This practice-led research investigates late nineteenth-century Romantic performing practice with special reference to the Brahms violin sonatas. It is conducted with the aim of understanding the composer’s expectations, which lie behind the notation on the score. In the nineteenth century, performers used to approach notation in a much more liberal and musically inspired way, whereas our current approach tends to be constrained by a reliance on literal accuracy (i.e. keeping note values, articulations, dynamics, and other performing instructions on the score very strictly) as representing ‘the composer’s intentions’. The nineteenth- and early twentieth-century treatises and early twentieth-century recordings confirm that portamento, vibrato, tempo rubato, tempo and rhythmic modifications, arpeggiation, and dislocation were expressive performing techniques often used by performers in the late nineteenth century. These interpretative elements are only partially notated or completely omitted from the score, which means performers consciously or unconsciously following a modern notion of ‘faithfulness to the score’ may not be able to discern the composer’s expectations as they exist behind the notation, especially in relation to Romantic repertoire. This research demonstrates how expressive performing techniques of the nineteenth century may be the subject of experiments and later internalised by a performer emerging from the modern tradition, and how this information may contribute to understanding hidden messages behind Brahms’s notation. The process behind this research involves exploring late nineteenth-century expressive resources more closely by imitating selected early twentieth-century recordings. Chapter One discusses the research context including research questions and methodology. Chapter Two contains extensive investigations into the nineteenth-century expressive resources such as portamento, vibrato, and tempo rubato based on early recordings. Chapter Three presents the application of the accumulated experiences and insights gained from practical experimentation with early recordings and other historical sources to Brahms’s Violin Sonatas, for which there are no relevant early recorded examples. This research is not intended to provide definite interpretative ideas in relation to the Brahms violin sonatas. It is ultimately conceived as an example of how modern performers might utilise historical knowledge, including ideas about how the composer’s expectations may be recognised, and also as an encouragement to engage with historical practices in a more varied, interesting, and creative modern context. This thesis includes two CDs containing my imitations of early recordings and independent interpretations of Brahms’s Violin Sonatas, which were produced as an indispensable part of this research.

Performing Brahms: Rediscovering expressive devices in the sonatas for violin and piano This submission for the degree of Master of Philosophy in musical performance at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, consists ofa portfolio of two CDs containing recorded performances of the complete Sonatas for Violin and Piano of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) accompanied by an explanatory exegesis. These works are some of the most performed and recorded in the repertoire, however modem performance practice has been influenced by over a century of changing styles and tastes in violin playing. This project is an investigation into how a modem-day performance can reflect Brahms' original intentions for these works, drawing from the recently published Barenreiter Edition (2015/16) by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa. Nineteenth-century expressive devices used by Brahms and his circle have been identified including tone and bowing, vibrato, portamento, rhythmic flexibility and tempo modification and these techniques have been attempted to be integrated into the recorded performances. Discussion outlining Brahms' musical notation and its performance implications has been included, as well as a commentary describing the challenges of assimilating these devices and the resulting effectiveness in performance. The recorded performances contain the three Sonatas for Violin and Piano, the Sonata Movement in C minor from the F.A.E. Sonata, and the two neglected Violin Sonatas op. 120 originally for clarinet/viola, rewritten by Brahms, which are seldom performed today.

This thesis deals in particular with the pianist's approach to the Brahms Sonata for Piano and Violin in D Minor, Opus 108. There are two chapters, the first of which takes the form of a bibliography in which different theoretical aspects for consideration in the learning of the work are presented. One of the sections in the first chapter which is entitled The Pianist, should prove helpful to a prospective piano teacher, as well as a student of the Brahms Sonata in D Minor, Opus 10 8. In this section sources presenting different solutions to technical problems which the pianist is likely to encounter both generally, and specifically with regard to this Sonata, are listed. The other sections in this chapter include a discography and comments concerning recordings of the Sonata in D Minor, Opus 108, which a student of this work and its composer may consult. The second chapter of the thesis deals with specific issues involved in the interpretation based on my performance of the Sonata in D Minor, Opus 108, for the practical examination. Three other possible interpretations by well-known pianists are briefly evaluated. Attached to the thesis is a cassette tape on which recommendations for the practising of certain passages may be heard.

