We provide a constructive proof of exponentially localized Wannier functions and related Bloch frames in 1- and 2-dimensional time-reversal symmetric (TRS) topological insulators. The construction is formulated in terms of periodic TRS families of projectors (corresponding, in applications, to the eigenprojectors on an arbitrary number of relevant energy bands), and is thus model-independent. The possibility to enforce also a TRS constraint on the frame is investigated. This leads to a topological obstruction in dimension 2, related to [Formula: see text] topological phases. We review several proposals for [Formula: see text] indices that distinguish these topological phases, including the ones by Fu–Kane [16], Prodan [33], Graf–Porta [24] and Fiorenza–Monaco–Panati [27]. We show that all these formulations are equivalent. In particular, this allows to prove a geometric formula for the [Formula: see text] invariant of 2-dimensional TRS topological insulators, originally indicated in [16], which expresses it in terms of the Berry connection and the Berry curvature.

Abstract Phototaxis in climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) was investigated by subjecting fish to LED light traps (blue, green, yellow, orange, red, white) and control (total 13 traps). The trap was constructed of polyamide (PA) nylon monofilament (31.75 mm mesh size), fastened around two wire ring frames (∅ 490 mm) with a net height of 270 mm. A lamp was placed on the bottom of the trap. 96 individuals, consisting of 34 males and 62 females, were analysed. Both continuous and blinking light traps were considerably higher in the number of catch compared to the control. The body size of catch ranged from 76-135 mm TL and 8.00-55.00 g W. The mean YPUEs (yield per unit effort) for male and female were 4.00 ± 2.25 and 7.00 ± 4.50 g trap−1 trial-1, respectively. The CPUEs (catch per unit effort) for continuous, blinking light traps and the control ranged from 0.43 to 0.93, 0.21 to 0.86, and 0.21 fish trap−1night−1, respectively. The mean condition factor (K) values of 2.10 ± 0.40 for males and 2.13 ± 0.34 for females indicate fish with better condition. Positive group responses of fish were more pronounced in the middle size classes between 90 and 109 mm TL. Negative allometric growth pattern (b) (1.7271-1.8828) was observed, indicating that the culture system should be refined. A. testudineus showed positive phototaxis to the “colors of light”. In addition, efforts to collect climbing perch from the wild for breeding and commercial purposes may benefit from this study.

For a typical low complexity video sequence, the weight of each P-frame in the stream is approximately three times smaller than the I-frame weight. However, taking into account the number of P-frames in the group, they make the main contribution to the total video data amount. Therefore, the possibility of upgrading coding methods for P-frames is considered on preliminary blocks' type identification with the subsequent formation of block code structures. As the correlation coefficient between adjacent frames increases, the compression ratio of the differential-represented frame's binary mask increases. The compression ratio of the differential-represented frame's binary mask varies from 3 to 21 depending on the correlation coefficient between adjacent frames. The most preferable method for constructing the compact representation technology of the binary masks of frames represented in a differential form is the approach. This is based on the identification and description of the lengths of one-dimensional binary series. A binary series is a consecutive binary elements sequence with the same value. In this case, sequences of identical binary elements are replaced by their lengths.

Casazza and Kutyniok [Frames of subspaces, in Wavelets, Frames and Operator Theory, Contemporary Mathematics, Vol. 345 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2004), pp. 87–113] defined fusion frames in Hilbert spaces to split a large frame system into a set of (overlapping) much smaller systems and being able to process the data effectively locally within each sub-system. In this paper, we handle this problem using block sequences and generalized block sequences with respect to g-frames. Examples have been given to show their existence. A necessary and sufficient condition for a block sequence with respect to a g-frame to be a g-frame has been given. Finally, a sufficient condition for a generalized block sequence with respect to a g-frame to be a g-frame has been given.

AbstractNear exact Banach frames are introduced and studied, and examples demonstrating the existence of near exact Banach frames are given. Also, a sufficient condition for a Banach frame to be near exact is obtained. Further, we consider block perturbation of retro Banach frames, and prove that a block perturbation of a retro Banach frame is also a retro Banach frame. Finally, it is proved that if E and F are both Banach spaces having Banach frames, then the product space E×F has an exact Banach frame.

