Eggplant is a familiar and admired vegetable in Bangladesh. It is a highly perishable vegetable and cannot be preserved long. Drying is an ancient preservation method used to extend shelf-life of fruits and vegetables. Different Pretreatments may affect the drying kinetics of foods. A study was conducted to evaluate how pretreatments affect the drying behavior of eggplant. Proximate composition of fresh eggplant was analyzed. The samples of constant thickness (8 mm) were dried at 50°C, 55°C and 60°C to determine the effect of temperature on drying rate constant, while for determining the effect of thickness on rate constant, eggplant slices of 4, 6 and 8 mm thicknesses were dried at a constant temperature of 55°C. It was observed that, drying rate decreased with the increase in thickness and the index ‘n’ was found to be 0.89 at 55°C. Under similar drying condition at constant thickness (8 mm), drying time showed an inverse relationship with temperature. The activation energy (Ea) was calculated as 3.242 Kcal/g-mole. Eggplant slices having the highest thickness (8 mm) were blanched at 70°C, 75°C and 80°C for 1, 2 and 2.5 minutes, respectively using hot water bath to determine the effective blanching time and temperature. It was observed that the samples blanched at 75°C and 80°C for 2 minute were enough to inactivate the enzymes. Pretreated (blanched, sulphited and blanched plus sulphited) eggplant slices having constant thickness (8 mm) were dried at constant temperature of 55°C. The drying time was influenced by pretreatments. The highest drying rate was observed for eggplant slices with blanched plus sulphited (5% KMS solution) samples while eggplant slices with 5%KMS solution dipped for 10 minutes showed the lowest drying rate. In case of fresh slices, drying time was lower than blanched and sulphited samples but higher than blanched plus sulphited samples. Pretreatment was also found effective on the color changes (preservation or degradation). Blanching gave a bright color compared to fresh sample but less bright compared to sulphited samples. In case of SO2 retention, blanched plus sulphited sample showed higher retention than sulphited sample. Sulphited sample retains 44.8 ppm SO2/100g of sulphited sample, while the blanched plus sulphited sample retains 280 ppm SO2/100 g of blanched plus sulphited sample. J. Bangladesh Agril. SummaryThe reason of the so called ulcerated capillaritis alba or idiopathic atrophie blanche is vasculopathy caused by severe venous hypertension. Thrombosed and rarificated vessels worsen the oxygenation, increase permanent inflammation and impede the necessary compression therapy. The anti-inflammatory effects of heparin alleviate pain and being independent from the antithrombotic ones it needs much lower doses for treatment. This anti-inflammatory effect is now becoming more important in clinical phlebology. Case studies of more than 50 patients and one prospective randomized study of 87 patients clearly demonstrate the ameliorated healing of ulcerated atrophie blanche. In our office we could document this positive effect with 22 patients. We present the pathophysiology of low molecular heparins for ulcerated capillaritis alba and our own experiences with it.

The article reconstructs the illustrating history of “La Revue Blanche”, the leading French literary and artistic magazine of the fin de siècle epoch. Leaving out the analysis of literary content, the authors considers the petite revue through the prism of its most significant artistic achievements. In order to achieve this goal, a rather wide range of graphic artists who collaborated with “La Revue Blanche” at one time or another is outlined, and the conditional genre ranking of engravings published and distributed with the help of the journal is carried out. Based on the data obtained, a periodization of the short history of “La Revue Blanche” illustrating is proposed. The article attaches great importance to the stylistic and iconographic analysis of individual artworks. In the case of the ones by Vuillard, Roussel, and Bonnard, it is possible to put forward new semantic interpretations and emphasize the confessional nature of the prints created by the masters for the design of the journal’s frontispiece. In the article significant attention is given to the history of introducing the practice of publishing graphic literary portraits by Vallotton in “La Revue Blanche”, which at some point are forced to take on the utilitarian function of vignettes. Equally important is the review of the publication history of the independent illustrated supplement “NIB”, which, as is well known, has only had three issues. The authors see in “NIB”, at the same time, an artistic reincarnation of fumiste chatnoiresque satire, clearly close to Toulouse-Lautrec, Valloton and Bonnard, and a graphic revealing of the internal philosophical and aesthetic conflict that existed within the Nabis art group. In addition, the authors also describe the features of the Nathanson brothers’ publishing activity, emphasizing the direct dependence of the content of published products on the owners’ tastes.

