Повний текст джерелаBrowsing ungulates can potentially have drastic impacts on vegetation patterns. This is particularly true in African savannas where many large browsers persist at high densities. Most of the theory and models outlining mechanisms of impact on plants and predicting responses are framed in terms of biomass impacts and responses. However, for trees in African savannas, fitness is more closely linked to height than above ground biomass. I evaluate the demographic impacts of browsing, making explicit contrasts with impacts on biomass. The results highlight under- explored intrinsic aspects of plants and browsers that determine the degree of browser impact on plant demography, aspects that have been under-explored due to an emphasis on biomass responses, and provide novel methods to measure and evaluate large-scale browser impacts, which have proved difficult before.

Повний текст джерелаRoe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) and Red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) coexist in Northeastern Portugal. This work aims to increase the knowledge on the effects of these two species on Mediterranean lignified plants, in particular on shrub like vegetation. To understand these effects we studied the diet of both deer species during two consecutive years. Red deer eat more grasses during Spring, contrasting with Summer, when 80% of the diet was shrubs and broadleaved trees. Roe deer consumed more shrubs and trees, throughout the year and had a more diversified diet than Red deer. Other important effect of deer is by tree rubbing, which occurs mainly during the rut season. Red deer marked trees preferably along edges of forest plantations whereas Roe Deer showed a preference for inner and smaller trees inside forest plantations. We used simulated browsing to understand how Holm oak responds to deer attacks, as well as two mediterranean shrub species Gum cistus (Cistus ladanifer) and Pterospartum tridentatum. P. tridentatum responsed with an increase of biomass and in the root system diameter. Holm oak responded with an increase at crown level and Gum cistus reduced biomass when browsed treatment was applied. Seed regeneration was also studied on Holm oak, using deer exclosures. Seedling survival was higher inside exclosures after 3 years.

Знайти повний текст джерелаDue to overpopulation and resource-poor habitat structure, deer threaten the future of oak and other browse-sensitive species in hardwood forests. Appropriate tools must be used to ensure desirable, diverse, and ecologically stable regeneration of future forests and the sustainability of native plant communities. We performed two experiments and a review to examine the effectiveness of available methods for managing browse of hardwood seedlings and to discover how these interact with each other and other silvicultural methods. First, we examined how fencing interacts with controlled-release fertilization, seed source (genetically select and non-select), and site type (afforested and reforested sites) to enhance the regeneration of planted northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.), white oak (Quercus alba), black cherry (Prunus serotina), and black walnut (Juglans nigra) at five sites in Indiana. Fencing proved to be the greatest determinant of seedling growth, survival, and quality. Fertilizer enhanced the early growth of white oak and black cherry, though for black cherry this occurred only inside fences. Select seed sources grew better and showed greater quality; however, the survival of select seedlings was limited by deer browse in absence of fences. Trees at afforested sites had lower survival if left non-fenced. Secondly, we also investigated how fencing and invasive shrub removal affected natural regeneration, species richness, and ground-layer plant cover under closed-canopy forests. Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) removal had a variable effect depending on species and site. Positive effects were most common for shade-intolerant species, while negative effects occurred for a few shade-tolerant species at some sites. Deer fencing had a positive effect on cherry and hackberry seedling density, and a negative effect on elm seedling density. Honeysuckle and deer fencing interacted antagonistically in some instances. Fencing without honeysuckle removal resulted in lower elm abundance and herbaceous-layer cover. In the densest invasions, leaving honeysuckle intact resulted in a complete lack of recruitment into the sapling layer. Our experiment suggests that invasive shrub removal and fencing be done together. Finally, we synthesized the existing literature on browse management options for hardwood regeneration to evaluate their relative effectiveness. Fences, tree shelters, repellents, facilitation by neighboring plants, deer population control, timber harvest, and slash all had positive effects on height growth of regenerating seedlings under deer browse pressure. Fences were more effective at reducing browse than repellents, while fertilizers increased browse and had no effects on growth.

Habits not only can influence purchase behaviors, decision-making, and staff operations, the present study is based on Po-Lung Yu’s habitual domains theory to study the use of websites on campus and users’ habits related to the design of websites. In this study, users’ habits are classified into different types of habits to investigate whether users’ habits of using portal websites would indirectly affect the perception of using university websites. In the study, a questionnaire survey was conducted and the data collected from the questionnaire survey were analyzed using AMOS. As shown in the results, most of the information exchange tended to be hearsay and therefore university portal websites were not frequently used. The results have also shown that the habits of using portal websites could directly affect perceived usefulness of university portal websites and indirectly affect behavioral intentions to use university portal websites. User habits of using functions on student portal websites could affect perceived ease of using university portal websites and indirectly affect users’ behavioral intentions to use university portal websites. The interface design habits of student portal websites did not affect perceived ease of using university portal websites and behavioral intentions to use university portal websites. Application of habitual domains theory to websites utilizes users’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use to influence user behavioral intentions. This study suggests that frequently used functions should be added to university portal websites to facilitate effective use of the websites. This study also suggests that there should be instructions for new or modified frequently used functions and incentives should be added to help users habituate the use of university portal websites.