Near exact fusion Banach frames have been discussed with the help of examples. Further, it has been proved that if a Banach space has a fusion Banach frame then it has a normalized tight and exact fusion Banach frame. In the sequel, we consider block perturbation of fusion Banach frames and proved that a block perturbation of a fusion Banach frame is also a fusion Banach frame. Some stability results for fusion Banach frames have also been obtained. Finally, we give an application of near exact fusion Banach frame.

In order to improve the stability and effectiveness of the key frame extraction, we devise a key frame extraction algorithm based on frame image block. It get the local characteristics of the image frame information by partitioning frame image, then calculate the non-correlation coefficient, and extract key frames reflecting more diversified information. Experimental results show that the algorithm for the lens of key frames of extraction efficiency is higher and extraction of key frames can effectively reflect lens content.

This paper presents an overlapping block selection method to determine the dominant macroblock (MB) in multi-frame skipping transcoding to improve picture quality. A non-intra MB in a non-skipped frame should be predicted by a block in another non-skipped frame. The re-constructed motion vector (MV) between two non-skipped frames accumulates prediction error. As the number of frames between two non-skipped frames is increased, such prediction error, or called mismatch error, is also increased. To reduce the impact on the transcoding quality caused by the prediction error, we improve the traditional overlapping block selection method, and propose a most approximate overlapping block to help to determine a dominant MB. In the proposed method, the location of an overlapping block is calculated by adding the accumulated MVs and the position of the current MB. The accumulated MVs are not the real MVs for MBs but the approximate vectors for 16 × 16 overlapping blocks. Simulation shows that the proposed method has a higher performance than the traditional method.

Most patterns in continuous video sequences are similar. Temporal distortion, e.g. frames dropping, insertions, transposition, is a challenging issue for video reconstruction to find the actual missing positions in video sequences. The aim of this paper is to raise the detection accuracy and synchronize video frames back to original positions following temporal synchronization distortions. The successive video frames have similar statistics but the statistics in some local regions may differ from one another. Therefore, the block partition is partitioned into non-overlapping blocks by each frame, and then the local variance is calculated and taken as the block feature in each block. For most of the video frames, the pixels within the frame blocks are correlated and the maximum eigenvalue will be far from other eigenvalues. In this case, the maximum eigenvalue is set as the dominated block feature. For less correlated blocks, the values of the eigenvalues will be a little closer. In this case, the mean value of the eigenvalues represents the dominated block feature. Then, the sum of variance is regarded as the frame feature to calculate from these selective dominated blocks. Simulation results show the proposed methods are robust in evaluating the missing positions against temporal distortions.

Degradations frequently occur in archive films that symbolize the historical and cultural heritage of a nation. In this study, the problem of detection blotches commonly encountered in archive films is handled. Here, a block-based blotch detection method is proposed based on a visual saliency map. The visual saliency map reveals prominent areas in an input frame and thus enables more accurate results in the blotch detection. A simple and effective visual saliency map method is taken into consideration in order to reduce computational complexity for the detection phase. After the visual saliency maps of the given frames are obtained, blotch regions are estimated by considered spatiotemporal patches—without the requirement for motion estimation—around the saliency pixels, which are subjected to a prethresholding process. Experimental results show that the proposed block-based blotch detection method provides a significant advantage with reducing false alarm rates over HOG feature (Yous and Serir, 2017), LBP feature (Yous and Serir, 2017), and regions-matching (Yous and Serir, 2016) methods presented in recent years.

This thesis collects three of the publications that the candidate produced during his Ph.D. studies. They all focus on geometric phases in solid state physics. We first study topological phases of 2-dimensional periodic quantum systems, in absence of a spectral gap, like e.g. (multilayer) graphene. A topological invariant n_v in Z, baptized eigenspace vorticity, is attached to any intersection of the energy bands, and characterizes the local topology of the eigenprojectors around that intersection. With the help of explicit models, each associated to a value of n_v in Z, we are able to extract the decay at infinity of the single-band Wannier function w in mono- and bilayer graphene, obtaining |w(x)| <= const |x|^{-2} as |x| tends to infinity. Next, we investigate gapped periodic quantum systems, in presence of time-reversal symmetry. When the time-reversal operator Theta is of bosonic type, i.e. it satisfies Theta^2 = 1, we provide an explicit algorithm to construct a frame of smooth, periodic and time-reversal symmetric (quasi-)Bloch functions, or equivalently a frame of almost-exponentially localized, real-valued (composite) Wannier functions, in dimension d <= 3. In the case instead of a fermionic time-reversal operator, satisfying Theta^2 = -1, we show that the existence of such a Bloch frame is in general topologically obstructed in dimension d=2 and d=3. This obstruction is encoded in Z_2-valued topological invariants, which agree with the ones proposed in the solid state literature by Fu, Kane and Mele.

