Abstract Field observations and theoretical analysis are used to investigate the appearance of different nocturnal boundary layer regimes. Recent theoretical findings predict the appearance of two different regimes: the continuously turbulent (weakly stable) boundary layer and the relatively “quiet” (very stable) boundary layer. A large number of nights (approximately 4500 in total) are analyzed using an ensemble averaging technique. The observations support the existence of these two fundamentally different regimes: weakly stable (turbulent) nights rapidly reach a steady state (within 2–3 h). In contrast, very stable nights reach a steady state much later after a transition period (2–6 h). During this period turbulence is weak and nonstationary. To characterize the regime, a new parameter is introduced: the shear capacity. This parameter compares the actual shear after sunset with the minimum shear needed to sustain continuous turbulence. In turn, the minimum shear is dictated by the heat flux demand at the surface (net radiative cooling), so that the shear capacity combines flow information with knowledge of the boundary condition. It is shown that the shear capacity enables prediction of the flow regimes. The prognostic strength of this nondimensional parameter appears to outperform the traditional ones like the similarity parameter z/L and the gradient Richardson number Ri as a regime indicator.

AbstractWe derive new inequalities between the boundary capacity of an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and boundary quantities that relate to quasi-local mass; one relates to Brown–York mass and the other is new. We argue by recasting the setup to the study of mean-convex fill-ins with nonnegative scalar curvature and, in the process, we consider fill-ins with singular metrics, which may have independent interest. Among other things, our work yields new variational characterizations of Riemannian Schwarzschild manifolds and new comparison results for surfaces in them.

Evaluating the performance of beam-like structures in terms of their current boundary conditions, stiffness and modal properties can be challenging as the structures behave differently from their designed conditions due to aging. The purpose of the current study is to determine the flexural rigidity of beam-like structures when their support conditions are not fully understood. A novel optimization scheme is proposed for estimation of the flexural stiffness and the capacity of the beam-like structures under moving loads. The proposed method is applied to various profiles of the beams made of different materials with unknown boundary conditions, and the effects of damage, excitation and optimization algorithm are rigorously investigated. The results of the numerical and experimental studies showed that the proposed substructural bending rigidity identification (SBI) method can correctly assess the in-service flexural stiffness, fixity of the boundary condition and the load-carrying capacity. This technique can be considered as a cost-effective method for periodic monitoring, load rating and model updating of the beam-like structures.

The latest version of the Standard for Structural Calculation of Reinforced Concrete Structures, published by the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2010 [1], allows the design of shear walls with rectangular cross sections in addition to shear walls with boundary columns at the end regions (referred to here as “barbell shape”). In recent earthquakes, several reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls were damaged by flexural failures through concrete compression crushing accompanied with buckling of longitudinal reinforcement in the boundary areas. Damage levels have clearly been shown to be related to drift in structures; this is why drift limits are in place for structural design criteria. A crucial step in designing a structure to accommodate these drift limits is to model the ultimate drift capacity. Thus, in order to reduce damage from this failure mode, the ultimate drift capacity of RC shear walls needs to be estimated accurately. In this paper, a parametric study of the seismic behaviour of RC shear walls was conducted using a fibre-based model to investigate the influence of basic design parameters including concrete strength, volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement in the confined area, axial load ratio and boundary column dimensions. This study focused on ultimate drift capacity for both shear walls with rectangular sections and shear walls with boundary columns. The fibre-based model was calibrated with experimental results of twenty eight tests on shear walls with confinement in the boundary regions. It was found that ultimate drift capacity is most sensitive to axial load ratio; increase of axial load deteriorated ultimate drift capacity dramatically. Two other secondary factors were: increased concrete strength slightly reduced ultimate drift capacity while increased shear reinforcement ratio and boundary column width improved ultimate drift capacity.

