Abstract Despite extensive research efforts to explain the Mandarin Chinese particle le, confusion persists in the absence of a unitary theory and sufficient empirical evidence. This study provides a unitary account of le by adopting a usage-based constructionist approach, one that liberates grammatical aspect from, and is able to accommodate, lexical aspect. We argue that le participates in two distinct family resemblance constructions of aspect construal associated with two distinct sentential positions. The clause-internal le construction construes the closing or final boundary of an event and the clause-final le construction construes the opening or initial boundary of an event. Corpus analysis showed that the two aspect constructions have distinct patterns in natural language uses that are consistent with the proposed construals. Results from elicited response data showed that native speakers paid attention to construction-level formal and semantic cues in making family resemblance judgments about tokens of the two constructions. This study has both theoretical and methodological implications for crosslinguistic research on grammatical aspect in relation to lexical aspect and for usage-based constructionist approaches to grammatical categories beyond aspect.

Abstract: This study proposes a cross-linguistic, corpus-based, and constructionist analysis of denominal verbs (DNVs) in English, Dutch and German. DNV constructions include various morphological construction types, such as conversion (e.g. English bottle > to bottle), prefixation (e.g. Dutch arm ‘arm’ > omarmen ‘to embrace’) and suffixation (e.g. German Katapult ‘catapult’ > katapultieren ‘to catapult’). We investigate the correlation between the distribution of DNV constructions and the typological properties of the languages, focusing on boundary permeability, inflectional complexity, syntactic configurationality and word-class assignment. The study shows that, although the three languages have the same repertoire of DNV constructions at their disposal, a Germanic cline can be detected in their preferences for non-overt vs overt marking of the word-class change. As such, the study highlights the impact of typological factors on the shape of language-specific constructional networks.

We investigate a generalization of the equation curlw→=g→ to an arbitrary number n of dimensions, which is based on the well-known Moisil–Teodorescu differential operator. Explicit solutions are derived for a particular problem in bounded domains of Rn using classical operators from Clifford analysis. In the physically significant case n=3, two explicit solutions to the div-curl system in exterior domains of R3 are obtained following different constructions of hyper-conjugate harmonic pairs. One of the constructions hinges on the use of a radial integral operator introduced recently in the literature. An exterior Neumann boundary-value problem is considered for the div-curl system. That system is conveniently reduced to a Neumann boundary-value problem for the Laplace equation in exterior domains. Some results on its uniqueness and regularity are derived. Finally, some applications to the construction of solutions of the inhomogeneous Lamé–Navier equation in bounded and unbounded domains are discussed.

Анотація:

Technological processes in the energy sector and engineering require the calculation of temperature regime of functioning of different constructions. Mathematical model of thermal loading of constructions is reduced to a non-stationary initial-boundary value problem of thermal conductivity. The article examines the formulation of the non-stationary initial-boundary value problem of thermal conductivity in the form of a boundary integral equation, analyzes the singular equation and builds the fundamental solution. To build the integral representation of the solution the method of weighted residuals is used. The correctness of the obtained integral representation of the solution in Minkowski space is confirmed. Singularity of the fundamental solution is investigated. The boundary integral equation and fundamental solution for axially symmetric domain for internal problem is built. The results of the article can be useful for numerical implementation of boundary element method.

The main reasons for application are: weight and amount of material are reduced on minimum. Famous architects like Otto Frei created this new trend in architecture. In recent years it becomes possible to enlarge the family of minimal surfaces by constructing new surfaces.