In the context of the question of metaphor, Jacques Derrida plays a particularly important role in the history of thought. In his work La Mythologie Blanche with the important subtitle: La métaphore dans le texte philosophique, among other questions, he problematizes the history of metaphor problems, implications arising from historical and contemporary metaphor, as well as the possibilities of the relation of science to it. And, because the question of metaphor is given as one of the important sources of religious conflicts in this paper, the metaphor in the theological text is to be problematized, following in the footsteps of Derrida's thought achievements. In other words: in this paper, one has to read one question of metaphor in a philosophical text as a question of the possibility of metaphor in a theological text. The hypothesis of this paper to be proved is that religious conflicts arise from a multitude of phenomena that we can reduce to the lowest common denominator named as ignorance, and in this context as a source of subject ignorance -among many other phenomena -a metaphor is given in the theological text: there is no intention here to prove the existence of metaphor in the theological text but the possibility of the existence of metaphor in the theological text in the wake of Derrida's mental achievements on the basis of which Derrida's work La Mythologie Blanche is given as a contribution to the incoherence of religious conflicts.

Preparation of biscuit incorporating lemon peel powder can be a new approach in formulating fortified fast food. This investigation was made to evaluate quality of prepared biscuits with lemon peel powder. The effect of temperature on drying time and physiochemical properties of lemon peel powder and their effects on biscuits were also examined. Two drying temperatures (650C and 750C) were employed for both blanched and unblanched lemon peel. The formulated biscuit samples incorporating 1 % lemon peel powder were compared with control biscuits which were prepared with 100% wheat flour. It took longer time (18 hr) for drying of blanched sample at 65 0C whereas shorter time (8 hr) was required for that of blanched sample at 750C. There was a significant decrease in the physiochemical properties of lemon peel powder with the increase of temperature except protein and fibre content. In addition, moisture content of the unblanched sample was found to be lower than the blanched sample at the same temperature. Significantly higher ascorbic acid was obtained by the unblanched samples. Protein and fibre content for both unblanched and blanched sample at the same temperature were found to be higher. All the samples were significantly different at 5% level of significance for overall acceptability. Biscuits prepared with unblanched dried lemon peel powder (at 650C) sample secured the highest score in case of all the sensory parameters. Therefore, quality fortified biscuit can be prepared commercially by incorporating 1 % lemon peel powder in wheat flour for the fast food consumer.

Sea buckthorn is ranked among the most significant super foods worldwide. Its fruits and leaves are used as fresh or dried in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. As super food any pre-treatment should sustain this property and hence this research was focused on osmotic dehydration of sea buckthorn by stevia also a super food. Therefore, water loss, sugar gain, acidity, ascorbic acid and water diffusivity were evaluated during osmotic dehydration of sea buckthorn by two stevia solutions, 15ο and 30οBrix and following were air-dried at 50οC by comparing the effect of steam blanching per case. Steam blanched samples exhibited increased water loss at the end of the process, 55% at 30οBrix and 48% at 15οBrix, compared to untreated samples where losses were 43% (30οBrix) and 28% (15οBrix) respectively. Ascorbic acid was significantly reduced, exceeding 50% in steam blanched samples and 23% in untreated samples. Steam blanched samples dehydrated at 15oBrix exhibited 82% dry matter increase and only 39% the untreated samples. Similarly, samples dehydrated at 30oBrix exhibited 84% dry matter increase and 53% when no steam blanching was applied. Solid gain was seven times less compared to water loss which is attributed to high molecular weight of steviol glycoside. The osmotic dehydration and airdrying curves were described effectively by Peleg and Fick models, and Logarithmic and Fick models respectively, having in all cases R2 adj>99% and SEE<0.2. The water diffusivity of steam blanched samples was 3.2-5.57×10-11 m 2 /s for water loss and 1.27- 2.03×10-11 m 2 /s for solid gain at 30oBrix and 2.12-4.27×10-11 m 2 /s and 0.91-1.98×10-11 m 2 /s at 15oBrix. Finally, the water diffusivity of steam blanched samples during air-drying was 2.11-2.29×10-11 m 2 /s and 1.56-1.66×10-11 m 2 /s in the case of untreated samples.

