In the work, photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra of a zinc sulfide phosphor series, namely microcrystalline ZnS:Cu obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), were obtained and analyzed. Based on the spectral analysis, the character of the influence of annealing parameters on the intensity of the “blue” (B) and “green” (G) PL bands is established. The behaviors of the PL and TL bands are compared and the TL bands in the blue and green spectral regions are identified. The TL mechanism was assumed to be the specific nature of the centers that cause the B- and G-bands of PL.

We analyzed the characteristics of white porcelain fired at different temperatures (800, 1200, 1350℃) by measuring changes in thermal luminescence(TL) and multi-wavelength (IR, orange, green, blue, UVA) optically stimulated luminescence(OSL) signal. White porcelain fired at 800℃ showed high intensity TL signals over a wide temperature range of 100 to 400℃, whereas white porcelain fired at 1200 and 1350℃ showed TL peaks at 100 and 210℃. Moreover, the OSL signals of white porcelain fired at 800℃, increased linearly according to the amount of irradiation, under IR, orange, green, blue and UVA stimulation. However, the OSL signals of white porcelain fired at 1200℃ increased linearly only under blue and UVA stimulation, while those of white porcelain fired at 1350℃ increased linearly only under UVA stimulation. In general, the strength of the TL/OSL signal was weakened as the firing temperature increased, which seems to be due to the vitrification caused by the high-temperature firing process. Therefore, it was found that it is important to select the optical stimulation source of the proper wavelength during TL/OSL dating to white porcelain.

The specific heat of the doped blue bronzes Tl 0.3-x K x MoO 3 (x = 0.06, 0.15) has been measured in the temperature range between 100 and 220 K. Anomalies were observed at 165.7 K and 164.8 K for Tl 0.24 K 0.06 MoO 3 and Tl 0.15 K 0.15 MoO 3, respectively. The specific heat jump, and the entropy and enthalpy changes associated with the CDW phase transition are estimated. The results suggest that the Peierls phase transition is of second order. By analogy with the behavior of pure Tl 0.3-x MoO 3, it shows that in the quasi-one-dimensional blue bronze, the perfect order of the interlayer alkali or thallium polyhedral chain plays an important role in the Peierls phase transition.

The transient voltage response of the charge density wave (CDW) to current pulses in Tl 0.3 MoO 3 and K 0.15 Tl 0.15 MoO 3 have been studied. Contrasted with the data reported previously for other blue bronze systems, a kind of superimposed (overshoot and sluggish) response waveform is observed for the first time. These results are discussed in analogy with the coexisting of "inductive" and "capacitive" effects at the onset of the CDW depinning.

Blue shark Prionace glauca is one of the most important elasmobranch species landed and consumed in Peru. Due to its importance as fishery resource, were evaluated lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and Total Volatile Base Nitrogen (TVBN) in the muscle tissue of 25 specimens, captured in the southern zone of Peruvian sea. These analytes were compared with current regulations and were determined its relationship with sex and total length (TL). We obtained ranges between 0.04-0.25, 0.01-0.04 and 0.09-0.50 mg kg-1 for Pb, Cd and Hg, respectively. TVBN values were between 38.50-94.60 mg TVBN 100 g-1. Analytes did not have differences with TL and gender. Pb was positive correlation with TL, while the Cd, Hg and TVBN did not. This study provides sanitary information of blue shark muscle from Peruvian waters.