SynopsisWe present several general methods of constructing tight hypersurfaces f: Mn → En+1, n ≧ 2. We prove a smoothing lemma, which allows us to approximate tight continuous hypersurfaces by C∞ tight ones. We show that given a tight immersion or C∞-stable map f: M2 → E3 of a compact surface M2 other than S2, there is a tight C∞-stable map g: M2 # RP2:→ E3. We prove that given C∞ tight immersions f: Mn → En+1 and g: Nn → En+1 of compact n-manifolds Mn and Nn into En+1, there is a tight C∞ immersion of Mn # Nn into En+1. Two other methods involve hypersurfaces of rotation and sets in En+1 at a fixed distance from a tightly embedded n-manifold with boundary in En. One consequence of these methods is that the outer part of C∞ tight hypersurfacesf: Mn → En+1, n ≧ 3, is far more complicated than in the case of tight surfaces in En. For example, given any C∞n-manifold M with boundary tightly embedded in En, there is a tight immersion f:Nn → En+1 of a closed n-manifold having M as a topset. Kuiper's theorem describing tight immersions of surfaces into E3 does not generalise to the case of hypersurfaces f: Mn → En+1, n ≧ 3, without substantial restrictions on Mn and/or f.

This article shows a method for determining the support reactions of rod architectural structures, the position of free nodes of which was previously obtained by discrete geometrical morphogenesis (shaping). At the same time, the order and principle of defining and forming all the necessary discrete data on the topological features of the model, its boundary conditions, external loads and the distribution of internal forces are considered. The algorithm is based on logical operations and matrix transformations.

In barrier building constructions the heat transfer occurs both at the expense of thermal conductivity and as a result of liquid and air vapors resistance. The mechanism of such resistance differs from classical processes of diffusion and the laws of hydrodynamics for integral medium.The temperature mode of the surface and deep layers of barrier building constructions in non-symmetric boundary conditions was analyzed. A mathematical model was developed that characterizes the change in the thermal state of barrier constructions during thermal diffusion. The method for calculating the non-stationary thermal modes of flat walls was presented.

Анотація:

A numerical algorithm for solving initial-boundary value problems with nonlinear boundary conditions was developed and implemented. The algorithm is constructed with reference to modeling of oscillations of an elastically supported deformable rod with limit stops at the ends under the action of a moving variable force. Such a rod is the design scheme of a number of building structures, including the span structure of a floating bridge of continuous system with limiting rigid supports at the ends. Chebyshev's polynomials were used to improve the computational schemes for realizing the practical problems of modeling constructive-nonlinear oscillations of building structures. The solution does not lose stability for large values of the elasticity coefficients of elastic couplings. Using the developed approach, it is possible to perform virtual computing experiments to skip a variety of movable loads on the floating bridge to analyze its deformed state and to make well-grounded design decisions.

Анотація:

The existence theorem is proved within the framework of the shear model by S.P. Timoshenko. The stress-strain state of elastic inhomogeneous isotropic shallow thin-walled shell constructions is studied. The stress-strain state of shell constructions is described by a system of the five equilibrium equations and by the five static boundary conditions with respect to generalized displacements. The aim of the work is to find generalized displacements from a system of equilibrium equations that satisfy given static boundary conditions. The research is based on integral representations for generalized displacements containing arbitrary holomorphic functions. Holomorphic functions are found so that the generalized displacements should satisfy five static boundary conditions. The integral representations constructed this way allow to obtain a nonlinear operator equation. The solvability of the nonlinear equation is established with the use of contraction mappings principle.

In the article, the local stress-strain state of structures and constructions is investigated, various variants for the design of the boundary are taken into account: special lines, points. The acting forced deformations don’t satisfy the compatibility conditions. They have a finite discontinuity along the contact line (surface) of the domains, including the irregular point of the boundary, causing stresses. The subject of article is stress concentrators the singularity of the stress-strain state of structures and constructions exhibiting “constructive heterogeneity” and discontinuous forced deformations determined on polymer models of photoelasticity and defrosting of deformations. A complex theoretical-numerical-experimental approach, for obtaining and analyzing the stress state in the neighborhood of the irregular point of the plane domain boundary, is proposed to extrapolate reliable experimental data to a domain where the fringe contour is not readable.

