William Lane Craig has written an impressive apologetic book on the topic of the historical Adam, which like all his previous books, is comprehensive and thought-provoking. The biblical, theological, and scientific data presented in this book are enormous. The conclusions of his arguments can be easily understood through his own summaries at the end of each chapter, but to really deconstruct his arguments and critically evaluate the presented scientific data would be beyond the scope of a review article and my scientific expertise. There have been several book reviews written by other scholars on Craig’s book, but Craig has been disappointed by the fact that some of them have completely missed his point (and appear to have perhaps not read his book!) This is quite plausible given the density of information and syllogistic argumentation that are weaved in this book. His responses to these various flawed book reviews can be easily found online from a simple Google search. Before presenting my critiques, I feel it necessary to provide a brief overview of the book so that readers and Craig himself, if he reads this, can easily point out where I have misunderstood him, should that happen.

In the context of new times, new types of writing are created in order to meet the demands and wishes of the contemporary public. Printed books make no exception especially given that the reading of (especially printed) books has declined, despite variable statistics over the years. The book reading habits have thus decreased, so making printed books attractive to readers has been a matter of concern for contemporary writers like Adam Thirlwell, as illustrated in his novella Kapow! (2012). In line with the contemporary mind-set of revolutionizing the way in which narrative is presented and the technique in which it is composed, Thirlwell plays with readers’ conceptions and expectations about literary texts, producing a highly experimental work. Along with the montage/collage technique, which will be discussed in the present paper, such concepts as ergodicity, autofiction, metatextuality, paratextuality, metamodernism or altermodernism are central to a proper understanding of how Thirlwell’s novella works and represent highlights of the exploratory undertaking of this article. Political activity of Poles in LithuaniaA review of the latest book by Adam Bobryk has the aim to present the most valuable points of the publication. The reviewer focuses his attention on the most important aspects described in the seven chapters of the book. He also observes that this is the first monograph describing political activities of the Polish community in the Republic of Lithuania. According to the author of the review the book by Adam Bobryk, despite a few insignificant errors, is an important position to read, and for any researcher of Polish-Lithuanian relations it is even mandatory. Polityczna aktywność Polaków na LitwieTekst jest recenzją najnowszej książki Adama Bobryka, w której autor stara się pokrótce przedstawić najważniejsze informacje zawarte w omawianej publikacji. Przytoczone zostały tu główne wątki opisane w siedmiu rozdziałach książki A. Bobryka. Recenzent zauważa też, że jest to pierwsza monografia opisująca działalność polityczną społeczności polskiej w Republice Litewskiej. Zdaniem autora recenzji książka Adama Bobryka, mimo kilku nieistotnych błędów, jest pozycją ważną, a dla badacza relacji polsko-litewskich wręcz obowiązkową.

The book of Genesis is known as the book of origins. It’s often referred to as one of the five books of Moses or the Pentateuch. Scholars have written many articles and essays about the book of Genesis. While reading the book of Genesis, the researcher discovered some similarities or relationships between Adam and Eve’s fall and the story of the drunkenness of Noah. As will be seen in this study, this comparative study is crucial in understanding more about and the entire narrative of the Torah. This includes the story of the descendants of Shem and their conflict with the children of Ham. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to derive lessons from Noah’s drunkenness and Adam and Eves fall by closely looking into their similarities and differences.

The Wealth of Nations (WN) is not a book from which we expect much enlightenment about class conflict. In spite of well-known passages referring to the diverging interests of workers, landlords and capitalists, the impression most have of WN is one of relative harmony among the classes. Nevertheless, Book III, “Of the different Progress of Opulence in different Nations,” which is the briefest and also the least studied of the five books comprising WN, provides considerable insight into the historical origin of conflict among social classes that derive from economic causes, and the circumstances under which conflict promises to become a characteristic feature of the economic process in any society.1 A re-examination of Adam Smith's theory of natural price in the context of the “stages of social history” developed in Book III, leads to interpreting the prospect for class conflict as a more integral and substantive part of WN than is generally recognized by historians of economic thought.

Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski and his political camp in the light of Ukrainian historiography In 1937, the Warsaw historian Marceli Handelsman published a work entitled Ukraińska polityka ks. Adama Czartoryskiego przed wojną krymską [Ukrainian politics of Prince Adam Czartoryski before the Crimean War]. So far, this book has been used by historians as the primary source of information on the Ukrainian issue in the views of the Hotel Lambert’s leader. The author of this text has decided to collect Ukrainian works referring to the topic inaugurated by Handelsman. Unfortunately, no larger study has been prepared on the Ukrainian side. However, a number of articles and encyclopaedic notes showing Prince Adam and his Eastern policy (especially during his stay at the court of Tsar Alexander I Romanov) has been published. Ukrainian authors paid much more attention to Czartoryski’s associates, who tried to put his ideas into practice. Ukrainian researchers wrote mainly about Michał Czaykowski (Sadyk Pasha) organizing the Cossack troops in the Ottoman Empire, about Hipolit Terlecki striving for the union of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, and finally about the ethnographer and writer Franciszek Duchiński clearly separating Ukraine from Russia in his writings.