Bennett, Ami. "The impacts of sambar (Cervus unicolor) in the Yarra Ranges National Park." 2008. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/6804.
Повний текст джерелаFaecal pellet transect surveys determined that sambar occupancy and density was greatest on open flats, lower on forest edges adjacent to open flats (< 250 m), and significantly less in other forested areas of the catchment. Observations of The Flats revealed that hinds were the main demographic class represented, with a mean group size of 39 individuals, and up to 70. This is the largest aggregation of sambar ever reported anywhere in the world, and equates to an approximate density of 200 km-2 at this site.
Selective exclosures effectively differentiated the offtake of forage by sambar from that of native herbivores. Sambar contributed to the majority of offtake at The Flats, and were able to obtain a substantial proportion of their daily food requirements from this source. A culling program began in the Yarra Ranges National Park in May 2008, to reduce the large numbers of deer in the park. The cull reduced the time spent by sambar on The Flats, as determined by faecal pellet accumulation plots, and significantly reduced faecal pellet load and forage offtake.
Sambar significantly decreased relative foliage cover of shiny nematolepis (Nematolepis wilsonii), a threatened understorey tree, through their antler rubbing activities. Thrashing of shiny nematolepis saplings also significantly decreased relative foliage cover, with sambar selecting saplings with a larger stem diameter from those available. Rubbed trees and thrashed saplings experienced damage to, on average, over half the stem circumference.
Selective exclosures allowed differentiation of sambar and native herbivore browsing on forest understoreys. Browsing by sambar in high densities prevented the vertical growth of plants in the understorey, with branches above 60 cm in height most commonly browsed. Plants in the understorey were more frequently and intensely browsed in areas of high sambar density. Three species were browsed to a significantly greater extent by sambar than native herbivores: hazel pomaderris (Pomaderris aspera), prickly tea-tree (Leptospermum continentale) and prickly bush-pea, (Pultenaea juniperina). Sambar significantly reduced plant biomass in forest understoreys where they occur in high densities.
The presence of large, open herb-rich areas drives the high local densities and associated impacts of sambar within the Yarra Ranges National Park. Future areas of research are identified and management recommendations are outlined. A sustained culling program appears to be the only practical option to reduce sambar density and impacts at this locality.

Повний текст джерелаThe average American spends more than twenty hours online each week (EMarketer, 2013, pp. 8). Time online is spent working, browsing social networks, watching videos and consuming news. With so much of consumers’ attention focused on the Internet, advertisers have worked to leverage persuasive tactics within their online display advertising. For example, designers and agencies employed animated ads, gamification, and intrusion as methods to garner attention. Even still, a consumer’s ability to ignore ad space, also known as “banner blindness,” is widespread and well documented (Adotas, 2009, pp. 7-11). This research will consider not only what is on the screen but also what is going on in the head of the consumer to analyze the ways in which online browsing behavior, specifically leisurely information seeking, impacts recall and recognition of web advertisements.

As the mobile platform technology matures, the visual effect of web browsing gradually attracts attention. Responsive web design (RWD) is a new development in web design technology. This study uses the analytical skills of means-end chains as the basis for empirical applications and in-depth stepped interviews to understand users’ experience with RWD, and the research results show that “screen size”, “simple and straightforward contents”, “maneuverability”, “interface friendliness”, “browsing speed” and “scenarios” are the six key attributes affecting visitors’ use of RWD. After the application of stem classification and coding of the content analysis method, a “hierarchical value map” is drawn through an “implication matrix” for analysis. Seven RWD attributes are summed up from the analysis results (including the widely used high-tension graphs, narrative viewpoints, photographic images and “less is more” on the visual aspect, and the application of sliding, man-machine interface and function-oriented appearance on the functional aspect), and the implication of each is explained. We expect to help platform developers with the research results to better understand user needs and make full use of the study’s value.

In recent years, with the increase of work pressure, the decrease of leisure time, the rise of public health awareness and the increase of disposable income, people pay more and more attention to sports life. Over the past decade, the number of gyms and health clubs around the world has increased rapidly, and the number of members has steadily increased. In order to improve performance, the industry has also offered a variety of package discounts to consumers. Consumer purchasing decision-making model shows that when consumers make purchasing decisions, they collect information about products or services to make purchasing decisions. In the era of social media, sports information sharing is more convenient and fast than before. From the past sports information websites that transmit information to the present sports forums and fans groups that share sports experience and sports process articles, photos, sports forums, emphasizing practicability and emotional interaction, tourism information transmission is more frequent and fast. Therefore, it is an important issue to understand how consumers participate in the community media containing sports content and then influence their consumption decisions. This study will explore consumer behavior in community media with sports content. In addition, this study uses the IS-Continuance Model proposed by Bhattacherjee (2001) as the infrastructure, together with the sympathetic views of Escalas and Stern (2003) and Hsiao et al. (2013), as well as the antecedents of trust, perceptual similarity, self-reference, perceptual aesthetics and narrative structure, to explore the elimination. Consumer browsing includes consumer behavior generated by sports community media. In order to make users willing to continue browsing online articles containing sports content and social media, or to increase the purchase of sports clothing and supplies, in addition to letting users feel that relevant articles are helpful to them, but also to let users have a sympathetic feeling.

