The purpose of this study was to investigate how a group of Chinese business students understood the nature and the purpose of the instruction techniques they were exposed to in Britain, and the attitudes the students, Chinese lecturers in China and British lecturers in Britain held towards seminar discussions. The study also investigated how and to what extent students’ prior learning experiences predisposed them to certain attitudes towards seminar discussions. The student participants in this study undertook Part I of their degree programme at a Chinese university for two years before transferring to Britain to study for one year, graduating with a British Bachelors Degree in International Business. Data was gathered from classroom observations, follow-up and exploratory interviews, and a questionnaire survey to discover more about the students’ learning experiences in Part I in China, and from classroom observations, audio-recordings, and follow-up and exploratory interviews to investigate the same group of students’ learning experiences in Part II in Britain. A ranking task and interviews were used to identify the preferences of Chinese students, British lecturers, and Chinese lecturers from China in terms of specific group discussion methods. The study identified three discussion methods used by students in British seminars: these have been termed ‘spiral’, ‘exploratory’ and ‘individual’ methods. The Chinese students tended to use the ‘spiral’ method, repeatedly bringing the discussion back to the question provided by the seminar tutor, whereas the non-Chinese students tended to use the ‘exploratory’ method, reformulating each other’s opinions and building on them by bringing in new information. When discussing within Chinese-only groups, the Chinese students used the ‘individual’ method whereby a group leader took responsibility for the outcomes of the discussion and the other members did not build upon each other’s contributions. Chinese and non-Chinese students sometimes misunderstood each others’ intentions, but were not likely to notice that miscommunication had occurred. The ranking task and the follow-up interviews revealed that the British lecturers preferred the ‘exploratory’ discussion method, whereas Chinese lecturers from China and Chinese students preferred the ‘spiral’ method. The British lecturers were found to adopt a constructivist approach to group discussion tasks, seeing them as a means by which students could obtain professional experience. They treated Business and Management knowledge as divergent and ‘soft’. Chinese lecturers and students, on the other hand, were found to perceive group discussion as a kind of assessment and were keen to find ‘correct’ answers to case study problems, treating Business and Management as convergent and hard disciplines which offered judgements on good practice. The Chinese lecturers in Part I of the programme organised group discussion so that students could exchange answers and check their accuracy, and, perhaps because of this, in Part I the students learnt in an exam-oriented way, strategically dividing up their tasks and working individually on their own task portions in order to find an acceptable answer as quickly as possible. These students were found to continue to employ these strategies during group work after they had transferred to the British component of their degree programme. The study has made a theoretical contribution to knowledge concerning the cultural influences on students’ classroom interactional practices. The findings from the study have implications for the teaching of intercultural business communication, and the enhancement of students’ learning experiences in international business programmes, in business English programmes in China, and whilst learning within groups.

The rising globalisation, supported by rapid technology innovations has changed our current business environment within the last years. As a result, especially SMEs have to cope with a higher pressure of maximising their efficiency and competitiveness in order to survive on the market. Nevertheless, many managers recognised the great potential of outsourcing to utilise the enormous benefits of external suppliers to solve this problem. For instance, it enables the SMEs to concentrate on their core capabilities combined with exploiting synergy affects of the supplier cooperation as costs savings, access to R&D knowledge etc. But the outsourcing dimension changed as well, due to the increased globalisation, companies are not hesitating anymore to step over their country boundaries and offshore to high promising emerging countries like China. However, offshoring cannot perform miracles, more it presents one of the most strategic and complex decisions affecting the whole company.

Based on these facts, this Master Thesis investigates how an SME should outsource to China. The basis of the outsourcing decision is examined to make the right strategic decision, which is illustrated with a developed model. More, the supplier selection and maintenance are explained, followed by the description of the facts which have to be considered when offshoring to China. Particularly due to the focus on offshoring to China, this thesis will further look into the affects of the Chinese culture on the companies’ networks. The research is based on a case study, which is further used to derive general conclusions for other SMEs.