In the critical mass case where the total mass of the initial data is{8\pi}, the unboundedness of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem was shown by Blanchet, Carrillo and Masmoudi [7] under some conditions on the initial data, on the other hand, conditions for boundedness were given by Blanchet, Carlen and Carrillo [6] and López-Gómez, Nagai and Yamada [23]. In this paper, we investigate further the boundedness of nonnegative solutions.

RÉSUMÉCette étude a exploré l’efficacité de l’entraînement aérobie (EA) pour atténuer la progression de l’hyperintensité de la matière blanche (HMB) et les différences liées au sexe pour cette intervention. Un essai contrôlé randomisé a été mené pour évaluer l’effet de l’EA sur la cognition de personnes ayant un déficit cognitif d’origine vasculaire. Les participants ont été répartis aléatoirement entre deux groupes : 6 mois d’EA ou soins standards (groupe contrôle). Dans un sous-groupe de participants, l’imagerie par résonance magnétique a été utilisée pour quantifier le volume affecté par la HMB. Un modèle d’analyse de la covariance a permis de mettre en évidence une interaction sexe x groupe significative (p = 0,03). En effet, les femmes du groupe EA ont démontré une plus grande progression de l’hyperintensité de la matière blanche que les femmes du groupe contrôle (p = 0,05) pendant la durée de cette étude (6 mois). Chez les hommes, aucune différence n’a été observée entre les deux groupes (p = 0,31). Dans le groupe EA, les hommes ont montré une progression significativement moindre de la HMB, comparativement aux femmes (p = 0,01) après 6 mois. Ainsi, les effets de l’EA sur la progression de la HMB pourraient varier selon le sexe, et l’EA pourrait freiner la progression de la HMB chez les hommes, mais non chez les femmes.

When the Liverpool Daily Post, its sister paper, the Liverpool Echo, and the Daily Mail published inflammatory material about a restricted patient at Park Lane Special Hospital (now Ashworth (North) Special Hospital) their editors were strongly warned by the House of Lords that they would be well advised to exercise greater care in future, that they did not overstep the mark and find themselves in contempt of court. The newspapers won their appeal because the law allowed them to report the fact that a restricted patient had applied to a Mental Health Review Tribunal for his discharge, the date and place of the hearing of the application and any order made discharging the patient, absolutely or conditionally. But the law does not give the papers carte blanche to comment on a case in order to mount a campaign of public protest against the patient's release.

Among the French philosophers who discuss the literature of writer Marquis de Sade, Maurice Blanchot presents a unique interpretation. For Blanchot, literature is the theme par excellence on which his entire oeuvre has been built. It is not, however, the case that Blanchot reads several literary forms and invents new concepts to map out a certain form of literature. His thinking about literature is indeed accompanied by an ideal and his interest goes out to a particular kind of writer, namely the writer who feels closely related to revolution. This implies that Blanchot is interested in Sade because his literature is both an illustration of a certain ideal, and is stuck in the revolutionary moment of radical negation.

Abstract Ordinarily in prose translation, rhythm is usually not a matter of great concern for the translator. Unlike poetry, with its comparatively rigid form, prose, by its very nature, permits a free form fluidity, giving the translator a certain kind of carte blanche “prosaic” license. However, in language-driven texts, as is the case in the novels of Yoruba creative writer D.O. Fagunwa, the translator has to be ever mindful of the author's purposeful inter-linking of the aesthetic value of sound to the cognitive meaning of the text.

Livedoid vasculopathy is a rare vascular disease which typically manifests as recurrent ulcerative lesions on the lower extremities. It is classified as a vasculopathy, not a true vasculitis, and defined as a vasooclusive syndrome, caused by non-inflammatory thrombosis of the upper and mid-dermal venulae. Main disorders associated with LV include thrombophilias, autoimmune diseases and neoplasia. A triad of clinical features is present in most patients and consist of livedo racemosa (less frequently livedo reticularis), ulcerations and atrophie blanche. Management generally relies on antiplatelet drugs, anticoagulants, vasodilators and fibrinolytic therapy. Some benefit has been observed with intravenous immunoglobulin, colchicine, hyperbaric oxygen, while glucocorticoids are efficient to a lesser extent. This case report highlights a refractory clinical form with no identifiable predisposing condition, which proved responsive only to intravenous immunoglobulin.