This paper analyses the interpretation of boundary-crossing events in second language acquisition (SLA) to determine whether L2 learners are able to select the target-like option for the interpretation of motion events or whether, on the contrary, their choice reflects cross-linguistic influence (CLI) of their L1. The two groups participating in the study – thirty Spanish learners of L2 English and sixteen English first language (L1) speakers – were subjected to an experiment involving an interpretation task with L2 boundary-crossing events pictures. Findings indicate that Spanish L2 learners selected three possible constructions (manner verb + path satellite, path in verb + manner in satellite and a combination of both) in clear contrast to English L1 speakers who only selected one construction (manner verb + path satellite). CLI has also been found to regulate the type of boundary-crossing event selected, primarily in cases of motion INTO a bounded space in the horizontal axis.

Window sill of brick walls is one of the most critical places in a connection of two envelope types objectively. If there are the transparent and opaque parts present together, the connection is much more complicated. Different behavior of the construction materials in dynamic boundary conditions causes deformations of thermal field of the window sill detail. Numerical thermal field analysis verified by the experimental measurement in experimental outdoor chambers is used for recognize the real heat-air-moisture behavior in the various constructions.

Abstract We respond to Rodríguez Arrizabalaga’s recent claim that Spanish shows genuine cases of strong resultative constructions, e.g. Juan apuñaló a Tomás hasta la muerte ‘John stabbed Tom to death’, argued to be equivalent to the English construction with the PP to death. This claim is theoretically relevant as it challenges the verb-framed behavior of Spanish with respect to Talmy’s typology. Adopting a constructivist view of argument structure, we argue that Spanish hasta la muerte and English to death constructions of this type involve two completely distinct syntactic configurations, and that only the English to death PP can be regarded as a resultative phrase. We claim that the Spanish hasta PP is syntactically computed as an adjunct external to the argument structure of the predicate and provides a boundary to the predicate it merges with. We thus show that the Spanish construction with hasta la muerte fully conforms to the class of Talmy’s verb-framed languages in that this type of construction is expected to be fully available and productive in this class of languages.

Here we construct different approximate solutions of the plane inverse boundary value problem of aerohydrodynamics. In order to do this we solve some conditional optimization problems in the norms∥·∥2,∥·∥∞, and ∥·∥1and some of their generalizations. We present the example clarifying the mathematical constructions and show that the supremum norm generalization seems to be the optimal one of all the functionals considered in the paper.

This can also be understood as the problem of boundary effects in the cell division procedure. It is known that the STIT tessellations are spatially consistent. In the present paper it is shown that, within a reasonable wide class of cell division processes, the STIT tessellations are the only ones that are consistent.

In this paper, we discuss a simple method for the numerical computation of Gramian matrices, that appears within the construction of multiresolution analysis on the interval. The presented approach covers all, the orthogonal, the semiorthogonal and the biorthogonal cases. We consider constructions, which are based on translates of a known pair of compactly supported functions ϕ,[Formula: see text] inside the interval, and supplemented by boundary functions. Using the given two-scale-coefficients of these boundary functions, we can reduce the problem to a linear system of equations. Furthermore, we discuss conditions providing that these systems are uniquely solvable. In particular, no integrals have to be computed numerically. Finally, using the Schoenberg spline basis on the interval as an example, we show how to apply the method to a well-known problem.

We give an alternative presentation of Khovanov homology of links. The original construction rests on the Kauffman bracket model for the Jones polynomial, and the generators for the complex are enhanced Kauffman states. Here we use an oriented sl(2) state model allowing a natural definition of the boundary operator as twisted action of morphisms belonging to a TQFT for trivalent graphs and surfaces. Functoriality in original Khovanov homology holds up to sign. Variants of Khovanov homology fixing functoriality were obtained by Clark–Morrison–Walker [7] and also by Caprau [6]. Our construction is similar to those variants. Here we work over integers, while the previous constructions were over gaussian integers.