The result of the investigation is that SMEs should decide which parts to outsource from a strategic point of view. Further to cope with the lack of resources and the Chinese cultural issues the cooperation with an intermediary is recommended.

Private labels have been developing in Europe for a long time, but China is still in the primary stage. Compared with the developed countries, Chinese retail enterprises, especially supermarkets, have a lower level of their private label development. With the expansion of Chinese retail business, private labels have been adopted by more and more enterprises. However, the existing supermarkets’ private labels are not well known to Chinese consumers. The purpose of this study is to compare the different opinions regarding private labels from Chinese young consumers and Swedish young consumers towards RT-Mart and ICA respectively. Both the Chinese supermarket RT-Mart and the Swedish supermarket ICA have a large number of stores and quite a lot of influences in the local area. This study uses a case study method to study from the perspective of the consumer. This paper first introduces the background of private labels, and then analyzes the actual situation of ICA and RT-Mart. From the consumer perspective, we studied the different ideas of young consumers in two countries on their private labels. The analysis is based on young consumers of different nationalities.

Risk management focuses on adopting a systematic and consistent approach to manage all of the risks confronting an organization.With the emergence of world as a globe village, companies are diversifying their activities; result in the increase of risks. Besides the business core activities, the increased use of derivative products by both financial and non-financial institutions and recent events or scandals continue to demonstrate the need for enhanced standards and processes of control over risk. This is of greatest interest for multinational companies, insurance organizations, banks, securities houses and non-financial institutions given the extent of their business activities in derivative products.The objective of this thesis is to identify the role and importance of internal control system in good risk management practice with a particular emphasis on management structure and reporting system and in general with Principles of Corporate Governance and Risk Management. Our focus is on the China Aviation Oil Corporation Ltd., (CAO). We will draw attention to the regulatory environment and recent regulatory and supervisory developments with respect to risk management practice.To be able to fulfill the purpose of study, qualitative research method was considered, using an inductive approach of a single case study of China Aviation Oil Corporation Ltd., with company related research literature, Committee of Sponsoring Organization of the Treadway Commission and Fortis Bank as source of data.Based on the analysis, a number of observations were put forward in the conclusion. To begin with the strategy in relation to management structure and reporting system of CAO are employed after the company crisis for better control and reporting system. In addition, the role of information technology is considered in risk management. Meanwhile, the good governance and risk management according to Accounting Standards application in risk management system and corporate governance are included in the discussion. In attempt of entrepreneur risk management in the firm, we also discuss the role of Enterprise Risk Management on the organizational performance with different perspectives.

This paper reports a case study conducted at a local Government-aided primary school in Hong Kong to explore the teaching and learning of three students with special educational needs (SEN). The research aims to investigate the perceptions of the principal, teachers, social workers, students and parents on inclusive education, and look at the practicability and feasibility of the school inclusive policy. Results indicated that although the school embraces the inclusive ideology in principle, the interviewees expressed serious reservation on the Government promoted whole school integration approach to include all students with special educational needs. The study on one hand examined the government and school policy and practice on inclusion, and on the other hand identified the difficulties and obstacles encountered by the school, some of which were regarded as fundamental problems that require changes in the educational system. The paper ends with recommendations for further research that is worth exploring in order to achieve a true and effective inclusive educational system in the Hong Kong landscape. Research methodology is qualitative. Interviews were conducted with a number of school staff and two parents of the SEN students. The interviews focused on how school key personnel and teachers viewed their roles, contributions, and difficulties in implementing inclusive education, and how parents view the studies and growth of their children at the case school. A 10-week observations aimed at observing how the three students under the case study adapted, learnt and grew in a mainstream school environment. Through inductive reasoning, data collected was subsequently grouped into patterns and regularities. There are two recurrent themes brought up at the study. First, the success of inclusive education rests largely and predominately on the ‘heart and soul’ – the attitudes and values of the teachers in educating the SEN students; and second, the school does not have the right conditions, in particular, sufficient resources to provide a true inclusive environment for the SEN students with intensive support needs, where the system must change to adapt to the children’s needs and not the vice versa. The general conclusion developed is that the case school, in face of the increasing number of SEN students, is forced to do more with less under the current government inclusive policy; and the SEN students themselves are forced to squeeze in the shoes of the regular students in a mainstream school. Without a system change, there is only partial inclusion at the mainstream school, and the SEN students must adapt to the regular classroom mode and curriculum, or fail.