Located on one of the highly active seismic fault systems in the world, the building stock in Turkey is mainly composed of reinforced concrete frames with 4-5 stories. Due to design and construction deficiencies resulting from the use of unqualified personnel and insufficient supervision, many of these buildings lack lateral stiffness, ductility and strength. For many structures, there is a need to alleviate these deficiencies by means of some rehabilitation techniques prior to earthquakes. One approach also used very widely in Turkey is to fill some of the frame bays by cast-in-place R/C panels. The procedure appears to be very practical at first glance. It also appears to be very economical as far as the production of the panels is concerned. However, the production phase is slow, dirty, destructive and disruptive to occupants. Moreover, it requires relatively skilled personnel and special equipment. Therefore, the real life experience shows that the actual cost in practice is much higher when all other hidden costs are taken into account. The aim of this experimental study is to explore the potential of using infill walls made of custom shaped and high strength concrete blocks as a simpler and more practical alternative to cast-in-place R/C panels to increase the lateral load bearing capacity of frame structures. The effectiveness of FRCM (Fiber Reinforced Cementitous Matrix) system on damaged structures is also investigated in this study.

Det hela började med en väldigt grundläggande tanke om en säker förskola. Trappor är farliga och bör undvikas. För många våningar blir lätt problematiskt. Avgörande för projektet blev det att barnen ska kunna spendera hela dagar på ett och samma våningsplan. Därmed är barnens avdelningar helt placerade på sina respektive envåningsplaner. De omsluter gemensamt samlingsrum och gård. På övre plan finns de yngsta barnens avdelning med direkt tillgång till takterrass. Planlösningen följer en upprepande modulenhet, där rummen är glasade mot söder. På så sätt efterliknas den enkelhet som finns i modernistiska paviljonger, samtidigt som en tydlig framsida definieras. En förlängning av rummen bildar en passage som går genom hela byggnaden, både interiört och exteriört och på bågge våningsplan. Detta skapar ett "mellanrum" i ett försök att överbrygga den annars skarpa gränsen mellan inne och ute. Jag tror att denna utformning med upprepande rumsindelning, samt lätthet och horisontalitet i arkitektoniskt uttryck talar ett språk som klargör för hur förskolan ska brukas.
It all started with a very essential idea for a safe kindergarten. Staircases are dangerous and are better avoided. Too many levels easily become problematic. Crucial through the project was that the children could spend full days on a single storey plan. Consequently the childrens' sections are fully placed on their respective single level plans. These enclose a common room and playgrounds. On the upper level you will find the youngests' section directly accessing roof terraces. The floor plan follows a repetitive module, where rooms facing south are glazed in that direction, resembling the simplicity of modernist pavilions, yet defining a pronounced front. An extension of the rooms towards the playgrounds, a passageway, runs through the whole building, both indoors and outdoors and on both levels, creating a linking "room" in the middle. I believe that this type of layout with repetitive modules and simplicity and horizontality in architectural expression makes it clear how the kindergarten is best operated.

Individuals with autism are largely taught using direct contingency learning, limiting their already potentially limited relational repertoire. A multiple baseline design across skills with an embedded multiple probe design was implemented to demonstrate the efficacy of training procedures used to established nonarbitrary relations in the context of block design. The PEAK – Transformation module (PEAK-T) is a curriculum designed to develop the relational repertoire of individuals with and without developmental disabilities, from which procedures were adapted. Training phases were each preceded by test probes of each of the target relations. Transfers of stimulus function were tested by presenting a novel context in which the trained and derived relations were used in completion of a task. The entailment probes across each of the programs showed transfers of function across three relational stimulus classes. All three directly trained relations across three frames resulted in mastery level responding. The results support the efficacy of the PEAK-T curriculum such that complex relational responding can be taught to a child with intellectual disabilities.