ABSTRACT Milton’s Satan has more private speeches than any other character in Paradise Lost and displays a complex interiority, especially in his longest soliloquy, an anguish of conscience at the opening of book 4. But Milton also exhibits the interior of fallen Adam in book 10 through a soliloquy of despairing conscience that is resonant with Satan’s earlier conscience-inflicted speech. The similarities between the interiors of Adam and Satan are deliberate and potent, yet the differences are also significant, in ways that denigrate Satan, elevate Adam (and Eve), and reveal a spectrum of consciences in Paradise Lost. This article argues that Milton had much to say about interiority, particularly through the inner faculty of conscience, which he exhibits in his epic across a wide range of characters and scenarios, from angels to human beings, and from guilt and despair to divine consolation.

Abstract Why has the “Adam Smith Problem” recently been discussed in the literature? Although most historians of economic thought regard the problem solved, these discussions cast doubt on this apparent solution. This article suggests that the “Adam Smith Problem” may originate from the concept of the human being developed by Smith in the “Theory of Moral Sentiments”: in this book, human beings can be understood as composed of an empirical and a (quasi) transcendental side, in the form of the impartial spectator. It is argued that it is the tension between these two parts which creates supposed inconsistencies between aspects of the “Theory of Moral Sentiments” and the “Wealth of Nations” like, for example, the role of sympathy and self-interest in each of these books.

Yet the price theory of Wealth of Nations rests upon the assumption that the “natural” price of labor (and capital) is determined at any steady-state rate of balanced growth. There would seem, therefore, to be an irreconcilable contradiction between Smith’s exposition of the division of labor in Book I, chapters 1 to 3, and his price theory as set out in Book I, chapters 6 to 9.

Successfully profiting from textbook publishing as the typographer at Vilnius University, Józef Zawadzki (1781‒1838) established one of the most important and most successful book publishing, production, and distribution companies of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century in the territories of former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealt. The Zawadzki firm represented the new category of professional publishers. Over the first seventy years of the firm’s existence at the firm’s expense were published 122 Lithuanian books, as well as printed about 50 Lithuanian publications at their authors finances. The attitude of the members of Zawadzki family regarding the publishing of Lithuanian books essentially changed. While the Józef Zawadzki was indifferent towards them, in the middle of the 19th century Adam Zawadzki (1814‒1875) outcompeted other professional book publishers and distributors, and monopolized the publishing of Lithuanian books in the Samogitian Diocese, becoming not only the most important publisher of Lithuanian books, but also their printer and distributor. The successful realization of Adam Zawadzki’s business plans was partly due to his longstanding contacts with the most active figures of Lithuanian written culture, with whom he maintained a new form of cooperation based on authorial royalties, partly due effectively distribution of published matter, using first stationary bookstore in the periphery, located in the west of Lithuania (which served as a retail and wholesale trade enterprise), various ways of non-stationary book trade, services of a commercial library and advertising. Owing to Adam’s efforts, the Zawadzki firm made a significant contribution uniting main forces of authors and publishers of Lithuanian books in 19th century Lithuania, renewing the repertoire of Lithuanian books, as well as giving Lithuanian book publishing, production and distribution features characteristic for a modern business. A model of dealing with censorship through illegal publishing, developed with the publication Apej brostwą błaiwistes arba nusiturieima, was used throughout all the forty years of the press ban and helped raising several generations of literate Lithuanians and bringing Lithuania and Lithuania Minor closer together.

The paper presents Adam Bełcikowski’s study about 'Os Lusíadas 'by Luis Vaz de Camões. Bełcikowski’s text was issued in „Nowa Reforma” in Krakow (1891, nos. 26–27, 29–32, 35–37), soon after the release of the translation of 'The Lusiads' into Polish by Zofia Trzeszczkowska (Adam M-ski) on the Polish book market. The critic made an attempt at familiarising the Polish reader with the poem, indicating its ideological-artistic value.