This study explores the role and meaning of general education in Chinese higher education in the face of ongoing social changes in China, using Fudan University (FU) as a case study. General education has been heatedly discussed and greatly promoted in Chinese higher education since the last decade of the 20th century. Since existing theories and conceptions of general education mainly focus on Western, especially American, higher education, there has been little exploration of the meaning and role of general education in China, which has very different sociopolitical and cultural traditions from those of many Western nations, especially in the context of economic globalization. Therefore, an exploration of the meaning and role of general education in Chinese higher education could help to provide either challenges or supplements to existing theories and conceptions of general education. This study adopted the qualitative case study with FU as the case to explore the research problem. It used three data collection methods – document collection and review, interviews and observation – to gain an in-depth understanding of the development and tasks of general education at FU during periods of social transformation of China from 1905 to 2004, and during the latest reforms to general education at FU, between 2005 and 2012. Data collected from historical documents identified that general education at FU had mainly assumed two persistent tasks during periods of social transformation of China between 1905 and 2004. The first task was to facilitate the transmission of core cultural values, as defined mainly by the leaders of the state in different periods, to help the state to preserve its national identity. The second task was to equip students with knowledge, capacities and values, mainly Western in origin, to facilitate the state’s economic modernization. Further analysis of documentary, interview and observation data also identified continuities in and changes to the sociopolitical/cultural and economic tasks of general education at FU between 2005 and 2012; specifically, that general education still transmitted state-promoted core cultural values and still equipped students with a wider range of knowledge and capacities, but the contents of those values and the nature of those knowledge and capacities had changed due to the further development of China’s market economy and the effects of economic globalization. Based on these findings, this study proposed a concept to understand the meaning and role of general education at FU in the context of ongoing social changes in China. This thesis argues that, at FU, general education can be interpreted as a curricular instrument for nation-building that helps China promote its sociopolitical/cultural and economic tasks by facilitating (a) the inheritance of selected Chinese and non-Chinese cultural values, and (b) the equipment of students with a broader range of knowledge and capacities to cope with China’s changing economy. This study identified that, to facilitate China’s nation building ambitions, general education transmitted to students (a) Chinese and non-Chinese (particularly Western) cultural values, and (b) both traditional cultural values and contemporary cultural values prescribed by different national leaders (and/or scholars) in different historical periods. Further, this study identified two tensions in general education for nation-building: (a) the tension between traditional and contemporary Chinese cultures, and (b) the tension between selected Chinese and non-Chinese cultures. This study shows the ebb and flow of traditional Chinese cultural values in the sociopolitical/cultural task of general education, and how it has been shaped by China’s nation building since the early 20th century under the economic and military challenges of foreign nations. The concept of general education proposed by this study helps to explain the persistence of the economic and the sociopolitical/cultural task of general education at FU during the periods of social changes of China from 1905 to 2012. The study also identified that the economic task of general education mandated the import of elements of Western culture and values and therefore created tension with the Chinese cultural values transmitted in general education’s sociopolitical/cultural task. The concept of general education proposed by this study has implications for existed theories and conceptions of general education (mainly Western in context) which do not show (a) the coexistence of and the tensions between traditional and contemporary national cultures in the tasks of general education, and (b) the coexistence of and tensions between the economic and sociopolitical/cultural tasks of general education. Further research is suggested into the complex relationships among and tensions between different cultures as general education facilitates nation-building.

