Introduction: During 2017, approximately 750,000 strokes occurred, of those approximately 140,000 people died from a stroke and <10% were also diagnosed with a hospital acquired condition. The economic burden associated with stroke care exceeds $34 billion; and hospitalizations with a hospital acquired condition increase costs. In the United States, differences in health outcomes have been documented; however, these studies show that sociodemographic differences continue to exist. The objectives of this study are to assess differences in clinical outcomes among the study population, and to assess if there are differences hospital charges.

Methods: To investigate differences in outcomes and hospital charges among the study population, the 2001-2011 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was used. Hospitalizations that occurred with a primary diagnosis of an ischemic stroke and a subsequent diagnosis of a hospital acquired condition were queried using ICD-9 codes. Additionally, the Elixhauser comorbidity index was used to identify comorbid conditions among individuals hospitalized. To assess the differences in outcomes and hospital charges chi-square, logistic regression, and hierarchical multilevel modeling procedures were used. All statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.4.

Results: The overall death rate has decreased among the study population; however, racial/ethnic differences exist in patient outcomes. When assessing hospital charges, hospitalizations that occurred in the Southern region of the United States were higher than hospitalizations that occurred in the Northwest region of the United States.

Conclusion: Further analysis needs to be conducted to assess sociodemographic differences in clinical outcomes among the study population. There is a need to continue to identify sociodemographic groups with risks of mortality to better guide the funding opportunities to target these resources to populations that experience the worse health outcomes. Future studies should also assess the role of mental health, cultural competency, and care coordination to improve patient outcomes.

The role of agriculture in the economy and society remains relevant as the industry provides 11% of employment and affordable access to healthy food which promote health and wellbeing. However, without adequate agricultural literacy, individuals may not be able to make safe and healthy food choices. To explore the level of agricultural literacy of college students, a 43-item questionnaire was developed and will be administered at a Liberal Arts University in the Southeastern United States. The aim of the study is to determine agricultural literacy scores and the importance of agricultural practices among college students who are not and will not be enrolled in agricultural courses and who do not plan to pursue a career in agriculture. Data collected will be examined to determine whether agricultural literacy is related to the importance of agricultural practices and whether relationships between demographic characteristics and agricultural literacy scores are present

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have historically been given less funding than White institutions, a known discrepancy partially rectified by the Civil Rights era desegregation lawsuits. The court-ordered funding, however, came with race-based restrictions for public HBCUs, and many lost academic programs to traditionally White institutions. In numerous situations, Black colleges were closed outright or merged with White institutions. The following study explores the unique case of an HBCU coerced into merging an academic unit with a neighboring historically White university. Using archival data and interviews from the HBCU administrators, the case study presents a narrative of how the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University – Florida State University partnership was formed, explores the partnership’s development over time, and examines differences between the mission and practices of the joint venture from FAMU’s perspective.