Plastic deformation of materials is a major source of energy dissipation during external loading. In nano-crystalline (NC) materials, local plastic strain may arise even if the overall external load is below the yield stress of the material because of the grain structure. In this paper, the damping capacity of nano-crystalline materials is modeled by considering the grain structure. First, the grains are modeled by using a composite model. The composite model takes each oriented crystal and its immediate boundary to form a pair. Next, the finite element method in conjunction with the composite model is employed to evaluate the energy dissipation of nano-crystalline material under cyclic loading. The influence of the grain size and the external loading on the energy dissipation is investigated numerically. Energy dissipation in each of the two parts (i.e. grain and grain boundary) is also calculated as an attempt to understand the effect of grain boundary on energy dissipation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to theoretically develop and empirically explore knowledge absorption, combination and desorption within and between organizations. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of knowledge-based view and absorptive capacity, the authors have conducted a multiple-case study to develop a theoretically grounded and empirically supported model of intra- and inter-firm knowledge cycles. Findings Firms identify their knowledge gaps and stocks, both tacit and explicit, undertaking efforts to fill the latter and maximize the value of the former. The paper finds that knowledge exploration, integration and exploitation both within the firm and between firms relies on absorptive, combinative and desorptive capacities. Further, as such capacities are organizationally expensive to maintain, firms will often emphasize one capacity over the other and focus either internally or externally to meet organizational goals. Originality/value While there is extensive research into absorptive capacity and some into combinative capacity, there is little empirical investigation of desorptive capacity and none into the integration of the three concepts; this paper seeks to fill that gap. Moreover, the resulting novel integrative model allows managers and researchers to identify the various capacities in use and their applications within the firm and between firms.

In the tall building frame structure, the traditional frame joints which are usually constructed with the high strength concrete of the columns bring many difficulties to the construction. The frame joints concreted with beams low grade concrete (named as sandwich joint) is urged intensively by the engineers. The paper introduces the experiment of two full-scale sandwich boundary joints in the middle floor under cyclic load. Based on the test result, the specimens seismic behavior on performance of load-carrying capacity, node deformation, ductility, energy dissipation capacity etc are studied. Through comparison with traditional frame boundary joints, comprehensive seismic performance of sandwich boundary joints does not significantly reduce. The engineering applications of these sandwich frame joints are proved to be feasible, and some suggestions for the engineering application of this joint are proposed.

The objective of this study is to establish boundary conditions to evaluate the cooling capacity of the Cooling Radiant Ceiling Panel (CRCP) considering the environment of a room equipped with the CRCP. The current study investigated the boundary conditions and derivation techniques from previous studies. Based on the results of the analysis, a heat transfer model was derived for a room fitted with CRCP. In addition, the heat transfer model was used to derive the factors affecting the cooling capacity of the CRCP and each factor was simulated and verified through this model. The effects of these factors on the capacity of the CRCP was established by using various boundary conditions. To verify the validity of the simulation model, the experimental results were compared with the cooling capacity for a specific case. As a result, it was established that even for the same panel, there was a variance in the cooling capacity of the CRCP based on the boundary conditions and that the influence of the surface exposed to the outdoors had more implications. Consequently, this study presents the influence factors to be considered when designing CRCP.

Background/Context The data team intervention was designed to support schools in using data while developing a solution to an educational problem. The participating data team members are responsible for building collective capacity within their school for using data and implementing actions related to the improvement plan. This can be challenging, because although they have gained knowledge and experience with data use and the educational problem, their colleagues who were not on the data team have not. As a result, there is a heightened risk for discontinuity between the behaviors of such colleagues and of the data team members: Colleagues will not automatically use data nor implement the actions for improvement. These discontinuities are referred to as boundaries. To establish common ground with their colleagues, data team members need to act as boundary crossers by brokering their knowledge. Purpose The present study used a process view to determine how data team members acted as boundary crossers by studying what content they had brokered, the level at which they had addressed that content, and what activities they had used to cross boundaries. Intervention Data teams consist of six to eight educators who collaboratively learn how to use data to analyze and address an educational problem at their school. They work following a cyclical procedure. Research Design A longitudinal qualitative case study was conducted in four Dutch schools that implemented the data team intervention. Data Collection and Analysis Artifacts were collected and all team members were interviewed twice. Log files, minutes of the meetings, and progress reports were used to obtain a complete picture of boundary crossing and to provide background information. A coding scheme was used in order to determine what content was brokered, the level at which the content was addressed, and the activities used to broker the content. Findings/Results Findings illustrated that team members mainly brokered knowledge about the educational problem and data use as applied to the educational problem, but rarely about data use in general. Overall, content was almost exclusively addressed at the level of awareness, indicating that only basic information was brokered. Conclusions/Recommendations Successful boundary crossing cannot be taken for granted: Team members brokered their knowledge in ways less likely to be effective. When they receive additional support for this, they are likely to increase their team's effectiveness in building school-wide capacity for both data use and the implementation of actions related to the improvement plan.