Due to the globalization trend, the transformation of Chinese OEM has become a hot topic in the last decades. Although the previous literature suggested that there were many different determinants influencing firms to be successful companies, there is a lack of combination in the context of Chinese OEM. Thus, the purpose of this research study is to find out the approach of Chinese OEMs to successfully launch their own products based on three perspectives - organizational structure, processes and culture.Applying a qualitative approach, the data was gathered through semi-structured telephone interviews with the senior personnel of one Chinese OEM company (Damekiss), complemented with secondary data collected from the company’s and public websites.The results of analysis showed different views of how organizational structure, process and culture influencing on the transformation of Chinese OEM. We found that four functions (i.e. manufacturing, distribution, new product development and human resource management) influenced the transformation of Chinese OEM in organizational structure perspective. Among these functions, human resource management and distribution are extremely weak in the organizational structure of Chinese OEM. Regarding to the process of formulating these functions, the deep understanding of the customers’ preferences and collaboration partners that influenced building distribution were figured out. In the case company, it showed a relative poor ability on distribution which would be the barriers for further developing. Building HRM process was raised as another issue of the transformation of Chinese OEMs. According to the case company, HRM was poorly organized. The recruitment did not get enough attention; the training programs stayed at a lower level. The last not least, the corporate culture was also proven to be playing an important role in the transformation of Chinese OEMs. Awareness of corporate culture as one of significant aspects influencing the entire company was found in the case company. Slogan, company heroes and rituals as an internal culture were properly used to motivate employees.

There is intensive research in knowledge management study for the private sector in Western countries. However, less research has been done for the public sector, and none has been done in the Chinese public sector. The motivation is that knowledge management issues in the public sector are much neglected in the Chinese public sector. Moreover, compared with knowledge management in the private sector, knowledge management in the public sector has received much less attention. This thesis investigates issues and difficulties and important factors in the process and the implementation of knowledge management for Chinese public organizations and to help them have a better understanding of the process of the knowledge management by developing a framework that is applicable to the Chinese public sector. To address issues and difficulties in the Chinese public sector, this study explored how knowledge management can be applied to the Chinese public organization context. This involves complicated social processes such as social relationships both in and outside the organization. This research takes a social constructionist paradigm, trying to understand and interpret the Chinese public managers' unique experiences, perceived values and embedded Chinese culture that can have great impact on the application of knowledge management to the Chinese public organization. In line with this philosophical stance, Forty three Customs officers in China Customs, mainly at middle or lower level of management, were involved in qualitative interview, with data analyzed through content analysis. The research findings indicate that China Customs has been engaging knowledge management activities all the time although there is no explicit mentioning of the term `knowledge management' and staff has insufficient perception and awareness of the concept of knowledge management. Its management style is strongly influenced by Chinese political system and the Chinese traditions. Therefore, to effectively manage knowledge, it is necessary to change the mindset of leaders and gain their support financially and morally in fostering a learning and knowledge sharing culture, developing a knowledge management strategy, training and rewarding people, and building an infrastructure for information technology. The study is an in-depth analysis of one large government organization's practice of knowledge management, which has not been studied before. Contributively, this study offers understanding of applying knowledge management to the Chinese public context. By drawing upon experience of Chinese public managers, it extends knowledge management theories and offers a contribution to practice grounded in the Chinese context. Significantly, this thesis develops a framework , consisting five activities of knowledge process and six identified important factors through literature review and interviews, by integrating factors into the whole knowledge management process, providing practical guidance for the Chinese public managers to inform how knowledge will be managed in the Chinese public sector.