This project uses luminescence techniques to investigate the radiation dose history of materials suspected to have been exposed to man-made (‘artificial’) radiation, from the perspective of two applications: forensic investigation and retrospective dosimetry measurement. The test material used in this project was taken from the concrete bioshield of the ANSTO Moata research reactor decommissioned some 10 years ago. It was subjected to nuclear radiation from the reactor core during its operational life and as such, is an analogue of concrete that would be expected to be sampled from clandestine nuclear facilities. Forensic investigation examines material to ascertain provenance and prior history, and in the context of this project seeks to confirm prior irradiation of concrete by artificial radiation. Retrospective dosimetry measures the absorbed radiation dose in material that is collected after the irradiation has taken place. The concrete was taken from different positions within the bioshield and so had varying absorbed doses of radiation, which again is an analogue of samples likely to be collected from the environs of the site of a nuclear accident or facility. This project detected and analysed the 620 nm (red) /190 °C TL peak in quartz, confirming that the material had been artificially irradiated. This signal was then compared against a dose calibration curve to derive an equivalent radiation dose for individual samples. These results were compared to the position in the bioshield and resulted in a decreasing exponential trend, which confirms the accepted attenuation character of radiation through matter. This characterisation may also be used to determine if thermal erosion of the luminescence has occurred and derive a correction for the sample reading. The quartz study was extended by investigating the 480 nm (blue) emission, found to be universally present in all quartz samples analysed for doses to 64 kGy. Sensitisation of both the 210 °C and 350 °C thermoluminescence peaks from 300 Gy-8 kGy was confirmed, with the sensitisation of the 350 °C peak found to be permanent, whereas the 210 °C peak sensitisation was found to be destroyed by heating and only reconstituted with further high doses. This differing behaviour forms the basis of a quick screening test that can indicate the prior exposure to high artificial radiation events, with a result obtainable in hours rather than days. The TL of un-hydrated cement was investigated and found to be linear to doses of 1 kGy however low sensitivity restricts its use to those scenarios where a large dose has been absorbed.

<em>Abstract</em>.—Management of blue catfish <em>Ictalurus furcatus</em> populations is an emerging focus for state fish and wildlife agencies as catfish anglers have shown a growing interest in trophy fishing. As blue catfish sampling methodology has improved, management of blue catfish fisheries has become a greater priority in some states. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) has collected abundance, age and growth, and mortality data on blue catfish from 14 reservoirs statewide. Electrofishing surveys indicated that blue catfish populations are dominated by slow-growing fish less than 400 mm total length (TL) and average 24% total annual mortality. In addition, relative abundance of ≥762 mm TL blue catfish in the angler creel (8%) greatly exceeds that in population samples (<1%). In 2009, ODWC recommended a statewide regulation limiting harvest of blue catfish greater than 762 mm TL to one fish per day while maintaining the daily limit of 15 fish per day. The proposal met with moderate opposition through the regular regulation review process but was approved by the Oklahoma Wildlife Commission. Legislative opposition to the proposal subsequently developed, and a resolution was introduced to rescind the regulation but ultimately failed. A regulation restricting blue catfish harvest to 15 fish daily with only 1 fish ≥762 mm TL went into effect on January 1, 2010.

<em>Abstract</em>.—The Missouri Department of Conservation suspected that blue catfish <em>Ictalurus furcatus </em>and flathead catfish <em>Pylodictis olivaris </em>were being heavily exploited by anglers in 22,539-ha Harry S. Truman Reservoir in west-central Missouri. A reward tag study was initiated in 2004 to determine angler exploitation rates for both species. Three hundred blue catfish ≥ 482 mm total length (TL) and 194 flathead catfish ≥ 508 mm TL were equipped with transbody Carlin dangler reward tags in 2004 and 2005, respectively. All reward tags displayed a reward value of US$50. A 5-year post-tagging estimate of annual exploitation (<em>u</em>) was calculated with a 25% annual correction for angler nonreporting and a one-time correction for tag loss. The estimated annual exploitation rates for blue catfish ranged from 25.5% to 33.4% with a mean of 28.8%. The estimated cumulative exploitation rate (<EM>U</EM>) at 5-years post-tagging was 81.7% for all sizes of tagged blue catfish and 92.4% for tagged blue catfish ≥ 610 mm TL. The estimated annual exploitation rates for flathead catfish ranged from 0% to 3.9% with a mean of 1.8%. The estimated cumulative exploitation rate at 5-years post-tagging for flathead catfish was 8.8%. These exploitation rates indicate that blue catfish are being heavily exploited while flathead catfish are not. Of all the reward tagged blue catfish that were reported by anglers, 7% were reported as released while 22% of the reported flathead catfish were released. These results are being used to examine possible regulation changes to protect the blue catfish fishery at Truman Reservoir.