The steel-concrete composite ribbed shell is a new type of spatial structure. Different restrained boundary conditions have a considerably influence on the ultimate bearing capacity and stability. Based on the nonlinear finite element method, a numerical model is made by finite element analysis software ANSYS, in which material and geometrical nonlinear are considered. A spherical composite ribbed shell with 40m span, three different section dimensions and two different vector heights is used as an example, in which 4 different restrained boundary conditions are considered, including all fixed, all hinged, node fixed and node hinged. The results show that when the section dimension and span height are the same, the ultimate bearing capacity will be greater as the boundary becoming rigid, and when the section dimension is larger, the ratio of ultimate bearing capacity under different restrained boundary conditions is increasing, while as the span height is greater, the ratio is decreasing. To the instable shape, the influence of different restrained boundary is minor, all the instable modes are extreme point instability, but the trend of load-displacement curves are almost similar, and when the cross-section dimension of composite rib increases, the composite ribbed shell under different boundary constraints has shown higher post-buckling strength.

Abstract This study aims to examine the roles of second language (L2) learners’ autistic traits and working memory capacity in detecting prosodic boundaries. Forty-six learners of English with Mandarin as their native language completed questionnaires on personality and cognitive assessment – an Autism-Spectrum Quotient questionnaire (AQ) and a Working Memory questionnaire (WM). They also completed a Rapid Prosody Transcription (RPT) task in which they were asked to mark prosodic boundaries produced by Barack Obama in recordings of his Weekly Address. The results revealed that autistic traits and working memory capacity were positively correlated with each other, and attention to detail was the primary predictor for the detection of boundary tones. These findings provide insight into L2 learners’ detection of prosodic boundaries along the autistic traits and working memory capacity continuum and further indicate that EFL instructions should take individual differences into consideration when assessing L2 learners’ performance in listening or comprehension tasks.

Two kinds of dynamic load-carrying capacity (DLCC) evaluation methods for free-floating space manipulators (FFSM) in two typical on-orbit operating missions are proposed in this paper. DLCC evaluation is transformed into nonlinear programming problem (NPP) by introducing load-carrying coefficient to measure DLCC: in point-to-point task, penalty function method is adopted to approach the boundary of feasible region rapidly, then DLCC can be obtained through following iterations; in trajectory tracking task, NPP is solved by using multiple one-dimensional search, the dynamic load-carrying coefficient in discontinuous feasible region can be quickly solved through adjusting the searching boundary constantly. The effectiveness of the mentioned methods is verified by simulations.

Environmental governance of city hinges on the balance between technology possibility and rigid constraints of boundaries. Environmental carrying capacity of city constitutes rigid constraints of boundaries. The multiplier effect, incremental effect, and substitution effect of technology efficiently break through the constraints of environmental capacity posed upon city development, enable continuous expansion of city size, and lead to increasing amount and size of mega-cities. Nevertheless, rebound effect, accelerating effect, and ultimate effect of technology innovation also imposes limitations upon expansion of environmental carrying capacity and has negative effects on city operation and sustainability. Boundaries of mega-city cannot be broken though by technology possibility because of natural, social, and economic rigidity. Alternative solutions beyond technology, such as reformations and innovations on socio-economic and institutional mechanisms, should be concerned in the context of technical bottleneck of environmental governance of mega-city.