Since the 1980s, decision-making and managerial power has gradually been handed over to higher education institutions in China. This has helped to reduce the government’s financial burden and improve the administrative efficiency of universities. A particular reform involves the establishment of autonomous experimental units within 36 universities. These decentralized units are more highly dependent on market forces than other parts of the university. This thesis examines the development of one such academic unit within one of China’s major universities. The particular academic unit, heretofore referred to as a “school” is studied through a detailed examination of its teaching, research and administration. It is granted a high degree of autonomy to manage itself and its finance. Therefore, it is encouraged to be innovative in its organizational structure and working procedures. This helps drive it to cooperate with industry and adopt a market mechanism in management. The research demonstrates the changing relationships of this school with its parent university, with governments at different levels, and with industry and the wider society. The results indicate that a major shift is taking place in Chinese higher education, as China responds with increased marketization and decentralization. Borrowing theories developed by Clark and Oliver in the fields of higher education and organizational theory, this thesis not only provides a deeper understating of the triangular relationship among universities, state authority and the market, but also refines these theories to suit the Chinese context. This investigation reveals that thus a particular academic unit, unlike most university units in China, must respond to external pressures and expectations in order to survive in a new context of decentralization and commodification. The thesis identifies and analyzes the critical factors affecting the school’s development and its coping strategies within an altered environment of operation. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this work views the selected unit of a major Chinese university as an open organizational system, and analyzes the external and internal forces that influence the school’s development. The data collection approach is comprised of semi-structured and unstructured interviews to elicit views and perceptions from the respondents regarding the decision-making, policy implementation and the development of the unit. A focus group interview method is used to question current undergraduate and postgraduate students about perceptions and attitudes towards the development of the unit. Documents are used to obtain background information and to support and triangulate the data collected from individual and group interviews. Although the school failed to make radical changes to the existing university structure and institutions, it has demonstrated the ability to sustain itself, innovate, and gain legitimacy through continuing negotiation and compromise with university authority, government and market. Based on the results of this research, I would argue that if units similar to this one within Chinese universities are granted more administrative autonomy and orient themselves to market forces, Chinese universities will be able to integrate themselves into the increasingly marketized economy and contribute to national development without sacrificing the core academic missions of teaching, research and service.

This dissertation inquires into policy adoption and adaptation in the context of Chinese higher education development. Three primary research interests inform the dissertation – how global patterns have been adopted into national higher education (HE) policy, how HE institutions organize their governance structures in a globalized context, and whether individual academics can influence the adoption and adaptation of global HE patterns. Due to its open-ended and exploratory nature, the study employs a qualitative research design. Embedded cases and grounded theory are used to generate theories. Four faculties at two public universities in Guangzhou (one research university and one teaching university) are employed to answer specific research questions. Theoretical sampling was employed in choosing the research sites, according to maximizing and minimizing strategies. Semi-structured interviews, document analysis, content analysis and textual analysis were all used to explore all aspects of organizational governance in the case universities. The national level of policy transfer in Chinese HE provides room for agents to exert their capacity on initial policy contents. Policy transfer mainly focuses on policy goals, while specific policy contents and implementation tools are always decided by grassroots HE institutions on a case-by-case basis. At the organizational level, the researcher found dissipative structure in the process of academic capitalization, explaining the changing equilibrium of the transformation of HE governance in the case HE organizations. At the individual level, though academics believe they have little opportunity to participate in formal decision-making processes, they constantly influence the rules and policies of their organizations, exercising their agency to change the direction of policy through phyletic gradualism. This study contributes to the existing literature in four ways. First, by employing dissipative structure, it sheds light on internal and external resource exchanges in HE organizations, thus widening the power of resource dependence theory to explain dynamic change. Second, this study provides a research illumination beyond the methodological confines of separating the individual from the organizational level of research when discuss changes to HE governance. Third, it reveals the features of policy adoption at the national level by systematically tracing policy adoption trajectories in different aspects of HE governance in China. Finally, this study unfolds the capacity of agents in HE organizations and shows that agents in a HE organization can transform or reproduce the initial structural policy and institutional context in which they work and live.

This thesis describes the genesis, evolution, and function of a unique institution: London's South Bank Technopark, in the period 1979-92. A case study of this incubator, innovation centre, and Science Park has revealed several unexpected aspects of its activities. The most notable of these has been the degree of educational and training activity in the Technopark -- both formal and informal - which set it apart from other UK Science Parks, and provide a link between the Technopark and its inner city environment. The multimethod case study involved a largely ethnographic survey of the Technopark's management and tenants and related personnel, supplemented by reference to the Technopark's archives and management file. The study was concluded with a comparative phase of fieldwork involving in-depth interviews with senior figures in seven other UK and US science parks, and in the international science park movement. In all, 67 interviewees in six categories were interviewed in a total of 168 interviews. Entrepreneurialism in the Technopark was investigated via interviews with tenant firms and an intensive study of the management team, enabling key factors in the enterprise process to be identified. The Technopark compared favourably with similar institutions visited as an incubator of new firms, and a creator of jobs and job opportunities via on-site education and training. Models of science park activity have been constructed, from which it is seen that the Technopark is part of an evolutionary continuum leading to science cities and the Multi Function Polis. It is concluded that not only is the Technopark a commercial success; it is also a model inner city incubator, innovation centre, and science park which has brought the benefits of new knowledge based businesses and job creation, as well as innovative training and educational programmes, to a deprived urban area.