The music style of Brahms is full of diversity. As a composer in late Romanticism period, he also advocates the traditional style of German music, while at the same time he adopts folksong or his songs as composing materials. In addition to the characteristics of Romanticism, his possesses unique style which is demonstrated in the rhythm and theme development. These facts make his music difficult for some performers and music learners. Accordingly, this thesis attempts to adopt document research and comparison analysis to study and analyze Brahms' Violin Sonata No.1. This thesis contains six chapters. The first chapter is a preface, which mainly states the motivation, methodology and scope of the research. The second chapter is a brief introduction to Brahms' chamber music in chronological order. Chapter Three serves as a linkage between Violin Sonata No.1 and a Lied. This chapter analyzes the connection between these two pieces of work. Chapter Four explores the composing techniques of Violin Sonata No.1, with a focus on rhythm alternation and variation development. Chapter Five interprets Violin Sonata No.1 and looks into its violin performing techniques. This chapter studies the performing techniques of both right and left hands. Suggestions are made as well. Through the analysis and research on Brahms' chamber music, lieder, composing techniques and interpretations, it is concluded that a composer's music can be better expressed with the understanding of the background, characteristics and spirit of the music.

The violin sonata was composed by the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1877-1879. This music was composed in his later period, and it was also one of his representative chamber music. The violin sonata had three movements. The Construction of Musical form was very clear, and its character was shown by the rich harmonies, colorful voices, and continuously cantabile melodies. This violin sonata is one of the classical works which violin performers must learn, and I will discuss on the challenges and varieties for the performers to face and to make between music analysis and interpretation experiment on this dissertation, in order to express its unique value of the arts through analysis, to match the composer’s thoughts in interpretation, and also to express my personal style in performance.

There are only three violin sonatas recorded and published in Brahm's life. This these is trying to discuss about the latese of three violin sonatas but the composition of the music is the most gigantic –namely, the Piano and Violin Sonata No. 3 Op. 108 in D Minor. In order to realize the background of this sonata and know the composition stle of Brahms intially, the writer especially wrote chapter two to explore. Via comparing and analyzing three violin sonatas, you could find that the Brahm's composition style is classicism actually, however, he was the person in romanticism. Concerned the work annotation, except for the chapter three, the writer also made comparison of partial sound data and version of Bram's music in chapter four, too. Based on the above data and combined the writer impression of the melody, and therefore the writer arrived a conclusion to made the work annotation eventually.

Compared with the previous romantic Viennese classical music music, focusing on the emotional and expressive and less formality and structure requirements, in the early 19th century, the gradual rise of romanticism, many composers and music-based title focus on individualism, but Brahms (Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897) with the dedication of classical traditional style, the works of bits used in musical form and technique on the use of the classical period of music, rich harmonies in the song development and rhythmic dislocation intertwined, making this piece develops romantic feelings in the classical form, and with Beethoven and Bach par, became famous in the history of music "3B", his work is full of emotion and plenty of unique content, although lack of work looks gorgeous, but hidden in the emotion and energy of the music which is quite intriguing and worth savoring.

German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is one the most important Romantic composers. Influenced by the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld (1856-1907), his Viola Sonata in F minor, Op. 120, No. 1 was adapted from his late work Clarinet Sonata in F minor, Op. 120, No. 1, and later became important in viola repertoire. Written in 1894, the two Op. 120 Sonatas, in F minor and E Flat major respectively, were premiered by the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld in Vienna in 1895. My impressions of the work are passionate feelings and pastoral atmosphere. I’m especially interested in the fluent dialogues between solo and piano and the richness of Brahms’ use of harmony and counterpoint. Based on the historical background and the structure of music, I attempt in-depth analysis of this work in order to gain enough knowledge for optimal interpretation.