Анотація:

Abstract This research explores the Sultan Adam Law (UUSA) in the Kingdom of Banjar during the Dutch colonization and the reign of Sultan Adam (1825-1857). UUSA, as a political law, reflects national law and the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence, despite being considered customary law. Islamic teachings, especially through UUSA and the Book of Sabilal Muhtadin, are integrated into customary law due to literacy limitations. Sultan Adam, through structural governance reforms, implemented Islamic principles in Banjar society, with UUSA serving as a crucial foundation. This research highlights the contribution of UUSA in depicting the integration of Islamic law in the Kingdom of Banjar and recognizes its historical impact in the study of customary law. Keywords: Sultan Adam, law, Banjar Abstrak Penelitian ini membahas Undang-Undang Sultan Adam (UUSA) di Kerajaan Banjar pada masa penjajahan Belanda dan pemerintahan Sultan Adam (1825-1857). UUSA, sebagai undang-undang politik, mencerminkan hukum nasional dan fikih mazhab Syafi'i, meskipun dianggap sebagai hukum adat. Ajaran Islam, terutama melalui UUSA dan Kitab Sabilal Muhtadin, terintegrasi dalam hukum adat karena keterbatasan literasi. Sultan Adam, melalui reformasi struktural pemerintahan, menerapkan prinsip-prinsip Islam dalam masyarakat Banjar, dengan UUSA menjadi landasan penting. Penelitian ini menyoroti kontribusi UUSA dalam menggambarkan integrasi hukum Islam dalam Kerajaan Banjar dan mengakui dampak historisnya dalam studi hukum adat. Kata Kunci: Sultan Adam, Hukum Banjar

The creation of Adam out of dust is a familiar tradition from the Book of Genesis. In abolitionist literature of the nineteenth century, this biblical narrative became the basis for a theory about the origins of race, arguing that because Adam was formed from red clay, neither he nor his descendants were white. This interpretation of Genesis underscored the value of non-white ancestors both in the biblical narrative and in human history and undermined popular theological arguments that upheld color-based racial hierarchies that privileged whiteness in the United States. This article examines the creation of Adam in Genesis 2 and its use in racial theory and abolitionist rhetoric, focusing on the children’s anti-slavery periodical The Slave’s Friend, published from 1836 to 1838.

Educational interaction is a relationship between two or more people in the educational process. The interaction will form a pattern of one-way, two-way and even multidirectional communication. In the story of the Prophet Adam AS in the Qur'an there is an educational interaction that forms a pattern of one-way communication. This study aims to find one-way communication patterns as educational interactions in the story of the Prophet Adam AS. The research method used is a type of library research (library Research). The data source comes from the primary data source in the form of verses from the Qur'an about the story of the Prophet Adam, and the secondary data source comes from an interpretation book about the opinions of scholars. Data analysis using content analysis. As a result of this study, there is a pattern of communication as an educational interaction between God and the Angels, between God and Satan, and between God and Adam AS and His Wife.

Wstęp do historii litewskiej [An Outline of the Lithuanian History] by Adam Jerzy Czartoryski has never been published before, it has not been analyzed, it has not been taken in consideration while dealing with texts on Polish, Belorussian and Lithuanian historiography, nor in the research into Count Adam Jerzy Czartoryski’s activities as the Curator in Wilno [Vilniaus]. Czartoryski’s historical treatise, which provides an outline of the history of Wielkie Księstwo Litewskie [the Grand Duchy of Lithuania], reveals in a unique way the historical and philosophical method of Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, who is still unknown to the general public as an author. Comparing Czartoryski’s book with the canonical works of historiography allows for an analysis of the process of Czartoryski’s connection of history with politics and political thinking. Concrete problems of historiography which Czartoryski faced could be clearly seen, particularly in his non-scholarly goal of his book: to show the differences in the civilizational foundations of Lithuania from Belorussian and Russian influences. Czartoryski in this way was combating weird plans to recreate the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the Romonov’s rule. This paper contains a fragment of a commentary to Duke Czartoryski’s treatise covering eight subchapters.

Poetics of the Negatives. Tadeusz Różewicz and the Photography The article Poetics of the Negatives poses a question about the position of photography in creation of the writers’images. Exemplified in the most substantial part by the pictures of Tadeusz Różewicz, taken by a prominent artist photographer Adam Hawałej of Wrocław, published in his two books (Różewicz, Śmietnik [Garbage]), the article aims to reconstruct Różewicz’s attitudes towards the photographic medium. The author of Niepokój [Faces of Anxiety] initially appears as an artist protecting his privacy, at the same time negating the creative measure of photography (in favor of its documentary role). However, as time passed and possibly because of his friendship with several outstanding photographers (A. Hawałej, J. Olek and J. Stankiewicz), his view on photography tended to evolve while the artist himself became not only the subject of numerous exquisite works, but eventually the author of many. The article concludes with an interpretation of the photographic happening captured by Adam Hawałej and published in the book Śmietnik.

At a time when psychoanalysis and 'analysis' in general is attracting increasing attention within the association, I was intrigued and stimulated by this slim book by British child psychoanalyst Adam Phillips. The book is about the search for expert knowledge, and the impossibility of the analyst as expert. For Phillips, a psychoanalyst is anyone who uses what were originally Freud's concepts of transference, the unconscious, and dream work, in paid conversations with people about how they want to live, and here he raises issues that are both challenging and engaging for our profession. I found his comments succinct and pertinent.