This thesis involved Tetra Pak and corrugated cardboard suppliers in China at various locations to understand how this industry looks like, the reasons for inconsistent quality and analysis of the current state of whole industry, and recommendations for improvement.

As innovation can bring competitive advantage to companies, our thesis focused upon making extended value of material flow from Tetra Pak and suppliers. The aim of this project is to investigate how strategic intelligence can create value and strengthen Tetra Pak business relationship with its customers in big emerging markets like China. Theoretical framework creates a foundation for how to structure the efficiently utilize intelligence in the decision-making process for a MNC.

Another aspect of the thesis was to examine supply network management process and the supplier relationship development in China, as well as the strategic, social, macro economy aspects that influence change management in medium and large organizations.

Corrugated cardboard industry in China is still in a transitioning to a mature market. One conclusion drawn from the trip to China is that the dairy producer should start emphasizing visual control on quality, and less concern on price. They should see their suppliers as long term partners but not just treat them as providers. Because it is fundamentally undercutting the ability of the organization to improve what it provides to customers through better quality and productivity. It hinders efforts from reducing cost.

Finally, the research problems we focus throughout this thesis will be answered after the analysis. Moreover, we will provide some suggestions about corrugated industry and our case company-Tetra Pak.

One of the major developments marking the global economy is the emergence of regional trading blocks. This study takes into account this trend and it addresses a question about business administration departments in Mexican universities: To what extent and in what ways do they reflect the influence of NAFTA and globalization on their curriculum, structure, and mission? Conceptually, the study draws on dependency theory and institutional theory. Dependency theory was useful for understanding globalization in Mexican business administration as affected through business and linkages to the U.S. Institutional theory was useful in understanding and explaining specific mechanisms experienced by the departments as they relate to the different professional organizations in society. This study considered four departments located in large public and private universities in Northwestern Mexico. Documents and interviews were the two principal sources of data. This investigation involved the analysis of 46 documents, and 26 interviews conducted with administrators and faculty in Business Administration programs. The analysis of data indicated that private departments hold national and international relationships that influence curriculum change while the public departments are more nationally oriented in relationships and curriculum change.

Purpose: This paper is to investigate the impacts of education, law andfamily factors influence of the gender situation. And what factor hasmost impact to change the sex discrimination situation in China Design /method/approach: We did a survey at a Chinese university.In total, 96 student informants and 134 staff informants were surveyedin order to get the opinions of the gender discrimination. Finding: We find education, law and family factors all can influencethe opinion of gender situation. Conclusion: The relationship between education, family and lawshould be mutual promotion and mutual influence. But from thesurvey’s result, education has the largest influence on gender situation.The second one is family factor, and the law factor has lowest affect.The reason for these results is traditional family culture and the policyof government. Unbalanced policies and the culture of family, both ofthem lead to the differences of influence. Suggestion for future research: First, the research base only in auniversity, although the sample covers gender, education elements, thegeneralization of the conclusion is still limited due to the sample size.In the future, more informants should be covered to test the hypothesesproposed. Second, the authors only discussed education, law andfamily factors influence of the gender discrimination. Future studiesare encouraged to deeply explore what else factors can influencepeople’s opinions on gender discrimination. Contribution of the thesis: Owing the lack of empirical research onthe situation of gender discrimination in China, this thesis provides anempirical study on the factors influencing the gender discrimination.Our research results can help Chinese to develop better solution toreduce the gender discrimination.