The transition to college offers students the chance to explore, experiment with, and eventually begin to solidify their identities (Boyd, Hunt, Kandell, & Lucas, 2003), but for students from agricultural backgrounds, leaving home to head to a more urban area for college constitutes a threat to identity (Breakwell, 1986; Cicognani, Menezes, & Nata, 2011; Proshanksy, 1978). Although education research concerning rural students is plentiful (e.g., Antos, 1999; Donehower, Hogg, & Schell, 2012; Durham & Smith, 2006; Lester, 2012), research specific to agrarian students is sparse (e.g., Dees, 2006). The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to explore and describe the experiences of students from agricultural backgrounds as they transitioned to college and how the transition impacted self-perceived identity. In particular, this study inquired into the difficulties and successes faced by study participants, as well as strategies used for coping with the transition from their agrarian homes to their more urban university setting. Four male and four female participants attended a university situated in the Midwest and majored in agricultural education. These university participants were invited to complete two qualitative interviews, submit photographs they felt represented their home and school lives, invite the researcher to observe any facet of their university experience, and submit the most meaningful assignment completed in college. Additionally, three male and two female high school students anticipating the transition to college were interviewed about their perceptions of the upcoming transition. Analysis of research data revealed that participant identities were impacted by the transition to college, their agrarian backgrounds, and their university experiences. Twenty-three distinct codes emerged from the data and were further categorized into six patterns: merging worlds, differences and tensions, “it’s in my blood,” continuing educational legacy/impact, finding self-identity, and can I go home? This study’s results highlighted, first and foremost, the need for universities to keep statistics on rural student enrollment. Additionally, this study emphasized the need for teachers, advisors, and counselors to be mindful of students’ backgrounds and future plans. Finally, this study demonstrated the importance of exposure to more urban areas and educational opportunities for easing the transition to college in students from agricultural backgrounds.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of and improve the recruitment efforts of The College of Agricultural Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This study surveyed a group of freshmen and first-year transfer students enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences (COAS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) in the fall of 2016 on why they chose to attend, and what factors were considered when making their choice. 184 students were sent surveys and a total of 62 students completed the survey, giving a response rate of 34%. The instrument contained a 21 item questionnaire, with responses of both open and close ended items. The survey found that the reputation of the COAS, as well as the faculty and staff’s dedication of welcoming and assisting (potential students) were identified as the most influential factors in a student choosing to attend the COAS. It was found that parents, followed closely by high school agriculture teachers, held the greatest influence in prospective students' college choice process. Other results show why the students selected and enrolled were due to the affordability of the COAS, scholarships, and the specific programs that were offered. Noting these results, the COAS would be able to continue to increase enrollment numbers.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of recruitment efforts used in the College of Agricultural Sciences (COAS) on students enrolled in the College. The study focused on different attributes of why students enrolled in the agriculture programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). University of Illinois, Western Illinois University, and Illinois State University data was also included in this study. The data used in this study were obtained from current students in the agriculture programs at SIUC and the data for enrollment, tuition and fees, and degrees conferred was obtained from Illinois Board of Higher Education. Graphs and tables were used to organize the data to show significant changes and trends among the universities and student responses to surveys. A least squares regression model was also used to analyze effects of different factors on COAS enrollment. It was found that recruitment efforts at the COAS need to be evaluated to better focus recruitment spending. Analysis of a mass mailing effort shows that over $26,819.13 has been spent in two years with minimal increases to enrollment of the COAS. Other results show the top three factors surveyed from freshman enrolled in the COAS on why they enrolled were programs, cost, and location. Compared to enrollment and degrees conferred of other agriculture programs in the state, the COAS should be capable of substantially increasing enrollment.

In 2010, an Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) study (Crawford, 2010) found that the agricultural industry representatives, Land Grant University alumni, and government employees look for certain skillsets (e.g., communication, leadership) in prospective employees. With the U.S economy recovering from a major economic recession, a greater number of new UA graduates with undergraduate degrees from CALS have cause to be concerned about their overall workforce competitiveness. Crawford's 2010 study examined which soft skills students should possess in order to be deemed hirable by the agriculture industry. Building off of Crawford's research, the current study involves a needs assessment that examines how students perceive 21st century workplace competencies. Specifically, this study will explore and describe the level of perceived importance and ability of 2015 UA CALS students graduating with baccalaureate degrees specific to 21st century workplace soft skill sets. Such identification of needs gaps will lead to greater understanding of the connection between industry demands, higher education institutions, and undergraduate students. The current research required the generation of data capable of leading to insights into the current development needs of undergraduate students in the agriculture and life sciences disciplines specific to 21st century workplace competencies. Student perceptions of such competencies were measured first according to perceived importance, and then perceived ability (Borich, 1980). This descriptive research gathered information from participants with the goal of measuring, summarizing and generalizing among the study's target population (Ary et al., 2010). The results suggest which competencies UA CALS undergraduate students perceive to be important and how they perceive their own abilities within each competency. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data relevant to each of the four research objectives framing this study. In particular, measures of central tendency and variability were used to assess the perceived levels of importance and ability subjects placed on individual competencies. To describe the professional development needs of CALS students in the seven constructs that together categorize 21st century workplace competencies as a whole (professionalism, team, leadership, decision making/ problem solving, experiences, communication, and self-management), mean weighted discrepancy scores (MWDS) were used to analyze the need for the competencies. Borich's needs assessment model was used to reveal the areas of highest training priority as determined by the MWDS.A web based questionnaire with multiple points of contact yielded 61 respondents with diverse backgrounds (e.g., transfer status, geographical background, major fields of study, co-/extra-curricular involvement) from across the college. Of the 52 competencies included within the seven competency categories, 16 had an MWDS that was prioritized as a tier I professional development need, which is of the highest priority. Of the remaining competencies, 20 of them had MWDS's that indicated tier II priority level set for professional development need. Lastly, there were 23 competencies that had MWDS's that indicated tier III priority level set for professional development need, which is the lowest priority level. Recommendations for curricular innovation to better foster student development in the context of the 21st century workplace are provided.