In recent years, greenhouse gases have increased in the atmosphere, and climate change concerns have triggered global efforts to find solutions for CO2 capture, separation, transport, and storage. Geological sequestration in the depleted unconventional reservoir is an effective measure to reduce the atmosphere’s CO2 content. The exact evaluation of the CO2 storage capacity can verify the feasibility of storing carbon dioxide and parameter optimization. A reasonable boundary element method to estimating the CO2 storage capacity of depleted shale gas reservoirs considering arbitrarily shaped boundaries is introduced. Firstly, the physical model with fracture networks is built based on the microseismic data. Then, the flow equation including the matrix and fracture can be obtained considering adsorption, and the star-delta transformation is used to deal with interconnected fracture segments. The point source function with an infinite boundary can be obtained after the Laplace transform method. Finally, the semianalytical flow solution is obtained by using the boundary element method in the Laplace region. Moreover, the results have a high agreement with commercial software for the regular boundary. The sensitivity of relevant parameters is analyzed by this method, and the importance of considering the boundary shape is emphasized. This method can evaluate the CO2 storage capacity of formation with the irregular boundary and is regarded as the guide of parameter optimization in CO2 storage.

The present paper proposes a new type of step bearing by specifically modifying the interfacial condition between the fluid film and the bearing surface and introducing the boundary slippage at those interfaces. Analysis for the load-carrying capacity and friction coefficient is presented for this kind of bearing. The comparison of the obtained analytical results with the conventional (no-slippage) step bearing results shows that modifying the interfacial condition and introducing the boundary slippage at the specific bearing surfaces can significantly increase the load-carrying capacity and reduce the friction coefficient of a step bearing. Design guideline, the load-carrying capacity and the friction coefficient are also presented for this bearing at optimum condition which reaches the maximum load-carrying capacity.

Purpose This paper aims to test the influence of external information search (EIS) on knowledge elaboration and group cognitive complexity (GCC) under the moderating effect of absorptive capacity (AC is indicated by prior knowledge base and gender diversity). Design/methodology/approach The results of three studies (one field study and two experimental studies) are reported. The first study tests the interaction between EIS and the two dimensions of AC on group knowledge elaboration in a sample of 65 organizational groups. In the second study, EIS was directly manipulated and the interaction with AC in a sample of 65 groups was tested. In the last experimental study, the AC of the boundary spanner (highest level of expertise versus lowest level of expertise) was manipulated and the effects of EIS in a sample of 37 groups were tested. Findings The first study reveals a significant interaction between EIS and prior knowledge base on knowledge elaboration and points toward a compensatory interplay of EIS and AC on GCC. The results of the second study indicate that EIS increases the time spent on task, as well as the efficiency of knowledge integration (GCC per unit of time). Furthermore, EIS has the strongest positive effect on GCC in groups in which at least one of the AC dimensions is average or high. The results of the last study show that the AC of the boundary spanner compensates for the lack of absorptive capacity of the group and also show that the cognitive distance between the boundary spanner and the rest of the group has a negative influence on the efficiency of knowledge integration in groups. Research limitations/implications The limitations of Study 1, common to non-experimental research (related to causality), are dealt with in the second and third studies that establish causality between EIS and GCC. Practical implications The paper has important implications for the management of information search effort in organizational groups, in particular the groups are advised to: engage in EIS to increase their cognitive repertoire and cognitive complexity, delegate, when possible, their most competent members to engage in boundary spanning activities as they will maximize the cognitive benefits of EIS and finally minimize the cognitive dissimilarity between the boundary spanner and the rest of the group to facilitate the effective integration of novel insights into the group cognition. Originality/value This study is among the first empirical attempts to uncover the causal effect of EIS on knowledge elaboration and GCC in groups and to uncover the role of the boundary spanner in the EIS efforts.

The modelling capacity of transparent soil was investigated by comparing boundary soil displacement fields under a model footing in a transparent soil model with those from a natural soil model. Transparent soil is made of either amorphous silica gels or powders and a pore fluid with a matching refractive index to model sand and clay. An optical system consisting of a laser light, camera, frame grabber, and computer was developed to optically slice a transparent soil model. A distinctive laser speckle pattern was generated by the interaction between the laser light and transparent soil. Two laser speckle images before and after a deformation were used to calculate the displacement field using an image processing technique called digital image correlation. The comparative study shows that transparent soil can be used to study natural soil with some limitations. Transparent soil and the developed optical system could be used to explore opportunities for more advanced nonintrusive three-dimensional deformation measurements for various soil–structure interaction problems.