Shallowly embedded column base connections with unreinforced block out concrete are a common method of connecting steel columns to their foundation. There has been little research done to accurately quantify the effects of this block out concrete on the connection strength and rigidity, and therefore there is nothing to aid the practicing engineer in accounting for this in structural analysis. Due to this lack of understanding, engineers have typically ignored the effects of shallow block out concrete in their analysis, presumably leading to a conservative design. Recent research has attempted to fill this gap in understanding. Several methods have been proposed that seek to quantify the effects of shallow block out concrete on a column base connection. Barnwell proposed a model that predicts the strength of a connection. Both Jones and Tryon used numerical modeling to predict the rotational stiffness of the connection. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the validity of these proposed models. A total of 8 test specimens were created at 2/3 scale with varying column sizes, connection details, and embedment depths. The columns were loaded laterally and cyclically at increasing displacements until the connection failed. The results show that the strength model proposed by Barnwell is reasonable and appropriate, and when applied to this series of physical tests produce predictions that have an observed/predicted ratio of between 0.95 to 1.39. The results also show that methods for estimating the rotational stiffness of the connection at the top of the block out concrete, as proposed by Jones and Tryon also produce reasonable values that had observed/predicted ratios of between 0.93 to 1.47. An alternative model for determining a design value for the rotational stiffness of a shallowly embedded column base plate is also proposed. When the embedment depth to column depth ratio is greater than 1.22, the connection is sufficiently rigid and at small deflections (less than 1% story drift) may be accurately modelled with infinite rotational stiffness (a "fixed" connection) at the base of the column.

Dans cet article nous proposons une méthode qui permet d'identifier et de suivre l'objet cible à partir des données digitales MPEG. Cette méthode consiste à récupérer les informations sur le vecteur de mouvement de chaque macrobloc en mouvement puis identifier les objets mobiles avec la méthode de la croissance régionale des vecteurs de mouvement. Cette méthode évite les problèmes liés à la forme, à la couleur et à la taille de l'objet. Notre technique utilise la transformation de Hough rapide et les caractéristiques géométriques de la zone de texte pour extraire les informations de la publicité des images de programme sportif sur TV. La corrélation de Speckle Digital qu'on utilise dans la mesure optique est la technique d'adaptation bloc du traitement d'image. Nous pouvons déduire la valeur de déplacement de subpixel avec la formule d'interpolation et comparer la précision théorique et la stabilité de la méthode d'interpolation parabolique et la méthode de gradient
Moving object detection and tracking is a major issue in many vision systems. Since features of MPEG, our paper presents a novel mehtod that directly detects and tracks the moving object in video from MPEG coded data fluid. Our method can fully make use of the temporal and spatial correlation between I and P frame, and effectively avoid the difficult of change of shape, color and background of moving object. Precise visibility measuring of billboard advertising is a key element for the organizers and broadcasters to make cost effective their sport live relay. Our technique makes use of fast Hough transform and text's geometry features in order to extract advertisement from sport TV images. Digital Speckle Correlation Method has been applied to an optical measurement. This paper discusses the theory precision of the quadratic interpolation and the gradient method from mathematics theory. And we ameliorate their formula from discrete integer aspect

Ankara has experienced a radical transformation after 1950s, in which the identity of the highly planned capital has been erased, emphasizing homogenization, blankness and similarity. The Apartment Block was the object of this condition and the subject of the transformation in the urban identity, both with its physical existence and with the mind-set it has radiated to the whole levels of the society. It has stripped out the identity of the city with its "
endless reproduction."
This transformation has led the Apartment Block to be accused of transforming Turkish cities to deformed agglomerations, deprived of aesthetics. In this sense, architectural discipline has been criticized for its impotence to respond the economical, social and cultural conditions that traverse the urban setting. This criticism has questioned the generative role of architecture in the Early Republican period as a social engineering and discouraged any relation between architecture and the city, which has manifested the reduction of the architecture to a formal discipline. Ankara, with its dazzling transformation within few decades proposed its own urbanism and its own architecture, with the mutation of the Apartment Block first to a resilient frame than to a multi-programmed infrastructure. This study will consider this transformation as &