HAVEN FOR ALL HUNGRY SOULS: THE INFLUENCE OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS ON MORRIS BROWN COLLEGE By Serena Celeste Wilson Morris Brown College is a small, private historically Black college located near downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The College is the only post-secondary institution in Georgia founded by Blacks for the purpose of educating Blacks. The relationship between Morris Brown College, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools presents an untapped area of research regarding the how external regulatory and fiscal contributing bodies influence the internal mission, culture and management of an institution of higher education. Morris Brown College presents a unique case because, since its founding, it has maintained a close affiliation with the Church that established it. Yet, in recent years, its financial existence has been dependent upon the receipt and use of public funding—which is intricately tied to accrediting standards and oversight. In 2003 the College lost its accreditation. This study employs an ethnographic case-study qualitative research design to explore how the College’s relationship with these bodies influenced the institution’s organizational structure, fiscal management, and administrative culture and identity. The study’s findings indicate that the College’s relationship with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools was largely reflective of the values, ideals, and perspectives of who represented the College at any given time. The College’s relationship with its founding body, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was primarily maintained through the placement of Church members (largely clergy) on the College’s board of trustees, and evidenced in the College’s ideology and mission. Although an autonomous operating body, the College’s relationships with these two bodies are complicated by the institution’s reliance on continued financial support from the Church, and validation (in the form of accreditation) from SACS. While healthy working relationships with both bodies are not mutually exclusive, the internal planning, governance, and evaluation of the College must necessarily consider the values and expectations of these (and other) external entities.

Introduction: A trip was taken from July 3 to July 17, 1985 to Sudan to study the El Obeid compartmented reservoir system. This system supplies most of the domestic water for the city of El Obeid which has a population of 200,000 to 250,000 people. This water supply was exhausted in March of 1985 and the town was out of water until the monsoon rains began July 2, 1985. Approximately one week was spent in El Obeid and Kadugli. The remainder of the time was spent in Khartoum where the IBM PC was used. Some time was also spent in Khartoum in obtaining flattened ceramic spheres for evaporation control.

Climate change is currently threatening the livelihoods of farmers in developing countries. Psychological models have been developed to identify factors associated with adapting to climate change; however, little work has investigated the role of farmers’ risk attitudes in these models. We assessed perceptions of adaptation cost and adaptation intentions for five drought- specific adaptive behaviors among 550 farmers from 12 villages in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, as well as their attitudes toward risk. Results suggest that perceived adaptation cost and risk attitude are negatively associated with adaptation intentions. The conditional effect of adaptation cost on adaptation intention as a function of risk attitude was also investigated. Results showed that only farmers with risk averse attitudes were impacted by their perceptions of adaptation costs. These findings have implications for those interested in increasing adaptive practices of farmers in developing countries who face increasingly scarce water supplies.

Ovariohysterectomy and castration are common surgical procedures in small animal practice that can result in clinically significant postoperative pain. One way of controlling postoperative pain is administration of a single analgesic or a combination of different classes of analgesics prior to the onset of noxious stimuli. A constraint to the perioperative use of traditional opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is their undesirable side effects. In this series of experiments, the preventive (pre-emptive) analgesic efficacy of two popular human analgesics, tramadol (an ?atypical? opioid) and parecoxib (a NSAID with selective COX-2 inhibition) was evaluated in dogs. Initially, the efficacy and renal safety of parecoxib, tramadol and a combination of parecoxib, tramadol and pindolol (a -adrenoceptor blocker and 5-HT1A/1B antagonist) were screened in anaesthetised healthy dogs. These analgesics increased the dogs? nociceptive threshold to mechanical stimuli, without causing significant alterations in the dogs? glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimated by plasma iohexol clearance. Subsequently, the efficacy of tramadol was compared with morphine, in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy or castration. The Glasgow composite measure pain scale-short form score (CMPS-SF) and changes in intraoperative electroencephalogram (EEG) responses were used to assess the efficacy of analgesics. Of the three treatment groups (preoperative morphine, 0.5 mg kg-1; preoperative tramadol, 3 mg kg-1; a ?combination? of preoperative low-dose morphine, 0.1 mg kg-1, and postoperative tramadol 3 mg kg-1), dogs given the ?combination? had significantly lower pain scores after ovariohysterectomy. In castrated dogs, preoperative tramadol (3 mg kg-1) and morphine (0.5 mg kg-1) were tested and no significant difference in the CMPS-SF score were observed between them. Changes in EEG variables were not specific between the treatment groups in ovariohysterectomised dogs. Finally, the efficacy of test drugs was evaluated against acute noxious electrical stimulation in anaesthetised dogs, using EEG. Median frequency of the EEG, a reliable indicator of nociception, increased significantly in tramadol and parecoxib groups, compared to morphine, after electrical stimulation. These studies demonstrated that tramadol and parecoxib can produce analgesia in dogs with insignificant side effects. The efficacy of tramadol appears to vary with the type of noxious stimulus. A complete prevention of noxious input by administration of analgesics pre- and post-operatively could have important clinical applications.