This kind of work can best be done by women, not only because they are generally better adapted to it, but because the sacrifice is not so clear nor so great in their case as it would generally be in that of a man. Only let the cost be counted and compared with the gain, and do not let us ask women to give up their chance of filling a more useful place in the world for the sake of employing them in trivial social duties from which they might be spared with little loss to anyone.With these remarks, Mrs. Sidgwick joined the extended debate over the rights and duties of spinster daughters that the Victorian women's movement pursued for decades. Cardoon (C. cardunculus var. altilis DC) is commonly cultivated in the Mediterranean area to produce stalks that are consumed once cooked. Before cooking, stalks are usually subjected to blanching, which means they are exposed to darkness for a few weeks. The present work analyzed the effect of field blanching carried out for 40 days in different ways (burying the stalks under soil or covering them with plastic sheet) on the total phenolic content (TPC), phenolic profile, cynaropicrin content (a bitter compound), and antioxidant activity (AA) of two cardoon cultivars. The nutraceutical quality of blanched cardoons was also investigated following boiling. The phenolic profile revealed a higher number of compounds in blanched stalks than in raw ones. The cynaropicrin content decreased in both cultivars after blanching, indicating a sensitivity to dark conditions and the effectiveness of blanching method in reducing its bitterness. The data presented contribute to improving the knowledge about the effect of blanching and boiling on the quality of cardoon stalks.

: The first translation of Freud published in Portugal appears to have been a version of the 1905 text Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie, which came out in November 1932 named Sexualidade.Published by the Ática Pressin a collection entitled Scientia Vitæ, the translator's name –Osório de Oliveira –was,surprisingly,displayed in a prominent position on the title page. A comparison between this translation, Freud's original and a French version by Blanche Reverchon, that had come out shortly before, shows that it was a case of indirect translation, which reproduced many of the characteristics of the intermediary version. Forexample, while Freud's original enables the reader to follow the thought processes behind his hypotheses and scientific conclusions, both of the translated texts are much less tentative. This paper explores the circumstances surrounding the production of this Portuguese translation at that moment, the translational options made, and the effect of both on the text's reception. Particular attention is given to the domain of lexis –creation of neologisms, terminological consistency and coherence –and modalization, and whether the terminological options caught on and were reproduced in subsequent translations and commentaries.

The October 2003 deportation of French terror suspect Willy Brigitte highlights the legal and political usages of recently conferred and controversial counter- terrorism detention and questioning laws. This article explores the executive con- tention upon a comparison with the French system, Australian detention and questioning powers require significant expansion. Executive usages of the Brigitte incident in response to terrorism display alarming trends steadily eroding rule of law principles and undermining the institutions and practices of Australian democracy. The article analyses ASIO detention and questioning powers and subsequent and possible expansions. It demonstrates that the constant review, reworking and revisiting of those powers is a more overt politicisation of counter-terrorism responses, employs executive mandated review at the expense of more measured, deliberative and democratic practice and leads to the attrition of rights as the legislation’s “balance” is continually contested. The indefinite nature of the terrorism threat and the restraint on such responses as political only, in the absence of a bill of rights, makes these developments of real concern. The article argues, through several illustrations, that claims for expanded detention and questioning powers have been inappropriately presented. The article concludes that there is neither a rational nor substantiated case for the claim to loosen constraints on already unprecedented counter-terrorism detention and questioning powers.