Inspired by the construction of Sierpi?ski carpets, we introduce a new class of fractal sets. For a such fractal set K, we construct a Gromov hyperbolic space X (which is also a strongly hyperbolic space) and show that K is isometric to the Gromov hyperbolic boundary of X. Moreover, under some conditions, we show that Con(K) and X are roughly isometric, where Con(K) is the hyperbolic cone of K.

This paper addresses the problem of isolating light verb constructions (LVC) and classifying them according to semantic-syntactic parameters. LVC are firstly classified as a subtype of collocation. This step is important since it places the study of these constructions within a theoretical framework and defines the tests that are valid for their identification. Subsequently, on the basis of the reduction test (nominalization of the LVC and deletion of the verb), a boundary is traced between causative and non causative LVC on the one side and between base and extended LVC on the other side. Ultimately, a grid of semantic/aspectual criteria is proposed in order to distinguish different types of extended LVC. The application of this grid to Italian data allows a semantic classification of LVC based on a semantic decompositional analysis. This classification shows how it is possible to isolate different degrees in the function played by the verb in a LVC, according to its contribution to the semantic interpretation of the construction.

We generalise the notion of fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) to allow data sets of the form where I=[0,1]n. We introduce recurrent iterated function systems whose attractors G are graphs of continuous functions f:I→, which interpolate the data. We show that the proposed constructions generalise the previously existed ones on . We also present some relations between FIFs and the Laplace partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Finally, the fractal dimensions of a class of FIFs are derived and some methods for the construction of functions of class Cp using recurrent iterated function systems are presented.

AbstractThe Assouad dimension of a metric space determines its extremal scaling properties. The derived notion of the Assouad spectrum fixes relative scales by a scaling function to obtain interpolation behaviour between the quasi-Assouad and the box-counting dimensions. While the quasi-Assouad and Assouad dimensions often coincide, they generally differ in random constructions. In this paper we consider a generalised Assouad spectrum that interpolates between the quasi-Assouad and the Assouad dimension. For common models of random fractal sets, we obtain a dichotomy of its behaviour by finding a threshold function where the quasi-Assouad behaviour transitions to the Assouad dimension. This threshold can be considered a phase transition, and we compute the threshold for the Gromov boundary of Galton–Watson trees and one-variable random self-similar and self-affine constructions. We describe how the stochastically self-similar model can be derived from the Galton–Watson tree result.

AbstractIn this paper, we study the global regularity for regular Monge-Ampère type equations associated with semilinear Neumann boundary conditions. By establishing a priori estimates for second order derivatives, the classical solvability of the Neumann boundary value problem is proved under natural conditions. The techniques build upon the delicate and intricate treatment of the standard Monge-Ampère case by Lions, Trudinger, and Urbas in 1986 and the recent barrier constructions and second derivative bounds by Jiang, Trudinger, and Yang for the Dirichlet problem. We also consider more general oblique boundary value problems in the strictly regular case.

Building on the seminal work on grammar and frames (e.g. Fillmore 1982), in addition to recent studies that apply a construction grammar approach to the description of genres (Antonopoulou & Nikiforidou 2011; Nikiforidou 2010b; Östman 2005) and spoken discourse (Fischer 2011; Fried & Östman 2005), this paper highlights the importance of extending the analytical boundary of grammar to include interactional frames, e.g. genres and social interactions. Using as an illustrative case the stand-alone noun-modifying construction in Japanese, a grammatical construction that is genre-sensitive, this paper suggests that grammatical constructions and interactional frames are in partnership in the construction of meaning. It is argued that this partnership is mediated by the proficient language users’ knowledge, which is socially and culturally inculcated and fostered, and therefore it is important to keep the theoretical model flexible enough to acknowledge fluidity in grammatical understanding.