Este estudo analisa o Ensino Superior Agrícola Brasileiro – ESAB, como “campo” (Bourdieu, 1983a), diante do cenário do mundo cambiante em que vivemos, com os seguintes objetivos: (i) resgatar parte da história, destacando dois momentos de inflexão vividos pelo ESAB: o primeiro a partir da década de 1960, quando, dentro do projeto urbano-industrialista, foram lançadas as bases do conhecimento e das estruturas acadêmicas (ainda hegemônicos) para a “modernização da agricultura”. O segundo na virada do Século XX, quando existe uma multiplicidade de propostas e não há mais um modelo a ser copiado; (ii) sugerir alguns dos caminhos possíveis e suas implicações para as instituições do ESAB, que pretendam encontrar novo sentido social no seu trabalho; (iii) analisar a influência das Universidades Norte-americanas no ESAB, tendo em vista sua importância no período de 60 e como essa influência se manifesta no segundo momento. Um “college” norte-americano (College of Agricultural and Environmental Science da University of California – Davis) e uma faculdade brasileira (Faculdade de Agronomia da UFRGS) foram escolhidos, como centros de formação e de pesquisa importantes e com participação destacada nos intercâmbios bilaterais. Essas instituições servem como testemunhas exemplares da dinâmica geral. Em ambas foram realizadas investigações e foram ouvidos atores destacados (professores-pesquisadores), através de questionários e entrevistas ao vivo Nas duas universidades os professores mostraram-se conscientes sobre as mudanças em curso, mas na UFRGS parece que o debate está menos desenvolvido. Diante das tendências que se apresentam, a Agricultura Sustentável e a Biotecnologia foram eleitas como pólos aglutinadores de diferentes projetos em disputa no início do Milênio. O estudo conclui que ou as escolas de agronomia se modificam ou não se justificam e também que, as mudanças podem ou não se vincular à busca de uma ruptura paradigmática (Santos, 1997). Conclui ainda, que seria importante cada instituição explicitar sua proposta, mesmo que esta seja de convivência entre os diferentes projetos. Finalmente opina que, Agricultura Sustentável parece ser estrategicamente mais interessante; tendo em vista ser mais adequada à realidade social e ambiental do Brasil.

This thesis focuses on how the Agricultural Practicum of Kaohsiung First Community University builds up its social network. The major research method employed is semi-structured interviews with some core members participating in initiating the community university, involving as staff and/or students. My participatory observation helps work out a coherent and holistic view for me to obtain a better understanding of activities of Kaohsiung First Community University and the building of social network thereof. The Agricultural Practicum of Kaohsiung First Community University is characterized with its efforts to organize and promote the farming course, the practice in the field and the market of the home-grown organic agricultural products. This way, the members of the farming course form a network of their own to acquire the basic know-how in farming and, more importantly, to strengthen their teamwork and social network. That is to say, the Agricultural Practicum of Kaohsiung First Community University not only provides the farming courses but also helps establish the social relationship between the staff and/or students. However, the building of social network, in this case, comes across some problems when too many people take part in this teaching/farming program. My research concern is to outline the way the social network builds in this Community University and to see why and how it becomes dysfunctional.