<em>Abstract</em>.—We evaluated long-term fisheries data relative to a range of perturbations for the Arkansas River from 1970 to 2006. Rotenone sample sites were located at pool 13 (Garrison Creek), Ozark Lake (Lavaca), and Lake Dardanelle (Panther Cove and the Arkansas Nuclear 1 Effluent Bay). The period of record was 24 years for Garrison Creek and Lavaca, 29 years for Effluent Bay, and 30 years for Panther Cove. Mean total fish biomass ranged between 466 kg/ha and 1,601 kg/ha among sites, and no temporal trends were detected for total biomass. Invasion of zebra mussels <em>Dreissena polymorpha</em>, discovery of largemouth bass virus, and imposition of a 381 mm total length (TL) minimum length limit for largemouth bass <em>Micropterus salmoides </em>likely contributed to notable changes in these fisheries during the past 30 years. Biomass of redear sunfish <em>Lepomis microlophus</em>, freshwater drum <em>Aplodinotus grunniens</em>, and blue catfish <em>Ictalurus furcatus </em>increased in association with the invasion of the river by nonnative zebra mussels. Spotted gar <em>Lepisosteus oculatus </em>and paddlefish <em>Polyodon spathula </em>biomass increased, and common carp <em>Cyprinus carpio </em>biomass declined coincident with the zebra mussel invasion. Large-scale sedimentation of aquatic habitats may have been related to observed declines of backwater-oriented species, especially common carp and spotted gar. The frequency of largemouth bass between 350 and 400 mm TL increased in electrofishing samples after the imposition of a 381-mm-TL minimum length limit, and total catch per hour of largemouth bass greater than 381 mm TL increased. Our associations would suggest that the discovery of largemouth bass virus during 2000 contributed to (1) lower electrofishing catch per hour of largemouth bass greater than 533 mm TL, and (2) an average increase of 420 h required for an angler to catch a 2.27-kg largemouth bass. We anticipate further changes in the Arkansas River during the next decade from the biological invasions of white perch <em>Morone americana</em>, bighead carp <em>Hypophthalmichthys nobilis</em>, and silver carp <em>H. molitrix</em>; increased establishment of aquatic vegetation; and accelerated loss of aquatic habitats associated with planned federal navigation channel improvements.

The involvement of calcium and phospholipid in the activation of Factor X to Xa by Factor IXa and Factor VIII has been well documented. Although we and others have shown that maintenance of physiological concentrations of calcium has a positive effect on the stability of Factor VIII in plasma, calcium’s role in the structure and function of Factor VIII remains to be fully elucidated. To this end, we examined the effect of calcium on the stability of highly purified Factor VIII. Homogeneous Factor VIII (specific activity approximately 5,200 U/mg) was prepared from heparinized blood using a six-step purification procedure including cryoprecipitation, polyethylene glycol precipitation, Affi-Gel Blue, Aminohexyl, polyelectrolyte E5 and immunoaffinity chromatography. This yielded a single chain high molecular weight species of approximately 260,000. The protein was tested for stability using the one stage assay over 6h of incubation at 4°C in buffers containing 0 mM, 5 mM, and 10 mM CaCl2. Addition of 5 mM and 10 mM CaCl2 to desalted, purified Factor VIII resulted in an immediate 12% (for 5 mM CaCl2) and 23% (for 10 mM CaCl2), enhancement of procoagulant activity compared to samples containing no added calcium. The calculated half-life (T1/2) of activity of Factor VIII in buffers containing no added calcium was 3.8h, whereas the Tl/2 for preparations incubated in the presence of 5 mM and 10 mM CaCl2 were increased to 5h and 5.5h respectively. Although the addition of calcium improved the recovery of activity over the first 0.5h of incubation, at later times the rate of decay in the calcium containing preparations was similar to Factor VIII preparations without added calcium. Our results suggest that removal of calcium from the microenvironment of purified Factor VIII by desalting, results in an immediate loss of procoagulant activity, which can be partially restored within the first 0.5h following readdition of calcium. The decay in Factor VIII activity observed at later times in the 0 mM, 5 mM and 10 mM CaCl2 containing buffers likely reflects calcium-independent denaturation of the protein.