The notion of cosmopolitanism captures the duality of the global world. On one hand, it represents an inclusive orientation towards the cultural Other, while on the other, it has become a form of cultural capital that is owned by the global elite and frequently used to demarcate social distinctions. This article, based on ethnographic research in an international school in China, introduces the concretization of this paradox. The article shows how teachers and students in a gated school – in which local students, by Chinese law, were not permitted to study – used different practices to signify invented Chineseness as legitimate and non-legitimate. This process is explored by deciphering practices of boundary-making that produced a unique bubble. Based on three mechanisms of boundary-making and groupness, I show how a cultural process of identification and differentiation challenges previous empirical assumptions of selective boundaries in reference to the locale. Instead, the presence of ambiguous perceptions of Chinese locality in school suggest the existence of elastic, continuous and unfixed boundaries.

The purpose of the work is to substantiate methodological approaches for the development of scientific and technological recommendations for determining the optimal types of boundary markers for the establishment (consolidation) of the boundaries of administrative-territorial units. Method. Methods of historical analysis of constructions of boundary signs are used for researches, in particular: influence on constructions of boundary signs of natural and climatic conditions; requirements of land cadastres in different historical periods; research of interdependence of the centers of geodetic points and properties of soil on a choice of the centers of boundary signs. Results. An expanded nomenclature of types of boundary markers is proposed, which takes into account the properties of local soils through which the boundary of the administrative-territorial unit runs, and proposals for the selection of appropriate materials for the manufacture of boundary markers to increase their shelf life. This will allow more efficient management of land resources of administrative-territorial entities. The developed proposals can be reflected in land management projects to establish (change) the boundaries of administrative-territorial units, in particular in the description of their boundaries. Scientific novelty and practical significance. The analysis of the types of boundary markers in combination with the available information about the soils of Ukraine shows that when choosing their types do not take into account the properties of the soils of the area through which the boundary of the administrative-territorial unit. As a result, it is not possible to identify boundaries on the ground, which in turn leads to inconsistencies between the authorities and inefficient use of land resources. To solve this problem, it is proposed to use well-developed scientific, technical and regulatory developments on the use of different types of geodetic points, which take into account the depth of freezing and physical and mechanical properties of the soil; the presence of groundwater in places of laying and their chemical state; wetlands and, accordingly, on their basis to offer an expanded range of boundary markers. The proposed types of boundary markers can be used for the boundaries of OTG, districts, cities and areas that run on land.

This paper deals with the possessive constructions — either connective or relative — in Mbochi (C25), a Bantu language spoken in Congo-Brazzaville. In Mbochi, as in most languages of the same group (C20), the underlying /CV-/ form of nominal prefixes never surfaces as such but is targeted by two main processes: consonantal dissimilation and vowel elision. Both processes are in complementary distribution and the alternations triggered by them may explain the surface forms of both connective and relative constructions. In order to provide the necessary background for the study of Mbochi relative clauses, the three subject markers of Mbochi are introduced and the main verbal suffixes are also discussed. Thereafter, a detailed presentation and analysis of the relative constructions is given. Finally, we discuss the prosody of these constructions, showing that relative clauses in Mbochi have no particular tonal markers and we propose a model involving superimposed boundary tones to account for their intonation.

Studying the stress-deformed state of structures with complex-shaped boundary is an urgent task for designing and developing numerical and analytical methods of constructions, buildings and structures research. Stress concentration due to geometrically nonlinear shape of the boundaries – cutouts, notches, causes stress, deformation zones with significant magnitudes and gradients. Theoretical analysis of the boundary angle cutout domain stress-deformed state (SDS) under rupturing forced deformations comes down to studying singular solutions of elasticity theory homogeneous problem with power-type specifics. Novelty of the studies given herein is that the SDS in the vicinity of an irregular boundary point – the domain boundary angle cutout vertex, is characterized by stress limit values similar to stress intensity coefficients when applying force criteria in fracture mechanics. Asymptotics of elastic problem solution in the random opening boundary angle cutout domain is written using the stress limit values. Obtained asymptotic expression for elasticity theory plane problem solution allows to analyze the SDS of the domain boundary angle cutout zone as a function of the domain cutout opening angle, mechanical characteristics and eigenvalues of elasticity boundary-value problem in case of stresses homogeneous boundary conditions.

