Cette thèse se concentre principalement sur la collection des Voyages imaginaires, songes, visions et romans cabalistiques publiée par l'éditeur Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier (1787-1789). Elle contient de nombreuses œuvres de fiction françaises de la fin du XVIIe siècle et du XVIIIe siècle, ainsi que quelques traductions, principalement de l'anglais. Des romans tels que Robinson Crusoé de Defoe, Les Voyages de Gulliver de Swift, Micromégas de Voltaire, L'Autre Monde de Cyrano de Bergerac ou L'Histoire véritable de Lucien de Samosate figurent dans cette collection. La collection établie par Garnier constitue un excellent point de référence pour mieux comprendre ce qui rassemble ces fictions et ce qui les caractérise. Bien que les critiques modernes tendent à les assigner aux genres de l'utopie, de la science-fiction ou du fantastique, cette étude cherche à comprendre la riche catégorisation générique spécifique à cette période et à la situer par rapport à ces concepts plus modernes. La thèse propose ainsi un parcours critique structuré autour d'une exploration du paratexte pour éclairer les fondements du projet éditorial de Garnier. L'analyse se concentre premièrement sur la manière dont les paratextes orientent la réception des œuvres et construisent une cohérence d'ensemble. Ce premier regard s'élargit progressivement pour étudier l'effet de recueil en mettant en lumière les réseaux de significations qui tissent une cartographie de l'imaginaire. Cette dynamique est approfondie par une réflexion sur le genre littéraire articulée autour de deux dimensions : le rapport au voyage, à travers une rhétorique de la vraisemblance qui pastiche les récits authentiques, et le rapport à l'imagination, en examinant leur ancrage dans le merveilleux, la conjoncture rationnelle et le fantastique. Finalement, trois affirmations clés émergent de l'appareil paratextuel et se confirment au fil de l'étude. Premièrement, les voyages imaginaires et les genres apparentés ont une forte propension à l'intertextualité et à l'hypertextualité selon le sens de Gérard Genette. Deuxièmement, ces fictions s'inscrivent dans la catégorie des romans connue à l'époque sous le nom d'ouvrages d'imagination, aux côtés des contes de fées et des contes orientaux. Enfin, elles sont conçues pour avoir un impact éducatif sur le lecteur, participant ainsi à un projet d'édification critique
This thesis focuses primarily on the collection of Voyages imaginaires, songes, visions et romans cabalistiques published by Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier (1787-1789). It includes numerous French fictional works from the late 17th and 18th centuries, along with several translations, mainly from English. Novels such as Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Voltaire's Micromégas, Cyrano de Bergerac's L'Autre Monde, and Lucian of Samosata's A True Story are featured in this collection. The collection established by Garnier constitutes a good point of reference to better understand what brings together these fictions and what characterizes them. Although the modern critics tend to assign them to the genres of utopia, science fiction or to the French concept of fantastique, this study aims to explore the rich and nuanced genre categorisation specific to this period, situating it within the framework of modern concepts. The thesis proposes a critical journey structured around an examination of the paratext, shedding light on the foundations of Garnier's editorial project. The analysis focuses first on how these paratexts shape the reception of the works and create a cohesive narrative. This initial perspective gradually broadens to consider the collection effect revealing the intricate networks of meaning that form a comprehensive cartography of the imagination. This exploration is further enriched by a reflection on literary genre, articulated through two dimensions: the relationship to travel, characterized by a rhetoric of verisimilitude that pastiches authentic narratives, and the relationship to imagination, examining their connections to fantasy, rational conjecture and the fantastique. Finally, three key statements emerge from the paratextual apparatus and are confirmed in the course of the study. First, the imaginary voyages have a strong propensity for intertextuality and hypertextuality in Gérard Genette's sense. Second, these fictions are part of the novelistic category known at the time as works of imagination (ouvrages d'imagination) alongside fairy tales and oriental tales. Finally, they are supposed to have an educational impact on the reader, thus contributing to a project of critical edification