If the boundary temperature is not constant, a mushy region may or may not appear; we find some general conditions ensuring one case or the other and we give a specific example illustrating the appearance of a mushy region.

Abstract. The inability to capture the physics of solid-particle suspension in turbulent fluids in simple formulas is holding back the application of multiphase fluid dynamics techniques to many practical problems in nature and society involving particle suspension. We present a force balance approach to particle suspension in the region near no-slip frictional boundaries of turbulent flows. The force balance parameter Γ contains gravity and buoyancy acting on the sediment and vertical turbulent fluid forces; it includes universal turbulent flow scales and material properties of the fluid and particles only. Comparison to measurements shows that Γ = 1 gives the upper limit of observed suspended particle concentrations in a broad range of flume experiments and field settings. The condition of Γ > 1 coincides with the complete suppression of coherent turbulent structures near the boundary in direct numerical simulations of sediment-laden turbulent flow. Γ thus captures the maximum amount of sediment that can be contained in suspension at the base of turbulent flow, and it can be regarded as a suspension capacity parameter. It can be applied as a simple concentration boundary condition in modelling studies of the dispersion of particulates in environmental and man-made flows.

Emergency events can induce serious traffic congestions in a local area which may propagate to the upstream roads, and even the whole network. Until now, the methodology forecasting spatiotemporal boundary propagation of emergency-event-based traffic congestions, with both explicitness and road network availability, has not been found. This study develops a new method for predicting spatiotemporal boundary of the congestion caused by emergency events, which is more applicable and practical than cell transmission model (CTM)-derived methods. This method divides the expressway network into different sections based on their functions and the shockwave direction caused by the emergency events. It characterizes the velocity of the moving congestion boundary based on kinetic wave theory and volume–density relationship. After determining whether the congestion will spread into the network level through an interchange using a new concept, highway node acceptance capacity (HNAC), we can predict the spatiotemporal boundary and corresponding traffic condition within the boundary. The proposed method is tested under four traffic incident cases with corresponding traffic data collected through field observations. We also compare its prediction performances with other methods used in the literature.

It calls on readers to think about attempts to actively recycle cultural 'debris' or 'waste' through an ethics of passage instead of the kind of instrumentalist statics that prevents the development of an ontology of mobility. Contending that such a capacity to inhabit passage is compromised by the eschatological language used to communicate the implications of environmental disaster, as well as by languages of consultation that (conceptually) empty place of any creative power to incubate alternatives – events, modes of relation –, the essay stresses the mythopoetic techniques that produce places as knots or nodal points within a network of passage. The designer's task is to create the hinge mechanisms that render such boundary ecologies inhabitable imaginatively, and by materialising the nexus between creativity and change to alter our position vis-a-vis our ethical responsibilities as citizens of a shared biosphere.

A definition of near-critical region based on heat capacity variation in transcritical heat exchangers In the paper, a method for determination of the near-critical region boundary is proposed. The boundary is evaluated with respect to variations of specific heat capacity along isobars. It is assumed that the value of specific heat capacity inside the near-critical region exceeds by more than 50% the practically constant value typical for fluids under normal conditions. It appears that large variations of heat capacity are also present for high-pressure subcritical states sufficiently close to the critical point. Therefore, such defined near-critical region is located not only in supercritical fluid domain but also extends into subcritical fluid. As an example, the boundaries of the near-critical region were evaluated for water, carbon dioxide and R143a.

Innovation is a key driver for organizations to survive and thrive in increasingly hyper-competitive markets. This study investigates the effects of boundary-spanning search on innovation capability. Specifically, it examines the mediating and moderating effects of network ties and absorptive capacity on boundary-spanning search and innovation in Chinese companies. We constructed a theoretical model of an organization’s boundary-spanning search and innovation capability and distributed a survey questionnaire to a sample of specific industries with upstream and downstream relations in Sichuan Province in China for their responses. Results from the study reveal that boundary-spanning search has a positive and significant impact on innovation capability as well as a positive moderating effect on absorptive capacity and innovation capability. This paper shows that enterprises need to continuously focus on exploring networking opportunities in direct and indirect ways to get access to effective flow and diffusion of resources, which in turn can enhance innovation capability.