Search and transaction costs have been substantially reduced in the digital world, enabling consumers to reach multiple providers of similar products or services at the same time. As the Accenture Global Consumer Survey (2013) indicates that consumers are more inclined to switch providers and the adoption of loyalty programs has declined slightly in recent years, an empirical study evaluating the impact of customer loyalty on financial performance would provide guidance for whether firms should still invest in customer loyalty program in the digital world today. Research gaps exist in prior research. First, most prior empirical studies in the field of customer loyalty are not able to consider the same customer’s relationship with the company’s competitors, and a loyal customer defined in their studies might purchase more at the company’s competitors. Second, many eCommerce practitioners view conversion rate as one of the most important performance indicators and many researchers associate conversion rate with profitability of Web sites. However, no empirical research measures the relationship between conversion rate and financial performance before. Therefore, the goal toward higher conversion rate might be irrational groupthink. This research overcomes the insufficiency in prior research by incorporating competitors’ information and utilizing high-quality online consumer data collected by comScore. Defining industry boundaries is the premise for identifying competitors; we use four criteria to select the appropriate sample firms across 8 industries. Two statistical models- regression and decision tree model are employed to investigate the impact of customer loyalty, browsing behavior, and websites’ marketing strategy on financial performance. Our research result justifies the allocation of resources to customer loyalty programs, even when consumers are able to compare multiple items easily online today. In the multiple regression model, we find that the impact of customer loyalty on financial performance is much stronger than conversion rate, and we suggest companies should prioritize their efforts on cultivating customer loyalty. Building stickier relationships and utilization of the appropriate interaction strategies play the import roles as well. Stickiness is positive related to financial performance, and we think stickiness might generate “home advantage” for Websites. The most important finding from our research is the conversion rate, which should be considered as a variable for marketing strategy, not a performance indicator. A website’s conversion rate, as trying to convert every visitor to customer, is not the best performance indicator; some customers or visitors may within the segmentation that would not benefit a firm financially, because they are not sticky and will not make repeated purchase if they do not get attractive pricing. It is meaningless to convert those visitors to customers. We find that customer conversion rate should be associated with browsing behavior, and the appropriate conversion strategy should be applied for individual customer, implying the utilization of interactive marketing is an important factor for financial performance. Companies should invest in interactive database marketing and real-time computing systems, know each visitor better, and then apply the appropriate marketing strategy. Companies selling products or services to stickier loyal customers with right marketing strategies, can create 31% more value to shareholders, compared to companies selling products or services to less sticky disloyal customers. Our research provides valuable insight not only for marketers, CFOs and CEOs in the business, but also for investors and analysts in the capital market. In conclusion, to improve financial performance, we propose the traditional customer loyal model should be used for eCommerce, and applied with the “smarter way”.

With “Tech Tap”, the marketing space of bricks-and-mortar has been transforming into the clicks-and-mortar. The online shopping population is growing fast recently, enlarges bricks-and-mortar marketing and brings huge valuation. Especially the apparel products occupy maximum proportion as consumers shopping online. In this context, how to let consumers go impulse buying on the network from a web browser is an important issue. Product attributes and website interface design are key elements to impact consumers in browsing. The purpose of this study is to explore product attributes, website interface design, utilitarian browsing, hedonic browsing and impulse buying affect the relationship between each other. The purpose explore the differences of the variables of gender on various research and comparing different shopping websites to research the hypothesis affect the relationship between the differences and apparel shopping websites as an example. After issuing 550 questionnaires, this study adopts statistical analysis methods including descriptive statistics analysis, reliability and validity analysis, structural equation modeling and independent t-test. The results indicates: (1)Product attributes positively affects utilitarian browsing and hedonic browsing. (2)Website interface design positively affects utilitarian browsing and hedonic browsing. (3)Product attributes positively affects impulse buying. (4)Hedonic browsing positively affects impulse buying. (5)Gender on hedonic browsing and impulse buying has differences. (6)Different shopping sites on the relationship of the various hypotheses impact some differences.

In recent years there has been an increasing of the domestic tourism which brings the needs for people’s home stay; this therefore drives the development of Taiwan's bed and breakfast (B&B) industry. In order to attract more potential customers, B&B owners have begun to build their B&B websites. Yet, many of the owners have not realized the importance how the websites can help for adm- inistering their B&B businesses, therefore the websites nowadays seem not able to exert the their significance in increasing tourists intention to stay. Based upon the model of Ahn et al., this study explores the website qualities, which includes information quality, system quality, and service quality, the perce- ived beliefs, trust and satisfaction to see their influence on consumers' two kinds of intentions (intention to stay and re-browsing intention). An online survey is conduct to those subjects who have experienced in browsing B&B websites before. A total of 505 returned data resulting in 420 valid samples. The findings show that service quality is the most influential factor to customers' perceived beliefs. As for the hypotheses for those perceived beliefs, trust, and satisfaction are all significant in influencing both the customers’ intention to stay and re-browsing intention; except the relationship between perceived ease of use and playfulness. The implications to academics and business are discussed.