This study aimed to compare and analysis of the academic performances of technological university students from different types of college admission, including examination and placement, recommendation and screening, special achievement-based admission (including special achievement and screening-based admission), application of high school.   Based on literature review, this study conducted a secondary data analysis of 489 students’ academic performances from 8 departments of Agriculture College. The data were classified into three categories of courses: required subject, elective subject and overall courses. The SPSS 20 statistical software was applied to analyze data for descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA to compare and analysis of the academic performances of students from different types of college admission. The findings were as follows: 1. In terms of the whole Agricultural College, students admitted from application of high school have better academic achievements in different subjects than students from the other types of college admission. 2. In general, the students admitted from recommendation and screening performed better in the required subjects and the overall subjects than the students from four-year technology college’s joint registration and placement. 3. In Department of Plant Industry, Department of Aquaculture, Department of Wood Science and Department of Design, there were statistically significant differences in academic performances between students from different types of college admission 4. In the Department of Forestry, Department of Biological Science and Technology, Department of Animal Science, Department of Plant Medicine and Department of Food Science, there were no statistically significant differences in academic performances of overall courses between students from different types of college admission. 5. In Department of Wood Science and Design, students from application of high school had lower grades than students from recommendation and screening.   In Department of Animal Science, students from recommendation and screening based admission earned the lowest scores in the overall courses than students from the other types of college admission.   In conclusion, there is statistically significant difference between the academic performances of students at agricultural college from different types of college admission. The findings can contribute to improve students’ academic performance by creating more supportive programs of curriculum planning, study guidance and student recruitment.

VSR Dukkipati (2007). A search for genetic factors influencing immune responses to Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis. Doctoral thesis, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. A study was conducted to identify associations between genetic markers and immune responses in Australian fine-wool Merino sheep to a killed Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) vaccine (GudairTM). Blood samples and immune response data (antibody and interferon gamma, IFN-gamma results) were obtained from 934 sheep from a longterm Map vaccination trial undertaken on three independent properties in New South Wales, Australia. Blood samples were genotyped for eight microsatellite markers that included four (DYMS1, OLADRW, OLADRB and SMHCC1) from the Ovar-Mhc region, two each from the SLC11A1 (OVINRA1 and OVINRA2) and IFN-gamma (o(IFN)gamma and OarKP6) gene regions. Vaccination with GudairTM induced strong antibody and IFN-gamma responses as early as two weeks post-vaccination. Between-property differences in magnitude and trend of immune responses, concomitant with season of vaccination and magnitude of natural infection prevalent in individual flocks, were evident. Immune responses in controls on all the three properties remained consistently low, except for slightly elevated IFN-gamma levels at a few time points in controls of properties 2 and 3, concomitant with exposure to natural infection. There were only 2 alleles and 3 genotypes for marker o(IFN)gamma but other loci exhibited extensive polymorphisms, the most occurring at OLADRW which had 42 alleles and 137 genotypes. Heterozygosities varied between 33% (OVINRA2) and 87% (SMHCC1), while polymorphic information contents ranged from 0.31 (o(IFN)gamma) to 0.88 (OLADRW). Genotypes at loci DYMS1, OLADRB, SMHCC1, OVINRA1 and o(IFN)gamma were in Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), while those at OarKP6 were in HWE only when rare alleles (<1.0% frequency) were pooled with the closest size class. Departure from HWE, resulting from possible preferential amplification of alleles in heterozygotes, was evident at OLADRW and OVINRA2. Associations between immune responses and genetic polymorphisms at the marker loci were examined by analysing both genotypic and allelic affects. The study revealed several genotypes/alleles at different marker loci to be significantly associated with antibody and IFN-gamma responses to vaccination with GudairTM. However, the majority of those effects were inconsistent across the three properties. Based on significance and consistency in effects across the three properties, five genotypes (two at DYMS1 and one each at OLADRB, SMHCC1 and OVINRA1) and three alleles (one each at DYMS1, OLADRB and o(IFN)gamma) were considered either ‘probable’ or ‘most likely’ to be associated with low IFN-gamma responses, while a genotype at o(IFN)gamma was considered ‘most likely’ to influence high IFN-gamma responses. An allele at OarKP6 was considered ‘probable’ to be associated with low antibody responses to vaccination. Considering the significance of IFN-gamma responses in protection against Map, it is likely that the identified genotype/alleles influencing IFN-gamma responses to vaccination would also influence immune responses to natural Map infections. However, further studies need to be conducted to determine the role of these marker genotypes/alleles in protection against paratuberculosis under natural infection conditions.