Computer simulation can be utilized to predict the property and quality of heat-treated products. The prediction accuracy depends upon the thermal boundary condition and the thermal history from which surface heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is derived. Variables studied are thermal boundary and the surface HTC. Zone-based thermal boundary is set with and without edge effect. Lumped heat capacity method is used to predict HTC of silver probe (1st step), then iterative modification method is applied to the prediction of HTC of SUS304 cylinder (2nd step) and S45C cylinder itself (3rd step). Using FEM tool of DEFORM-HT combined with lumped heat program LUMPPROB, this research is intended to obtain the number of thermal boundary and iterative modification step. The higher accuracy is obtained by employing the edge effect of thermal boundary. The 2nd step significantly increases the prediction accuracy of radial distortion and residual stress distribution. However, 3rd step does not significantly increase the prediction accuracy.

In order to solve the problem of differential settlement, seepage flow and stability between the new and old dam boundary in capacity increasing of the plain reservoirs, the comparative analysis on the stability of the dam slope with different methods on dealing with the new and old dam boundary was performed by numerical simulation with FLAC3D. The result shows that combining the new and old dam by using geogrid indicates superiority for reducing differential settlement, improving the dam stability and safety, etc. In the meantime, on the basis of actual site investigation and theoretical analysis, combined with the requirements of design, construction and management in capacity increasing of the plain reservoirs, the key construction technology was put forward and widely applied foreground, which can improve the quality of the construction, reduce engineering disease and provide references for capacity increasing engineering of in plain reservoirs.

Slender steel frame structures are characterised by a number of imperfections which may reduce their load carrying capacity drastically. This article studies the effects of these imperfections on the load carrying capacity of a single storey steel plane frame using global sensitivity analysis and geometrically nonlinear (second-order) elastic finite element analysis. Imperfections are considered as random variables. Statistical load carrying capacities needed for the evaluation of sensitivity analysis are processed using classical statistical methods upon the emulation of Latin Hyper­cube Sampling simulation methods. The main interaction effects of random imperfections on the load carrying capac­ity are identified using global sensitivity analysis. It is illustrated that the effects of imperfections on the load carrying capacity varies dramatically depending on the height of the columns and the boundary conditions of the end conditions of the columns.

The capacity region of a two-transmitter Gaussian multiple access channel (MAC) under average input power constraints is studied, when the receiver employs a zero-threshold one-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC). It is proven that the input distributions of the two transmitters that achieve the boundary points of the capacity region are discrete. Based on the position of a boundary point, upper bounds on the number of the mass points of the corresponding distributions are derived. Furthermore, a lower bound on the sum capacity is proposed that can be achieved by time division with power control. Finally, inspired by the numerical results, the proposed lower bound is conjectured to be tight.

The present paper is a natural continuation of our last articles on the Riemann, Hilbert, Dirichlet, Poincaré, and, in particular, Neumann boundary-value problems for quasiconformal, analytic, harmonic functions and the so-called A-harmonic functions with arbitrary boundary data that are measurable with respect to the logarithmic capacity. Here, we extend the corresponding results to generalized analytic functions h : D→C with sources g : ∂z-h = g ∈ Lp , p > 2, and to generalized harmonic functions U with sources G : ΔU =G ∈Lp , p > 2. Our approach is based on the geometric (functional-theoretic) interpretation of boundary values in comparison with the classical operator approach in PDE. Here, we will establish the corresponding existence theorems for the Poincaré problem on directional derivatives and, in particular, for the Neumann problem to the Poisson equations ΔU =G with arbitrary boundary data that are measurable with respect to the logarithmic capacity. A few mixed boundary-value problems are considered as well. These results can be also applied to semilinear equations of mathematical physics in anisotropic and inhomogeneous media.
