basic sequences. As a consequence, our main uniqueness of norm result for Calkin algebras relies on the existence of bounded mappings between, and projections onto, the spans of block basic sequences in the relevant Banach spaces.

The best way to understand Bazin’s film theory is to pay attention to art, science, and religion, since spectatorship depends on perception, cognition, and hallucination. By arguing that this dissident Catholic’s worldview is anti-anthropocentric, Angela Dalle Vacche concludes that cinema recapitulates the history of evolution and technology inside our consciousness, so that we may better understand how we overlap with, but also differ from, animals, plants, objects, and machines. Whereas in “Art,” the author explains the difference between painting as a static object and the moving image as an event unfolding in time, in “Science,” she discusses Bazin’s dislike of classical geometry and Platonic algebra, his fascination with biology and modern calculus to underline his holistic Darwinism, and his anti-Euclidean mathematics of motion and contingency. Comparable to a religious practice, Bazin’s cinema is the only collective ritual of the twentieth century capable of fostering an emotional community by calling on critical self-interrogation and ethical awareness. Especially keen on Italian neorealism, Bazin argues that this sensibility thrives on beings and things displacing themselves in such a way as to turn the Other into a Neighbor. Bazin’s film theory acknowledges the equalizing impact of the camera lens, which is analogous to, but also different from, the human eye. In the cinema, two different kinds of eyes coexist: one is mechanical and objective, the other is human and subjective. By refusing to reshape the world according to an a priori thesis, Bazin’s idea of an anti-anthropocentric cinema seeks surprise, dialogue, risk, and experiment.

This chapter explains how symbols, by providing a blank background on which we may contemplate unadulterated meaning, help us see and distinguish what is essential. It first considers the claim advanced by the German naturalist Gotthilf von Schubert in the nineteenth century that we dream in a traumbildsprache (“dream visual language”), “a higher kind of algebra,” not in a verbal language. It then discusses the study of dreams by Calvin Hall and Vernon Nordby; Christopher Chabris's and Daniel Simons's “Invisible Gorilla” experiment; and experiments undertaken by Stanislas Dehaene to investigate differences in brain activity between contemplations of numbers and words. It also revisits the study done by Anthony Jansen, Kim Marriott, and Greg Yelland of Monash University to find out how experienced users of mathematics comprehend algebraic expressions. Finally, it suggests how particular notational configurations may help us recognize structure in mathematical expressions and process equations.

This chapter examines the origins and evolution of settler identity in colonial Algeria. Dealing with the years between 1830 and 1939, it examines the process by which Europeans of diverse origins gradually merged into a distinct people, the French of Algeria. The settlers defined themselves in opposition to the native Arabs and Berbers. The Jews of Algeria were in-between: non-Muslims caught between the Christian and Muslim inhabitants of the colony. Even before World War II, native intellectuals and religious leaders were calling for liberal reforms. Social conditions (residential segregation, inequality in education, linguistic and religious differences, and avoidance of mixed marriages) kept colonizer and colonized apart. The Europeans of Algeria considered themselves French, but their identification with the metropole remained contingent.

The year 2011 will be one of the most memorable in the modern Arab history because of the wave of revolutions which led to the overthrow of long ruling autocrats in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya. Algeria is so far the only country in North Africa that has not experienced sustained mass protests calling for a political change. This paper intends to explain why the Arab Spring has not spread to Algeria? This question becomes apparent bearing in mind that Algeria shares the same explosive factors that have provoked mass revolutions in the neighbouring countries: corruption, disproportion in the regional development, pauperization of society and the lack of civil and political rights. There are several explanations for this “immunity to revolution”. First – the fragmentation of Algerian opposition. Second – the fear of the return to the violence which Algerians have lived in for 50 years owing to two brutal conflicts – the war of independence and the civil war of the 90s. Third – the announcement of a raft of political and constitutional reforms by the present regime. Finally, the social peace was bought by the promise to resolve Algeria’s long-lasting economic problems starting with unemployment, the promise of implementation of the structural reforms and especially the direct and indirect transfers of public money (rise of salaries, subvention of basic commodities etc.).

Teachers are expert problem- solvers. Whether it is figuring out how to get shoelaces untangled or how to solve a thorny algebraic equation, teachers are industrious. Does anyone teach us how to solve problems? Maybe not. Our daily experiences and our diligent efforts to “figure it out” seem to be the most potent problem- solving skill builders. For some of us, problems make us eager; we treat problem- solving as a mystery, almost a game. Others approach problems like obstacles, deterrents to efficiency in learning and teaching. Asking for help can be one solution. Yet, as Curwin and Mendler advise in their seminal work describing discipline with dignity, be savvy about whom you ask for help: “Along with calming our­selves when angry, we need to be good at figuring out how to solve problems we have or that others try to give us. If we let other people give us their solutions, then they have power over us . . . . Each of us has the power to make our own decisions, and we need to decide who we will allow to influence us and who we won’t” (Curwin & Mendler, 1997, p. 94). The two authors also provide a succinct, six- step solution for problem- solving. The clear, practical advice may help those who struggle with this issue, at whatever age, in whatever setting. Techniques for Solving Problems: The Six- Step Solution 1. Stop and calm down. Pay attention to the signs that your body gives you when it feels tense. 2. Think. Consider your options. Think about the many different actions you can choose to take. 3. Decide. Choose a goal: what do you want to happen? Think about the consequences: what will happen if you actually do what you are thinking? 4. Choose a second solution, in case the first solution doesn’t work. Always have a backup plan ready. 5. Act. Carry out your decision. 6. Evaluate. Did you reach your goal? If the same problem occurs again, what will you do? Are there any people (par­ents, friends, teachers) who might help you as you figure out the best solution?

Currently, numerical simulation models for design of low-pressure turbines need submodels for determining the onset and path of transition. It is well known that such models must include the effects of passing wakes. In this paper, data taken in an experiment that simulates flow over the suction surface of a low-pressure turbine blade, as affected by passing wakes, are used for testing models from the literature. The base case data set replicates reasonable design conditions. A second case with double the wake spacing of the base case is applied to heighten the effects of between-wake calming. A third case with high background freestream turbulence intensity allows testing models for application to high disturbance level flows. Tested are (1) separated flow transition onset models such as those of Mayle and of Davis et al. and (2) attached flow transition onset models, such as those of Mayle, Abu-Ghannam and Shaw, Suzen and Huang and Drela. The dependent variables of the models, time-resolved locations of transition onset, are compared to time-resolved experimental values for transition onset. The transition onset values from the models are computed by assuming that the correlations can be applied in a quasistatic way using instantaneous values of the input parameters computed from the experimental data. Comparisons of the three cases are made to discuss the robustness of the transition onset models. Previously, the base case was presented. New in this paper are (1) modeling of an increased wake spacing data set, (2) modeling of a data set with a highly turbulent approach flow and (3) the comparison of the two with the base case results.