Drying is an essential process in the preservation of agricultural products. Various drying methods are employed to dry different agricultural products. Each method has its own advantages and limitations. Choosing the right drying system is thus important in the process of drying agricultural products. Care must be taken in choosing the drying system. Study comparing traditional drying and other drying methods for the reduction of the drying time and to a significant improvement of the product quality in term so color texture and taste. Drying reduces the possibilities of the contamination by insects and microorganisms so that product is prevented. An experimental study was performed to determine the drying characteristics of dates halves using hot air dryer, solar dryer and open sun drying methods. The date fruits (Phoenix dactylifera) are as a food of high energy value. It is very popular both nationally and internationally. Date fruits are perishable fruit crop grown in coastal region of kutchh of Gujarat state. The date fruits are harvested at ripening stage so the fresh fruits have not longer shelf life. The date halves were dried under hot air flow dryer at temperature level of 50, 60 and 70oC under pre-treatment of blanching and un-blanching. The rate of moisture of blanched sample should only 7.5 % reduction at 54hr drying period while un blanched sample should 13.9 % reduction at 102 hr. In case of date halves drying, the constant weight of sample was achieved at 56 h of drying period in solar cabinet dryer as compared to 320 h for open sun drying. The moisture content was reduced from 69.5 to 8.7 % (w.b.) under solar cabinet dryer for drying of 56 h, while the moisture content was reduce 69.5 to 12.3 % (w.b.) under open sun drying for drying period of 320 h. It was found that the highest moisture removal was 67% for the drying time of 54 h. under hot air flow dryer at 70 oC while minimum moisture removal was 63.6 % for drying time of 320 h. under open sun drying method. In hot air flow drying method, the drying rate for date halves was found to be 32.54, 46.37 and 62.03 g/h at temperature level of 50, 60 and 70 oC respectively for blanched samples, while it was 31.56, 45.53 and 60.93g/h at same temperature levels for unblanched samples.

Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) are currently reared at an industrial scale, mainly as a feed ingredient. The logistic chain not only involves the production of larvae, but also stabilisation, storage, and transport. The aim of this work was to study fermentation and vacuum packaging of larvae as potential preservation technologies. For fermentation, blanched larvae were pulverised into a paste, and a starter culture, NaCl, and glucose were added. The mixture was fermented for 7 days at 35 °C and then stored for 14 days at 4 °C and pH and microbial counts were monitored. Vacuum packaging was applied to living, blanched and frozen larvae. After packaging, they were stored for 6–10 days at several temperatures and gas composition, survival (living larvae) and microbial counts (killed larvae) were recorded. Fermentation allows storage of pulverised larvae, but points to consider are a rapid pH reduction and the presence of bacterial endospores. Vacuum packaging did not bring added value over cooling alone. This was the case for all types of larvae investigated. Vacuum packaging is not considered as a valuable preservation technology to pursue for storage and transport of black soldier fly larvae.

Writers, readers, critics all have strong personal preferences. Roland Barthes was a case in point. Many were the texts he chose to affirm. Others he rejected, while some were left to hover in the margins of his thinking. Still others barely feature at all, among which, conspicuous by their absence, are the novels and plays of Samuel Beckett. This article examines the political, theoretical and affective reasons for Barthes’s apparent indifference to a writer who, despite early hostility on the part of the literary establishment, came to be seen as the abiding embodiment of late modernity. It contrasts Barthes’s limited response to Beckett with that of another leading critic of the period, Maurice Blanchot.

Although relatively numerous accounts of late Tertiary canids have been reported from the western United States, records from Mexico are scarce. The three genera and species described and discussed in this paper come from Hemphillian and Blancan age deposits located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. All specimens were collected within a stratigraphic context. One taxon, Borophagus diversidens, was recovered from Blancan age deposits, while both Osteoborus cyonoides and a new species of Canis, C. ferox, came from deposits of Hemphillian age. This new species of Canis appears to be directly ancestral to the extinct C. lepophagus, long considered the forerunner of the modern coyote, C. latrans. The new Mexican canid also appears to be the earliest true Canis yet reported.

From today’s perspective, Alex North’s score for the 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire, which was considered remarkable even at the time, can claim legendary status. The titles of the 16-track score suggest that the music focuses on the characters, the setting, main motifs, crucial events and states of mind. The film soundtrack could thus be denoted as integral to and harmonized with the dramatic action. This is not the case in the 2008 staging at the Slovene National Theatre in Maribor, where the music composed and selected by Hrvoje Crnić Boxer seems to focus on the protagonist only. The performance revolves around Blanche and could be interpreted as a psychoanalytic study of the play through her subconscious. Analysing the musical layers of these two considerably different productions of Williams’ play opens new interpretative aspects of this complex theatre and film classic from the Deep South literary tradition.