The research topic of this thesis is based on the Brahms Sonata for Piano and Viola Op.120 No.1, Mvt. I. As Brahms’ personality, the music structure of this sonata is exceedingly rigorous. In the composition, we can perceive the composer’s introverted character from his favorite tone color. Firstly, the research starts with Brahms’ background and his life. By analyzing and interpreting the sonata, we can learn how Brahms used a strict music form to express the thoughts in his inner world. In the third chapter, there is an analysis of the theme, motivation and musical form of this composition. Besides, there is a study probing into the playing expression, tension, interpretation and musical skills. Furthermore, being a player, the author in-depth does a research on playing skills of Brahms Sonata for Piano and Viola Op.120 No.1, expecting to perform the closest interpretation of Brahms’ emotions. Therefore, when playing Brahms’ works, in addition to knowing very well about the creative approaches and overcoming the playing skills, it is more important for a player to present the musical content. Last but not the least, this thesis concludes various studies and summarizes all aspects of information, consolidating this research.

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote a brand new composing concept, Violin Sonata No.2 in A major op. 100, in 1886. His work is deeply influenced and inspired by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) and L.V. Beethoven (1770-1827), with a rigorous classical structure, combined with the romantic feelings of the 19th century. This paper explores the uniqueness of Brahms' composition techniques. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, which contains research motives, methods, and purposes. The second chapter is an evaluation of Brahms, which contains a basic overview of Brahms' significant violin works and the explanation on the background of Violin Sonata No.2 in A major op.100. The third chapter analyzes the music, which details the basic structure of the whole work with the theme of the music and the harmony structure. The fourth chapter is the performance technique and the interpretation of the music, along with the three movements and focuses on the method and interpretation and performing part . The fifth and final chapter is the conclusion, which is an integration and induction of the research.

Johannes Brahms was one of the most prominent German composers in the nineteenth-century. He often innovated the ideas from the classical era in his music. Although he followed the seventeenth-century's counterpoint technique and eighteenth-century's rigorous structure of musical form, he also integrated the harmonic color and texture from the nineteenth-century. He wrote symphonies, piano work, vocal work and chamber music at various stages of his life, only chamber music was written throughout his life. He was an excellent pianist, so the piano in his music occupies an important role. Besides the harmonic texture, rhythmic is also an important element in his work, therefore this paper would like to look into the rhythmic structure of the first movement from his Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, Op. 100, No. 2 from different aspects.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is one of the outstanding German composers in 19th century. Symphonies, songs, piano pieces and chamber works are the most representative works in his creations. The Sonata, Opus 120, No.2 is the last chamber music work in his life. It is for clarinet and piano originally. Brahms later revised it into viola and piano version by himself, and left the piano part untouched. Later he arranged for violin version, and modified some tones at the piano part for violin’s register. This thesis will discuss the following topics: the background and historical introduction of 19th century, the features of Brahms’ chamber music style and his life, the creation background and interpretation discussion of the Sonata, Opus 120, No.2, and the discussion of score versions comparison according to Simrock’s three instruments editions. Through the process of writing this thesis, and with further study, I hope it could benefit for performing and interpreting this remarkable work.

The main purpose of this research thesis is to present an analysis on the Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 120 No.2 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), written in 1894. Originally written as sonata for clarinet and piano, Brahms wrote a transcription himself for viola and piano later. Although this is a work of the Late Romantic Period, its neat structure and conservative style show Brahms’ persistence of the tradition. There are five chapters in this study. The first chapter is an introduction that explains the motive, the purpose, the content, as well as the methods of the study. The second chapter is a brief statement about the biography and musical style of Brahms, and the background of the sonata. Chapter three and four include the explicit analysis of the piece, and provide the opinion and suggestion of the interpretation. The final chapter is the conclusion of the study.