manifestation of a new kind of urbanism that was mainly declared by Rem Koolhaas and OMA, claming that the resilient and neutral objects are the dominant and extensive forms of the contemporary urbanism. An adequate solution to the problem of mental causation should deliver not just the efficacy of mental properties, but the efficacy of mental properties as such, of mentality in its own right. But this appears to block an identity solution from the outset. Any property that’s both mental and physical, the argument goes, has a dual nature, and this just reintroduces the problem of mental causation, now framed in terms of these two natures. But a powers ontology promises to save the identity theory, at least from this problem. Such an ontology identifies a mental property’s mental and physical “natures” with just the property itself. A mental property is, at once, both wholly mental and wholly physical, so that to causally engage the physical nature of a mental property is to engage its mental nature as well.

»Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar« - seit der ersten grundlegenden Neukommentierung von Art. 1 GG durch Matthias Herdegen (2003) haben sich die wissenschaftlichen Diskurse und öffentlichen Auseinandersetzungen zu Begriff und Thema der Menschenwürde zunehmend intensiviert und ausgeweitet. In jüngster Zeit hat Stefan Lorenz Sorgner im Ausgang von Nietzsche und im Blick auf posthumanistische Thesen die Debatte deutlich zugespitzt und konstatiert, dass die Bestimmung der Menschenwürde im Sinne von Art. 1 GG keine ausreichende Untermauerung im gesellschaftlichen Konsens mehr besitze. Sorgner fordert eine Neubewertung und letztlich die Abschaffung dieses Begriffs sowie die Auflösung der Kategorie »Mensch« im Sinne einer Sonderstellung des Menschen gegenüber den anderen höher entwickelten Lebewesen. Hintergrund dieser Debatten sind die seit ca. 20 Jahren erzielten enormen Fortschritte der Gentechnologie, der Reproduktionsmedizin und der Möglichkeiten der biotechnischen »Verbesserung« des Menschen (enhancement). Da sich die Protagonisten »posthumanistischer« Positionen mit Vorliebe auf Nietzsche berufen, hat das Nietzsche-Forum München im Oktober 2012 ein interdisziplinäres Symposion organisiert, bei dem die neuen Fragen nach der Menschenwürde in ihren verfassungsrechtlichen, philosophischen und religionswissenschaftlichen Aspekten erläutert und zur Diskussion gestellt wurden. Abstract Analytical formulae for both the velocity spectrum and the acoustic far-field radiated sound pressure for a doubly rib-stiffened (small frames and bulkheads) fluid-loaded elastic plate, excited by several different force distributions, are derived. The force distributions are (1) a line-force applied at a single point and (2) two Gaussian distributed force intensities whose effective width either spans the small rib spacing or the large rib spacing. The far-field sound pressure as a function of frequency is calculated. The concentrated line force case shows evidence of frame interference effects (sometimes referred to as Bloch waves) in the radiated pressure fields. These arise from coherent interaction of the pressure fields emanating from the frame reaction forces and the applied force pressure field. The frequencies at which these coherence effects are manifest depend on the stiffeners’ spacing as compared to the fluid-loaded flexural wavelength. The Gaussian force distribution eliminates these interaction effects depending on whether or not the effective force width is greater or less than the respective rib spacing.