There are many striking examples of phenotypic convergence in nature, in some cases associated with changes in the same genes. But even mutations in the same gene may have different biochemical properties and thus different evolutionary consequences. Here we dissect the molecular mechanism of convergent evolution in three lizard species with blanched coloration on the gypsum dunes of White Sands, New Mexico. These White Sands forms have rapidly evolved cryptic coloration in the last few thousand years, presumably to avoid predation. We use cell-based assays to demonstrate that independent mutations in the same gene underlie the convergent blanched phenotypes in two of the three species. Although the same gene contributes to light phenotypes in these White Sands populations, the specific molecular mechanisms leading to reduced melanin production are different. In one case, mutations affect receptor signaling and in the other, the ability of the receptor to integrate into the melanocyte membrane. These functional differences have important ramifications at the organismal level. Derived alleles in the two species show opposite dominance patterns, which in turn affect their visibility to selection and the spatial distribution of alleles across habitats. Our results demonstrate that even when the same gene is responsible for phenotypic convergence, differences in molecular mechanism can have dramatic consequences on trait expression and ultimately the adaptive trajectory.

The classes of languages which are Boolean combinations of languages of the form [Formula: see text] for a fixed k ≥ 0, form a natural hierarchy within piecewise testable languages and have been studied by Simon, Blanchet-Sadri, Volkov and others. The main issues were the existence of finite bases of identities for the corresponding pseudovarieties of monoids and monoids generating these pseudovarieties. Here we deal with similar questions concerning the finite unions and positive Boolean combinations of the languages of the form above. In the first case the corresponding pseudovarieties are given by a single identity, in the second case there are finite bases for k equals to 1 and 2 and there is no finite basis for k ≥ 4 (the case k = 3 remains open). All the pseudovarieties are generated by a single algebraic structure.

A WTO Panel held that unilateral US measures to protect sea turtles outside its territory, by regulating trade in shrimp and shrimp products, are incompatible with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The Panel's conclusions are based on the alleged overall negative impact of the widespread use of such measures on international trade. No due consideration would seem to have been given to the facts of the case, and the Panel's application of the Headnote Ad GATT Article XX would not seem to be generally satisfactory. The Panel does not address the issue of like products under Article HI of the GATT and the difficult relationship of this article with environmental measures based on production processes and methods (PPMs). The Panel expresses a firm belief in international environmental co-operation without giving carte blanche for such co-operation. It hints at a need for the better design of unilateral environmental measures in order to guarantee a more favourable GATT approach.

Many rights struggles have promoted education and learning as proof of citizenship and capacity, and disability rights movements are no exception. Blanche Van Leuven Browne, one early twentieth-century polio survivor, reimagined the possibilities of education for “crippled children” by approaching schooling as not only preparation for vocational work but as a sign of disabled children's social worthiness. This article explores the role of education in Browne's life and work, from her childhood in the 1880s to the Detroit hospital-school for physically disabled children she operated from 1907 to 1918. Browne's educational approach emphasized writing and citizenship to (re)define the identity of the “crippled child,” envisioning each as an intelligent future citizen. This approach contrasted with predominant contemporary medical, philanthropic, and educational approaches, which emphasized medical care and vocational training for children with orthopedic disabilities. It also distanced physically disabled children from intellectually disabled children, who were key cultural targets of eugenic fears.

Las anomalías pigmentarias son causadas por deficiencia o exceso de melanina, lo que resulta en alteraciones cromáticas de la piel y el pelaje o las plumas. La anomalía que consiste en manchas blancas se ha definido en murciélagos como leucismo o piebaldismo. Presentamos el primer registro de piebaldismo en Eumops auripendulus en Costa Rica. Mientras monitoreamos murciélagos en áreas urbanas, medimos el antebrazo de todos los individuos y notamos (entre otros rasgos) el color del pelaje y la longitud de las orejas. Buscamos la presencia de glándulas y evaluamos el grado de osificación de las placas epifisarias en las articulaciones falángicas. El 13 de septiembre de 2021 encontramos un macho muerto de E. auripendulus en San Ramón, Costa Rica. Su antebrazo midió 57.5 mm, que está dentro del rango de 57 – 63 mm registrado para esta especie. El murciélago era un individuo juvenil con una mancha blanca en la región abdominal media. Casos similares de coloración aberrante se han definido como piebaldismo. El registro de piebaldismo en E. auripendulus es el segundo para Molossidae en Costa Rica en un total de 6 casos de desórdenes cromáticos. Estos casos de coloración aberrante podrían estar relacionados con circunstancias potencialmente perjudiciales; por ejemplo, la presencia de manchas blancas puede estar asociada a la sordera, lo que en el caso de los murciélagos les impediría utilizar la ecolocalización. El conocimiento de casos de anomalías cromáticas en murciélagos ayudará a comprender las implicaciones ecológicas y fisiológicas de esta condición.