Abstract The article deals with the morphosyntactic features of the aspectual category of progressive in K’iche’an languages. The analysis is carried out using methods of intragenetic typology. It is proposed to clarify Vinogradov’s classification of progressive in the Mayan languages in relation to the K’iche’an group. Three types of K’iche’an progressive as well as three strategies for the distribution of ergative–absolutive markers in the progressive are proposed. The boundary between the uniclausal and biclausal analyses of complex aspect constructions in Mayan languages is proposed. The application to K’iche’an languages Robert Dixon’s generalization for aspectually based split ergativity is also described. Three strategies of verb argument marking in the progressive constructions are determined. It was found out that all aspectually conditioned splits in the ergative–absolutive strategy of argument marking in K’iche’an languages are observed in progressive (or historically progressive) constructions.

Abstract Genesis 36 contains a distinctively large and heterogeneous body of genealogical materials pertaining to Esau and the kingdom of Edom. The present study suggests that the chapter reached its unique shape as the result of a specifically Judahite discursive project. In particular, a scribe expanded a preexisting priestly genealogy of Esau in order to create a robust boundary between entities defined as Edom and Israel. New interpretations of archaeological evidence from southern Jordan and the Negev reveal the context of dynamic interaction and fluid identities that likely prompted this expansion. The resulting text rejects memories of affiliation between Negevite and south Jordanian peoples in order to elevate Judah’s claim to the name and identity of Israel.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of singularly perturbed equations in complex domains. The considered equations have a saddle point. The main goal is to prove the existence of boundary-layer lines, boundary-layer regions and regular, singular regions, identifying their features in comparison with previous studies. Harmonic functions and their level lines are involved in solving the set problem. Using the level line, geometric constructions are carried out. The area under consideration is divided into parts and integration paths are chosen that ensure the convergence of some functions with respect to a small parameter. Using the method of successive approximations, the existence and boundedness of the solution of the equation is proved. The features of the boundary lines are revealed.

The use of wood in the construction of bridges has increased in recent decades thanks to the characteristics of this material, i.e., environmentally-friendly and suitability within natural landscapes. Nevertheless, timber constructions may be affected by degrading effects due to biological and/or abiotic agents, and may be exposed to impacts or vibrations due to external forces such as wind, earthquakes or walking pedestrians. Consequently, bridge performance with respect to these aspects should be assessed from the early design stage. Within this context, in this study, some shape, structural and durability strategies dealing with the design of timber bridges for pedestrians are investigated in order to extend the service life of these constructions. More precisely, a methodology consisting of three steps, to be applied at the early conceptual design stage, is proposed. The three fundamental steps to be considered in the preliminary design of timber bridges are: (i) main boundary constraints and load-bearing system; (ii) durability; (iii) vibration levels. In the study, the presented methodology is applied and described for the design of a pedestrian and cyclist timber bridge over the Gravina torrent, in Apulia (Italy).

Анотація:

The work suggests the effective equation decomposition method (EDM) for solving of statics, vibrations and stability problems of thin-walled constructions. This method is based on the partition of the initial problem on the consideration of more simple auxiliary problems. The additional unknown functions are introduced for definition of the sought solutions. The paper shows the method’s advantages on the examples of the boundary value problems for rectangular areas. The problem of anisotropic plate resting on an elastic subgrade and subjected to an action of expanding forces acting in the middle surface and to transverse loads is under study. The plate’s edges are elastically supported. Also free vibrations of the rectangular plates of variable thickness with different boundary conditions were under consideration. The approximate analytical solutions with high exactness are obtained.