Video deblurring with event information has attracted considerable attention. To help deblur each frame, existing methods usually compress a specific event sequence into a feature tensor with the same size as the corresponding video. However, this strategy neither considers the pixel-level spatial brightness changes nor the temporal correlation between events at each time step, resulting in insufficient use of spatio-temporal information. To address this issue, we propose a new Spatio-Temporal Relation-Attention network (STRA), for the specific event-based video deblurring. Concretely, to utilize spatial consistency between the frame and event, we model the brightness changes as an extra prior to aware blurring contexts in each frame; to record temporal relationship among different events, we develop a temporal memory block to restore long-range dependencies of event sequences continuously. In this way, the complementary information contained in the events and frames, as well as the correlation of neighboring events, can be fully utilized to recover spatial texture from events constantly. Experiments show that our STRA significantly outperforms several competing methods, e.g., on the HQF dataset, our network achieves up to 1.3 dB in terms of PSNR over the most advanced method. In order to improve the undetectability, a lossless algorithm based on orthogonal vectors with limited distortion diffusion for 3D H.264 video is proposed in this paper. Inter-view distortion drift is avoided by embedding data into frames, which do not predict other views. Three conditions and pairs of coefficients are proposed to prevent intra-frame distortion diffusion. Several quantized discrete cosine transform coefficients are chosen from an embeddable luminance 4×4 block to construct a carrier vector, which is modified by an offset vector. When the carrier vector and the offset vector are orthogonal or near to be orthogonal, a data bit can be hidden. Experimental results indicate that the method is effective by enhancing peak signal-to-noise ratio with 7.5dB and reducing the Kullback-Leibler divergence with 0.07 at least. More than 1.7×1015 ways could be utilized for constructing the vectors, so it is more difficult for others to steal data.

Extending the previous two years of research results (Mizarch, et al, 2012, Tao, 2011, 2012), the third year’s efforts in both Maryland and Israel were directed towards the engineering of the system. The activities included the robust chick handling and its conveyor system development, optical system improvement, online dynamic motion imaging of chicks, multi-image sequence optimal feather extraction and detection, and pattern recognition. Mechanical System Engineering The third model of the mechanical chick handling system with high-speed imaging system was built as shown in Fig. 1. This system has the improved chick holding cups and motion mechanisms that enable chicks to open wings through the view section. The mechanical system has achieved the speed of 4 chicks per second which exceeds the design specs of 3 chicks per second. In the center of the conveyor, a high-speed camera with UV sensitive optical system, shown in Fig.2, was installed that captures chick images at multiple frames (45 images and system selectable) when the chick passing through the view area. Through intensive discussions and efforts, the PIs of Maryland and ARO have created the protocol of joint hardware and software that uses sequential images of chick in its fall motion to capture opening wings and extract the optimal opening positions. This approached enables the reliable feather feature extraction in dynamic motion and pattern recognition. Improving of Chick Wing Deployment The mechanical system for chick conveying and especially the section that cause chicks to deploy their wings wide open under the fast video camera and the UV light was investigated along the third study year. As a natural behavior, chicks tend to deploy their wings as a mean of balancing their body when a sudden change in the vertical movement was applied. In the latest two years, this was achieved by causing the chicks to move in a free fall, in the earth gravity (g) along short vertical distance. The chicks have always tended to deploy their wing but not always in wide horizontal open situation. Such position is requested in order to get successful image under the video camera. Besides, the cells with checks bumped suddenly at the end of the free falling path. That caused the chicks legs to collapse inside the cells and the image of wing become bluer. For improving the movement and preventing the chick legs from collapsing, a slowing down mechanism was design and tested. This was done by installing of plastic block, that was printed in a predesign variable slope (Fig. 3) at the end of the path of falling cells (Fig.4). The cells are moving down in variable velocity according the block slope and achieve zero velocity at the end of the path. The slop was design in a way that the deacceleration become 0.8g instead the free fall gravity (g) without presence of the block. The tests showed better deployment and wider chick's wing opening as well as better balance along the movement. Design of additional sizes of block slops is under investigation. Slops that create accelerations of 0.7g, 0.9g, and variable accelerations are designed for improving movement path and images.

Urban buildings will collapse when subjected to extreme earthquake. Debris caused by collapse can block roads, hinder rescue and increase casualties. Therefore, predicting the collapsed debris scope makes sense for earthquake damage estimation and urban disaster reduction. To solve the problem of element disappearance in the finite element method, the animation simulation technology is introduced in this study. The complete collapse process of steel frame structures with infill walls characterized by different height-width ratios and length-width ratios is simulated, and the distribution of collapsed debris is analyzed. The results indicate that the proposed method can completely reproduce the collapse process and collapsed debris distribution of the steel frames. Besides, the contribution of infill walls significantly expands the collapsed debris scope. Last, considering the length-width ratios and height-width ratios of the buildings, a prediction method of collapsed debris blocked area of steel frame is proposed.