The macronutrient composition of teff-based complementary foods (ComFs) prepared through extrusion cooking and a combination of household-level strategies were evaluated. In extrusion, teff, soybean and orange-fleshed sweet potato were separately processed into their respective flours and composited in a percentage ratio of 70:20:10, respectively. It was then extruded into a complementary food (ComF1). In the case of household-level methods, portions of teff grains separately germinated for 24 and 48 h were dried and ground to fine flours. Similarly, small portions of soybean grains were separately blanched and roasted; then each were ground to fine flour. Four ComFs (ComF2, ComF3, ComF4, ComF5) were developed by blending flours of ungerminated teff, germinated teff, blanched or roasted soybean and sweet potato using the 70:20:10 ratio. The extrusion cooked ComF had significantly (p < 0.05) high protein (17.92 g/100 g) while the household-level ComFs had lower protein contents. Energy content of the ComFs ranged from 391.63 to 400.60 kcal/100 g. All ComFs met the requirements of protein and energy for 6 to 8 month-old infants. There was no significant difference in the dietary fiber contents of the developed complementary foods despite increased values of insoluble dietary fiber due to germination of teff and blanching or roasting of soybean. The study revealed the potential of developing complementary foods from teff-soybean-sweet potato blends with improved protein and energy contents.

If misreading is the index of carelessness in the face of precisely such a reversive force, then the felicity of our conveyance through footsteps destined to remain ahead of us necessitates a commitment to a care-full reading that (following Maurice Blanchot) will take the risk of imagining the hand writing and the death (i.e. the promise, chance, fear of impossibility) that bears this hand along. Paradoxically, for Blanchot this difficult reading is marked by an ease that we associate with happiness and innocence, for it opens itself joyfully as well as trustingly to the death borne by writing and "holds [it] in its turn" though (as Blanchot emphasizes) only in order to reverse it (precisely "through its ease"). It is this happy innocence, this joyful beginning as if for the first time (without guilt or knowledge, without fear of harm, without praejudicium) that determines an understanding of politics in the second part of the essay which investigates the stakes of each theorist's pas au-delà: that is, their step beyond in the direction of a more archaic motility.

Анотація:

This study assessed post-harvest activities and post-harvest losses of green chili farming in Kabjisa, Punakha, Bhutan. Data came from interviewing 75 chili-growers selected via proportionate random sampling. Most farmers were found selling fresh chili (green chili). Few farmers produced blanched, dried, and powdered chilies for self-consumption. Most grown chili varieties were Wookup ema, Indian chili, and Yangtsep ema. Farmers mostly harvested chilies manually during the daytime in a bucket. The majority of the farmers have sorted and graded chilies based on disease infection, damaged parts, and size. Chilies are usually packed and stored for a night before the sale. Most chili losses occurred during harvesting, followed by marketing and sorting. The price of fresh chilies had to discount significantly during the peak season as farmers could not process chilies into other products. Hence, supporting farmers with dryer, cold storage, chili value addition infrastructure, and contract farming would minimize chili losses.

To what extent are state officials held accountable for their actions? This essay will examine a specific aspect of this question, namely whether there is an exception to the general rule that the Head of State, Head of Government and Foreign Minister are immune from prosecution in another country’s national courts for serious international crimes. It will begin with a brief review of the relevant treaty provisions relating to immunity of state officials. Second, it will examine some pre-Arrest Warrant case law specifically on the issue of potential exceptions to the immunity rule for state officials. Third, it will review the Arrest Warrant Case, an ICJ decision that halted this trend and discuss some of the issues left unresolved by the decision. Fourth, it will review the ICJ’s discussion of immunity post-Arrest Warrant in Djibouti v. France. Finally, it will explore the concept of jus cogens and whether this could help reconcile the competing interests (state sovereignty and accountability for serious international crimes) at play in this issue. This essay will conclude that while the jus cogens nature of serious international crimes does not equate to an automatic carte blanche for removing immunity, it does strongly support the developing norm of limited exceptions to the general rule of immunity.
